ACCORDINGLY, HBCU-UP SUPPORTS THE PROJECT FROM THE QUALITY EDUCATION FOR MINORITIES NETWORK (QEM), WHICH AIMS TO IMPLEMENT A STRATEGIC SOCIAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO SHIFT SOCIAL PERCEPTIONS, STEM IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT, AND PUBLIC DISCOURSE REGARDING STEM INNOVATION GENERATED BY HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS). THE PROJECT WILL LEVERAGE SOCIAL MARKETING TO MITIGATE OR ELIMINATE DOCUMENTED BARRIERS THAT POTENTIALLY STIFLE BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND PUBLIC AWARENESS OF STEM INNOVATIONS AT HBCUS. THE PROJECT GOAL IS TO DEVELOP A DIGITAL DISSEMINATION PLATFORM FOR HBCU STEM INNOVATION THAT INCREASES THE PUBLIC?S AWARENESS OF HBCU STEM RESEARCH AND INNOVATION WHILE EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF THE PLATFORM?S SOCIAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN ON STEM IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT AND SCIENTIFIC EPISTEMOLOGICAL THINKING. THE THREE OBJECTIVES ARE TO (1) INCREASE THE PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF HBCU RESEARCH AND STEM INNOVATION, (2) EXPLORE SELF-REPORTED PERCEPTIONS OF STEM IDENTITY, AND (3) CAPTURE SCIENTIFIC EPISTEMOLOGICAL THINKING ABOUT STEM IN THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO INCREASE THE SUBMISSION OF SUCCESSFUL RESEARCH PROPOSALS ORIGINATING AT HBCUS. IT DEVELOPS AND IMPLEMENTS A REPLICABLE MODEL FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SUPPORT FOR HBCU RESEARCHERS AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS PERSONNEL AT HBCUS THAT WILL STRENGTHEN RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEWING SKILLS. THE PROJECT WILL RECRUIT TWO GROUPS OF PEOPLE AT EACH ONE OF THE HBCUS INVOLVED: ONE GROUP FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS AND A SECOND GROUP THAT RECEIVES IMMERSIVE TRAINING IN PROPOSAL REVIEW. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE TWO FACE-TO-FACE CONVENINGS AND INTENSIVE TRAINING AND SUPPORT IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2025 ENGINES COMPETITION. THERE ARE TWO CORE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS WORK. FIRST, IT PROPOSES ENGAGING 5.9% (6/101 HBCUS) OF THE HBCUS NATIONALLY. LEARNINGS FROM THIS PROJECT COULD INFORM THE UNIVERSE OF HBCUS AS TO HOW TO ENHANCE THEIR OWN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS. SECONDLY, THERE IS NATIONAL INTEREST TO INVEST IN AN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM WITH AN HBCU AS THE HUB GIVEN THEIR GEOGRAPHIC PLACEMENT AND DIVERSITY CONTRIBUTIONS IN STEM. THE REPORT GENERATED FROM THE STUDY WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO HBCUS THAT ARE NOT CARNEGIE-R2 INSTITUTIONS BUT ARE RESEARCH ORIENTED, AND SEEKING TO GROW THEIR INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS IN AN IMPACTFUL WAY. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO HAVE MORE HBCUS SERVING AS PROJECT LEADS IN THE CONSIDERATION FOR A 2025 COMPETITION FOR THE NSF ENGINE PROGRAM THROUGH DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING AN INTENSIVE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM INFORMED BY DATA ANALYTICS AND EXPLICIT CURRICULUM THAT ADVISES THE PILOT HBCUS ON HOW TO LEVERAGE THEIR STRENGTHS FOR NSF ENGINES. THIS GOAL IS GROUNDED IN THE RATIONALE THAT THERE IS A NATIONAL INTEREST TO HAVE INVESTMENT IN AN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM WITH AN HBCU AS THE HUB. BY ENHANCING AN HBCU?S ABILITY TO DEMOCRATIZE COST-INTENSIVE ENTREPRENEURIAL AND SCIENCE-BASED TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES FOR ECONOMICALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES IN WHICH THEY ARE LOCATED THERE ARE LONG-TERM ECONOMIC IMPACTS TO BE HAD. THE METHODS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE PROVIDING HIGH RISK, SHORT-TERM INTENSIVE ASSET-BASED ?TRUSTED ADVISOR? SUPPORT APPROACH WITH A PILOT OF HBCUS. THE NORTH CAROLINA-SUPPORTING SPONSORED PROGRAM SUCCESS (NC-SSPS) PROJECT WILL CATALYZE THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSFORMATIVE IDEAS AND A SCALABLE MODEL TO STRENGTHEN THE NATION?S RESEARCH ENTERPRISE BY GROWING CAPABILITY AND ACCESS TO RESEARCH SUPPORT AND SERVICE INFRASTRUCTURE PARTICULARLY AT EMERGING RESEARCH AND MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS. THE GOAL IS TO CONVENE SPONSORED PROGRAMS PROFESSIONALS AND SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE (COP) ENGAGEMENT WITH THE NATIONAL SPONSORED PROGRAMS ADMINISTRATORS ALLIANCE OF HBCUS INC (NSPAA). CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE PRODUCTION OF A STATEWIDE GUIDEBOOK, A STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES MANUAL THAT EACH CAMPUS CAN CUSTOMIZE FOR ITS USE. HOWEVER, THEY FACE INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES THAT CAN UNDERMINE BEST EFFORTS TO RECRUIT, RETAIN AND PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL CONDUCT A 3-DAY GRANTSMANSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP, WITH POST-WORKSHOP ASSISTANCE, TO SUPPORT 30 MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION (MSI), COMMUNITY COLLEGE (CC), AND UNDERREPRESENTED BIOSCIENCE FACULTY IN ORDER TO NURTURE THEIR PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS. THIS PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE IS NECESSARY TO CULTIVATE A MORE INFORMED AND COMPETITIVE SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS TO A BROAD RANGE OF PROGRAMS WITHIN THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION?S (NSF) DIRECTORATE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIO). FACULTY FROM LOCAL ATLANTA, GA, EPSCOR STATES (LA, MS, AL) AND SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL MSIS AND CCS INTERESTED IN GAINING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES IN SELECTED NSF BIO PROGRAMS, WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. THROUGH THESE EFFORTS, THE PROJECT HOPES TO SHIFT THE THINKING ASSOCIATED WITHIN THE USE OF COMMODITIZED LANGUAGE SPECIFIC TO STEM BROADENING PARTICIPATION EFFORTS, AND IN DOING SO, SHIFT HOW INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARS AND THEIR INSTITUTIONS APPROACH THIS TOPIC. IT DEVELOPS AND IMPLEMENTS A REPLICABLE MODEL FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SUPPORT FOR HBCU RESEARCHERS AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS PERSONNEL AT HBCUS THAT WILL STRENGTHEN RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEWING SKILLS. THE PROJECT WILL RECRUIT TWO GROUPS OF PEOPLE AT EACH ONE OF THE HBCUS INVOLVED: ONE GROUP FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS AND A SECOND GROUP THAT RECEIVES IMMERSIVE TRAINING IN PROPOSAL REVIEW. AMONGST OTHER TRAINING ACTIVITIES, PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJECT WILL BE MENTORED IN THE PROCESS OF PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT AND PROPOSAL SUBMISSION AND PARTICIPATE IN MOCK REVIEW PANELS. AN EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT COMPONENT WILL EXAMINE THE IMPACTS OF THE TRAINING. THIS AWARD IS FUNDED IN WHOLE OR IN PART UNDER THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT OF 2021 (PUBLIC LAW 117-2). INTERNS, REPRESENTING DIVERSE INSTITUTIONS, ARE EXPOSED TO A RANGE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE DIRECT BENEFITS TO THEM PROFESSIONALLY, AS WELL AS INDIRECT BENEFITS TO THEIR HOME INSTITUTIONS AND CAMPUS-BASED PEERS. THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PROVIDES PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TO FACILITATE THE INTERNS? SUCCESSFUL PURSUIT OF STEM-FOCUSED ADVANCED DEGREES AND CAREERS. THIS HUMAN CAPACITY BUILDING ENDEAVOR WILL HELP TRAIN A DIVERSE, ENGAGED, AND GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE STEM WORKFORCE PREPARED TO MEET FUTURE CHALLENGES THROUGH DISCOVERY AND INNOVATION. THE TDIS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY LEVERAGES AND EXPANDS THE INTERNS' PRIOR LEARNING FROM SCHOOL WITH NEW EXPERIENCES FROM NSF TRAINING AND MENTORING, AS WELL AS QEM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ENGAGEMENTS. INTERNS FURTHER DEVELOP THEIR RESEARCH SKILLS; STRENGTHEN THEIR AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF PROGRAMS, POLICIES, AND ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE QUALITY OF STEM EDUCATION, PARTICULARLY IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES; AND SHARPEN THEIR AWARENESS OF GENERAL STEM-FOCUSED POLICIES, LEGISLATION, AND PROGRAMS. INTERNS BENEFIT FROM OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN RESEARCH AND DATA ANALYSIS; EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF GRADUATE SCHOOL AND STEM CAREER PREPARATION; AND GAIN EFFECTIVE NETWORKING AS WELL AS COMMUNICATIONS (WRITING, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND COMPUTER) SKILLS. THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION, GUIDANCE, AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES TO ASSIST IN SUCCESSFULLY DEVELOPING AND SUBMITTING PROPOSALS TO THE TWO STEM TEACHER-FOCUSED PROGRAMS. WE WILL: 1) PLAN AND CONDUCT A 2.5-DAY ANNUAL PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS FOR 120 FACULTY RESEARCHERS TO INCREASE THEIR AWARENESS OF THE TWO FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES; AND 2) PROVIDE POST-WORKSHOP MENTORSHIP AND GUIDANCE LED BY QEM CONSULTANTS TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUBMISSION OF COMPETITIVE PROPOSALS. THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE, WE ANTICIPATE A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF PROPOSALS SUBMITTED BY RESEARCHERS AT MSIS, DRIVING FORWARD INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE IN STEM EDUCATION. THIS CONFERENCE PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. IT ALSO SUPPORTS RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION OF K-12 STEM TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE TWO FACE-TO-FACE CONVENINGS AND INTENSIVE TRAINING AND SUPPORT IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2025 ENGINES COMPETITION. THERE ARE TWO CORE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS WORK. FIRST, IT PROPOSES ENGAGING 5.9% (6/101 HBCUS) OF THE HBCUS NATIONALLY. LEARNINGS FROM THIS PROJECT COULD INFORM THE UNIVERSE OF HBCUS AS TO HOW TO ENHANCE THEIR OWN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS. SECONDLY, THERE IS NATIONAL INTEREST TO INVEST IN AN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM WITH AN HBCU AS THE HUB GIVEN THEIR GEOGRAPHIC PLACEMENT AND DIVERSITY CONTRIBUTIONS IN STEM. THE REPORT GENERATED FROM THE STUDY WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO HBCUS THAT ARE NOT CARNEGIE-R2 INSTITUTIONS BUT ARE RESEARCH ORIENTED, AND SEEKING TO GROW THEIR INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS IN AN IMPACTFUL WAY. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO HAVE MORE HBCUS SERVING AS PROJECT LEADS IN THE CONSIDERATION FOR A 2025 COMPETITION FOR THE NSF ENGINE PROGRAM THROUGH DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING AN INTENSIVE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM INFORMED BY DATA ANALYTICS AND EXPLICIT CURRICULUM THAT ADVISES THE PILOT HBCUS ON HOW TO LEVERAGE THEIR STRENGTHS FOR NSF ENGINES. THIS GOAL IS GROUNDED IN THE RATIONALE THAT THERE IS A NATIONAL INTEREST TO HAVE INVESTMENT IN AN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM WITH AN HBCU AS THE HUB. BY ENHANCING AN HBCU?S ABILITY TO DEMOCRATIZE COST-INTENSIVE ENTREPRENEURIAL AND SCIENCE-BASED TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES FOR ECONOMICALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES IN WHICH THEY ARE LOCATED THERE ARE LONG-TERM ECONOMIC IMPACTS TO BE HAD. THE METHODS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE PROVIDING HIGH RISK, SHORT-TERM INTENSIVE ASSET-BASED ?TRUSTED ADVISOR? SUPPORT APPROACH WITH A PILOT OF HBCUS. THIS IS INTENDED TO ATTAIN THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES (1) COMPLETION OF FULLY DEVELOPED PROPOSALS FOR SPRING 2025 SUBMISSION AND MASTERY OF SUCCESSFUL ENGINES CONSORTIUM DEVELOPMENT; AND (2) INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM GROWTH ASSESSED AND ALSO MEASURED THROUGH THE PROPOSAL FEEDBACK REVIEW PROCESS THAT DEMONSTRATES INCREASED RECOGNITION OF HBCU ABILITY TO INNOVATE. CONFERENCE: EARLY CAREER DEVELOPMENT (CAREER) PROGRAM WORKSHOP FOR STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH AT MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS -THERE IS A NEED TO DEVELOP A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF STEM EDUCATION RESEARCHERS FROM MANY DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS. THIS WORKSHOP WILL ENGAGE FACULTY FROM MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN GRANT-FUNDING FOR THEIR STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH AND ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE CAREER PROGRAM. THE SESSIONS WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPING A RESEARCH AGENDA, PROPOSAL PREPARATION, AND CONNECTING WITH OTHER EARLY CAREER SCHOLARS IN STEM EDUCATION. MENTORS AND ORGANIZERS WILL INCLUDE CAREER AWARDEES FROM THE DIRECTORATE FOR STEM EDUCATION AND RESEARCHERS AT MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS. TO SUPPORT THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE EARLY-CAREER FACULTY, THE WORKSHOP WILL HAVE TWO MAJOR COMPONENTS (1) IN-PERSON MEETING AND (2) FOLLOW-UP WORK FOR PARTICIPANTS TO DEVELOP PROPOSALS AND THEIR RESEARCH AGENDAS. THE SESSIONS WILL ALSO EXPLORE THE LOGISTICS OF PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT, AND THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF SUPPORT FOR EARLY CAREER FACULTY IS HELPING THEM FORM NETWORKS FOR RESEARCH, TEACHING, AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT. PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER AS A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE. MENTORS WILL BE IDENTIFIED TO SUPPORT THE EARLY CAREER STEM EDUCATION RESEARCHERS IN DEVELOPING THEIR RESEARCH CONCEPTS. THIS AWARD IS FUNDED BY THE EDU CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM, IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: DIRECTORATE FOR STEM EDUCATION (IUSE: EDU), THE DISCOVERY RESEARCH PREK-12 (DRK-12) PROGRAM, AND THE LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCES FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION (LSAMP). UNFORTUNATELY, IN THE ESPCOR STATES OF ARKANSAS, MISSISSIPPI, AND LOUISIANA ONLY A SMALL PROPORTION OF INSTITUTIONS ARE LIKELY TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS TO THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AS COMPARED TO THEIR COUNTERPARTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THERE IS CRITICAL NATIONAL NEED TO SUPPORT THE ENGAGEMENT OF EPSCOR JURISDICTIONS IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT WHILE ALSO UNDERSTANDING HOW TO MITIGATE POLICIES OR PRACTICES THAT ARE BARRING THEIR FULL ENGAGEMENT IN THE NATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FUNDING ECOSYSTEM. FOR STEM EDUCATION PROJECTS, INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN EPSCOR JURISDICTIONS REPRESENT IMPORTANT LOCATIONS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, AND STEM ENGAGEMENT. THIS WORKSHOP WILL PROVIDE FACULTY AT INSTITUTIONS IN THE THREE STATES THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH COMMUNITY THAT WILL SUPPORT THEIR STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH PROJECTS. THE WORKSHOP WILL ALSO SUPPORT STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS AT THEIR INSTITUTIONS IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE GRANT-WRITING AND FUNDING PROCESS. THIS WORKSHOP SUPPORTS THEIR LEARNING ABOUT NSF FUNDING, BUT ALSO THE GRANT-WRITING PROCESS AND RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROCESS IN GENERAL. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE WORKSHOP IS FOR PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR INSTITUTIONS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE GRANT-WRITING AND SUBMISSION PROCESS FOR STEM EDUCATION PROJECTS. THE PROJECT HAS FOUR OBJECTIVES: (1) CONDUCT A PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP FOR FIFTY RESEARCHERS FROM ARKANSAS, LOUISIANA, AND MISSISSIPPI TO DEMYSTIFY NSF FUNDING MECHANISMS AND THE REVIEW PROCESS, (2) DEVELOP A COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH COMMUNITY THAT WILL INCLUDE ONLINE COMMUNICATION PORTALS FOR ATTENDEES LOOKING TO DEVELOP AND SUBMIT PROPOSALS TO NSF, (3) DISMANTLE BARRIERS TO ENGAGEMENT WITH NSF BY COLLECTING PERCEIVED FACTORS FROM ATTENDEES THROUGH FOCUS GROUP ACTIVITY WITH INCREASED COMMUNICATION BETWEEN NSF-INTERESTED AND NSF-FUNDED RESEARCHERS TO SUPPORT GRANT-WRITING AND SUBMISSION LONG-TERM, AND (4) PROVIDE SUPPORT THROUGH POST-WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES THAT DECONSTRUCT THE CORE COMPONENTS OF NSF PROPOSALS. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BARRIERS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO GRANT-WRITING FOR NSF AND BEYOND THAT EXIST FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE THREE EPSCOR STATES. CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE PRODUCTION OF A STATEWIDE GUIDEBOOK, A STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES MANUAL THAT EACH CAMPUS CAN CUSTOMIZE FOR ITS USE. NSPAA WILL SUPPORT MAINTAINING THE COP BY OFFERING AN ASSOCIATION FOR ATTENDEES TO JOIN AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE CONFERENCE. CONFERENCE: A PROPOSAL TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO INCREASE THE RESEARCH COMPETITIVENESS OF MSIS, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND URM FACULTY TO BIO-WIDE PROGRAMS -IN ORDER TO BUILD AN INCLUSIVE STEM WORKFORCE, THE UNITED STATES MUST ASSIST IN BUILDING THE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT INSTITUTIONS AND IN GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS THAT PRODUCE THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF MINORITIES IN STEM, WHICH INCLUDES MSIS AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES LOCATED WITHIN EPSCOR STATES. THESE INSTITUTIONS ARE IMPORTANT AND EFFECTIVE INCUBATORS OF STEM PROFESSIONALS. HOWEVER, THEY FACE INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES THAT CAN UNDERMINE BEST EFFORTS TO RECRUIT, RETAIN AND PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL CONDUCT A 3-DAY GRANTSMANSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP, WITH POST-WORKSHOP ASSISTANCE, TO SUPPORT 30 MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION (MSI), COMMUNITY COLLEGE (CC), AND UNDERREPRESENTED BIOSCIENCE FACULTY IN ORDER TO NURTURE THEIR PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS. THIS PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE IS NECESSARY TO CULTIVATE A MORE INFORMED AND COMPETITIVE SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS TO A BROAD RANGE OF PROGRAMS WITHIN THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION?S (NSF) DIRECTORATE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIO). FACULTY FROM LOCAL ATLANTA, GA, EPSCOR STATES (LA, MS, AL) AND SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL MSIS AND CCS INTERESTED IN GAINING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES IN SELECTED NSF BIO PROGRAMS, WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE FACULTY THAT HAVE NOT PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED TO THE BIO DIRECTORATE AND THOSE FROM EPSCOR STATES. THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE DESIGNED TO AID THESE FACULTY WITH KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO COMPETE FOR GRANT FUNDING NEEDED TO SUPPORT THEIR RESEARCH, TEACHING, AND TRAINING OF THEIR UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS. RESEARCH SESSIONS WILL INCLUDE EMERGING THEORETICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL WORK THAT HAS POTENTIAL TO YIELD THE FORMATION OF EVIDENCED-BASED/RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICES FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM. EVALUATION SESSIONS WILL INVOLVE THE EXAMINATION OF THE CURRENT STATE OF EVALUATION AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DIRECTLY ADDRESSED TO MOVE FORWARD WITH SUSTAINABLE CHANGES. PIPELINE TO PATHWAYS WILL HAVE SUBTOPICS IN THE FOLLOWING MAJOR AREAS: (1) THEORY DRIVEN MENTORING PRACTICES, (2) IDENTIFYING AND MITIGATING BIAS, (3) EVIDENCED-BASED MODELS FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM EDUCATION, (4) HUMANIZING RESEARCH METHODS (QUALITATIVE, INTERSECTIONALITY APPROACHES, ETC.), AND (5) ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION INNOVATION FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM. THROUGH THESE EFFORTS, THE PROJECT HOPES TO SHIFT THE THINKING ASSOCIATED WITHIN THE USE OF COMMODITIZED LANGUAGE SPECIFIC TO STEM BROADENING PARTICIPATION EFFORTS, AND IN DOING SO, SHIFT HOW INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARS AND THEIR INSTITUTIONS APPROACH THIS TOPIC. THE COMMODITIZATION OF STUDENTS LIMITS THE STEM FIELD?S ABILITY TO HUMANIZE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE WHICH INADVERTENTLY CREATES BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE MENTORSHIP ADOPTION, TREATING STUDENTS AS METRICS/NUMBERS, POTENTIALLY IMPEDING AUTHENTIC MEANINGFUL INCLUSIVITY INTO STEM DISCIPLINES. A NEW LANGUAGE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO ACTUALIZE AND ENHANCE THEIR PROFESSIONAL FUTURE ?SENSE OF SELF.? THIS CONFERENCE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CONTRIBUTE TO NEW KNOWLEDGE IN STIMULATING CONVERSATIONS FROM AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO STEM EDUCATION ISSUES RELATED TO BROADENING PARTICIPATION BY ACTIVELY TRAINING INDIVIDUALS IN HUMANIZATION TECHNIQUES?CULTURAL COMPETENCE, CULTURAL AWARENESS, MENTORSHIP EFFECTIVENESS, AND METHODOLOGY THAT BETTER ALIGNS WITH SUCH PRACTICES. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY NSF'S EHR CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM. THE ECR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES FUNDAMENTAL STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH THAT GENERATES FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD. INVESTMENTS ARE MADE IN CRITICAL AREAS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL, BROAD AND ENDURING: STEM LEARNING AND STEM LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE ACCUMULATION OF ROBUST EVIDENCE TO INFORM EFFORTS TO UNDERSTAND, BUILD THEORY TO EXPLAIN, AND SUGGEST INTERVENTION AND INNOVATIONS TO ADDRESS PERSISTENT CHALLENGES IN EDUCATION. BCSER-IID: FOUNDATIONS FOR A STEM WHAT WORK CLEARINGHOUSE FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION RESEARCH IN STEM EDUCATION -THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR A CLEARINGHOUSE OF BROADENING PARTICIPATION STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH AT HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS). THE CLEARINGHOUSE IS ENVISIONED AS AN ONLINE PLATFORM THAT WILL BE POPULATED WITH DATA COLLECTED THROUGH A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW DURING THIS INITIAL PHASE. THE INVESTIGATOR USED THE VITAE RESEARCHER DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK TO IDENTIFY THE STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH SKILLS GAPS THAT WILL BE THE FOCUS OF A COMPREHENSIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DOMAINS INCLUDE KNOWLEDGE AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES; PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS; RESEARCH GOVERNANCE AND ORGANIZATION; AND ENGAGEMENT, INFLUENCE AND IMPACT. THE GOALS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY COMPLETING FORMALIZED TRAINING IN META-ANALYSIS RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY, ACQUIRING TRAINING IN DATABASE FOUNDATIONS AND DATA ANALYTICS, AND RECEIVING MENTORING. THE PROJECT WILL POSITION THE INVESTIGATOR TO CONTRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP THAT INFORMS EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS AT HBCUS AND TOPICS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL PRODUCE A META-ANALYSIS OF NSF-FUNDED BROADENING PARTICIPATION INTERVENTIONS AT HBCUS BY ANSWERING TWO RESEARCH QUESTIONS: (1) WHAT BROADENING PARTICIPATION RESEARCH INTERVENTIONS WORK AND FOR WHOM? AND (2) WHAT ARE THE MEAN CORRECTED CORRELATIONS BETWEEN PROGRAM TRAITS IN NSF-FUNDED HBCU BROADENING PARTICIPATION INTERVENTIONS AND STUDENT SUCCESS METRICS AT HBCUS? THE RESEARCH DESIGN IS A QUANTITATIVE RETROSPECTIVE SYSTEMATIC REVIEW. THE RATIONALE FOR THIS DESIGN SELECTION IS THE POWER OF META-ANALYTICAL STUDIES FOR RESEARCHERS. THE RESEARCH WILL BE GUIDED BY EXPERT MENTORS AND INFORMED BY THE EXPERTISE ACQUIRED THROUGH STRUCTURED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES.
