COWAN COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP WILL SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION AND CREATE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN COALFIELD COMMUNITIES IN EASTERN KENTUCKY. THE PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH A FUNCTIONAL COALITION TO PROMOTE THE APPLICATION OF REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PRACTICES IN AREAS IMPACTED BY SURFACE MINING ALONGSIDE THE DEVELOPMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF A REGIONALLY SPECIFIC SITE ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST. THIS CHECKLIST WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY AND CHARACTERIZE FOUR PROSPECTIVE REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING SITES DETAILING THEIR ASSETS CAPABILITIES AND GAPS. THE COALITION AND SITE ASSESSMENTS WILL RESULT IN A THOROUGH CHARACTERIZATION OF THESE SITES SUPPORTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES. THE ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES INCLUDE A STRENGTHENED LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM PROVIDING INCREASED ACCESS TO FOOD FOR FARMERS AND CONSUMERS AS WELL AS NEW ECONOMIC PROSPECTS FOR PRODUCERS AND THOSE EXPERIENCING UNEMPLOYMENT WITHIN APPALACHIAN COALIMPACTED COMMUNITIES.
