LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM: EXPOSURE OF UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND POSTGRADUATES TO MINORITY HEALTH, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, LOCATED IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT, FULLY ACCREDITED, HISTORICALLY BLACK LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN IN THE U.S. THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, THE COLLEGE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TRAINED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CAREERS. FURTHERMORE, MOREHOUSE RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP UNDERGRADUATE PRODUCERS OF BLACKS WITH DOCTORAL AND MEDICAL DEGREES IN THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION, THE COLLEGE CONFERS MORE BACCALAUREATE DEGREES UPON AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN THAN ANY OTHER INSTITUTION IN THE WORLD. OVER THE PAST THREE DECADES, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE HAS HAD THE VISION TO SUPPORT THE TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO DIVERSIFY THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. PHSI WAS CREATED SIX (6) YEARS AFTER PROJECT IMHOTEP (1988) THROUGH A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) & PREVENTION TO SUPPORT PROJECT IMHOTEP WHICH WAS ESTABLISH IN 1982 WITHIN CDC’S DIVISION OF HIV, STD & TB PREVENTION. PHSI WAS DESIGNED TO TRAIN UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED MINORITY STUDENTS IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES. FOR THE PAST 41 YEARS, THE PRIMARY GOAL OF PROJECT IMHOTEP HAS BEEN TO PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS FOR ENTRY INTRO GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND CAREERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH. TO CONTINUE ITS MISSION, THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE IS SUBMITTING A GRANT PROPOSAL TO FUND THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP (LSI) PROGRAM UNDER CDC-RFA-CD22-2201: CATEGORY A - CDC JOHN R. LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM: EXPOSURE OF UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND POSTGRADUATES TO MINORITY HEALTH, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS. THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THE HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030 OVERARCHING GOAL TO ACHIEVE HEALTH EQUITY, ELIMINATE HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF ALL GROUPS BY INCREASING THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF WELL-TRAINED PROFESSIONALS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS INTO THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. THE LSI PROGRAM AIMS TO: (A) IMPROVE STUDENT ACADEMIC SKILLS AND INCREASE INTEREST IN PUBLIC HEALTH; (B) INCREASED AWARENESS OF PUBLIC HEALTH CAREER OPPORTUNITIES; (C) INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH CONCEPTS, INCLUDING HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH; AND (D) IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF PROFESSIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. OVER 2000 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN ONE OR MORE OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES PROVIDED BY PHSI AND 77% OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE EARNED OR ARE PURSUING AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN PUBLIC HEALTH AND/OR IN BIOMEDICAL HEALTH (DUFFUS, W., TRAWICK, C., MOONESINGHE R., TOLA J., TRUMAN B. & DEAN, H. (2014)). THE MAJORITY OF THE PARTICIPANTS (55%) ARE CURRENTLY WORKING IN A PUBLIC HEALTH POSITION INCLUDING: FEDERAL (23%), STATE (6%), LOCAL (5%), ACADEMIA (23%), NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (21%), AND OTHER (35%). THUS, PHSI HAS A SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY STUDENTS REPRESENTED IN THE AREAS OF BIOSTATISTICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY, AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH.

BPC-AE: COLLABORATIVE: EVOLUTION OF THE INSTITUTE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS IN COMPUTING SCIENCES (IAAMCS) -MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, AUBURN UNIVERSITY, AND THE AMERICAN INSTITUTES FOR RESEARCH WILL COLLABORATE TO EXTEND THE INSTITUTE FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN MENTORING IN COMPUTING SCIENCES (IAAMCS, PRONOUNCED I AM CS). IAAMCS SERVES AS A NATIONAL RESOURCE FOR THE COMPUTING COMMUNITY AND EMPHASIZES MENTORING AS A PRIMARY STRATEGY FOR INCREASING THE PARTICIPATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN COMPUTING. IAAMCS SEEKS TO BUILD AN ECOSYSTEM FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCHERS THAT HAVE CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER THROUGH IAAMCS ACTIVITIES INCLUDING: FELLOWSHIP WRITING BOOTCAMP, FUTURE FACULTY AND RESEARCH SCIENTIST MENTORING PROGRAM, ANNUAL REPORT ON THE STATE OF BLACKS IN COMPUTING IN HIGHER EDUCATION, AND THE BLACK STUDENT MATCHING REGISTRY. IAAMCS WILL DEVELOP AND DISSEMINATE MENTORING CONTENT RESOURCES AND GUIDELINES FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS IN COMPUTING PROGRAMS. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE IAAMCS IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS OBTAINING GRADUATE COMPUTING DEGREES LEADING TO AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN RESEARCHERS IN THE ACADEMY, GOVERNMENT, AND INDUSTRY. IAAMCS WILL FURTHER ITS ROLE AS A NATIONAL RESOURCE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS IN COMPUTING AND SERVE AS AN INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION, NETWORKING, AND EVALUATION COMMUNITY FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO ARE EITHER CONSIDERING AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN COMPUTING OR ENROLLED IN A GRADUATE COMPUTING PROGRAM. AS AN ALLIANCE, IAAMCS WILL BRING TOGETHER MENTORS, ADVISORS, AND SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS IN AN EFFORT TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, MENTORING, INFORMATION, OPPORTUNITIES, AND NETWORKING TO ITS MEMBERS. THOSE PARTICIPANTS DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY IAAMCS INCLUDE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPUTING UNDERGRADUATES WHO ARE INTERESTED IN GRADUATE SCHOOL, AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPUTING GRADUATE STUDENTS, CISE PIS, CS DEPARTMENTS, BPC RESEARCHERS, AFRICAN AMERICAN CS FACULTY, AND HBCU CS FACULTY. THE GOALS FOR THIS ALLIANCE EXTENSION INCLUDE: 1) INCREASE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS IN GRADUATE COMPUTING PROGRAMS; 2) INCREASE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN RECIPIENTS OF GRADUATE DEGREES IN COMPUTING; 3) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO ENTER THE PROFESSORIATE; 4) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO ENTER CAREERS THAT UTILIZE AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN COMPUTING; 5) LONGITUDINAL DATA COLLECTION AND EVALUATION FOR NATIONAL DISSEMINATION; 6) SUPPORT CISE PIS AND CS DEPARTMENTS LOOKING TO SUPPORT BPC EFFORTS; AND 7) SUPPORT HBCU AND AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPUTER SCIENCE FACULTY. IAAMCS ACTIVITIES WILL ALL FALL IN THE CATEGORIES OF ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING, CORE RESEARCH, PLATFORM MANAGEMENT, AND EVENT PARTICIPATION. THROUGH SIGNIFICANT, CREATIVE INTEGRATIONS USING YOUTUBE AND LINKEDIN, IAAMCS PLANS TO EXPAND THE REACH OF STUDENTS WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ITS PROGRAMMING. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

THUS, EXPANDING THE FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS IS CRITICAL. THE INTEREST OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UNVEIL THE ULTRAFAST QUANTUM PHENOMENA AT THE ATTOSECOND SCALE, BY DEVELOPING A NEW TECHNIQUE CAPABLE OF DETECTING AND CROSS-CORRELATING WAVE-PACKETS WITH SINGLE-DIGIT ATTOSECOND OR SINGLE-PARTICLE LEVEL ACCURACY AT GHZ DATA RATES. THIS PROJECT LEVERAGES A MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATION LED BY THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, THE ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING AND PHYSICS & ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, AND A TRAINEESHIP PROGRAM AT THE LINAC COHERENT LIGHT SOURCE UNDER STANFORD UNIVERSITY?S SLAC NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY. THIS PARTNERSHIP IS USED TO STRENGTHEN THE EXISTING EFFORTS TO RECRUIT, RETAIN, AND GRADUATE UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE PARTICIPANTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN STEM AND HELP TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF QUANTUM SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: CONTROLLING ELECTRONIC COHERENCE IN ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR, AND CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS IS A LONG-SOUGHT-AFTER GOAL. PHOTO-EXCITATION PATHWAYS CAN BE EXPLOITED TO COHERENTLY TRANSMUTE LIGHT WAVE-PACKETS INTO CHARGE EXCITATIONS AND ELECTRONIC PHASE TRANSITIONS FOR QUANTUM AND NEUROMORPHIC COMPUTING. THUS, MEASURING AND UNDERSTANDING THE (DE)COHERENCE MECHANISMS OF TECHNOLOGICALLY RELEVANT QUANTUM MATERIALS?E.G., CORRELATED MATERIALS SUCH AS TWISTED GRAPHENE AND 3D DIRAC SEMIMETALS ? IS A CRUCIAL FIRST STEP TO THE DEPLOYMENT OF DECOHERENCE MITIGATION STRATEGIES. THE TECHNOLOGY THE RESEARCH TEAM AIMS TO DEVELOP IS CAPABLE OF MEASURING QUANTUM-LEVEL DE/EXCITATION MECHANISMS IN A WIDE ENSEMBLE OF PHYSICAL SYSTEMS. AS A MODEL SYSTEM, THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES HIGH-HARMONIC GENERATION AS ONE PROMINENT TYPE OF ATTOSECOND-LEVEL ELECTRONIC DYNAMICAL SYSTEM. HIGH-HARMONIC GENERATION IN STRONGLY CORRELATED MATERIALS GENERATE ULTRAFAST LIGHT SOURCE VIA QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITION BY NONLINEAR OPTICS IN STRONG LASER FIELDS. THIS PROJECT COULD EXPERIMENTALLY VERIFY EMERGING THEORY ON THE QUANTUM NATURE OF HIGH-HARMONIC GENERATION, A PROCESS THAT IS TRADITIONALLY DESCRIBED THROUGH (SEMI)CLASSICAL FRAMEWORKS. THE BROADER IMPACT OF THIS STUDY SPANS BEYOND QUANTUM INFORMATION SCIENCE TO RENDER A NEW TRANSFORMATIONAL TOOL IN MOLECULAR PHYSICS, QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS, RELATIVISTIC AND NONLINEAR OPTICS, AND PARTICLE PHYSICS. LEAP IS LED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO AND ADDRESSES THE CRITICAL CHALLENGE OF INCREASING THE DIVERSITY OF COMPUTING FACULTY AT RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES AS A WAY TO INCREASE DIVERSITY ACROSS THE FIELD. TO MEET THIS GOAL, LEAP SUPPORTS INSTITUTIONAL COHORTS STRATEGICALLY DESIGNED TO BUILD COMMUNITY AMONG SIMILAR INSTITUTION TYPES AND IDENTIFY KEY PRACTICES IN SUPPORTING STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN COMPUTING ACROSS DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXTS. THIS EXTENSION WILL BUILD UPON LESSONS LEARNED BY THESE COHORTS AND CONTINUE TO REFINE STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE COMPUTING PROFESSORIATE. THE EXTENSION WILL ALSO ESTABLISH AN AFFILIATES PROGRAM TO SHARE BEST PRACTICES AND LESSONS LEARNED ACROSS LEAP COHORTS AND NEW AFFILIATE MEMBER INSTITUTIONS. THE PROBLEM THE LEAP ALLIANCE ADDRESSES IS STARK AND STRAIGHT-FORWARD: ONLY 5.3% OF THE FACULTY (TENURED, TENURE TRACK, TEACHING, RESEARCH, INSTRUCTORS, AND POSTDOCS) AT PHD-GRANTING UNIVERSITIES ARE FROM THE FOLLOWING UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES: BLACK OR AFRICAN-AMERICAN, HISPANIC, AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE, OR NATIVE HAWAIIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER. THIS EXTENSION BUILDS UPON THE INITIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND LESSONS LEARNED AND ENTAILS TWO MAIN ACTIVITIES: (1) THE CONTINUATION AND REFINEMENT OF THE LEAP ALLIANCE STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE COMPUTING PROFESSORIATE AND (2) THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN AFFILIATES PROGRAM FOR STRONG CROSS-DISSEMINATION OF GOOD PRACTICES AND LESSONS LEARNED BETWEEN THE FOUR COHORTS AND THE AFFILIATE MEMBER INSTITUTIONS. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH A DATA SCIENCE COURSE SEQUENCE FOCUSING ON DEEP LEARNING FOR STUDENTS MAJORING IN PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE. THIS PROJECT GOALS ARE TO 1) ESTABLISH A THREE-COURSE DATA SCIENCE SEQUENCE FOCUSING ON EMERGENT MODELING TECHNIQUES IN DEEP LEARNING, AND 2) CREATE A COLLABORATIVE IN-HOUSE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY TO BRING TOGETHER THE ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN THE CLASSROOM AND APPLY IT TO PRACTICAL REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS. THE DATA SCIENCE COURSE SEQUENCE WILL BE COMPOSED OF A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE FOR JUNIOR OR SENIOR STUDENTS AND A ONE-TERM COLLABORATIVE IN-HOUSE HANDS-ON TRAINING OPPORTUNITY. IN THE TWO-SEMESTER COURSE, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF MACHINE LEARNING AND DEEP NEURAL NETWORK. THEY WILL LEARN TO USE TYPICAL OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE FRAMEWORKS SUCH TENSORFLOW OR PYTORCH TO SOLVE THE ASSIGNED EXERCISES. SIMPLE HANDS-ON PROJECTS IN OBJECTIVE DETECTION AND SEGMENTATION WILL BE INTRODUCED. THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE A JETSON NANO GPU TO RUN AN AUTONOMOUS TOY-LIKE VEHICLE. THE ONE SEMESTER TERM PROJECT COURSE AIMS TO GIVE THE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEAM UP WITH THE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS TO WORK ON REAL WORLD DATA SCIENCE PROBLEMS. THE DATA COLLECTION PLAN INCLUDES SURVEYS, DEPARTMENTAL DOCUMENT REVIEW, AND PHENOMENOLOGICAL SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS WITH UNDERGRADUATE COMPUTING MAJORS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATORS, AND STUDENTS WHO WITHDREW FROM COMPUTING MAJORS. DATA ARE ANALYZED USING A HYBRID OF DEDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE THEMATIC CODING TO DEVELOP INSTITUTIONAL MODELS LINKING STUDENT BACKGROUND (INPUT), LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (ENVIRONMENT), AND OUTCOMES (E.G., GRADUATION AND CAREER GOALS). THIS PROJECT GOES BEYOND IDENTIFYING FACTORS RELATED TO SUCCESS AND PERSISTENCE WITHIN COMPUTING MAJORS. IT IS DESIGNED TO EXPAND UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THESE FACTORS RELATE TO STUDENTS' PERSISTENCE AND CAREER ASPIRATIONS IN COMPUTING DISCIPLINES, WHICH ARE EXPERIENCING EXPONENTIAL GROWTH AND REQUIRE A SKILLED WORKFORCE. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CISE-MSI: RCBP-ED: CCRI: TECHHOUSE PARTNERSHIP TO INCREASE THE COMPUTER ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPANSION AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE -THE AWARD EXPANDS A SYMBIOTIC, SUSTAINABLE ALLIANCE BETWEEN A TOP-FIVE ENGINEERING PROGRAM, GEORGIA TECH, AND A TOP-FIVE HBCU, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, WITH A PRIMARY END GOAL OF INCREASING THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS WHO POSSESS KNOWLEDGE OF BOTH COMPUTER SCIENCE AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING TO HELP ADDRESS NATIONAL NEEDS LIKE SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING. WITH THE PASSING OF THE BIPARTISAN CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT OF 2022, IT IS NOT ONLY A GOAL OF THE NATION TO INCREASE JOBS AND STRENGTHEN SUPPLY CHAINS BUT OF NATIONAL SECURITY. MANY OF THESE EMERGING JOBS WILL REQUIRE ADVANCED DEGREES IN ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING. WITH THE COST OF EQUIPMENT, LABS, AND FACULTY TO TEACH IN GRADUATE PROGRAMS, STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP MAXIMIZES THE YIELD OF ENGINEERS AND RESEARCHERS NEEDED TO WORK IN THESE ROLES. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THE GRANT IS CENTERED AROUND INCREASING THE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE. SUPPORT WILL COME FROM A COLLECTIVE EFFORT FROM GEORGIA TECH. HOWEVER, THE COLLEGE OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING WILL SERVE AS THE PRIMARY COLLEGE AT GEORGIA TECH SUPPORTING THIS EFFORT. PROJECT ACTIVITIES INCLUDED IN THE GRANT ARE ORGANIZED VISITS TO GEORGIA TECH RESEARCH LABS, REGULAR MEETINGS TO DISCUSS COLLABORATION GOALS, PRE-FRESHMAN SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM INTEGRATION, CONFERENCE TRAVEL, AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR PARTICIPATING MOREHOUSE STUDENTS. THE PARTNERSHIP AIMS TO TRAIN MOREHOUSE STUDENTS WHO MAY CONSIDER RETURNING TO MOREHOUSE AS POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS, RESEARCH SCIENTISTS, OR FACULTY AFTER COMPLETING THEIR GRADUATE DEGREE AT GEORGIA TECH. TWO COMPUTER SCIENCE FACULTY MEMBERS FROM TWO OTHER ATLANTA HBCUS (SPELMAN COLLEGE AND CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY) WILL ALSO BE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN MEETINGS FOR EVENTUAL COLLABORATION ON FUTURE NSF PROPOSALS. GRADUATING STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM?S ACTIVITIES MAY GO ON TO DUAL DEGREE AND GRADUATE PROGRAMS OUTSIDE OF GEORGIA TECH, CREATING A NATIONWIDE FUNNEL OF CHIPS TALENT. PROGRAM. THIS COLLABORATION WILL PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TRAINING PRIMARILY AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS TO LEARN THREE-DIMENSIONAL (3D) PRINTING AND NEW CHEMISTRIES TO IMPROVE THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN HYDROGELS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MONET, THE PREC PLANNING GRANT WILL SUPPORT NEW EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS IN CHEMISTRY BY DEVELOPING NEW CHEMISTRY COURSES USING MONET-BASED RESEARCH TOOLS AND HOSTING TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS. THIS PREC PLANNING GRANT WILL ALSO ESTABLISH A BROADER COMMUNITY OF HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS) RESEARCHERS AND MINORITY TRAINEES CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN MACROMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY AND SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH FOR K-12 STUDENTS IN THE METRO ATLANTA AREA. USING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING AS A TOOL TO IMPROVE HYDROGEL THREE-DIMENSIONAL (3D) STRUCTURES WITH PRECISE ARCHITECTURE AT VARIOUS SCALES WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND OVER THE YEARS. THIS PREC PLANNING GRANT WILL LEVERAGE THE MONET EXPERTISE TO STUDY CHEMICAL STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF HYDROGELS. THRUST ONE AIMS TO DEVELOP MECHANICALLY ROBUST HYDROGELS USING CROSSLINKING CHEMISTRIES TO IMPROVE HYDROGEL USE IN TISSUE ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS. THRUST TWO WILL SUPPORT IMPROVING THE CHEMISTRIES OF 3D PRINTED SCAFFOLDS USING MECHANOPHORES TO CREATE ROBUST 3D SCAFFOLDS. THRUST THREE WILL GUIDE THE SYNTHESIS OF INTERPENETRATING DOUBLE-NETWORK COMPOSITE HYDROGELS CONTAINING HYALURONIC ACID TO PRODUCE MORE ROBUST HYDROGEL NETWORKS. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCU) THAT EDUCATES UNDERGRADUATES OF COLOR, WILL PARTNER WITH MONET TO EXPAND KNOWLEDGE IN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING OF HYDROGELS BY VARYING FEEDSTOCK RATIOS AND CROSSLINKING CHEMISTRIES. THIS PARTNERSHIP WILL ESTABLISH A NETWORK OF HBCU RESEARCHERS WITH MACROMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY EXPERTISE, DEVELOPING CROSS-DISCIPLINARY CHEMISTRY COURSES USING MONET RESOURCES AND HOSTING K-12 SCIENCE OUTREACH ACTIVITIES FOR THE BROADER METRO ATLANTA COMMUNITY.
