CAREER: THE INTERACTION OF DEFICITS IN CELLULAR REGULATION AND DIVERGENT PARENTAL ENVIRONMENTS TO POSTZYGOTIC ISOLATION IN HYBRIDIZING MILKWEEDS (ASCLEPIAS) -THIS PROJECT WILL STUDY HOW CELLULAR REGULATION AFFECTS THE REPRODUCTIVE BARRIERS BETWEEN TWO MILKWEED SPECIES IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS. UNDERSTANDING THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT SHEDS LIGHT ON THE WAYS IN WHICH SPECIES ADAPT TO THEIR ENVIRONMENTS AND HOW THEY INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER. THE PROJECT WILL USE FIELD EXPERIMENTS, GENOMICS, AND METABOLOMICS ANALYSES TO EXPLORE THE EFFECTS OF HYBRIDIZATION AND GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERTURBATION ON GENE NETWORKS AND CELLULAR METABOLISM. THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CELLULAR MECHANISMS, GENETIC INCOMPATIBILITIES, AND THE WAYS IN WHICH SPECIES INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS. THIS KNOWLEDGE WILL BE VALUABLE IN PREDICTING HOW CLIMATE CHANGE AND HUMAN ACTIVITIES MIGHT AFFECT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIFFERENT SPECIES. THE BROADER IMPACTS INCLUDE ENGAGING K12 STUDENTS IN SOUTH DAKOTA IN RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AND PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS. FINALLY, THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN UNDERGRADUATE BIOINFORMATICS CURRICULUM THAT FOCUSES ON QUANTITATIVE REASONING AND PROGRAMMING SKILLS. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE HOW INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC REPRODUCTIVE BARRIERS CONTRIBUTE TO SPECIES ISOLATION BY EXAMINING THE CELLULAR REGULATORY DYSFUNCTION IN HYBRIDS OF TWO MILKWEEDS, ASCLEPIAS SYRIACA AND A. SPECIOSA. THE STUDY WILL FOCUS ON IDENTIFYING THE CELLULAR REGULATORY NETWORKS AND STRESS-RESPONSE METABOLISM OF EACH SPECIES IN PARENTAL ENVIRONMENTS AND CHARACTERIZING THE DIVERSITY OF HYBRID CELLULAR EXPRESSION AND ITS IMPACT ON FITNESS. THE RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH RNA-SEQUENCING AND QUANTIFICATION OF STRESS METABOLITES IN ROOT AND LEAF TISSUE. THE BROADER IMPACTS ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE RESEARCH WITH EXPERIMENTS IN COMMON GARDENS AT K12 SCHOOLS ACROSS SOUTH DAKOTA TO QUANTIFY THE RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRE- AND POSTZYGOTIC BARRIERS TO REPRODUCTIVE ISOLATION. FURTHER INTEGRATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS WILL INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNDERGRADUATE BIOINFORMATICS CURRICULUM THAT FOCUSES ON QUANTITATIVE REASONING, MODELING, AND SIMULATION, AND APPLYING THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE VIA PROGRAMMING IN R. THIS RESEARCH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO UNDERSTANDING GENE INTERACTIONS AND THE TYPES OF INCOMPATIBILITIES THAT ARISE DURING SPECIES ISOLATION, WHICH WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT AS CLIMATE CHANGE AND HUMAN DISTURBANCES SHIFT SPECIES RANGES AND BRING PREVIOUSLY ISOLATED SPECIES INTO CONTACT. THIS PROJECT IS JOINTLY FUNDED BY THE INTEGRATIVE ECOLOGICAL PHYSIOLOGY PROGRAM (IEP) IN INTEGRATIVE ORGANISMAL SYSTEMS, THE ESTABLISHED PROGRAM TO STIMULATE COMPETITIVE RESEARCH (EPSCOR), AND THE EVOLUTIONARY PROCESSES (EP) PROGRAM IN THE DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY. WHEN MOLECULES, WHICH ARE COMPOSED OF MULTIPLE ATOMS, ABSORB LIGHT IN A SIMILAR MANNER, THE ABSORBED ENERGY CAN QUICKLY BE TRANSFERRED AWAY FROM THE ELECTRONS AND CAUSE THE ATOMS WITHIN THE MOLECULE TO MOVE. THE MOLECULES CAN VIBRATE BY STRETCHING OR BENDING, OR THE ATOMS IN THE MOLECULE CAN ROTATE ABOUT EACH OTHER. THIS SORT OF BEHAVIOR IS A KEY STEP IN PROCESSES SUCH AS VISION OR PHOTOSYNTHESIS, AND UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS ENERGY TRANSFER IS ACCOMPLISHED CAN HELP DESIGN MORE EFFICIENT COLLECTION OF LIGHT OR TO CONSTRUCT LIGHT-ACTIVATED MOLECULAR SWITCHES. AT AN EXTREME LEVEL, INTENSE, ULTRASHORT LASER PULSES CAN MANIPULATE TRANSIENT MOLECULAR STRUCTURE DIRECTLY. STATED ANOTHER WAY, THE PRECISE APPLICATION OF A LASER PULSE CAN BE THOUGHT OF AS A LIGHT-BASED REAGENT THAT ALTERS A CHEMICAL PROCESS IN A DESIRED MANNER. FOR THESE REASONS, THIS BASIC RESEARCH EXPLORES HOW THE EXCITATION OF ELECTRONS IN MOLECULES BY LIGHT LEADS TO CHANGES IN TRANSIENT MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND SEEKS WAYS OF CONTROLLING THOSE PROCESSES. THESE STUDIES ARE DONE WITH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, WHICH PROVIDES MOTIVATION FOR FURTHER SCIENTIFIC EDUCATION AND THEREFORE HELPS DEVELOP A HIGHLY SKILLED WORKFORCE. THIS RESEARCH USES MOMENTUM IMAGING SCHEMES TO MEASURE THE STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF MOLECULES FOLLOWING THE APPLICATION OF INTENSE, ULTRAFAST LASER PULSES. PHOTOELECTRON CIRCULAR DICHROISM IS A SENSITIVE PROBE OF CHIRAL STRUCTURE IN MOLECULES AND ONE PART OF THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO USE THESE SIGNALS TO PROBE LASER-INDUCED TRANSITIONS FROM ACHIRAL TO CHIRAL STRUCTURES. COINCIDENCE ION MOMENTUM IMAGING CAN IDENTIFY SPECIFIC DYNAMIC PROCESSES IN MOLECULES, AND MULTI-PARTICLE CUMULANT ANALYSIS CAN INCREASE THE DATA ACQUISITION RATE BY ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE OVER TRADITIONAL COINCIDENCE ANALYSIS. DEVELOPING THIS DETECTION APPROACH IS THE SECOND MAIN GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: THE DARKSIDE DARK-MATTER SEARCH USING LIQUID ARGON -A LARGE BODY OF ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS, INCLUDING GALACTIC ROTATION CURVES, STRONG GRAVITATIONAL LENSING, AND THE ANISOTROPY OF THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND, INDICATES THAT KNOWN MATTER ONLY ACCOUNTS FOR A SMALL FRACTION OF THE OBSERVED MASS-ENERGY OF THE UNIVERSE. A STRONG CANDIDATE FOR THE REMAINING MASS IS WEAKLY INTERACTING DARK MATTER PARTICLES WITH PROPERTIES DIFFERENT FROM ORDINARY MATTER. DIRECT (NON-GRAVITATIONAL) DETECTION OF DARK MATTER WOULD BE A TRANSFORMATIONAL DISCOVERY AND WOULD REPRESENT A WATERSHED MOMENT IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, OPENING THE GATES TO THE INVESTIGATION OF THE DARK UNIVERSE. THE GOAL OF THIS AWARD IS THE TESTING, ON-SITE INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING, AND TRANSITIONING TO OPERATIONS OF DARKSIDE-20K (DS-20K), AN EXPERIMENT CAPABLE OF PUSHING THE SENSITIVITY OF DIRECT DARK MATTER SEARCHES BEYOND THAT OF ANY CURRENT OR PRESENTLY FUNDED EXPERIMENT. BROADER SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACTS FROM THE PROJECT INCLUDE, AMONG OTHERS: THE PRODUCTION OF LOW-RADIOACTIVITY UNDERGROUND ARGON (UAR) FOR DS-20K AND FOR NUCLEAR TEST BAN VERIFICATION AND RADIOMETRIC DATING; THE CONTINUED STUDY OF THE UNDERGROUND GAS SOURCE DISCOVERED DURING THE UAR EXPLORATION, A SOURCE WHICH SUPPLIES 15 % OF THE CURRENT U.S. HELIUM CONSUMPTION; AND THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF 3D?, A LAR-BASED TOF-PET SYSTEM THAT CAN ENHANCE CANCER SCREENING WHILE LOWERING RADIATION DOSE. A LEADING DARK MATTER CANDIDATE IS A WEAKLY INTERACTING MASSIVE PARTICLE, OR WIMP, A THERMAL RELIC OF THE BIG BANG THAT HAS A SUB-ELECTROWEAK-SCALE SELF-ANNIHILATION CROSS SECTION AND A MASS IN THE GEV/C2 TO TEV/C2 RANGE. THE MOTION OF GALACTIC HALO WIMPS RELATIVE TO A DETECTOR ON EARTH COULD RESULT IN WIMP-NUCLEUS ELASTIC COLLISIONS DETECTABLE BY A LOW-BACKGROUND, LOW-ENERGY-THRESHOLD DETECTOR CAPABLE OF UNAMBIGUOUSLY IDENTIFYING A SMALL NUMBER OF NUCLEAR RECOILS FROM WIMP COLLISIONS OVER THE COURSE OF A VERY LARGE EXPOSURE. THANKS TO ITS EXCELLENT IONIZATION RESPONSE AND UNIQUE SCINTILLATION LIGHT EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS, LIQUID ARGON CAN PROVIDE OUTSTANDING SENSITIVITY FOR WIMP-NUCLEAR COLLISIONS AND STRONG BACKGROUND SUPPRESSION. THE U.S. NSF GROUPS INVOLVED IN THIS PROGRAM HAVE LED THE CONCEPTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DARKSIDE-20K LIQUID ARGON DARK MATTER SEARCH. WITH SUPPORT FROM A SEPARATE MID-SCALE AWARD, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND DELIVERY OF THE MOST CRITICAL DS-20K COMPONENTS: THE LIQUID ARGON TIME PROJECTION CHAMBER (LAR TPC) THAT SERVES AS THE HEART OF THE DS-20K DARK MATTER DETECTOR ALONG WITH ITS CRITICAL ANCILLARY COMPONENTS, INCLUDING THE HIGH-VOLTAGE DELIVERY SYSTEM, AND THE ASSOCIATED CRYOGENIC, PURIFICATION, AND CALIBRATION SYSTEMS. RUI: STUDYING THE STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE AT AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY -THIS AWARD CONTINUES THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM AT AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY IN SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA DEVOTED TO THE STUDY OF THE STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE, WHICH IS THE FORCE RESPONSIBLE FOR BINDING PROTONS AND NEUTRONS IN THE NUCLEUS OF AN ATOM AND FOR ENERGY GENERATION IN THE SUN. THE VERY EARLY UNIVERSE WAS SO HOT THAT PROTONS AND NEUTRONS DID NOT EXIST. INSTEAD, A DENSE SOUP OF QUARKS AND GLUONS, THE FUNDAMENTAL PARTICLES THAT MAKE UP THE PROTON AND NEUTRON AND INTERACT BY THE STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE, EXISTED. THIS STATE OF MATTER HAS BEEN RECREATED IN THE COLLISIONS OF HEAVY NUCLEI, LIKE GOLD, AT THE RELATIVISTIC HEAVY ION COLLIDER (RHIC) AT BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY. AS A MEMBER OF THE SPHENIX COLLABORATION, THE AUGUSTANA NUCLEAR PHYSICS GROUP PROPOSES TO ANALYZE HOW HIGH ENERGY PARTICLES EMERGING FROM THE QUARK-GLUON PLASMA CHANGE THEIR ENERGY AND DIRECTION. SUCH MEASUREMENT YIELDS INFORMATION ABOUT THE PLASMA'S PROPERTIES AS WELL AS DETAILS ON THE FUNDAMENTAL STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE INTERACTION. THE GROUP IS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE EPIC COLLABORATION THAT IS DESIGNING THE DETECTOR FOR THE EVENTUAL ELECTRON-ION COLLIDER (EIC) TO BE BUILT AT BROOKHAVEN. THE GROUP WILL BE CONTRIBUTING MANPOWER TO STUDYING POTENTIAL ELECTROMAGNETIC CALORIMETER TECHNOLOGIES TO BE USED. THE PROPOSED WORK IS UNIQUE IN SOUTH DAKOTA AND THE REGION AND PROVIDE PHYSICS AND PRE-ENGINEERING STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES TO BE TECHNICALLY TRAINED. THEY WILL WORK WITH COLLABORATORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND PRESENT AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES. THE PROJECT WILL FUND RESEARCH FOR UNDERGRADUATES STUDYING BOTH PHYSICS AND PRE-ENGINEERING AND PROVIDE BROAD EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS. STUDENTS WILL GAIN PRACTICAL SKILLS SUCH AS COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, ANALYSIS OF LARGE DATA SETS, ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING APPLICATION, AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN. ALL THESE SKILLS ARE TRANSFERABLE TO OTHER VOCATIONS OF INTEREST TO THE STUDENT, THE STATE, AND THE NATION. STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY COLLABORATION MEETINGS, PRESENT AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES, AND VISIT COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS. SUCH OPPORTUNITIES WILL BUILD THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS, GROW THEIR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK, PUT THEM IN CONTACT WITH POTENTIAL GRADUATE SCHOOLS, AND PREPARE THEM FOR 21ST-CENTURY TECHNICAL JOBS. THIS AWARD SUPPORTS THE CONTINUATION OF THE ONLY LABORATORY IN THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA DEDICATED TO STUDYING THE STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE. THE PI IS A MEMBER OF THE SPHENIX COLLABORATION AT THE RELATIVISTIC HEAVY ION COLLIDER (RHIC) AND EPIC COLLABORATION AT THE ELECTRON ION COLLIDER (EIC), BOTH AT BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY. BROADLY THE PI AND HIS STUDENTS HAVE FOCUSED ON USING HIGH MOMENTUM TRANSFER (Q2) PROCESSES, SPECIFICALLY JETS, TO UNDERSTAND LOW-Q2 PROCESSES. USING SPHENIX AU+AU AND P+P DATA, HADRON-JET AZIMUTHAL CORRELATIONS WILL BE MEASURED. DEPENDING ON HOW THE JETS ARE BINNED, THESE CORRELATIONS CAN BE SENSITIVE TO DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PARTON ENERGY LOSS IN A QUARK-GLUON PLASMA (QGP). THESE MEASUREMENTS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HIGH LUMINOSITY OF RHIC AND HIGH DAQ RATE OF SPHENIX TO HAVE A LARGE SAMPLE OF JETS TO STUDY THE TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF THE QGP AT RHIC. THE PI AND STUDENTS PLAN TO INCREASE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN EPIC. THE GROUP WILL WORK ALONGSIDE COLLABORATORS DOING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK FOR HOMOGENEOUS ELECTROMAGNETIC CALORIMETERS FOR THE CENTRAL RAPIDITY BARREL OR THE ELECTRON-GOING BACKWARD RAPIDITY ARM. THE GROUP PLANS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE JEFFERSON LAB TEST BEAM CAMPAIGN. DEEP INELASTIC E+A COLLISIONS AT THE EIC CAN PROBE A REGION WHICH MAY BE WHERE GLUON SATURATION DOMINATES GLUON KINEMATICS. THE GROUP WILL CONTINUE WORKING ON WAYS TO INCREASE THE SENSITIVITY OF TWO-PARTICLE AZIMUTHAL CORRELATIONS TO THE PHOTON-GLUON FUSION PROCESS. BEYOND THE PHYSICS DELIVERABLES, THIS PROJECT HAS ADDITIONAL BROADER IMPACTS. BEING THE SINGLE STRONG-FORCE PHYSICS LABORATORY IN THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA, STUDENTS FROM THE REGION HAVE UNIQUE ACCESS TO THIS KIND OF PHYSICS. STUDENTS THAT HAVE WORKED IN THE GROUP HAVE GAINED VALUABLE EXPERIENCE IN MATHEMATICS, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. THERE ARE FORMER STUDENTS WHO ARE EITHER COMPLETING THEIR ENGINEERING DEGREES OR IN THE WORK FORCE IN A TECHNICAL JOB IN AND AROUND SOUTH DAKOTA. THE PROPOSED ANALYSIS AND DETECTOR TESTING WORK WILL PROVIDE CURRENT STUDENTS WITH THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES TO BE READY FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE TECHNICAL JOBS. THIS PROJECT IS JOINTLY FUNDED BY NUCLEAR PHYSICS PROGRAM AND THE ESTABLISHED PROGRAM TO STIMULATE COMPETITIVE RESEARCH (EPSCOR). THE NEED FOR PATHWAYS FOR YOUNG LEARNERS TO DEVELOP INTEREST AND CONFIDENCE IN STEM AND TO BECOME MOTIVATED TO WORK IN STEM FIELDS IS RECOGNIZED BY SD?S SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (S&T) PLAN, WHICH IDENTIFIES THE IMPORTANCE OF IDEAS, TALENT, AND COMPANIES. THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT INCORPORATES THREE PUBLIC AND ONE PRIVATE PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS, THREE TRIBAL COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES (TCUS), AND THREE PHD-GRANTING INSTITUTIONS. ADDITIONAL PARTNERS INCLUDE A SPECIALTY SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, SD BOARD OF REGENTS, SD DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND A US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY-FUNDED RESEARCH FACILITY. AN INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATION CENTER ACROSS THE JURISDICTION FOCUSES ON TALENT AND ON THE S&T PLAN'S TWO RELATED STRATEGIES TO STRENGTHEN THE SD RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM. THESE TWO STRATEGIES ARE (I) INCREASING THE DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND EQUITY OF THE SD STEM WORKFORCE; AND (II) CULTIVATING A WORKFORCE PIPELINE BY PROMOTING STEM CAREERS WITH SD K-12 STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL BUILD A STRONG NETWORK OF EDUCATORS AND RESEARCHERS AND STRENGTHEN THE STEM EDUCATION LANDSCAPE ACROSS SOUTH DAKOTA, INCLUDING WITHIN THE MOST RURAL AND REMOTE REGIONS AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES. K-12 STUDENTS, THEIR TEACHERS, TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS, FAMILIES, POST-SECONDARY FACULTY, AND STEM RESEARCHERS WILL ALL BENEFIT. THE CITIZENRY WILL BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT STEM RESEARCH UNDERWAY WITHIN SD, AND A BROADER ARRAY OF STUDENTS WILL SEE THAT THEY ARE WELCOME TO A SEAT AT THE TABLE AND ARE SUPPORTED TO SUCCEED IN STEM. INSPIRING MORE UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN STEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO STRENGTHEN THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE IN THE STATE AND NATIONWIDE. THIS PROJECT IS LED BY BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY, A PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION (PUI) WITHIN THE SD BOARD OF REGENTS SYSTEM. THE PROJECT?S 35-MEMBER LEADERSHIP TEAM REPRESENTS A COLLABORATION ACROSS A BREADTH OF SD ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS (I.E., OGLALA LAKOTA COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA MAIN CAMPUS, SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY, DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY ASSOCIATION, NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY, SINTE GLESKA UNIVERSITY, SISSETON WAHPETON COLLEGE, SANFORD UNDERGROUND RESEARCH FACILITY/SD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AUTHORITY, SOUTH DAKOTA DISCOVERY CENTER). IN SERVICE TO THE SD S&T PLAN, THIS PROJECT INCLUDES AN ADMINISTRATIVE CORE FOCUSED SPECIFICALLY ON STEM EDUCATION, BOTH IN-SCHOOL AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL, AND ON THREE ADDITIONAL CORES IN STEM EDUCATION (K-16), BROADENING PARTICIPATION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH. THROUGH THESE CORES, THE PROJECT WILL BUILD A JURISDICTION-WIDE NETWORK WITH 6 PROJECT GOALS. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO: (I) ENHANCE THE ABILITY OF STEM RESEARCHERS TO ENGAGE EFFECTIVELY WITH K-12 EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS, THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND OTHER AUDIENCES OUTSIDE THEIR DISCIPLINES; (II) IDENTIFY AND NURTURE STEM TEACHER LEADERS, EQUIPPING THEM TO STRENGTHEN STEM EDUCATION WITHIN THEIR SCHOOL BUILDINGS AND DISTRICTS AND TO ADVANCE STEM EDUCATION ACROSS THE STATE; (III) ENHANCE THE ABILITY OF ALL K-12 TEACHERS TO DELIVER HIGH-QUALITY STEM INSTRUCTION, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO SERVE RURAL AND NATIVE AMERICAN POPULATIONS; (IV) STRENGTHEN THE LEVEL OF INTEREST, SENSE OF BELONGING, AND ACADEMIC PREPARATION IN STEM OF SD'S FULL ARRAY OF STUDENTS ? FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND INTO POST-SECONDARY; (V) GENERATE AND SHARE RESEARCH FINDINGS RELEVANT BEYOND SD ABOUT STEM TEACHER LEADERSHIP, BUILDING STUDENT IDENTITY IN STEM, AND FACTORS IMPORTANT IN SUPPORTING NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS IN STEM; AND (VI) PROVIDE STEM EDUCATION GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TO THE SD JURISDICTIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE IN STRENGTHENING COLLABORATION AMONG RESEARCHERS, EDUCATORS, AND STEM EDUCATION PROGRAMS ACROSS SD, AND TO CATALYZE YET-TO-BE ENVISIONED EFFORTS RELATED TO STEM EDUCATION.
