STATEN ISLAND CHILDREN'S TRAUMA CENTER - RICHMOND UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER (RUMC) PROPOSES TO CONTINUE THE WORK OF THE STATEN ISLAND CHILDREN'S TRAUMA CENTER (SICTC), AN INITIATIVE THAT WILL LEVERAGE OUR 160 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE SERVING TRAUMA SUPPORT AND TREATMENT FOR STATEN ISLAND'S CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO HAVE BEEN AND CONTINUE TO BE AFFECTED BY AN ARRAY OF COMPOUNDING TRAUMATIC EVENTS. SICTC IS A MULTI-PRONGED INITIATIVE THAT WILL SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA, AGES 3021 YEARS OLD, AND THEIR CAREGIVERS (BOTH FAMILIES AND CROSS-SECTOR PROVIDERS) ACROSS THE SYSTEMS OF CARE. OVER THE FIVE YEAR PROGRAM, SICTC WILL PROVIDE TRAUMA PSYCHOEDUCATION THROUGH THE FAMILIES OVERCOMING UNDER STRESS (FOCUS) INTERVENTION TO 1,000 CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITHIN 6 SCHOOL-BASED CLINICS AND 2 DAY TREATMENT AND 2 OUTPATIENT SETTINGS. ADDITIONALLY, 250 OF THEIR CAREGIVERS WILL PARTICIPATE IN A CARE FOR THE CAREGIVERS PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP. WE WILL SCREEN 3,100 CHILDREN AND YOUTH AGES 3-21 YEARS OLD FOR TRAUMA OVER THE LIFETIME OF THE GRANT, AND CHILDREN AND YOUTH IDENTIFIED AS BEING ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY TRAUMA WILL BE REFERRED TO SICTC'S TRAUMA TREATMENT SERVICES THAT WILL BE TAILORED TO THEIR NEEDS AND EXPERIENCES. WE WILL OFFER 100 YOUTH IN GRADES K-12 SCHOOL-BASED GROUP TREATMENT THROUGH COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION FOR TRAUMA IN SCHOOLS (CBITS)/BOUNCE BACK, AND ONE-ON-ONE CLINIC- OR SCHOOL-BASED TRAUMA FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (TF-CBT) WILL BE PROVIDED TO 200 YOUTH WITH MORE ACUTE NEEDS AND/OR THOSE OUTSIDE OF THE CBITS/BOUNCE BACK TARGET AGE RANGE. WE ESTIMATE THAT THE RACIAL/ETHNIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE SERVED WILL BE APPROXIMATELY: 24% BLACK; 65% HISPANIC/LATINO; AND 11% WHITE AND 1% WHO IDENTIFY AS ANOTHER RACE/ETHNICITY. 48% WILL BE MALE AND 52% FEMALE, AND APPROXIMATELY 22% WILL IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ. FINALLY, RUMC WILL LEVERAGE OUR EXTENSIVE GRASSROOTS CONNECTIONS ACROSS OUR COMMUNITIES, TO PROVIDE 1,000 NON-CLINICAL COMMUNITY BASED PROVIDERS WITH TRAUMA 101 PSYCHOEDUCATION AND 20 COMMUNITY BASED CLINICIANS IN ADVANCED EVIDENCE BASED TRAUMA TREATMENTS AND TRAUMA SCREENING TOOLS, THEREBY INFUSING THE ENTIRE STATEN ISLAND SYSTEM OF CARE WITH A TRAUMA INFORMED LENS AND ENSURING OUR CLINICAL STAFF ARE EQUIPPED TO TREAT INDIVIDUALS WITHIN ALL ASPECTS OF THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONTINUUM. AS A RESULT OF THIS WORK, SICTC WILL IMPROVE THE INTEGRATED CARE PROCESS BY IDENTIFYING CHILDREN AND YOUTH ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY TRAUMA, INCREASE ACCESS TO TRAUMA TREATMENT AND SUPPORT AND IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR STATEN ISLAND'S CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY TRAUMA AND ENHANCE THE STATEN ISLAND CHILD AND YOUTH SERVICES SYSTEM THROUGH TRAUMA-FOCUSED TRAININGS AND EDUCATION.

COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - RICHMOND MEDICAL CENTER RUMC DR. DANIEL J. MESSINA 355 BARD AVENUE STATEN ISLAND, NY 10310 DMESSINA@RUMCSI.ORG O: 718-818-2103 F: 718-818-2293 THE INTENT OF THE PROJECT IS TO REPLACE AN EXISTING OUTDATED BI-PLANE ROOM AND EXPAND THE EXISTING CARDIAC CATHERIZATION SUITE TO IMPROVE FUNCTIONALITY, PATIENT FLOW, STAFF SERVICES, AND TO BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATORY LOCAL AND STATE CODE COMPLIANCES. THIS LAB WILL ALLOW BOTH CARDIAC AND NEURO INTERVENTION IN THE CASE OF HEART ATTACK OR STROKE TO REMOVE CLOTS AND IMPROVE BLOOD FLOW IN THE HEART OR BRAIN. THE NEED FOR THE BIPLANE EQUIPMENT AND EXPANSION OF THE CARDIAC LAB IS URGENT. STROKE IS THE NUMBER FIVE CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE US, KILLING MORE THAN 140,000 PEOPLE PER YEAR. NEARLY 800,000 PEOPLE ANNUALLY IN THE US ARE AFFLICTED WITH A STROKE. PROJECTIONS SHOW THAT BY 2030, STROKE PREVALENCE WILL INCREASE 20% OVER 2012 FIGURES. IN ADDITION STROKE IS A LEADING CAUSE OF LONG TERM DISABILITY, AND STROKE REDUCES MOBILITY IN MORE THAN HALF OF STROKE SURVIVORS AGE 65 AND OVER. AS THE POPULATION OF STATEN ISLAND AGES, THE NEED FOR INTERVENTIONAL STROKE CARE WILL BECOME MORE NEEDED. IN BIPLANE ANGIOGRAPHY, NON-SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS FOR STROKES AND OTHER TIME-CRITICAL CONDITIONS ARE ACCOMPLISHED QUICKLY AND WITH LESS EXPOSURE TO RADIATION BECAUSE IMAGING AND TREATMENT HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. THE IMAGE RESOLUTION ALSO IS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED, ALLOWING FOR TREATMENT OF SMALLER STROKES THAT PREVIOUSLY COULD NOT BE REACHED. A MORE PRECISE PICTURE OF A BRAIN ABNORMALITY MAKES IT EASIER TO DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR, OFTEN RESULTING IN A SHORTER HOSPITALIZATION AND FASTER RECOVERY FOR THE PATIENT. WITH THIS TECHNOLOGY, THE BIPLANE IMAGING LET PHYSICIANS GET STRAIGHT TO FIXING THE PROBLEM, WHETHER IT’S A LEAKING ANEURYSM OR BLOCKED VESSEL. PATIENTS CAN NOW GO FROM THE AMBULANCE STRAIGHT INTO THE BIPLANE CATH LAB AND RECEIVE THE CRITICAL TREATMENT THEY NEED, SAVING TIME AND BRAIN. INTERVENTIONAL STROKE CARE TO REMOVE B RAIN BLOOD CLOTS IS THE GOLD STANDARD IN STROKE CARE. PATIENT WHO RECEIVE INTERVENTIONAL THERAPY TO OPEN A BLOCKED BRAIN BLOOD VESSELS AND HAVE CLOTS REMOVED HAVE THE BEST OUTCOMES. INTERVENTIONAL THERAPY SAVE BRAIN FUNCTION; MORE PATIENTS GO HOME WITH LESS DISABILITY AND EXTENSION OF QUALITY OF LIFE. THERE IS 71% IMPROVEMENT IN GOOD NEUROLOGICAL OUTCOMES IN STROKE PATIENTS THAT HAVE INTERVENTIONAL STROKE THROMBECTOMY AS OPPOSED TO PATIENTS WITH MEDICAL MANAGEMENT WITH TISSUE PLASMINOGEN ACTIVATOR(TPA).
