BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF EL PASO PROPOSES TO IMPLEMENT THE TRANSFORMING YOUTH MENTORING APPROACHES FOR OPIOID AND SUBSTANCE MISUSE PROGRAM. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DELIVER TARGETED MENTORING SERVICES, WITH ENHANCING PROTECTIVE FACTORS, TO YOUTH WHO ARE AT RISK OR CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING OPIOIDS AND OTHER SUBSTANCE MISUSE IN EL PASO COUNTY. PROJECT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE EXPANDING THE CAPACITY OF THE EXISTING MENTORING PROGRAM TO PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY SERVICES TO YOUTH AT RISK OR CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING OPIOIDS AND OTHER SUBSTANCE MISUSE; ENHANCING BASELINE MENTOR TRAINING FOR THE TARGET POPULATION AND PROVIDE ONGOING DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT AFTER THE INITIAL TRAINING IS COMPLETE; DEPLOYING MENTORING SERVICES THAT UTILIZE EDUCATIONAL AND SUPPORT PROGRAMMING FOR YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES TO ADDRESS OPIOID OR OTHER SUBSTANCE MISUSE ISSUES; AND ENGAGING YOUTH AND FAMILY MEMBERS WITH LIVED EXPERIENCE AS VITAL RESOURCES. EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO ENGAGE WITH YOUTH WHO ARE AT RISK OR CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING OPIOIDS AND OTHER SUBSTANCE MISUSE IN EL PASO COUNTY; RAPID RESPONSE AND TARGETED EVIDENCE-BASED GROUP MENTORING SERVICES; REDUCTION IN RECIDIVISM IN YOUTH WHO ARE AT RISK OR CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING OPIOIDS AND OTHER SUBSTANCE MISUSE IN EL PASO COUNTY; AND REGULAR PROGRAM ASSESSMENTS. SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ENHANCED MENTOR TRAINING, JOB PREPARATION, EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER EXPLORATION, AND COORDINATED CASE MANAGEMENT.

BUILDING COMMUNITY CAPACITY TO EQUITABLY ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH IN THE BORDERLAND - BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF EL PASO PROPOSES THE PROJECT TITLED “BUILDING COMMUNITY CAPACITY TO EQUITABLY ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH IN THE BORDERLAND,” WHICH WILL SERVE 600 INDIVIDUALS ANNUALLY FOR A TOTAL OF 1,800 SERVED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT PERIOD. THROUGH THIS PROJECT, BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF EL PASO WILL PROVIDE THE GEOGRAPHIC CATCHMENT AREA OF EL PASO COUNTY, TEXAS, WITH 867,947 RESIDENTS BORDERING MEXICO, WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING IN THE REGION. WITHIN THE GEOGRAPHIC CATCHMENT, A SPECIAL FOCUS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE UNINCORPORATED AREA OF CANUTILLO, ENCOMPASSING THE FURTHEST WEST REGION OF THE COUNTY DISCONNECTED FROM MAJOR RESOURCES AND SUPPORTS. THE TARGET POPULATION FOR THIS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING IS GEARED TOWARDS ADULTS (E.G., SCHOOL PERSONNEL, LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL, VETERANS, ARMED SERVICES MEMBERS, ETC.) AND YOUTH (AGES 15-18). THIS TRAINING WILL HELP PARTICIPANTS RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL DISORDERS AND HOW TO SAFELY DE-ESCALATE CRISIS SITUATIONS, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES. PROJECT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: G1. BUILD COMMUNITY CAPACITY TO EQUITABLY ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH IN THE BORDERLAND, G2. CREATE A CANUTILLO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TRAUMA-INFORMED COMMUNITY OF YOUTH, EMPLOYEES, AND CAREGIVERS TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, G3. TO INCREASE ACCESS TO CULTURALLY SENSITIVE, REGIONALLY RELEVANT MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION THROUGH OUTREACH AND AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS ON VARIOUS PLATFORMS THROUGHOUT EL PASO COUNTY AND G4. TO CONDUCT AN EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING SERVICES OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT.

THE IMPLEMENTING A MENTORING ECOSYSTEM FOR BORDERLAND YOUTH IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM PROJECT AIMS TO DELIVER TARGETED MENTORING SERVICES AND ENHANCE PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR YOUTH INVOLVED IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IN EL PASO COUNTY. THIS THREE-YEAR INITIATIVE WILL ADDRESS THESE YOUTH'S UNIQUE NEEDS THROUGH MACRO AND MICRO MENTORING. THE MACRO APPROACH INVOLVES SITE-BASED GROUP MENTORING IN A DETENTION FACILITY. IN CONTRAST, THE MICRO APPROACH FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY-BASED GROUP MENTORING, PAIRING YOUTH ON PROBATION WITH ADULT MENTORS FOR LONG-TERM 12-MONTH SUPPORT. THE PROJECT WILL DEPLOY FIVE COHORTS OVER THE GRANT PERIOD, STARTING JANUARY 2025, AND INCORPORATE EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES SUCH AS SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND ART THERAPY. BY FOSTERING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND PROVIDING STRUCTURED SUPPORT, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO PROMOTE POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL CHANGES, FACILITATE COMMUNITY REINTEGRATION, AND REDUCE RECIDIVISM RATES AMONG PARTICIPATING YOUTH.
