THE YOUTH WHO WILL COLLECT PLANT MATERIAL WITH THE PURPOSE OF PROPAGATING SEEDS PLANTS TO USE FOR RESTORING A WIDE ARRAY OF HABITATS IN THE SOUTHWEST. THIS PROGRAM SEEKS TO UTILIZE QUALIFIED NON-PROFIT YOUTH AND VETERAN SERVING ORGANIZATIONS TO CARRY OUT APPROPRIATE NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION, EDUCATION, VOLUNTEER SERVICE AND EDUCATION PROJECTS ON DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR LANDS THROUGH AUTHORIZED NPS PROGRAMS. THIS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WILL STRENGTHEN VISITOR EXPERIENCE AND INTERPRETIVE SERVICES BY HELPING PARKS REFINE EDUCATIONAL CONTENT, DEVELOP COMMUNICATION MATERIALS, AND SUPPORT BOTH INPERSON AND DIGITAL PROGRAMMING. INTERNS WILL COLLABORATE ACROSS MULTIPLE SITES TO CREATE SHARED RESOURCES, CONTRIBUTE TO UNIFIED MESSAGING, AND COMPLETE A CAPSTONE PROJECT THAT ADVANCES FUTURE CIVIL RIGHTS INTERPRETATION. OVER A 46WEEK PERIOD, TEN INTERNS WILL SUPPORT THE INTERPRETATION AND EDUCATION DIVISION AT TEN PARKS, HELPING THEM REMAIN OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE DURING INCREASED VISITATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE NATIONS 250TH ANNIVERSARY. THROUGH STRUCTURED MENTORSHIP AND HANDSON EXPERIENCE, PARTICIPANTS WILL BUILD PROFESSIONAL SKILLS WHILE ENHANCING PARK OPERATIONS AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT. THE NATURAL RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM IS THE PRINCIPLE MEANS THROUGH WHICH THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS) EVALUATES AND IMPROVES THE HEALTH OF WATERSHEDS, LANDSCAPES, AND MARINE AND COASTAL RESOURCES, SUSTAINS BIOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES ON THE LANDS AND WATERS IN PARKS, AND ACTIVELY ENDEAVORS TO IMPROVE THE RESILIENCY OF THESE NATURAL RESOURCES AND ADAPT THEM TO THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. TO CARRY OUT AND FURTHER THIS STEWARDSHIP RESPONSIBILITY, NPS IMPLEMENTS PROGRAMS THAT ENCOMPASS A BROAD RANGE OF RESEARCH, OPERATIONAL, AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES BY UTILIZING PARK PERSONNEL AND CONTRACTOR SUPPORT OR COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO ENGAGE IN NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES IN BOTH A FIELD AND OFFICE SETTING. YOUTH PARTICIPANTS WILL BE TRAINED BY NPS STAFF TO IDENTIFY, REPORT, AND MANAGE INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES FOUND ACROSS THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION PARKS AND ADJACENT LAND. THE ANCESTRAL LANDS CONSERVATION CORPS FY24 PROJECT WILL ENGAGE INDIGENOUS YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS IN MEANINGFUL CONSERVATION PROJECTS AT NATIONAL PARKS SERVICE SITES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND ADDRESS PRIORITIES OUTLINED BY DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND NPS DIRECTOR CHUCK SAMS. THIS PROJECT IS MODELED ON THE ANCESTRAL LANDS CONSERVATION CORPS (ALCC) PROGRAM OPERATED BY CONSERVATION LEGACY SINCE 2008. ALCC WAS CREATED TO BRING CONSERVATION SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES TO INDIGENOUS YOUTH, YOUNG ADULTS, AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES. ALCC OPERATES PROGRAMS IN THE PUEBLOS OF ACOMA, ISLETA, AND ZUNI, NAVAJO NATION, AND HOPI NATION. ALCC HAS COLLABORATED WITH OTHER CORPS PROGRAMS TO HELP THEM CATALYZE NEW PROGRAMS THAT CENTER AND SERVE INDIGENOUS PARTICIPANTS AND COMMUNITIES. THIS PROJECT WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT EXISTING PROGRAMS WITH TRIBES AND CORPS PARTNERS AND WILL HELP CATALYZE NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN OTHER TRIBAL NATIONS. C O CANAL NHP WILL ENGAGE YOUTH INTERNS, RECRUITED BY THE CONSERVATION LEGACY TO EXPAND YOUTH COMMUNITY OUTREACH. TO CONNECT WITH YOUTH, THE INTERNS WILL ENHANCE THE C O CANAL NHP IN-PERSON AND DIGITAL INTERPRETATION. THE YOUTH INTERNS WILL BE MENTORED BY INTERPRETATION STAFF. YOUTH INTERNS WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH INTO THE MAIN PARK STORY AND UNDERTOLD STORIES. THEY WILL PLAN AND PREPARE PROGRAMS FOR A MAJOR INTERPRETIVE PROGRAM. THEY WILL PRESENT THE INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS DIGITALLY AND ON THE PARKS BOATS. A SEPARATE SIX PERSON TRAIL CREW WILL BUILD 1.5 MILES OF NEW TRAIL TO CONNECT CAMP GREENTOP TO THE TRAIL SYSTEM SO VISITORS CAN HIKE FROM THEIR CABIN, WHICH CURRENTLY IS NOT POSSIBLE.
