DEVELOPING STEM IDENTITY THROUGH HOLISTIC STUDENT SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT GUILFORD COLLEGE. GUILFORD COLLEGE IS A COEDUCATIONAL, LIBERAL ARTS INSTITUTION LOCATED IN GREENSBORO, NC AND THE ONLY QUAKER-FOUNDED COLLEGE IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES. OVER ITS 5-YEAR DURATION, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS OF UP TO FOUR YEARS TO 10 FULL-TIME STUDENTS WHO ARE PURSUING BACHELOR?S DEGREES IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, OR COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CTIS). THE PROJECT AIMS TO INCREASE STUDENT PERSISTENCE IN STEM FIELDS BY LINKING SCHOLARSHIPS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN A BREADTH OF OPPORTUNITIES: PEER AND FACULTY MENTORING; UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES; AN INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR EXPERIENCE; ALUMNI SPEAKERS; INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES; PARTICIPATION IN DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC CONFERENCES; AND EXPLORING PATHWAYS TO GRADUATE SCHOOL. THE PROJECT'S FINANCIAL AND WRAP-AROUND COHORT RESOURCES WILL PROVIDE SCHOLARS WITH THE OPPORTUNITIES, COMMUNITY, MOTIVATION, AND SKILLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR STEM STUDIES AND CAREERS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF LOW-INCOME, HIGH-ACHIEVING UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THERE ARE FOUR SPECIFIC AIMS: (1) RECRUIT 10 LOW-INCOME, FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS PLANNING TO MAJOR IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, AND CTIS AND WHO HAVE HIGH ACADEMIC POTENTIAL AND UNMET FINANCIAL NEED INTO TWO COHORTS OF 5, (2) RETAIN AT LEAST 80% OF SCHOLARS INTO THEIR SECOND YEAR; (3) GRADUATE AT LEAST 75% OF SCHOLARS WITHIN FIVE YEARS OF MATRICULATION; AND (4) YIELD 100% OF SCHOLAR GRADUATES SECURING STEM EMPLOYMENT OR GRADUATE SCHOOL PLACEMENT WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF GRADUATION. THE EXTERNAL EVALUATION OF THE PROPOSED EFFORT IS AIMED AT DEEPENING UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT PROPOSED STUDENT SUPPORTS, WHEN PAIRED WITH SCHOLARSHIPS, CAN MAKE TO A LIBERAL ARTS INSTITUTION?S GOALS OF INCREASED RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF LOW-INCOME STEM STUDENTS. KNOWLEDGE GENERATED WILL BE WIDELY DISSEMINATED THROUGH CONFERENCES, PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS, STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND PAPERS, INSTITUTIONAL MEDIA, WEBINARS, WEBSITES, AND OTHER FORUMS TO INSPIRE AND SHARE LESSONS LEARNED. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF?S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: EPIIC: SUPPORTING PARTNERSHIPS FOR ADVANCEMENT, RESEARCH, AND KNOWLEDGE (SPARK) -SUPPORTING PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCEMENT, RESEARCH, AND KNOWLEDGE (SPARK) IS A JOINT EFFORT OF FOUR GEOGRAPHICALLY DIVERSE AND PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS (PUIS). EACH SPARK INSTITUTION SEEKS TO OVERCOME ITS UNIQUE CHALLENGES BY DEVELOPING THE CAPACITY TO FACILITATE INNOVATION AND KNOWLEDGE CREATION BY BUILDING AND SUSTAINING PARTNERSHIPS WITH INDUSTRY AND INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS IN ITS REGION. THESE EFFORTS WILL ALSO PAVE THE WAY FOR EACH INSTITUTION TO DEVELOP INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS POLICIES AND CONSTRUCT PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENTS WHILE ALSO POSITIONING ITSELF MORE FAVORABLY THAN HERETOFORE TO PURSUE EXTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES. WORKING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY, THE SPARK COHORT WILL FOCUS ON FOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES. FIRST, EACH INSTITUTION WILL IMPROVE HOW IT SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS BY IDENTIFYING AND FIXING AREAS WHERE POLICIES OR PROCESSES ARE LACKING OR ARE NOT HELPFUL. SECOND, EACH WILL PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INCENTIVES FOR FACULTY AND STAFF TO EXPAND THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN USE-INSPIRED RESEARCH AND INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING. THIRD, EACH WILL BUILD STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL INDUSTRIES AND INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS WITH THE HELP OF DEDICATED LIAISONS OR INDIVIDUALS ADEPT AT BUILDING RELATIONAL ASSETS TO FUNCTION AS CATALYSTS OF THIS EFFORT. FINALLY, EACH WILL CREATE A CENTER OR HUB DESIGNED TO SUSTAIN THE EFFORTS ACHIEVED BY THE COHORT EVEN AFTER THE COHORT CEASES TO EXIST. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO ESTABLISH MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO COMBAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING ON CAMPUSES. THE CAMPUS PROGRAM SUPPORTS ACTIVITIES THAT DEVELOP CAMPUS-BASED COORDINATED RESPONSES AMONG CAMPUS VICTIM SERVICES, CAMPUS LAW ENFORCEMENT, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, HOUSING OFFICIALS, ADMINISTRATORS, STUDENT LEADERS, FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND DISCIPLINARY BOARDS, AND ENHANCE VICTIM SAFETY AND ASSISTANCE AND HOLD OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE. TO BE EFFECTIVE, THESE RESPONSES MUST BE LINKED TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, PROSECUTORS OFFICES, COURTS, AND NONPROFIT, NONGOVERNMENTAL VICTIM ADVOCACY AND VICTIM SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS. GUILFORD COLLEGE IS A PRIVATE, FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTION LOCATED IN GREENSBORO, NC. WITH THIS NEW AWARD, GUILFORD COLLEGE, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FAMILY SERVICES OF THE PIEDMONT, INC. THIS PROJECT AT GUILFORD COLLEGE INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS, INCLUDING GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS AND SOUTH DAVIDSON HIGH SCHOOL, AS WELL AS HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS WITH STEM MAT PROGRAMS, INCLUDING CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND MARYVILLE COLLEGE. PROJECT GOALS INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR A STEM MAT LICENSURE PROGRAM TARGETING STUDENTS WITH UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES IN BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY. A MAT TASK FORCE WILL BE ESTABLISHED, COMPOSING GUILFORD FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATORS, LOCAL EDUCATION AGENCY (LEA) PARTNERS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS TO PROVIDE INPUT INTO THE PROJECT.
