COLLEGE STREET, MARSHALL, MO 65340 PHONE: (660)831-4043 EMAIL: SCHULTET@MOVAL.EDU PROJECT PERIOD: JULY 1, 2022 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2024 THIS APPLICATION REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMIC FACILITY AT MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE IN ORDER TO MEET THE CURRENT AND GROWING DEMAND FOR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS LOCALLY, STATE-WIDE AND NATIONALLY. THE NEW FACILITY WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING OUTGROWN SCHOOL OF NURSING CURRENTLY HOUSED IN THE BASEMENT OF A LOCAL HOSPITAL, MORE THAN DOUBLING THE CAPACITY OF THE MVC SCHOOL OF NURSING PROGRAM THE PROJECTED COST OF THE NEW FACILITY IS $5,291,750. MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE IS REQUESTING A CONSTRUCTION GRANT FROM HRSA OF $2,000,000. THE REMAINING $3,291,750 IS BEING FUNDED BY MVC FROM DONATIONS OF ALUMNI, FRIENDS OF THE COLLEGE, NON-PROFIT FOUNDATIONS, AND THE CITY OF MARSHALL. THE NEW FACILITY WILL BE COMPLETED WITHIN 24 MONTHS OF THE EXPECTED START DATE OF JUNE 1, 2022. MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE WILL BUILD THE NEW 16,300 SQUARE-FOOT SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES BUILDING TO HOUSE THE NURSING PROGRAM, AND ULTIMATELY OTHER HEALTH CARE PROFESSION PROGRAMS, TRAINING AND GRADUATING CRITICALLY NEEDED NURSES TO MEET SIGNIFICANT STATE AND RURAL WORKFORCE SHORTAGES. THE NEW FACILITY WILL HOUSE STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY, SIMULATION, AND COMPUTER LABS, AND WILL PROVIDE SPACE FOR OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONS AS THE INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO EVOLVE. MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE CURRENTLY HOSTS A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING WITH TWO TRACKS: LPN TO BSN (ONLINE & FACE-TO-FACE) FOR CURRENTLY LICENSED LPNS AND A TRADITIONAL BSN. THE COLLEGE ALSO HAS A NEW MSN (MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING- FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER) IN PLACE AND LOOKS TO ADD PROGRAMS AS THE NEED ARISES. THE PANDEMIC HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF MISSOURI’S HEALTH CARE WORKERS, PARTICULARLY NURSES. JOBS FOR REGISTERED NURSES HAVE GROWN BY 19% BETWEEN 2012 AND 2022, COMPARED TO THE 11% GROWTH AVERAGE FOR ALL OCCUPATIONS, ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS. IN MISSOURI, THE NURSING OCCUPATIONS OF A REGISTERED NURSE, CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT, LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE, AND NURSE PRACTITIONER HOLD EMPLOYEE VACANCY RATES OF OVER 7%, MARKING A HIGHLY INCREASED DEMAND FOR NURSING PROFESSIONALS. NURSING SHORTAGES ARE EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED WITHIN RURAL COUNTIES. COMPOUNDING THE WORKFORCE SHORTAGE, MORE THAN ONE-THIRD OF MISSOURI’S RNS ARE AGE 55 OR OLDER, INCREASING TO NEARLY HALF IN SOME RURAL COUNTIES, WITH RETIREMENT IMMINENT. GRADUATES OF THE MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE SCHOOL OF NURSING ARE PREPARED TO SERVE IN A VARIETY OF CLINICAL SETTINGS INCLUDING LOCAL COMMUNITY HOSPITALS, TERTIARY CARE CENTERS, COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS, CLINICS, AND OTHER AGENCIES. THE BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S LEVEL NURSING EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE WELL-RESPECTED; 90% OF MVC NURSING STUDENTS ARE OFFERED A JOB PRIOR TO GRADUATION. THE MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE SCHOOL OF NURSING FOLLOWS ALL STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES OF THE MISSOURI STATE BOARD OF NURSING AND THE COMMISSION ON COLLEGIATE NURSING EDUCATION. FOR EVERY NURSE MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE EDUCATES AND GRADUATES, THOUSANDS OF LIVES WILL BE POSITIVELY IMPACTED. IN A STATE FACING NURSING SHORTAGES AND AS A COLLEGE SERVING RURAL COUNTIES, THE BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY ARE IMMEASURABLE. AMONG ALL MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE NURSING GRADUATES, 79% REMAIN IN MISSOURI TO LIVE, WORK, AND RAISE A FAMILY. THE NEW FACILITY REPRESENTS NOT ONLY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FUTURE GROWTH IN THE LOCAL AND STATE ECONOMY, BUT THE NEW SITE ALSO WIDENS THE PATH TO WELL-PAYING, PROFESSIONAL CAREERS.
