THIS PROJECT IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE SEQUOIA PARK ZOO FOUNDATION (COOPERATOR) AND THE ARCATA FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICE'S ECOLOGICAL SERVICES PROGRAM. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO HELP RECOVER THE FEDERALLY ENDANGERED BEHRENS SILVERSPOT BUTTERFLY (BSB) BY AUGMENTING EXISTING POPULATIONS WITH CAPTIVELY-REARED LARVAE, PUPAE, AND ADULTS. THE ZOO WILL CARE FOR FERTILIZED ADULT BSB WHILE THEY LAY EGGS THROUGH THE END OF THEIR LIFE. THE ZOO WILL CARE FOR THE EGGS, LARVAE, PUPAE, AND ADULTS AS THEY MATURE. THE AUGMENTATION OF EXISTING POPULATIONS HELPS PREVENT EXTINCTION AND PROVIDES INCREASES TO NATURAL POPULATIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN DECREASING. THIS FUNDING WILL GO TOWARDS PERSONNEL AND TRAVEL NECESSARY TO CONDUCT THE CAPTIVE REARING AND RELEASES. ZOO STAFF WILL CONDUCT THE WORK. PROJECT REPORTING WILL OCCUR ANNUALLY.
