MBNMS OFFICES WILL BE COLLOCATED IN THE BUILDING. THE PARTNERSHIP WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS FROM INCREASED VISIBILITY AND INTERACTION BETWEEN CSUMB MARINE SCIENCE FACULTY AND STUDENTS. THIS PROJECT PREPARES STUDENTS AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MONTEREY BAY FOR LONG-TERM CAREERS IN AGRICULTURE THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING, CAREER PREPARATION, AND DIRECT ENGAGEMENT WITH FARMERS AND RESEARCHERS. STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN INTERNSHIPS, FIELD-BASED LEARNING, AND APPLIED TECHNICAL TRAINING THAT CONNECT CLASSROOM KNOWLEDGE TO REAL-WORLD AGRICULTURAL CHALLENGES. GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN GENOME SCIENCE - ABSTRACT THE OBJECTIVE OF “GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN GENOME SCIENCE” IS TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE, 2-YEAR MENTORED RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MONTEREY BAY (CSUMB) AND IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ (UCSC) TO TRAIN STUDENTS WHO ARE FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED AND LOW-INCOME POPULATIONS FOR CAREERS IN GENOMICS. THE TRAINING WILL BE FOCUSED ON ENGAGING STUDENTS IN A BROAD RANGE OF TOPICS AND RESEARCH ENVIRONMENTS (BOTH WET AND DRY LABS AT UCSC). A GREAT STUDENT COHORT WILL BE RECRUITED FROM STEM MAJORS INCLUDING BIOLOGY, MATH & STATISTICS, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE AT CSUMB WITH THE AIM TO IDENTIFY THEM EARLY IN THEIR ACADEMIC CAREERS AND BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION IN GENOMICS AND WELL POSITION THEM TO BEGIN RESEARCH TRAINING. THE GREAT COHORT WILL INCLUDE STUDENTS FROM RISING JUNIORS IN THE SUMMER AND FALL PRIOR TO THE SUMMER OF RESEARCH. ONCE A COHORT IS IDENTIFIED, THE PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES WILL BE INITIATED IN THE FALL SEMESTER OF THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, FOLLOWED BY ASSIGNING STUDENTS TO CSUMB AND UCSC MENTORS. THE STUDENT WILL THEN BE ASSIGNED TO COURSES AND WORKSHOPS AT CSUMB IN THE SPRING OF JUNIOR YEAR. THE TRAINING OF THE STUDENTS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES CENTER AT CSUMB. IN THE SUMMER, STUDENTS (NOW RISING SENIORS) WILL BE PLACED IN LABS TO WORK WITH THEIR UCSC MENTORS. WHEN POSSIBLE AT UCSC, THE GREAT STUDENTS WILL BE PLACED IN LABS THAT ARE ALSO HOSTING UCSC UNDERGRADS. THIS WILL ENCOURAGE PEER-TO-PEER MENTORING AND WILL HELP BUILD AFFINITY BETWEEN CSUMB AND UCSC STUDENTS AND CULTIVATE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. IN THE FALL OF SENIOR YEAR, STUDENTS WILL RETURN TO CSUMB FOR TWO SEMESTERS OF CONTINUED ENGAGEMENT WITH COURSEWORK AND CONTINUATION OF RESEARCH ALIGNED WITH THEIR SUMMER LAB RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. WHERE POSSIBLE, SUMMER RESEARCH PROJECTS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND THE MENTORS WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN TANDEM WITH CSUMB FACULTY. ALL GREAT SCHOLARS WILL ALSO PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, GENOMICS-SPECIFIC EDUCATION, AND GRADUATE SCHOOL PREPARATION WORKSHOPS AND COURSES. SKILLS-BASED WORKSHOPS WILL INCLUDE INSTRUCTION IN BASIC PROGRAMMING, DATA STRUCTURES AND ALGORITHMS, ELEMENTARY STATISTICS, AND THE USE OF UCSC- BASED TOOLS LIKE THE GENOME BROWSER AND THE XENA BROWSER, WHILE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND GENOMIC EDUCATION COURSE WILL COVER INSTRUCTION ON SCIENCE WRITING AND COMMUNICATION, CAREER PATHWAY UNDERSTANDING, RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH CONDUCT AND ETHICS, LEGAL AND SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS ISSUES IN GENOMICS, AREAS OF SPECIFIC RESEARCH INQUIRY IN GENOMICS, AND OTHER TOPICS TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCHOLARS’ IDENTITIES AS SCIENTISTS, THEIR SCIENTIFIC VALUES, AND THEIR SELF-EFFICACY. COORDINATION OF LAB PLACEMENT AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES AT UCSC WILL BE MANAGED BY THE GENOMICS INSTITUTE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY PROGRAMS (GIOD). FIRST WE PROPOSE TO INTEGRATE FIRE-CRITICAL MODEL-DERIVED DATA FROM NASA S TERRESTRIAL OBSERVATION AND PREDICTION SYSTEM (TOPS) AND SCALABLE WIND MODEL DATA (NOGAPS) INTO THE W-CDE. SECOND WE WILLMATURE AND INTEGRATE NEW AIRBORNE SENSOR FIRE DETECTION ALGORITHM CAPABILITIES WITH THE NASAAMS-WILDFIRE SENSOR. THESE DATA WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE W-CDE TO IMPROVE THE RELIABILITY AND USEFULNESS OF THE MODEL-DERIVED HOT SPOT DETECTION DATA. THIRD WE WILL DEVELOP NEW AIRBORNE POST-FIRE BURN SEVERITY INDICES DATA TO FEED DIRECTLY INTO THE W-CDE. THESE THREE PROPOSED TASKS WILL PROVIDE SCALABLE DATA VISUALIZATION ENHANCEMENTS TO THE W-CDE AND ALLOW AUNIFYING DISASTER MANAGEMENT CAPABILITY FOR ALL PHASES OF FIRE ACTIVITY.

THIS PROJECT INCLUDES AN APPLIED RESEARCH PROGRAM THAT WILL SUPPORT CONTINUED ADVANCES IN THE ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, AND USABILITY OF DATA FROM THE OPENET MODELING FRAMEWORK AND OPEN DATA SERVICES FOR WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS RANGING IN SCALES FROM MAJOR WATERSHEDS TO INDIVIDUAL FARMS. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AND REFINE TECHNIQUES AND METHODS FOR ASSESSING AND REPORTING ACCURACY OF SATELLITE-DERIVED ET DATA PRODUCTS, IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY ERROR CONTRIBUTIONS FROM METEOROLOGICAL INPUTS IN THE OPENET SOFTWARE SYSTEM, INCORPORATE WATER USE AND IRRIGATION TYPE DATA INTO OPENET, IMPROVE THE OPENET APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE (API) AND DATA SERVICES, RUN OPENET MODELS TO PROVIDE ONGOING DATA UPDATES AND DATA CONTINUITY, CONTRIBUTE TO OPERATIONAL PLANNING, AND PRODUCE DOCUMENTATION FOR OPENET TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS, BEST PRACTICES, TRAINING, AND GOVERNANCE. ** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** WITH MORE FREQUENT AND SEVERE DROUGHTS AND A GROWING DEMAND FOR FOOD PRODUCTION, WATER SUPPLIES FOR AGRICULTURE ARE UNDER STRAIN IN THE SOUTHWEST (SW) AND SOUTHERN PLAINS (SP). AS A RESULT, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS FACE A FUTURE OF BEING ASKED TO DO MORE WITH LESS WATER. THE OPENET SYSTEM, A SATELLITE-BASED EVAPOTRANSPIRATION (ET) DATA AND OPEN DATA SERVICE, PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACCELERATE THE USE OF DATA-DRIVEN MANAGEMENT. THE GOAL OF OUR PROPOSAL IS TO QUANTIFY FIELD TO BASIN-SCALE WATER NEEDS AND EVALUATE THE CONSERVED CONSUMPTIVE WATER USE FROM PREVIOUS WATER CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS. TO UNDERSTAND REALISTIC WATER SAVINGS FROM CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS ACROSS THE SW AND SP REGIONS, THIS PROJECT WILL ANSWER TIMELY AND RELEVANT QUESTIONS SUCH AS: HOW MUCH WATER IS NEEDED TO SUPPORT IRRIGATION WITHIN A GIVEN BASIN? WHAT CHANGES IN CONSUMPTIVE USE OF WATER HAVE RESULTED FROM PAST AND ONGOING INTERVENTIONS AND INVESTMENTS IN WATER CONSERVATION AND IRRIGATION EFFICIENCY?

CAREER: GENOMIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL DIVERGENCE DURING SPECIATION IN A HYPER-DIVERSE MARINE FISH CLADE -THIS AWARD IS FUNDED IN PART UNDER THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT OF 2021 (PUBLIC LAW 117-2). UNDERSTANDING THE EVOLUTIONARY MECHANISMS THAT GENERATE BIODIVERSITY IS CRUCIAL FOR CONSERVING AND MANAGING SPECIES OVER THE LONG TERM. MUCH OF THE PLANET?S BIODIVERSITY HAS BEEN GENERATED THROUGH ADAPTIVE RADIATION, A PROCESS IN WHICH A GROUP OF ORGANISMS DIVERSIFIES INTO MANY NEW SPECIES WITH DIFFERENT ECOLOGICAL ROLES. HOWEVER, WE LACK A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE GENOMIC CHANGES UNDERLYING THESE EVENTS, PARTICULARLY IN MARINE ECOSYSTEMS WHERE THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS BARRIERS TO MIGRATION. ROCKFISHES IN THE GENUS SEBASTES ARE A HIGHLY DIVERSE (>110 SPECIES) GROUP OF FISHES THAT LIVE ACROSS A RANGE OF DEPTHS AND HABITATS, MAKING THEM AN EXCELLENT MODEL FOR STUDYING THE DYNAMICS OF DIVERSIFICATION. THIS CAREER PROJECT WILL ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW SPECIES DIVERSIFY BY EXAMINING THE GENOMIC PROCESSES UNDERLYING SPECIATION IN ROCKFISHES, AS WELL AS THE ACCOMPANYING SHIFTS IN HABITAT, BODY SHAPE, SIZE AND COLOR AMONG SISTER SPECIES. THIS RESEARCH PROGRAM IS INTEGRATED WITH EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND TEACHER TRAINING, WITH THE GOAL OF CONTRIBUTING TO A STRONG AND DIVERSE WORKFORCE IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. THIS STUDY WILL COMBINE GENOMIC DATA WITH INFORMATION ON PHENOTYPIC DIVERSITY, ECOLOGY AND BIOGEOGRAPHY TO DEVELOP A HOLISTIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE DYNAMICS OF DIVERSIFICATION IN THIS EXTRAORDINARILY SPECIES-RICH GENUS. THE FIRST AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO CONSTRUCT AN UPDATED, TIME-CALIBRATED PHYLOGENETIC FRAMEWORK FOR ROCKFISHES USING PHYLOGENOMIC METHODS. IN THE SECOND AIM, WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING WILL BE USED TO INFER LIKELY DIVERGENCE SCENARIOS AMONG SYMPATRIC SPECIES PAIRS, CHARACTERIZE PATTERNS OF GENOMIC DIFFERENTIATION, AND RECONSTRUCT DEMOGRAPHIC HISTORIES OF LINEAGES IN THE CONTEXT OF SPECIATION EVENTS AND OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA. THE THIRD AIM WILL EXAMINE THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN GENOMIC AND ECOMORPHOLOGICAL DIVERGENCE BY ASSESSING OVERLAP BETWEEN SISTER SPECIES ACROSS A SUITE OF HABITAT FACTORS AND QUANTITATIVE PHENOTYPIC CHARACTERS. THESE RESEARCH AIMS WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES VIA THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SCAFFOLDED SET OF CLASSROOM-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, AND THE CREATION OF A LEARNING AND MENTORING COMMUNITY FOCUSED AROUND BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF K12 STEM TEACHERS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES BY ENGAGING AND TRAINING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS IN THE PRINCIPLES OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY AND RESEARCH. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

AT CSUMB, UNDERGRADUATES MAJORING IN A NEW FANH-RELATED SCIENCES DEGREE WILL PARTICIPATE IN A TWO-YEAR SCHOLARS PROGRAM AIMED AT BOLSTERING SELF-CONFIDENCE, SELF-EFFICACY, AND EXPOSURE TO AUTHENTIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT FACULTY IN DEVELOPING FANH-RELATED COURSE-BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AT CSUMB. THE PROJECT WILL FORGE STRONG TIES BETWEEN CSUMB UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND UCSC GRADUATE PROGRAMS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON FANH-RELATED SCIENCES, FACILITATING CURRICULAR ARTICULATION BETWEEN THE TWO INSTITUTIONS. CROSS-INSTITUTIONAL FACULTY LEARNING TO IMPROVE CRITICAL TRANSITIONS IN STEM EDUCATION -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS BY HELPING COLLEGE STEM INSTRUCTORS EXAMINE THE ROLE OF TEXT IN LEARNING, SELECT USEFUL TEXTS, AND ASSIGN MEANINGFUL TASKS. THIS PILOT WILL RESULT IN A SHARED LEARNING MODEL BETWEEN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND A REGIONAL PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. THE ACCESSIBILITY OF UNPRECEDENTED AMOUNTS OF DATA NECESSITATES MAKING SENSE OF THAT DATA TO TURN IT INTO INFORMATION WITHIN AND ACROSS SOURCES. THE CURRENT AND FUTURE STEM WORKFORCE WILL BENEFIT FROM STUDENTS WHO USE STRATEGIES TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND MAKE SENSE OF TEXTS IN A VARIETY OF CONTEXTS AND CONTENT AREAS. STRATEGIES FROM READING APPRENTICESHIP WILL FOCUS ATTENTION ON FOUR DIMENSIONS OF LEARNING--SOCIAL, PERSONAL, COGNITIVE, AND KNOWLEDGE BUILDING--TO FOSTER PERSISTENCE AND IMPROVE SCIENTIFIC LITERACY. THE PROJECT WILL EXPLORE LEARNING STRATEGIES FACULTY CAN EASILY IMPLEMENT TO SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESS. THROUGH BUILDING COMMUNITY AROUND SHARED LEARNING GOALS, THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT FACULTY AND STUDENT LEARNING. A DUAL CAMPUS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING MODEL BASED ON THE READING APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) FACULTY AT TWO- AND FOUR-YEAR HSI INSTITUTIONS WILL ACCELERATE IMPROVEMENTS IN THE QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION. IN ANY CONTENT AREA, THERE ARE DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC TASKS AND TEXTS THAT REQUIRE SPECIALIZED WAYS OF READING, THINKING, AND CONVEYING INFORMATION TO OTHERS. THIS PILOT AND PLANNING PROPOSAL WILL EQUIP FACULTY TO TRANSFORM STUDENT RETENTION AND PROGRESSION NOT ONLY WITHIN THE COURSE, SERIES, AND CURRICULAR PATHWAYS WITHIN A DEPARTMENT, BUT ALSO ACROSS INSTITUTIONS. WHEN APPLIED ACROSS REGIONAL HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSIS), THE READING APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE INDIVIDUAL FACULTY TEACHING COMPETENCIES, STRENGTHEN INTER- AND INTRA-DEPARTMENT ALIGNMENT, AND RESULT IN SHARED EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING PRACTICES FOR METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES. SUPPORTING EQUITABLE COLLABORATIONS THROUGH PAIR PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCES IN UNDERGRADUATE DATA SCIENCE COURSES -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY IMPLEMENTING AND STUDYING EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING PRACTICES THAT PROMOTE EQUITABLE COLLABORATION IN UNDERGRADUATE DATA SCIENCE COURSES AT CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN LUIS OBISPO AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MONTEREY BAY. THERE IS RAPIDLY GROWING DEMAND FOR DATA SCIENTISTS BOTH NATIONALLY AND GLOBALLY. AT THE SAME TIME, MANY EDUCATIONAL APPROACHES THAT HAVE BEEN STUDIED IN COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS, AND OTHER AREAS HAVE NOT BEEN EXPLORED IN THE INTERDISCIPLINARY SETTING OF DATA SCIENCE. CREATING CLASSROOMS WHERE EVERY STUDENT HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN EFFECTIVELY IS INTEGRAL TO GROWING AND SUSTAINING A DIVERSE DATA SCIENCE WORKFORCE. STUDENTS' SENSE OF BELONGING IN THEIR CLASSROOMS IS DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR LIKELIHOOD OF PERSISTING IN STEM, BE IT IN THEIR CHOSEN DISCIPLINES OR MORE BROADLY. GROUP WORK IS ONE METHOD OF SUPPORTING ENGAGEMENT AND SENSE OF BELONGING IN UNDERGRADUATE CLASSROOMS. THIS PROJECT PLANS TO INVESTIGATE STUDENTS' EXPERIENCES WHEN COLLABORATING ON PAIR PROGRAMMING TASKS IN THE DATA SCIENCE CLASSROOM, WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON STUDENTS FROM POPULATIONS THAT HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN UNDERREPRESENTED IN DATA SCIENCE AND BROADER STEM. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT PAIR PROGRAMMING IN COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES CAN EITHER SERVE AS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS OR CAN MAGNIFY IMBALANCES IN POWER OR PERCEIVED AUTHORITY. THE PROJECT WILL ITERATIVELY DESIGN AND TEST TOOLS THAT WILL SUPPORT POSITIVE PAIR PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCES AND IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING. THE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS PROVIDE A RICH OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY AND REFINE PAIR PROGRAMMING PRACTICES IN DISTINCT CONTEXTS, AS CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, SAN LUIS OBISPO IS A PREDOMINANTLY WHITE INSTITUTION AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MONTEREY BAY IS A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND HOW SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCES, SPECIFICALLY PAIR PROGRAMMING, CAN BE DESIGNED TO CREATE ENGAGING, INCLUSIVE, AND EFFECTIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS. THERE IS MINIMAL RESEARCH ON SPECIFIC WAYS THAT INSTRUCTORS MIGHT FOSTER EQUITABLE STUDENT COLLABORATIONS IN THE DATA SCIENCE CLASSROOM, AND THIS PROJECT'S KNOWLEDGE GENERATION EFFORTS WILL ADDRESS THIS CRITICAL GAP. THE PROJECT WILL USE DISCOURSE ANALYSIS TO INVESTIGATE THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH STUDENTS ARE POSITIONED WITH POWER AND AUTHORITY WHEN COLLABORATING WITH THEIR PEERS ON PAIR PROGRAMMING TASKS IN DATA SCIENCE. A CROSS-CASE ANALYSIS WILL BE USED TO EXPLORE PROJECT-DEVELOPED PEDAGOGIES IN A VARIETY OF CLASSES WITHIN TWO DEMOGRAPHICALLY DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS. THROUGH THESE INVESTIGATIONS, THE PROJECT WILL IDENTIFY POSITIVE, ASSET-CENTERED NARRATIVES ABOUT STUDENTS AND CREATE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MATERIALS TO TRAIN EDUCATORS TO ENACT EQUITABLE, EFFECTIVE PAIR PROGRAMMING APPROACHES FOR DATA SCIENCE EDUCATION. EACH OF THESE PROJECT GOALS SHOULD INCREASE AND STRENGTHEN THE FUTURE DATA SCIENCE WORKFORCE. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. TRADITIONAL METHODS, INCLUDING MANUAL WEEDING AND ROBOTIC WEEDERS BASED ON SHAPE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CROPS AND WEEDS, ARE INCREASINGLY UNECONOMICAL DUE TO LABOR SHORTAGES AND HIGH COSTS. THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A NOVEL APPROACH: LEVERAGING HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING (HSI) IN COMBINATION WITH MACHINE LEARNING TO REVOLUTIONIZE WEED CONTROL IN AGRICULTURAL SETTINGS. THIS TECHNIQUE USES SPECIALIZED CAMERAS TO MEASURE LIGHT REFLECTION AMONGPLANT SPECIES AS A WAY TO DIFFERENTIATE WEEDS FROM CROPS.HSI OFFERS A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE OVER CONVENTIONAL METHODS OF WEED MANAGEMENT. IT IS EFFECTIVE EVEN IN COMPLEX SCENARIOS LIKE PARTIAL VISIBILITY OF WEEDSOR SIZE VARIATIONS, AND IS ADAPTABLE TO DIFFERENT PLANTING METHODS. MEETING THE INCREASING DEMAND FOR AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES FOR FOOD, FEED, FUEL AND OTHER USES, WITHOUT PUTTING GREATER PRESSURE ON THE WORLD'S NATURAL RESOURCES, WILL REQUIRE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS GENERATED BY THE NEXT GENERATION OF DIVERSE AND WELL-TRAINED SCIENTISTS IN FOOD, AGRICULTURAL, NATURAL RESOURCES AND HUMAN (FANH) SCIENCES. DESPITE THIS GROWING DEMAND FOR A SKILLED WORKFORCE, UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION REMAIN MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION, AS WELL AS FOR THE AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD INDUSTRY. THESE CHALLENGES ARE EXACERBATED FOR LOW-INCOME, FIRST-GENERATION, AND TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY (URM) STUDENTS WHO GENERALLY LACK STRONG NETWORKS AND CONNECTIONS TO FACULTY AND MENTORS THAT WOULD INCREASE THEIR SUCCESS, PARTICULARLY IN STEM COURSES AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. HERE, WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A PROGRAM TO ENHANCE CURRENT PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MONTEREY BAY (CSUMB) AND HARTNELL COLLEGE (HC), TWO HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS LOCATED IN MONTEREY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, AN AREA POPULARLY REFERRED AS THE SALAD BOWL OF THE WORLD, AND EQUALLY KNOWN FOR HAVING ONE OF THE WIDEST INCOME DISPARITIES BETWEEN HISPANIC AND WHITE POPULATIONS. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO ADVANCE EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND ENTHUSIASM FOR FANH FIELDS, PROMOTING THE TRANSFER PROCESS FROM HC TO CSUMB, AND TO IMPROVE SOCIAL MOBILITY BY PREPARING REGIONAL STUDENTS FOR CAREERS IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO IMPROVE STUDENT-LEARNING THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM, AIMED AT ENHANCING PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC GROWTH OF PARTICIPATING STUDENTS, AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS POTENTIAL ACTIVE PARTICIPANT OF THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH COMMUNITY WORKING TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED BY THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY. THESE COURSE-BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES WILL ALSO ENHANCE EARLY PARTICIPATION AND EXPOSURETO INTERDISCIPLINARY LABORATORY AND FIELD-BASED RESEARCH OFFERING AUTHENTIC EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO IMPROVE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND MODERN MICROBIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH APPROACHES, INCLUDING MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS OF SOILBORNE PATHOGENS, AS WELL AS UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEX ISSUES SURROUNDING PLANT DISEASE MANAGEMENT. COLLECTIVELY, THESE EFFORTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO EMPOWER URM STUDENTS AT HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS TO BECOME THE NEXT GENERATION OF AGRICULTURAL PROFESSIONALS THAT WILL FILL THE LARGE AND GROWING NUMBER OF AGRICULTURAL JOBS IN OUR REGION AND STATE. THE ACCURATE PREDICTION OF ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY REQUIRES PRECISE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ARRANGEMENT OF IONS AT INTERFACES AND THE PROPERTIES THAT DRIVE THESE ARRANGEMENTS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO INVESTIGATE HOW MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS AND IONIC CHARGE INFLUENCE THE PREFERENCES OF IONS FOR THE INTERFACE AND DETERMINE THE PROPERTIES THAT DICTATE ION PAIR FORMATION. THROUGH COLLABORATIVE EXPERIENCES AND COMPLEMENTARY COMPUTATIONAL AND SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES, UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHERS AT BOTH PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS WILL GAIN INVALUABLE PRACTICAL SKILLS THAT ARE TRANSFERABLE TO FUTURE CAREERS IN SCIENCE. NON-UNIFORM DISTRIBUTIONS OF IONS AT INTERFACES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SUPPRESS OR ENHANCE HETEROGENEOUS REACTIONS BEYOND THE LEVELS INDICATED BY THE IONIC CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THE BULK OF AEROSOLS. IN ADDITION TO RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AT CSUMB, THEY WILL PLACE STUDENTS AT FIVE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS: NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL, ELKHORN SLOUGH NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE, HOPKINS MARINE STATION OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY, MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM RESEARCH INSTITUTE, AND MOSS LANDING MARINE LABORATORY. THE PROGRAM LEVERAGES THE SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL ASSETS OF THE MONTEREY BAY REGION TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY AND NUMBER OF STUDENTS PREPARED FOR CAREERS IN OCEAN SCIENCE. THE PROGRAM WILL: 1) RECRUIT PARTICIPANTS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS AND THOSE FROM RESEARCH LIMITED INSTITUTIONS; 2) PREPARE STUDENTS IN ADVANCE OF THE 10-WEEK REU FOR THE RIGORS OF UNDERTAKING ORIGINAL RESEARCH; 3) ENGAGE STUDENTS IN INNOVATIVE RESEARCH IN OCEANOGRAPHY, MARINE BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY, OCEAN ENGINEERING, AND MARINE GEOLOGY; 4) PROVIDE RIGOROUS RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS DURING AND AFTER THE REU TO MAINTAIN INTEREST AND INVOLVEMENT IN THE OCEAN SCIENCES; AND 5) PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HIGH CALIBER FACULTY MENTORING ACROSS ALL PHASES OF THE REU. INTERNS WILL HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF OPTIONS FOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. OCEANOGRAPHY TOPICS INCLUDE, TRACE METAL ANALYSIS, BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY, INTERNAL WAVE DYNAMICS, OCEAN ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION, OCEAN MODELING, NEARSHORE PROCESSES, AND COASTAL CIRCULATION. MARINE BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY TOPICS INCLUDE MARINE LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY, MARINE MICROBIOLOGY, FISH ECOLOGY, MARINE PHYSIOLOGY, POPULATION GENETICS, INVASION ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION BIOLOGY, THERMAL STRESS PHYSIOLOGY, AND BIOMECHANICS. MARINE GEOLOGY TOPICS INCLUDE COASTAL EROSION, SEDIMENT TRANSPORT, SEAFLOOR MAPPING, BIOGEOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS, SEDIMENTOLOGY OF UPWELLING, BIOGENIC SEDIMENTS, AND GEOMORPHOLOGY OF COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS. NONAUTONOMOUS CONTROL OF SUBSTRATE MORPHOGENESIS BY MIGRATING CELLS - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT COLLECTIVE CELL MIGRATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PRECISE ASSEMBLY OF MANY TISSUES AND ORGANS DURING DEVELOPMENT, AND INVOLVES THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN MULTIPLE CELL TYPES. IN ALL MODES OF COLLECTIVE MIGRATION, INTERACTIONS WITH A SUBSTRATE MODULATE PARAMETERS SUCH AS CELL POLARITY, DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENT, AND EVEN GROWTH AND MORPHOGENESIS, WITH THE EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX (ECM) SERVING AS A SCAFFOLD FOR VARIOUS SIGNALING CUES FOR MIGRATORY COHORTS. HOWEVER, THE EXTENT TO WHICH MIGRATING CELLS EXERT A RECIPROCAL INFLUENCE ON THEIR SUBSTRATE REMAINS LARGELY UNKNOWN. DROSOPHILA CAUDAL VISCERAL MESODERM (CVM) CELLS UNDERGO SYNCHRONOUS BILATERAL COLLECTIVE MIGRATION ALONG A TRUNK VISCERAL MESODERM (TVM) SUBSTRATE, WHICH EXPRESSES FIBROBLAST GROWTH FACTOR (FGF) LIGANDS THAT SERVE AS CHEMOATTRACTIVE, SURVIVAL, AND GROWTH CUES IN ORDER TO DRIVE PROPER CVM MIGRATION AND QUALITY CONTROL TO PATTERN THE LARVAL MIDGUT MUSCULATURE. HOWEVER, CVM CELLS ALSO DISPLAY AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF INFLUENCE ON TVM DEVELOPMENT, WITH MISMIGRATING CVM CELLS ALTERING THE DIRECTIONAL GROWTH HABIT OF TVM CELLS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISTIC BASIS FOR THIS INTERACTION BETWEEN THE CVM AND TVM. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT CVM CELLS NONAUTONOMOUSLY MODULATE DIRECTIONAL GROWTH IN THE TVM THROUGH POSITIVE REGULATION OF THE BONE MORPHOGENETIC PROTEIN (BMP) SIGNALING PATHWAY. WE WILL EMPLOY A HYBRID APPROACH OF ESTABLISHED IMMUNOSTAINING AND LIVE IMAGING TECHNIQUES TO ASSAY THE RESPECTIVE POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE BMP AND FGF SIGNALING PATHWAYS THROUGH TISSUE-SPECIFIC RESCUE AND LOSS-OF-FUNCTION EXPERIMENTS. THE RATIONALE BEHIND THIS APPROACH IS THAT UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISM UNDERLYING INTERDEPENDENT TISSUE INTERACTIONS WILL ALLOW US TO UNCOVER NOVEL WAYS IN WHICH PRECURSOR CELLS INTERACT WITH THEIR EXTRACELLULAR ENVIRONMENT DURING COLLECTIVE MIGRATION. THE OBJECTIVE WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED VIA TWO SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) INVESTIGATE THE ROLE OF BMP SIGNALING IN CVM-DEPENDENT MORPHOGENESIS OF THE TVM, AND 2) OPTIMIZE IN VIVO LIVE IMAGING TO ELUCIDATE THE NATURE OF CVM-TVM INTERACTIONS OVER THE COURSE OF MIGRATION. OUR WORKING HYPOTHESIS IS THAT TISSUE-SPECIFIC REGULATION OF THE BMP SIGNALING REPRESSOR BRINKER (BRK) BY THE CVM IS REQUIRED TO MODULATE TVM GROWTH PRIOR TO MYOBLAST FUSION. AS THE MAJORITY OF RESEARCH HAS FOCUSED ON IDENTIFYING AND CHARACTERIZING THE SIGNALING CUES THAT TISSUE SUBSTRATES USE TO MODULATE THE BEHAVIOR OF MIGRATING CELLS, THIS WORK IS INNOVATIVE IN THAT IT INVESTIGATES A DRAMATIC, PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN EXAMPLE OF HOW MIGRATING CELLS CAN IN TURN INFLUENCE THEIR SUBSTRATE BEYOND MODIFYING THE EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX (ECM). THIS WORK IS SIGNIFICANT IN THAT IT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A LONG-TERM RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR STUDYING HOW MULTIPLE, COMPLEX INTERACTIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT TISSUES ALLOW FOR PROPER PATTERNING OF AN ORGAN, WHICH IS OF INTEREST TO CELL, DEVELOPMENTAL, AND CANCER BIOLOGISTS, AS EVIDENCE FOR NONAUTONOMOUS EFFECTS ON TISSUE SUBSTRATES HAS IMPLICATIONS FOR INCREASING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR TUMOR METASTASES.

MICROBIAL GROWTH EFFICIENCY IS A CRITICAL ECOLOGICAL PARAMETER THAT DESCRIBES THE ENERGY REQUIRED BY MICROBES FOR BIOMASS PRODUCTION AND DEFINES THE PROPORTION OF CARBON LOST FROM MARINE MICROBIAL FOOD WEBS THROUGH RESPIRATION?CONVERSION OF ORGANIC CARBON INTO CARBON DIOXIDE. DESPITE ITS SIGNIFICANCE, THERE IS A LIMITED UNDERSTANDING OF THE DRIVERS OF MICROBIAL EFFICIENCY. ASSESSING MICROBIAL EFFICIENCY VARIATION ACROSS DIFFERENT MARINE MICROBES IS HINDERED BY THE DIFFICULTY OF DIRECTLY MEASURING THE ENERGY USED FOR BIOMASS PRODUCTION. THIS PROJECT USES NEW METHODS TO ESTIMATE MICROBIAL ENERGY CONVERSION WITHIN CELLS AND COMPARE IT TO MEASUREMENTS OF OTHER METABOLIC PROCESSES SUCH AS RESPIRATION AND PRIMARY PRODUCTION. ADDITIONALLY, THE RESEARCHERS MEASURE ENVIRONMENTAL NUTRIENT CONCENTRATION, OXYGEN CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE, PH, AND MICROBIAL COMMUNITY STRUCTURE FROM DIVERSE OCEANOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENTS IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT ECOSYSTEM TO INCLUDE WITHIN MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR INTERPRETING AND PREDICTING MICROBIAL CARBON FLOW. IN ADDITION, THIS PROJECT PROVIDES EDUCATION AND AT-SEA RESEARCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW SCIENTISTS, INCLUDING GRADUATE STUDENTS, POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS, AND A COHORT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE MARINE SCIENCES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO IDENTIFY THE ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS AND MICROBIAL TAXA THAT ACCOUNT FOR THE VARIANCE IN MICROBIAL GROWTH EFFICIENCY ALONG LIGHT AND NUTRIENT GRADIENTS IN THE OCEAN. THE COAST SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WAS CREATED IN 2011 AND PLACES CSU UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WITH STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND PRIVATE INDUSTRY. STUDENT INTERNS WORK SIDE BY SIDE WITH PROFESSIONALS ON CURRENT PROJECTS IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PUBLIC POLICY THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, STUDENTS ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON RESEARCH AND EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITIES, LEARN VALUABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE THE WORKFORCE FIRST HAND. SINCE 2011, COAST HAS SUCCESSFULLY PLACED MORE THAN 120 CSU STUDENTS WITH INTERNSHIP HOSTS. THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM RUNS FOR TEN WEEKS EVERY SUMMER, DURING WHICH STUDENT INTERNS SERVE 40 HOURS PER WEEK. THEY RECEIVE A STIPEND TO HELP THEM DEFRAY LIVING EXPENSES WHILE THEY ENGAGE IN THIS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. COAST PROVIDES HALF OF THE STIPEND COST AND THE HOST PROVIDES THE OTHER HALF. PROVIDING STIPENDS IS CRITICAL TO ENSURING THAT THERE IS A DIVERSE POOL OF APPLICANTS INCLUDING STUDEN
