| National Science Foundation | EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH - GENOMIC INFERENCES OF ADAPTATION IN AN ANTARCTIC TOP PREDATOR: THE LEOPARD SEAL (EIR-GIANT) -MARINE MAMMALS ARE ICONIC REPRESENTATIVES OF GLOBAL MARINE BIODIVERSITY THAT PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLES OF MAMMALIAN ADAPTATIONS TO EXTREME HABITATS WORLDWIDE. THESE ADAPTATIONS HAVE CAPTURED THE HUMAN IMAGINATION FOR CENTURIES AND INCLUDE SPECIALIZED SKIN TISSUES, LIMB MORPHOLOGY, SOUND PRODUCTION, OXYGEN STORAGE AND FEEDING STRATEGIES. ANTARCTIC ICE SEALS HAVE REMARKABLE ABILITIES TO SURVIVE IN EXTREMELY COLD WATERS, AND UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE ADAPTATIONS EVOLVED WILL ALLOW BETTER PREDICTIONS OF THEIR RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE. IMPORTANTLY, STUDYING ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS CAN LEAD TO INVALUABLE UNFORESEEN DISCOVERIES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (E.G., ENGINEERING, MEDICINE, OCEANOGRAPHY). ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORK IS TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE FAR-REACHING EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE DISSEMINATED BY SOCIAL MEDIA AND BROADCASTING A SERIES OF PROFESSIONALLY PRODUCED VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN THE VALUE OF GENOMIC APPROACHES TO EXAMINE THE COMPLEXITY OF POLAR ECOSYSTEMS AND THEIR ROLE IN MAINTAINING GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY. THIS PROJECT IS ALSO CRITICAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF ONE OF THE ONLY ACTIVE POLAR RESEARCH PROGRAMS AT A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE/ UNIVERSITY, WHICH WILL DIRECTLY INCREASE THE INCLUSION OF UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN POLAR AND MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH. PROVIDING TRAINING TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN THE GROWING FIELD OF GENOMICS, WILL ULTIMATELY ENHANCE AND DIVERSIFY THE NATIONAL TALENT POOL IN STEM. LEOPARD SEALS AND WEDDELL SEALS ARE SISTER ANTARCTIC ICE SEAL SPECIES THAT DIVERGED ROUGHLY FOUR MILLION YEARS AGO. THEY OCCUPY THE SAME ENVIRONMENT BUT HAVE KEY BEHAVIORAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES, E.G., IN DEEP DIVING AND DIET. THIS PROJECT LEVERAGES THE RECENT SHARED ANCESTRY OF WEDDELL AND LEOPARD SEALS TO INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHENOTYPIC AND GENOMIC/EPIGENOMIC DIVERSITY IN THESE SPECIES. SPECIFICALLY, THE GOALS OF THIS RESEARCH ARE TO (1) OBTAIN A COMPLETE GENOME ASSEMBLY AND ANNOTATION OF THE LEOPARD SEAL GENOME (THE WEDDELL SEAL GENOME IS ALREADY AVAILABLE); (2) CONDUCT A COMPARATIVE GENOMIC ANALYSIS OF LEOPARD AND WEDDELL SEALS TO DETECT DIFFERENCES IN THE EXPANSION AND/OR CONTRACTION OF GENE FAMILIES, POSITIVELY SELECTED AND RAPIDLY EVOLVING GENES BETWEEN THE TWO SPECIES, WITH A FOCUS ON DEEP DIVING PHENOTYPES; AND 3) CHARACTERIZE MICRORNAS IN ANTARCTIC PINNIPED SPECIES TO IDENTIFY ADAPTIVE DIFFERENCES THAT MATCH HABITAT SPECIALIZATIONS. THIS APPROACH, USING TANDEM GENOMIC AND EPIGENOMIC DATA SETS, PROVIDES A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF POLAR MAMMAL ADAPTATIONS AND TIMELY PREDICTIVE DATA ON THEIR POTENTIAL FOR ADAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR SIMULATION LEARNING AND RESEARCH (SLAR) IS DEDICATED TO EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH THROUGH ADVANCING PATIENT SAFETY AND IMPROVING MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM PERFORMANCE. THIS INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL ENVIRONMENT AND LEARNING LABORATORY PROVIDES CHALLENGING, IMMERSIVE SIMULATION TRAINING FOR STUDENTS IN VARIOUS DISCIPLINES INCLUDING MEDICINE, PHYSICAL THERAPY, COMMUNICATIVE SCIENCES, NURSING, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY SLAR IS A SAFE SPACE WHERE LEARNING, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IS VALUED, FOSTERED, AND NURTURED. WE PROMOTE A DIVERSE, INCLUSIVE, AND EQUITABLE ENVIRONMENT WHERE SYSTEMS THINKING CAN STIMULATE CHANGE. | Department of Health and Human Services | 2/2: FEASIBILITY STUDY TO BUILD A COLLABORATION IN GENETICS AND GENOMIC CANCER RESEARCH - PROJECT SUMMARY THIS IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HAMPTON UNIVERSITY (HU) AND THE TISCH CANCER INSTITUTE (TCI) AT MOUNT SINAI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE THAT SEEKS TO ESTABLISH ROBUST COLLABORATIONS ON-SITE AND ONLINE TRAINING AND EDUCATION TO INCREASE HU FACULTY’S RESEARCH CAPACITY IN THE AREA OF GENETICS AND GENOMICS AND HEALTH DISPARITIES, WHILE INCREASING TCI RESEARCH IN HEALTH DISPARITIES, USING THE EXAMPLES OF PROSTATE AND BREAST CANCER. THE FINAL GOAL IS TO CREATE A COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE JOINT CENTER FOR GENETICS AND GENOMICS CANCER RESEARCH, ENCOMPASSING THE GENETICS AND GENOMICS ASPECTS OF HEALTH DISPARITIES TO EXPLAIN POPULATION DIFFERENCES IN BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER OCCURRENCE AND OUTCOME. THE PROPOSAL IS GROUNDED IN A LONGSTANDING AND PRODUCTIVE UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN FACULTY AT THESE TWO INSTITUTIONS, BUT IS DISTINCT IN ITS FOCUS, METHODS, AND GOALS. HENCE, THE PROPOSED PROGRAM WILL UTILIZE THE BEST PRACTICES LEARNED FROM PREVIOUS COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVORS TO INFORM AND CREATE AN INNOVATIVE PLATFORM WHICH WILL ENHANCE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT BOTH INSTITUTIONS WHILE ADDRESSING KEY INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES. OUR GOALS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH A SERIES OF WELL-COORDINATED TRAINING/EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND TWO PILOT RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT WERE STRATEGICALLY CHOSEN TO MEET OUR OVERARCHING GOALS OF 1) IMPROVING HEALTH OUTCOMES IN VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, 2) ADDRESSING GAPS IN CANCER DISPARITIES RESEARCH, 3) AUGMENTING GENOMIC, STATISTICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY EXPERTISE AND 4) ENHANCING INVESTIGATOR PRODUCTIVITY AND EXTRAMURAL FUNDING COMPETITIVENESS. TRAINING AND EDUCATION WILL AIM TO INCREASE HU FACULTY’S RESEARCH CAPACITY IN THE AREA OF GENETICS AND GENOMICS AND HEALTH DISPARITIES, USING THE EXAMPLES OF PROSTATE AND BREAST CANCER. IT WILL PROVIDE TCI ISMMS WITH ACCESS AND COLLABORATION TO SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS IN BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER DISPARITY ETIOLOGY, TREATMENT AND OUTCOME, AS WELL AS TO A MECHANISM TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF THE GENETICS AND GENOMICS FACULTY, WHICH HAS TRADITIONALLY LACKED DIVERSITY. THIS PROJECT COMBINES THE STRENGTHS OF TWO ENTITIES, HAMPTON UNIVERSITY AND BLACK IN MARINE SCIENCE, TO INCREASE THE PARTICIPATION OF BLACK PEOPLE IN MARINE SCIENCE RELATED FIELDS AND CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING THROUGH CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND JUSTICE-CENTERED PROGRAMMING. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO BOOST OCEAN LITERACY AND RESEARCH WITHIN BLACK AND OTHER MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES AND EQUIP PEOPLE WITH TOOLS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THEIR CHANGING ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT WILL (1) ATTRACT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF COLOR INTO MARINE SCIENCE RELATED FIELDS, (2) ENGAGE UNDERGRADUATES THROUGH A CULTURALLY RELEVANT CURRICULUM, (3) SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATES DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND BUILD THEIR IDENTITY AS SCIENTISTS, (4) PREPARE UNDERGRADUATES FOR MARINE SCIENCE-RELATED AND STEM CAREERS, AND (5) INTRODUCE BOTH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND UNDERGRADUATES TO RESEARCH. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL COLLECT DATA ON THE EXPERIENCES AND IMPACTS ON PARTICIPANTS TO UNDERSTAND HOW DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT AFFECT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF AND SENSE OF BELONGING IN MARINE SCIENCES. THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND EQUITY-FOCUSED APPROACH, MIXED-METHODS (QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE) DATA COLLECTION STRATEGIES, AND APPLY AN EDUCATIVE AND VALUES-ENGAGED LENS. THESE METHODS WILL PROVIDE RICHER DATA, ALLOW FOR BETTER DATA TRIANGULATION, HIGHER MULTICULTURAL VALIDITY, AND PRODUCE MORE NUANCED EVALUATION RESULTS. THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS WITH KEY FINDINGS FROM THE EVALUATIONS, CONFERENCE, AND COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT THE STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES OF THE PROGRAMMING, CURRICULUM ACCESSIBLE TO TEACHERS AND LASTLY, DATA ON ATTRACTION, RETENTION, AND SENSE OF BELONGING OF PARTICIPANTS. THE MUSE EXPERIMENT WILL MEASURE THE PROTON CHARGE RADIUS VIA LEPTON-PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING, AND IT WILL COMPARE THE INTERACTIONS OF MUONS AND ELECTRONS OF EITHER CHARGE WITH THE PROTON AT A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL. THE EXPERIMENT WILL SEVERELY CONSTRAIN POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS OF THE CONFLICTING RESULTS AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO REVEAL NEW PHYSICS BEYOND THE STANDARD MODEL. THE PROJECT OFFERS HIGH-PROFILE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND POSTDOCS AT A MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTION AT THE FOREFRONT OF INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE PHYSICS RESEARCH. DESPITE RECENT PROGRESS REPORTED BY SPECTROSCOPY AND SCATTERING EXPERIMENTS, THE PUZZLE IS NOT NEARLY RESOLVED BUT HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF SYSTEMATIC UNCERTAINTIES. POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS OF THE PUZZLE ALSO INCLUDE NEW PHYSICS BEYOND THE STANDARD MODEL. THE MUSE EXPERIMENT AIMS TO ADDRESS ONE OF THE MOST PRESSING QUESTIONS IN NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE SCIENCE TO DATE. MUSE USES MIXED MUON AND ELECTRON BEAMS OF EITHER CHARGE (?+/E+, ??/E?) TO MAKE PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF THE LEPTON-PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING CROSS SECTIONS AND PROTON FORM FACTORS OVER A BROAD KINEMATIC RANGE, WITH THE GOAL TO EXTRACT THE PROTON CHARGE RADIUS FOR EACH PROBE. IT WILL DETERMINE WITH THE HIGHEST PRECISION, MODEL INDEPENDENTLY AND CONCLUSIVELY, IF THERE IS ANY PROTON CHARGE RADIUS DIFFERENCE OBSERVED IN ELECTRON VERSUS MUON SCATTERING. AT THE SAME TIME, IT WILL DETERMINE THE ROLE OF TWO-PHOTON EXCHANGE AND PROVIDE TIGHT CONSTRAINTS ON THEORY. THE GROUP SUPPORTED BY THIS AWARD PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HIGH-RESOLUTION BEAM PARTICLE TRACKING WITH GEM DETECTORS, IN A WAY NOT DONE BEFORE AT LOW BEAM ENERGIES. GIVEN THE URGENT NEED TO PROTECT AND RE-ESTABLISH OYSTER REEFS, A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSE OF THESE FOOD WEBS TO URBANIZATION THREATS AND RESTORATION EFFORTS IS NEEDED. THIS RESEARCH WILL ASSESS THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF PREDATORY CRABS IN THE FOOD WEBS OF RESTORED VERSUS DEGRADED OYSTER REEF HABITATS. THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE RESILIENCE OF COASTAL SYSTEMS AND SHOULD INFORM FUTURE RESTORATION. THIS PROJECT FEATURES GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TRAINING, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMMERSIVE COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE) WHERE STUDENTS GAIN TRAINING IN FIELD ECOLOGY, DATA VISUALIZATION, AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION. FINDINGS FROM THIS RESEARCH WILL BE SHARED THROUGH ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS, PUBLIC OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, AND STUDENT TRAINING PROGRAMS TO MAXIMIZE IMPACT. THESE INTERACTIONS MAY VARY AMONG ENVIRONMENTS THAT DIFFER IN THERMAL REGIME AND ACROSS AN ENVIRONMENTAL GRADIENT OF INCREASING URBANIZATION. THIS PROJECT CONNECTS THREE AIMS TO DETERMINE HOW WARMING AND URBANIZATION INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH BODY SIZE OF CRAB PREDATORS TO AFFECT A SHIFT IN CRAB DIET WITH CASCADING EFFECTS TO THE TROPHIC, AND OVERALL COMMUNITY, STRUCTURES OF OYSTER REEFS IN ESTUARINE HABITATS. FIRST, MESOCOSM EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT TEMPERATURE AND CRAB BODY SIZE INTERACT TO INDUCE A SHIFT IN CRAB DIETS. A SECOND HYPOTHESIS WILL TEST THE STRENGTH OF PREDATION BY CRABS IN SITU USING MANIPULATIVE CAGING EXPERIMENTS ACROSS 8 PAIRED URBANIZED AND RURAL OYSTER REEFS IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY TO EVALUATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH URBANIZATION OF ESTUARINE SITES IMPACTS COMMUNITY STRUCTURE. THE THIRD HYPOTHESIS WILL TEST WHETHER URBANIZATION OF ESTUARIES INDUCES A SHIFT IN CRAB DIETS THAT CHANGES BOTH THE STRENGTH OF PREDATION AND THE NATURE OF ESTUARINE COMMUNITY TROPHIC STRUCTURE BY COMPARING STABLE ISOTOPE RATIOS AT 8 PAIRED RESTORED AND DEGRADED OYSTER REEFS. THE INTENSE CUMULUS CONVECTION IN THE STORM LIFTED AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF MASS FROM THE WATER CONDENSATION LEVEL ESTIMATED TO BE AT A DEPTH OF 20 BAR TO THE UPPER TROPOSPHERIC ALTITUDES ABOVE 1 BAR. CASSINI S REMOTE-SENSING INSTRUMENTS DETECTED NUMEROUS CHANGES TRIGGERED BY THE STORM IN THE CLOUD MORPHOLOGY AND THERMAL STRUCTURE. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL ANALYZE THE VAST CLOUDLESS LATITUDE BAND LEFT BEHIND THE STORM. THE FORMATION OF THIS CLOUDLESS BAND IS SURPRISING BECAUSE A CUMULUS STORM TRANSPORTS SATURATED AIR UPWARD AND FORMS CLOUDS WHILE SUCH A CLEARING IS NORMALLY ASSOCIATED WITH SUBSIDENCE RATHER THAN UPWELLING. THROUGH OUR ANALYSIS OF THE RICH CASSINI DATASETS WE WILL PRODUCE A DETAILED RECORD OF WHEN AND WHERE THE STORM S CUMULUS CONVECTION RELEASED THE LIFTED MASS AND EXAMINE THE EXPANSION OF THE POST-STORM CLEARING UNTIL THE ENTIRE LATITUDINAL ZONE BECOMES CLOUDLESS. FURTHERMORE WE WILL EXTEND THE THEORETICAL FORMULATION FOR CYCLICAL GIANT STORMS HYPOTHESIZED BY LI AND INGERSOLL (2015) TO INCLUDE THE GRADUAL CLOUD CLEARING LIKE THAT OBSERVED BY SROMOVSKY ET AL. (2016). THE MOST RECENT STORM STARTED ON DECEMBER 5TH 2010 AND THE ACTIVE CUMULUS PHASE OF THE STORM ENDED IN AUGUST 2011. THE DYNAMICS OF THE STORM WAS DOCUMENTED IN NUMEROUS PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLES INCLUDING SAYANAGI ET AL. (2013 2014) AND SANCHEZ-LAVEGA ET AL. (2018). HOWEVER THE DISTURBANCE CAUSED BY THE STORM CONTINUED TO EVOLVE LONG AFTER THE ACTIVE CONVECTIVE PHASE UNTIL THE END OF CASSINI MISSION. THE TEMPORAL CHANGES COULD BE SEEN IN A WIDE RANGE OF WAVELENGTHS BETWEEN 5-MICRON CHANNEL OF VIMS AND THE 420 NM ISS FILTER. EVEN THOUGH THE TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE STORM S AFTERMATH EVOLVED THROUGHOUT THE CASSINI S SECOND EXTENDED MISSION (THE SOLSTICE MISSION ) ITS TEMPORAL EVOLUTION HAS NOT BEEN EXAMINED IN DETAIL. WE PROPOSE TO EXAMINE THE RICH DATASET RETURNED BY CASSINI ISS AND VIMS INSTRUMENTS TO CONDUCT A DETAILED INVESTIGATION OF THE TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE STORM S DYNAMIC AFTERMATH. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL CHARACTERIZE EMERGENCE AND GROWTH OF THE CLOUD-FREE REGION THAT APPEARED AT THE END OF THE ACTIVE CUMULUS PHASE OF THE STORM. EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH - GENOMIC INFERENCES OF ADAPTATION IN AN ANTARCTIC TOP PREDATOR: THE LEOPARD SEAL (EIR-GIANT) -MARINE MAMMALS ARE ICONIC REPRESENTATIVES OF GLOBAL MARINE BIODIVERSITY THAT PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLES OF MAMMALIAN ADAPTATIONS TO EXTREME HABITATS WORLDWIDE. THESE ADAPTATIONS HAVE CAPTURED THE HUMAN IMAGINATION FOR CENTURIES AND INCLUDE SPECIALIZED SKIN TISSUES, LIMB MORPHOLOGY, SOUND PRODUCTION, OXYGEN STORAGE AND FEEDING STRATEGIES. ANTARCTIC ICE SEALS HAVE REMARKABLE ABILITIES TO SURVIVE IN EXTREMELY COLD WATERS, AND UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE ADAPTATIONS EVOLVED WILL ALLOW BETTER PREDICTIONS OF THEIR RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE. IMPORTANTLY, STUDYING ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS CAN LEAD TO INVALUABLE UNFORESEEN DISCOVERIES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (E.G., ENGINEERING, MEDICINE, OCEANOGRAPHY). ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORK IS TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE FAR-REACHING EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE DISSEMINATED BY SOCIAL MEDIA AND BROADCASTING A SERIES OF PROFESSIONALLY PRODUCED VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN THE VALUE OF GENOMIC APPROACHES TO EXAMINE THE COMPLEXITY OF POLAR ECOSYSTEMS AND THEIR ROLE IN MAINTAINING GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY. THIS PROJECT IS ALSO CRITICAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF ONE OF THE ONLY ACTIVE POLAR RESEARCH PROGRAMS AT A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE/ UNIVERSITY, WHICH WILL DIRECTLY INCREASE THE INCLUSION OF UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN POLAR AND MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH. PROVIDING TRAINING TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN THE GROWING FIELD OF GENOMICS, WILL ULTIMATELY ENHANCE AND DIVERSIFY THE NATIONAL TALENT POOL IN STEM. LEOPARD SEALS AND WEDDELL SEALS ARE SISTER ANTARCTIC ICE SEAL SPECIES THAT DIVERGED ROUGHLY FOUR MILLION YEARS AGO. THEY OCCUPY THE SAME ENVIRONMENT BUT HAVE KEY BEHAVIORAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES, E.G., IN DEEP DIVING AND DIET. THIS PROJECT LEVERAGES THE RECENT SHARED ANCESTRY OF WEDDELL AND LEOPARD SEALS TO INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHENOTYPIC AND GENOMIC/EPIGENOMIC DIVERSITY IN THESE SPECIES. SPECIFICALLY, THE GOALS OF THIS RESEARCH ARE TO (1) OBTAIN A COMPLETE GENOME ASSEMBLY AND ANNOTATION OF THE LEOPARD SEAL GENOME (THE WEDDELL SEAL GENOME IS ALREADY AVAILABLE); (2) CONDUCT A COMPARATIVE GENOMIC ANALYSIS OF LEOPARD AND WEDDELL SEALS TO DETECT DIFFERENCES IN THE EXPANSION AND/OR CONTRACTION OF GENE FAMILIES, POSITIVELY SELECTED AND RAPIDLY EVOLVING GENES BETWEEN THE TWO SPECIES, WITH A FOCUS ON DEEP DIVING PHENOTYPES; AND 3) CHARACTERIZE MICRORNAS IN ANTARCTIC PINNIPED SPECIES TO IDENTIFY ADAPTIVE DIFFERENCES THAT MATCH HABITAT SPECIALIZATIONS. THIS APPROACH, USING TANDEM GENOMIC AND EPIGENOMIC DATA SETS, PROVIDES A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF POLAR MAMMAL ADAPTATIONS AND TIMELY PREDICTIVE DATA ON THEIR POTENTIAL FOR ADAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

HAMPTON UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR SIMULATION LEARNING AND RESEARCH (SLAR) IS DEDICATED TO EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH THROUGH ADVANCING PATIENT SAFETY AND IMPROVING MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM PERFORMANCE. THESE STUDENTS WILL GO ON TO SERVE THEIR COMMUNITIES IN VARIOUS AREAS OF HEALTHCARE DELIVERY. 2/2: FEASIBILITY STUDY TO BUILD A COLLABORATION IN GENETICS AND GENOMIC CANCER RESEARCH - PROJECT SUMMARY THIS IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HAMPTON UNIVERSITY (HU) AND THE TISCH CANCER INSTITUTE (TCI) AT MOUNT SINAI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE THAT SEEKS TO ESTABLISH ROBUST COLLABORATIONS ON-SITE AND ONLINE TRAINING AND EDUCATION TO INCREASE HU FACULTY’S RESEARCH CAPACITY IN THE AREA OF GENETICS AND GENOMICS AND HEALTH DISPARITIES, WHILE INCREASING TCI RESEARCH IN HEALTH DISPARITIES, USING THE EXAMPLES OF PROSTATE AND BREAST CANCER. THE FINAL GOAL IS TO CREATE A COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE JOINT CENTER FOR GENETICS AND GENOMICS CANCER RESEARCH, ENCOMPASSING THE GENETICS AND GENOMICS ASPECTS OF HEALTH DISPARITIES TO EXPLAIN POPULATION DIFFERENCES IN BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER OCCURRENCE AND OUTCOME. THE PROPOSAL IS GROUNDED IN A LONGSTANDING AND PRODUCTIVE UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN FACULTY AT THESE TWO INSTITUTIONS, BUT IS DISTINCT IN ITS FOCUS, METHODS, AND GOALS. HENCE, THE PROPOSED PROGRAM WILL UTILIZE THE BEST PRACTICES LEARNED FROM PREVIOUS COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVORS TO INFORM AND CREATE AN INNOVATIVE PLATFORM WHICH WILL ENHANCE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT BOTH INSTITUTIONS WHILE ADDRESSING KEY INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES. OUR GOALS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH A SERIES OF WELL-COORDINATED TRAINING/EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND TWO PILOT RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT WERE STRATEGICALLY CHOSEN TO MEET OUR OVERARCHING GOALS OF 1) IMPROVING HEALTH OUTCOMES IN VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, 2) ADDRESSING GAPS IN CANCER DISPARITIES RESEARCH, 3) AUGMENTING GENOMIC, STATISTICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY EXPERTISE AND 4) ENHANCING INVESTIGATOR PRODUCTIVITY AND EXTRAMURAL FUNDING COMPETITIVENESS. TRAINING AND EDUCATION WILL AIM TO INCREASE HU FACULTY’S RESEARCH CAPACITY IN THE AREA OF GENETICS AND GENOMICS AND HEALTH DISPARITIES, USING THE EXAMPLES OF PROSTATE AND BREAST CANCER. IT WILL PROVIDE TCI ISMMS WITH ACCESS AND COLLABORATION TO SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS IN BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER DISPARITY ETIOLOGY, TREATMENT AND OUTCOME, AS WELL AS TO A MECHANISM TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF THE GENETICS AND GENOMICS FACULTY, WHICH HAS TRADITIONALLY LACKED DIVERSITY. TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAM, WE HAVE ASSEMBLED AN EXCELLENT TEAM OF FACULTY WITH OUTSTANDING MENTORING AND TEACHING TRACK RECORDS, ALONG WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERTISE IN DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING NEW INITIATIVES AIMED AT DIVERSIFYING THE CLINICAL INVESTIGATOR WORKFORCE AND ELIMINATING HEALTH DISPARITIES. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: BUILDING RACIAL EQUITY IN MARINE SCIENCE -OCEAN SCIENCE IS ONE OF THE LEAST DIVERSE SCIENCES IN THE UNITED STATES. YET THE COMPLEX AND PRESSING ISSUES FACING THE OCEAN AND THE NEEDS OF OCEAN-DEPENDENT COMMUNITIES REQUIRE AN OCEAN-LITERATE SOCIETY WITH DIVERSE EXPERTISE, RACIAL IDENTITIES, AND EXPERIENCES. THIS PROJECT COMBINES THE STRENGTHS OF TWO ENTITIES, HAMPTON UNIVERSITY AND BLACK IN MARINE SCIENCE, TO INCREASE THE PARTICIPATION OF BLACK PEOPLE IN MARINE SCIENCE RELATED FIELDS AND CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING THROUGH CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND JUSTICE-CENTERED PROGRAMMING. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO BOOST OCEAN LITERACY AND RESEARCH WITHIN BLACK AND OTHER MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES AND EQUIP PEOPLE WITH TOOLS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THEIR CHANGING ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT WILL (1) ATTRACT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF COLOR INTO MARINE SCIENCE RELATED FIELDS, (2) ENGAGE UNDERGRADUATES THROUGH A CULTURALLY RELEVANT CURRICULUM, (3) SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATES DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND BUILD THEIR IDENTITY AS SCIENTISTS, (4) PREPARE UNDERGRADUATES FOR MARINE SCIENCE-RELATED AND STEM CAREERS, AND (5) INTRODUCE BOTH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND UNDERGRADUATES TO RESEARCH. ALL ACTIVITIES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED USING EQUITABLE STEM TEACHING TOOLS (CULTURAL PEDAGOGIES, MULTI-GENERATIONAL LEARNING, SUPPORTING DIVERSE SENSE-MAKING, CENTERING RACIAL JUSTICE, MEANINGFUL PHENOMENA, AND PLACE-BASED LEARNING). THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ANSWER THE OVERARCHING RESEARCH QUESTION: HOW DOES PARTICIPATION IN THE DESIGNED PROJECT ACTIVITIES IMPROVE OUTCOMES AND INCREASE RACIAL EQUITY FOR BLACK PEOPLE? THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL COLLECT DATA ON THE EXPERIENCES AND IMPACTS ON PARTICIPANTS TO UNDERSTAND HOW DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT AFFECT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF AND SENSE OF BELONGING IN MARINE SCIENCES. THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND EQUITY-FOCUSED APPROACH, MIXED-METHODS (QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE) DATA COLLECTION STRATEGIES, AND APPLY AN EDUCATIVE AND VALUES-ENGAGED LENS. THESE METHODS WILL PROVIDE RICHER DATA, ALLOW FOR BETTER DATA TRIANGULATION, HIGHER MULTICULTURAL VALIDITY, AND PRODUCE MORE NUANCED EVALUATION RESULTS. THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS WITH KEY FINDINGS FROM THE EVALUATIONS, CONFERENCE, AND COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT THE STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES OF THE PROGRAMMING, CURRICULUM ACCESSIBLE TO TEACHERS AND LASTLY, DATA ON ATTRACTION, RETENTION, AND SENSE OF BELONGING OF PARTICIPANTS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE RACIAL EQUITY IN STEM EDUCATION ACTIVITY (EDU RACIAL EQUITY). THE ACTIVITY SUPPORTS PROJECTS THAT PROMOTE RACIAL EQUITY IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. AWARDED PROJECTS CENTER THE VOICES, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCES OF THE INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND INSTITUTIONS MOST IMPACTED BY THE INEQUITIES CAUSED BY SYSTEMIC RACISM IN STEM FIELDS. THE EXPERIMENT IS CALLED THE MUON SCATTERING EXPERIMENT (MUSE) AND IS IN PROGRESS AT PAUL-SCHERRER INSTITUTE IN SWITZERLAND. THE SIZE OF THE PROTON IS A FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITY WITH CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY DUE TO CONFLICTING MEASUREMENTS BY VARIOUS METHODS. THE MUSE EXPERIMENT WILL MEASURE THE PROTON CHARGE RADIUS VIA LEPTON-PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING, AND IT WILL COMPARE THE INTERACTIONS OF MUONS AND ELECTRONS OF EITHER CHARGE WITH THE PROTON AT A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL. THE EXPERIMENT WILL SEVERELY CONSTRAIN POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS OF THE CONFLICTING RESULTS AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO REVEAL NEW PHYSICS BEYOND THE STANDARD MODEL. THE PROJECT OFFERS HIGH-PROFILE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND POSTDOCS AT A MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTION AT THE FOREFRONT OF INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE PHYSICS RESEARCH. THE MUSE EXPERIMENT IS UNDERWAY TO PROVIDE KEY INSIGHT IN THE QUEST TO EXPLAIN THE SO-CALLED PROTON RADIUS PUZZLE - THE OVER FIVE-STANDARD DEVIATION DISCREPANCY BETWEEN PROTON CHARGE RADIUS MEASUREMENTS WITH ELECTRONIC AND MUONIC PROBES, RESPECTIVELY. DESPITE RECENT PROGRESS REPORTED BY SPECTROSCOPY AND SCATTERING EXPERIMENTS, THE PUZZLE IS NOT NEARLY RESOLVED BUT HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF SYSTEMATIC UNCERTAINTIES. POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS OF THE PUZZLE ALSO INCLUDE NEW PHYSICS BEYOND THE STANDARD MODEL. THE MUSE EXPERIMENT AIMS TO ADDRESS ONE OF THE MOST PRESSING QUESTIONS IN NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE SCIENCE TO DATE. MUSE USES MIXED MUON AND ELECTRON BEAMS OF EITHER CHARGE (?+/E+, ??/E?) TO MAKE PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF THE LEPTON-PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING CROSS SECTIONS AND PROTON FORM FACTORS OVER A BROAD KINEMATIC RANGE, WITH THE GOAL TO EXTRACT THE PROTON CHARGE RADIUS FOR EACH PROBE. IT WILL DETERMINE WITH THE HIGHEST PRECISION, MODEL INDEPENDENTLY AND CONCLUSIVELY, IF THERE IS ANY PROTON CHARGE RADIUS DIFFERENCE OBSERVED IN ELECTRON VERSUS MUON SCATTERING. AT THE SAME TIME, IT WILL DETERMINE THE ROLE OF TWO-PHOTON EXCHANGE AND PROVIDE TIGHT CONSTRAINTS ON THEORY. THE GROUP SUPPORTED BY THIS AWARD PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HIGH-RESOLUTION BEAM PARTICLE TRACKING WITH GEM DETECTORS, IN A WAY NOT DONE BEFORE AT LOW BEAM ENERGIES. THE TRACKER IS EXPOSED TO HIGH RATE DENSITY AND BEAM FLUX, AND NEEDS TO OPERATE EFFICIENTLY AT A TRIGGER RATE OF A FEW KHZ. TO VERIFY THE USEFULNESS OF SABER DATA FOR TRENDING WE MONITOR PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS THAT WOULD INDICATE CHANGE IN THE LONG-TERM STABILITY OF THE SABER RADIOMETRIC CALIBRATION. THE MOST IMPORTANT CALIBRATION AFFECTING TRENDS IS ABSOLUTE RESPONSE STABILITY WHICH IS MONITORED BY TRACKING THE RADIANCE-PER-COUNT SCALE FACTOR AS A FUNCTION OF TIME. THIS QUANTITY IS OPERATIONALLY MONITORED BY ALTERNATELY VIEWING SPACE (COLD POINT) AND THE INSTRUMENT IN-FLIGHT CALIBRATOR (IFC) (WARM POINT). THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT ERROR CONTRIBUTORS ARE CHANGES IN IFC BLACKBODY EMISSIVITY AND DRIFT IN THE ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY USED TO MONITOR THE IFC TEMPERATURE. THE TEMPERATURE MONITOR DRIFT IS PREDICTED FROM PRE-LAUNCH INFORMATION TO BE VERY SMALL (<0.02K). THE TOTAL SCALE FACTOR CHANGES LINEARLY FIT OVER THE LIFE OF THE MISSION ARE SHOWN IN FIGURE 1 FOR ALL CHANNELS IN TERMS OF CHANGE RELATIVE TO THE BEGINNING OF THE MISSION.

THIS PARTNERSHIP, LED BY CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY, WITH ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY, COPPIN STATE UNIVERSITY, FAYETTEVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY, HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE, AND NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY, IS STRATEGICALLY DESIGNED TO TACKLE PERSISTENT NATIONAL CHALLENGES THAT LIMIT ACCESS TO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. BY ENHANCING THE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATIONAL CAPABILITIES ACROSS THESE INSTITUTIONS, THE PROJECT ALIGNS WITH THE U.S. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION'S MISSION TO PROMOTE THE PROGRESS OF SCIENCE AND CONTRIBUTE TO NATIONAL PROSPERITY AND WELFARE FOR ALL. THESE AREAS REPRESENT THE FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION IN SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY AND PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK FOR A TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATIONAL MODEL. BY LEVERAGING THE COMBINED STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES OF THE SEVEN PARTICIPATING HBCUS, THE PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD A COMPREHENSIVE NETWORK THAT ENHANCES THE COLLECTIVE RESEARCH CAPACITY AND EDUCATIONAL PROWESS OF THESE INSTITUTIONS. BRC-BIO: ESTUARINE FOOD WEB RESPONSES TO URBANIZATION AND RESTORATION -OYSTER REEFS ARE CRITICAL HABITATS THAT SERVE AS NURSERY GROUNDS FOR ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT SPECIES WHILE ALSO PROVIDING KEY ECOSYSTEM SERVICES SUCH AS SEDIMENT TRAPPING, WATER FILTRATION, AND REDUCTION OF COASTAL EROSION. YET, OYSTER REEFS HAVE DECLINED BY OVER 85% GLOBALLY IN RECENT YEARS. GIVEN THE URGENT NEED TO PROTECT AND RE-ESTABLISH OYSTER REEFS, A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESPONSE OF THESE FOOD WEBS TO URBANIZATION THREATS AND RESTORATION EFFORTS IS NEEDED. THIS RESEARCH WILL ASSESS THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF PREDATORY CRABS IN THE FOOD WEBS OF RESTORED VERSUS DEGRADED OYSTER REEF HABITATS. THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE RESILIENCE OF COASTAL SYSTEMS AND SHOULD INFORM FUTURE RESTORATION. THIS PROJECT FEATURES GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TRAINING, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMMERSIVE COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE) WHERE STUDENTS GAIN TRAINING IN FIELD ECOLOGY, DATA VISUALIZATION, AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION. FINDINGS FROM THIS RESEARCH WILL BE SHARED THROUGH ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS, PUBLIC OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, AND STUDENT TRAINING PROGRAMS TO MAXIMIZE IMPACT. THIS PROJECT IS CO-FUNDED BY THE BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY PROGRAM, POPULATION AND COMMUNITY ECOLOGY IN THE DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY, AND THE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (HBCU-UP), WHICH PROVIDES AWARDS TO STRENGTHEN STEM UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AT HBCUS. ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES ARE COMPRISED OF MANY SPECIES IN COMPLEX WEBS OF INTERACTIONS. THESE INTERACTIONS MAY VARY AMONG ENVIRONMENTS THAT DIFFER IN THERMAL REGIME AND ACROSS AN ENVIRONMENTAL GRADIENT OF INCREASING URBANIZATION. THIS PROJECT CONNECTS THREE AIMS TO DETERMINE HOW WARMING AND URBANIZATION INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH BODY SIZE OF CRAB PREDATORS TO AFFECT A SHIFT IN CRAB DIET WITH CASCADING EFFECTS TO THE TROPHIC, AND OVERALL COMMUNITY, STRUCTURES OF OYSTER REEFS IN ESTUARINE HABITATS. FIRST, MESOCOSM EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT TEMPERATURE AND CRAB BODY SIZE INTERACT TO INDUCE A SHIFT IN CRAB DIETS. A SECOND HYPOTHESIS WILL TEST THE STRENGTH OF PREDATION BY CRABS IN SITU USING MANIPULATIVE CAGING EXPERIMENTS ACROSS 8 PAIRED URBANIZED AND RURAL OYSTER REEFS IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY TO EVALUATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH URBANIZATION OF ESTUARINE SITES IMPACTS COMMUNITY STRUCTURE. THE THIRD HYPOTHESIS WILL TEST WHETHER URBANIZATION OF ESTUARIES INDUCES A SHIFT IN CRAB DIETS THAT CHANGES BOTH THE STRENGTH OF PREDATION AND THE NATURE OF ESTUARINE COMMUNITY TROPHIC STRUCTURE BY COMPARING STABLE ISOTOPE RATIOS AT 8 PAIRED RESTORED AND DEGRADED OYSTER REEFS. OUTCOMES OF TESTS OF THESE THREE HYPOTHESES WILL ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE AND LAND USE (URBANIZATION, HABITAT RESTORATION) AFFECT THE STRENGTH OF TOP-DOWN CONTROL OF COMMUNITY STRUCTURE THROUGH SHIFTS IN CONSUMER DIETS AND HOW ALTERED TROPHIC STRUCTURE MAY, IN TURN, INFLUENCE ECOSYSTEM RESILIENCE DIFFERENTLY IN RESTORED, UNMANIPULATED OR URBANIZED HABITATS. THE GOALS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO 1) BUILD COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE THAT FOCUSES ON EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING WITH HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION IN TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES RELATED TO MICROBIAL GENOMICS; 2) BRIDGE THREE SEQUENTIAL COURSES VIA EXTENDED COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (ECURE) WHERE STUDENTS WILL CONTRIBUTE MEANINGFUL DATA; 3) EMPOWER THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS IN MICROBIAL GENOMICS AND TO SUPPORT THIS POPULATION OF STUDENTS AS THEY ENTER THE STEM WORKFORCE; 4) PROVIDE FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO INTEGRATE CURRENT TRENDS IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING; AND 5) INTRODUCE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO NOTABLE AFRICAN AMERICAN (AND OTHER UNDERREPRESENTED) SCIENTISTS THROUGH A DEDICATED SEMINAR SERIES. OF NOTE, THE INTEGRATION OF MICROBIAL ENHANCEMENTS, PHYSIOLOGY AND GENOMICS VIA EXTENDED COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (ECURE) INTO THE UNDERGRADUATE STEM CURRICULUM WILL BETTER PREPARE UNDERGRADUATES, PRIMARILY AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS, FOR GRADUATE STUDY AND THE STEM WORKFORCE. THE FINDINGS FROM THIS PROJECT WILL SERVE AS A MODEL FOR OTHER HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AND 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS THAT SEEK TO EDUCATE AND MAINTAIN A DIVERSE STEM WORKFORCE IN MICROBIAL GENOMICS. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMPLEMENT CURRICULAR ENHANCEMENT IN CHEMISTRY BY INCORPORATING INNOVATIVE COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (CURES) INTO CHEMISTRY COURSES WHILE MODERNIZING THE FORENSIC CHEMISTRY LABORATORY AT HAMPTON UNIVERSITY. THE PROJECT AIMS TO ACCOMPLISH THIS GOAL BY 1) DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING CURES SEQUENCE FOR ANALYTICAL AND FORENSIC CHEMISTRY COURSES; 2) REVISING THE EXISTING SEMINAR COURSE TO INCORPORATE TOPICS THAT CONNECT CHEMISTRY TO REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS; AND 3) DEVELOPING A PILOT FORENSICS-THEMED ACTIVITY FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER GENERAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY. THE PROPOSED ACTIVITIES WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FOUNDATIONAL SKILL SETS TO SOLVE REAL-LIFE PRACTICAL SCENARIOS IN FORENSIC SCIENCE WHILE BUILDING TECHNICAL SKILLS TO INCREASE COMPETITIVENESS FOR GRADUATE EDUCATION. WE PROPOSE TO ANALYZE THE TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE AFTERMATH OF SATURN S 2010-2011 GREAT STORM USING IMAGES CAPTURED BY THE IMAGING SCIENCE SUBSYSTEM (ISS) AND VISUAL AND INFRARED MAPPING SPECTROMETER (VIMS) CAMERAS ONBOARD THE CASSINI ORBITER. THE INTENSE CUMULUS CONVECTION IN THE STORM LIFTED AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF MASS FROM THE WATER CONDENSATION LEVEL ESTIMATED TO BE AT A DEPTH OF 20 BAR TO THE UPPER TROPOSPHERIC ALTITUDES ABOVE 1 BAR. CASSINI S REMOTE-SENSING INSTRUMENTS DETECTED NUMEROUS CHANGES TRIGGERED BY THE STORM IN THE CLOUD MORPHOLOGY AND THERMAL STRUCTURE. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL ANALYZE THE VAST CLOUDLESS LATITUDE BAND LEFT BEHIND THE STORM. THE FORMATION OF THIS CLOUDLESS BAND IS SURPRISING BECAUSE A CUMULUS STORM TRANSPORTS SATURATED AIR UPWARD AND FORMS CLOUDS WHILE SUCH A CLEARING IS NORMALLY ASSOCIATED WITH SUBSIDENCE RATHER THAN UPWELLING. THROUGH OUR ANALYSIS OF THE RICH CASSINI DATASETS WE WILL PRODUCE A DETAILED RECORD OF WHEN AND WHERE THE STORM S CUMULUS CONVECTION RELEASED THE LIFTED MASS AND EXAMINE THE EXPANSION OF THE POST-STORM CLEARING UNTIL THE ENTIRE LATITUDINAL ZONE BECOMES CLOUDLESS. FURTHERMORE WE WILL EXTEND THE THEORETICAL FORMULATION FOR CYCLICAL GIANT STORMS HYPOTHESIZED BY LI AND INGERSOLL (2015) TO INCLUDE THE GRADUAL CLOUD CLEARING LIKE THAT OBSERVED BY SROMOVSKY ET AL. (2016). THE MOST RECENT STORM STARTED ON DECEMBER 5TH 2010 AND THE ACTIVE CUMULUS PHASE OF THE STORM ENDED IN AUGUST 2011. THE DYNAMICS OF THE STORM WAS DOCUMENTED IN NUMEROUS PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLES INCLUDING SAYANAGI ET AL. (2013 2014) AND SANCHEZ-LAVEGA ET AL. (2018). HOWEVER THE DISTURBANCE CAUSED BY THE STORM CONTINUED TO EVOLVE LONG AFTER THE ACTIVE CONVECTIVE PHASE UNTIL THE END OF CASSINI MISSION. THE TEMPORAL CHANGES COULD BE SEEN IN A WIDE RANGE OF WAVELENGTHS BETWEEN 5-MICRON CHANNEL OF VIMS AND THE 420 NM ISS FILTER. EVEN THOUGH THE TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE STORM S AFTERMATH EVOLVED THROUGHOUT THE CASSINI S SECOND EXTENDED MISSION (THE SOLSTICE MISSION ) ITS TEMPORAL EVOLUTION HAS NOT BEEN EXAMINED IN DETAIL. WE PROPOSE TO EXAMINE THE RICH DATASET RETURNED BY CASSINI ISS AND VIMS INSTRUMENTS TO CONDUCT A DETAILED INVESTIGATION OF THE TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE STORM S DYNAMIC AFTERMATH. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL CHARACTERIZE EMERGENCE AND GROWTH OF THE CLOUD-FREE REGION THAT APPEARED AT THE END OF THE ACTIVE CUMULUS PHASE OF THE STORM. THROUGH THESE ANALYSES WE WILL EXAMINE THE STORM S IMPACT ON THE ATMOSPHERIC VERTICAL THERMAL STRUCTURE WHICH IN TURN WILL HELP UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISM THAT DRIVES THE STORM AS WELL AS THE STORM S ROLE IN THE ENERGY BALANCE OF THE PLANET.

REU SITE: ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS AND DATA ANALYSIS AT HAMPTON UNIVERSITY -THE 8-WEEK SUMMER REU PROGRAM FOR 8 STUDENTS HOSTED BY HAMPTON UNIVERSITY IS AIMED PRIMARILY AT UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH CENTERED AROUND THE BROAD THEME ?MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF ATMOSPHERIC PROPERTIES.? REU STUDENTS WILL WORK WITH MENTORS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC AND PLANETARY SCIENCES, WITH SUPPORT FROM ITS ASSOCIATED RESEARCH CENTER, THE CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES. RESEARCH PROJECTS WILL INCLUDE SEVERAL BROAD THEMES. SATELLITE IMAGE ANALYSIS WILL BE APPLIED TO THE DETECTION OF FLOOD WATERS ON NORMALLY DRY LAND AND TO THE APPEARANCE AND GROWTH OF HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS IN LOCAL RIVERS. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY?S NSF-FUNDED OBSERVATORY WILL BE USED TO MONITOR THE ATMOSPHERES OF JUPITER, SATURN AND VENUS. GROUND-BASED INSTRUMENTS WILL BE USED TO MEASURE ATMOSPHERIC PROPERTIES FOR COMPARISON WITH SATELLITE MEASUREMENTS. STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE COLLECTION OF ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS FROM A VARIETY OF INSTRUMENTS, APPLY FUNDAMENTAL DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, DEVELOP BASIC RESEARCH SKILLS (LITERATURE REVIEW, INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION, DATA VALIDATION, MODEL FITTING, CODING), AND PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH TEAM TO DEVELOP COLLABORATION SKILLS (ACTIVE LISTENING, LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION, DELEGATION). THE STUDENTS WILL ALSO RECEIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING INCLUDING TOPICS SUCH AS PAPER AND PROPOSAL WRITING, PEER REVIEW, AND ORAL PRESENTATION SKILLS. THIS REU PROGRAM, BY INSTILLING CONFIDENCE IN UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY PARTICIPANTS IN THEIR PURSUIT OF STEM DEGREES AND CAREERS, WILL ENHANCE THE CONTRIBUTION OF HAMPTON UNIVERSITY TO THE DIVERSIFICATION OF THE NATION?S STEM WORKFORCE. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY HAS STATE OF THE ART ATMOSPHERIC INSTRUMENTATION. INSTRUMENTATION AVAILABLE INCLUDES MET SONDES, O3 SONDES, CIMEL PHOTOMETER, 48? MIE-RAMEN OPA DIAL, 48? MIE-RAMEN LIDAR, DOPPLER LIDAR, SCANNING LIDAR, AND PANDORA SPECTROPHOTOMETER. RESEARCH TOPICS STUDENTS MAY WORK ON ARE RELATED TO THREE MAJOR THEMES: 1. SATELLITE MISSION DESIGN, 2. OBSERVATIONAL ANALYSIS OF PLANETARY ATMOSPHERES, AND 3. CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF AEROSOL MEASUREMENTS. PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE EXPERIENCE ENHANCED BY VISITS TO THE VIRGINIA AIR AND SPACE CENTER AND THE VIRGINIA LIVING MUSEUM. MENTORS PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM WILL RECEIVE MENTOR TRAINING FROM THE HAMPTON UNIVERSITY FACULTY INSTITUTE PROGRAM. THE EFFORT IS A DIRECT RESPONSE TO THE BROAD INTEREST IN, AND TRANSFORMATIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR, BUILDING RESEARCH CAPACITY AT HBCUS. THESE INSTITUTIONS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY, INCREASE DIVERSITY IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, AND EXPAND THE STEM WORKFORCE. THE TEAM OF HBCUS WILL CONDUCT A META-SYNTHESIS OF LITERATURE ON RESOURCES AND BEST PRACTICES FOR A THRIVING RESEARCH ENTERPRISE AND DEVELOP A FRAMEWORK WITH RUBRICS FOR INSTITUTIONS TO CONDUCT A SELF-GUIDED ASSESSMENT OF THEIR RESEARCH CAPACITY TO INFORM PLANNING AND GROWTH STRATEGIES. FURTHER, THE TEAM WILL CREATE RUBRICS USING A PUBLISHED FRAMEWORK OF SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES FOR FACULTY INVESTIGATORS TO ASSESS THEIR SUCCESSFUL CAREER DEVELOPMENT.
