OZARKS AREA COMMUNITY ACTION CORPORATION (OACAC), SPONSOR OF THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM (FGP), IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WORKING TO ALLEVIATE THE CAUSES AND CONDITIONS OF POVERTY ACROSS SOUTHWEST MISSOURI. THE MISSION OF ENRICHING THE LIVES OF FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES, OFFERING ASSISTANCE AND EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGE IS PUT INTO ACTION THROUGH OACAC PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS, INCLUDING THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM. OACAC IS REQUESTING $287,753 TO SUPPORT 58 VOLUNTEER SERVICE YEARS (VSY), WHICH WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $94,801 IN NON-FEDERAL RESOURCES. WITH THE FOCUS OF EDUCATION, PROGRAM OBJECTIVES INCLUDE SCHOOL READINESS AND K-12 SUCCESS. FOSTER GRANDPARENTS IN 14 COUNTIES ACROSS SOUTHWEST MISSOURI WILL ASSIST YOUTH WITH TUTORING, MENTORING, CLASSROOM TEACHING AND SUPPORT, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, AND PROBLEM SOLVING. STUDIES FROM THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION SHOW CHRONIC STRESS, DEFINED AS A "LONG TERM FORM OF STRESS, DERIVED FROM UNENDING FEELINGS OF DESPAIR/HOPELESSNESS, AS A RESULT OF FACTORS SUCH AS POVERTY, FAMILY DYSFUNCTION, FEELINGS OF HELPLESSNESS, AND/OR TRAUMATIC EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES," COMPROMISES AN INDIVIDUAL IN MULTIPLE WAYS. CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES FACE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF CHRONIC STRESS, WHICH CAN CAUSE POOR HEALTH, IMPAIRED LEARNING, AND DISRUPTED COGNITIVE, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. THE OBJECTIVES ADDRESSED BY THE OACAC FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM ENSURE A HIGHER QUALITY OF LIFE. UPON COMPLETION OF THE VSY, YOUTH WILL HAVE GAINS IN SCHOOL READINESS, AS WELL AS IMPROVED ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS. ADDITIONALLY, FOSTER GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS WILL HAVE SERVED AS ROLE MODELS AND LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES; HAVING HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE THEIR UNIQUE SKILL SETS AND COMPASSION WITH OTHERS.
