THE VOLUNTEER TUTORS WILL PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING IN READING TO AT LEAST 300 PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE. TUTOR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE: 1) READ MATERIALS TO STUDENTS THAT ARE SLIGHTLY ABOVE THEIR READING LEVEL, 2) PRACTICE THE ALPHABET AND LETTER SOUNDS, 3) PRACTICE RECOGNITION OF "SIGHT WORDS" (IDENTIFIED BY THE TEACHER), 4) HAVE THE STUDENTS READ GRADE-LEVEL MATERIALS TO THE TUTOR, 5) HAVE THE STUDENTS PRACTICE WRITING ASSIGNED VOCABULARY WORDS AND "SIGHT WORDS." THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS EDUCATION. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, THE PROJECT OUTPUT (ED1A) GOALS ARE TO: 1) PROVIDE TUTORING TO A MINIMUM OF 300 CHILDREN PER YEAR, 2) PROVIDE A MINIMUM OF 2000 TOTAL HOURS OF TUTORING PER YEAR, AND 3) PROVIDE A MINIMUM OF 10 HOURS OF TUTORING TO AT LEAST 100 CHILDREN PER YEAR. SPECIFIC OUTCOME MEASURES (ED5A) ARE: 1) 75% OF STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE TUTORING WILL DEMONSTRATE IMPROVEMENT IN READING ABILITY AND COMPREHENSION AS MEASURED BY STANDARDIZED PRE-AND POST-TESTING ADMINISTERED BY THE SCHOOL (225 PER YEAR) AND 2) 70% OF THE STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE AT LEAST 10 HOURS OF TUTORING WILL READ AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR (70 PER YEAR). THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $92,818 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY APPROXIMATELY $59,000, PROVIDED BY THE STATE CNCS GRANT, PLUS LOCAL UNITED WAY AGENCIES, SEVERAL LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, AND FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES.

THE RSVP OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS SPONSORED BY TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY HAS ACTIVELY RECRUITED AND PLACED OLDER VOLUNTEERS SINCE 1974. SINCE 1998, WE HAVE FOCUSED A LARGE PORTION OF OUR TIME AND RESOURCES TO SPONSOR AND GROW THE RSVP AMERICA READS PROJECT. DURING THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR WE INVOLVED 122 RSVP READING TUTORS IN 30 SCHOOLS IN OUR FOUR COUNTIES. EDUCATION K-12 SUCCESS IS OUR CHOSEN PRIMARY FOCUS AREA. OTHER FOCUS AREAS ARE FOOD BANKS AND FOOD PANTRIES, AND A MAJOR THRIFT STORE THAT PROVIDES CAPACITY BUILDING TO A SCHOOL. EQUIPMENT: A BENCHTOP POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETER FOR ENHANCING UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND TRAINING AT TLU -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS EDUCATIONAL INSTRUMENTATION (EI) PROJECT AIMS TO TRAIN STUDENTS ON POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTION (PXRD), ONE OF THE MOST UTILIZED TOOLS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. THIS TOOL ALLOWS FOR DETERMINING THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE AND PURITY OF BULK SOLID MATERIALS. AS A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE, HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION, TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY (TLU) IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION AND TRAINING TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS. THIS INSTRUMENT ACQUIRED THROUGH THIS EDUCATIONAL INSTRUMENTATION GRANT WILL IMPROVE THE EDUCATION TRAINING AND QUALITY OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT TLU. THE PXRD ADDS A NEW, EXCITING AND RELEVANT TOPIC TO INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY LAB OFFERINGS THAT WILL BETTER PREPARE GRADUATES FOR A WIDE RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF AN EXPANDED TECHNOLOGICAL WORKFORCE. ACQUIRING THE POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETER WILL EXPAND THE TRAINING AND EDUCATION AT TLU, PROVIDING UNDERGRADUATE AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS WITH EXPOSURE TO REAL- WORLD APPLICATIONS AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES. PXRD IS A ROBUST AND VERSATILE MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUE FOR DETERMINING PHASE IDENTIFICATION, PURITY, AND CRYSTAL STRUCTURE WITH MULTIPHASE ANALYSIS, PHASE TRANSITION MONITORING, AND MEASURING UNIT CELL DIMENSIONS. THE PXRD TECHNIQUE IS BASED ON INVESTIGATING THE PROPERTIES OF MICROCRYSTALLINE POWDERS AND WILL BRING A NEW DIMENSION OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION TO TLU STUDENTS, WHICH IS NOT CURRENTLY POSSIBLE. THE ACQUISITION OF A BENCHTOP POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETER WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO WORK WITH CUTTING- EDGE TECHNOLOGY IN THE FIELDS OF SOLID-STATE CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, AND MATERIALS SCIENCE, ENHANCING THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND PREPARING THEM FOR THE DEMANDS OF THESE INDUSTRIES. THE ADDITION OF THE PXRD IN TEACHING LABS WILL NOT ONLY ENHANCE FACULTY-STUDENT INTERACTIONS AND EXPAND STUDENT LEARNING AND TRAINING OPTIONS BUT ALSO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN STRENGTHENING FACULTY COLLABORATIONS, FOSTERING TEAMWORK, AND CREATING MORE EXCITING OUTREACH ACTIVITIES. THE HSI PROGRAM AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION AND INCREASE CAPACITY TO ENGAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIONS TO IMPROVE STEM LEARNING AND TEACHING AT HSIS. PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE HSI PROGRAM WILL ALSO GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO ACHIEVE THESE AIMS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: THE ROLE OF CO-CURRICULAR SERVICE AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES ON PERSISTENCE AND SUCCESS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PHYSICS STUDENTS -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY STUDYING HOW UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN INFORMAL PHYSICS OUTREACH PROGRAMS FOR K-12 STUDENTS AFFECTS THEIR SUCCESS AS PHYSICS MAJORS. SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH EFFORTS HAVE FOCUSED ON IMPROVING RETENTION IN STEM IN FORMAL EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS, SUCH AS THE CLASSROOM OR LABORATORY, WHILE THE IMPACT OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN INFORMAL PHYSICS OUTREACH PROGRAMS REMAINS UNCLEAR. PRIOR WORK SUGGESTS THAT IMPROVING STUDENTS' SENSE OF BELONGING, DEFINED BY THE FEELING OF BEING VALUED AND ACCEPTED AS A LEGITIMATE MEMBER OF THEIR CHOSEN SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINE CAN REDUCE ATTRITION RATES AND INCREASE RESILIENCE, PARTICULARLY AMONG STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS. PARTICIPATING IN OUTREACH EXPERIENCES MAY DEVELOP SKILLS AND ABILITIES BEYOND THE FOCUS OF FORMAL EDUCATION, INCLUDING COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, AND CREATIVITY. THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY AND AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PHYSICS TEACHERS HAVE IDENTIFIED THESE SKILLS AS A HIGH PRIORITY FOR PHYSICS PROGRAMS TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR 21ST CENTURY CAREERS. THSI PROJECT INTENDS TO CONDUCT A NATIONAL SURVEY OF UNDERGRADUATE PHYSICS MAJORS TO ASSESS STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN INFORMAL PHYSICS PROGRAMS AND TO STUDY HOW THE ENGAGEMENT IS RELATED TO STUDENT SUCCESS FACTORS. THE ANALYSIS OF SURVEY RESULTS SHOULD INFORM A SET OF BEST-PRACTICE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PHYSICS DEPARTMENTS FOR IMPROVING OUTREACH PROGRAMS AND TRANSFORMING CULTURE TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED. THIS PROJECT PLANS TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF INFORMAL, CO-CURRICULAR PHYSICS OUTREACH PROGRAMS, WHICH ARE OFTEN DESIGNED AND FACILITATED BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, ON STUDENTS? PHYSICS IDENTITY, RETENTION AND PERSISTENCE, SENSE OF BELONGING, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF 21ST CENTURY CAREER SKILLS. DATA WILL BE COLLECTED VIA A SURVEY INSTRUMENT DISTRIBUTED TO PHYSICS PROGRAMS AT US COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO CREATE AND VALIDATE A NEW SURVEY INSTRUMENT WITH CLOSED AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS TO PROBE STUDENTS? PERCEIVED VALUE OF THE OUTREACH EXPERIENCE AND ITS IMPACT ON MEASURES OF CONFIDENCE, SENSE OF COMMUNITY, ABILITY TO WORK IN TEAMS, COMPETENCE IN COMMUNICATING SCIENCE, PERCEPTIONS OF ABILITY TO DEVELOP CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS AND PERCEIVED IMPACT OF EXPERIENTIAL AND COLLABORATIVE LEARNING ON PHYSICS KNOWLEDGE. THE SURVEY WILL BE GIVEN TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ACROSS THE US THROUGH THE EXISTING NETWORK OF ACTIVE SOCIETY OF PHYSICS STUDENTS CHAPTERS, CREATING A LARGE DATASET THAT ALLOWS FOR AN OBJECTIVE EXAMINATION OF HOW OUTREACH PROGRAMS SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT POPULATIONS, INCLUDING THOSE TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM. ANALYSIS OF THE SURVEY RESPONSES WILL EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP OF OUTREACH ACTIVITIES TO PHYSICS IDENTITY INCLUDING INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RECOGNITION AS A MEMBER OF THE PHYSICS COMMUNITY, INTEREST AND MOTIVATION IN PHYSICS, BELIEFS RELATED TO PERFORMANCE AND COMPETENCY WITHIN PHYSICS, CONFIDENCE AND PHYSICS SELF-EFFICACY, AND DESIRE TO PERSIST IN THE FIELD, AS WELL AS ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CAREER SKILLS IMPORTANT TO 21ST CENTURY CAREERS. THE NSF IUSE: EHR PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS.
