ROAD INDUSTRY IN THIS APPLICATION. THIS STRENGTHENING AND PARTNERSHIP PROJECT AIMS TO REPURPOSE OLIVE AND GRAPE POMACES FOR ROADWAY APPLICATIONS, THROUGH BIOPROCESSING AND BIOREFINING THEM INTO ENVIRONMENTALLY BENIGN ANTIOXIDANTS AND ANTI-ICING PRODUCTS. THIS AWARD SUPPORTS ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL TECHNOLOGY FOR COMPETITIVE BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH IN RURAL AREAS NORTH OF SACRAMENTO. THE IMAGING TECHNIQUE INCREASES VISUAL RESOLUTION AND CONTRAST OF A MICROSCOPIC SPECIMEN THROUGH THE CAPTURE OF MULTIPLE TWO-DIMENSIONAL IMAGES AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS, AND THEN RECONSTRUCTION OF THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE. FLUORESCENT DYES CAN FURTHER TARGET SPECIFIC STRUCTURES AND/OR MOLECULES IN A CELL, TISSUE, OR ORGANISM. THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE TRAINING IN MULTIPLE CLASSES WITHIN THE NORTH STATE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY, AND BE USED BY MASTER?S STUDENTS FOR RESEARCH PROJECTS. USAGE WILL INCREASE THE DEPTH OF CELLULAR/ORGANISMAL/MICROBIAL LEARNING, ENHANCE TECHNICAL SKILLS, AND FACILITATE MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS. THUS, STUDENTS WILL BE BETTER TRAINED GRADUATES OF THE CSU SYSTEM AND COMPETITIVE FOR JOBS OR PHD PROGRAMS. THE AWARD ALSO FACILITATES AN INCREASED CAPACITY FOR FACULTY LED HIGH-QUALITY PUBLICATIONS AND COMPETITIVE FUNDING PROPOSALS. CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY IS IMPORTANT TO CELLULAR SCIENCE, BUT ALSO HAS APPLICATIONS IN OTHER AREAS OF THE LIFE SCIENCES (MICROBIOLOGY, GENETICS, DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY), AND IN MATERIALS SCIENCE (GEOSCIENCES, ENGINEERING, PHYSICS). ON-SITE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY WILL ALLOW MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO UNDERSTAND GENES AND THE RELATED CELLULAR MECHANISMS RESPONSIVE TO MECHANICAL STIMULATION, AND HOW THE BREAKDOWN OF THESE MECHANISMS LEADS TO REDUCED SPINAL INTEGRITY. CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY ALSO PROVIDES NON-INVASIVE, HIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGES OF INTACT, LIVING OR MINIMALLY PRESERVED SPECIMENS. PROJECTS THAT LOOK AT EITHER LIVING FISH EMBRYOS OR ANEMONE LARVAE DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO STUDY ADAPTIVE CHANGES DURING GROWTH OR SYMBIOTIC RELATIONS. THE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPE WILL ALSO BE APPLIED IN UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE PROJECTS THAT SEEK TO CHARACTERIZE THE BIOAVAILABILITY OF MARINE IRON REGENERATED BY MICROBIAL SPECIES. RESULTS FROM THE NOVEL RESEARCH ENABLED BY THIS AWARD WILL BE DISSEMINATED IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS AND AT LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: EPIIC: CROSS-CONTINENTAL COLLABORATION COALITION (C4) -THE CROSS-CONTINENTAL COLLABORATION COALITION (C4) PROJECT IS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY ENDEAVOR AMONG FIVE PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE, FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS?CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO; UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA; CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY; STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK (SUNY) OSWEGO; AND WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY?TO ADDRESS THE MULTIFACETED CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED IN HIGHER EDUCATION TODAY. ONE OF THE CENTRAL CHALLENGES THE INVESTIGATORS AIM TO TACKLE IS THE IMPERATIVE TO STRENGTHEN INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS. RECOGNIZING THE PIVOTAL ROLE OF INDUSTRY COLLABORATION IN DRIVING INNOVATION AND ENHANCING EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES, EACH INSTITUTION WITHIN THE C4 COHORT IS COMMITTED TO ESTABLISHING AND EXPANDING REGIONAL INNOVATION PARTNERSHIPS. THESE PARTNERSHIPS WILL SERVE AS CONDUITS FOR KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE, COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS, INDUSTRY-INFORMED CURRICULUM REALIGNMENT AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS. BY FORGING STRONG TIES WITH INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO ENSURE THAT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE C4 INSTITUTIONS REMAIN RELEVANT AND RESPONSIVE TO THE EVOLVING NEEDS OF THE WORKFORCE. OFFERING INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS TAILORED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EMPLOYERS, ENHANCES THE EMPLOYABILITY AND CAREER READINESS OF THE C4 GRADUATES. ANOTHER CRITICAL AREA OF FOCUS FOR THE C4 PROJECT IS THE ENHANCEMENT OF RESEARCH CAPACITY. ROBUST RESEARCH CAPABILITIES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE, DRIVING ECONOMIC GROWTH, AND ADDRESSING PRESSING SOCIETAL CHALLENGES. TO THIS END, THE C4 INSTITUTIONS ARE INVESTING IN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE, FACULTY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES, AND INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION PLATFORMS. BY FOSTERING A CULTURE OF INNOVATION AND INQUIRY, THE INVESTIGATORS AIM TO POSITION THE C4 INSTITUTIONS AS LEADERS IN CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT. IN ADDITION TO THESE INSTITUTIONAL-LEVEL INITIATIVES, THE C4 PROJECT EMPHASIZES COHORT-WIDE COLLABORATION AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING. THROUGH REGULAR MEETINGS, WORKSHOPS, AND JOINT INITIATIVES, MEMBERS OF THE C4 COHORT EXCHANGE BEST PRACTICES, CO-CREATE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS, AND SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN ACHIEVING SHARED GOALS. THE C4 PROJECT EMPHASIZES COHORT-WIDE COLLABORATION AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING. THROUGH REGULAR MEETINGS, WORKSHOPS, AND JOINT INITIATIVES, MEMBERS OF THE C4 COHORT EXCHANGE BEST PRACTICES, CO-CREATE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS, AND SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN ACHIEVING SHARED GOALS. THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF BEST PRACTICES IN KEY AREAS OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY COLLABORATION. THROUGH COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS, PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS WILL IDENTIFY AND IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING VIBRANT REGIONAL INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS AND FOSTERING INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. BY LEVERAGING THE COLLECTIVE EXPERTISE OF FACULTY AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS, THE PROJECT WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGIES, AND APPROACHES THAT CAN BE ADOPTED AND REPLICATED BY OTHER INSTITUTIONS FACING SIMILAR CHALLENGES. MOREOVER, BY INTEGRATING EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS INTO ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, THE PROJECT WILL ENRICH STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND PREPARE THEM FOR SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN DYNAMIC AND COMPETITIVE FIELDS. THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT EXTEND ACROSS MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS, INCLUDING INSTITUTIONAL, REGIONAL, AND SOCIETAL LEVELS. AT THE INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL, THE PROJECT WILL ENHANCE THE REPUTATION AND COMPETITIVENESS OF PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS BY STRENGTHENING THEIR TIES WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS AND EXPANDING THEIR RESEARCH CAPABILITIES. ADDITIONALLY, BY ALIGNING ACADEMIC PROGRAMS WITH WORKFORCE NEEDS, THE PROJECT WILL ENHANCE STUDENT OUTCOMES AND PROMOTE SOCIAL MOBILITY. THE INVESTIGATORS EXPECT THIS COLLABORATION TO IMPACT THE LIVES OF 11,425 STUDENTS ANNUALLY. REGIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL CATALYZE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BY FOSTERING INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP, CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIES, AND DRIVING TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS. FURTHERMORE, BY PROMOTING COLLABORATION AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING AMONG INSTITUTIONS, THE PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE BROADER LANDSCAPE OF HIGHER EDUCATION, INSPIRING INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, RESEARCH, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: EXPANDING THE DIVERSITY OF IRON OXIDATION MECHANISMS VIA GENETICS, MICROSCOPY AND 'OMICS IN LEPTOTHRIX -IRON IS PRACTICALLY UBIQUITOUS ACROSS EARTH, MAKING IT AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT IN THE CHEMISTRY OF LIFE AND IN THE CHEMISTRY OF SOILS, SEDIMENTS, AND GROUNDWATER. IRON IN CONTACT WITH AN OXIDANT SUCH AS OXYGEN CAN RESULT IN IRON OXIDATION. WHEN IRON OXIDATION OCCURS IN SOILS, IT CAN LEAD TO THE SEQUESTRATION OF NUTRIENTS AND METALS; THUS, UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS AND CONTROLS ON IRON OXIDATION IS CRITICAL. MICROORGANISMS CAN CATALYZE IRON OXIDATION, YET THE EXTENT OF MICROORGANISM CONTRIBUTION TO OXIDATION REMAINS RELATIVELY UNKNOWN. THIS PROJECT EVALUATES MICROBIAL IRON OXIDATION MECHANISMS (GENES/PROTEINS) TO HELP IDENTIFY WHEN, AND HOW MUCH, MICROBIAL IRON OXIDATION IS OCCURRING IN THE ENVIRONMENT. THIS PROJECT SPECIFICALLY USES THE IRON-OXIDIZING BACTERIUM LEPTOTHRIX CHOLODNII SP-6 TO EXPLORE NEW IRON-OXIDIZING MECHANISMS. THE ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE CAN BE APPLIED TO DETERMINE CONTROLS ON IRON-OXIDIZING BACTERIAL ACTIVITY AND HOW TO HARNESS IT FOR BIOREMEDIATION, WATER TREATMENT, RESOURCE RECOVERY, AND OTHER APPLICATIONS. THIS PROJECT TRAINS TWO GRADUATE STUDENTS AND NUMEROUS UNDERGRADUATES. IN ADDITION TO PUBLIC LECTURES, HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES, AND LAB TOURS, A MAJOR OUTREACH ACTIVITY INCLUDES MICROBES IN THE WILD WORKSHOPS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS AND FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS, WHO LEARN ABOUT THE POWER OF MICROBES TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES. CULTURING, GENETICS, AND 'OMICS RESEARCH TASKS ARE BEING INCORPORATED INTO COLLEGE CLASSES AS MULTI-WEEK EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING UNITS. A NEW GENETIC SYSTEM IN THE HETEROTROPHIC IRON-OXIDIZING BACTERIUM LEPTOTHRIX CHOLODNII SP-6 PROVIDES AN UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO REVEAL NEW IRON OXIDATION MECHANISMS. L. CHOLODNII SP-6 IS EASILY CULTURABLE AND ITS GENOME HAS NUMEROUS PREDICTED METAL OXIDATION GENES INCLUDING GENES FOR MULTIHEME CYTOCHROMES AND MULTICOPPER OXIDASES WITH HOMOLOGS IN OTHER IRON OXIDIZERS. YET, THE GENOME IS MISSING WELL-KNOWN IRON OXIDASE GENES, MAKING L. CHOLODNII SP-6 A GOOD MODEL ORGANISM TO INVESTIGATE NOVEL IRON OXIDATION MECHANISMS. THIS PROJECT IS USING A COMBINATION OF CULTURING, COMPARATIVE GENOMICS, TRANSCRIPTOMICS, PROTEOMICS, GENETICS, AND MICROSCOPY TO DETERMINE THE IRON OXIDATION MECHANISMS IN LEPTOTHRIX, NOTABLY SP-6. THE RESEARCH AIMS INCLUDE (1) DISCOVER CANDIDATE IRON OXIDATION GENES IN L. CHOLODNII SP-6 VIA TRANSPOSON SEQUENCING (TNSEQ), TRANSCRIPTOMICS, AND PROTEOMICS. A HIGH THROUGHPUT PIPELINE FOR CULTURING AND ASSAYING IRON OXIDATION IS BEING DEVELOPED SO THAT AS MANY GENES AS POSSIBLE CAN BE SCREENED. (2) EXPLORE THE ENVIRONMENTAL DIVERSITY AND FREQUENCY OF LEPTOTHRIX IRON OXIDATION GENES VIA ISOLATION AND GENOMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF NEW LEPTOTHRIX SPP. FOLLOWED BY COMPARATIVE GENOMICS STUDY. (3) VALIDATE IRON OXIDATION GENES IN L. CHOLODNII SP-6 VIA GENETIC METHODS OF KNOCKOUT AND COMPLEMENTATION. (4) DETERMINE THE ROLE OF IRON OXIDATION PROTEINS IN BIOMINERALIZATION BY LABELING AND LOCALIZING KEY IRON OXIDATION PROTEINS AND IMAGING CELLS AND BIOMINERALS BY CONFOCAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. TOGETHER, THESE APPROACHES WILL ESTABLISH A LARGER SET OF IRON OXIDATION GENES/PROTEINS WHILE UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE CATALYZE FORMATION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY IMPORTANT IRON OXYHYDROXIDE BIOMINERALS. SITUATED ACROSS THE TWO HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL FOCUS ON IMPROVING REPRESENTATION, RELEVANCE, AND EQUITY IN COMPUTER SCIENCE BY FRAMING HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF WOMEN AND HISPANIC STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS THAT FEATURE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FROM MARGINALIZED BACKGROUNDS SHARING HOW CODING CONCEPTS RELATE TO THEIR LIVED EXPERIENCES. AT THE SAME TIME, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL EMBED CULTURALLY-RELEVANT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES INTO THE AP COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES BY PARTNERING WITH A HIGH SCHOOL SERVING A MAJORITY HISPANIC STUDENT POPULATION. THE SAME PRACTICES WILL SIMULTANEOUSLY BE INCORPORATED INTO CHICO STATE?S TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE TO EQUIP FUTURE AP CSA TEACHERS WITH PEDAGOGY AND STRATEGIES TO INCREASE INCLUSIVITY AND EQUITY IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. THIS BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN COMPUTING DEMONSTRATION PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AND INTEGRATE A PERSONALIZED SYSTEM OF INSTRUCTION BASED ON CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PEDAGOGY, COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING, AND MULTIMEDIA PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING TO FACILITATE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION IN AP CSA COURSES. THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES INCLUDE: PROVIDING A PLATFORM TO EXHIBIT DIVERSE REPRESENTATION AND UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES OF COMPUTING, FACILITATING AN EQUITABLE LEARNING FRAMEWORK IN K-12 COMPUTING EDUCATION, AND IMPROVING SELF- EFFICACY AND INCLUSION IN COMPUTING. THESE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES WILL BE SHOWCASED ON AN ONLINE PLATFORM THAT PROVIDES INCLUSIVE EXAMPLES OF CODING APPLICATIONS WITH INTEGRATED DRILL-AND-PRACTICE. THE PLATFORM WILL SHOWCASE HOW CODING IS MEANINGFUL IN CULTURALLY RELEVANT CONTEXTS. RUI: INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAGMATIC PROCESSES AND COPPER MINERALIZATION AT THE LIGHTS CREEK STOCK. -AS THE WORLD TRANSITIONS TO GREEN ENERGY OVER THE NEXT FEW DECADES, THERE WILL BE AN INCREASING DEMAND FOR METALS. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERLOOKED ISSUES IN THE ENERGY TRANSITION. ALL METALS COME FROM MINERALS, AND SMALLER ORE DEPOSITS WILL BECOME MORE ECONOMICALLY VIABLE AS THE LARGER ONES ARE DEPLETED. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PROCESSES THAT FORMED A SMALL PLUTON IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND THE FORMATION OF ITS ASSOCIATED COPPER ORE DEPOSITS. THE THREE SMALL IRON OXIDE-COPPER-GOLD (IOCG) DEPOSITS OF THE LIGHTS CREEK STOCK ARE BEING ASSESSED AS A FUTURE SOURCE OF COPPER. IOCG DEPOSITS FORM WHEN GROUNDWATER AND MAGMATIC FLUIDS ALTER EXISTING ROCKS ALONG FRACTURES. THE FLUIDS CHANGE THE MINERALS IN THE ROCKS AND DEPOSIT NEW COPPER MINERALS ALONG THE FRACTURES. THIS CAN CREATE A CONCENTRATION OF COPPER MINERALS WHICH MAY BECOME ECONOMIC TO MINE. AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW MAGMATIC PROCESSES AFFECT COPPER MINERAL FORMATION CAN PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE TO SEARCH FOR SIMILAR DEPOSITS ELSEWHERE. THIS WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY THREE GRADUATE STUDENTS, UP TO TWELVE UNDERGRADUATE INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS, AND WILL ALSO ENCOMPASS THREE CLASS PROJECTS. ?REAL? RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (I.E. WHEN THE INSTRUCTOR ALSO DOESN?T KNOW THE ANSWER) HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE VERY IMPORTANT IN HELPING STEM STUDENTS TO FEEL LIKE THE REAL SCIENTISTS THEY ARE, INCREASING THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND IDENTITY AS SCIENTISTS. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THREE CLASSES OF STUDENTS TO CARRY OUT A REAL RESEARCH PROJECT IN THE CLASSROOM, DRAMATICALLY INCREASING STUDENT EXPOSURE TO RESEARCH IN CSU-CHICO?S GEOLOGY PROGRAM, AS LESS THAN HALF OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TYPICALLY CARRY OUT INDEPENDENT RESEARCH WITH A FACULTY MEMBER. THE FINDINGS OF THESE CLASS PROJECTS WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH THE FINDINGS OF THE INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS TO BROADEN UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORMATION OF THE LIGHTS CREEK STOCK. THE GOAL OF THIS WORK IS TO INVESTIGATE THE TEMPORAL AND GEOCHEMICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAGMATIC PROCESSES AND COPPER MINERALIZATION WITHIN THE LIGHTS CREEK STOCK (LCS), A GRANITOID INTRUSION IN THE NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA THAT HOSTS THREE IOCG (IRON OXIDE COPPER GOLD) COPPER DEPOSITS. PROPOSED WORK WILL TEST TWO HYPOTHESES: 1) LCS WAS EMPLACED THROUGH MULTIPLE PULSES OF MAGMA OVER SEVERAL MILLION YEARS; AND 2) THE LCS-HOSTED SUPERIOR, MOONLIGHT AND ENGELS IOCG DEPOSITS ARE GEOCHEMICALLY RELATED TO ONE ANOTHER, AND WERE FORMED FROM THE REACTION BETWEEN LATE-STAGE HYDROMAGMATIC FLUIDS FROM THE LCS AND METEORIC FLUIDS. THE DIXIE FIRE IN 2021 INTENSELY BURNED THIS DENSELY VEGETATED AREA, REVEALING NEW OUTCROPS AND ALLOWING FOR MORE DETAILED FIELDWORK THAN HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN POSSIBLE. DETAILED FIELD DESCRIPTIONS AND SAMPLE COLLECTION OF THE GRANITOID ROCKS WILL AID REEVALUATION OF A HISTORIC MODEL FOR LCS FORMATION THROUGH PETROGRAPHIC, GEOCHEMICAL AND GEOCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE LATERAL VARIATION WITHIN THE STOCK. VERTICAL VARIATION WITHIN THE LCS WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH SIMILAR ANALYSES OF DRILLCORE SAMPLES DURING THREE COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (CURES) UNDERTAKEN BY STUDENTS IN A JUNIOR-LEVEL PETROLOGY CLASS. THESE VERTICAL AND LATERAL DATA WILL BE INTEGRATED TO PRODUCE A MODEL FOR PETROGENESIS OF THE LCS (HYPOTHESIS 1). THE PETROGENESIS OF THE SUPERIOR AND ENGELS IOCG DEPOSITS WILL BE ANALYZED INDIVIDUALLY AS MS PROJECTS THROUGH DETAILED CORE LOGGING OF SEVERAL CORES, SUPPORTED BY PETROGRAPHY, GEOCHEMISTRY AND ALTERATION GEOCHRONOLOGY (HYPOTHESIS 2). THE INTEGRATION OF THE IOCG AND LCS PETROGENETIC MODELS WILL PRODUCE A BIGGER PICTURE MODEL TO RELATE THE IOCG DEPOSITS TO THE MAGMATIC HISTORY OF THE LCS, WHICH CAN THEN BE SCALED UP THROUGHOUT THE NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND ANALOGOUS REGIONS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THIS WORK WILL ALSO TRAIN UP TO TWELVE UNDERGRADUATE AND THREE GRADUATE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH METHODS IN IGNEOUS PETROLOGY AND ECONOMIC GEOLOGY, AS WELL AS ENGAGING THREE SEMESTERS OF STUDENTS IN AUTHENTIC RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT TAKING PART IN A RESEARCH EXPERIENCE INCREASES A STUDENT?S STEM IDENTITY, SELF-EFFICACY, AND PERSISTENCE IN THE FIELD. CURES INCREASE ACCESS TO RESEARCH EXPERIENCES TO A BROADER AND MORE DIVERSE RANGE OF STUDENTS, SO ARE CLASSED AS A HIGH-IMPACT PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR ONGOING, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THAT WILL CONTINUE TO ADDRESS IDENTIFIED STAKEHOLDER NEEDS, AS WELL AS OUR LONG-TERM GOALS TO BUILD ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CAPACITY IN SYSTEMS-BASED AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT. PROJECT ACTIVITIES ARE RESPONSIVE TO THE RESULTS OF A BROADLY DISSEMINATED NEEDS ASSESSMENT (113 RESPONSES ANALYZED). OUR STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDE PRODUCERS; AGRICULTURAL PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, CALIFORNIARESOURCE CONSERVATION DISTRICT (RCD), AND NRCS STAFF; AND STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, AND LAND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT. THIS PROJECT INVOLVES CO-DEVELOPING AND OFFERING AN UNDERGRADUATE-LEVEL COURSE TITLED FOOD SAFETY: ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS. THE U.S. FOOD INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT REGULATORY AGENCIES OFTEN HAVE CHALLENGES FILLING KEY POSITIONS RELATED TO FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY CONTROL. MULTIPLE CASES OF FOOD SAFETY OUTBREAKS POINT TO THE NEED FOR MANAGERS TO BE WELL-INFORMED OF FOOD SAFETY PROTOCOLS, TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE AND DESIRED OUTCOMES. YET, FOOD SAFETY EDUCATION, IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND AGRIBUSINESS PROGRAMS, WHICH SUPPLY THE LABOR FORCE FOR LEADERSHIP POSITIONS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, IS LACKING. WE SEEK TO FILL THIS GAP IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM, PARTICULARLY IN THE ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS OF FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS. THIS IS THE FIRST PROGRAM IN THE NATION TO FILL THE GAP.WE AIM TO DO THIS BY: (I) DEVELOPING THE NEW COURSE TO BE TAUGHT AT CSU CHICO AND MSU, BY UTILIZING NEW MATERIALS AND LEARNER-CENTERED EDUCATION TECHNIQUES, AND (II) CONDUCTING RESEARCH FOR AT LEAST FOUR IN-DEPTH TEACHING CASE STUDIES RELATED TO A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT FOOD SAFETY ISSUES, FROM AN ECONOMICS/BUSINESS LENS, TO BE PUBLISHED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO EDUCATORS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.THE TARGET OBJECTIVES INCREASE LEADERSHIP CAPACITIES AMONG FUTURE AGRIBUSINESS MANAGERS AND LEADERS BY INCREASING THE TALENT POOL FOR BOTH INDUSTRY AND REGULATORY AGENCIES. IT WILL CREATE AN INTERDISCIPLINARY, MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL TEAM WHO WILL COLLABORATIVELY INVESTIGATE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE GEOSCIENCES THAT ATTRACT DIVERSE POPULATIONS TO THE DISCIPLINE. THE TEAM WILL DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND TEST MARKETING MATERIALS INTENDED TO ATTRACT DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL SYSTEMATICALLY COLLECT AND COMPILE DATA ABOUT WHAT ATTRACTS STUDENTS TO THE GEOSCIENCES THROUGH CONTENT ANALYSIS, FOCUS GROUPS, AND SURVEYS. THE STUDY POPULATION WILL BE STUDENTS IN INTRODUCTORY-LEVEL STEM COURSES AT CSU, CHICO, AND IN AREA HIGH SCHOOLS AND TWO-YEAR COLLEGES. RESULTS WILL IDENTIFY THE TYPES OF FRAMES THAT ATTRACT CURRENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS TO GEOSCIENCES AND WILL BE DISSEMINATED IN GEOSCIENCE CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS. THE EVIDENCE-BASED RECRUITING MATERIALS CREATED FROM THIS RESEARCH WILL BE FREELY AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD, ADAPT AND USE BY GEOSCIENCE PROGRAMS AND DEPARTMENTS AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS. DOWNSTREAM RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT ARE EXPECTED TO INCLUDE ATTRACTING MORE DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS TO THE GEOSCIENCES, WHICH WILL BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND THE STEM WORKFORCE AND CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETAL NEEDS. AS AIR TEMPERATURES RISE AND WATER AVAILABILITY CHANGES, CHANGES IN THE SOIL RESPIRATION FLUX REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FEEDBACK TO THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND THE MAGNITUDE OF FUTURE WARMING. ACCORDINGLY, THIS PROJECT WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOIL CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) AND OXYGEN DATA PROVIDED BY THE NSF-FUNDED DYNAMIC WATER CRITICAL ZONE (CZ) THEMATIC CLUSTER TO QUANTIFY THE VARIABILITY OF SOIL RESPIRATION AND THE FATE OF SOIL-PRODUCED CO2 WITH RESPECT TO CHANGES IN SOIL DEVELOPMENT, VEGETATION, AND TOPOGRAPHY THAT MEDIATE WATER AVAILABILITY ACROSS REPRESENTATIVE SEMI-ARID MONTANE ELEVATION AND CLIMATIC GRADIENTS. THE RESEARCH WILL SUPPORT CAREER TRAINING AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO, WHICH IS A FEDERALLY DESIGNATED HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION (HSI), A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, AND WHERE MORE THAN 50% OF THE STUDENT POPULATION ARE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. A ?BEDROCK TO TREETOP? CZ APPROACH CONSIDERS FEEDBACKS BETWEEN SOIL, WATER, LANDSCAPE POSITION, AND LIVING ORGANISMS AT EARTH?S SURFACE. DYNAMIC WATER STORAGE - WATER WITH INTERMEDIATE RESIDENCE TIMES - SUSTAINS CZ FUNCTION BETWEEN PRECIPITATION EVENTS, AND IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TO SOIL RESPIRATION AND CARBON CYCLING. AS A RESULT, THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO QUANTIFY THE IMPORTANCE OF DYNAMIC WATER STORAGE TO THE INTEGRAL CZ FUNCTIONS OF SOIL RESPIRATION AND THE APPARENT RESPIRATORY QUOTIENT (ARQ) THAT DETERMINES THE DEGREE TO WHICH SOIL-PRODUCED CO2 IS RESPIRED DIRECTLY TO THE ATMOSPHERE VERSUS TRANSPORTED LATERALLY OR VERTICALLY WITH INFILTRATING WATER. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL SPECIFICALLY TEST THE HYPOTHESES THAT (1) SOIL RESPIRATION AND THE ARQ WILL BE PROPORTIONAL TO THE VOLUME OF DYNAMIC WATER STORAGE IN THE ROOT ZONE, AND (2) THAT DYNAMIC WATER STORAGE CAPACITY WILL INTERACT WITH COMPLEX TERRAIN TO DETERMINE THE VARIABILITY OF SOIL RESPIRATION AND ARQ OVER SPACE AND TIME. BECAUSE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES WILL BE REPLICATED AND INTEGRATED ACROSS MULTIPLE WATERSHEDS, THEY WILL ALLOW FOR EVALUATION OF THE TRANSFERABILITY OF PROCESS-BASED INFORMATION, TOWARD A MORE COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF CZ CARBON CYCLING WITH DIRECT IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION POTENTIAL OF SEMI-ARID MONTANE ECOSYSTEMS. IMPROVING THE SUCCESS OF ALL STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM TRADITIONALLY MARGINALIZED BACKGROUNDS, IS CRITICAL TO INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE SCIENCES. TO ADDRESS THIS, THE PROJECT WILL TRAIN STEM FACULTY IN THE PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL), WHICH ARE KNOWN TO SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING. A FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITY (FLC) WILL TRAIN INSTRUCTORS TO DESIGN COURSE ACTIVITIES USING UDL PRINCIPLES AND THEN USE SURVEYS TO MEASURE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THEY ARE USED IN THEIR TEACHING PRACTICE. ACADEMIC DATA WILL BE COLLECTED FROM COURSES FACULTY TEACH BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE FLC, FOR UP TO THREE YEARS. STUDENTS' INTEREST AND SENSE OF BELONGING WILL BE MEASURED WITH SURVEYS. DIFFERENCES IN THE OUTCOMES OF DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPS TO DETERMINE THE EFFICACY AND EQUITY OF UDL PRINCIPLES WILL BE IDENTIFIED. THE FLC MODEL FOR LEARNING ABOUT AND IMPLEMENTING UDL IS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES IN SCIENCE COURSES, WHICH CAN BE ADOPTED AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS IN THE FUTURE. THE GOAL OF THIS PILOT PROJECT IS TO OFFER MULTIPLE COHORTS OF A FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITY (FLC) TO TRAIN AND GUIDE FACULTY TO IMPLEMENT UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL) PRINCIPLES IN INTRODUCTORY SCIENCE AND MATH COURSES AT TWO HSIS. THE RESEARCH QUESTION IS, ?HOW ARE STUDENTS? ACADEMIC AND AFFECTIVE SUCCESS IMPACTED BY FACULTY USE OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING PRINCIPLES IN INTRODUCTORY SCIENCE AND MATH COURSES?? MEASUREMENT OF THE EXTENT TO WHICH FACULTY AND STUDENTS REPORT THAT FACULTY HAVE IMPLEMENTED UDL PRINCIPLES WILL BE CORRELATED TO STUDENT SUCCESS IN THEIR COURSES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE FLC. STUDENT SUCCESS WILL BE DETERMINED WITH ACADEMIC MEASURES (COURSE DFW RATES) AND AFFECTIVE MEASURES USING SURVEYS (STUDENT INTEREST IN STEM, SENSE OF BELONGING, AND VALUE OF UDL-BASED ACTIVITIES). A DETERMINATION OF THE EXTENT TO WHICH UDL PRINCIPLES SUPPORT EQUITY IN COURSES BY IDENTIFYING ANY DIFFERENCES IN STUDENT OUTCOMES (ACADEMIC AND AFFECT) AMONG DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPS WILL BE CONDUCTED. IT IS EXPECTED THAT INTEGRATION OF UDL PRINCIPLES WILL BENEFIT A VAST MAJORITY OF STUDENTS ACADEMICALLY, THAT COURSES WILL BECOME MORE EQUITABLE (AS EVIDENCED BY DECREASED EQUITY GAPS), AND THAT STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM TRADITIONALLY MINORITIZED BACKGROUNDS, WILL DEMONSTRATE INCREASED AFFECTIVE GAINS. THE INVESTIGATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF EVIDENCE-BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT, GIVEN DECLINING ENROLLMENTS, HIGH DFW RATES AND EQUITY GAPS, AND THE CURRENT LACK OF CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES IN STEM COURSES. DISSEMINATION OF THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT CAN BE USED TO INSPIRE BROADER ADAPTATION OF THE UDL-FLC MODEL AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS. BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS WILL IN TURN ALLOW SCIENCE INSTRUCTORS TO MAKE DATA-ENABLED MODIFICATIONS TO THEIR TEACHING PRACTICES TO BEST SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CORRELATE STUDENT LEARNING AND INTEREST WITH DIFFERENT DEGREES OF REFORMED TEACHING PRACTICES. THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN A SERIES OF INTRODUCTORY GEOSCIENCE LESSONS THAT CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS TEACHER-CENTERED/DIDACTIC, TRANSITIONAL/ INTERACTIVE LECTURE, AND STUDENT-CENTERED BASED ON THE REFORMED TEACHING OBSERVATION PROTOCOL (RTOP) AND CLASSROOM OBSERVATION PROTOCOL FOR UNDERGRADUATE STEM (COPUS) CLASSROOM OBSERVATION PROTOCOLS. RTOP AND COPUS ARE TOOLS USED TO MEASURE FACULTY TEACHING METHODS AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN STEM CLASSROOMS. THE TREATMENT LESSONS WILL BE INTERSPERSED IN CLASSROOMS AT FOUR DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS OVER THE COURSE OF MULTIPLE SEMESTERS SO THAT STUDENTS AT EACH INSTITUTION EXPERIENCE EACH LESSON AT EACH LEVEL OF REFORMED TEACHING AT LEAST ONE TIME. A SERIES OF CONCEPTUAL ASSESSMENTS AND STUDENT INTEREST QUESTIONS WILL MEASURE STUDENT LEARNING, STUDENTS? PERCEPTION OF THEIR LEARNING, AND STUDENT INTEREST. OBSERVATIONS USING THE RTOP AND COPUS PROTOCOLS WILL MEASURE THE DEGREE OF STUDENT-CENTERED TEACHING PRACTICES IN BOTH TREATMENT AND NON-TREATMENT CLASSES. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA WILL BE USED TO ASSESS IF DIFFERENT DEGREES OF STUDENT-CENTERED INSTRUCTION HAVE ANY DIFFERENTIAL IMPACTS ON THE LEARNING, PERCEPTIONS OF LEARNING, OR INTEREST FOR STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS. THE PROJECT WILL USE A MODEL SELECTION APPROACH TO DETERMINE WHICH FACTORS (DEGREE OF STUDENT-CENTERED TEACHING, STUDENT INTEREST, STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF LEARNING, DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS) BEST PREDICT STUDENT LEARNING GAINS. THE OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE A MODEL THAT CHARACTERIZES HOW STUDENT LEARNING SCALES WITH DIFFERENT DEGREES OF STUDENT-CENTERED TEACHING. BY INTEGRATING STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS WITH LEARNING AND AFFECT, THIS WORK WILL GENERATE NEW INFORMATION TO CHARACTERIZE LEARNING AND AFFECT FOR STUDENTS FROM TRADITIONALLY MINORITIZED GROUPS AND WILL PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK THAT FACULTY CAN USE TO DETERMINE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES THEY WISH TO ADOPT BASED ON A CLEAR TARGET FOR IMPROVED STUDENT SUCCESS. UNFORTUNATELY, IT IS OFTEN STATED THAT ONLY 30% OF FAMILY FARMS SURVIVE THE TRANSITION TO THE SECOND GENERATION AND ONLY 10% MAKE IT TO THE THIRD. WHILE FAMILY FARMS PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL COMMUNITIES, THEY ARE OFTEN ILL PREPARED FOR SUCCESSION PLANNING AND ARE NOT SUCCESSFULLY PASSED ALONG TO THE NEXT GENERATION. THIS INTEGRATED, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH/EXTENSION, PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE HEAD ON AND IS WELL ALIGNED WITH THE USDA STRATEGIC GOAL TO FACILITATE RURAL PROSPERITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL ALSO DEVELOP PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MARKETING TACTICS TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF THE SERIOUS GAME AMONGST THE INTENDED AUDIENCE.THE DATA AND SCENARIOS WITHIN THE SERIOUS GAME WILL INTEGRATE INFORMATION FROM THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. THIS INFORMATION INCLUDES DATA FROM THE HAYWIRED SCENARIO, CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCES AND AFTERSHOCK FORECASTS, VISUALIZATIONS OF AFTERSHOCK FORECASTS, AND DECISION-MAKING USE CASES FOR AFTERSHOCK FORECASTS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: IRES TRACK I: US-COSTA RICA COLLABORATION TO QUANTIFY THE HOLISTIC BENEFITS OF RESOURCE RECOVERY IN SMALL-SCALE COMMUNITIES -INTEGRATING WASTE TREATMENT WITH RESOURCE RECOVERY IN SMALL-SCALE COMMUNITIES CAN FACILITATE PROGRESS TOWARD GLOBAL SANITATION INITIATIVES. HOWEVER, CHALLENGES IN QUANTIFYING AND COMMUNICATING THE HOLISTIC SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS AND BENEFITS OF WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES CAN PREVENT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SUCH INITIATIVES. THIS IRES TRACK I PROGRAM WILL TAKE PLACE IN COSTA RICA, WHERE 66% OF THE SEPTIC TANK SLUDGE IS NOT TREATED PROPERLY BEFORE DISPOSAL AND 86% OF THE WASTEWATER CONNECTED TO SANITARY SEWERS RECEIVES LIMITED TO NO TREATMENT PRIOR TO DISCHARGE. CONTAMINATION CAUSED BY UNTREATED WASTEWATER JEOPARDIZES COSTA RICA?S NATIONAL ECONOMY, WHICH IS DEPENDENT ON ECOTOURISM. CONSEQUENTLY, THIS PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE 18 U.S. STUDENTS FROM WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA, AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO WITH AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN ENGINEERING AND ANTHROPOLOGY OVER THE COURSE OF THREE YEARS. STUDENTS WILL USE BOTH SOCIAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING METHODS TO IMPROVE THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF SANITATION SYSTEMS IN SMALL COMMUNITIES USING TRIPLE-BOTTOM LINE (SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND ECONOMIC) DECISION MAKING STRATEGIES FOR WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES WHILE ADDRESSING GLOBAL SANITATION CHALLENGES IN THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CONTEXT OF RAPIDLY URBANIZING CITIES IN COSTA RICA. ALONG WITH INCREASED PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, THIS PROGRAM WILL CONTRIBUTE TO TRAINING A DIVERSE U.S. WORKFORCE TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES OF GLOBAL SIGNIFICANCE. THE PROGRAM WILL STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN COLLABORATORS IN THE U.S. AND COSTA RICA TO FACILITATE PROGRESS TOWARD SAFE MANAGEMENT OF WASTEWATER AND INTEGRATED RESOURCE RECOVERY IN A SUSTAINABLE AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE WAY. THIS IRES TRACK I PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE 18 U.S. STUDENTS FROM WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA, AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO WITH AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE TO SOLVE COMPLEX SANITATION CHALLENGES IN THE ECOTOURISM COMMUNITY OF SANTA ELENA, COSTA RICA. THIS THREE-YEAR RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IS MOTIVATED BY THE FOLLOWING DRIVING OBJECTIVES: DEVELOP CONVERGENT KNOWLEDGE AT THE INTERSECTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND ANTHROPOLOGY; PROVIDE U.S. STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP INTERDISCIPLINARY GLOBAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES; AND FACILITATE SAFE MANAGEMENT OF WASTEWATER AND INTEGRATED RECOVERY OF RESOURCES IN COSTA RICA. THE INTELLECTUAL MERIT OF THIS PROJECT STEMS FROM INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH COMBINING THE FIELDS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND ANTHROPOLOGY TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF GLOBAL IMPORTANCE IN A SUSTAINABLE AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE WAY. THIS CONVERGENT RESEARCH WILL SPUR THE DEVELOPMENT OF GLOBAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES AND WILL FACILITATE SAFE MANAGEMENT OF WASTEWATER AND RECOVERY OF RESOURCES IN COSTA RICA. IN THIS IRES PROGRAM, UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE TRAINING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN WATER QUALITY TESTING, LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT, LIFE CYCLE COST ANALYSIS, AND QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE SOCIAL SCIENCE DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. STUDENTS WILL WORK IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS TO ENGAGE A WIDE RANGE OF LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY AND ASSESS SUSTAINABILITY METRICS RELEVANT TO SMALL WASTEWATER TREATMENT INTEGRATING RESOURCE RECOVERY TO SUPPORT DECISION-MAKING IN THE SANITATION SECTOR. STUDENTS WILL ASSESS TRIPLE-BOTTOM LINE (SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND ECONOMIC) SUSTAINABILITY METRICS AND USE MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS (MCDA) TO IMPROVE THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF SANITATION SYSTEMS. A NEW MCDA TOOL WILL BE DEVELOPED BASED ON THE SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC CONTEXT OF CENTRAL AMERICA. THE TOOL WILL ALLOW WASTEWATER UTILITIES IN SMALL COMMUNITIES SERVING POPULATIONS OF LESS THAN 10,000 TO COMPARE PERFORMANCE ACROSS MULTIPLE CRITERIA FOR ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS AT DECENTRALIZED, SEMI-CENTRALIZED AND CENTRALIZED SCALES OF IMPLEMENTATION. IRES STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES WHILE ADDRESSING GLOBAL SANITATION CHALLENGES IN THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CONTEXT OF COSTA RICA.
