COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: TRI-ALLIANCE FOR POST-AWARD INNOVATION -THE TRI-ALLIANCE CONSORTIUM AIMS TO TRANSFORM POST-AWARD ACTIVITIES AT EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS (ERIS) TO REDUCE ADMINISTRATIVE BURDEN, BETTER SUPPORT FACULTY IN THEIR RESEARCH, AND INCREASE GRANT ACTIVITY. WITHOUT ADEQUATE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE, FACULTY AND STAFF AT ERIS FACE DISTINCT CHALLENGES, INCLUDING LACK OF SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING THE POST-AWARD RESPONSIBILITIES, ACCESS TO ACCURATE INFORMATION, AND POST-AWARD COMPLIANCE. ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES CAN HELP INCREASE THE RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DIVERSE INSTITUTIONS, THEREBY SUPPORTING U.S. ECONOMIC GROWTH. THE TRI-ALLIANCE CONSORTIUM, WHICH INCLUDES LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY, AND UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO, IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCING RESEARCH EXCELLENCE THROUGH COLLABORATION AND RESOURCE SHARING. THESE CALIFORNIA-BASED INSTITUTIONS, PART OF THE ASSOCIATION OF JESUIT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITY (AJCU), AND RECOGNIZED AS ERIS, WILL FOCUS ON THREE CORE COMPONENTS: 1) BUILDING CAPACITY FOR POST-AWARD SERVICE STRUCTURES, FUNCTIONS, AND DATA COLLECTION; 2) DEVELOPING SHARED EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCE MATERIALS TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND REDUCE ADMINISTRATIVE BURDENS; AND 3) PILOTING INNOVATIVE CROSS-DIVISION SUPPORT ROLES THAT SPAN PRE- AND POST-AWARD ADMINISTRATION. CYBERCORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOR SERVICE (RENEWAL) - PREPARING SCHOLARS FOR A CAREER IN THE GOVERNMENT?S CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE -CYBERSECURITY IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO SOCIETY, WHETHER FOR NATIONAL DEFENSE OR FOR THE PROTECTION OF CITIZENS AS THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TODAY'S DIGITAL WORLD TO MAINTAIN THEIR JOBS, HEALTH AND PROSPERITY. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE MANY ACTORS READY TO STEAL PERSONAL IDENTITIES, ILLEGALLY TAKE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FROM U.S. COMPANIES, AND EVEN TO MAKE LIFE DIFFICULT THROUGH INTERFERING WITH ENERGY SUPPLY CHAINS OR POISONING WATER RESOURCES. TO ENSURE SAFETY, STEPS ARE NEEDED TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH SUPERIOR CYBERSECURITY EXPERTS IN THE GOVERNMENT TO GUARD AGAINST SUCH GROWING THREATS. TO MAXIMIZE THE IMPACT OF THE CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE, THESE EXPERTS MUST ALSO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF SOCIETY INCLUDING WOMEN, MINORITIES, VETERANS, AND THOSE WITH DISABILITIES. BY WAY OF THIS RENEWAL, MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY WILL CONTINUE TO RECRUIT, EDUCATE, AND PLACE IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE, A DIVERSE SET OF ACADEMICALLY QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS FROM A WIDE SET OF BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING COMMUNITY COLLEGES. THE GRANT WILL SUPPORT THEIR ACHIEVEMENT OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND READINESS FOR THEIR PLACEMENT IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE. THEY WILL BE PROVIDED A FULL SCHOLARSHIP (TUITION AND SOME LIVING EXPENSES FOR THE FINAL 2 YEARS OF THEIR PROGRAM) AS WELL AS A FIRST-CLASS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE (EARNING A BS, MS, OR DSC IN CYBERSECURITY). THE PROGRAM WILL EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES IN CYBERSECURITY SO THAT THEY CAN PROTECT ALL OF SOCIETY AS THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO GROW. THIS PROJECT BUILDS ON THE SUCCESS AND EXPERIENCE OF THE PREVIOUSLY FUNDED SFS PROJECT AND WILL BE GUIDED BY FIVE OBJECTIVES. FIRST, IS TO CONTINUE TO RECRUIT A WELL-QUALIFIED, DIVERSE GROUP OF STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS. SECOND IS TO ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDENTS FOR GOVERNMENT WORK. THIRD IS TO RETAIN AND GRADUATE ALL STUDENTS WITH A MINIMUM GPA OF 3.5 AND FACILITATE 100% PLACEMENT IN GOVERNMENT POSITIONS. FOURTH IS TO DEVELOP PROFESSIONALS CAPABLE OF DESIGNING, BUILDING, AND MANAGING SECURE INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR THE NEW CONNECTED WORLD. FINALLY, IT IS TO EVALUATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH ENHANCED STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTIONS, MENTORING, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND JOINT INVOLVEMENT IN RESEARCH CONTRIBUTES TO POSITIVE WORKPLACE OUTCOMES, PARTICULARLY FOR THE MEMBERS OF GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY. MARYMOUNT HAS INCREASED THE EFFECTIVENESS AND SUSTAINABILITY OF ITS PROGRAMS BY IMPLEMENTING AN AGILE CURRICULUM PROCESS TO KEEP PACE WITH EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CLOUD COMPUTING. THESE CURRICULUM CHANGES ARE INFORMED BY WORKFORCE STUDIES INCLUDING A DETAILED UNDERSTANDING OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEEDS, AND BY ALLIANCES WITH LARGER PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS FOR RESEARCH AND RESOURCES. MARYMOUNT IS AN INCLUSIVE AND REPRESENTATIVE INSTITUTION THAT HAS SUCCESSFULLY PLACED WOMEN, UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES, VETERANS, STUDENTS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND THE NEURODIVERSE IN GOVERNMENT CYBERSECURITY POSITIONS. THE PROJECT WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE POOL OF GRADUATES, PREPARED TO COMBAT THE SECURITY THREATS OF TODAY AND TOMORROW, BUT ALSO RESPONDING TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI) EFFORTS IN THE GOVERNMENT. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY THE CYBERCORPS(R) SCHOLARSHIP FOR SERVICE (SFS) PROGRAM, WHICH FUNDS PROPOSALS ESTABLISHING OR CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS IN CYBERSECURITY AND ALIGNS WITH THE U.S. NATIONAL CYBER STRATEGY TO DEVELOP A SUPERIOR CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE. FEASIBILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF GAMIFIED DIGITAL INTERVENTION TO PREVENT ALCOHOL AND MENTAL HEALTH RISKS - PROJECT ABSTRACT SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN CONSUME ALCOHOL, EXPERIENCE ALCOHOL-RELATED PROBLEMS, AND SUFFER FROM MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AT HIGHER RATES THAN DO THEIR HETEROSEXUAL PEERS. ALTHOUGH SEVERAL CLINICAL PROGRAMS ARE BEING DEVELOPED FOR SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN (SMW) SEEKING TREATMENT FOR THESE PROBLEMS, ONLY A SMALL PROPORTION OF SMW NEEDING IT EVER SEEK TREATMENT. MEANWHILE, PREVENTIVE INTERVENTIONS ABLE TO AVOID THESE PROBLEMS BY REDUCING DRINKING AND IMPROVING PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG NON-TREATMENT SEEKING SMW HAVE BEEN SLOW TO EMERGE. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH BUILDS ON R21AA025767, WHICH ESTABLISHED THE PRELIMINARY FEASIBILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF DELIVERING PERSONALIZED NORMATIVE FEEDBACK ON DRINKING AND COPING BEHAVIORS TO SMW WITHIN A BROADER APP-BASED SOCIAL COMPETITION DESIGNED TO CHALLENGE HARMFUL STEREOTYPES ABOUT THIS POPULATION AND FOSTER A SUPPORTIVE VIRTUAL COMMUNITY. IN OUR PILOT TRIAL, SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN ENTHUSIASTICALLY ENGAGED WITH THE APP IN THE ABSENCE OF PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES FOR DOING SO. FURTHER, RELATIVE TO A SUB-SAMPLE THAT RECEIVED PNF ON CONTROL TOPICS WITHIN THE COMPETITION, THOSE WHO RECEIVED PNF ON DRINKING AND COPING SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED THEIR CONSUMPTION AND NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES OVER A 4-MONTH PERIOD. MOREOVER, QUALITATIVE FEEDBACK SUGGESTED THAT NEGATIVE STEREOTYPE DISCONFIRMING PNF AND SOCIAL MEDIA INSPIRED COMMUNITY FEATURES (PRESENT ACROSS CONDITIONS) MAY HAVE ALSO PROVIDED PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS BEYOND THE ALCOHOL AND COPING PNF EVALUATED. TO BUILD ON THESE PROMISING FINDINGS AND REMEDY LIMITATIONS, THIS RESEARCH PROPOSES TO FIRST OPTIMIZE THE APP BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS IN THE PILOT TRIAL (AIM1) AND THEN CONDUCT A LARGE, SOPHISTICATED, TYPE I IMPLEMENTATION-EFFECTIVENESS TRIAL TO SIMULTANEOUSLY EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF THE FULLY FEATURED APP ON DRINKING, ALCOHOL-RELATED PROBLEMS, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING RELATIVE TO A LIMITED FEATURE PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL CONTROL VERSION OF THE APP (AIM2), IDENTIFY EXPLANATORY PSYCHOLOGICAL MECHANISMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FULLY FEATURED APP’S EFFECTIVENESS (AIM3), ELUCIDATE DEMOGRAPHIC AND SEXUAL MINORITY STIGMA-RELATED MODERATORS (AIM4), AND EXAMINE ENGAGEMENT, ACCEPTABILITY, AND SUSTAINABILITY OF USE UNDER REAL WORLD CONDITIONS AMONG A SUB-SAMPLE OF UNINCENTIVIZED, FULLY FEATURED APP USERS (AIM 5).

OVER ITS 6-YEAR DURATION, THIS PROJECT WILL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS TO 22 UNIQUE FULL-TIME STUDENTS WHO ARE PURSUING BACHELOR?S DEGREES IN BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, OR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. FIRST YEAR STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE UP TO 4 YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT. THROUGH TARGETED COMMUNICATION AND ROBUST MARKETING, THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED AND RETAINED IN STEM PROGRAMS AT MARYMOUNT IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE. SCHOLARS WILL PARTICIPATE IN COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE THEM TO CITIZEN SCIENCE, EMPOWER THEM TO PROMOTE STEM IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH AN AMBASSADOR PROGRAM, AND ALLOW THEM TO ENGAGE WITH OTHER STEM PROFESSIONALS BY HOSTING A CITIZEN SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM. SCHOLARS WILL GAIN STEM-ESSENTIAL SKILLS THROUGH PROCESS-ORIENTED, TOPICAL CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS AND USE THOSE SKILLS TO SERVE THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. SCHOLARS WILL DEVELOP MULTI-STAGE CAREER PLANS AND RECEIVE MENTORING THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM FROM FACULTY AND ALUMNI. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF LOW-INCOME, HIGH-ACHIEVING UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THE FOLLOWING AIMS WILL BE ADDRESSED (1) RECRUIT AND ENROLL 22 UNIQUE SCHOLARS ACROSS THREE COHORTS; (2) RETAIN AND GRADUATE PROGRAM SCHOLARS WITHIN FOUR YEARS; AND (3) PLACE ALL SCHOLARS IN STEM JOBS OR GRADUATE PROGRAMS WITHIN 1 YEAR OF GRADUATION. STEM SKILLS INCLUDING THEIR ABILITY TO THINK CREATIVELY, ANALYZE DATA CRITICALLY, WORK EFFECTIVELY IN A TEAM, EXHIBIT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND LEND A CRITICAL EYE TO EXAMINE THEIR OWN PERCEPTIONS. PARTICIPATION IN CITIZEN SCIENCE IS HYPOTHESIZED TO INCREASE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND MAKE STEM MORE ACCESSIBLE. BEST PRACTICES FOR EMBEDDING CITIZEN SCIENCE IN THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM OF STEM PROGRAMS AT MARYMOUNT WILL BE EXPLORED, AND A MODEL FOR CITIZEN SCIENCE IMPLEMENTATION AT OTHER UNIVERSITIES WILL BE CREATED. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO STRENGTHEN STEM SKILLS, WHICH WILL RESULT IN GREATER STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION AND PROMOTE STEM CAREERS. THE SKILLS DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT WILL ALLOW FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS AND THE PROFESSIONAL MOBILITY OF PARTICIPANTS. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO BENEFIT THE COMMUNITIES WITH WHICH SCHOLARS ENGAGE, DEMONSTRATING HOW SCIENCE CAN BE USED AS AN INSTRUMENT OF SERVICE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF?S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT PARENT- BASED INTERVENTIONS (PBIS) THAT TARGET PARENTS OF INCOMING STUDENTS CAN BE POWERFUL ADJUNCTS TO EXISTING STUDENT-LEVEL ALCOHOL PROGRAMS. ALTHOUGH TURISSI’S PARENT HANDBOOK IS THE ONLY PBI RECOMMENDED BY THE NIAAA TO REDUCE ALCOHOL RISK DURING THE TRANSITION INTO COLLEGE, THIS “GOLD STANDARD” PBI HAS DEMONSTRATED ONLY MODEST EFFECTS ON STUDENT DRINKING IN TRIALS AND HAS RELIED ON MONETARY INCENTIVES TO FACILITATE PARENT ENGAGEMENT, WHICH DO NOT TRANSLATE TO EFFECTIVE REAL-WORLD IMPLEMENTATION. AS SUCH, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE PBIS THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED EASILY AND WITHOUT INCENTIVES. ONE EFFECTIVE MOTIVATIONAL PBI COMPONENT IDENTIFIED BY OUR LAB IS PERSONALIZED NORMATIVE FEEDBACK (PNF) DESIGNED TO CORRECT PARENTS’ MISPERCEPTIONS ABOUT FIRST-YEAR STUDENT DRINKING, OTHER PARENTS’ APPROVAL FOR SUCH DRINKING, AND ALCOHOL COMMUNICATION. FURTHER, OUR PILOT TRIAL FOUND THAT COUPLING PARENT HANDBOOK-LIKE PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL CONTENT WITH SUCH PNF IN A SOCIAL MEDIA-INSPIRED APP (PARENTCANDOR OR PC PNF+) PREVENTED AND DECREASED RISKY DRINKING IN STUDENTS WHEN PARENTS WERE NOT INCENTIVIZED. QUALITATIVE DATA COLLECTED FROM PARENTS ALSO SUGGESTED SEVERAL WAYS TO IMPROVE PARENTS’ ENGAGEMENT WITH THE PC PNF+ APP WHICH ARE LIKELY TO TRANSLATE INTO EVEN STRONGER EFFECTS THAN OBSERVED IN THE INITIAL TRIAL. BUILDING ON THIS WORK, PHASE 1 OF THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO OPTIMIZE THE PC PNF+ APP BASED ON PILOT PARENT FEEDBACK. FURTHER, FNFORMED BY THEIR COMMENTS ABOUT TIME CONSTRAINTS, WE WILL ALSO DEVELOP A LESS TIME-INTENSIVE, EMAIL-BASED SOCIAL NORMS MARKETING CAMPAIGN (SNMC+) PBI THAT COMMUNICATES SIMILAR NORMATIVE INFORMATION AS IN THE PC PNF+ APP WITH BREIF HANDBOOK-LIKE TIPS FOR PARENTING AROUND ALCOHOL. PHASE 1 WILL ALSO INCLUDE A NATIONAL NORMS DOCUMENTATION SURVEY (N=2000) OF PARENTS OF INCOMING COLLEGE STUDENTS TO IDENTIFY INCLUSIVE AND GENERALIZABLE NORMS TO FEATURE IN PNF+ AND SNMC+ INTERVENTIONS. ADDITIONALLY, PARENT FOCUS GROUPS AND INTERVIEWS WITH UNIVERSITY STAKEHOLDERS AT TWO SITES WILL BE CONDUCTED TO IDENTIFY HOW THESE PBI APPROACHES CAN BE PACKAGED TO MAXIMIZE USEFULNESS FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF PARENTS AND UNIVERSITIES. THEN, IN PHASE 2, A LARGE, MULTI-SITE IMPLEMENTATION-EFFECTIVENESS TRIAL WITH THREE COHORTS OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS (N=2400) WILL COMPARE THE FEASIBILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF PNF+ AND SNMC+ AGAINST THE “GOLD STANDARD” HANDBOOK AND A NO-PBI CONTROL. PARENTS WILL BE INVITED BY THEIR CHILD’S UNIVERSITY TO ONE OF THE PBIS JUST AS THEY WOULD BE IN THE REAL-WORLD. WE WILL OBJECTIVELY EXAMINE WHICH PBI IS MOST ENGAGING TO PARENTS, AS WELL AS WHICH IS MOST EFFECTIVE AT PREVENTING AND REDUCING STUDENT DRINKING AND CONSEQUENCES. IN ADDITION, PARENT ENGAGEMENT, ALCOHOL APPROVAL, AND COMMUNICATION WILL BE EXAMINED AS MEDIATORS OF PBI EFFECTS ON STUDENT-LEVEL OUTCOMES. FINALLY, THE MOST ENGAGING AND EFFECTIVE PBI WILL BE FURTHER DISCUSSED WITH UNIVERSITY STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY WAYS TO INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF REAL-WORLD ADOPTION.

ADAPTING AND TESTING A NOVEL SELF-COMPASSION INTERVENTION TO REDUCE LUNG CANCER STIGMA - PROJECT SUMMARY GIVEN ADVANCES IN SCREENING AND TREATMENT, THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE U.S. LIVING WITH LUNG CANCER IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE BY 25% (FROM 571,340 TO 724,610) BY 2030. NEARLY ALL (95%) PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH LUNG CANCER REPORT EXPERIENCING STIGMA (I.E., THE PERCEPTION AND INTERNALIZATION OF NEGATIVE APPRAISAL FROM OTHERS ATTRIBUTED TO ONE’S LUNG CANCER), WHICH IS PERHAPS THE MOST PROMINENT PSYCHOSOCIAL ISSUE IN THIS POPULATION AND CONTRIBUTES TO POOR PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH OUTCOMES. A CRITICAL GAP IN THE FIELD OF CANCER CONTROL SCIENCE IS THE LACK OF EMPIRICALLY SUPPORTED PATIENT-FOCUSED INTERVENTIONS THAT TARGET THE REDUCTION OF LUNG CANCER STIGMA FOR THIS GROWING PATIENT POPULATION. THE GOALS OF THIS K99/R00 ARE TO ADAPT THE EXISTING MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION (MSC) PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTION TO ADDRESS ANTICIPATED DELIVERY CHALLENGES AND TARGET THE REDUCTION OF LUNG CANCER STIGMA AS WELL AS TO SEEK PRELIMINARY EVIDENCE FOR THE EFFICACY OF THE ADAPTED MSC INTERVENTION IN REDUCING LUNG CANCER STIGMA. THE K99 STUDY WILL INVOLVE A TWO-PHASE PROCESS OF 1) CONDUCTING STAKEHOLDER FOCUS GROUPS TO GUIDE THE ITERATIVE ADAPTATION OF MSC INTERVENTION ACTIVITIES AND MATERIALS AND 2) CONDUCTING IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH LUNG CANCER PATIENTS TO EXPLORE PATIENTS’ REACTIONS TO INTERVENTION CONTENT AND PREFERENCES FOR FORMAT AND DELIVERY. THE R00 STUDY WILL INVOLVE A TWO-PHASE PROCESS OF 1) CONDUCTING A PILOT RCT (N=60) TO TEST PRELIMINARY EFFICACY OF THE ADAPTED MSC INTERVENTION ON PRIMARY (LUNG CANCER STIGMA) AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES (DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS, QUALITY OF LIFE) AND 2) CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS WITH PURPOSIVELY SAMPLED HIGH RESPONDERS (N=10) AND NON-RESPONDERS (N=10) FROM THE MSC CONDITION (ASSESSED POST-INTERVENTION) TO EXAMINE PARTICIPANTS’ REACTIONS TO STUDY PARTICIPATION. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS K99/R00 IS TO PROVIDE DR. WILLIAMSON WITH ADDITIONAL TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT CANCER CONTROL INVESTIGATOR TRANSLATING FINDINGS FROM BASIC BEHAVIORAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TAILORED PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS FOR CANCER PATIENTS. TRAINING AIMS INCLUDE: 1) PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTION DEVELOPMENT AND ADAPTATION IN CANCER; 2) ADVANCED QUALITATIVE AND MIXED-METHODS DESIGN AND ANALYSIS; 3) TRANSLATIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH (SYNERGY BETWEEN BASIC AND APPLIED HEALTH SCIENCE); 4) DELIVERY OF MINDFULNESS- AND COMPASSION-BASED INTERVENTIONS IN CANCER CARE; AND 5) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. DR. WILLIAMSON IS MENTORED BY DR. JAMIE OSTROFF AT MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER ALONG WITH EXPERT SUPPORT FROM CO-MENTORS (DRS. LISA CARTER-HARRIS AND JUN MAO) AND OTHER SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTORS (DR. CHRISTOPHER GERMER, MS. KATHLEEN LYNCH), WHO ARE ALL COMMITTED TO DR. WILLIAMSON’S CAREER DEVELOPMENT. THE PROPOSED TRAINING PLAN WILL FACILITATE DR. 2 COLLEGE TRUTHS & 1 LIE: SOCIAL MEDIA EMBEDDED GAMIFIED NORMATIVE RE-EDUCATION - PROJECT SUMMARY TRADITIONAL SOCIAL NORMS MARKETING CAMPAIGNS (SNMCS), WHICH SEEK TO REINFORCE RISK-REDUCING ACCURATE CAMPUS DRINKING NORMS VIA POSTERS, HAVE BEEN A STAPLE AT UNIVERSITIES FOR OVER TWO DECADES DESPITE DIFFICULTIES IN ASSESSING CAMPAIGN EXPOSURE, AND BOOMERANG EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTANCE AMONG HEAVY DRINKERS. FURTHER, EXPOSURE TO ALCOHOL CONTENT ON INSTAGRAM AND SNAPCHAT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO UNDERMINE TRADITIONAL NORMATIVE RE-EDUCATION PROGRAMS. RECENT EFFORTS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DRAWN ON THE EMERGING GAMIFICATION LITERATURE TO BOLSTER STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ATTENTION, DECREASE REACTANCE, AND THEREBY INCREASE THE EFFICACY AND REAL-WORLD UTILITY OF ONE-DOSE PERSONALIZED NORMATIVE FEEDBACK (PNF). THIS PROPOSAL LEVERAGES GAME MECHANICS IDENTIFIED IN OUR PREVIOUS PROJECTS TO INNOVATIVELY MODERNIZE SNMCS, WHICH ARE UNIVERSAL (CAMPUS-WIDE) AND TYPICALLY EMPLOYED ALONGSIDE PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL AND PNF INTERVENTIONS. FURTHER, WE PLAN TO UTILIZE POSTS ON INSTAGRAM AND SNAPCHAT TO ADAPT THE MODE OF DELIVERY TO SPECIFICALLY COMBAT SOCIAL MEDIA (SM)-BASED ALCOHOL INFLUENCE. THIS INNOVATIVE USE OF SM POSTS TO DELIVER A SNMC GAME HAS THE ADDED BENEFIT OF MEETING STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE (ON INSTAGRAM AND SNAPCHAT) AND IS LESS RESOURCE-INTENSIVE THAN IN-PERSON, ONLINE, AND APP-BASED NORMS INTERVENTION STRATEGIES. ADDITIONALLY, THIS PROJECT WILL UTILIZE TARGETED ADS, WHICH ARE PAID VERSIONS OF POSTS, TO INNOVATIVELY ADDRESSES SEVERAL LIMITATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH TRADITIONAL SNMCS, SUCH AS AN INABILITY TO CONDUCT RCTS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE CAMPAIGNS WITHIN A CAMPUS AND A RELIANCE ON SELF-REPORT TO ASSESS EXPOSURE TO THE CAMPAIGN. THE PROPOSED PROJECT HAS TWO PHASES: (1) DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAMIFIED SNMC, 2 COLLEGE TRUTHS & 1 LIE (2T1L) (PHASE 1), AND (2) A HYBRID FEASIBILITY AND EFFICACY PILOT RCT (PHASE 2). 2T1L INVOLVES PARTICIPANTS IDENTIFYING AN INCORRECT NORM FROM A LIST OF THREE “FACTS” ABOUT FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS; THE GAME THEN CORRECTS THE MISPERCEIVED NORM AND REINFORCES THE CORRECTION WITH GRAPHICS. EACH ROUND WILL INCLUDE RISK-REDUCING ALCOHOL NORMS, EITHER AS TRUTHS OR LIES. 2T1L ALSO INCLUDED FEATURES LIKE POINTS AND LEADERBOARDS THAT INCREASE INTEREST, ENGAGEMENT, AND BELIEVABILITY, ESPECIALLY AMONG HEAVY DRINKERS WHO TEND TO BE REACTIVE TO NORMS RE-EDUCATION. PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH METHODS WILL ALSO BE EMPLOYED TO PRODUCE 2T1L TO MAXIMIZE APPEAL AND RELEVANCE TO FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS. IN YEAR 1, WE WILL CONDUCT A NORMS DOCUMENTATION SURVEY (N=400) TO DETERMINE GAME NORMS (AIM 1A), AND FOCUS GROUPS (N=50) TO IDENTIFY GAME AESTHETICS PREFERRED BY FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS (AIM 1B). IN THE BEGINNING OF YEAR 2, WE WILL CONDUCT A SECOND SET OF FOCUS GROUPS (N=50) TO TEST THE 2T1L GAME AND RECEIVE FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE USER EXPERIENCE OF 2T1L PRIOR TO LAUNCH (AIM 1C). PHASE 1 WILL CULMINATE IN A FINALIZED VERSION OF THE 2T1L SNMC TO BE EVALUATED BY A HYBRID FEASIBILITY AND EFFICACY PILOT RCT (N=414) IN PHASE 2. SHORT- AND LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF THE 2T1L SNMC ON REACTANCE, NORMS, AND DRINKING OUTCOMES WILL BE EXAMINED AND FINDINGS WILL BE USED TO INFORM THE NEED FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION OF THIS PROGRAM IN A LARGE MULTI-SITE RCT.

DIGITALLY PROMPTED PARENTING: A TEXT MESSAGE PARENT-BASED ALCOHOL INTERVENTION FOR INCOMING COLLEGE STUDENTS - PROJECT SUMMARY DRINKING REMAINS A SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES WITH THE TRANSITION INTO AND FIRST MONTHS OF COLLEGE IDENTIFIED BY NIAAA AS A CRITICAL HIGH-RISK PERIOD. CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, PARENTS CAN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN MITIGATING ALCOHOL-RELATED RISK DURING THIS PERIOD BY MAINTAINING COMMUNICATION WITH THEIR UNDERAGE EMERGING ADULT CHILDREN AND EXPRESSING LESS PERMISSIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD ALCOHOL USE. TRIALS OF EXISTING PARENT-BASED INTERVENTIONS (PBIS) WHICH TARGET PARENTS’ COMMUNICATION AND ATTITUDES TOWARD UNDERAGE DRINKING DELIVERED DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS PRIOR TO ENTERING COLLEGE HAVE FOUND MODEST EFFECTS ON STUDENT DRINKING OUTCOMES; HOWEVER, THESE INTERVENTIONS ARE LESS EFFECTIVE WHEN FINANCIAL INCENTIVES ARE NOT PROVIDED TO PARENTS FOR PARTICIPATION. ONE EXPLANATION FOR THIS IS THAT TIME AND EFFORT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THESE PROGRAMS PRE-MATRICULATION MAY BE TOO DEMANDING. A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT REQUIRED FROM PARENTS’ PRE-MATRICULATION AND PROVIDE THEM WITH SIMPLER TASKS THAT COULD BE COMPLETED THROUGHOUT THE FIRST SEMESTER, SUCH AS SENDING THEIR STUDENT RISK-REDUCING TEXT MESSAGES. FINDINGS FROM OUR LAB INDICATE THAT MAINTAINING COMMUNICATION DURING THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF COLLEGE VIA TEXT MESSAGE CAN HELP TO PREVENT INCREASES IN ALCOHOL USE AND CONSEQUENCES THROUGHOUT THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE. OUR PRELIMINARY PILOT WORK ALSO SUGGESTS THAT THERE COULD BE BENEFITS TO DELIVERING TEXT MESSAGES FROM PARENTS TO STUDENTS STRESSING LESS PERMISSIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD DRINKING ON THE NIGHTS WHEN STUDENTS ARE GOING OUT, AND HAVING PARENTS ASK STUDENTS TO CHECK-IN AT THE END OF THE NIGHT MIGHT REDUCE DRINKING EVEN MORE. GIVEN THESE FINDINGS, THIS PROPOSAL ADDRESSES LIMITATIONS WITH EXISTING PBIS BY DEVELOPING THE FIRST TEXT MESSAGE PBI (TM-PBI) THAT WILL DELIVER CAREFULLY TIMED, BRIEF, TAILORED TEXT MESSAGES TO PARENTS PROMPTING THEM TO SEND RISK-REDUCING TEXT MESSAGES TO THEIR CHILD THAT ARE INFORMED BY THEORY, LITERATURE, AND PARENT FEEDBACK. IN PHASE 1, WE WILL DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND OPTIMIZE THE TM-PBI, DIGITALLY PROMPTED PARENTING (DPP) (AIM 1). DPP INCLUDES A WEB PLATFORM THAT INCLUDES FEATURES SUCH AS EMBEDDED VIDEOS AND SURVEYS, PROFILE MANAGEMENT, AND AN INTERACTIVE CALENDAR MODULE. MORE IMPORTANT, THE PLATFORM PERMITS THE RESEARCH TEAM TO EDIT, AUTOMATE AND TRACK THE DELIVERY OF TAILORED TEXT PROMPTS BASED ON INFORMATION PROVIDED BY PARENTS ON THE PLATFORM (STUDENT SEX, PARENT SEX, RACE/ETHNICITY, AND PARENT ATTITUDES TOWARD DRINKING). PHASE 1 WILL ALSO INCLUDE FOCUS GROUPS WITH PARENTS OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AIMED AT IDENTIFYING WAYS TO TAILOR TEXT MESSAGE CONTENT (N=80). WE WILL THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE FULLY OPERABLE DPP WITH A SUBSET OF THIS SAMPLE (N=16) TO IDENTIFY AND RESOLVE ANY BUGS AFFECTING PROGRAM PERFORMANCE. IN PHASE 2, WE WILL CONDUCT A PILOT RCT WITH 300 PARENT-STUDENT DYADS TO EVALUATE SHORTER- AND LONGER-TERM EFFECTS OF DPP ON FIRST-YEAR DRINKING RELATIVE TO AN ACTIVE CONTROL CONDITION (AIM 2). FINALLY, WE WILL ASSESS THE ACCEPTABILITY/FEASIBILITY OF THE DPP PROGRAM (AIM 3) VIA ENGAGEMENT DATA WITHIN THE WEB PLATFORM AND BY SURVEYING PARENTS FROM THE DPP CONDITION (N=150), INFORMING FURTHER ITERATIONS OF THE DPP PROGRAM.

THE ROLE OF INOSINE MONOPHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE IN MRNA REGULATION: IDENTIFICATION OF MRNAS BOUND AND FUNCTIONAL CONSEQUENCES - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT INOSINE MONOPHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE (IMPDH) CATALYZES THE RATE LIMITING STEP IN GUANINE NUCLEOTIDE SYNTHESIS AND IS THUS CRITICAL FOR PROPER CELLULAR FUNCTION. INDEED, MUTATIONS IN HUMAN IMPDH (IMPDH1 AND IMPDH2) ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE DISEASES, SUCH AS AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA (ADRP). THIS ENZYME ALSO HAS AN EXCITING, UNEXPLORED FUNCTION: IT BINDS MRNA. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS TO ELUCIDATE THE FUNCTIONS AND MECHANISMS OF UNCHARACTERIZED MRNA BINDING PROTEINS TO REVEAL NEW PRINCIPLES OF GENE EXPRESSION AND INFORM RESEARCH ON HUMAN DISEASE. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE FOR THIS APPLICATION IS TO CHARACTERIZE THE ROLE OF IMPDH IN BINDING AND REGULATION OF MRNA, AND TO IDENTIFY THE IMPACT THAT ADRP CAUSING MUTATIONS HAVE ON THAT ACTIVITY. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT IMPDH BINDS TO A SELECT GROUP OF MRNAS AND REGULATES THEIR TRANSLATION. THIS HYPOTHESIS HAS BEEN FORMULATED BECAUSE: 1) YEAST IMPDH ENZYMES WERE ROBUSTLY IDENTIFIED AS MRNA BINDING PROTEINS THAT BIND TO MULTIPLE MRNAS; 2) PUBLISHED DATA DEMONSTRATED THE PRESENCE OF HUMAN IMPDH IN TRANSLATING COMPLEXES; AND 3) OUR PRELIMINARY DATA SHOWS EFFECTS ON PROTEIN LEVELS, THUS SUPPORTING A ROLE IN PROTEIN SYNTHESIS. THE RATIONALE BEHIND THIS PROPOSAL IS THAT UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN NUCLEOTIDE BIOSYNTHESIS AND GENE EXPRESSION WILL DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CENTRAL BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS AND SUPPORT NEW STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS DISEASES INCLUDING INHERITED BLINDNESS. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED BY PURSUING THREE SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) IDENTIFY MRNAS BOUND BY YEAST IMPDH ENZYMES; 2) DETERMINE HOW IMPDH REGULATES MRNA BIOLOGY; AND 3) CHARACTERIZE DISRUPTIONS TO MRNA REGULATION CAUSED BY ADRP CAUSING MUTATIONS. UNDER THE FIRST AIM, RIP-SEQ WILL BE PERFORMED ON ALL THREE OF THE YEAST IMPDH ENZYMES (IMD2, IMD3, AND IMD4) TO IDENTIFY BOUND MRNAS. FOR THE SECOND AIM, CONSEQUENCES OF IMPDH BINDING ON MRNA STABILITY AND TRANSLATION WILL BE IDENTIFIED USING NORTHERN BLOTTING AND WESTERN BLOTTING TO ANALYZE REGULATION OF BOTH A REPORTER MRNA AND ENDOGENOUS MRNA BINDING PARTNERS OF IMPDH. THE MECHANISM OF MRNA REGULATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY REPEATING THESE ASSAYS IN YEAST STRAINS DEFICIENT IN KEY REGULATORS OF TRANSLATION AND/OR MRNA DECAY. FOR THE THIRD AIM, MUTATIONS KNOWN TO CAUSE ADRP WILL BE INSERTED INTO THE YEAST GENOME AND CONSEQUENCES ON MRNA BINDING AND REGULATION WILL BE OBSERVED USING RIP-SEQ, WESTERN BLOTTING, AND NORTHERN BLOTTING. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS INNOVATIVE, IN THE APPLICANT’S OPINION, BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS A SUBSTANTIVE DEPARTURE FROM THE STATUS QUO BY FOCUSING ON IMPDH AS A REGULATOR OF MRNA FUNCTION AND INVESTIGATING THE IDENTITY OF BOUND MRNAS AS WELL AS THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS INTERACTION ON GENE EXPRESSION. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT WILL REVEAL A NEW MECHANISM OF MRNA REGULATION AND DEFINE AN UNEXPLORED FUNCTION OF THE KEY ENZYME IMPDH. THIS WORK WILL BE PERFORMED BY THE PI AND A TEAM OF EXCLUSIVELY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHERS, PROVIDING TRANSFORMATIVE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS.

THIS APPROACH DRAWS ON SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKS AND PROTEIN INTERACTION NETWORKS TO CUSTOMIZE SPECTRAL GRAPH METRICS FOR HETEROGENEOUS SOCIAL INTERACTION NETWORKS AND THEIR MULTI-LAYER KNOWLEDGE GRAPHS. SECOND, THE PROJECT AIMS TO ENHANCE THE INTERPRETABILITY OF COMMUNITY DETECTION ALGORITHMS FOR DYNAMIC SOCIAL NETWORKS. BY LEVERAGING THE ESTABLISHED EQUIVALENCE BETWEEN COMPUTING DSD AND SOLVING GRAPH LAPLACIAN SYSTEMS, ADVANCED MULTILEVEL SOLVERS WILL BE DEVELOPED USING THEORETICAL ANALYSIS TOOLS FROM DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS, DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, AND SPECTRAL THEORY IN NUMERICAL LINEAR ALGEBRA. THIS WILL PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE FRAMEWORK FOR UNDERSTANDING HOW EVOLVING STRUCTURES OF SOCIAL NETWORKS IMPACT THE EIGENSPACES OF THE DISTANCE MATRIX. THE PROJECT INCLUDES EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AND INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION, BRIDGING STEM AND SOCIAL SCIENCES TO ENSURE USER-FRIENDLY ACCESS TO THE KNOWLEDGE GRAPH FRAMEWORK AND SPECTRAL ALGORITHMS. MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY WILL ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE BY 1) RECRUITING STUDENTS INTO A NEW ENGINEERING PROGRAM THROUGH A TWO-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM AND A DUAL-ENROLLMENT ENGINEERING COURSE FOR DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOL (DCPS) STUDENTS AND 2) CREATING A YEAR-LONG INTRODUCTORY ENGINEERING COURSE USING LOW-COST MAKERSPACE TECHNOLOGIES (SUCH AS 3D PRINTERS) TO IMPROVE FOUNDATIONAL ENGINEERING SKILLS AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS IMPACTING THEIR COMMUNITY. ERI: FAULT-TOLERANT MONITORING OF MOVING CLUSTERS OF TARGETS USING COLLABORATIVE UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES -UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES, OR DRONES, HAVE SUCCESSFULLY BEEN USED TO MONITOR GROUND ACTIVITY. HOWEVER, USING SMALL DRONES FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME IS NOT YET POSSIBLE, THUS LIMITING THEIR IMPLEMENTATION. FOR INSTANCE, SMALL QUADCOPTERS THAT CAN BE EASILY TRANSPORTED AND DEPLOYED DO NOT EXCEED FORTY MINUTES OF FLYING TIME IN MOST CASES AND ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO UNEXPECTED FAILURE SUCH AS DAMAGE FROM NATURAL HAZARDS. ON THE OTHER HAND, ROBUST QUADCOPTERS CAPABLE OF LONGER FLYING TIMES HAVE LARGER DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT THAT PROHIBIT EASE OF DEPLOYMENT. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO A SINGLE ROBUST DRONE, THIS ENGINEERING RESEARCH INITIATION (ERI) AWARD WILL SUPPORT FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH TO ENABLE A NETWORK OF SMALL DRONES TO MONITOR GROUND ACTIVITY WITH THE GOAL OF UNINTERRUPTED OPERATION AND FAULT TOLERANCE BY SHARING INFORMATION WITH ONE ANOTHER INCLUDING KNOWLEDGE OF TARGETS DETECTED. A DEMONSTRATION OF THIS CONCEPT WILL BE MADE THROUGH WILDFIRE MONITORING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE US FOREST SERVICE. THIS AWARD WILL SUSTAIN RESEARCH AT A PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION. BOTH UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE RESEARCH EFFORT. THE MONITORING PROBLEM UNDER CONSIDERATION IN THIS RESEARCH IS RELATED TO THE WELL-KNOWN MULTIPLE TRAVELING SALESMAN PROBLEM AND ITS VARIANTS, NAMELY VEHICLE ROUTING PROBLEM WITH TIME WINDOW AND MULTIPLE DEPOT DRONE ROUTING PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE SOLUTION TO THESE ROUTING PROBLEMS CANNOT BE USED AS-IS BECAUSE THEY WOULD CONSIDER DRONE TOURS THAT VISIT EACH CLUSTER (REGION) ONLY ONCE, NOT PERIODICALLY. MOREOVER, THEY DO NOT CONSIDER FAULT TOLERANCE. THIS RESEARCH AIMS AT A FAULT-TOLERANT SOLUTION THAT (1) CHARACTERIZES TARGET CLUSTERS VIA DISTRIBUTED ESTIMATION OF GAUSSIAN MIXTURE MODELS, (2) COORDINATES FLIGHT FORMATIONS AND SEARCH PATHS USING GAME THEORY TO AVOID CENTRAL CONTROL, AND (3) PERFORMS POINT SET REGISTRATION OF ADJACENT IMAGES FROM DRONES TO INCREASE ACCURACY OF TARGET LOCATIONS. THE RESEARCH WILL NOT ONLY PROMOTE PROGRESS IN WILDFIRE MONITORING BUT ALSO FOR ANY OTHER NATURAL OR HUMAN ACTIVITY THAT CAN BE CHARACTERIZED WITH GAUSSIAN MIXTURE MODELS. CRII: SATC: RELIABLE HARDWARE ARCHITECTURES AGAINST SIDE-CHANNEL ATTACKS FOR POST-QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHIC ALGORITHMS -THE RAPID DEVELOPMENTS IN QUANTUM COMPUTING THREATEN THE SECURITY OF TRADITIONAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS, BECAUSE THEY USE A FORM OF ENCRYPTION CALLED PUBLIC-KEY, THAT WILL NO LONGER BE SECURE IF QUANTUM COMPUTING ADVANCES. NEW APPROACHES DEVELOPED TO AVERT THIS SECURITY PROBLEM ARE KNOWN AS POST-QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHY (PQC), AND THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY (NIST) LED A 2016 EFFORT TO STANDARDIZE QUANTUM-RESISTANT PUBLIC-KEY APPROACHES. NIST HAS RECENTLY SELECTED FOUR ALGORITHMS FOR STANDARDIZATION AND HAS CHOSEN THREE OTHER ALGORITHMS AS POTENTIAL CANDIDATES. HOWEVER, THESE ALGORITHMS ARE NOT WITHOUT VULNERABILITIES, AND THE MAJORITY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BOTH CERTAIN TYPES OF CYBER ATTACKS AND ENVIRONMENTALLY INDUCED FAULTS. SUCH VULNERABILITIES CAN LEAD TO UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO SENSITIVE INFORMATION AND SYSTEM FAILURE. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO PERFORM A RIGOROUS EVALUATION OF THE PQC ALGORITHMS AND TO DESIGN, SIMULATE, AND IMPLEMENT TAILORED COUNTERMEASURES AGAINST THESE THREATS. THIS CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO GRADUATE-LEVEL COURSES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF PQC BY PERFORMING A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF EXISTING ALGORITHMS, IDENTIFYING VULNERABILITIES TO SCAS, AND FORMULATING COUNTERMEASURES AGAINST SUCH ATTACKS AND ENVIRONMENTALLY INDUCED FAULTS. DUE TO THE COMPLEX NATURE OF DERIVING SUCH TECHNIQUES, SOFTWARE SIMULATIONS WILL NEED TO BE DONE TO VERIFY THESE MATHEMATICAL DERIVATIONS. ALTHOUGH MANY SCHEDULING ALGORITHMS EXIST, IT IS NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD HOW THEY PERFORM ACROSS DIFFERENT TYPES OF REAL-WORLD SCENARIOS, OR IN WHICH KINDS OF SCENARIOS THEY MAY PERFORM POORLY. THIS WORK BUILDS UPON AN OPEN-SOURCE FRAMEWORK TO DESIGN, EVALUATE, AND COMPARE SCHEDULING ALGORITHMS UNDER REALISTIC CONDITIONS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR CAPABILITIES. WITH THIS RESULTING INSIGHT, THE WORK EXPLORES NEW TASK SCHEDULING APPROACHES THAT LEVERAGE THE STRENGTHS OF PRIOR APPROACHES AND EMPLOYS MACHINE LEARNING TO ENABLE INTELLIGENT SCHEDULING. THE PROJECT PROVIDES HANDS-ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AT A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, STRENGTHENING THE PIPELINE OF FUTURE COMPUTING RESEARCHERS AND HELPING ADDRESS NATIONAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT NEEDS. THE PROJECT INTRODUCES METHODS FOR AUTOMATICALLY DESIGNING HYBRID SCHEDULING ALGORITHMS BY IDENTIFYING AND COMBINING THE STRENGTHS OF EXISTING ONES USING ADVERSARIAL ANALYSIS. IT ALSO EXPLORES HOW ADVERSARIALLY GENERATED PROBLEM INSTANCES CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE THE TRAINING OF MACHINE LEARNING-BASED SCHEDULERS BY ENRICHING THEIR TRAINING DATA WITH INFORMATIVE, DIVERSE EXAMPLES. BY PROVIDING STANDARDIZED TOOLS AND METHODOLOGIES, THIS WORK PROMOTES REPRODUCIBILITY, ENCOURAGES INNOVATION, AND EMPOWERS A BROAD RANGE OF RESEARCHERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND IMPROVE TASK SCHEDULING IN HETEROGENEOUS DISTRIBUTED ENVIRONMENTS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF RELIGION-STATE RELATIONSHIPS -THE DAY-TO-DAY MANAGEMENT OF INTERACTION BETWEEN RELIGION AND GOVERNMENT FALLS TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF LOCAL OFFICIALS, WHO ARE ENTRUSTED WITH DECISIONS THAT IMPACT ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS. THIS MIXED-METHODS, NATIONWIDE STUDY OF LOCAL OFFICIALS INVESTIGATES HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, ACROSS DIVERSE COMMUNITIES, UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE RELIGION-STATE RELATIONS. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO HELP THE PUBLIC UNDERSTAND HOW LOCAL OFFICIALS CAN SUPPORT PLURALISM AND RESOLVE CONFLICTS IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THE PROJECT PRODUCES A PUBLIC-USE DATASET AND TRADE BOOK, AND IT SUPPORTS THE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES IN SCIENCE. THIS STUDY ADDRESSES THE INTERACTION OF RELIGION AND GOVERNMENT THROUGH A LARGE-SCALE SURVEY AND IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS. THE SURVEY IS OF 2500 LOCAL OFFICIALS, BOTH ELECTED AND APPOINTED, ASKING ABOUT THEIR ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS REGARDING RELIGION, THE STATE, AND INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TWO. THE SURVEY IS NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE OF OFFICIALS ACROSS THREE FORMS OF GOVERNMENT (MUNICIPALITIES, COUNTIES, AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS) AND FIVE GOVERNANCE DOMAINS (ADMINISTRATION, POLICING, PUBLIC HEALTH, ZONING, AND EDUCATION). THE PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH 150 LOCAL OFFICIALS SAMPLED FROM THE SURVEY BASED ON THEIR (NON)RELIGIOSITY AND LOCAL CONTEXT. THE QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA ARE MERGED AND ANALYZED, RESULTING IN A METHODOLOGICAL REPORT, A PUBLIC-USE DATASET, AND RESEARCH FINDINGS. THE STUDY PROVIDES THE FIRST EMPIRICAL PORTRAIT OF LOCAL OFFICIALS? INTERACTIONS WITH AND PREFERENCES ABOUT RELIGION, AND IT EXAMINES HOW THOSE RELIGION-STATE PREFERENCES ARE PATTERNED BY KEY INDIVIDUAL FACTORS (BELIEFS, AFFILIATIONS, BACKGROUND) AND CONTEXTS (REGION, MUNICIPAL SIZE, LOCAL DEMOGRAPHY). ULTIMATELY, THE RESEARCH DEMONSTRATES HOW GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, WHO OFTEN HAVE AMPLE DISCRETION BUT LIMITED FORMAL GUIDANCE WHEN IT COMES TO RELIGION, MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT HOW TO NAVIGATE AND MANAGE RELIGIOUS QUESTIONS AND RESOLVE POTENTIAL CONFLICTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

AS NEW AI TOOLS ARE DEVELOPED TO ASSIST IN LANGUAGE LEARNING, TRANSLATION, AND RELATED TASKS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THESE TECHNOLOGIES ARE OPTIMALLY DEPLOYED AND INFORMED BY PEOPLE WHO SPEAK THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGES IN QUESTION. WITH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, THIS EFFORT LAYS THE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION NEEDED TO EXPLORE HOW AI CAN WORK IN LOW-DATA, LINGUISTICALLY COMPLEX SETTINGS. THROUGH A THREE-DAY WORKSHOP, PARTICIPANTS SHARE EXPERIENCES, LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER, AND CREATE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT ADVANCE RIGOROUS AI RESEARCH. OTHER BENEFITS TO SOCIETY INCLUDE ENSURING THAT EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES OPEN NEW DIRECTIONS FOR CUTTING-EDGE AI RESEARCH AND STRENGTHEN TRANSLATIONAL APPLICATIONS, INCLUDING LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND REVITALIZATION. THE PROJECT CONVENES A NATIONAL, INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP FOCUSED ON AI PRACTICES IN LOW-DATA LANGUAGE CONTEXTS. IT ADDRESSES AN URGENT GAP AT THE INTERSECTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, LANGUAGE SCIENCES, AND LANGUAGE DOCUMENTATION BY CONNECTING PRACTITIONERS WITH RESEARCHERS IN LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES. THROUGH INVITED TALKS, PANELS, AND BREAKOUT SESSIONS, THE EVENT IDENTIFIES PROMISING PRACTICES AND POTENTIAL CONCERNS, AND PRODUCES GUIDANCE ON AI DEVELOPMENT. THE WORKSHOP SUPPORTS STRATEGIC GOALS IN AI BY ADVANCING METHODS FOR HUMAN-AI COLLABORATION, LOW-RESOURCE MODEL ADAPTATION, AND LINGUISTICALLY GROUNDED EVALUATION IN COMPLEX DOMAINS. COMPLEMENTARY INTEGRATIVE REHABILITATION MEDICINE: CULTIVATING DIVERSITY IN RESEARCH AND CLINICAL PRACTICE - ABSTRACT THIS NIH NCCIH R13 CONFERENCE GRANT, "DIVERSITY MENTORING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN COMPLEMENTARY AND INTEGRATIVE REHABILITATION MEDICINE WORKSHOP (DMCD CIRM)," AIMS TO CONDUCT A PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP AT THE 2024 AMERICAN CONGRESS OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE (ACRM) ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING IN DALLAS, TEXAS. ITS PRIMARY GOAL IS TO INCREASE THE PRESENCE OF UNDERREPRESENTED SCIENTISTS IN THE COMPLEMENTARY AND INTEGRATIVE REHABILITATION MEDICINE (CIRM) WORKFORCE AND TO PROVIDE SELECTED UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY (URM) DMCD CIRM FELLOWS WITH MENTORING, NETWORKING, AND SPECIALIZED RESEARCH SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN CIRM. TARGETING EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONALS, THE WORKSHOP INCLUDES 3.5 DAYS OF INNOVATIVE CIRM RESEARCH TRAINING AT THE ACRM CONFERENCE. RECOGNIZING DIVERSITY'S ESSENTIAL ROLE IN ADVANCING CLINICAL PRACTICE AND RESEARCH OUTCOMES, THE DMCD CIRM WORKSHOP ADDRESSES THE PERSISTENT UNDERREPRESENTATION IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES DESPITE EXISTING DIVERSITY INITIATIVES.
