LIVES CENTER(BLC) IS A STATE-OF-ART LEARNING THAT CENTERS MILITARY FAMILIES, FORMER FOSTER CARE, FORMERLY INCARCERATED, AND ADULT LEARNERS. THE MISSION OF THE B.E.S.T. LIVES CENTER IS TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE AND TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES THAT WILL POSITIVELY ENHANCE LIFE CHANCES FOR CAPABLE ADULT LEARNERS. ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL INTRODUCE AND REINTRODUCE VULNERABLE SOUTH CAROLINIANS TO THE ROBUST, STATE-CENTRIC, CUSTOMIZABLE, AND CONNECTED WORKFORCE SUPPORT SYSTEM. THE BLC WILL ADDRESS ONGOING CONCERNS REGARDING EDUCATIONAL ACCESS, INNOVATION, EQUITY, CONNECTIVITY, SOCIAL MOBILITY, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, AND EMPLOYMENT. THIS CENTER WILL MANAGE AND TRACK STUDENTS WHO ENTER THE COLLEGE WITH SIMILAR BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS AND WILL LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF THE PATHWAY THEY TOOK INTO THE COLLEGE. EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH: REAL-TIME MONITORING AND STRUCTURAL VALIDATION FOR CONTINUOUS FIBER PRINTING -CONTINUOUS FIBER PRINTING IS AN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE THAT PLACES CONTINUOUS FIBERS INSIDE THE POLYMER MATRIX OF 3D-PRINTED PARTS, CREATING STRONGER AND LIGHTER COMPONENTS THAN THOSE PRINTED USING TRADITIONAL POLYMER-ONLY METHODS. HOWEVER, ENSURING THE QUALITY OF THESE PARTS IS CHALLENGING. PROBLEMS SUCH AS FIBER MISALIGNMENT AND LAYER SEPARATION CAN WEAKEN THE STRUCTURE. THIS PROJECT DEVELOPS A REAL-TIME MONITORING SYSTEM THAT USES OPTICAL CAMERAS, THERMAL IMAGING SENSORS, AND ACOUSTIC EMISSION SENSORS TO MONITOR THE PRINTING PROCESS. BY DETECTING DEFECTS EARLY, THE SYSTEM CAN STOP THE PRODUCTION OF DEFECTIVE PARTS, REDUCE MATERIAL WASTE, AND ENSURE THAT PRINTED COMPONENTS MEET DESIGN REQUIREMENTS AND ARE READY FOR IMMEDIATE USE. THE PROJECT IS ORGANIZED INTO THREE TASKS. FIRST, MODELING TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED OFFLINE TO DETERMINE HOW DIFFERENT DEFECTS AFFECT PRINTED PARTS' STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE. SECOND, MULTI-MODAL SENSOR DATA, INCLUDING STEREO IMAGING, THERMAL PROFILES, AND ACOUSTIC SIGNALS, WILL BE PROCESSED USING DEEP LEARNING MODELS TO SEGMENT SURFACE ANOMALIES. STATISTICAL METHODS WILL BE USED TO REDUCE DATA DIMENSIONALITY, WHILE TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS WILL CHARACTERIZE THE STRUCTURE OF THE GLOBAL DATA TO IDENTIFY PATTERNS. THIRD, REAL-TIME DECISION-MAKING ALGORITHMS WILL COMBINE THESE STRUCTURE-INFORMED FEATURES TO EVALUATE THE INTEGRITY OF PRINTED PARTS DURING MANUFACTURING. EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH: SECURING MACHINE LEARNING AGAINST ADVERSARIAL ATTACKS FOR CONNECTED AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES -THIS RESEARCH IS MOTIVATED BY THE NEED TO BOOST U.S. COMPETITIVENESS AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF YOUNG PEOPLE WITH AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE SAFETY, SECURITY, AND DEPENDABILITY OF INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS BY ACCELERATING THE ADOPTION OF THREAT IDENTIFICATION AND ATTACK-RESISTANT CONTROL COUNTERMEASURES. FUTURE CYBERATTACKS ON CONNECTED AND AUTOMATED VEHICLES WILL NECESSITATE THE STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL COUNTERMEASURES TO INCREASE MARKET ACCEPTANCE OF THESE VEHICLE TECHNOLOGIES, WHICH COULD IMPROVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, VEHICLE AND PERSONAL SAFETY, AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY. THIS AWARD WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN MODELING, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, AND COMMUNICATION TO ADDRESS CYBERSECURITY ISSUES IN CONNECTED AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES. THE PRIME OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO CREATE A DEFENSE TECHNIQUE THAT WILL ENABLE CONNECTED AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES TO BE MORE RESISTANT TO ADVERSARIAL ATTACKS AND HENCE CAPABLE OF MEETING MORE STRINGENT SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS. ANOTHER KEY FOCUS IS TO INVOLVE TEAMS OF UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN CREATIVE INQUIRY AND DESIGN PROJECTS BASED ON HANDS-ON DEMO PLATFORMS. THIS RESEARCH FOCUSES ESPECIALLY ON ENHANCING THE RESILIENCE OF CONNECTED AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF ADVERSARIAL ATTACKS AIMED AT AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PERCEPTION MODULE, THEREBY IMPROVING VEHICLE RELIABILITY AND FUNCTIONAL SAFETY BEYOND CURRENTLY ADOPTED PRACTICES. IN ADDITION, THE AWARD HAS LARGER THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS IN THE FIELDS OF SECURITY, MACHINE LEARNING, FILTERING, AND OPTIMIZATION, ULTIMATELY EXPEDITING THE DEPLOYMENT OF CONNECTED AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES. RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN CONNECTED AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES REVEAL THAT SEVERAL COMPANIES ARE INVESTING SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERCEPTION MODULES BASED ON MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS. HOWEVER, THESE MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS ARE VULNERABLE TO ADVERSARIAL ATTACKS DESIGNED TO MISLEAD THE INPUT OF THE DEEP NEURAL NETWORK TO INDUCE A MISCLASSIFICATION, WHICH MAY UNDERMINE VEHICLE DECISION-MAKING AND, THEREFORE, FUNCTIONAL SAFETY. THROUGH WIRELESS ETHERNET CONNECTIVITY, ATTACKERS MAY COMPROMISE THE IN-VEHICLE COMPUTER PLATFORM AND OBTAIN ACCESS TO THE SENSOR DATA STORED IN MEMORY. BEFORE THE PERCEPTION MODULE, ADVERSARIAL INPUTS MAY BE INTRODUCED TO SUPPLANT THE ORIGINAL NORMAL INPUTS AND DESTABILIZE VEHICLE OPERATIONS. THE OVERALL FRAMEWORK COMPRISES MODELING POTENTIAL ADVERSARIAL THREATS IMPACTING THE PERCEPTION AND FUSION PROCESS AND DESIGNING BOTH REACTIVE AND PROACTIVE COUNTERMEASURES FOR THE SECURE AND RELIABLE FUNCTIONING OF THE SYSTEM. THIS TECHNIQUE IS MODULAR AND CAN BE DEPLOYED TO A RANGE OF DEEP NEURAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS SUCH AS ROBOTICS, BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION, AND SPEECH RECOGNITION. INCORPORATING ROBUSTNESS MEASURES DURING THE TRAINING PHASE WILL YIELD A MORE RESILIENT DEEP NEURAL NETWORK. MOREOVER, FILTERING AT SEVERAL STAGES OF THE PERCEPTRON PROCESS CAN BE USED TO DEVELOP A SYSTEM THAT CAN INNATELY TOLERATE A GREATER SPECTRUM OF ATTACKS. THE PROJECT TASKS AIM AT CONDUCTING FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH ON A PLAN THAT INCLUDES ADVERSARIAL ATTACK MODELING FOR SINGLE AND FUSED SENSOR DATA, NOVEL DATA FILTERING ALGORITHMS FOR DETECTING VARIOUS WHITE-BOX AND BLACK-BOX ATTACKS, REVISED DEEP NEURAL NETWORK TRAINING BASED ON ROBUSTNESS/SENSITIVITY TRADEOFF IN OPTIMIZATION MODELS, EVALUATION OF THE IMPACT OF SENSOR FUSION, AND TESTING THE FRAMEWORK ON F1/10 CARS AND AUTONOMOUS GOLF CARS. TARGETING CELL FUSION AS A NOVEL STRATEGY TO TACKLE JQ1 RESISTANCE IN TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER - TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER (TNBC) REMAINS AN AGGRESSIVE DISEASE DUE TO THE LACK OF TARGETED THERAPIES AND LOW RATE OF RESPONSE TO CHEMOTHERAPY THAT IS CURRENTLY THE MAIN TREATMENT MODALITY. COMPARED TO OTHER TYPES OF BREAST CANCER, TNBC TUMOR CONSISTS OF MORE IMMUNE CELLS IN TUMOR MASS. RECENTLY INHIBITORS OF BROMODOMAIN (BRD) PROTEINS SHOWED VERY PROMISING RESULTS IN TREATMENT OF CANCER INCLUDING TNBC. FOR EXAMPLE, JQ1 AS A SPECIFIC INHIBITOR OF BRD4 BLOCKS THE GROWTH OF TNBC CELLS. HOWEVER, JQ1 DEVELOPED RESISTANCE IN TNBC. IN ADDITION, ONLY TUMOR CELLS WERE TESTED FOR JQ1 RESISTANCE, RAISING A CONCERN OF REAL RECAPITULATION OF THE DISEASE IN THIS MODEL. THEREFORE, TO FULLY EXPLOIT THE THERAPEUTIC BENEFIT OF JQ1, IT IS NECESSARY TO FURTHER EXPLORE THE MECHANISMS OF JQ1-INDUCED RESISTANCE IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN TNBC CELLS AND IMMUNE CELLS. IN OUR PRELIMINARY STUDIES, WE FOUND THAT JQ1 TREATMENT INCREASED CELL FUSION BETWEEN TNBC CELLS AND ONE TYPE OF IMMUNE CELLS NAMED MONOCYTES. THIS PROCESS WAS LIKELY MEDIATED BY INHIBITING A MEDIATOR PROTEIN IN CELL FUSION NAMED MAJOR FACILITATOR SUPERFAMILY DOMAIN CONTAINING 2 (MFSD2). INTERESTINGLY THE FUSION CELLS RESEMBLE BREAST CANCER STEM CELLS (BCSCS), THE SEED OF BREAST CANCER AND CRITICAL TO CHEMORESISTANCE IN TNBC. THESE FINDINGS LED US HYPOTHESIZE THAT TARGETING MFSD2-MEDIATED CELL FUSION MAY BE A NOVEL STRATEGY TO PREVENT JQ1- MEDIATED DRUG RESISTANCE IN TNBC. TO TEST OUR HYPOTHESIS, WE HAVE DESIGNED THE FOLLOWING THREE SPECIFIC AIMS. IN AIM 1, WE WILL EXAMINE WHETHER JQ1 PROMOTES CELL FUSION THROUGH INHIBITION OF MFSD2 IN MONOCYTES. IN AIM 2, WE WILL EXAMINE WHETHER MFSD2 MEDIATES JQ1-INDUCED PHENOTYPICAL CHANGES OF BCSCS IN VITRO AND IN VIVO. IN AIM 3, WE WILL EXAMINE WHETHER JQ1 PROMOTES CELL FUSION THROUGH BRD4-DEPENDENT AND BRD4-INDEPENDENT MANNERS BY LARGE SCALE SEQUENCING TECHNIQUES INCLUDING CHIP-SEQ AND RNA-SEQ. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT WILL LEAD TO FUTURE IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIFIC MFSD2 ACTIVATORS AS DRUG CANDIDATES TO PREVENT JQ1 RESISTANCE IN TNBC. IN ADDITION, THE PROPOSAL WILL BE A GREAT VEHICLE FOR TRAINING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT BENEDICT COLLEGE IN CANCER RESEARCH USING BIOINFORMATICS AND OTHER TECHNIQUES IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY.

THIS WILL ENABLE INSTITUTIONS TO AGGREGATE MORE RESOURCES IN THE ECOSYSTEM, DEVELOP INNOVATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDENTS, AND STRENGTHEN THE COMPETITIVENESS AND VIABILITY OF THE INSTITUTION. THIS PROJECT HAS FIVE GOALS: 1) INCREASE FACULTY ENGAGEMENT WITH SPONSORED PROJECTS, 2) INCREASE PARTNER ENGAGEMENT IN SPONSORED PROJECTS, 3) INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN RESEARCH & ENTREPRENEURSHIP, 4) INCREASE CAPACITY OF SPONSORED PROJECTS OFFICE, AND 5) DEVELOP A TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROCESS. TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS, THE COHORT WILL TAKE AN ECOSYSTEM-BUILDING APPROACH IN IMPLEMENTATION AND A SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY IN DEVELOPMENT. THE INDIVIDUAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE COHORT HAVE COMBINED THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF HIGHER-EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM-BUILDING TO INFORM THEIR STRATEGY ON GROWING A COMMUNITY OF INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT EACH PARTICIPATING INSTITUTION. IN DEVELOPMENT, THE PROJECT WILL EXPERIMENTALLY DEVELOP AND TEST SOLUTIONS FROM THE THREE ORIGINAL PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS AND, ONCE CONFIRMED, SHARE DEVELOPED BEST PRACTICES WITH OTHER INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE NATION EXPERIENCING THE SAME LIMITATIONS. A MASS ADOPTION OF THE COMPLETED ECO ENGINE JUMPSTART KIT CAN AID IN CREATING A NATIONWIDE NETWORK OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND HBCU HIGHER-EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS SHARING BEST PRACTICES AND RELATIONSHIPS FOR BROADER IMPACT IN THE INNOVATIVE ECOSYSTEM. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO BRIDGE THE EMPLOYMENT GAP FOR MINORITIES IN THE FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY. UNDER THIS PROJECT, THE INITIATIVE WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN WORK-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO GAIN THE SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES FOR THE CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE. THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS, EXPOSURE,AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT BASED ON A FIVE-PART METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE PROPOSED PROJECT INCLUDES THE COORDINATION AND EXECUTION OF EVENTS THAT WILL EXPOSE, EDUCATE, AND TRAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO OBTAIN THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. THE INITIATIVE IS BASED ON A FIVE-PART METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK FOR EDUCATING AND PREPARING UNDERSERVED STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO NAVIGATE THE LANDSCAPE OF CYBERSECURITY THROUGH ACTIVITIES THAT INCLUDE WORKSHOPS, CLASS ENGAGEMENTS, CYBERSECURITY SUMMER CAMPS, CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS, AND MENTORSHIP. TRAINING MATERIALS WILL BE ALIGNED WITH NIST AND NICE STRATEGIC GOALS. THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, ASSESSMENTS AND ANALYSES WILL BE CONDUCTED TO TRACK THE PROGRESS OF THE STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE INITIATIVE.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: SUCCESS IN THE PROJECT WILL RESULT IN FOUR OUTCOMES. THE RESULTS OF THE DIFFERENT DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF K12 STUDENTS, UNDERGRADUATES, TEACHERS, STAFF, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND SURROUNDING K12 PROFESSIONALS REGARDING INFORMATION SYSTEMS SECURITY AND CYBERSECURITY. ADDITIONALLY, THE OUTCOMES INTEND TO PROVIDE TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS, PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF, AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERGRADUATES IN THE CYBERSECURITY DEGREE PROGRAM. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS ON TASKS, KNOWLEDGE, AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED IN THE CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: A WEBSITE WILL BE CREATED TO ACT AS A PRIMARY GATEWAY FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF CYBERSECURITY KNOWLEDGE AND RELATED MATERIALS CREATED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT TERM. THE PUBLIC WILL HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO CYBER RESOURCES, RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AND DATA. IN COLLABORATION WITH NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY (NCSU), BENEDICT COLLEGE (BC) SEEKS TO ENHANCE THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM AND PROVIDE ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE, HANDS-ON TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATIONS IN DATA SCIENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING FOR HBCU STUDENTS. EXAMPLES INCLUDE HYPERSONIC VEHICLES AND ACTIVE IMPACT MITIGATION STRATEGIES. THE ADVANCED OPERATION OF THESE MECHANISMS CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH CONTROL AND FEEDBACK SYSTEMS CAPABLE OF OPERATING IN THE SUB-MILLISECOND RANGE, THUS NECESSITATING TIGHT PERFORMANCE CONSTRAINTS. ADDITIONALLY, HIGH-RATE SYSTEMS ARE HIGHLY NONLINEAR AND NONSTATIONARY, FOR WHICH TRADITIONAL REAL-TIME INFERENCE METHODS ARE INCAPABLE OF PROVIDING CREDIBLE PREDICTIONS. TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS IS GAINING POPULARITY FOR CLASSIFYING COMPLEX TIME SERIES. ITS INTEGRATION WITH ARCHITECTED MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS SHOWS PROMISE IN ADVANCING THE PREDICTIVE CAPABILITIES FOR HIGH-RATE SYSTEMS. HOWEVER, TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS IS COMPUTATIONALLY EXPENSIVE AND CANNOT BE APPLIED IN THE SUB-MILLISECOND RANGE. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE REAL-TIME TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS CAPABILITIES BY DEVELOPING AND INTEGRATING ADVANCES IN MATHEMATICAL, SOFTWARE, AND HARDWARE FOUNDATIONS. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS PROJECT WILL YIELD THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS ENABLING THE INTEGRATION OF TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS WITH MACHINE LEARNING FOR MODELING AND FORECASTING TIME SERIES, CONSTITUTING A MAJOR LEAP FROM THE PURE ALGEBRAIC TOPOLOGICAL APPROACH. IT IS ENVISIONED THAT THE DEVELOPED FOUNDATIONS, ALONG WITH SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE ARTIFACTS, WILL FIND APPLICATIONS IN SUPERCOMPUTING, HIGH-SPEED DATA STORAGE, CONNECTED VEHICLES, FINANCIAL FRAUD MITIGATION, CYBER-SECURITY, DEEP-FAKE DETECTION, ACTIVE BLAST SHIELDING, AND HYPERSONIC VEHICLES. THIS PROJECT WILL BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN COMPUTING BY TRAINING MULTIPLE UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS THROUGH A WELL-STRUCTURED RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PLAN THAT LEVERAGES EXISTING PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS AT THE THREE PARTNERING UNIVERSITIES, INCLUDING AN UNDERGRADUATE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE. THIS PROJECT WILL DEMONSTRATE THAT COMPLEX NONSTATIONARY SYSTEMS CAN BE LEARNED IN REAL-TIME BY INTEGRATING MODERN MATHEMATICAL TOOLS COMBINED WITH ADVANCES IN HARDWARE, NOTABLY BY GENERATING A FIELD-PROGRAMMABLE GATE ARRAY DESIGN FOR A REAL-TIME PREDICTOR RUNNING ON THE EDGE. TO THAT END, CUSTOMIZED VARIATIONS OF TRADITIONAL TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS WILL BE DEVELOPED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE TARGETED MODELING AND FORECASTING TASKS WHILE PRODUCING COMPUTATIONALLY EFFICIENT MACHINE LEARNING REPRESENTATIONS. CONCURRENTLY, OPPORTUNITIES AND LIMITATIONS IN CONDUCTING TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS IN REAL-TIME AND IN PRODUCING A MODULAR AUTOMATED PROGRAMMER FOR HETEROGENEOUS HARDWARE WILL BE IDENTIFIED.
