ACEQUIAS, THE LIFEBLOOD OF EVERY SPANISH COLONIAL SETTLEMENT, HAVE BEEN LARGELY NEGLECTED BY PREVIOUS PRIVATE OWNERS AND ANNUAL VEGETATION SUCCESSION IS SIGNIFICANT. YOUTH CREWS WILL PERFORM RECURRING TASKS ASSOCIATED WITH GENERAL SITE WORK, VEGETATION REMOVAL, DE-SILTING AND CLEANING OF THE 6 MILE ESPADA ACEQUIA AND PORTIONS OF THE 7 MILE SAN JUAN ACEQUIA TO RESTORE AND MAINTAIN ADEQUATE WATER FLOW FROM THE RIVER INTO THESE HISTORIC GRAVITY FLOW IRRIGATION SYSTEMS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO RECRUIT ONE TEXAS CONSERVATION CORPS. MEMBER TO ASSIST WITH REVIEWING CURRENT PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATING STAFF ABOUT INDIGENOUS STORIES THAT ARE RELEVANT TO BIG THICKET NATIONAL PRESERVE. WORKING ALONGSIDE UNIFORMED NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS) STAFF, THE INDIGENOUS YOUTH CORP MEMBER WILL BE TRAINED IN INTERPRETATION EDUCATION PADDLE PROGRAMMING, PUBLIC SPEAKING AND NPS SAFETY PROTOCOLS SO THAT THEY CAN ASSIST IN THE PRESENTATION OF PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE TERM, TO PROVIDE BETWEEN 10 AND 15 EXPERIENCES, TO OVER 200 PEOPLE FROM THE PUBLIC. THE INDIGENOUS YOUTH CORP MEMBER WILL ALSO PRODUCE A SERIES OF SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS AND OTHER TEXT FOR THE BIG THICKET WEBSITE.
