HOWEVER, SIMPLY MAKING DATA PUBLIC IN GENERALIZED REPOSITORIES DOES NOT MEAN IT IS FAIR. DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC ARCHIVING WILL LOWER THE BARRIER FOR SCIENTISTS TO MAKE THEIR DATA FAIR. THE TARGET DISCIPLINES OF HYDROLOGY, OCEANS, AND SEISMOLOGY WERE CHOSEN BECAUSE OF THEIR SUBSTANTIAL BUT DISPARATE EXISTING RESOURCES AND THEIR DEMONSTRATED RECEPTIVENESS TO OPEN DATA PRACTICES. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BUILD COALITIONS IN THREE SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES BY ENGAGING STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDING RESEARCHERS, PUBLISHERS AND DATA MANAGERS AT MULTIPLE WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING EVENTS. THEY WILL DEVELOP COMMUNITY-VETTED, DISCIPLINARY-SPECIFIC DATA SHARING FRAMEWORKS; A WEB PLATFORM TO IMPLEMENT THE FRAMEWORK; AND DISCIPLINARY LEADERS AND LIAISONS TO SUSTAIN THE FRAMEWORK. THE FRAMEWORK OF COMMUNITY PRACTICES WILL ALSO BE CAPTURED TO INFORM FUTURE USE IN OTHER DISCIPLINES. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL BUILD A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE FOR THREE TARGET DISCIPLINES TO DRIVE THEIR COMMUNITY TOWARD A SHARED VISION OF COMMON DATA RESOURCES INCLUDING DIGITAL OBJECTS, METHODS AND TOOLS THAT ARE GROUNDED IN OPEN SCIENCE AND FINDABLE, INTEROPERABLE, ACCESSIBLE, AND REUSABLE (FAIR) DATA PRINCIPLES. THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC FRAMEWORKS WILL COALESCE EXISTING COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND HELP TO IDENTIFY AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF LEADING PRACTICES, VOCABULARIES, AND INTEGRATION OF STANDARDS. THE VETTING PROCESS INCLUDES OPEN SCIENCE PRACTITIONERS PROVIDING A STEADY INFLUENCE ON THE LONG-TERM VALUE OF DATA AS AN ASSET AND THE OVERALL NEED FOR BETTER DATA MANAGEMENT, PRESERVATION METHODS AND PROTOCOLS. PRODUCING USABLE PROJECTIONS OF FUTURE GLOBAL, LOCAL AND EXTREME SEA-LEVEL CHANGE REQUIRES HARMONIZING AND INTEGRATING INFORMATION FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF OBSERVATIONS AND MODELS. IT ALSO REQUIRES ASSESSING THE LIKELIHOOD OF DIFFERENT OUTCOMES UNDER BOTH DIFFERENT POTENTIAL FUTURE SCENARIOS AND DIFFERENT SETS OF STRUCTURAL MODELING ASSUMPTIONS. THE GOAL OF THIS WORKSHOP IS TO UNDERSTAND RECENT AND ONGOING PROGRESS RELATED TO PROJECTING SEA-LEVEL CHANGE AND ITS DRIVERS, AS WELL AS USER PERSPECTIVES ON WHAT HAS AND HAS NOT WORKED IN THE USE AND COMMUNICATION OF PRIOR SEA-LEVEL PROJECTIONS. THE WORKSHOP WILL FOCUS BOTH ON PROCESS UNDERSTANDING AND ON THE ABILITY TO DERIVE STATISTICAL AND/OR PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIPS FROM PROCESS UNDERSTANDING. THE WORKSHOP WILL ALSO FEATURE DISCUSSIONS OF PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE OBSERVATIONS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DECADES TO REDUCE UNCERTAINTIES IN LONG-TERM PROJECTIONS. EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE, AND MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE PROVIDED. WITH THIS WORKSHOP, THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION AIMS TO SYNTHESIZE THE CURRENT STATE OF THE SCIENCE ON SEA LEVEL PROJECTIONS IN A MANNER THAT BUILDS AN ACTIONABLE ROADMAP TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF INTEGRATED SEA-LEVEL PROJECTIONS. TO DO SO REQUIRES UNDERSTANDING OF HOW MODELS AND OBSERVATIONS ARE INTEGRATED, AS WELL AS ASSESSING THE PROBABILITY OF DIFFERENT OUTCOMES UNDER FUTURE SCENARIOS AND WITH DIFFERENT SETS OF ASSUMPTIONS. IT FURTHER REQUIRES CONSIDERATION OF BOTH THE CENTRAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF LIKELIHOODS, AND POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PROCESSES CHARACTERIZED BY A LACK OF AGREEMENT ON LIKELIHOOD (AND THUS DEEP UNCERTAINTY). WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS IN MIND, THIS WORKSHOP WILL COVER TOPICS SUCH AS STERODYNAMIC SEA-LEVEL CHANGE, GLACIERS, LAND WATER STORAGE, ICE-SHEET FEEDBACKS AND INSTABILITIES, LARGE-SCALE OCEAN CIRCULATION CHANGES, VERTICAL LAND MOTION, SEA-LEVEL EXTREMES, APPLICATION, AND USABILITY. THE MOST VIGOROUS SYSTEMS ARE DRIVEN BY HEAT FROM MAGMAS UNDER THE LONG OCEAN RIDGES, WHICH FORM NEW OCEAN CRUST; OTHER SYSTEMS MOVE THROUGH OLDER CRUST AND SEDIMENT, AND OTHER SUBMARINE OR ISLAND VOLCANIC SYSTEMS. OCEAN WATER MOVES THROUGH THESE SYSTEMS AND REACTS WITH THE CRUST AND SEDIMENTS, INFLUENCING THE CHEMISTRY OF THE OCEAN OVER TIME. THIS PROCESS ALSO PRODUCES KEY MINERAL DEPOSITS ON THE OCEAN FLOOR. UNDERSTANDING THESE SYSTEMS IS IMPORTANT, FOR EXAMPLE, IN CONSIDERING THE ROLE OF THE OCEAN FOR LONG TERM STORAGE OF CAPTURED CARBON DIOXIDE AND THUS ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE. OTHERS, SUCH AS CHOLERA OUTBREAKS, OCCUR INDIRECTLY AS EXTREME WEATHER OVERWHELMS INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CLEAN WATER, SANITATION, AND OTHER NECESSITIES OF HUMAN HEALTH. TO DISCOVER THE BARRIERS TO GEO-INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP, THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION, THE LARGEST GEOSCIENCE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY, WITH OVER 60,000 MEMBERS, WILL HOLD A SERIES OF VIRTUAL EVENTS TO SURVEY ITS MEMBERSHIP THAT REACHES ACROSS ALL FIELDS OF THE GEOSCIENCES. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE WORK INCLUDE UNCOVERING THE INCENTIVES, TRAINING, OPPORTUNITIES, AND EDUCATIONAL VEHICLES NEEDED TO CREATE A LARGE COHORT OF GEO-ENTREPRENEURS AND STARTUP FOUNDERS. EFFORTS WILL INCLUDE ROBUST REPRESENTATION FROM EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS AND MEMBERS OF UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY WILL MAKE PUBLIC THE REPORT OF THEIR FINDINGS BY POSTING IT ON THEIR WEBSITE AND WILL CONVENE A PANEL AT THEIR DECEMBER 2023 NATIONAL MEETING TO DISCUSS THE FINDINGS AND GENERATE DISCUSSION ON ADDITIONAL MEANS OF INCREASING GEO-ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITIES AND MINDSETS AMONG GEOSCIENCE FACULTY AND THEIR STUDENTS. TO SOLICIT IDEAS ON DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURIAL TALENT AND SPEED THE PACE OF INNOVATION AND DELIVERY OF INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS ON ENERGY, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND CLIMATE ISSUES TO SOCIETY AND THE ECONOMY, THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION (AGU) IS CONVENING KEY PLAYERS FROM ACROSS THE GEO-ENTREPRENEURSHIP ECOSYSTEM TO IDENTIFY DIFFERENT PATHWAYS THAT POTENTIAL ENTREPRENEURS WITH GEOSCIENCE TRAINING CAN TAKE TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT ADVANCE SUSTAINABLE, RESILIENT, AND INCLUSIVE FUTURES. WITH INPUT FROM THE GEOSCIENCE COMMUNITY AND GUIDANCE FROM A STEERING COMMITTEE OF GEO-ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERTS, AGU WILL DELIVER A REPORT THAT IDENTIFIES BARRIERS, HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESSES, AND OFFERS CONCRETE RECOMMENDATIONS TO SPUR AND SCALE GEO-ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITY. THE REPORT WILL SET A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET IN, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR, UNIVERSITY FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES. THE WORK WILL INVOLVE FOUR PHASES: (1) IDENTIFYING KEY STAKEHOLDERS AND INTERVIEWING GEO-ENTREPRENEURS AS WELL AS FORMING AN 8-MEMBER STEERING COMMITTEE TO GUIDE THE PROJECT; (2) DEVELOPING, DISTRIBUTING, AND ANALYZING A SURVEY OF THE AGU AND GEO-ENTREPRENEURIAL COMMUNITY; (3) ENGAGING FIVE VIRTUAL FOCUS GROUPS TO EXPLORE KEY THEMES IDENTIFIED BY THE SURVEY RESULTS; AND (4) CONVENING AN IN-PERSON MEETING OF EXPERTS TO DEVELOP A FINAL REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS. TO ASSIST IN THIS PROCESS, THE STEERING COMMITTEE WILL GUIDE THE OVERALL PROJECT BY IDENTIFYING LEADERS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND STAKEHOLDERS IN GEO-ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION. THEY WILL ALSO HELP TO DEVELOP THE SURVEY AND FOCUS GROUP QUESTIONS. AT THE DECEMBER 2023 AGU NATIONAL MEETING THAT ATTRACTS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ATTENDEES, A PANEL OF EXPERTS AND DISCUSSION SESSION WILL BE HELD TO FURTHER ENGAGE GEOSCIENCE COMMUNITIES AND PRESENT POSSIBLE MEANS BY WHICH THEY CAN BE ACTIVE IN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS AND IN THE CREATION OF GEO-FOUNDED STARTUPS AND COMMERCIAL VENTURES PROVIDING SOLUTIONS TO PRESSING CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS EXTREME HEAT AND COLD SNAPS, FLOODING, THE NORTHWARD MIGRATION OF TROPICAL INSECT-BORNE DISEASES, THE INCREASING OCCURRENCE OF HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION DUE TO RELEASE AND/OR BURIAL OF ANTHROPOGENICALLY-GENERATED POLLUTANTS ORIGINATING FROM WASTE, MANUFACTURING, AND MINING ARE HAVING SIGNIFICANT AND SERIOUS IMPACTS ON THE HEALTH OF OUR NATION'S POPULATION AS WELL AS ON PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. TO IDENTIFY POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION (AGU), A PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY OF OVER 60,000 EARTH; OCEAN; AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS, STUDENTS, AND PRIVATE SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES, WILL SURVEY ITS CONSTITUENTS AND COLLECT INPUT ON WHERE THE GEOSCIENCES ARE BEST POSITIONED TO MAKE FAST PROGRESS IN AMELIORATING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK, AGU WILL CONVENE AND GATHER INFORMATION FROM DIVERSE SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS INCLUDING SCIENTISTS, PRACTITIONERS, ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE LEADERS, INDUSTRY LEADERS, ENTREPRENEURS, EDUCATION EXPERTS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS ON THIS BROAD TOPIC. A STEERING COMMITTEE MADE UP THAT INCLUDES THE AGU GEOHEALTH LEADERSHIP WILL HELP GUIDE THIS WORK. THE ACTIVITIES WILL LEAD TO A SET OF RECOMMENDATIONS AND PROSPECTS THAT WILL COLLECTIVELY: (1) IDENTIFY HIGH-PRIORITY CHALLENGES IN GEOHEALTH THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED IN THE NEAR TERM (2-4 YEARS); (2) PROVIDE A ROAD-MAP OR PATH FOR DEVELOPING PROGRAMS AROUND THESE CHALLENGES; (3) PROVIDE A SET OF IDEAS TO COMMUNICATE THE IMPORTANCE OF GEOHEALTH INTERNATIONALLY; AND (4) ADDRESS THE NEED FOR TRAINING AND CAREER PATHS IN GEOHEALTH. RESULTS OF THEIR COMMUNITY SURVEY WILL BE SUMMARIZED IN A REPORT THAT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. KEY OUTCOMES WILL BE THE IDENTIFICATION OF GEOSCIENCE-RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES THAT HAVE THE HIGHEST HUMAN-HEALTH IMPACTS AND ARE PRIMED FOR IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION AND/OR INTERVENTION. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE ACTIVITY WILL BE TO IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF AND BETTER MANAGEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION (AGU) WILL CONDUCT A BROAD, INCLUSIVE, RESULTS-DRIVEN SURVEY OF ITS CONSTITUENTS, WHICH INCLUDE SCIENTISTS AND STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE EARTH, OCEAN, AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES. MEMBERS FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR ARE ALSO INVOLVED. THE GOAL OF THE INFORMATION COLLECTION EXERCISE IS TO GATHER IDEAS AND RESEARCH AREAS WHERE GEOSCIENTISTS, COMMUNITIES, AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS CAN COME TOGETHER TO ACCELERATE OUR NATION'S ABILITY TO MITIGATE AND MINIMIZE HUMAN HEALTH IMPACTS OF CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT DUE TO CLIMATE AND ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES. AGU WILL BUILD OFF AND LEVERAGE KEY RESOURCES, LEADERSHIP, PARTNERS, AND PROGRAMS THEY HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED IN THE AREA OF GEOHEALTH. IT WILL INCLUDE DISCUSSIONS WITH PARTICIPANTS SELECTED FROM THE AGU COLLEGE OF FELLOWS NEW FRONTIERS COMMITTEE, A COMMITTEE THAT HAS ALREADY FOCUSED ON SUPPORTING GEOHEALTH OVER THE PAST YEAR. IT WILL ALSO INCLUDE DISCUSSIONS WITH AGU SECTION LEADERSHIP, ESPECIALLY IN THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS OF GEOHEALTH, ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES, BIOGEOSCIENCES, CRYOSPHERE SCIENCES, OCEAN SCIENCE, GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE, HYDROLOGY, EDUCATION, EARTH AND SPACE INFORMATICS, EARTH AND PLANETARY SURFACE PROCESSES, AND SCIENCE AND SOCIETY. THESE SECTIONS ALL INCLUDE ACTIVE STUDENT AND EARLY CAREER MEMBERS. AGU LEADERS WILL ALSO BE INVOLVED FROM THE AGU DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION EFFORT AND ITS ADVISORY COMMITTEE; FROM THE THRIVING EARTH EXCHANGE AND SELECTED FELLOWS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS; AS WELL AS MEMBERS OF ITS COMMUNITY SCIENCE GROUP WHICH INCLUDES SEVERAL RELEVANT PARTNERS INCLUDING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC HEALTH ASSOCIATION. THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS WILL HOST A TECHNICAL CONFERENCE WITH THE THEME ?GEOSCIENCES UNITED: COLLABORATING FOR A SUSTAINABLE AND EQUITABLE FUTURE AT THE 42ND NABG ANNUAL TECHNICAL CONFERENCE?. REQUESTED SUPPORT WILL DEFRAY REGISTRATION, TRAVEL AND SUBSISTENCE EXPENSES OF APPROXIMATELY FORTY STUDENT PARTICIPANTS. THE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD AT THE AGU HEADQUARTERS IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON 27-30 SEPTEMBER 2023 AS A HYBRID EVENT (IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL). THE PIS EXPECT THAT THIS CONFERENCE WILL ATTRACT ATTENDEES REPRESENTING MANY OF THE FEDERAL AGENCIES BECAUSE OF ITS CENTRAL LOCATION AT AGU HEADQUARTERS IN WASHINGTON, DC. IN ADDITION, THE PIS WILL ACTIVELY RECRUIT A NATIONAL CADRE OF STUDENTS FROM MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS (MSIS) AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE MAJORING IN GEOSCIENCE DISCIPLINES REPRESENTING ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES, GEOSCIENCE, MARINE SCIENCES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES. STUDENTS WILL PRESENT RESEARCH AND PARTICIPATE IN OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE CONFERENCE. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO EXPAND THE DISCIPLINARY REPRESENTATION OF NABG TO INCLUDE MORE STUDENTS FROM MSIS INTERESTED IN THE BROADER DISCIPLINES OF GEOSCIENCES AND TO BUILD NEW RELATIONSHIPS TO UNITE GEOSCIENCES DISCIPLINES. DURING THE PAST YEAR, LAND-FALLING HURRICANES AND EXTREME DROUGHT/EXTREME FLOODING, AND WILDFIRES DIRECTLY IMPACTED THE U.S. THUS, THE RELEVANCE OF ATMOSPHERIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES TO NABG MEMBERS AND THEIR EMPLOYERS PRESENTS OBVIOUS OPPORTUNITIES TO BROADEN THE DISCIPLINARY AREAS OF NABG WHILE ALSO ENGAGING A BROADER AUDIENCE OF SCHOLARS AND STUDENTS IN THESE DISCIPLINES. K LAUEAS 2018 ERUPTION WAS ITS MOST IMPACTFUL IN CENTURIES ANDONE OF THE MOST COSTLY VOLCANIC DISASTERS IN U.S. HISTORY, INVOLVING THE ERUPTION OF MORE THAN ONECUBIC KILOMETER OF BASALT, A MAGNITUDE 7 FLANK EARTHQUAKE, AND THE VOLCANOS LARGEST SUMMITCOLLAPSE SINCE AT LEAST THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. PROJECT TITLE: INTEGRATED ASSESSMENTS: SOLVING WATER AVAILABILITY CHALLENGESTHROUGH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY FRAMEWORK" CHAPMAN CONFERENCEPERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: 8/1/2022 THROUGH 11/1/2022THE MAIN RESEARCH OBJECTIVE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO HOST AN INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON THE TOPIC OF WATER AVAILABILITY. THIS CONFERENCE WILL UNCOVER AND MAKE EXPLICIT DIVERGENT VIEWS, ASSUMPTIONS, DATA TYPES, AND RESEARCH METHODS THAT MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR SCIENTISTS FROM DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES TO CONDUCT INTEGRATED WATER SCIENCE. THE GOAL IS TO DEVELOP A FOUNDATION UPON WHICH A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE TO FACILITATE INTEGRATED WATER ASSESSMENTS CAN BE BUILT. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY 1) INTEGRATING DEFINITIONS OF WATER AVAILABILITY AT THE CONCEPTUAL LEVEL; 2) IDENTIFYING METRICS AND METHODS TO MEASURE WATER AVAILABILITY IN AN INTEGRATED WAY; AND 3) PROPOSING BEST PRACTICES TO TRANSLATE AN INTEGRATED UNDERSTANDING OF WATER AVAILABILITY INTO DECISION-MAKING. THE CONFERENCE IS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 12-16, 2022, IN GOLDEN, COLORADO. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: ECOLOGIES OF PARTICIPATION IN ISLAND KARST SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION: A COMPARATIVE MULTIMETHODS APPROACH -COASTS AND ISLANDS ARE AT THE EPICENTER OF TWO COMPOUNDING CHALLENGES: VARIABILITY IN CLIMATE AND THE IMPACT OF DEVELOPMENT. ASSESSING THE FULL SCOPE OF THESE CHALLENGES REQUIRES GOING BEYOND WHAT IS PHYSICALLY VISIBLE OR ON THE SURFACE OF THESE ENVIRONMENTS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY THE CASE IN COASTAL AND ISLAND ENVIRONMENTS WITH KARST, LANDSCAPES IN WHICH WATER FORMS A DISTINCT TOPOGRAPHY INCLUDING CAVES, SINKHOLES, AND GROUNDWATER AQUIFERS. PAST AND ONGOING EXPLORATION, SCIENTIFIC STUDY, AND CONSERVATION WORK IN THE COASTAL KARST SYSTEMS IN THE US TERRITORY OF PUERTO RICO (PR) ILLUSTRATE WHAT IS AT STAKE WITH THE STUDY AND CONSERVATION OF KARST. WHILE 20% OF THE UNITED STATES (US) IS KARST, IT IS THE SOURCE OF 40% OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC?S DRINKING WATER. IN PUERTO RICO THESE VALUES ARE MUCH HIGHER, GIVEN THAT 37% OF THE TERRITORY IS KARST. DRAWING FROM THEORIES AND METHODS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (STS), ANTHROPOLOGY, AND GEOGRAPHY, THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY AND THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION EXAMINES THE PAST AND CURRENT ROLE OF MOSTLY NON-TRADITIONAL ACTORS AND THEIR VOLUNTEER-BASED ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO THE EXPLORATION, SCIENCE, AND CONSERVATION OF KARST IN ITS VARIED FORMS. THIS KNOWLEDGE WILL MAKE AN ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY, PRESENT CHALLENGES, AND FUTURE OF GEOLOGY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND OTHER KINDRED SCIENCES FOCUSED ON CRITICAL ZONES ENVIRONMENTS IN THE US. DATA WILL INCLUDE ARCHIVAL INFORMATION, INTERVIEWS, FOCUS GROUPS, AND ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELD-BASED VISITS WITH PARTICIPANTS. THIS DATA WILL BE USED TO GENERATE THE SPATIAL AND SOCIAL NETWORKS UNDERGIRDING COASTAL KARST SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION EFFORTS MOSTLY CARRIED OUT BY CAVE EXPLORERS, SCIENTISTS, CONSERVATION PRACTITIONERS AND VOLUNTEERS. THE STS-INFORMED ECOLOGIES OF PARTICIPATION FRAMEWORK WILL INFORM THIS NETWORK ANALYSIS WHICH AIMS TO OPERATIONALIZE THE WHO, WHAT, AND HOW OF PARTICIPATION IN ONGOING SOCIO-TECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. RESULTS WILL BE DISSEMINATED IN BOTH SPANISH AND ENGLISH TO A BROADER AUDIENCE USING ARCGIS STORYMAPS, AN EFFECTIVE WEB-BASED AND INTERACTIVE PLATFORM. WHILE THIS IDEA IS STRAIGHTFORWARD, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MEASURE THESE TERMS TO DETERMINE HOW THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE BALANCE. THESE IDEAS WILL BE DISCUSSED IN A CONFERENCE WHICH WILL BRING SCIENTISTS WHO STUDY METEOROLOGY, ECOLOGY, HYDROLOGY AND BEYOND TOGETHER TO DISCUSS WHAT HAS BEEN TERMED THE ?ENERGY BALANCE CLOSURE? PROBLEM. THE SOCIETAL IMPACTS ARE WIDE-RANGING, AS THE MODELS THAT USE THESE CONCEPTS ARE INCREASINGLY APPLIED TO WEATHER, AGRICULTURAL, AND HUMAN AND ECOSYSTEM HEALTH PROBLEMS. THE FUNDING FROM THIS AWARD WILL ALLOW EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CONFERENCE. THE CHAPMAN CONFERENCE: ENERGY BALANCE CLOSURE PROBLEM: CAUSES, CORRECTIONS, AND IMPLICATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE IN BOULDER, COLORADO FROM SEPTEMBER 15 TO 19, 2025. THE CONFERENCE WILL FOCUS ON LONGSTANDING QUESTIONS SURROUNDING THE LACK OF CLOSURE OF THE SURFACE ENERGY BUDGET THAT HAS PLAGUED EDDY-COVARIANCE (EC) STUDIES FOR DECADES.
