PROJECT PURPOSE: THE JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE CONNECTING MINORITY COMMUNITIES PROJECT HOPES TO CLOSE A DIGITAL DIVIDE AMONG THE COLLEGE'S STUDENTS BY UPGRADING THE SCHOOL'S WIRELESS INFRASTRUCTURE, PROVIDING ACCESS TO PERSONAL DEVICES AND HOTSPOTS, AND INCREASING THE VOLUME OF COURSES AND DEGREES AVAILABLE TO HYBRID AND FULL ONLINE STUDENTS FOR A MORE IMMERSIVE, ENGAGING LEARNING EXPERIENCE. ACTIVITIES: FIRST, JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE WILL UPGRADE THE BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE TO INCREASE CAPACITY AND REDUCE LAG ON THE NETWORK. THE SCHOOL WILL ALSO PURCHASE PERSONAL DEVICES AND WI-FI HOTSPOTS TO ENSURE LOW-INCOME STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO ACCESS CLASSWORK, SCHOOL SESSIONS, AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES REGARDLESS OF THEIR PROXIMITY TO THE SCHOOL. THIS WILL AFFORD UNLIMITED BROADBAND ACCESS TO STUDENTS WHILE, AT THE SAME TIME, IMPROVING SECURITY ON THE CAMPUS NETWORK. LASTLY, THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TEAM WILL PURCHASE AND INSTALL COMPUTER STATIONS AND COLLABORATION TECHNOLOGY INTO THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION BUILDING ON CAMPUS. IN ADDITION TO IN-KIND SUPPORT FROM THE COLLEGE A NETWORK SPECIALIST WILL BE HIRED TO SUPPORT GRANT ACTIVITIES. OUTCOMES: JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EXPECTS TO SEE AN INCREASE IN ENROLLMENT, DEGREE COMPLETION, AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES ACCESSED THROUGH THE WORKFORCE BUILDING FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE SCHOOL INTENDS TO INCREASE ENROLLMENT BY OFFERING MORE OF ITS CURRENT DEGREE PROGRAMS AS ONLINE-ONLY OR HYBRID LEARNING AND IMPROVE THE STUDENT ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE FOR ONLINE AND HYBRID STUDENTS BY IMPROVING THE METHOD OF DELIVERY BEYOND THE STANDARD LAPTOP FORUM. ADDITIONALLY, JCC WILL HAVE A MORE THOROUGHLY TRAINED AND PREPARED STAFF TO IMPLEMENT TECHNOLOGY AND SECURITY UPGRADES AND ASSIST THE COLLEGE WITH FUTURE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION EFFORTS.BENEFICIARIES: JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE'S PROJECT WILL IMPACT ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF ON CAMPUS. WITH UPGRADES TO THEIR BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF PERSONAL DEVICES AND HOTSPOTS, STUDENTS WILL HAVE MORE ACCESS TO CLASSWORK, SCHOOL SESSIONS AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES REGARDLESS OF THEIR PROXIMITY TO THE SCHOOL. THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TEAM WILL PURCHASE AND INSTALL COMPUTER STATIONS AND COLLABORATION TECHNOLOGY INTO THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION BUILDING ON CAMPUS WHICH WILL BE ACCESSIBLE TO BOTH STUDENTS AND THE RESIDENTS OF THE SURROUNDING HAWKINS, TX ANCHOR COMMUNITY. SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES (IF APPLICABLE): THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION WILL AID IN THE ON-CAMPUS WORKFORCE BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS AND THE STUDENT/COMMUNITY MEMBER ENGAGEMENT.

IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT: INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH INFUSION INTO STEM EDUCATION (I-RISE) UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM -IMPLEMENTATION PROJECTS PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS) TO DESIGN, IMPLEMENT, STUDY, AND ASSESS COMPREHENSIVE INSTITUTIONAL EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS AND THE QUALITY OF THEIR PREPARATION BY STRENGTHENING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT AT JARVIS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY (JCU) SEEKS TO TRAIN A DIVERSE GROUP OF STUDENTS BY MAKING INNOVATIVE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN EDUCATION, INTERDISCIPLINARY STEM RESEARCH, AND SOCIAL LEARNING STRATEGIES. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS PURSUING STEM DEGREES TO BE COMPETITIVE FOR GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS. THE PROJECT WILL IMPACT THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, AND GRADUATION RATE OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN STEM DEGREES AND MAKE SUSTAINABLE CHANGE TO STEM PROGRAMS AT THE INSTITUTION. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO ADDRESS SEVERAL CAUSAL FACTORS OF STEM STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GAPS THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION AND EXTENSION OF EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING IN THE STEM AREAS. THE INFUSION OF COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES (CURES) INTO LOWER-LEVEL STEM COURSES WILL EXPOSE STUDENTS EARLY TO HANDS-ON RESEARCH APPROACHES WITH THE POTENTIAL TO ADVANCE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR CHOSEN FIELD AND PROMOTE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. THE PROJECT WILL GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE EFFECTS OF INTERVENTIONS ON SOCIAL LEARNING STRATEGIES, INCLUDING GROWTH MINDSET, SENSE OF BELONGING, AND SELF-EFFICACY. IN ADDITION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ENGINEERING PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE A STRONG GENERAL FOUNDATION IN THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING AND EQUIP STUDENTS TO EXCEL IN HIGHER-LEVEL COURSES AND ENGINEERING SPECIALIZATIONS. MOREOVER, STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN FACULTY MENTORED RESEARCH DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND SUMMER WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF FACULTY RESEARCH AND INCREASE JCU STEM STUDENTS? ABILITY TO COMPETE SUCCESSFULLY FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS. FINALLY, THIS OPPORTUNITY WILL PROMOTE NEW AND EXPANDED COLLABORATIONS FOR DEGREE AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES WITH OTHER INSTITUTIONS THROUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER (IREC). THE PROJECT, WHICH MAY SERVE AS A MODEL FOR BROAD STEM INTERVENTION, WILL BE ASSESSED TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF FACULTY MENTORING, INTERNSHIPS, RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, AND SOCIAL LEARNING STRATEGIES ON THE OUTCOMES OF RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES OF STEM MAJORS. ML PUSHES INVESTIGATORS FROM DIFFERENT FIELDS TO CONDUCT INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND OBTAIN NEW DISCOVERY. THERE ARE MUTUALLY GROWING INTERESTS AMONG TEAM OF RESEARCHERS AT TWO INSTITUTIONS IN CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE APPLICATIONS OF ML AND INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) FOR CANCER DETECTIONS, PREDICTIONS, AND TREATMENTS AT JARVIS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY (JCU) (FORMERLY JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE (JCC)) AND CLAYTON STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU). TO REALIZE THE INTERESTS OF THE INVESTIGATORS FROM BOTH UNIVERSITIES, A COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT IS ESTABLISHED. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO CATALYZE COLLABORATIONS AND EXPLORE NEW RESEARCH DIRECTIONS IN THE APPLICATIONS OF ML AND IOT FOR CANCER DETECTIONS, PREDICTIONS, AND TREATMENTS. TO SUPPORT THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE GOAL AND BENEFIT THE TEAM, THE PROJECT AIMS TO 1) DEVELOP NOVEL ML BASED ALGORITHMS TO BUILD SOFTWARE TO DETECT, IDENTIFY, AND PREDICT CANCER CELL GROWTHS AND TREATMENTS,? 2) INFUSE NOVEL ML ALGORITHMS WITH THE INEXPENSIVE IOT HARDWARE TO ENABLE DATA COLLECTION FOR THE CANCER RESEARCH, 3) DEVELOP SMART CAMERA BASED APPS FOR VISUAL SKIN CANCER DATA COLLECTIONS AND ANALYSIS, AND 4) OFFER UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE COURSE PROJECTS OR THESES FOR THE TWO COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH AND TRAINING IN APPLIED ML AND IOT FOR MEDICAL IMAGING AND CANCER TREATMENTS.
