SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL OCEAN SCIENCE ACTIVITIES THROUGH SCOR -SUPPORT IS PROVIDED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC ACTIVITIES OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON OCEANIC RESEARCH (SCOR) THAT ARE RELEVANT TO U.S. INTERESTS IN MARINE SCIENCES AND THE DIVISION OF OCEAN SCIENCES. SUPPORT OF THESE INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES THROUGH SCOR BEGAN IN 1987. THE SCOR PROVIDES AN INTERNATIONAL, INTERDISCIPLINARY, NON-GOVERNMENTAL FOCUS FOR OCEAN RESEARCH AND MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR NATIONAL OCEAN SCIENCE COMMUNITIES (1) PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS, (2) IDENTIFY IMPORTANT OCEAN SCIENCE ISSUES AND CREATE WORKING GROUPS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES, AND (3) BUILD GLOBAL OCEAN SCIENCE CAPACITY. FUNDING IN THIS REQUEST PROVIDES PARTIAL SUPPORT THE SCIENTIFIC STEERING COMMITTEES (SSCS) AND/OR INTERNATIONAL PROJECT OFFICE OF THE INTERNATIONAL OCEAN CARBON COORDINATION PROJECT (IOCCP), THE SURFACE OCEAN ? LOWER ATMOSPHERE STUDY (SOLAS), THE INTEGRATED MARINE BIOSPHERE RESEARCH (IMBER), GEOTRACES, AND THE CHANGING OCEAN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (COBS) PROJECTS THESE ACTIVITIES ALSO ARE SUPPORTED BY OTHER INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL SPONSORS. THESE MAJOR PROGRAMS HAVE ORIGINS IN US AND HAVE TURNED TO SCOR TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR INTERNATIONAL PLANNING AND COORDINATION. SCOR'S IMPACT HAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE EVIDENT IN THE STANDARDIZATION OF MEASUREMENT PROTOCOLS, SHARING OF DATA, COORDINATION OF SHIP TIME, AND THE ENLARGEMENT OF FIELD STUDIES WHICH WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION. SCOR TRAVEL GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO ENABLE SUCH INDIVIDUALS TO ATTEND INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS RELEVANT TO THEIR SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS AND TO THOSE OF SCOR AND THE DIVISION OF OCEAN SCIENCES OF NSF. THIS ONGOING PROJECT HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE OF SCOR'S EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO MARINE SCIENTISTS IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND WITH ECONOMIES IN TRANSITION FOR EXAMPLE EASTERN EUROPEAN NATIONS AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES. THE IMPACTS OF THIS ACTIVITY EXTEND BEYOND THE OCEAN SCIENCES INTO OTHER SCIENTIFIC TOPICS BY STIMULATING SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. IN MANY CASES, PERSONAL CONNECTIONS AND COLLABORATIONS THAT CAN RESULT FROM CONTACTS MADE THROUGH THESE TRAVEL GRANTS CAN HAVE LONG-LASTING EFFECTS BOTH IN INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRY'S SCIENCE COMMUNITIES AS THE INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED RISE THROUGH THE RANKS OF SCIENCE AND SCIENCE POLICY. THIS AWARD PROVIDES FUNDS TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON OCEANIC RESEARCH (SCOR) FOR A LONG-STANDING PROGRAM OF TRAVEL ASSISTANCE TO QUALIFIED AND ACTIVE OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCHERS AND EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND NATIONS WITH ECONOMIES IN TRANSITION. REPRESENTATIVES FROM ALL THE MAJOR SPACE AGENCIES WITH AN INTEREST IN OCEAN-COLOUR RADIOMETRY ATTEND THESE MEETINGS HELPING TO BRING TOGETHER BOTH THE USERS AND THE PROVIDERS OF OCEAN COLOUR DATA FOR IN-DEPTH DISCUSSIONS OF REQUIREMENTS FOR OCEAN-COLOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. RESEARCH SCIENTISTS FROM NASA AND OTHER U.S. INSTITUTIONS HAVE PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN BOTH MEETINGS ACTING AS KEYNOTE SPEAKERS OR CHAIRS/CO-CHAIRS FOR BREAKOUT SESSIONS COVERING A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS. THESE MEETINGS EXPOSE SCIENTISTS TO NEW SUBJECT AREAS AND IDEAS THUS FACILITATING THE PRODUCTION OF NEW OCEAN COLOUR PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS IN SUPPORT OF VARIOUS IMPORTANT EARTH SCIENCE QUESTIONS INCLUDING CLIMATE CHANGE. THE SURFACE OCEAN LOWER ATMOSPHERE STUDY (SOLAS) WAS DESIGNED TO STUDY THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE AIR AND SEA WHICH ARE IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW THESE TWO COMPONENTS OF THE EARTH SYSTEM INFLUENCE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. OCEAN AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS OFTEN DO NOT WORK TOGETHER SO SOLAS CREATED (EARLY IN THE PROJECT) A MECHANISM TO BUILD SCIENTIFIC CAPACITY IN THE SCIENCE OF THIS INTERFACE. SOLAS HAS ORGANIZED A 2-WEEK INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN ALTERNATING YEARS SINCE 2003 (THOUGH THE MOST RECENT CLASS TOOK PLACE IN 2013). THE FIRST FIVE SUMMER SCHOOLS WERE HELD IN CORSICA FRANCE FOLLOWED BY A SUMMER SCHOOL IN CHINA IN 2013. THE SOLAS SUMMER SCHOOLS BRING TOGETHER ABOUT 70 EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS MOSTLY PHD-LEVEL STUDENTS WITH 15 WORLDLEADING SCIENTISTS FROM A VARIETY OF FIELDS. THEY PARTICIPATE IN A COMBINATION OF PLENARY LECTURES AND HANDS-ON PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS IN SMALL GROUPS ON CORE SOLAS SCIENCE BUT ALSO ON "SOFT SKILLS" SUCH AS SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION. BY PROVIDING EXCELLENT TRAINING THESE SUMMER SCHOOLS HELP PREPARE THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF GLOBAL CHANGE. THE SUMMER SCHOOLS PROVIDE EXTENSIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS TO INTERACT AND NETWORK WITH THEIR PEERS WHO WILL BECOME THEIR FUTURE SCIENTIFIC COLLEAGUES.THE 2018 SUMMER SCHOOL WILL FOLLOW A SIMILAR FORMAT TO THE PREVIOUS SIX SCHOOLS AND WILL BE BACK IN CORSICA FRANCE FROM 23 JULY TO 4 AUGUST 2018.
