CENTER FOR THE ADAPTATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF TRUST-BASED RELATIONAL INTERVENTION (TBRI) - THE CENTER FOR THE ADAPTATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF TRUST-BASED RELATIONAL INTERVENTION® (TBRI®) WILL PROVIDE NATIONAL EXPERTISE IN TRAINING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED TRAUMA TREATMENT AND SERVICE MODEL AND SUPPORT THE CONTINUUM OF CARE FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES SERVED BY CHILD WELFARE AND JUVENILE JUSTICE WITH SPECIALIZED ADAPTATIONS OF THE TBRI MODEL. THE KARYN PURVIS INSTITUTE OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT (KPICD) AT TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHILDREN’S TRAUMA ASSESSMENT CENTER (CTAC) AT WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO ADDRESS TRAUMA AMONG CHILDREN AND YOUTH THROUGH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT, AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT. THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE TBRI, A HOLISTIC, EVIDENCE-BASED MODEL OF CARE GROUNDED IN ATTACHMENT AND NEURODEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA THAT EFFECTIVELY REDUCES TRAUMA SYMPTOMS AND IMPROVES BEHAVIORAL OUTCOMES IN CHILDREN (PURVIS ET AL., 2015). THE POPULATION TO BE SERVED CONSISTS OF THE WORKFORCE IN THE FOLLOWING SERVICE SETTINGS: FOSTER CARE/ADOPTION PRESERVATION, CAREGIVER TRAINING/SUPPORT, CONGREGATE CARE, JUVENILE JUSTICE FACILITIES/SERVICES, PROBATION, AND FAMILY COURTS. THESE DISTINCT YET OVERLAPPING SECTORS WILL BE THE RECIPIENTS OF DIRECT SERVICES SUCH AS SPECIALIZED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING, CONSULTATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT DESIGNED TO EQUIP THE WORKFORCE TO RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND TO TRAUMA IN CHILDREN AND YOUTH. THE KPICD AND CTAC WILL DEVELOP AND TRAIN PROFESSIONALS IN AN INTEGRATED TRAUMA TREATMENT AND SERVICE MODEL WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF PRODUCING A STANDARDIZED PROTOCOL BY END OF YEAR 1 TO DELIVER TO PRACTITIONERS IN THE FIELD IN YEARS 2 THROUGH 5. TO FACILITATE PROGRAM SUSTAINABILITY AND FIDELITY, REFLECTIVE CONSULTATION WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: (1) DEVELOP A CONSULTATION RESOURCE HANDBOOK AND (2) HIRE AND TRAIN CONSULTANTS FROM TARGET SERVICE SECTORS. TO EXPAND TRAUMA-INFORMED TRAINING TO HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, WE WILL (1) PARTNER WITH THE DINE’ (NAVAJO NATION) TRAUMA PROJECT TO CO-CREATE AN INDIGENOUS HOLISTIC HEALING MODEL AND SUPPORT TRAUMA TRAINING AND IMPLEMENTATION TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND (2) LAUNCH AN INCLUSIVENESS INITIATIVE TO INCORPORATE AND ENGAGE A DIVERSE RANGE OF VOICES AND LIVED EXPERIENCES IN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND SERVICE DELIVERY WITH A FOCUS ON IMPROVING EQUITY, INCLUSIVENESS, AND ACCESSIBILITY. TO PROMOTE STRATEGIC COLLABORATION AND TO EQUIP THE WORKFORCE, WE WILL (1) PROVIDE NCTSN COLLABORATIVE MEMBERS WITH TBRI TRAINING AND CONSULTATION, AND (2) PARTNER WITH STAKEHOLDERS FROM CHILD- AND YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONS TO DEVELOP SPECIALIZED ADAPTATIONS OF TBRI TRAINING MATERIALS AND RESOURCES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF DISTINCT SERVICE SETTINGS AND AUDIENCES. UTILIZING THE COMBINED ANTICIPATED TRAINING AND OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES OF THE KPICD AND CTAC, WE EXPECT PROJECT IMPACT ON A NATIONAL SCALE. THIS INCLUDES 3,000 PRACTITIONERS FROM ACROSS THE U.S. TRAINED IN TBRI PRACTITIONER TRAINING (750 ANNUALLY IN YEARS 2-5), 800 INDIVIDUALS TRAINED IN INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES THROUGH THE DINE’ TRAUMA PROJECT (200 ANNUALLY IN YEARS 2-5), AND 30 PROFESSIONALS TRAINED THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH NCTSN MEMBERS.

JCOIN PHASE II TCU CLINICAL RESEARCH HUB - SUBSTANCE USE REMAINS A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY, WITH DRUG OVERDOSES CLAIMING A LIFE IN THE U.S. PROJECT SUMMARY THE CURRENT STUDY PROPOSES TO USE A HYBRID TYPE 3 IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH STRATEGY TO: 1) SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF PUBLIC HEALTH OUTCOMES [E.G., OVERDOSE INCIDENTS AND SUBSTANCE-USE (SU)- RELATED EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE (EMS) CONTACTS] AND PUBLIC SAFETY OUTCOMES (E.G., DRUG-RELATED ARRESTS) ASSOCIATED WITH DEFLECTION AND PRE-ARREST DIVERSION INITIATIVES (DPAD, HEREAFTER REFERRED TO AS DEFLECTION); AND 2) CREATE A LASTING CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELDS OF RESEARCH FOCUSED ON SU AND THE CRIMINAL LEGAL SYSTEM (CLS) BY ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE OF EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES INVOLVING THE CRITICAL ROLE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN DEFLECTION. THE HIGHLY EXPERIENCED TEAM OF MULTIPLE PIS, SENIOR-LEVEL COLLABORATORS FROM BOTH DEFLECTION AND COMMUNITY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH (CBH), STATE-LEVEL EVALUATION PARTNERS, A NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY GROUP, AND CLS AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PARTNERS WITHIN EACH COMMUNITY HAVE TEAMED UP TO CARRY OUT THE PROPOSED PROJECT. THE STUDY APPROACH USES A HYBRID IMPLEMENTATION-EFFECTIVENESS DESIGN TO EXAMINE STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE OPIOID AND STIMULANT RELEVANT OUTCOMES, AND SPECIFICALLY PROPOSES TO TEST THE IMPLEMENTATION-EFFECTIVENESS OF 2 STRATEGY BUNDLES TO PROMOTE DEFLECTION MODELS THROUGH A CORE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BUNDLE (DESIGNED TO FACILITATE COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT) AND ENHANCED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BUNDLE (CORE PLUS A COMPONENT TO SYSTEMATICALLY INVOLVE COMMUNITY ADVOCATES) ON IMPROVING IMPLEMENTATION AS WELL AS PUBLIC SAFETY AND HEALTH OUTCOMES. THE PROPOSED RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIAL INCLUDES A TOTAL OF 20 GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTINCT CLINICAL RESEARCH PERFORMANCE SITES (I.E., 20 COMMUNITIES SPANNING 5 STATES; NEW MEXICO, ILLINOIS, WISCONSIN, COLORADO, AND PENNSYLVANIA), WITH 3-5 COMMUNITIES PER STATE AND THE INCLUSION OF KEY CLS AND CBH STAKEHOLDERS WITHIN EACH SITE. THE LARGE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT WILL MAXIMIZE POTENTIAL GENERALIZABILITY OF STUDY RESULTS AND SUSTAINABILITY OF IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES. THIS STUDY IS PART OF THE NIH’S HELPING TO END ADDICTION LONG-TERM (HEAL) INITIATIVE TO SPEED SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS TO THE NATIONAL OPIOID PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS. IMPACT OF DIFFERENT LEARNING MODALITIES ON SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS' EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW DISTRICTS? DECISIONS ABOUT SCHOOL OPENINGS DURING COVID-19 IMPACTED STUDENTS AND SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THREE LEARNING MODALITIES (E.G., IN-PERSON, REMOTE, HYBRID) RELATED TO TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION WILL BE INVESTIGATED. DISTRICT AND SCHOOL LEVEL DATA WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AND TEACHER RETENTION DURING AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE COVID-19 SCHOOL CLOSURES. IN ADDITION, MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHER SELF-EFFECTIVENESS AND JOB SATISFACTION WILL BE STUDIED IN RELATION TO THE LEARNING MODALITIES. THIS PROJECT AT TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY INCLUDES A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE INSTITUTE FOR BIOMEDICAL PHILOSOPHY AND SELECTED HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS FROM ACROSS THE NINE CENSUS REGIONS OF THE U.S. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND (A) IMPLEMENTATION OF LEARNING MODALITIES UTILIZED DURING THE PROTRACTED NATIONAL EMERGENCY OF COVID-19 AND (B) THE IMPACT OF THESE DIFFERENT MODALITIES ON STEM TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION. THE THREE RESEARCH QUESTIONS ARE: (1) WHAT LEARNING MODALITIES WERE USED BY HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS BEGINNING IN FALL 2020 THROUGH SPRING 2022? (2) HOW DID UTILIZATION OF DIFFERENT LEARNING MODALITIES WITHIN A COVID-19 DICTATED TEACHING ENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTE TO STEM TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AND STEM TEACHER RETENTION IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS? AND (3) WHAT SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND RESOURCES WITHIN A COVID-19 DICTATED TEACHING ENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTE TO STEM TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AND STEM TEACHER RETENTION IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS? THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE SECONDARY DATA FROM LARGE PUBLIC DATA SETS FOR RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1 AND 2 AS WELL AS THE SELECTION OF HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. TWO-HUNDRED RESPONDENTS WILL PROVIDE DATA. THERE WILL BE THREE CASE STUDIES BOUNDED BY THE MODALITY THAT WILL EXPLORE THE COMMONALITIES WITHIN EACH CASE ASSOCIATED WITH THE THIRD RESEARCH QUESTION. FINDINGS ON BEST PRACTICES REGARDING TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS, HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE USED TO INFORM POLICY, PRACTICE, AND FUTURE DESIGN OF TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THIS TRACK 4: NOYCE RESEARCH PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. IT ALSO SUPPORTS RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS AND RETENTION OF K-12 STEM TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED BILINGUAL VOCABULARY INTERVENTION IN EMERGENT BILINGUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT OVER 45 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE U.S. SPEAK SPANISH AT HOME, YET ONLY ~5% OF SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS PROVIDE SPANISH-LANGUAGE SERVICES. THIS CRITICAL SHORTAGE LEAVES MANY EMERGENT BILINGUAL CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER (DLD) WITHOUT ACCESS TO BILINGUAL INTERVENTIONS, CONTRIBUTING TO LONG-TERM DISPARITIES IN COMMUNICATION OUTCOMES. BILINGUAL INTERVENTION SUPPORTS ROBUST LANGUAGE GROWTH IN BOTH SPANISH AND ENGLISH WITH NO LOSS OF ENGLISH GAINS, BUT IS OFTEN UNAVAILABLE DUE TO THE DEARTH OF BILINGUAL CLINICIANS, LEAVING KEY ASPECTS OF THESE CHILDREN'S LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT UNADDRESSED. TO ADDRESS THIS GAP, WE PROPOSE A TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN SOLUTION: THE COMPUTER-ASSISTED BILINGUAL VOCABULARY INTERVENTION (CABVI), AN APPROACH THAT ENABLES MONOLINGUAL CLINICIANS TO DELIVER STANDARDIZED, LINGUISTICALLY RICH BILINGUAL INSTRUCTION USING SPANISH AND ENGLISH STRATEGICALLY TO SUPPORT LEARNING AND CROSS-LINGUISTIC TRANSFER. CABVI USES INTERACTIVE, RESPONSIVE CONTENT TO SHIFT THE CLINICIAN'S ROLE FROM SOLE LANGUAGE PROVIDER TO FACILITATOR, EMPOWERING SLPS TO SUPPORT DUAL-LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT IN EMERGENT BILINGUALS WITH DLD. OUR LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO REDUCE GAPS IN CARE FOR EMERGENT BILINGUALS DLDS BY LEVERAGING SUCH SCALABLE, TECHNOLOGY-BASED STRATEGIES TO EXPAND ACCESS TO BILINGUAL INTERVENTION. THE IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVE OF THIS R01 IS TO RIGOROUSLY EVALUATE CABVI'S EFFICACY AND ECOLOGICAL VALIDITY IN A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL. AIM 1 WILL DETERMINE WHETHER EMERGENT BILINGUALS WITH DLD CHILDREN RECEIVING BILINGUAL CABVI SHOW GREATER VOCABULARY GAINS IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH THAN PEERS RECEIVING MONOLINGUAL INTERVENTIONS (EITHER TRADITIONAL ENGLISH-ONLY THERAPY OR MONOLINGUAL CABVI). AIM 2 WILL COMPARE VOCABULARY GROWTH IN EMERGENT BILINGUALS WITH DLD CHILDREN VERSUS THEIR TYPICALLY DEVELOPING BILINGUAL PEERS AFTER CABVI TO UNDERSTAND HOW DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER INFLUENCES RESPONSE TO BILINGUAL INTERVENTION. AIM 3 WILL ASSESS THE PLATFORM'S REAL-WORLD FEASIBILITY BY EXAMINING MONOLINGUAL SLPS' FIDELITY TO THE INTERVENTION PROTOCOL, AS WELL AS THEIR SATISFACTION AND CONFIDENCE USING CABVI. PRELIMINARY FINDINGS UNDERSCORE CABVI'S PROMISE: A PILOT SCHOOL IMPLEMENTATION DEMONSTRATED THAT MONOLINGUAL PROVIDERS CAN FEASIBLY DELIVER CABVI WITH HIGH FIDELITY OVER SEVERAL MONTHS, AND CHILDREN RECEIVING BILINGUAL CABVI ACHIEVED SIGNIFICANT VOCABULARY GAINS IN BOTH SPANISH AND ENGLISH WHILE MAINTAINING PROGRESS IN ENGLISH COMPARABLE TO MONOLINGUAL INTERVENTION OUTCOMES. BY VALIDATING THIS SCALABLE, LINGUISTICALLY TAILORED INTERVENTION, THE PROJECT WILL IMPROVE ACCESS TO THIS POPULATION FOR APPROPRIATE THERAPY, ENHANCE THEIR BILINGUAL COMMUNICATION OUTCOMES, AND INFORM FUTURE SCALABLE CLINICAL MODELS THAT LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY TO BRIDGE CLINICIAN-LANGUAGE GAPS - DIRECTLY ALIGNING WITH NIDCD PRIORITIES TO DEVELOP EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS AND IMPROVE ACCESS TO EVIDENCE-BASED CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CHEMICAL HISTORY OF THE MILKY WAY AS SEEN THROUGH OPEN CLUSTERS USING SDSS AND GAIA -THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE GALAXIES CHANGE AND GROW. ASTRONOMERS ARE WORKING TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE CHEMICAL MAKE-UP OF THE STARS WITHIN GALAXIES CHANGE WITH TIME. BY MEASURING HOW, AND WHEN, SPECIFIC ELEMENTS INCREASE, THE INVESTIGATORS WILL CREATE 'CHEMICAL CLOCKS' THAT TRACE THE CHEMICAL CHANGES DURING THE LIFE OF THE MILKY WAY GALAXY. THIS RESEARCH TEAM WILL MEASURE THE CHEMICAL MAKEUP OF NEARLY ALL THE SUITABLE STAR CLUSTERS IN THE MILKY WAY DISK. THIS PROJECT WILL SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST AND PROMOTE THE PROGRESS OF RESEARCH IN ASTRONOMY BY PROVIDING A UNIQUE CATALOG THAT CAN BE USED TO PROBE THE HISTORY OF THE MILKY WAY. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL CARRY OUT MENTORING AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH AND AT TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY'S MONNIG METEORITE GALLERY. THEY WILL ALSO TRAIN GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN MODERN DATA SCIENCE RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES. USING HIGH-RESOLUTION SPECTROSCOPY FROM THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY V (SDSS-V) AND ASTROMETRY FROM THE GAIA SATELLITE, THIS RESEARCH TEAM WILL OBSERVE, COMPILE, AND ANALYZE A CATALOG OF OPEN STAR CLUSTERS. THIS CATALOG WILL BE REVOLUTIONARY IN ITS SIZE AND UNIFORMITY. ADDITIONAL HIGH-RESOLUTION OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY WILL SUPPLEMENT THE SDSS-V DATA WITH NEUTRON-CAPTURE ELEMENTAL ABUNDANCES TO CREATE A UNIQUE CATALOG COMPRISING UP TO 90% OF THE GAIA-CONFIRMED OPEN STAR CLUSTERS WITH HOMOGENEOUS DATA, INCLUDING CONSISTENTLY MEASURED AGES, DISTANCES, REDDENING, DYNAMICS, AND DETAILED ABUNDANCES FOR MORE THAN 20 ELEMENTS. THIS DATA SET, WHICH WILL BE PUBLICLY RELEASED, WILL PROVIDE KEY CONSTRAINTS ON WHETHER CHEMICAL TAGGING CAN WORK IN THE MILKY WAY DISK, ON THE PARTICIPATION OF OPEN CLUSTERS IN RADIAL MIGRATION, AND ON SUPERNOVAE ELEMENT YIELDS. THE CATALOG WILL BE USED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND STELLAR FEEDBACK OVER TIME AND TEST COSMOLOGICAL MODELS OF GALAXIES LIKE OUR MILKY WAY. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

BIOCOMPATIBLE GRAPHENE QUANTUM DOTS FOR NONINVASIVE NEAR-INFRARED BIOIMAGING - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT NEAR-INFRARED (NIR) IMAGING IS ONE OF THE MOST RAPIDLY DEVELOPING PERSPECTIVE TECHNIQUES IN BIOMEDICAL DIAGNOSTICS ENABLING 10 - 100 TIMES DEEPER TISSUE IMAGING THAN REGULAR VISIBLE FLUORESCENCE TECHNIQUES. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT CLINICAL NEED FOR SUCH IMAGING: HIGH-DEPTH CT AND MRI IMAGING STRATEGIES ARE COMPLEX AND LESS SUITABLE FOR LOW-DEPTH BIOSENSING AND INTRAOPERATIVE APPLICATIONS. FURTHERMORE, IN ANIMAL STUDIES NIR IMAGING CAN ENABLE IN SITU FLUORESCENCE TRACKING OF TESTED THERAPEUTICS OR TUMOR VISUALIZATION INSIDE A LIVING SMALL ANIMAL. HOWEVER, AS NIR IMAGING FIELD IS STILL DEVELOPING, THERE IS A LACK OF BIOCOMPATIBLE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL PLATFORMS SUITABLE FOR IMAGING, SENSING AND EVEN DRUG TRANSPORT HIGHLY DESIRED IN ANIMAL STUDIES. IN THIS PROJECT WE WILL DEVELOP AND TEST THE FEASIBILITY OF A NOVEL NIR IMAGING PLATFORM BASED ON GRAPHENE QUANTUM DOTS (GQDS) ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL NEEDS OF NIR BIOIMAGING: FLUORESCENCE IN THE NIR (ABOVE 950 NM) WITH NIR EXCITATION, HIGH BIOCOMPATIBILITY, PHOTOSTABILITY, AND CAPABILITIES FOR DRUG TRACING AND IN VIVO NIR IMAGING IN LIVE ANIMAL MODELS. THIS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN 3 STEPS: (1) SYNTHESIZING NIR-EMISSIVE GQDS VIA BOTTOM-UP AND TOP-DOWN APPROACHES AND CHARACTERIZING THEIR OPTICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, (2) TESTING GQDS FOR NIR IN VITRO IMAGING AND ASSESSING THEIR BIOCOMPATIBILITY AND (3) PERFORMING IN VIVO IMAGING OF GQD NIR FLUORESCENCE IN LIVE ANIMALS AS WELL AS EX VIVO ORGAN TISSUE IMAGING QUANTIFYING GQD CONTENT IN EXCISED ORGANS. WE WILL CONCOMITANTLY ASSESS POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS TO SELECT NON-TOXIC GQD CANDIDATES. THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS A VARIETY OF SYNTHESIZED GQD STRUCTURES WILL UNDERGO RIGOROUS 3-STEP SELECTION FOR THE CAPABILITIES OF (1) HIGH YIELD NIR FLUORESCENCE, (2) HIGH BIOCOMPATIBILITY AND NIR IMAGING IN CELLS, (3) NIR IMAGING INSIDE A LIVE SEDATED ANIMAL WITH MINIMAL/NO TOXICITY. THE SELECTED GQD CANDIDATES WILL ENABLE IN VIVO ANIMAL TESTING OF THERAPEUTIC DELIVERY WITH NONINVASIVE REAL-TIME IMAGE TRACKING REDUCING THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS SACRIFICED. IN A LONGER TERM, WE EXPECT THESE GQD PLATFORMS TO BECOME A BASIS OF THE NONINVASIVE NIR IN VIVO SENSING IN PATIENTS. AS A RESULT, THE PROPOSED INITIATIVE WILL ADDRESS SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND ITS DEVELOPMENT WILL ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF HUMAN HEALTH.

EXAMINING THE MEDIATING AND MODERATING FACTORS IN THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT AND ENDS USE AND DEPENDENCE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT ELECTRONIC NICOTINE DELIVERY SYSTEMS (ENDS) USE BY YOUNG ADULTS HAS SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS AND SURPASSED THAT OF OLDER ADULTS IN 2014. RECENT YEARS HAVE WITNESSED A SHIFT IN PROMOTION OF ENDS PRODUCTS FROM TRADITIONAL MEDIA TO SOCIAL MEDIA (SM). YOUNG ADULTS ARE HEAVY SM USERS, WHO ARE VULNERABLE TO PERSUASIVE ADVERTISING MESSAGES BECAUSE THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THE SELLING INTENT OF WELL- PRODUCED SM ADVERTISING. MOREOVER, ADVERTISING OF ENDS PRODUCTS ON SM IS CURRENTLY UNREGULATED. YOUNG ADULTS ALSO ARE MORE LIKELY THAN ALL OTHER AGE GROUPS TO USE OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS (E.G., CIGARETTES, CIGARS) AND REPORT DEPRESSION; AND CLOSE PEERS CONTINUE TO INFLUENCE THEIR ENDS USE. ALTHOUGH THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT EXPOSURE TO AND ENGAGEMENT WITH ENDS INFORMATION ON SM ARE SIGNIFICANTLY ASSOCIATED WITH ENDS USE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS, THERE IS A PAUCITY OF MULTI-WAVE LONGITUDINAL RESEARCH EXAMINING THE MEDIATORS AND MODERATORS OF THESE ASSOCIATIONS. THERE IS A CRITICAL NEED FOR LONGITUDINAL RESEARCH TO A) EXAMINE THE COGNITIVE FACTORS THAT EXPLAIN, OR MEDIATE, THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN EXPOSURE TO AND ENGAGEMENT WITH ENDS INFORMATION ON SM AND SUBSEQUENT ENDS USE AND DEPENDENCE (SM-ENDS ASSOCIATIONS), AND B) DETERMINE WHETHER THE MEDIATED ASSOCIATIONS VARY, OR ARE MODERATED, BY INTRA- OR INTERPERSONAL FACTORS TO GUIDE POLICY-MAKING AND ANTI-ENDS CAMPAIGN MESSAGE DESIGN. THUS, THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS R15 IS TO IDENTIFY THE MEDIATORS AND MODERATORS OF THE LONGITUDINAL ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN SM AND SUBSEQUENT ENDS USE AND DEPENDENCE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS. BASED ON THE REASONED ACTION APPROACH, WE WILL EXAMINE COGNITIVE FACTORS (NORMATIVE BELIEFS, BENEFIT BELIEFS, AND HARM BELIEFS OF USING ENDS) AS MEDIATORS, AND INVESTIGATE INTRA-PERSONAL (I.E., SEX, OTHER TOBACCO USE, DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS) AND INTERPERSONAL (I.E., ENDS USE AMONG CLOSE FRIENDS) FACTORS AS MODERATORS. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECTS ARE TO 1) IDENTIFY THE COGNITIVE MEDIATORS OF THE LONGITUDINAL SM-ENDS ASSOCIATIONS, AND 2) DETERMINE THE INTRA- AND INTER-PERSONAL MODERATORS OF THE INDIRECT ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN EXPOSURE TO AND ENGAGEMENT WITH ENDS INFORMATION ON SM AND SUBSEQUENT ENDS USE AND DEPENDENCE ONE YEAR LATER THROUGH COGNITIONS. DATA FOR THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL BE DRAWN FROM A THREE-WAVE, BI-ANNUAL LONGITUDINAL STUDY THAT TRACKS A NATIONALLY-REPRESENTATIVE COHORT OF 1,000 18-30-YEAR-OLDS YOUNG ADULTS. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT AT LEAST ONE GRADUATE STUDENT AND THREE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN EACH OF THE THREE YEARS, WHO WILL RECEIVE TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP ON SYNTHESIZING LITERATURE, DESIGNING STUDIES, PROGRAMMING AND PILOT TESTING SURVEYS, ANALYZING DATA, AND REPORTING FINDINGS EFFECTIVELY IN ORAL AND WRITTEN FORMATS, WHICH WILL BENEFIT THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. IF SUCCESSFUL, THE FINDINGS WILL SERVE AS THE BASIS FOR A SUBSEQUENT R01 TO DESIGN AND EVALUATE SM-BASED ENDS CAMPAIGN MESSAGES TARGETING YOUNG ADULTS AND THE SIGNIFICANT MEDIATORS AND MODERATORS. YOUNG ADULTHOOD IS THE PERIOD WHEN THE PATHWAY TO LIFELONG TOBACCO USE IS ESTABLISHED. THE LONG- TERM GOAL IS TO PREVENT AND REDUCE ENDS USE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS BEFORE IT IS ESTABLISHED.

THE ROLE OF FAMILY CONTEXTUAL FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMOTION REGULATION IN YOUNG CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT THE MAJORITY OF CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM HAVE A CO-OCCURRING MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER AND EMOTION DYSREGULATION IS POSITED TO SERVE AS A RISK FACTOR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS. HOWEVER, REGULATING EMOTIONS IS A DYNAMIC PROCESS THAT IS INFLUENCED BY THE INTERPLAY OF CHILD CHARACTERISTICS AND THE FAMILY CONTEXT AND THERE IS A PAUCITY OF RESEARCH EXAMINING THESE PROCESSES IN CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. THE LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE CO-OCCURRENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS IN CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE IN THIS APPLICATION IS TO CLARIFY THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN THE FAMILY CONTEXT AND CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT OF EMOTION REGULATION. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT THE STRENGTH AND DIRECTION OF THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN THE FAMILY CONTEXT AND EMOTION REGULATION DEPEND UPON CHILDREN’S CHARACTERISTICS, INCLUDING AUTISM DIAGNOSTIC STATUS AND THE HETEROGENEITY OF AUTISM SYMPTOM SEVERITY. THE RATIONALE FOR THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS THAT ONCE WE IDENTIFY CONTEXTUAL FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH EMOTION REGULATION, AND FOR WHOM THEY ARE APPLICABLE TO, THEN WE CAN DEVELOP APPROPRIATE INTERVENTIONS TO REDUCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF CO-OCCURRING MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED BY PURSUING TWO SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) IDENTIFY WHETHER DYNAMICS OF EMOTION REGULATION DIFFER FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM COMPARED TO NON-ASD CHILDREN AND WHETHER, AMONG CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM, SUCH DYNAMICS VARY AS A FUNCTION OF CHILD CHARACTERISTICS; AND 2) IDENTIFY THE EXTENT TO WHICH ASPECTS OF THE FAMILY CONTEXT, PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED IN NT CHILDREN, ARE ASSOCIATED WITH EMOTION REGULATION AND WHETHER CHILD CHARACTERISTICS MODERATE THESE ASSOCIATIONS. THE PI’S PRELIMINARY STUDIES INDICATE STRONG FEASIBILITY OF RECRUITING A SAMPLE OF YOUNG CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM AND MEASURING EMOTION REGULATION. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL INCLUDE 220 CHILDREN (110 ASD; 110 NON-ASD) AND THEIR PARENTS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS INNOVATIVE, IN THE APPLICANT’S OPINION, BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS A SUBSTANTIVE DEPARTURE FROM THE STATUS QUO BY USING A MULTI-METHOD DESIGN TO UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF EMOTION REGULATION IN CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM AND IDENTIFYING WHICH CHILDREN ARE MOST AT RISK FOR DIFFICULTIES REGULATING EMOTIONS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT IS EXPECTED TO INFORM EFFORTS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM.

ANATOMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF DYSLEXIA-GENE DCDC2 KNOCKOUT IN A RAT MODEL - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT DYSLEXIA (DYS) IS A COMMON DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER WITH A STRONG GENETIC COMPONENT WHICH CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL SUCCESS AS WELL AS EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. CHILDREN WITH THIS DISORDER HAVE READING SCORES THAT ARE AT LEAST 1 STANDARD DEVIATION BELOW THEIR AGE- AND GRADE- MATCHED PEERS. IN SPITE OF THESE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERION, THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF HETEROGENEITY WITHIN THIS LABEL, BOTH WITH REGARD TO THE SEVERITY OF THE CORE DEFICIT(S) AS WELL AS IN THE GENETIC BASIS OF THE DISORDER. THIS HETEROGENEITY, COMBINED WITH A LACK OF A STRONG UNDERSTANDING OF THESE MECHANISMS, LEADS TO A ONE-SIZE-FITS ALL APPROACH TO INTERVENTION AND A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF INDIVIDUALS DO NOT RESPOND TO THE INTERVENTION OPTION OFFERED. ASSOCIATION STUDIES IN HUMANS SUGGEST THAT THE DYSLEXIA- SUSCEPTIBILITY GENE DCDC2 IS ASSOCIATED WITH ANATOMICAL DEFICITS IN THE BRAIN AS WELL AS DEFICITS ON TASKS THAT REQUIRE SPEED. THE CURRENT STUDIES WILL EVALUATE WHETHER THIS GENE IS CAUSALLY RELATED TO THESE DEFICITS BY UTILIZING A NOVEL KNOCKOUT RAT MODEL RECENTLY DEVELOPED BY THE PI. IF IT IS CONFIRMED THAT THIS GENE DOES IMPACT ANATOMY AND RAPID AUDITORY PROCESSING, IT WOULD SUGGEST THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH DYSLEXIA THAT CARRY A VARIANT IN THIS GENE MAY RESPOND MORE EFFECTIVELY TO INTERVENTIONS TARGETING THESE SPECIFIC SKILLS.

TRANSLARYNGEAL VIBRATION FOR HYPERFUNCTIONAL VOICE DISORDERS - PROJECT SUMMARY / ABSTRACT HIGH-QUALITY RESEARCH DESIGNS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT VOICE THERAPY HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON HYPERFUNCTIONAL VOICE DISORDERS ASSOCIATED WITH MUSCLE TENSION DYSPHONIA (MTD). AMONG THE OPTIONS OF BEHAVIORAL VOICE THERAPY FOR MTD, ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES IS FLOW PHONATION (A.K.A., STRETCH-AND- FLOW VOICE THERAPY). HOWEVER, THE PHENOMENON OF POST-TREATMENT OUTCOME MEASURES REMAINING SUBSTANTIALLY OUTSIDE THE RANGE OF NORMAL IS A UBIQUITOUS FINDING IN STUDIES INVESTIGATING THIS AND OTHER VOICE THERAPY APPROACHES. FROM BOTH A COST BURDEN AND QUALITY OF LIFE PERSPECTIVE, THIS PHENOMENON SUPPORTS A NEED TO DEVELOP AND REFINE VOICE THERAPY TREATMENT APPROACHES TO PROMOTE BETTER OUTCOMES. VIBRATION IS A PHYSICAL MODALITY THAT HAS A HISTORICAL USE IN THE REHABILITATION PROFESSIONS, BUT ONLY RECENTLY HAS IT BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY STUDIED AS A MODALITY FOR VOICE THERAPY WHEN USED BY SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS. WHEN APPLIED LOCALLY ON THE PERILARYNGEAL SURFACE AS A LOCAL TRANSLARYNGEAL VIBRATION THERAPY (LTLV), EARLY RESEARCH HAS DEMONSTRATED BENEFICIAL EFFECTS ON VOICE PHYSIOLOGY AND CLINICAL OUTCOMES. FURTHER HIGH-QUALITY CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDIES ARE NEEDED TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF LTLV AS A MODALITY FOR VOICE DISORDERS AND TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS OF VIBRATION AND EFFECTIVE VIBRATION DOSE ON VOICE REHABILITATION OUTCOMES. THE RESEARCH PROPOSED IN THIS R15 HAS THE POTENTIAL TO TRANSFORM CLINICAL PRACTICE OF TREATMENT FOR MTD, THE MOST COMMON VOICE DISORDER AMONG TREATMENT-SEEKING POPULATIONS. THAT POTENTIAL IS VESTED IN THE PURSUIT OF THREE SPECIFIC AIMS: (1) DETERMINE THE CLINICAL EFFICACY OF LTLV AS A CONCURRENT TREATMENT USING FLOW PHONATION VOICE THERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH MTD, AND (2) DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF TREATMENT DOSE ON CLINICAL RESPONSE ASSOCIATED WITH TREATMENT OUTCOMES. CRYPTOCOCCAL MENINGOENCEPHALITIS IS THE MOST COMMON DISSEMINATED FUNGAL DISEASE IN AIDS PATIENTS AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR 15% OF AIDS-RELATED DEATHS GLOBALLY. BECAUSE HOST IMMUNE RESPONSES ARE SO VITAL TO THE CONTROL OF CRYPTOCOCCOSIS, THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF OUR LABORATORY IS TO DETERMINE THE MECHANISM(S) NECESSARY TO ELICIT PROTECTIVE IMMUNITY AGAINST C. NEOFORMANS INFECTIONS IN IMMUNE DEFICIENT HOSTS. TO THIS END, STUDIES IN OUR LABORATORY EMPLOY A C. NEOFORMANS STRAIN ENGINEERED TO EXPRESS INTERFERON (IFN)-, DESIGNATED H99, AS A MODEL SYSTEM TO DEFINE PROTECTIVE IMMUNE RESPONSES AGAINST C. NEOFORMANS. PUBLISHED STUDIES BY OUR LAB DEMONSTRATED THAT IMMUNIZATION WITH H99 INDUCES PROTECTIVE IMMUNITY AGAINST CRYPTOCOCCOSIS IN MICE ALTOGETHER DEFICIENT IN B CELLS, CD4+ T CELLS, CD8+ T CELLS, NK CELLS AND NEUTROPHILS. PRELIMINARY RESULTS PROVIDED HEREIN SUGGEST THAT CONVENTIONAL DC1 CELLS (CDC1S) ARE CRITICAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MACROPHAGE ANTI- MICROBIAL ACTIVITY, OPTIMAL T CELL RESPONSES AND THE INDUCTION OF PROTECTIVE IMMUNITY AGAINST CRYPTOCOCCOSIS. TAKEN TOGETHER, OUR RESULTS LEAD US TO HYPOTHESIZE THAT CDC1S ARE CRITICAL FOR THE ELICITATION OF PROTECTIVE VACCINE-MEDIATED IMMUNE RESPONSES AGAINST CRYPTOCOCCOSIS IN CD4+ T CELL DEFICIENT HOSTS. THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR HYPOTHESIS IS SUPPORTED BY A SCIENTIFICALLY RIGOROUS SET OF PUBLISHED AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS THAT DEMONSTRATE THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF STRATEGIES THAT PRIME CDC1S TO ELICIT PROTECTIVE IMMUNITY AGAINST CRYPTOCOCCOSIS IN IMMUNE DEFICIENT HOSTS. A COMPLICATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE INITIATION OF ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY (ART) IN HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS WITH CM IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF IMMUNE RECONSTITUTION INFLAMMATORY SYNDROME (IRIS) WHICH CAN LEAD TO SEVERE NEUROLOGICAL SEQUELA, MORBIDITY, AND SIGNIFICANT MORTALITY. IRIS AFFLICTS UP TO 30% OF HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS WITH A PRIOR DIAGNOSIS OF CRYPTOCOCCOSIS WHO BEGIN ART. CURRENT EFFORTS TO MITIGATE CRYPTOCOCCUS-RELATED IRIS (C-IRIS) INCLUDE DELAYING INITIATION OF ART UNTIL STERILE IMMUNITY IS ACHIEVED, AND/OR USING CORTICOSTEROID AND/OR NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDS) AS ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AGENTS TO PREVENT C-IRIS. SIGNIFICANT DRAWBACKS TO THESE EFFORTS ARE THAT DELAYING ART THERAPY IN HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS ALLOWS THE VIRUS TO PROPAGATE UNCHECKED AND ANTI- INFLAMMATORY DRUGS CAN INHIBIT HOST IMMUNE RESPONSES AND POTENTIALLY REDUCE ANTI-CRYPTOCOCCAL DRUG ACTIVITY. THUS, THERAPIES THAT ALLOW FOR ART INITIATION AT THE ONSET OF DIAGNOSIS, DO NOT INHIBIT THE EFFICACY OF ANTIFUNGAL DRUGS OR PROTECTIVE ANTI-CRYPTOCOCCAL HOST RESPONSES, AND PREVENT DELETERIOUS INFLAMMATORY RESPONSES WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT TOWARDS REDUCING MORBIDITY ASSOCIATED WITH C-IRIS. PRELIMINARY STUDIES IN OUR LABORATORY SHOW THAT INHIBITION OF 5- LIPOXYGENASE (5-LO) ACTIVITY RESULTS IN A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE NEUROLOGICAL DETERIORATION, MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY ASSOCIATED WITH CM. SPECIFICALLY, STUDIES USING AN EXPERIMENTAL MOUSE MODEL OF CRYPTOCOCCOSIS SHOW THAT 5-LO KNOCKOUT (KO) MICE, IN CONTRAST TO WILD-TYPE (WT) MICE, DO NOT EXHIBIT THE CLASSIC NEUROLOGICAL SEQUELA OR MORTALITY ASSOCIATED WITH CM. MOREOVER, MYELOID CELL INFILTRATION AND THE PRODUCTION OF CHEMOKINES ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF C- IRIS IN HUMANS (I.E., CCL2 AND CCL3) WERE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN BRAIN TISSUES OF 5-LO KO MICE COMPARED TO WT MICE. TAKEN TOGETHER, THESE RESULTS LEAD US TO HYPOTHESIZE THAT INHIBITION OF 5-LO SIGNALING REDUCES THE NEUROLOGICAL INFLAMMATORY SEQUELAE LEADING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF C-IRIS. TO TEST OUR HYPOTHESIS, WE PROPOSE TO: 1) DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF 5- LO BLOCKADE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF C-IRIS AND 2) DEMONSTRATE THE THERAPEUTIC IMPACT OF 5-LO INHIBITORS AS AN ADJUNCT TO ANTIFUNGAL THERAPY USING A MURINE MODEL OF C-IRIS.

REMARKABLY, IN THE WORLD OF MOLECULAR MACHINES AND TOPOLOGIES, HINGES ARE LARGELY UNEXPLORED. THIS RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP COMPUTATIONAL MODELS TO PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO AN EXPERIMENTAL TRAINING SET WHEREIN CONFORMATION AND DYNAMICS OF MOLECULAR HINGES ARE BOTH UNDERSTOOD, MEASURABLE AND TUNABLE. BROADER IMPACTS INCLUDE 1) INFORMING DESIGN OF NEW ORGANIC MATERIALS, AND 2) CROSS-TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN BOTH EXPERIMENTAL SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND COMPUTATION. THE PROJECT WILL COMMENCE WITH 24-ATOM MACROCYCLES FOR WHICH A RICH EXPERIMENTAL DATA SET EXISTS. THESE MOLECULAR DOOR HINGES PRESENT TWO FLAT LEAVES CONNECTED WITH FLEXIBLE DOMAINS THAT SERVE AS THE HINGE PIN. THIS MODEL SYSTEM IS COMPELLING BASED ON EASE OF SYNTHESIS, DIVERSITY OF TARGETS, AND PREDICTABLE BEHAVIORS. BY IDENTIFYING BARRIERS AND BRIDGES FOR WOMEN STEM FACULTY, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO PRODUCE INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE THAT WILL IMPACT NOT ONLY STEM, BUT ALSO ALL WOMEN FACULTY AT TCU. MORE BROADLY, AS ANY INSTITUTION DEVELOPS AN ENVIRONMENT OF EQUITY AS THE NORM, GRADUATES OF MASTER AND DOCTORAL PROGRAMS WILL ENTER THEIR ACADEMIC CAREERS WITH A MINDSET OF EQUITY WHICH HAS THE POTENTIAL TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF WOMEN STEM FACULTY. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL USE HIGH-RESOLUTION COSMOLOGICAL SIMULATIONS TO TRACK THE ORBITAL DYNAMICS OF LONG-LASTING OPEN STAR CLUSTERS ACROSS TIME AND SPACE. THEY WILL EXAMINE HOW AN EVOLVING POTENTIAL AND GALACTIC ENVIRONMENT IMPACT THE ORBITAL TRAJECTORY OF STAR CLUSTERS. THEY WILL ALSO ASSESS THE RELIABILITY OF TRADITIONAL ORBIT MODELING TECHNIQUES, SPECIFICALLY ORBIT INTEGRATION USING A FIXED POTENTIAL, TO ACCURATELY TRACE THE LOCATION AND HISTORY OF STELLAR SYSTEMS OLDER THAN 1 GYR. THIS RESEARCH WILL GENERATE A COMPREHENSIVE MULTI-SCALE PERSPECTIVE INTO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STAR CLUSTER DYNAMICS AND THE EVOLVING GALACTIC POTENTIAL. OPERATOR ALGEBRAS ORIGINALLY SERVED AS A ROBUST MATHEMATICAL FRAMEWORK DEVELOPED BY VON NEUMANN AND OTHERS TO MODEL HEISENBERG'S APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS, AND THEIR STUDY IS A VITAL PART OF MODERN ANALYSIS. ENDURING INTEREST IN THIS AREA OF RESEARCH CENTERS LARGELY ON ITS MANY CONNECTIONS AND APPLICATIONS TO OTHER MATHEMATICAL AND SCIENTIFIC FIELDS. OPERATOR ALGEBRAS CAN BE CONSTRUCTED FROM, AND IN SOME CASES ENCODE, MANY IMPORTANT MATHEMATICAL STRUCTURES SUCH AS SYMMETRIES, TIME-EVOLVING SYSTEMS, GRAPHS, AND NUMBER FIELDS. THEY ALSO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN AREAS LIKE QUANTUM COMPUTING AND CONDENSED-MATTER PHYSICS. A PRIMARY FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS ON DISCERNING THE FINE STRUCTURE OF INFINITE-DIMENSIONAL OPERATOR ALGEBRAS THROUGH APPROXIMATIONS BY SIMPLER, FINITE-DIMENSIONAL MODELS. THE PROJECT INVOLVES MENTORING OF EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS THROUGH GUIDED INVESTIGATIONS AND COLLABORATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES. THE RESEARCH FOCUSES ON ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RECENT RESULTS IN OPERATOR ALGEBRAS, NAMELY THE CLASSIFICATION OF SIMPLE AMENABLE C*-ALGEBRAS OF FINITE NON-COMMUTATIVE COVERING DIMENSION. CONNES' FIELDS MEDAL-WINNING WORK ON THE STRUCTURE AND CLASSIFICATION OF AMENABLE VON NEUMANN ALGEBRAS IN THE 1970S REMAINS FUNDAMENTAL TO MODERN VON NEUMANN ALGEBRA THEORY, AND IN THE TOPOLOGICAL SETTING OF C*-ALGEBRAS, THE ELLIOTT CLASSIFICATION PROGRAM WAS INITIATED IN THE 1990S SEEKING ANALOGOUS RESULTS FOR SIMPLE AMENABLE C*-ALGEBRAS. THIS LARGE-SCALE, WORLDWIDE ENDEAVOR RECENTLY CULMINATED IN THE COMPLETE CLASSIFICATION OF SEPARABLE, SIMPLE, NUCLEAR, Z-STABLE C*-ALGEBRAS IN THE UCT CLASS. AS TRAFFIC INCIDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 25% OF ALL TRAFFIC DELAYS, COSTING THE UNITED STATES ECONOMY AN ESTIMATED $87 BILLION ANNUALLY, AN ACCURATE AND EXPLAINABLE PREDICTIVE SOLUTION CAN HELP MITIGATE THESE DEVASTATING SPATIOTEMPORAL IMPACTS BY ENABLING QUICKER RESPONSE TIMES FROM EMERGENCY SERVICES, MORE EFFECTIVE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, AND BETTER PUBLIC ADVISORIES. ADVANCED ANALYTICS AND MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS CAN ANALYZE REAL-WORLD DATA TO FORECAST THE SEVERITY AND DURATION OF SPATIOTEMPORAL EVENTS THAT OCCURRED WITHIN THE CYBER-PHYSICAL-SOCIAL SYSTEMS, THEREBY AIDING IN THE ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES AND REDUCING BOTH HUMAN AND ECONOMIC LOSSES. THE PRIMARY INNOVATION OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE ITS ABILITY TO LEARN THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRAFFIC INCIDENTS AND HOW THEIR IMPACT WILL CASCADE AMONG THE GEOMETRIC STRUCTURE OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AND EXTRACT UNDERSTANDABLE RULES AND PATTERNS FOR DECISION-MAKERS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO GATHER AND ANALYZE EXTENSIVE TRAFFIC DATA FROM VARIOUS HETEROGENEOUS PLATFORMS TO LEARN MORE REPRESENTATIVE EMBEDDINGS OF TRAFFIC INCIDENTS. THE GOAL IS TO CREATE A RANGE OF INTERPRETABLE GRAPH MINING AND MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES THAT CAN ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CASCADING IMPACTS NOT ONLY IN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS BUT ALSO ACROSS HETEROGENOUS CYBER-PHYSICAL-SOCIAL SYSTEMS. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP 1) A NOVEL MULTIMODAL REPRESENTATION LEARNING APPROACH COMBINING MACHINE LEARNING AND GRAPH MINING TO LEARN THE TEXT-ENRICHED EMBEDDING OF THE TRAFFIC EVENTS FROM HETEROGENOUS SOCIAL/NEWS MEDIA AND TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS, 2) NOVEL SPATIOTEMPORAL DATA MINING AND TRANSFORMER-BASED GRAPH NEURAL NETWORK METHODS TO DETECT TRANSPORTATION EVENTS AND THEIR CASCADING IMPACTS ON HETEROGENEOUS TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS, 3) A NEW PHYSICS-INFORMED MACHINE LEARNING SOLUTION TO MODEL THE CASCADING IMPACTS WITH THE KORTEWEG-DE VRIES (KDV) EQUATION AND INJECT MODEL INTERPRETABILITY WHILE FORECASTING THE TRAFFIC EVENTS IN SPECIFIC SCENARIOS. THE PROPOSED PHYSICS-INFORMED MACHINE LEARNING SOLUTIONS COULD DECOUPLE THE MODEL'S DEPENDENCIES ON LARGE DATASETS SO THAT THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN LESS REPRESENTED/RURAL AREAS COULD SWIFTLY INFER ACCURATE FUTURE STATUSES WHEN FAILURE HAPPENS. THESE ADVANCEMENTS WILL MAKE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELDS OF EXPLAINABLE GRAPH MINING, PHYSICS-INFORMED MACHINE LEARNING, AND SPATIOTEMPORAL EVENT ANALYSIS. THIS TREND IS BOUND TO CONTINUE: MANY OPEN-SOURCE FRAMEWORKS AND TOOLS FROM ONLINE CODE REPOSITORIES ARE EMBEDDED WITH DEEP LEARNING MODULES. HOWEVER, MANY DEEP LEARNING MODELS CONTAIN HIDDEN WEAKNESSES THAT COULD BE EXPLOITED BY ATTACKS, POSING SIGNIFICANT RISKS TO USER PRIVACY AND SAFETY. IT IS ESSENTIAL, THEREFORE, TO RAISE SECURITY AWARENESS AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS, WHO ARE THE FUTURE DATA ENGINEERING PRACTITIONERS, AND EQUIP THEM WITH KNOWLEDGE AND STRATEGIES FOR DESIGNING TRUSTWORTHY, DEEP LEARNING BASED APPLICATIONS. THIS PROJECT RESPONDS TO THE URGENT NEED IN THREE CRITICAL AREAS: INTEGRITY, CONFIDENTIALITY AND EQUITY (ICE). A SERIES OF EASY-TO-IMPLEMENT EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES CONCRETIZE LEARNERS? AWARENESS OF POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES IN DEEP LEARNING MODELS AND ENHANCE THEIR ABILITY TO BUILD SECURE APPLICATIONS OF THEIR OWN. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE EXPRESSLY DESIGNED FOR LEARNERS WITH LITTLE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, AND ARE STREAMLINED TO REDUCE PREPARATION TIME AND COST FOR THE INSTRUCTOR. THE ACTIVITIES? FLEXIBILITY MAXIMIZES THE EQUITABLE DISSEMINATION OF RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE THAT IS CRITICAL TO SOCIETY. THE INVESTIGATORS ARE ESPECIALLY MINDFUL OF THE NEEDS OF MINORITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENT POPULATIONS. A TOTAL OF TWELVE LEARNING ACTIVITY SETS ADDRESS A WIDE ARRAY OF ISSUES ARISING IN ICE AREAS. FOR DATA INTEGRITY, THREATS POSED BY ADVERSARIAL EXAMPLES, DATA POISONING, AND BACKDOOR HIDDEN FEATURES ARE TACKLED. THE EMPHASIS ON EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ALLOWS LEARNERS TO BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH THE PROCESS AND EFFECTS OF ATTACKS BEFORE LEARNERS ARE EQUIPPED WITH STRATEGIES AND TRAINED TO IMPLEMENT PROPER DEFENSE. TO ENHANCE CONFIDENTIALITY, LEARNERS FIRST ENCOUNTER AT LEAST TWO POTENTIAL SOURCES OF PRIVACY LEAKAGE, DATASET OVERFITTING AND ABUSIVE QUERYING, AND ARE THEN TAUGHT PREVENTATIVE COUNTERMEASURES. BOTH SAMPLE BIASES AND ALGORITHMIC BIASES IN DEEP LEARNING MODELS ARE ADDRESSED IN THE LEARNING ACTIVITIES. CONVERTING LIGNIN, A LARGELY UNDERUTILIZED YET CHEMICALLY RICH BYPRODUCT OF THE BIOREFINING INDUSTRY, TO VALUABLE AROMATIC PLATFORM CHEMICALS IS AN ENERGY-INTENSIVE PROCESS THAT HAS MADE THIS APPROACH COST PROHIBITIVE. RECENTLY, DYE-SENSITIZED PHOTOELECTROSYNTHETIC CELLS (SIMILAR TO PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS) HAVE EMERGED AS A LOW-COST AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY FOR CONVERTING SOLAR ENERGY INTO CHEMICAL FUELS OR ELECTRICITY. THESE PHOTOELECTROCHEMICAL CELLS OFFER A MEANS OF USING RENEWABLE SOLAR ENERGY TO DRIVE ENERGY-INTENSIVE CHEMICAL CONVERSIONS AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE. HERE, THE COLLABORATIVE FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH PROJECT WILL STUDY HOW A DYE-SENSITIZED PHOTOANODE CAN CHEMOSELECTIVELY OXIDIZE LIGNIN WITH A SUITABLE CATALYST AS A FIRST STEP TOWARD A COMPLETE LIGHT-DRIVEN LIGNIN DEPOLYMERIZATION PROCESS. THIS APPROACH WILL EXPAND ON THE USE OF HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS FOR THE OXIDATION OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ALCOHOLS TO PRODUCE CARBONYL OR CARBOXYL COMPOUNDS FOR THE FINE CHEMICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES. THIS WORK REPRESENTS A NEW APPLICATION FOR DYE-SENSITIZED PHOTOELECTROSYNTHETIC CELLS, AND THE RESEARCH FINDINGS FROM THE PROJECT WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, AND BY ORGANIZING AND HOSTING EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS FOR FUTURE PROFESSIONALS IN THE STEM FIELD. THE PIS WILL ALSO ACTIVELY RECRUIT AND SUPPORT UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS THROUGH THE OUTREACH PROGRAM. ORGANIC OXIDATION REACTIONS ARE IMPORTANT IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS OR LIGNOCELLULOSIC BIOMASS PROCESSING. CHEMOSELECTIVE OXIDATION OF THE ALIPHATIC AND/OR BENZYLIC ALCOHOL MOIETIES IN LIGNIN IS A GOOD TARGET FOR CONTROLLING THE DEGRADATION OF LIGNIN TO GENERATE DESIRED SMALL MOLECULAR PRODUCTS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ELUCIDATE A PHOTOELECTROSYNTHETIC CHEMOSELECTIVE OXIDATION OF ALCOHOL MOIETIES IN LIGNIN BY COMBINING THE USE OF AMINOXYL MEDIATORS WITH A DYE-SENSITIZED PHOTOANODE (DSP) AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. ESSENTIAL TO THIS APPROACH IS THE USE OF A DYE-SENSITIZED ELECTRODE INTERFACE TO ACTIVATE A NITROXYL MEDIATOR VIA LIGHT-INDUCED CHARGE SEPARATION. THIS PRESENTS BOTH A NEW APPROACH FOR DRIVING THE PHOTOCHEMICAL OXIDATION OF THE SECONDARY BENZYLIC ALCOHOL AND THE PRIMARY ALIPHATIC ALCOHOL FUNCTIONAL GROUPS FOUND IN LIGNIN, AS WELL AS A NEW PHOTOCATALYTIC APPLICATION FOR DYE-SENSITIZED PHOTOELECTROSYNTHETIC CELLS, WHICH HAVE TRADITIONALLY FOCUSED ON SOLAR WATER SPLITTING. THE APPROACH WILL INVOLVE (1) THE SYNTHESIS OF PHOTOACTIVE POLYMERIC CATALYSTS AND THE ELUCIDATION OF THEIR UNDERLYING PHOTOCHEMICAL ELECTRON TRANSFER PROPERTIES FOR ACTIVATING NITROXYL MEDIATORS, (2) THE FABRICATION AND EVALUATION OF MESOPOROUS SEMICONDUCTOR-BASED ELECTRODES SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE CHEMOSELECTIVE OXIDATION OF LIGNIN DIMER MODEL COMPOUNDS WITH A SERIES OF NITROXYL MEDIATORS, AND (3) THE ELUCIDATION OF MECHANISTIC PATHWAYS FOR THE LIGHT-DRIVEN OXIDATION OF 2O BENZYLIC AND 1O ALIPHATIC ALCOHOLS USING A DSP AND ADDRESS PRACTICAL CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY THE USE OF OLIGOMER MODEL COMPOUNDS AND TECHNICAL LIGNIN. ** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** POLLINATION IS VITAL FOR FOOD PRODUCTION, YET KEY POLLINATORS, INCLUDING BUMBLEBEES, ARE DECLINING AT ALARMING RATES. TO STOP THESE DECLINES, WE MUST FIND WAYS TO BOLSTER BUMBLEBEE HEALTH. ONE PROMISING APPROACH IS TO IMPROVE GUT MICROBIOME FUNCTIONALITY USING PROBIOTICS. THE BUMBLEBEE GUT MICROBIOME INCLUDES FIVE UBIQUITOUS CORE BACTERIAL SPECIES AND VARIABLE MIXTURES OF NONCORE SPECIES. COMPOSITION OF THESE BACTERIAL SPECIES, AND STRAINS WITHIN THEM, VARIES EXTENSIVELY AMONG BUMBLEBEES. YET HOW THIS VARIATION IMPACTS HOST FUNCTION--AND WHETHER IT CAN BE LEVERAGED TO SUPPORT BUMBLEBEE HEALTH--ARE UNKNOWN. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH AIMS TO DEVELOP NATIVE PROBIOTICS TO PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND POLLINATION SERVICES OF MANAGED BUMBLEBEES. THIS ADDRESSES THE AFRI PRIORITY AREA PLANT HEALTH AND PRODUCTION AND PLANT PRODUCTS, BY DEVELOPING A NEW APPROACH TO MAINTAIN POLLINATOR HEALTH IN THE FACE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE (PROGRAM AREA POLLINATOR HEALTH: RESEARCHAND APPLICATION; A1113). WE WILL DESIGN PROBIOTICS AND OPTIMIZE THEIR DELIVERY TO BEES, WHILE EVALUATING THE POTENTIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR CONSERVATION IF PROBIOTICS CAN BE TRANSMITTED AMONG COLONIES OR SPECIES IN THE ENVIRONMENT. TO DO SO, WE WILL USE TOOLS AND CONCEPTS FROM MICROBIAL ECOLOGY, BIODIVERSITY-ECOSYSTEM FUNCTION THEORY, AND METAGENOMICS. THIS RESEARCH WILL IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW MICROBES SHAPE THE HEALTH OF A CRITICAL GROUP OF POLLINATORS AND PAVE THE WAY FOR ECOLOGICALLY INFORMED DESIGN OF FUTURE PROBIOTICS, IN BOTH BEES AND OTHER HOST ORGANISMS. BY FORTIFYING THE HEALTH OF KEY POLLINATORS AND LIMITING THEIR POPULATION DECLINES, THE U.S. WILL BE BETTER ABLE TO PROTECT FOOD PRODUCTION IN THE FUTURE.

CONFERENCE: CBMS CONFERENCE: CLASSIFYING AMENABLE OPERATOR ALGEBRAS -THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS OF TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY WILL HOST AN NSF/CBMS (CONFERENCE BOARD OF THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES) REGIONAL CONFERENCE IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES TITLED CLASSIFYING AMENABLE OPERATOR ALGEBRAS, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ON ITS CAMPUS IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS, FROM JUNE 9, 2025 TO JUNE 13, 2025. THE PRINCIPAL LECTURER WILL BE CHRISTOPHER SCHAFHAUSER FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN. THE MEETING WILL SERVE TO TRAIN WORKING MATHEMATICIANS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS ALIKE IN RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND NEW TECHNIQUES THAT HAVE ALLOWED PROGRESS IN THE FIELD OF OPERATOR ALGEBRAS AND THEIR CLASSIFICATION. IN ADDITION TO PROFESSOR SCHAFHAUSER'S MAIN LECTURES THERE WILL BE FIVE COMPLEMENTARY FOLLOW-UP TALKS BY ADDITIONAL SPEAKERS. THE PROGRAM WILL ALSO INCLUDE OTHER ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION AND TO PROVIDE YOUNG RESEARCHERS IN THE FIELD OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS AND SHARE THEIR RESEARCH. IN MORE DETAIL, OPERATOR ALGEBRAS, INCLUDING C*-ALGEBRAS AND VON NEUMANN ALGEBRAS, ORIGINALLY AROSE FROM QUANTUM PHYSICS. ENDURING INTEREST IN THEM IS LARGELY DUE TO THE REALIZATION THAT THEY CAN BE CONSTRUCTED FROM, AND IN SOME CASES ENCODE, MANY OTHER STRUCTURES, SUCH AS SYMMETRIES, TIME-EVOLVING SYSTEMS, GRAPHS, AND NUMBER FIELDS. ALAIN CONNES' WORK ON THE STRUCTURE AND CLASSIFICATION OF AMENABLE VON NEUMANN ALGEBRAS IN THE 1970S REMAINS FUNDAMENTAL TO MODERN VON NEUMANN ALGEBRA THEORY. IN THE TOPOLOGICAL SETTING OF C*-ALGEBRAS, THE CLASSIFICATION PROGRAM FOR AMENABLE C*-ALGEBRAS WAS INITIATED IN THE 1990S, SEEKING ANALOGOUS RESULTS. THIS LARGE-SCALE WORLDWIDE ENDEAVOR RECENTLY CULMINATED IN THE PROOF OF THE MAIN CONJECTURE IN THE AREA, GIVING A COMPLETE CLASSIFICATION OF A BROAD CLASS OF SIMPLE AMENABLE C*-ALGEBRAS. THIS MAIN LECTURES WILL PROVIDE AN ACCESSIBLE INTRODUCTION TO THE CLASSIFICATION RESULT AND THE FOLLOW-UP TALKS WILL FOCUS ON APPLICATIONS. SUBSEQUENT MEETINGS WILL ROTATE AMONG THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY, AND BAYLOR UNIVERSITY. THE BRAZOS ANALYSIS SEMINAR WILL BRING TOGETHER ANALYSTS AT ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS WITHIN THE SOUTH-CENTRAL REGION OF THE UNITED STATES ON A REGULAR BASIS TO COMMUNICATE THEIR RESEARCH, WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS TO MEET, COLLABORATE AND DISSEMINATE THEIR WORK ON A REGULAR BASIS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR. THE FORMAT FOR THE SEMINAR PROVIDES AMPLE OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS, POSTDOCS, AND JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS TO PRESENT THEIR WORK, START NEW COLLABORATIONS, LEARN ABOUT THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN MODERN ANALYSIS, AND TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS. THE SCIENTIFIC TOPICS OF THIS CONFERENCE SERIES WILL FOCUS ON THE ANALYTIC THEORY OF OPERATOR ALGEBRAS AND OPERATOR SPACE THEORIES AND THEIR CONNECTIONS TO HARMONIC ANALYSIS, ERGODIC THEORY, DYNAMIC SYSTEMS, AND THE QUANTUM INFORMATION THEORY. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: IUSE: EDU: THE AI VOYAGE: INTEGRATING AI LITERACY INTO COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULA WITH ACCESSIBLE HANDS-ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY CRAFTING A SERIES OF ACCESSIBLE, HANDS-ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES FEATURING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN EXISTING COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) COURSES. IN TODAY'S WORLD, AI HAS EMERGED AS A TRANSFORMATIVE FORCE, RESHAPING INDUSTRIES AND DAILY LIFE. GIVEN ITS PROFOUND IMPACT, THE CULTIVATION OF AI LITERACY WILL BECOME AN INDISPENSABLE COMPONENT OF UNDERGRADUATE CS EDUCATION. THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO ADDRESS THIS EDUCATIONAL IMPERATIVE BY TAILORING AND ENGINEERING AI ACTIVITIES TO NOT ONLY AUGMENT AI LITERACY BUT ALSO TO EXPAND AI EXPOSURE AND ENGAGEMENT AMONG CS STUDENTS. BY FOCUSING ON EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ROOTED IN REAL-WORLD SCENARIOS, THE PROJECT WILL ENDEAVOR TO OVERCOME TANGIBLE AND PERCEIVED BARRIERS TO AI EDUCATION. THE PROJECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SIGNIFICANTLY ADVANCE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND ACCESSIBILITY WITHIN THE CS DISCIPLINE. THIS PROJECT TEAM PLANS TO DEMYSTIFY AI FOR UNDERGRADUATES BY PRESENTING ALGORITHMS AND MODELS IN A MORE ACCESSIBLE AND ENGAGING MANNER. THIS INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY SHOULD PROMOTE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING, STIMULATE INTEREST, AND ENHANCE RETENTION AMONG STUDENTS, PREPARING THEM FOR SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN THE FIELD OF AI.
