STEMTEACH: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND IMMERSIVE PROGRAM FOR THE PREPARATION AND INDUCTION OF STEM TEACHERS -THE PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL NEED OF RECRUITING AND RETAINING HIGHLY QUALIFIED MATH, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY TEACHERS. THE PROJECT INCLUDES EARLY EXPERIENCES FOR FUTURE TEACHERS IN RURAL, URBAN, AND SUBURBAN CLASSROOMS WITH TEACHER MENTORS, IMMERSIVE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES IN INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS, AND CONTINUED SUPPORT AFTER GRADUATION AS THEY TRANSITION INTO TEACHING CAREERS. THESE OPPORTUNITIES ENCOURAGE STUDENTS WITH STRONG STEM BACKGROUNDS TO EXPLORE TEACHING AS A PROFESSION AND PROVIDE THEM WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP A STRONG AWARENESS OF THE VARIED NEEDS OF THEIR FUTURE STUDENTS ALONG WITH THE TEACHING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED TO BE EFFECTIVE EDUCATORS. THIS PROJECT AT BERRY COLLEGE INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH ROME CITY SCHOOLS, FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS, AND BARTOW COUNTY SCHOOLS. PROJECT GOALS INCLUDE RECRUITING 22 UNDERGRADUATE NOYCE SCHOLARS OVER FIVE YEARS WHO WILL PURSUE DUAL MAJORS IN SECONDARY EDUCATION AND BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, OR PHYSICS AND GRADUATE PREPARED TO TEACH IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS. PROJECT GOALS ALSO INCLUDE DEVELOPING SCHOLARS' CURRICULAR BELIEFS AND ACTIONS IN SUPPORT OF EFFECTIVENESS. THESE GOALS WILL BE ADDRESSED BY EXPANDING RECRUITMENT IN STEM DISCIPLINES TO INCLUDE COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJORS WITH AT LEAST 3 SCHOLARS AND 3 NEW ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE GRADES MENTORS FOR APPRENTICESHIP EXPERIENCES FOR THIS P-12 CERTIFICATION AREA. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP SCHOLARS' LINGUISTIC CULTURAL COMPETENCE THROUGH A REQUIRED ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES ENDORSEMENT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF STEM TEACHERS' TEACHING AND LEARNING PHILOSOPHIES WILL BE TRACKED THROUGH THEIR PREPARATION AND INDUCTION YEARS USING TEACHING PHILOSOPHY INVENTORIES, WHICH WILL ALSO BE USED TO INTENTIONALLY PAIR SCHOLARS WITH MENTORS. GRADUATED SCHOLARS WILL BE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN MICRO-CREDENTIALING OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT NEW AND MENTOR TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS. THE DATA COLLECTED FROM THE TEACHING PHILOSOPHY INVENTORIES ABOUT STUDENTS? DEVELOPMENT INTO TEACHING AS WELL AS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MICRO-CREDENTIALLING AS INDUCTION OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE SHARED WITH THE TEACHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY TO INFORM OTHER DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT EFFORTS. THIS TRACK 1: SCHOLARSHIPS AND STIPENDS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROJECT (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROJECT SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. VIKINGS CAMPUS SUICIDE PREVENTION - THE VIKINGS CAMPUS SUICIDE PREVENTION PROJECT AT BERRY COLLEGE WILL BOLSTER AND EXPAND CURRENT MENTAL HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE, OUTREACH, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING. TARGETED ACTIVITIES WILL REDUCE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS, SUBSTANCE USE, SUICIDAL BEHAVIOR/INJURY, AND SCHOOL FAILURE FOR STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH TO COHORTS OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AS WELL AS MALE ATHLETES, SCHOLARSHIP, AND MINORITY STUDENTS. THE 2020-2021 STUDENT BODY AT BERRY CONSISTS OF 2,006 UNDERGRADUATE AND 119 GRADUATE STUDENTS WITH 100% BEING BETWEEN THE AGES OF 17-24 WHO ARE MOSTLY FROM GEORGIA AND NEARBY STATES. THE RACIAL AND ETHNIC MAKEUP OF THE STUDENT BODY IS 78% CAUCASIAN, 7% BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN, 7% HISPANIC (OF ANY RACE), 2% ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER, 4% TWO OR MORE RACES, 1% INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, 1% UNKNOWN, AND <1% AMERICAN INDIAN OR ALASKA NATIVE WITH 61% FEMALE AND 39% MALE. BERRY’S COUNSELING CENTER SERVES AT LEAST 18% OF THE STUDENT BODY EACH YEAR AND THE DEMOGRAPHICS ARE REFLECTIVE OF THE TOTAL STUDENT BODY. BERRY EXPERIENCED ITS FIRST STUDENT SUICIDE IN OVER FIVE YEARS IN JANUARY OF 2021 AND IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS HAS HAD FOUR SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, TWO SUBSTANCE USE OVERDOSES, NINE DOCUMENTED ER VISITS, 25 REPORTS OF SELF-HARM, AND 15 HOSPITALIZATIONS. OF THOSE WHO SOUGHT SERVICES IN 2019-2020, 50/307 (16%) ALREADY HAD A SIGNIFICANT HISTORY OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND 64% MET SCREENING CRITERIA FOR A CLINICAL LEVEL OF SYMPTOMS INTAKE. THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO 1) INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF THE BERRY COMMUNITY TO RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND TO STUDENTS AT RISK OF SELF-HARM AND 2) CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND SELF-HARM. A CRITICAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS THE FORMATION OF A MENTAL HEALTH COMMITTEE (MHC), WHICH WILL BE MADE UP OF KEY FACULTY/STAFF, STUDENT LEADERS, AND STAKEHOLDERS REPRESENTING ALL TARGET POPULATIONS. THE MHC WILL OVERSEE: THE ADDITION OF THE COUNSELING CENTER PHONE NUMBER AND NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION HOTLINE TO ALL FIRST-YEAR STUDENT ID’S; EXPANSION AND PROMOTION OF STUDENT USE OF THE MIND WISE SCREENING TOOL; THE DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF STUDENT AND FACULTY/STAFF EDUCATION MODULES ON MENTAL HEALTH TOPICS; THE CAMPUS-WIDE EXPANSION OF MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (MHFA) TRAINING; THE DELIVERY AND ANALYSIS OF THE HEALTHY MINDS SURVEY; OUTREACH ON HOW TO ACCESS SERVICES TO STUDENTS/PARENTS; AND THE INCREASE OF ON-CAMPUS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CLINICIAN CAPACITY TO 1.4 FTE. THE COMMITTEE WILL ALSO ENHANCE AND STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS WITH FLOYD BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, HIGHLAND RIVERS HEALTH, AND NAMI. THE BERRY COUNSELING CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE DIRECT COUNSELING SERVICES, TRAIN PEER EDUCATORS, AND FACILITATE REFERRALS TO VIRTUAL CARE GROUP (VCG) TO ENSURE INCREASED DEMAND DOES NOT OUTPACE CAPACITY. THE PROJECT WILL ALLOW BERRY TO FULLY TRAIN 3-4 KEY STAFF AS CERTIFIED MHFA TRAINERS AND 200 STAFF/FACULTY/STUDENT LEADERS WILL BE TRAINED IN MHFA. 1,785 STUDENTS AND 50 FACULTY WILL PARTICIPATE IN EDUCATION MODULES, THE COUNSELING CENTER WILL PROVIDE THERAPY/COUNSELING TO OVER 300 STUDENTS ANNUALLY, AND 300 STUDENTS WILL REGISTER WITH THE VCG.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: SBP: SCIENTIFIC TOPICS AND CAREERS AT THE INTERSECTION: AN ALGORITHMIC APPROACH -THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INVESTIGATE THE DIRECT HARMS TO SCIENCE WROUGHT BY STRUCTURAL RACISM AND THE BENEFITS DERIVED BY THE INCLUSION OF PEOPLE OF COLOR AND OTHER HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED GROUPS IN THE SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE. SPECIFICALLY, THIS WORK SEEKS TO (A) QUANTIFY THE PARTICIPATION OF PEOPLE OF COLOR AND MEMBERS OF HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED POPULATIONS IN THE PRODUCTION OF SCIENCE, (B) ELUCIDATE THEIR ROLE IN PROPELLING INTELLECTUAL INNOVATIONS, AND (C) UNDERSTAND HOW THE DISTRIBUTION OF LABOR AND COMPOSITION OF SCIENTIFIC TEAMS CREATES BARRIERS AND PATHWAYS TO THEIR SCIENTIFIC SUCCESS. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE MISSION OF OPEN SCIENCE, BY MAKING THE ALGORITHMS AND PUBLICATIONS OPENLY AVAILABLE TO PROPEL THIS AREA OF RESEARCH. FINALLY, THE PI TEAM WILL RECRUIT A COHORT OF A DOZEN STUDENT FELLOWS FROM A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES AND COUNTRIES TO DISCUSS THE WAYS IN WHICH THEY INCORPORATE THEIR LIVED EXPERIENCES INTO RESEARCH DESIGN AND THE CHALLENGES AND BARRIERS TO THIS PROCESS. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO DOCTORAL STUDENTS OF COLOR, OR WHO IDENTIFY AS A MEMBER OF A HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED POPULATION WITHIN THEIR COUNTRY OF AFFILIATION. THE RESEARCH HAS STRONG IMPLICATIONS FOR ALL SECTORS OF SOCIETY. BERRY COLLEGE IS ACQUIRING A BIO-LAYER INTERFEROMETRY (BLI) SPECTROMETER TO SUPPORT THE RESEARCH OF PROFESSOR DOMINIC QUALLEY AND COLLEAGUES ANGELA POOLE, ALICE SUROVIEC, AND MARK TURLINGTON. THIS INSTRUMENT FACILITATES RESEARCH IN THE AREAS OF MACROMOLECULAR BINDING KINETICS AND REAL-TIME BIOMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS. BLI IS AN OPTICAL METHOD THAT MEASURES INTERFERENCE PATTERNS OF WHITE LIGHT THAT ARE REFLECTED FROM A SURFACE COATED IN BIOMOLECULES TO REVEAL REAL-TIME BINDING INTERACTIONS. AS A RESULT, MACROMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS, AFFINITY, AND KINETICS CAN BE QUANTIFIED. THIS INSTRUMENT ENHANCES THE EDUCATIONAL, RESEARCH, AND TEACHING EFFORTS OF STUDENTS IN MANY DEPARTMENTS AS WELL AS PROVIDES ACCESSIBILITY FOR LOCAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. RESEARCH AND RESEARCH TRAINING IN THE AREAS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY ARE TARGETED. THE NATION CONTINUES TO FACE CHALLENGES IN ATTRACTING AND RETAINING UNDERREPRESENTED AND MINORITIZED (URM) STUDENTS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) FIELDS AND CAREERS. THE NATION IS EXPERIENCING RAPID DEPLOYMENT OF DATA-DRIVEN TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES LIKE GENERATIVE AI AND MUST BE AWARE THEIR POTENTIAL HARMS, SUCH AS ALGORITHMIC BIASES. THIS PROJECT WILL COLLECT DATA FROM DS PROFESSORS AND URM UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO INFORM HOW URM STUDENTS MAKE DECISIONS TO PERSIST IN DS FIELDS. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS CAREER PROJECT IS TO EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URM DATA SCIENCE STUDENTS? RACIALIZED EXPERIENCES AND THEIR PERSISTENCE IN THE FIELD, USING THESE INSIGHTS TO BROADEN PATHWAYS INTO STEM FOR A MORE DIVERSE SEGMENT OF THE STUDENT POPULATION. USING THE EQUITY ETHICS FRAMEWORK AND SOCIAL COGNITIVE CAREER THEORY, THIS PROJECT WILL: (1) DOCUMENT THE IMPACT OF RACIALIZED EXPERIENCES ON THE EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS OF URM DS STUDENTS THROUGH FOCUS GROUPS AND A NATIONAL SURVEY OF DS PROFESSIONALS; (2) INTERVIEW DS PROGRAM DIRECTORS TO ASSESS HOW THEIR INSTITUTIONS AND PROGRAMS EITHER MITIGATE OR PERPETUATE THESE BARRIERS; AND (3) IDENTIFY CONCRETE, PRACTICAL APPROACHES FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN DATA SCIENCE AND RELATED FIELDS (E.G., MACHINE LEARNING, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE). THE RESEARCH DESIGN INCLUDES MIXED METHODS, INCLUDING INTERVIEWS WITH UNIVERSITY DS DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND LARGE-SCALE SURVEYS AND FOCUS GROUPS WITH URM DS MAJORS. THIS WORK AIMS TO RESHAPE HOW DS PROGRAMS APPROACH INCREASING THE DIVERSITY OF THE DS WORKFORCE BY EXPANDING PATHWAYS INTO STEM FOR A BROADER, MORE DIVERSE SEGMENT OF THE STUDENT POPULATION AND EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE REGARDING WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT DIVERSIFYING AN EMERGING FIELD. THIS CAREER PROPOSAL IS FUNDED BY THE EDU RACIAL EQUITY IN STEM EDUCATION ACTIVITY, WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY THE DIRECTORATE FOR STEM EDUCATION (EDU). THIS ACTIVITY SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND PRACTICE PROJECTS THAT INVESTIGATE HOW CONSIDERATIONS OF RACIAL EQUITY FACTOR INTO THE IMPROVEMENT OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE. AWARDED PROJECTS SEEK TO CENTER THE VOICES, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCES OF THE INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND INSTITUTIONS MOST IMPACTED BY SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES WITHIN THE STEM ENTERPRISE. PROGRAMS ACROSS EDU CONTRIBUTE FUNDS TO THE RACIAL EQUITY ACTIVITY IN RECOGNITION OF THE ALIGNMENT OF ITS PROJECTS WITH THE COLLECTIVE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT THRUSTS OF THE FOUR DIVISIONS OF THE DIRECTORATE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
