THIS PROJECT WILL RESTORE THE APPROXIMATE 5-ACRE RIPARIAN AREA OF THE PUNAWAI (SPRING-FED STREAM) THAT FEEDS INTO A COMPLEX OF WETLANDS, THEN ENTERS THE HULEIA RIVER. THE RESTORATION ACTIVITIES INCLUDE REMOVAL OF GARBAGE THAT HAS ACCUMULATED OVER DECADES OF PEOPLE DUMPING TRASH IN THE AREA, REMOVAL OF INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES, PLANTING OF NATIVE RIPARIAN SPECIES AND CLEARING STREAM DEBRIS BLOCKAGES WHERE APPROPRIATE TO REESTABLISH FLOW.

THIS PROJECT WILL RESTORE SEVEN ACRES OF RIPARIAN AREA ADJACENT TO A HISTORIC AUWAI FRESHWATER CHANNEL THAT RUNS ALONG THE NORTHERN PORTION OF ALAKOKO FISHPOND ON THE ISLAND OF KAUAI THE GOAL OF THE RESTORATION WORK IS TO RESTORE BOTH THE NATURAL WATERCOURSE AND THE CONTIGUOUS ANCIENT HAWAIIAN WATER SYSTEM THAT WAS EXPOSED AS A RESULT OF ONGOING INVASIVE TREE REMOVAL RESTORATION OF THE CHANNEL AND RIPARIAN AREA ALONG THE AUWAI WILL IMPROVE HYDROLOGIC FUNCTION, RESTORE PHYSICAL HABITAT FOR NATIVE AQUATIC SPECIES, IMPROVE WATER QUALITY, INCREASE FRESHWATER FLOW AND INCREASE CHANNEL CAPACITY THE MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE REMOVAL OF INVASIVE VEGETATION GRASS AND LOW LYING SHRUBS , REMOVAL OF ORGANIC DEBRIS AND SEDIMENTATION FROM THE CHANNEL, SITE PREPARATION AND PLANTING OF NATIVE AND TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN PLANTS AND COORDINATING VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT THE IMPROVED AQUATIC HABITATS WILL INCREASE PRODUCTION OF CULTURALLY AD RECREATIONALLY IMPORTANT FISHERY SPECIES AND WILL BENEFIT NATIVE HAWAIIAN SUBSISTENCE USE AND RECREATIONAL USE OF THESE AQUATIC RESOURCES
