UPDATING DARWIN (DIGITAL ANALYSIS AND RECOGNITION OF WHALE IMAGES ON A NETWORK) TO SUSTAIN AND EXPAND ITS USE IN POPULATION ECOLOGY -BIOLOGISTS WHO STUDY NATURAL PHENOMENA SUCH AS POPULATION DYNAMICS, HABITAT USE, AND BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS NEED TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT THE NECESSARY ANALYSES. IN ADDITION TO GAINING A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SPECIES OF FOCUS, THESE STUDIES ARE IMPORTANT TO MONITOR CHANGES IN POPULATIONS AND IMPACTS OF HABITAT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION. A TYPICAL CATALOG OF PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED ANIMALS MAY CONTAIN HUNDREDS OR EVEN THOUSANDS OF IMAGES, SO THE PROCESS OF REIDENTIFYING INDIVIDUALS USING PHOTOGRAPHS IS A DAUNTING TASK. ACCESS TO SOFTWARE THAT PERFORMS THE IDENTIFICATION TASK EFFICIENTLY AND ACCURATELY ENABLES BIOLOGISTS TO FOCUS THEIR TIME ON THE ANALYSIS OF THE DATA. FOR DECADES, WILD DOLPHINS HAVE BEEN MONITORED USING MARKINGS ON THEIR DORSAL FINS, SIMILAR TO THE USE OF FINGERPRINTS TO RECOGNIZE A PERSON. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UPDATE AND EXPAND AN EXISTING SOFTWARE APPLICATION, DARWIN, THAT IDENTIFIES INDIVIDUAL DOLPHINS USING THE DORSAL FIN OUTLINE. DARWIN HAS ALSO SHOWN PROMISE FOR IDENTIFYING ALASKAN BROWN BEAR INDIVIDUALS USING THEIR FACIAL PROFILES AND HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR APPLICATION TO OTHER ANIMALS WITH NON-PATTERNED FUR. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO GAIN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE, THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO HOST WORKSHOPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS FOCUSED ON THE IMPORTANCE AND AUTOMATION OF IDENTIFYING INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS IN THE WILD. THE REIDENTIFICATION OF INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN A BOTTLENECK IN THE ANALYSIS OF FIELD DATA. THE USE OF HIGH-RESOLUTION DIGITAL CAMERAS AND AVAILABILITY OF INEXPENSIVE DATA STORAGE HAS CREATED AN EXPANSION OF DATA THAT HAS EXACERBATED THE PROBLEM. THIS PROJECT WILL MODERNIZE THE DARWIN SOFTWARE?S USER INTERFACE, ADD SUPPORT FOR THE LARGER FILES CREATED BY TODAY?S CAMERAS, AND INCORPORATE MACHINE LEARNING METHODS TO SIMPLIFY THE EXTRACTION OF ANIMAL OUTLINES AND IMPROVE REIDENTIFICATION ACCURACY. THE SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE WILL ALSO BE GENERALIZED TO SUPPORT REIDENTIFICATION IN SPECIES OTHER THAN DOLPHINS. THE IMPROVED METHODS FOR AUTOMATING THE RECOGNITION OF INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS OR OBJECTS, BASED UPON THEIR OUTLINES, WILL SERVE NOT ONLY BIOLOGISTS, BUT RESEARCHERS IN OTHER FIELDS, MORE BROADLY. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

THIS PROPOSAL WILL ADDRESS THREE CONSERVATION NEEDS FOR THE PECOS GAMBUSIA IN THE NEW MEXICO PORTION OF ITS RANGE. FIRST, AMONG THE MOST PRESSING THREATS TO THE PECOS GAMBUSIA IS HYBRIDIZATION WITH INVASIVE NEAR RELATIVES. THUS, A GENOMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF GAMBUSIA POPULATIONS IN NEW MEXICO IS LONG OVERDUE, AND IS DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY RELATED TO MANY PLAN TASKS OUTLINED IN THE SPECIES RECOVERY PLAN (RELEVANT PRIORITY ACTIONS: MONITOR POPULATIONS PRIORITY 2 REGULATE THE INTRODUCTION OF NOVEL FISHES INTO THE GAMBUSIA HABITAT PRIORITY 2 DETERMINE SYSTEMATIC RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN G. NOBILIS PRIORITY 3 REESTABLISH PECOS GAMBUSIA WITHIN PORTIONS OF ITS HISTORIC RANGE PRIORITY 3 PRECLUDE IMMIGRATION OF NOVEL FISHES PRIORITY 3 REMOVE EXOTIC FISHES PRIORITY 3 ). SECOND, APPLICATION OF N-MIXTURE MODELING WILL PROVIDE AN UNDERSTANDING OF POPULATION ABUNDANCE BETWEEN AND AMONG CURRENTLY OCCUPIED SITES AND INFORM THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ABUNDANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL COVARIATES AMONG HABITAT TYPES (RELEVANT PRIORITY ACTIONS: MONITOR POPULATIONS PRIORITY 2 STUDY ECOLOGICAL FACTORS PRIORITY 3 ). FINALLY, DELISTING THE PECOS GAMBUSIA CAN ONLY OCCUR IF CURRENT POPULATIONS ARE MAINTAINED OR AUGMENTED AND NEW POPULATIONS ARE ESTABLISHED. WE ARGUE THAT RECENTLY FORMED SINKHOLES COULD OFFER A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ESTABLISH NEW POPULATIONS OF THESE FISH AND PROVIDE GENETIC AND POPULATION REDUNDANCY OF EXTANT POPULATIONS. ESTABLISHING NEW POPULATIONS WILL REQUIRE IDENTIFYING AND MONITORING NEWLY FORMED AND UNOCCUPIED SINKHOLES FOR HABITAT SUITABILITY AND GENETIC AND ECOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF EXTANT POPULATIONS TO MAXIMIZE SUCCESS (RELEVANT PRIORITY ACTIONS: SURVEY HABITATS PRIOR TO REINTRODUCTION OF G. NOBILIS (PRIORITY 3) SELECT REINTRODUCTION SITES (PRIORITY 3)).
