| National Science Foundation | THE LOUISIANA FRESHWATER SPONGE PROJECT: DEVELOPING AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PATHWAY FROM DEGREE ENTRY TO WORKFORCE AND GRADUATION -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL NEED TO PROVIDE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EARLY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON THEIR OWN CAMPUS PRIOR TO TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. THE DEMAND FOR A SKILLED STEM WORKFORCE HAS ONLY INCREASED OVER THE PAST DECADE AND IS PROJECTED TO CONTINUE IN THIS DIRECTION FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. IT IS THEREFORE ESSENTIAL THAT THE STEM EDUCATION COMMUNITY CONTINUE TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE STEM PATHWAYS THAT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF QUALIFIED STEM GRADUATES IN THE UNITED STATES. IMPORTANTLY, TWO-YEAR COLLEGES ARE IDEALLY POSITIONED TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THIS EFFORT. IN THIS PROJECT, STUDENTS FROM NEARBY MINORITY SERVING HIGH SCHOOLS WILL BE RECRUITED TO PARTICIPATE IN PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THEIR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STEM EXPERIENCE. THE PROJECT WILL ENGAGE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN ON-CAMPUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND INTERNSHIPS THROUGH THE ESTABLISHED LOUISIANA FRESHWATER SPONGE PROJECT. ADDITIONALLY, INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS WILL BE LEVERAGED TO EXTEND TRAINING TO THE WORKPLACE. PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO GAIN LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND PARTICIPATE IN OUTREACH ACTIVITIES THAT ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN SCIENCE ACTIVITIES. ULTIMATELY, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD A TRANSFERRABLE MODEL FOR ENGAGING TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH EXPERIENCES THAT RESULT IN INCREASED RETENTION AND SUCCESS IN STEM DEGREES. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT, AND ASSESS AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE RESEARCH PATHWAY AT A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE. THREE OBJECTIVES WILL GUIDE IMPLEMENTATION: 1) CREATE AND IMPLEMENT A RESEARCH PATHWAY TO POSITIVELY IMPACT A DIVERSE STEM STUDENT POPULATION; 2) PROVIDE CAREER TRAINING AND SCIENTIFIC LITERACY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES; AND 3) PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CAREERS AND RESEARCH THROUGH COMMUNITY, CAMPUS, AND HIGH SCHOOL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES. WHILE MANY DOCUMENTED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE LIMITED TO SUMMER PROGRAMS, THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO BUILD OPPORTUNITIES THAT PROVIDE CONTINUOUS RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR. THIS WILL CREATE A PLATFORM TO INCREASE RETENTION, WORKFORCE READINESS, AND/OR TRANSFER TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. OVER THE LIFE OF THE PROJECT, TWENTY-FOUR STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN EVERY STEP OF THE PATHWAY, WHILE MORE THAN 100 ADDITIONAL STUDENTS WILL BENEFIT FROM INDIVIDUAL PROJECT COMPONENTS INCLUDING JOB PLACEMENT IN EXTERNSHIPS, SCIENTIFIC LITERACY WORKSHOPS, AND TRAINING AT THE LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY MARINE CONSORTIUM RESEARCH LABORATORY. THE IMPACT OF THE ACTIVITIES ON BOTH COGNITIVE AND AFFECTIVE DOMAINS WILL BE ASSESSED IN ON-GOING COLLABORATION WITH AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR. ANNUALLY WE WILL ASSIGN PROJECTS USING OUR EXISTING MAKER SPACE AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING FACILITIES AND WE PLAN TO HAVE STUDENTS APPLY TO MSFC AS INTERNS TO GAIN HANDS ON EXPERIENCE AS COLLABORATORS. DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS EXPANDED ITS VOCATIONAL-TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM TO INCLUDE ROBOTICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. IT HAS ALSO EXPANDED ITS PRE-ENGINEERING PROGRAM TO INCLUDE TRANSFERABLE FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE ENGINEERING COURSES IN CALCULUS-BASED PHYSICS I-III AND MATHEMATICS FOR ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS FROM CALCULUS I THROUGH LINEAR ALGEBRA AND DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS. COALITION PROJECTS INCLUDE SUPPORTING A CENTRAL CAMPUS THAT CONNECTS THE ENTIRE CLUSTER ECOSYSTEM, COORDINATING A RANGE OF PROGRAMMING, TESTBEDS TO IMPROVE HYDROGEN COST COMPETITIVENESS, A DEVELOPMENT CENTER FOR HYDROGEN-FUELED SHIPS, AND A HYDROGEN FUELING BARGE. SOWELA TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND THE CITY OF LAKE CHARLES ARE ADDRESSING THE LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEED FOR MORE JOBS, ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT, AND PILOTS BY PLANNING AND ESTABLISHING A FLIGHT TRAINING SCHOOL TO PROVIDE ASPIRING PILOTS WITH COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAMS LEADING TO A PRIVATE PILOTS LICENSE AND COMMERCIAL FLIGHT TRAINING. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT WILL EQUIP STUDENTS WITH THE EXPERTISE REQUIRED TO PURSUE CAREERS AS PROFESSIONAL PILOTS AND FULFILL THE CURRENT DEMANDS FOR PILOTS WHETHER IT BE COMMERCIAL AIRLINES OR CONTRACT FLYING SUCH AS FISH FINDERS, PIPELINE SURVEYORS, OIL INDUSTRY, OR CROP DUSTING. ADDITIONALLY, THE FLIGHT SCHOOL WILL BE THE IMPETUS FOR ADDITIONAL PRIVATE INVESTMENT IN THE AREA.? THE LOUISIANA FRESHWATER SPONGE PROJECT: DEVELOPING AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PATHWAY FROM DEGREE ENTRY TO WORKFORCE AND GRADUATION -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL NEED TO PROVIDE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EARLY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON THEIR OWN CAMPUS PRIOR TO TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. THE DEMAND FOR A SKILLED STEM WORKFORCE HAS ONLY INCREASED OVER THE PAST DECADE AND IS PROJECTED TO CONTINUE IN THIS DIRECTION FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. IT IS THEREFORE ESSENTIAL THAT THE STEM EDUCATION COMMUNITY CONTINUE TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE STEM PATHWAYS THAT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF QUALIFIED STEM GRADUATES IN THE UNITED STATES. IMPORTANTLY, TWO-YEAR COLLEGES ARE IDEALLY POSITIONED TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THIS EFFORT. IN THIS PROJECT, STUDENTS FROM NEARBY MINORITY SERVING HIGH SCHOOLS WILL BE RECRUITED TO PARTICIPATE IN PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THEIR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STEM EXPERIENCE. THE PROJECT WILL ENGAGE TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN ON-CAMPUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND INTERNSHIPS THROUGH THE ESTABLISHED LOUISIANA FRESHWATER SPONGE PROJECT. ADDITIONALLY, INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS WILL BE LEVERAGED TO EXTEND TRAINING TO THE WORKPLACE. PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO GAIN LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND PARTICIPATE IN OUTREACH ACTIVITIES THAT ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN SCIENCE ACTIVITIES. ULTIMATELY, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD A TRANSFERRABLE MODEL FOR ENGAGING TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH EXPERIENCES THAT RESULT IN INCREASED RETENTION AND SUCCESS IN STEM DEGREES. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT, AND ASSESS AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE RESEARCH PATHWAY AT A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE. THREE OBJECTIVES WILL GUIDE IMPLEMENTATION: 1) CREATE AND IMPLEMENT A RESEARCH PATHWAY TO POSITIVELY IMPACT A DIVERSE STEM STUDENT POPULATION; 2) PROVIDE CAREER TRAINING AND SCIENTIFIC LITERACY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES; AND 3) PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CAREERS AND RESEARCH THROUGH COMMUNITY, CAMPUS, AND HIGH SCHOOL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES. WHILE MANY DOCUMENTED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE LIMITED TO SUMMER PROGRAMS, THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO BUILD OPPORTUNITIES THAT PROVIDE CONTINUOUS RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR. THIS WILL CREATE A PLATFORM TO INCREASE RETENTION, WORKFORCE READINESS, AND/OR TRANSFER TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. OVER THE LIFE OF THE PROJECT, TWENTY-FOUR STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN EVERY STEP OF THE PATHWAY, WHILE MORE THAN 100 ADDITIONAL STUDENTS WILL BENEFIT FROM INDIVIDUAL PROJECT COMPONENTS INCLUDING JOB PLACEMENT IN EXTERNSHIPS, SCIENTIFIC LITERACY WORKSHOPS, AND TRAINING AT THE LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY MARINE CONSORTIUM RESEARCH LABORATORY. THE IMPACT OF THE ACTIVITIES ON BOTH COGNITIVE AND AFFECTIVE DOMAINS WILL BE ASSESSED IN ON-GOING COLLABORATION WITH AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR. FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE EVALUATION METHODS WILL PROVIDE THE PROJECT TEAM WITH FEEDBACK AT REGULAR INTERVALS. THE RESULTS WILL BE DISSEMINATED VIA PUBLICATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, AND PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS. OUR PROPOSED DIRECT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ON-SITE SUPPORT TARGETING INDUSTRIES WITHIN COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY LEGACY POLLUTION ISSUES, THROUGH THE REDUCTION OF ENERGY AND EMISSIONS, REDUCING PACKAGING, HAZARDOUS WASTE REDUCTION, PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS TO REUSE MATERIALS IN THE SAME PRODUCTION PROCESS, WORKSHOP TRAINING, FOLLOW-UP AND COORDINATING CALLS, AND VIDEO GUIDES AND MARKETING MATERIAL, LEVERAGING THE EXPERTISE OF FOUR PRESTIGIOUS AND COMMUNITY-DRIVEN UNIVERSITIES IN THE STATE: DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE, DILLARD UNIVERSITY, XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA, AND LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY. IN COLLABORATION WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS, DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE SEEKS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN AUTHENTIC, PLACE-BASED RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT INTRODUCE STEM RESEARCH EARLY IN THEIR ACADEMIC JOURNEY AND SUPPORT TRANSITIONS TO FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS OR THE WORKFORCE. STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR COMMUNITIES BY INVESTIGATING RESEARCH QUESTIONS ALONG THE LAFAYETTE GREENWAY, A FIELD LOCATION IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA. BY EMBEDDING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN EARLY COURSE WORK, THE PROJECT FOSTERS TECHNICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND RESPONDS TO THE NATIONAL DEMAND FOR A SKILLED STEM WORKFORCE. AS PART OF A BROADER MOVEMENT TO EXPAND EARLY RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, THIS EFFORT OFFERS A REPLICABLE MODEL FOR OTHER TWO-YEAR COLLEGES. THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: 1) IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION IN STEM BY EMBEDDING CURES INTO STEM PATHWAYS, 2) FOSTER A LEARNING CONTEXT THAT PROMOTES STUDENTS' DEVELOPMENT AS SCIENTISTS, AND 3) BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS' TRANSITION TO FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS. OUR PROPOSED PROJECT WILL EXPAND OUR EXISTING ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE CURRICULUM THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A THREE SEMESTER PROJECTBASED ADVANCED MANUFACTURING COURSE WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SPACE APPLICATIONS. THIS COURSE WILL SERVE NASA'S GOAL TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN UNDER-REPRESENTED STUDENTS IN SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) CAREERS THROUGH HANDS ON PROJECT BASED TEACHING. FOR THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF COURSE DEVELOPMENT DIRECT SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE OFFERED TO QUALIFYING STUDENTS WHO TAKE THE COURSES. THESE SEMINARS AND FIELD TRIPS WILL BE OPEN TO ALL DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS. A THREE SEMESTER CURRICULUM AT DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE WILL DEVELOP BASIC COMPETENCIES AND CONFIDENCE IN FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORE STUDENTS INTO THE FIELD OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND ASSIST PRE-ENGINEERING STUDENTS. WE INTEND TO DEVELOP A CURRICULUM THAT COVERS BASIC MATERIALS OF PROPERTIES AN INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING IN CAD DAQ ROBOTICS AND COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE. ANNUALLY WE WILL ASSIGN PROJECTS USING OUR EXISTING MAKER SPACE AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING FACILITIES AND WE PLAN TO HAVE STUDENTS APPLY TO MSFC AS INTERNS TO GAIN HANDS ON EXPERIENCE AS COLLABORATORS. DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS EXPANDED ITS VOCATIONAL-TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM TO INCLUDE ROBOTICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. IT HAS ALSO EXPANDED ITS PRE-ENGINEERING PROGRAM TO INCLUDE TRANSFERABLE FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE ENGINEERING COURSES IN CALCULUS-BASED PHYSICS I-III AND MATHEMATICS FOR ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS FROM CALCULUS I THROUGH LINEAR ALGEBRA AND DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS. MORE LOUISIANA STUDENTS ARE STAYING AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES FOR FINANCIAL REASONS. THESE NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS ARE AN UNTAPPED WORKFORCE FOR NASA AS BOTH COLLABORATORS AND FUTURE WORKFORCE. THESE STUDENTS CAN BE TAPPED FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT AND BETTER RETAINED TO A STEM WORKFORCE WITH EARLIER EXPOSURE TO MULTIPLE STEM DISCIPLINES. THESE STUDENTS WOULD BENEFIT FROM BEING EXPOSED TO MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH. WE CURRENTLY HAVE A FUNCTIONAL COMMUNITY MAKER SPACE AT OUR INSTITUTION. TWICE A WEEK WE HAVE COURSES THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC AND TO STUDENTS THAT TEACH PROFICIENCY ON OUR ROUTERS CUTTERS AND PRINTERS. WE CURRENTLY HAVE WORK-SHOPPING DAYS M-F THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR K-12 STUDENTS TO USE OUR LAB. IN ORDER TO PERMIT THIS RESOURCE TO BECOME PART OF OUR STUDENTS' HERITAGE A FULL CURRICULUM OF THE LAB S CAPABILITIES NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED BEYOND K-12 WORKSHOPS THAT IS SUITABLY ADVANCED FOR FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE ENGINEERING STUDENTS.
