SENIOR RESOURCES OF GUILFORD IS A STRATEGIC PARTNER OF BOTH THE UNITED WAY OF GREATER GREENSBORO AND THE UNITED WAY OF GREATER HIGH POINT. THE AGENCY'S MISSION IS TO SERVE OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF SENIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES BY ADVOCATING AND PROVIDING SUPPORTIVE SERVICES THAT ENHANCE THE INDEPENDENCE, HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE FOR SENIORS. THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM IN GUILFORD COUNTY IS REQUESTING A CNCS GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $253,970 FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2019-2020 (YEAR 1 OF 3) WHICH WILL FUND 55 UNDUPLICATED FEDERAL VOLUNTEER SERVICE YEARS (VSYS). THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $253,970 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $42,627 IN NON-FEDERAL RESOURCES. THE REQUIRED NON-FEDERAL PORTION WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE UNITED WAYS OF GREATER GREENSBORO AND GREATER HIGH POINT AS WELL AS OTHER LOCAL SOURCES AND WILL FUND SEVEN (7) ADDITIONAL VSYS. SENIOR RESOURCES WILL UTILIZE A MINIMUM OF 62 (50 FGP VOLUNTEERS IN GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS AND 12 FGP VOLUNTEERS IN HEAD START CENTERS) UNDUPLICATED FOSTER GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS TO EXPEND THE 62 VSYS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROJECT. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THE FOSTER GRANDPARENTS WILL BE EDUCATION (READING) FOR THE PROJECT PERIOD 7/1/2019-6/30/2022. THE CHILDREN'S READING FOUNDATION (SERVING YOUNG READERS SINCE 1996) RESEARCH REPORTS THAT THE RETURNS ON INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION ARE HIGHEST FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF SCHOOLING WHEN CHILDREN ARE FIRST LEARNING TO READ. THE EARLY YEARS SET THE STAGE FOR LATER LEARNING AND WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO READ, EXCELLENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND IS UNATTAINABLE. 100% OF THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS WILL BE PLACED IN OUTCOME ASSIGNMENTS AND PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING ASSISTANCE FOR A TOTAL OF 416 UNDUPLICATED STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THEIR TEACHER/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR AS HAVING EXCEPTIONAL AND/OR SPECIAL NEEDS IN READING AND READING COMPREHENSION OVER THE THREE-YEAR GRANT PERIOD. EACH FOSTER GRANDPARENT WILL BE ASSIGNED A MINIMUM OF 3 STUDENTS TO TUTOR EACH ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR AND COMMIT TO VOLUNTEERING A MINIMUM OF 20 HOURS PER WEEK WHILE SCHOOL IS IN SESSION.
