THE CHILDREN'S READING FOUNDATION (SERVING YOUNG READERS SINCE 1996) RESEARCH REPORTS THAT THE RETURNS ON INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION ARE HIGHEST FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF SCHOOLING WHEN CHILDREN ARE FIRST LEARNING TO READ. THE EARLY YEARS SET THE STAGE FOR LATER LEARNING AND WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO READ, EXCELLENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND IS UNATTAINABLE. 100% OF THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS WILL BE PLACED IN OUTCOME ASSIGNMENTS AND PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING ASSISTANCE FOR A TOTAL OF 416 UNDUPLICATED STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THEIR TEACHER/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR AS HAVING EXCEPTIONAL AND/OR SPECIAL NEEDS IN READING AND READING COMPREHENSION OVER THE THREE-YEAR GRANT PERIOD. EACH FOSTER GRANDPARENT WILL BE ASSIGNED A MINIMUM OF 3 STUDENTS TO TUTOR EACH ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR AND COMMIT TO VOLUNTEERING A MINIMUM OF 20 HOURS PER WEEK WHILE SCHOOL IS IN SESSION.
