PROJECT PURPOSE:THE TALLADEGA COLLEGE "REALIZING FUTURE PROOF TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN TALLADEGA COLLEGE'S STUDENTS, FACULTY AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITY IN RURAL ALABAMA" PROJECT AIMS TO CREATE A TRUE BROADBAND NETWORK THAT WILL PROVIDE INTERNET SERVICES ACROSS THE COLLEGE'S CAMPUS AS WELL AS PROVIDE ACCESS TO TRUE BROADBAND TO THE ANCHOR COMMUNITIES OF THE CITY OF TALLADEGA AND PORTIONS OF TALLADEGA COUNTY. FURTHER, THIS PROJECT WILL INCREASE IT STAFFING TO ADDRESS THE CONNECTIVITY AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY RELATED PROBLEMS ON CAMPUS TO BETTER SERVE THE STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY.ACTIVITIES:THIS PROJECT WILL BE COMPLETED THROUGH THE THREE PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES. FIRST, TALLADEGA COLLEGE WILL CONDUCT A COMPREHENSIVE BROADBAND TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND CURRENT GAPS IN CAPABILITY AND TO CREATE A LONG-TERM TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP AND STRATEGIC PLAN. SECOND, WITH THE ASSESSMENT IN HAND, THE COLLEGE WILL DESIGN, DEPLOY AND INSTALL THE BROADBAND NETWORK. THIRD, THE COLLEGE WILL GROW AND EXPAND TALLADEGA'S COLLEGE BASE OF IT, AV, DATABASE PERSONNEL BY HIRING ADDITIONAL EMPLOYEES.OUTCOMES:ONCE COMPLETED, THE BROADBAND NETWORK DESIGN AND DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A ROBUST, ECONOMICALLY VIABLE SOLUTION THAT CAN DELIVER MUCH-NEEDED INTERNET ACCESS TO TALLADEGA COLLEGE AND AREAS IN THE COMMUNITY WHERE INTERNET ACCESS IS LIMITED OR NOT RELIABLE. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO PROVIDE TALLADEGA COLLEGE WITH LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND DELIVERY SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO POSITION THE COLLEGE TO PROVIDE FUTURE SERVICES TO RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES IN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY TO HELP FOSTER COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT. WITH THE CONNECTING MINORITY COMMUNITY (CMC) GRANT FUNDING FOR THIS PROJECT, TALLADEGA COLLEGE WILL BE POSITIONED TO BECOME THE HUB OF TECHNOLOGY SERVICES AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BROADER COMMUNITY ALLOWING THE COLLEGE TO DEVELOP MORE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, SERVICE AND OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, ONLINE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, TO BRING CONNECTIVITY THAT ALLOWS MORE RELIABLE ACCESS TO TELEHEALTH SERVICES, AND TO ENHANCE AND ELEVATE DISTANCE LEARNING AND REMOTE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO THE CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY.BENEFICIARIES:THIS PROJECT WILL BENEFIT LOW INCOME STUDENTS AT TALLADEGA COLLEGE. ACCESS TO FASTER AND MORE RELIABLE INTERNET SERVICE WILL HELP FAMILIES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUAL LEARNING AND ATTRACT MORE COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT TO THE REGION. THIS INCLUDES THE 53% MINORITY POPULATION AND 50% LOW TO MODERATE INCOME POPULATION OF THE CITY OF TALLADEGA, ALABAMA.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES (IF APPLICABLE):THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.

THE CSC INITIATIVE FOCUSES ON BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF THESE INSTITUTIONS TO ESTABLISH CULTURALLY RELEVANT STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING, INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE RESPONSE PROTOCOLS AND PREVENTION PROGRAMMING. TALLADEGA COLLEGE IS A PRIVATE, FOUR-YEAR, HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY (HBCU) LOCATED IN TALLADEGA, AL. WITH THIS NEW AWARD, TALLADEGA COLLEGE, IN COLLABORATION WITH ITS CAMPUS PARTNERS, WILL CREATE CULTURALLY SPECIFIC STRATEGIES TAILORED TO STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY AND WORK WITH THE DESIGNATED CAMPUS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROVIDER TO: 1) BUILD THE CAPACITY OF THE INSTITUTION TO DEVELOP A CULTURALLY SPECIFIC, COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO ADDRESS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING BY SECURING RELEVANT PARTNERSHIPS, CONDUCTING TRAININGS, AND DEVELOPING RESOURCES TAILORED TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY; 2) DEVELOP AN ACTION PLAN TO OUTLINE KEY STRATEGIES NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH A COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE; AND 3) ESTABLISH A COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE TEAM THAT WILL OVERSEE AND IMPLEMENT PROJECT ACTIVITIES.

TARGETED INFUSION PROJECT: TALLADEGA EARLY RESEARCH FOR UNDERGRADUATES (ERU) IN STEM PROGRAM -THE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (HBCU-UP) THROUGH TARGETED INFUSION PROJECTS SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, AND STUDY OF EVIDENCE-BASED, INNOVATIVE MODELS AND APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING THE PREPARATION AND SUCCESS OF HBCU UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS SO THAT THEY MAY PURSUE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, OR MATHEMATICS (STEM) GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND/OR CAREERS. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE GRADUATION AND RETENTION RATES AT TALLADEGA COLLEGE BY PROVIDING EARLY EXPOSURE TO UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, STRATEGIC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO INCOMING STUDENTS, PROMOTING ENHANCED LEARNING AND PERSONAL GROWTH. THE PROJECT'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE BASED ON EVIDENCE-BASED LEARNING METHODS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE STUDENT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. KEY COMPONENTS INCLUDE A TWO-WEEK EARLY ARRIVAL ORIENTATION, MENTORING ON TRANSITIONING FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE, INTRODUCTIONS TO STEM MAJORS AND CAREERS, PRESENTATIONS BY TALLADEGA PROFESSORS AND GUEST SPEAKERS FROM NATIONAL LABS AND INDUSTRY, AND ENGAGEMENT IN SHORT-TERM RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. IN ADDITION, WEEKLY MENTORING SESSIONS WILL PROVIDE ONGOING ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT. THE SOCIETAL BENEFITS WILL BE REALIZED AS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND REFLECTION WORKSHOPS TO ASSESS THEIR INTELLECTUAL GROWTH, ACADEMIC BEHAVIORS, AND RESEARCH SKILLS. THE PROJECT WILL ASSESS ITS IMPACT ON STUDENT RETENTION, GRADUATION, AND CAREER OUTCOMES, WITH THE GOAL OF ESTABLISHING A MODEL PROGRAM FOR EARLY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH. AN EXTERNAL CONSULTING GROUP WILL ALSO ASSIST IN DEVELOPING EVALUATION PLANS AND METRICS TO MEASURE THE PROGRAM'S EFFICACY, ENSURING THAT IT EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTES TO THE FIELD OF STEM EDUCATION AND BROADENS PARTICIPATION AMONG UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. ULTIMATELY, THIS INITIATIVE WILL POTENTIALLY INCREASE RETENTION RATES AND GRADUATION RATES AT TALLADEGA COLLEGE, CONTRIBUTING TO THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY BROADENING AND FOSTERING A SKILLED STEM WORKFORCE. THE HISTORIC MURALS, PAINTED BY AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTIST HALE WOODRUFF, ILLUSTRATE CAPTURED AFRICANS IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY, QUEST FOR FREEDOM AND REPATRIATION, AND STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION, EDUCATIONAL ENLIGHTENMENT, AND EQUALITY. THE PROJECT ALSO WILL IDENTIFY, INVENTORY, ASSESS, CATALOG, DIGITIZE, AND PRESERVE 400 ARTIFACTS FOR USE IN ENHANCING THE AMISTAD MURAL EXHIBITION. PROJECT STAFF WILL CREATE AN ONLINE SEARCHABLE REPOSITORY OF THE COLLECTIONS AND MAKE THE NEWLY DIGITIZED MATERIALS MORE ACCESSIBLE AS THEMATICALLY ORGANIZED RESOURCES COMPATIBLE WITH K-12 STATE EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS.
