MEMORIAL POOLS ENERGY EFFICIENCY RETROFITS - THE INTERIOR PERIMETER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE NORTH AND SOUTH MEMORIAL POOLS ARE LINED WITH LIGHT FIXTURES THAT ILLUMINATE THE POOLS AT NIGHT. THE CURRENT LIGHTS HAVE BEEN IN USE SINCE THE MEMORIAL OPENED IN SEPTEMBER 2011, AND THE BULBS ARE NEARING THE END OF THEIR LIFESPAN. THE CURRENT BULBS WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW LEDS THAT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE ENERGY USAGE; THE NEW BULBS WILL ALSO BE MORE RELIABLE AND LONGER LASTING. SIX SIDES OF THE MEMORIAL POOLS WILL BE RETROFITTED WITH NEW LED LIGHT STRIPS BY SEPTEMBER 2026.

TELLING THE STORY: 9/11 AND THE NEXT GENERATION [AS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 APPROACHES, THE 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM RECOGNIZES ITS RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A FACT-BASED, COMPREHENSIVE NARRATIVE OF THE ATTACKS TO A POST-9/11 GENERATION, BORN AFTER THE EPOCHAL EVENT THAT HAS SHAPED MUCH OF AMERICAN LIFE FOR TWO DECADES. THROUGH THE EXPANSION OF ITS DIGITAL PROGRAMS, THE MUSEUM PROVIDES EDUCATOR-GUIDED ACCESS TO ITS PHYSICAL SITE, EXTENSIVE CORE MATERIALS FOR PRE- AND POST-VISIT ASSIGNMENTS, AND TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IN INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING AROUND DIFFICULT 9/11-RELATED ISSUES. THESE PROGRAMS ARE SHAPED AROUND HUMANITIES CONCERNS OF NARRATIVE CONSTRUCTION, REPRESENTATION OF VOICE AND CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF HISTORICAL NARRATIVE.] [PURPOSE: GRANT FUNDS WOULD ENABLE THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM TO SUPPORT THE RETENTION OF STAFF AND TO ENABLE THEM TO EXPAND THEIR DIGITAL EDUCATIONAL AND TEACHER-TRAINING RESOURCES. THESE RESOURCES WOULD OFFER CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AND THE TWIN TOWERS, THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 9/11 ATTACKS, AND THE RECOVERY AND MEMORIALIZATION PROCESS. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: STAFF AND SCHOLARS WOULD COLLABORATE TO CREATE VIRTUAL EDUCATOR-GUIDED ACCESS TO ITS PHYSICAL SITE, EXTENSIVE CORE MATERIALS FOR PRE- AND POST-VISIT ASSIGNMENTS, AND TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IN INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING AROUND DIFFICULT 9/11-RELATED ISSUES. THEIR WORK WOULD FOCUS ON NARRATIVE CONSTRUCTION, REPRESENTATION OF VOICE, AND CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF HISTORICAL NARRATIVES. INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: LOCAL AND NATIONAL EDUCATORS WOULD BE THE TARGET AUDIENCES. SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES:?THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.]

PRESERVING PLASTICS: ASSESSING PLASTICS DETERIORATION + 9/11 DISASTER RESPONSE COLLECTION [THE 9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM WILL UNDERTAKE AN IMPLEMENTATION PHASE OF A TWO-PART STEWARDSHIP PROJECT FOR ALL PLASTIC AND PLASTIC-CONTAINING ARTIFACTS IN THE COLLECTION. THIS INCLUDES TESTING AND CLEARING OF CONTAMINATED ARTIFACTS, VISUAL PLASTIC IDENTIFICATION, AND DIGITAL 3D MODELING AND REHOUSING OF THE MOST AT-RISK OBJECTS. A COMPREHENSIVE CONDITION ASSESSMENT WILL ALLOW THE MUSEUM TO MINIMIZE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT AND IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES THAT WILL GUIDE FUTURE COLLECTIONS ACTIVITIES. THIS PROJECT IS PARTICULARLY RESONANT FOR THESE HUMAN-LINKED OBJECTS, MOST WITH DIRECT PERSONAL CONNECTIONS TO 9/11 VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS AND MANY, REPRESENTING THE LAST REMAINING TRACE OF PEOPLE WHOSE REMAINS WERE NEVER RECOVERED. THE COMPOUNDED ISSUES OF PLASTIC DEGRADATION AND OBJECTS WHICH CONVEY THE CONTEXTUAL TRAUMA OF MASS VIOLENCE AND PHYSICAL CATASTROPHE COMPRISE AN UNDER-RESEARCHED AREA OF DISASTER RESPONSE COLLECTIONS LIKELY TO BECOME MORE PREVALENT.]

TO ACCOMPANY THE EXHIBITION, STAFF WILL CONDUCT EDUCATIONAL PUBLIC PROGRAMMING. BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE MULTIGENERATIONAL AUDIENCES, EDUCATORS, ADULT VISITORS WHO WERE CHILDREN ON 9/11, AND YOUTH VISITORS.

SLURRY WALL PRESERVATION: INVESTIGATING SUSTAINABLE WATER MITIGATION DRAINAGE SYSTEMS [THE 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM WILL INVESTIGATE SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS TO MITIGATE WATER ACCUMULATION ALONG THE SLURRY WALL, THE LARGEST ARTIFACT IN THE MUSEUM. THE WALL IS A ROUGHLY 60 FEET X 60 FEET PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL RETAINING WALL BUILT AROUND THE WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE IN THE 1960S TO HOLD BACK THE HUDSON RIVER AND ALLOW FOR EXCAVATION. WHEN THE TWIN TOWERS COLLAPSED ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, THE WALL HELD, PREVENTING FURTHER DAMAGE FROM THE FLOODING OF LOWER MANHATTAN. IT HAS TAKEN ON A SYMBOLIC STATUS REFLECTING THE FORTITUDE OF AMERICANS AND IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE MUSEUM?S VISITOR EXPERIENCE. ALTHOUGH IT NO LONGER SERVES ITS ORIGINAL STRUCTURAL INTENT, ITS BIGGEST THREAT IS WATER FROM THE HUDSON RIVER WHICH CONTINUALLY INFILTRATES THROUGH THE CONCRETE STRUCTURE. THE GRANT WILL INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF UPGRADING THE CURRENT PASSIVE WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE ONE OR IF IT IS NECESSARY TO MOVE TO AN ACTIVE PUMP SYSTEM FOR LONG-TERM PRESERVATION.]
