HARRISIA ABORIGINUM WAS LISTED AS ENDANGERED IN 2013. CRITICAL HABITAT WAS DESIGNATED IN 2016 AT WHICH TIME ONLY 300 TO 500 INDIVIDUALS AND 12 POPULATIONS WERE KNOWN TO EXIST (USFWS 2016). SINCE 2019, MSBG HAS BEEN SURVEYING KNOWN POPULATIONS AND ASSESSING SURROUNDING HABITAT. THESE POPULATIONS ARE ALL AT RISK FROM INVASIVE AND WOODY SPECIES ENCROACHMENT, DEVELOPMENT, STORMS, AND SEA LEVEL RISE. TO IMPROVE HABITAT OF EXISTING POPULATIONS AS WELL AS TO CREATE NEW HABITAT FOR TRANSLOCATIONS, WE PROPOSE A COORDINATED EFFORT TO RESTORE AND MAINTAIN H. ABORIGINUM HABITAT, IMPROVE CONDITIONS AT KNOWN EXTANT SITES WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON HISTORIC STRONGHOLDS, AND CONDUCT POPULATION INTRODUCTIONS AND AUGMENTATIONS OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS ON PROTECTED LANDS, BEGINNING WITH SARASOTA COUNTY.
