ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT THE INTEGRATED INDIGENOUS STEM EDUCATION (IISE) MODEL CREATE AND DEPLOY THE SECONDARY STEM EDUCATION PROGRAM (SSEP) PROVIDE UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL) TRAINING ENLIST INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS FOR THE IISE MODEL BUILD AND ENHANCE RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND SCHOOLS DEVELOP AND DELIVER FOUR HUB-ALIGNED STEM UNITS IN LOCAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS BY 2029 BUILD A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT (WFD) AND CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) CURRICULA, CREDENTIALS, AND PROGRAMS IN SIX HUB-ALIGNED STEM AREAS ENROLL AT LEAST 50 STUDENTS ANNUALLY IN THE NEW CTE AND STEM PROGRAMS BY 2029 COMPLETE REFINEMENT AND SCALING OF STEM AND CTE PROGRAMMING EVALUATE THE STEM/CTE PATHWAYS AND THE INTEGRATED INDIGENOUS STEM EDUCATION MODEL FROM 2024 TO 2026

SUPPORTING TALENT WITH ALIGNED RESOURCES FOR STEM STUDENTS -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA, MONTANA TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY, AND BLACKFEET COMMUNITY COLLEGE. SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE AND BLACKFEET COMMUNITY COLLEGE ARE BOTH TRIBAL COLLEGES. OVER ITS SIX-YEAR DURATION, THIS PROJECT WILL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS TO 105 UNIQUE FULL-TIME STEM STUDENTS WHO ARE PURSUING ASSOCIATE AND/OR BACHELOR DEGREES IN BIOLOGICAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS, PHYSICAL SCIENCES, ENGINEERING, COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES, AND/OR NATURAL RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION. FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMS WILL RECEIVE FOUR-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS WHILE TRANSFER STUDENTS AND FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS WILL RECEIVE TWO-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS. STUDENTS IN THE PROJECT WILL HAVE ACCESS TO A WIDE VARIETY OF SUPPORTS SUCH AS INDIVIDUAL MENTORING FROM STEM FACULTY MEMBERS AND PEERS AND MONTHLY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES WITH STUDENTS FROM ALL FOUR INSTITUTIONS. ONE OF THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM IS THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN FOUR INSTITUTIONS. THIS INCREASED PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN PUBLIC RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS AND TRIBAL COLLEGES WILL FACILITATE A BIDIRECTIONAL SHARING OF BEST PRACTICES FOR MENTORING, INCLUSIVE INSTRUCTION, AND STUDENT SUPPORT. THE PARTNERSHIP WILL ALSO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH ACCESS TO PEERS AND FACULTY MEMBERS AT THREE OTHER INSTITUTIONS WITHIN THE STATE. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF LOW-INCOME, HIGH-ACHIEVING UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THE AIMS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO INCREASE THE FIRST-YEAR RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES FOR EACH STUDENT COHORT, IMPROVE TRANSITION AFTER GRADUATION TO EITHER A STEM CAREER OR FURTHER HIGHER EDUCATION, AND ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ISSUES AND FACTORS IMPACTING ADVANCEMENT ALONG THE ACADEMIC PATHWAY. MONTANA FACES POST-SECONDARY PERSISTENCE CHALLENGES WITH TWO OF ITS LARGEST POPULATION GROUPS: NATIVE AMERICANS AND INDIVIDUALS FROM EXTREMELY RURAL AREAS. EACH GROUP FACES UNIQUE PERSISTENCE CHALLENGES, WITH SOME COMMONALITIES (E.G., STRONG TIES TO FAMILY/LAND, CULTURE SHOCK, STEREOTYPES). STUDENTS WITH POSITIVE STEM-BASED IDENTITIES PERFORM BETTER ACADEMICALLY AND ARE MORE LIKELY TO PERSIST TO EARN A DEGREE AND STAY IN A STEM FIELD. HOWEVER, STEM-BASED IDENTITIES CAN CLASH WITH PERSONAL IDENTITIES, ESPECIALLY FOR STUDENTS FROM MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. THIS PROJECT WILL ADD UNDERSTANDING IN HOW TO DEVELOP INTEGRATED IDENTITIES THAT INCORPORATE STEM IDENTITIES AND PERSONAL/CULTURAL IDENTITIES. TO ADDRESS THE QUESTION OF INTEGRATED IDENTITIES, THE SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH TEAM WILL USE A MIXED-METHODS DESIGN. FINDINGS WILL BE SYNTHESIZED INTO CULTURALLY-ATTUNED, PLACE-BASED KNOWLEDGE THAT IS USEFUL FOR TEACHING, MENTORSHIP, AND POLICY IN STEM PROGRAMS AT TRIBAL AND NON-TRIBAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THIS PROJECT WILL DISSEMINATE RESEARCH FINDINGS, SUCCESSES, AND LESSONS LEARNED TO APPROPRIATE STAKEHOLDERS VIA LOCAL AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS, PRESENTATIONS AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL EVENTS, AND PUBLICATIONS IN RELEVANT JOURNALS. THESE DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES WILL TAKE PLACE ON EACH CAMPUS AND WITHIN COMMUNITIES AS APPROPRIATE (E.G. TRIBAL COUNCIL MEETINGS, COMMUNITY FORUMS, AND CONTRIBUTION TO NEWSLETTERS, WEBSITES, AND OTHER VENUES). THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF'S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. IT ALSO AIMS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE STEM WORKERS, AND TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, TRANSFER, GRADUATION, AND ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

(2022) VISION FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY EARTH SYSTEMS SCIENCE THAT EXPLORES INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PHYSICAL, NATURAL, AND SOCIAL PROCESSES THROUGH WEAVING OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE ? BUILDING COMMUNITY-CENTERED HEALTH RESEARCH CAPACITY IN A TRIBAL COLLEGE SETTING: SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE NARCH - AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKA NATIVE (AIAN) COMMUNITIES ARE INCREASINGLY LEADING THEIR OWN RESEARCH AND HEALTH INITIATIVES TO ADDRESS HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION EFFORTS. SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE (SKC) PROPOSES TO USE THIS NARCH R34 PLANNING GRANT TO LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR A NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH CENTER FOR HEALTH (SKC NARCH) THAT IS LOCALLY DRIVEN, SCIENTIFICALLY RIGOROUS, AND GROUNDED IN THE HEALTH-RELATED CUSTOMS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND PERSPECTIVES OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THROUGH THIS GRANT, WE WILL: IDENTIFY RESEARCH PRIORITIES AND NARCH COMPONENTS (E.G., RESEARCH PROJECTS, CAREER ENHANCEMENT) THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND INPUT. ASSESS AND STRENGTHEN SKC’S ADMINISTRATIVE AND WORKFORCE CAPACITY TO SUPPORT AN ADMINISTRATIVE CORE AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF A FUTURE S06 NARCH APPLICATION. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH COLLABORATORS AND ADVISORS WHO SHARE OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH RESEARCH. OUR APPROACH COMBINES COMMUNITY-BASED PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (CBPR) WITH STRUCTURED TOOLS SUCH AS THE INDIGENOUS EVALUATION FRAMEWORK. THE OUTCOME WILL BE OUR STORY — SKC’S VISION AND AGENDA FOR RESEARCH AND TRAINING IN HEALTH AND WELLBEING — AND A CLEAR PLAN TO SUBMIT A COMPETITIVE NARCH S06 PROPOSAL IN 2027.

CONTROL OF ANNUAL INVASIVE GRASSES IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN INTERMOUNTAIN MONTANE GRASSLANDS WITH ESPLANADE (INDAZIFLAM) HERBICIDE AND NO-TILL SEEDINGVENTENATA (VENTENATA DUBIA) REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO WESTERN MONTANA RANGELANDS. VENTENATA IS FOUND IN SITES INFESTED WITH MEDUSAHEAD WILDRYE (TAEANIATHERUM CAPUT-MEDUSAE) AND CHEATGRASS (BROMUS TECTORUM) FORMING A VENTENATA-MEDUSAHEAD-CHEATGRASS (VMC) WINTER ANNUAL INVASIVE GRASS COMPLEX. CHEATGRASS IS WIDESPREAD, WHEREAS VENTENATA AND MEDUSAHEAD ARE NEW INVADERS THAT ARE BEING FOUND ON MORE LAND TYPES INCLUDING RANGE, DRY PASTURE, ROADWAYS, SUB-IRRIGATED, AND SEASONALLY IRRIGATED LANDS. CHEATGRASS PROVIDES SEASONAL GRAZING FOR LIVESTOCK AND WILDLIFE, WHEREAS VENTENATA AND MEDUSAHEAD PROVIDE MINIMAL TO NO FORAGE VALUE. VENTENATA WILL EVENTUALLY REPLACE CHEATGRASS AND MEDUSAHEAD, FURTHER REDUCING FORAGE AND DEGRADING THE SITE (HIRONAKA, 1994). THE VMC COMPLEX FOLLOWS INVASIONAL MELTDOWN ECOLOGICAL THEORY, WHERE ONE INVASIVE SPECIES IS REPLACED BY ANOTHER INVASIVE SPECIES, TRANSFORMING HABITATS, DEGRADING ECOSYSTEMS, AND REDUCING BIODIVERSITY CAUSING SEVERE NEGATIVE IMPACTS THAT ARE EXPLOITED BY ANOTHER MORE DAMAGING INVASIVE (SIMBERLOFF, 1999). CURRENTLY WE HAVE NO PROVEN STRATEGIES DESIGNED TO CONTAIN VMC AND RESTORE PRODUCTIVITY. WE WILL TEST ESPLANADE (INDAZIFLAM) ALONE AND WITH THREE TANK-MIX PARTNER HERBICIDES, AND NO-TILL SEEDING OF NATIVE AND INTRODUCED GRASSES FOR SUPPRESSING VMC AND RESTORING ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS.WE HYPOTHESIZE TIMELY APPLICATION OF ESPLANADE (INDAZIFLAM) ALONE AND WITH TANK-MIX PARTNER HERBICIDES WILL RELEASE IN-SITU PERENNIAL GRASSES, AND NO-TILL SEEDING OF NATIVE AND INTRODUCED GRASSES WILL INCREASE CONTAINMENT AND RESTORATION SUCCESS.OBJECTIVE 1. TEST EFFICACY OF HERBICIDES ON VENTENATA, MEDUSAHEAD, AND CHEATGRASS.OBJECTIVE 2. RELEASE IN SITU PERENNIAL GRASSES AND TEST ESTABLISHMENT OF SEVERAL GRASSES WITH NO-TILL SEEDING.OBJECTIVE 3. ENHANCED RESEARCH AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FOR UNDERGRADUATES USING X-RAY DIFFRACTION - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT: SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE (SKC), ON THE FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION IN MONTANA, IS A WELL- ESTABLISHED AND VITAL TRIBAL COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY (TCU) THAT PRIMARILY SERVES UNDERGRADUATES FROM INDIGENOUS AND RURAL COMMUNITIES. THE DEPARTMENT OF LIFE SCIENCES AT SKC WAS THE FIRST TCU TO OFFER A BACHELOR’S IN CELL BIOLOGY AND IS CURRENTLY THE ONLY TRIBAL COLLEGE TO OFFER A BACHELOR’S IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES. THESE DEGREE TRACKS ARE COMPLEMENTED BY A MOLECULAR- AND CHEMISTRY-INTENSIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM CENTERED IN THE ONE HEALTH PHILOSOPHY. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM INFRASTRUCTURE WAS INITIALLY BUILT AROUND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METALS; HOWEVER, MUCH OF THE SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT IS BECOMING ANTIQUATED AND NOT WELL SUITED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE PROGRAM’S BIOMEDICALLY-FOCUSED STUDENTS. THEREFORE, THE VISION OF THE PROGRAM IS TO REVITALIZE ITS INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGH THE ACQUISITION OF A KEY PIECE OF EQUIPMENT: A BRUKER D6 PHASER X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETER (XRD) ALONG WITH ACCESSORY STAGES TO CHARACTERIZE SMALL, AIR-SENSITIVE SAMPLES AND SAMPLES UNDERGOING PHASE TRANSITIONS WITH TEMPERATURE VARIATION. THIS POWERFUL BENCHTOP XRD REQUIRES RELATIVELY MINIMAL MAINTENANCE OVER A LONG LIFESPAN AND IS USER FRIENDLY FOR UNDERGRADUATES; THUS, PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR DIVERSE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDY THE ATOMISTIC STRUCTURE OF COMPOUNDS WHICH IS CURRENTLY NOT POSSIBLE AT SKC. THE MORE DETAILED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS PROVIDED BY XRD WILL SYNERGIZE WITH EXISTING EQUIPMENT THAT STILL FUNCTIONS TO PROVIDE BASIC FUNCTIONAL GROUP INFORMATION OF COMPOUNDS IN A NUMBER OF ACADEMIC COURSES AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. SIMILARLY, THE NEW AVENUES OF RESEARCH DISCOVERY AND/OR COLLABORATION WILL SIGNIFICANTLY HELP THE PROGRAM ACHIEVE ITS IMMEDIATE AND LONG-TERM GOALS; WHILE, SIMULTANEOUSLY DEVELOPING UNDERGRADUATES WITH A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF STRUCTURE FOR PROMISING CAREERS IN ADVANCED BIOMEDICAL FIELDS SUCH AS PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE, NANOMATERIALS, AND FORENSIC-BASED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS.

** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.**, THE CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE AND INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE INTEGRATION PROJECT (CSAIKI) AIMS TO PROMOTE FOOD SECURITY, EMPOWER YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP AMONG THE SÉLIŠ (SALISH), KSANKA (KOOTENAI), AND QL'ISPÉ (PEND D'OREILLE OR KALISPEL) TRIBES (SKQ), AND FACILITATE IMPLEMENTATION OF FOOD SYSTEMS TO MITIGATE THE IMPACTS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE. THE SPECIFIC AIM OF CSAIKI IS TO BUILD A RESILIENT AND SELF-SUFFICIENT COMMUNITY, DEEPLY ROOTED IN CULTURAL HERITAGE WHILE EMBRACING INNOVATION. THIS PROJECT WILL EXTEND RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROJECTS COMPLETED BY SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE EXTENSION (SKCE) WITH RESIDENTS OF THE FLATHEAD RESERVATION AS WELL AS EXTENDING ONTO THE KALISPEL RESERVATION IN WASHINGTON. BY COLLABORATING WITH FLATHEAD RESERVATION SCHOOLS THROUGH THE 'SCHOOL GARDEN NETWORK' AND THE COMMUNITY 'GARDENS FOR LIFE' PROJECTS WE WILL BUILD CAPACITY TO CONDUCT THE HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE DIETS FOR ALL NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM LOCALLY AND WITH THE KALISPEL RESERVATION WORKING WITH THE KALISPEL FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBAL EXTENSION PROGRAM, (KALISPEL FRTEP). THIS INITIATIVE IS NOT ONLY ABOUT IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES, INCREASING KNOWLEDGE, AND NUTRITION EDUCATION, BUT ALSO ABOUT FOSTERING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, CULTURAL PRIDE, AND ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE. BY INTEGRATING TRADITIONAL INDIGENOUS AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES, SKQ TRIBAL CULTURAL VALUES, NUTRITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, AND MODERN CLIMATE-SMART FARMING TECHNIQUES, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE HANDS-ON TRAINING, COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS, AND ONGOING MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNITY DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING GARDENS, RAISED GARDEN BOXES, AND FAMILY GARDENS. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL ENGAGE YOUTH THROUGH INTERNSHIPS, PODCASTING, AND PEER-LED EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, FOSTERING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND COMMUNITY COHESION. THE LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO CREATE A CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURAL FRAMEWORK THAT INTEGRATES TRADITIONAL INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE WITH CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES, THEREBY PROMOTING FOOD SECURITY AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES. THE TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE INTEGRATED INTO THIS PROJECT WILL BE SOURCED FROM A DIVERSE RANGE OF EXISTING CURRICULA, ENSURING A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES.PROGRAMS LIKE 'ADVANCING HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE DIETS,' 'GARDEN FOR LIFE,' 'SCHOOL GARDEN NETWORK,' 'SQUARE FOOT GARDENING', 'NEXT GENERATION. YOUTH GARDENING,' 'MY HOME MY HEALTH,' AND 'ONE HEALTH' WILL FORM THE CORE OF THIS HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INTEGRATED PROGRAM. BUILDING UPON THESE DEVELOPED CURRICULA AND FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE, OUR INITIATIVE ALSO ALIGNS WITH THE VALUES OF THE SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE (SKC) LIVING LANDSCAPES WEB-BASED CLIMATE CHANGE CURRICULUM. COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT (CHD) IS A DEPARTMENT OF SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE (SKC) LOCATED ON THE FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION IN WESTERN MONTANA, AND HOME TO THE SALISH, KOOTENAI AND PEND D'OREILLE PEOPLE. SINCE 1977, SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE HAS SERVED THE FLATHEAD RESERVATION AS A CENTER FOR LEARNING AND DISCOVERY. SKC HAS BEEN ACCREDITED SINCE 1984 AND IS A LEADER WITHIN THE AMERICAN INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATION CONSORTIUM, THE GOVERNING BODY FOR ALL 37 TRIBAL COLLEGES. THE COLLEGE PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN REVITALIZATION AND PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL PRACTICES AND THE LANGUAGES OF THE SALISH, KOOTENAI AND PEND D'OREILLE PEOPLE.THE SKC-CHD ORIGINATED IN THE EARLY 2000'S TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SKC EXTENSION (SKCE) TO FACILITATE COMPASSIONATE HEALTH AND WELLNESS EDUCATION FOR THE SÉLIŠ (SALISH), KSANKA (KOOTENAI) AND QÍISPÉ (PEND D'OREILLE) PEOPLES OF THE FLATHEAD NATION.THE SKC-CHD AND SKCE, LED BY VIRGIL DUPUIS, HAVE COLLABORATEDOVER THE YEARS TO EXPAND PROGRAM REACH. RECENTLY, THE SKCE DEVELOPED AN ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION AND HUMAN HEALTH RESTORATION LOGIC MODEL FOR 2019-2024 AND HAS IDENTIFIED TWO SPECIFIC AIMS. THIS CHD PROJECT ALIGNS WITH SPECIFIC AIM #1: IMPROVE HUMAN HEALTH AND THE RESERVATION ECONOMY BY IMPROVING THE RESERVATION FOOD SYSTEMS. SPECIFICALLY, THE SKCE LOGIC MODEL DESCRIBES IMPROVING COMMUNITY HEALTH AND FOOD SYSTEMS BY PROVIDING A) HEALTHY COOKING INSTRUCTION, NUTRITIONAL MESSAGING, B) COMMUNITY AND FAMILY GARDENING, AND C) FOOD, NUTRITION, AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY; AMONGST OTHER ACTIVITIES. ADDITIONALLY, THIS SPECIFIC AIM AND THE IDENTIFIED ACTIVITIES ALIGN WITH THE SKC CHD PROPOSED ACTIVITIES AND THE STAKEHOLDER INPUT PLAN.SKC-CHD HAS DESIGNED THIS PROJECT TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF THE COMMUNITIES BY ENGAGING MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF TWO EAGLE RIVER SCHOOL (TERS). TERS WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE CONFEDERATED SALISH AND KOOTENAI TRIBES MORE THEN 40 YEARS AGO TO PROVIDE TRIBAL YOUTH WITH SECONDARY EDUCATION BUILT AROUND CULTURE AND LANGUAGE. IT IS RUN BY THE TRIBES WITH ADDITIONAL OVERSIGHT FROM THE BUREAU OF INDIAN EDUCATION, THE MONTANA OFFICE OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION AND A NATIONAL ACCREDITING AGENCY. IT CURRENTLY SERVES MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS. THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL INTEGRATE SOCIAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES WHILE INCORPORATING BOTH TECHNICAL AND LEADERSHIP ABILITIES THAT WILL ENCOURAGE STUDENT PARTICIPANTS TO MAKE LIFELONG HEALTHIER FOOD AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES.
