REMOTE SENSING PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN LONG-TERM MONITORING OF BIODIVERSITY ACROSS SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL SCALES AND TECHNOLOGICAL AND ANALYTICAL ADVANCES ARE COMBINING TO BROADEN POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS FOCUSED ON ANIMAL DIVERSITY. IN PARTICULAR LIDAR PROVIDES MEASUREMENTS OF 3D VERTICAL VEGETATION STRUCTURE RELATED TO ANIMAL HABITAT AND ORGANISMAL AND FUNCTIONAL DIVERSITY. IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY CAN DETECT CANOPY FOLIAR CHEMISTRY SPECTRAL-CHEMICAL DIVERSITY RELATED TO PLANT FUNCTIONAL AND FLORISTIC DIVERSITY AND MAP PLANT SPECIES AND LAND COVER VARIABLES RELATED TO ANIMAL HABITAT. THE SYNERGY OF SPACE-BASED IMAGING SPECTROMETER AND LIDAR SENSORS HAS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING LEADING THE 2017-2027 DECADAL SURVEY FOR EARTH SCIENCE AND APPLICATIONS FROM SPACE TO RECOMMEND THESE SENSORS AS HIGH-PRIORITY MISSIONS. SPATIAL MODELS THAT CHARACTERIZE ASPECTS OF BIODIVERSITY SUCH AS SPECIES DISTRIBUTIONS OR RICHNESS FROM REMOTE SENSING PREDICTOR VARIABLES NEED EXTENSIVE AND REPRESENTATIVE IN SITU SPECIES DATA FOR CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION. CITIZEN SCIENCE (CS) WHERE PUBLIC VOLUNTEERS ARE ENLISTED IN SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN COLLECTING LARGE AMOUNTS OF IN SITU SPECIES PRESENCE DATA WHILE ENGAGING THE PUBLIC IN SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. IN ADDITION NEW LOW-COST TECHNOLOGY FOR AUTOMATED SPECIES IDENTIFICATION THROUGH SOUND RECORDINGS (BIOACOUSTICS) IN COMBINATION WITH CS MAY FURTHER INCREASE SPECIES OBSERVATIONS. SOUNDSCAPES TO LANDSCAPES (S2L) SEEKS TO ADVANCE ANIMAL DIVERSITY MONITORING FROM NEXT-GENERATION AND EXISTING EARTH-OBSERVING SATELLITES. DRIVEN BY CS COMPOSED OF STUDENTS BIRDER WATCHERS AND LANDOWNERS THE PROJECT USES SOUND RECORDINGS FROM FIELD SITES AND A CLOUD-BASED BIOACOUSTICS ANALYSIS PLATFORM TO IDENTIFY BIRD SPECIES BY THEIR CALLS AND THEN PREDICT THEIR PRESENCE AT SITES. WE ENGAGE CS WITH FIELD CAMPAIGNS THAT DEPLOY RECORDERS TO SITES ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LANDS THROUGH A SERIES OF ?BIRD BLITZ? WORKSHOPS FOR BIOACOUSTICS WORK AND CALL IDENTIFICATION MODELING FOR MOTIVATED BIRD ENTHUSIASTS. THE S2L SCIENCE TEAM USES CS BIOACOUSTICS-BASED BIRD DATA IN A UNIFIED ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK TO EXPLORE THE BENEFITS AND TRADE-OFFS IN SPACEBORNE IMAGING SPECTROMETER LIDAR AND EXISTING LAND IMAGERS FOR SPATIAL MODELING OF AVIAN DIVERSITY AND USE OF PRODUCTS IN CONSERVATION PLANNING. THE PROJECT HAS FOUR MAIN GOALS: 1) INVOLVE CITIZEN SCIENTISTS IN THE COLLECTION OF FIELD INFORMATION ON BIRD DIVERSITY THROUGH BIOACOUSTICS 2) ASSESS THE ACCURACY AND PRECISION OF BIOACOUSTICS FOR THE DETECTION AND MONITORING OF INDIVIDUAL SPECIES AND RICHNESS 3) TEST THE POTENTIAL OF SPACEBORNE HYPERSPECTRAL LIDAR SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR (SAR) AND MULTISPECTRAL OPTICAL SENSORS FOR SPATIAL MODELING OF SPECIES OCCUPANCY AND OVERALL SPECIES RICHNESS AND 4) USE OCCUPANCY/RICHNESS MAPS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND FACTORS RELATED TO CONSERVING ANIMAL DIVERSITY AND IDENTIFY THOSE AREAS IN THE LANDSCAPE WITH COMPLEMENTARY SOCIETAL VALUE (E.G. CARBON STORAGE). WE FOCUS OUR INVESTIGATION IN SONOMA COUNTY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AN AREA WITH A DIVERSE RANGE OF NATURAL VEGETATION URBAN AND AGRICULTURAL GRADIENTS RECENT FIRE DISTURBANCE AS WELL AS A RICH SUITE OF REMOTE SENSING DATA. THE INVESTIGATION INCLUDES SPACEBORNE LIDAR (GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM DYNAMICS INVESTIGATION LIDAR - GEDI) AND IMAGING SPECTROMETER (HYPERSPECTRAL INFRARED IMAGER - HYSPIRI) SENSORS SIMULATED FROM AIRBORNE SENSORS AND MULTI-SEASONAL SAR AND MULTISPECTRAL OPTICAL SENSORS ON EXISTING SATELLITES (E.G. LANDSAT SENTINELS). WE USE DATA FROM THESE SENSORS ENVIRONMENTAL SPATIAL PREDICTORS BIOACOUSTICS-BASED SPECIES PRESENCE/ABSENCE AND STATISTICAL AND MODELING ANALYSES TO ASSESS THE RELATIVE STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES AND SYNERGIES OF CURRENT AND FUTURE REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY FOR PREDICTING THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF INDIVIDUAL AVIAN SPECIES AND OVERALL RICHNESS ACROSS A RANGE OF ECOSYSTEMS.

CYBERTRAINING: IMPLEMENTATION: MEDIUM: CHEMCOMPUTE: COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY FOR UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH -COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY METHODS, AS IMPLEMENTED IN MULTIPLE ACADEMIC SOFTWARE PACKAGES, ARE ESSENTIAL SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS USED BY BOTH ACADEMIC AND COMMERCIAL SECTOR RESEARCH CHEMISTS. HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE SOFTWARE PACKAGES ARE COMPUTATIONALLY DEMANDING AND MUST BE EXECUTED ON HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTERS, INTRODUCING A SIGNIFICANT BARRIER TO THEIR USE IN UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING AND RESEARCH. BUILDING ON OVER A DECADE OF PRIOR EFFORTS, THIS PROJECT OVERCOMES THIS BARRIER THROUGH THE INTEGRATION OF THE CHEMCOMPUTE SCIENCE GATEWAY INTO MULTIPLE COURSE OFFERINGS AND THROUGH THE DISTRIBUTION OF REUSABLE COURSE MATERIALS THAT INTEGRATE COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY METHODS INTO INSTRUCTION. CHEMCOMPUTE PROVIDES WEB-BASED ACCESS TO ACADEMIC COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY SOFTWARE DEPLOYED ON NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION-FUNDED HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING RESOURCES ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO PROVIDE FREE ACCESS TO COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY TOOLS TO STUDENTS. THIS CYBERTRAINING PROJECT WILL USE CHEMCOMPUTE AS A RESOURCE TO TRAIN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH BY DEVELOPING A COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE) AT PARTICIPATING UNIVERSITIES AND TRAIN FACULTY ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO USE THE SITE FOR THEIR CLASSES AND UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH. IN SUPPORT OF THESE EFFORTS, THE CHEMCOMPUTE GATEWAY WILL UNDERGO ACCESSIBILITY ENHANCEMENTS TO IMPROVE ACCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS AND WILL ALSO ENHANCE ITS CAPABILITIES IN ORDER TO SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT FURTHERMORE WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY OF UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTORS AND THE CREATION OF ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR BOTH EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY. CHEMCOMPUTE (CHEMCOMPUTE.ORG) OFFERS FREE CLOUD-BASED COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES TO UNDERGRADUATE CHEMISTRY STUDENTS TO FACILITATE COMPUTATIONAL EXPERIMENTS IN ADVANCED TOPICS IN QUANTUM MECHANICS, MOLECULAR DYNAMICS AND JUPYTER NOTEBOOK-BASED DATA ANALYSIS. SINCE 2014 OVER 110,000 STUDENTS HAVE PERFORMED 650,000 COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY JOBS USING NSF-PROVIDED XSEDE AND ACCESS SUPERCOMPUTER RESOURCES THROUGH CHEMCOMPUTE. THIS WORK IMPROVES THE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE SITE, EXPANDS CAPABILITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, DEVELOPS NEW CURRICULUM, AND CREATES A COMMUNITY OF FACULTY USING THE SITE. COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (CURES) ARE DEVELOPED WHERE UNDERGRADUATE CHEMISTRY STUDENTS CONDUCT NOVEL RESEARCH ON COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY PROJECTS OR PROJECTS COMBINING BOTH EXPERIMENT AND THEORY. DATA ARE COLLECTED ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF THE PROJECT ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND CONFIDENCE IN USING COMPUTERS TO SOLVE CHEMICAL PROBLEMS. FACULTY WORKSHOPS CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CONTENT FOR TEACHING COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY AND THE CREATION OF A USER COMMUNITY. DISSEMINATION OF THE WEBSITE CAPABILITIES THROUGH WORKSHOPS AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS, WITH A FOCUS ON MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS, EXPOSES MORE STUDENTS TO COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY RESEARCH. THROUGH THIS PROJECT, STUDENTS DEVELOP COMPUTATIONAL SKILLS VALUED IN GRADUATE STUDIES AND IN THE WORKFORCE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

CHROMOSOME ORGANIZATION IN DEVELOPMENT AND ADULTHOOD - PROJECT SUMMARY THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THE STUDY IS TO UNCOVER HOW HUMAN SOMATIC CELLS REGULATE PROPER CHROMOSOME ORGANIZATION DURING DEVELOPMENT. WHILE PAIRING OF HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES CAN DRIVE MEIOTIC RECOMBINATION, MITOTIC PAIRING CAN LEAD TO DETRIMENTAL CONSEQUENCES SUCH AS ALLELIC MIS-REGULATION AND GENOME INSTABILITY IN HUMANS. HOWEVER, IT REMAINS LARGELY UNKNOWN HOW MITOTIC PAIRING AND RECOMBINATION, IS PREVENTED IN SOMATIC CELLS TO AVOID GENOMIC INSTABILITY DURING CONTINUOUS CELLULAR DIVISION IN DEVELOPMENT. WE HAVE RECENTLY REVEALED THAT: (A) DIVIDING HUMAN PRIMARY CELLS KEEP TWO HAPLOID CHROMOSOME SETS APART TO EITHER SIDE OF THE CENTROSOME, OR NUCLEAR DIVISION AXIS; (B) A DIMINISHED ZONE, DEVOID OF INTERCHROMOSOMAL LINKAGE COMPONENTS, IS PRESENT ALONG THE CENTROSOME AXIS, FORMING THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TWO HAPLOID SETS; (C) SIMULTANEOUS TRACKING OF INDIVIDUAL CHROMOSOME OSCILLATION AND THE SPINDLE AXIS, DEMONSTRATES IPSILATERAL RESTRICTION OF CHROMOSOME MOVEMENT OF TWO CHROMOSOME SETS FROM MITOSIS ONSET TO G1 INTERPHASE; (D) HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGING OF A TRANSLOCATION MOUSE WITH A SUPERNUMERARY CHROMOSOME REVEALS THAT A MATERNALLY DERIVED CHROMOSOME IS POSITIONED TO A HAPLOID SET BASED ON PARENTAL ORIGIN; AND (E) THIS HAPLOID SET-BASED ANTI-PAIRING MOTIF IS LOST IN RENAL CARCINOMA CELLS. THESE FINDINGS REVEAL A NEW MODEL WHEREIN SOMATIC CELLS IMPEDE HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOME PAIRING BY KEEPING TWO HAPLOID CHROMOSOME SETS APART ALONG A DIMINISHED ZONE OF INTERCHROMOSOMAL LINKAGE COMPONENTS, COINCIDENT WITH THE CENTROSOME AXIS. THE MODEL PREDICTS THAT COMPARTMENTALIZATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL HAPLOID SETS FROM EACH OTHER REQUIRE BIOPHYSICAL INTER-CHROMOSOMAL LINKAGE PROPERTIES WITHIN A HAPLOID SET, ALONG WITH AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE TWO HAPLOID SETS. ANTI-PAIRING OF HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES IS ESSENTIAL FOR GENETIC STABILITY AND FUNCTION IN HUMAN CELLS, THUS, WE PREDICT THAT THE SPATIAL SEGREGATION OF HAPLOID SETS IS CONSERVED AMONG ALL CELL TYPES. OUR PROPOSAL AIMS TO EXPERIMENTALLY TEST THESE HYPOTHESES. ENGAGING COMMUNITY COLLEGES STUDENTS THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL, PRE-TRANSFER SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS TRACK 1 PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A COLLABORATION BETWEEN SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY (SSU), A FOUR-YEAR PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, AND TWO COMMUNITY COLLEGES, MENDOCINO COLLEGE AND SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE, TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AT SSU PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR TRANSFER. TRANSFER STUDENTS CAN FACE A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES AS THEY MOVE TO 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS, WHICH CAN HINDER SUCCESS IN STEM DISCIPLINES. THE PROJECT WILL BRING TWO COHORTS OF TEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS EACH YEAR FOR A FIVE-WEEK RESIDENTIAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO TAKE PART IN PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TO BUILD A STRONG COHORT AND PROMOTE STUDENTS? SENSE OF BELONGING. EXISTING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENT (MESA) PROGRAMS AT ALL THREE INSTITUTIONS WILL ALLOW THE PROJECT TO RECRUIT DIVERSE PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS AND STUDENTS FROM POPULATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM. COMMUNITY COLLEGES GENERALLY SERVE MORE DIVERSE POPULATIONS THAN 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS, YET AT MANY INSTITUTIONS NATIONWIDE, STUDENTS FROM MINORITY POPULATIONS OFTEN TRANSFER AT LOWER RATES THAN THEIR PEERS. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IS A HIGH-IMPACT PRACTICE THAT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO PROVIDE A RICH, ENGAGING EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS THAT CAN DRIVE GREATER EQUITY IN STUDENT RETENTION AND OVERALL SUCCESS. THIS PROJECT WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE BY EXPLORING HOW A 5-WEEK, PRE-TRANSFER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE THAT INCLUDES COHORT BUILDING ACTIVITIES IMPACTS THE SENSE OF BELONGING AND STEM SELF-EFFICACY OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO COLLECT DATA ON HOW THE PROJECT MODEL CONTRIBUTES TO STUDENTS? LATER DECISION TO TRANSFER AND PURSUE A 4-YEAR DEGREE. THE CORE PROJECT MODEL WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW 2- AND 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS CAN COLLABORATE TO INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND PERSISTENCE IN STEM. PROJECT EVALUATION WILL USE STUDENT AND FACULTY DATA TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECT COMPONENTS WHILE EXAMINING THE SCALABILITY OF THE PROJECT MODEL WITH AN EYE TOWARDS FUTURE EXPANSION. THE HSI PROGRAM AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION, BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND BUILD CAPACITY AT HSIS. ACHIEVING THESE AIMS, GIVEN THE DIVERSE NATURE AND CONTEXT OF HSIS, REQUIRES INNOVATIVE APPROACHES THAT INCENTIVIZE INSTITUTIONAL AND COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION AND PROMOTE FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH (I) ON ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING, (II) ABOUT WHAT IT TAKES TO DIVERSIFY AND INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN STEM EFFECTIVELY, AND (III) THAT IMPROVES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO BUILD INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY, MORE GENERALLY, AT HSIS. THIS PROJECT STUDIES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BAER PLANNING FOR CULTURAL RESOURCES IN THE PACIFIC WEST REGION IR 8 9 10 12 WITH THE AIM OF DEVELOPING PROTOCOLS OR TOOLS FOR CONSIDERATION DURING POSTWILDLAND FIRE RECOVERY EFFORTS. THIS PROJECT ALSO ADDRESSES THE SHORTFALL IN SITE DOCUMENTATION FOR BURNED AREAS. THE OUTCOMES FROM THIS PROJECT WILL PRODUCE STORY MAPS THAT DOCUMENT THE LOSS OF IMPORTANT CULTURAL RESOURCES AT THE PARKS AND WILL VERIFY SITE CONDITION AND LANDFORM STABILITY AT KNOWN SITES IN THE AREAS SURVEYED. THIS WORK IS CRITICAL BECAUSE, ALTHOUGH FIELD LEARNING IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST-IMPACT TEACHING PRACTICES, THE CAPACITY FOR INSTRUCTORS TO PROVIDE FIELD LEARNING IS LIMITED DUE TO COST AND TIME. THESE LIMITATIONS ARE PARTICULARLY STRONG AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND COLLEGES THAT LACK SUITABLE FIELD SITES NEARBY. MOREOVER, CONVENTIONAL FIELD LEARNING MAY EXCLUDE STUDENTS WHOSE FAMILY OR WORK OBLIGATIONS DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO JOIN A FIELD TRIP OUTSIDE OF NORMAL CLASS TIME. FIELD LOCATIONS ALSO MAY NOT ALLOW STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES TO FULLY PARTICIPATE. EXISTING RESEARCH INTO VFES SHOWS THAT THEY CAN BE AS EFFECTIVE AS IN-PERSON FIELD EXPERIENCES AT IMPROVING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE, BUT IT IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER VFES ARE SIMILARLY EFFECTIVE IN TRAINING FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE SKILLS, SUCH AS OBSERVATION, OR IN POSITIVELY IMPACTING STUDENTS' ATTITUDES, SUCH AS THEIR SENSE OF SCIENCE IDENTITY. THIS PROJECT WILL COMPARE LEARNING AND ATTITUDINAL OUTCOMES OF INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY STUDENTS FOLLOWING THE USE OF VIRTUAL OR IN-PERSON FIELD EXPERIENCES. THE DIVERSITY OF THE THREE HSIS STUDIED AND THE PROJECT'S COLLABORATION WITH THE VIRTUAL FIELD RESEARCH COORDINATION NETWORK ENSURE THE RESULTS WILL BE GENERALIZABLE. WHEN COMPLETED, THIS PROJECT WILL OFFER GUIDANCE ON HOW VFES CAN BRING FIELD LEARNING TO MORE STUDENTS, ENHANCING INSTRUCTION IN AN EQUITABLE MANNER. VIRTUAL FIELD EXPERIENCES ARE AN ESTABLISHED PART OF SCIENCE EDUCATION, WITH DEMONSTRATED POSITIVE IMPACTS ON CONTENT LEARNING AND STUDENT SATISFACTION. THEY ALSO HAVE PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OVER IN-PERSON FIELD LEARNING, SUCH AS LOWER COSTS AND GREATER ACCESSIBILITY. YET IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT WHETHER THEY ARE AS EFFECTIVE AS IN-PERSON FIELD LEARNING IN BUILDING STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC SKILLS AND INSPIRING NON-COGNITIVE OUTCOMES LIKE SCIENTIFIC IDENTITY. FIRST, BY CONSTRUCTING A VIRTUAL FIELD EXPERIENCE THAT CLOSELY PARALLELS AN IN-PERSON ONE, THE PROJECT WILL EMPLOY A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TO COMPARE COGNITIVE AND NON-COGNITIVE CHANGES PRE- TO POST-EXPERIENCE BETWEEN STUDENTS IN VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON CONDITIONS. THE SECOND EXPERIMENT WILL USE A PRE-/POST-EXPERIENCE DESIGN, WITHOUT A COMPARISON GROUP, BUT WILL STUDY OUTCOMES FROM A VIRTUAL FIELD EXPERIENCE THAT BRINGS STUDENTS TO MULTIPLE SITES ACROSS DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEMS. OUTCOME MEASURES IN BOTH EXPERIMENTS WILL INCLUDE A COMBINATION OF PREVIOUSLY VALIDATED MEASURES AND CONTENT AND SCIENCE SKILLS ASSESSMENTS THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO THE PROJECT. IN PARTICULAR LIDAR PROVIDES MEASUREMENTS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL VEGETATION STRUCTURE THAT CAN BE RELATED TO ANIMAL HABITAT AND ORGANISMAL AND FUNCTIONAL DIVERSITY. IMAGE SPECTROSCOPY CAN DETECT CANOPY FOLIAR CHEMISTRY SPECTRAL-CHEMICAL DIVERSITY RELATED TO PLANT FUNCTIONAL AND FLORISTIC DIVERSITY AND MAP PLANT SPECIES AND LAND COVER. WHEN PLACED IN SPACE THESE SENSORS CAN PROVIDE THESYSTEMATIC REPEAT COVERAGE OF MEASUREMENTS OVER LARGE AREAS THAT IS NEEDED TO TRACK ECOSYSTEM CHANGE.SPATIAL MODELS THAT CHARACTERIZE ASPECTS OF BIODIVERSITY SUCH AS SPECIES DISTRIBUTIONS OR RICHNESS FROM REMOTE SENSING PREDICTOR VARIABLES NEED EXTENSIVE AND REPRESENTATIVE IN SITU DATASETS OF TAXA OF INTEREST FOR CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION. CITIZEN SCIENCE WHEREPUBLIC VOLUNTEERS ARE ENLISTED IN SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY HAS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR COLLECTING LARGE AMOUNTS OF IN SITU SPECIES PRESENCE DATA WHILE ENGAGING THE PUBLIC IN SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. IN ADDITION NEW LOW-COST TECHNOLOGY FOR AUTOMATED SPECIES IDENTIFICATIONTHROUGH SOUND RECORDINGS (BIOACOUSTICS) IN COMBINATION WITH CITIZEN SCIENCE MAY FURTHER INCREASE SPECIES OBSERVATIONS.THIS CITIZEN SCIENCE RESEARCH INVESTIGATION HAS THE BROAD GOAL OF ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION USING A COMBINATION OF NEW AND EXISTING SPACEBORNE SENSORS. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES ARE TO: 1) INVOLVE CITIZEN SCIENTISTS IN THE COLLECTION OF IN SITU FIELD INFORMATION FOR EARTH OBSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY; 2) ASSESS THE ACCURACY AND PRECISION OF BIOACOUSTICS FOR THE DETECTION AND MONITORING OF INDIVIDUAL SPECIES AND RICHNESS; 3) TEST THE PREDICTIVE STRENGTH OF SPACEBORNE IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY LIDAR SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR SENSORS FOR SPATIAL MODELING OF SPECIES OCCUPANCY AND OVERALL SPECIES RICHNESS; AND 4) USE OCCUPANCY/RICHNESS MAPS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND FACTORS RELATED TO CONSERVING ANIMAL DIVERSITY. WE FOCUS OUR INVESTIGATION IN SONOMA COUNTY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AN AREA WITH A DIVERSE RANGE OF NATURAL VEGETATION URBAN AND AGRICULTURAL GRADIENTS. CITIZEN SCIENTISTS AFFILIATED WITH THE AUDUBON SOCIETY WILL DEPLOY PORTABLE SOUND RECORDERS AND TRAIN A BIOACOUSTICS ANALYSIS SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY IDENTIFY INDIVIDUAL BIRD SPECIES IN THE RECORDED SOUNDSCAPES. TO DEMONSTRATE THEPOTENTIAL OF SPACE-BORNE IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY AND LIDAR TO BIODIVERSITY MONITORING THE SCIENCE TEAM WILL SIMULATE HYPERSPECTRAL INFRARED IMAGER (HYSPIRI) AND GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM DYNAMICS INVESTIGATION (GEDI) LARGE-FOOTPRINT LIDAR DATA AT THE COUNTY SCALE. METRICS DERIVED FROM THESE SIMULATED DATA WILL PROVIDE UNIQUE WALL-TO-WALL INFORMATION ON VEGETATION CHEMISTRY AND THREEDIMENSIONALSTRUCTURE THAT WILL BE LINKED WITH IN SITU CITIZEN SCIENCE DATA TO MODEL SPECIES OCCUPANCY AND OVERALL RICHNESS AT THELANDSCAPE SCALE. THE INVESTIGATION WILL HAVE AN EIGHT-MONTH PROTOTYPE PHASE IN A LOCAL WATERSHED TO DEMONSTRATE THE BIOACOUSTICS TECHNOLOGY CAPABILITIES OF CITIZEN SCIENTISTS FOR AUTOMATED COLLECTION OF IN SITU BIRD DATA AND PRELIMINARY SPECIES DISTRIBUTION AND RICHNESS MAPS. IN A THREE-YEAR IMPLEMENTATION PHASE THE INVESTIGATION WILL BROADEN TO INCLUDE BIRD OBSERVATIONS ACROSS A RANGE OFNATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC HABITATS IN THE COUNTY.

PROPOSAL TITLE: BASALTIC MAGMATIC MAPPING OF COYOTE HILLS SHIELD VOLCANO IN THE SPRINGERVILLE VOLCANIC FIELD, EAST-CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT PERIOD: 01/01/2026 THROUGH 12/31/2026 PURPOSE THIS PROJECT AIMS TO MAP ERUPTIVE BASALTS OF COYOTE HILLS SHIELD VOLCANO IN THE SPRINGERVILLE VOLCANIC FIELD (SVF). THE SVF IS A WELL-MAPPED MONOGENETIC VOLCANIC FIELD, WITH COYOTE HILLS BEING THE ONLY REMAINING UNMAPPED AREA. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH MAPPING AND FIELD EXPERIENCE WHILE ADDING A VERY IMPORTANT LAST PIECE THAT WILL ALLOW MORE WORK DEVELOPING A PETROGENETIC MODEL OF THE FIELD, CREATING A COMPLETE PICTURE OF THE VOLCANISM; A PICTURE THAT WILL BE A RARE GLIMPSE OF THE ENTIRETY OF A MONOGENETIC VOLCANIC FIELD AND WILL OFFER INSIGHTS INTO HAZARD ASSESSMENT AND A TEMPLATE FOR STUDYING SIMILAR FIELDS. ACTIVITIES ONE MONTH OF FIELD WORK WILL BE COMPLETED MAPPING AND SAMPLING THE ~60 KM2 COYOTE HILLS SHIELD VOLCANO IN THE EASTERN EXTENT OF THE SVF. SUBSEQUENT THIN SECTION AND GEOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS WILL CONFIRM AND CLASSIFY MAPPED VOLCANIC UNITS. THE MAPS WILL THEN BE DIGITIZED INTO LITHOLOGIC MAPS ACCOMPANIED BY GEOCHEMISTRY AND UNIT DESCRIPTIONS. DELIVERABLES AND OUTCOMES TWO DIGITAL MAP, OF THE COYOTE HILLS SHIELD VOLCANO, ONE OF THE EASTERN PORTION AND ONE OF THE WESTERN PORTION, IN THE SPRINGERVILLE AND COYOTE HILLS QUADRANGLES, ARIZONA (UPPER NW COORDINATES=34?16-00-, 109?10-55-, SE COORDINATES=34?07-32-, 109?10-08-; NOTE THE MAPPING AREA IS CONFINED TO AN IRREGULAR AREA DIRECTLY IN THE COYOTE HILLS AREA CONTAINED WITHIN THE COORDINATES GIVEN, THE WHOLE AREA WITHIN THE COORDINATES WILL NOT BE MAPPED). MAPS WILL FOLLOW THE GEOLOGIC MAP SCHEMA (GEMS) STANDARD. ACCOMPANYING UNIT DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE MAPPED AREAS WILL BE INCLUDED. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES) THIS WORK WILL TRAIN STUDENTS IN GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND PROVIDE THEM SKILLS THAT WILL BE INVALUABLE TO THEIR FUTURES AS GEOLOGISTS, ALL WHILE ASSESSING A POORLY UNDERSTAND STYLE OF ERUPTION IN A VOLCANIC FIELD. THIS FIELD IS CURRENTLY HAVING DATES REFINED, AND NEW AGES SUGGEST THE YOUNGER FLOWS ARE <50,000 YEARS OLD. THIS YOUNG FIELD POSES POTENTIAL HAZARDS TO THE PEOPLE IN THE SURROUNDING AREA AND UNDERSTANDING THE LIFESPAN AND ERUPTIVE PATTENS OF THE SPRINGERVILLE VOLCANIC FIELD WILL SERVE AS A VALUABLE TEMPLATE FOR ASSESSING HAZARDS IN OTHER SIMILAR VOLCANIC FIELDS. THIS FIELD, OFFERS A LOOK INTO THE RELATIVELY COMPLETE ERUPTIVE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF A MONOGENETIC FIELD WHERE SEVERAL HUNDRED ERUPTIVE VENTS EXPERIENCED SHORT PERIOD OF ERUPTIVE HISTORY, SOMETHING THAT CAN'T BE STUDIED IN REAL TIME. SIMILAR MONOGENETIC VOLCANIC FIELDS POSE DISTINCT THREATS TO SURROUNDING POPULATION INCLUDING LARGE POPULATION CENTERS SUCH AS AROUND MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND OR THE EIFEL VOLCANIC FIELDS IN WESTERN GERMANY, BUT THE LONG INTERVAL BETWEEN ERUPTIONS MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STUDY THESE FIELDS IN REAL TIME, ILLUSTRATING THE NEED FOR DETAILED MAPPING AND UNDERSTANDING OF A SIMILAR FIELD, LIKE THE SVF, FROM THE BEGINNING OF ITS MAGMATIC HISTORY TO THE END.THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ADD TWO NOTABLE AREAS INTO THE STORY OF THE SVF THAT ARE CURRENTLY LACKING DETAILED MAPPING AND SAMPLING, THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN SHIELD VOLCANO IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE FIELD AND THE CENTRAL AREA OF THE GREER QUADRANGLE IN THE SOUTHEASTERN AREA OF THE FIELD. THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN SHIELD VOLCANO IS NOTABLE, BECAUSE IT IS A RARE AREA OF POLYGENETIC VOLCANISM, WHERE A SINGULAR VENT EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE ERUPTION, WITHIN THE FIELD, WHILE THE AREA IN THE GREER QUADRANGLE ARGUABLY CONTAINS SOME OF THE YOUNGEST FLOWS IN THE FIELD, BASED ON PREVIOUSLY OBSERVED AGE TRENDS, ADDING AN IMPORTANT TEMPORAL PIECE TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE FIELD. DETAILED MAPPING OF BOTH AREAS WILL BE COMPLETED BY WALKING OUT EDGES OF EACH LAVA FLOW, REPRESENTATIVE OF AN INDIVIDUAL MAGMA BATCH, SAMPLING OF EACH UNIT, AS WELL AS, STRATIGRAPHIC AND PALEOMAGNETIC ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE RELATIVE AGES OF THE LAVA FLOWS. THIS PROJECT IS AFFILIATED WITH SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY AND INCLUDES TWO STUDENTS AND A FACULTY MEMBER. ONE PRIMARY STUDENT WILL AUTHOR THE MAP OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN AREA WHILE THE OTHER WILL AUTHOR THE MAP OF THE AREA AROUND GREER IN THE SOUTHEAST PART OF THE FIELD. FOLLOWING WORK IN THE FIELD, MINERALOGICAL STUDY OF THE SAMPLES AND GEOCHEMICAL ANALYSES, CORROBORATED WITH FIELD MAPPING DATA, WILL FURTHER AID IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF DEVELOPMENT OF THESE MAGMA BATCHES. DIGITAL MAPS WILL BE COMPLETED FOR THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN SHIELD VOLCANO (LAKESIDE QUADRANGLE) AND THE PROPOSED AREA IN THE GREER QUADRANGLE, ALONG WITH ACCOMPANYING UNIT DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH MAP. THESE MAPS ARE PLANNED TO BE INTEGRATED INTO THE EXISTING DYNAMIC DIGITAL MAP OF THE FIELD (DDM; DDM.GEO.UMASS.EDU/DDM-SVFV2; CONDIT 1995 AND 2018). THE STUDENTS WILL LIKELY TURN THIS MAPPING PROJECT INTO SENIOR THESIS PROJECTS, BASED ON THE DATA THEY HAVE COLLECTED, AS WELL AS THE PREEXISTING DATASET FOR THE FIELD.

MY WORK WILL ANALYZE EXISTING TLS SCANS OF U. CALIFORNICA TREES WITH BASAL RESPROUTS TO CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF THE RESPROUTS. I WILL THEN USE THESE DATA TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RESPROUT VOLUME AND FIRE SEVERITY ACROSS TWO STUDY SITES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FORESTS. THESE RESULTS WILL BE CRUCIAL TO HELP PREDICT THE EFFECTS OF FUTURE WILDFIRE ON THE SURFACE AND LADDER FUEL LOADS OF PLOTS WHICH CONTAIN U CALIFORNICA.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO COMPILE INFORMATION AND DOCUMENT THE AMACHE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE (AMCH) AND ITS SURROUNDING VIEWSHEDS AS A TRADITIONAL CULTURAL PROPERTY PLACE (TCP). THIS TCP PROPOSAL IS DESIGNED WITH THE INTENT OF WORKING TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE HISTORIC INTEGRITY OF THE SITE, AND ESPECIALLY, TO EMPHASIZE THAT THE VIEWSHED IS AN IMPORTANT AND INSEPARABLE CHARACTER DEFINING FEATURE. THE STUDY UNITS FACILITATE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY SCIENCE AND INTEGRATED INFORMATION PRODUCTS ACROSS MULTIPLE GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM. THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS) WILL IMPLEMENT PHASE 2 OF A CREEK RESTORATION PROJECT WITHIN MUIR WOODS NATIONAL MONUMENT IN LATE SUMMER FALL 2023 TO ENHANCE HABITAT FOR THE FEDERALLY-LISTED ENDANGERED COHO SALMON. THE WORK ENTAILS GROUND DISTURBANCE ACTIVITIES IN THE CHANNEL AND ON THE CHANNEL BANKS. SUBSURFACE WORK WITHIN MUIR WOODS NATIONAL MONUMENT HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR DISCOVERIES OF ITEMS OF ARCHEOLOGICAL AND OR CULTURAL RESOURCE INTEREST. RECIPIENT WILL PERFORM AND DOCUMENT THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MONITORING DURING THE PROJECT EXCAVATION AND COLLECT ANY ARTIFACTS FOUND DURING THE EXCAVATION. BENEFICIARIES INCLUDE STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED INDIAN TRIBAL GOVERNMENTS, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, EDUCATIONAL OR SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS, ASSOCIATIONS, INDIVIDUALS.
