RAMAH NAVAJO SPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM FOR INDIANS - ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES OFFICE OF MINORITY HEALTH, AMERICAN INDIANS/ALASKA NATIVES ARE NEARLY THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN NON-HISPANIC WHITES TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES. WITHIN THE COMMUNITY OF THE RAMAH NAVAJOS, DIABETES CONTINUES TO BE THE NUMBER ONE HEALTH CONCERN AMONG THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THIS CONCERN IS VALID, AS AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES IN CIBOLA AND MCKINLEY COUNTIES REPORT A DIABETES RATE APPROXIMATELY DOUBT THE STATE AND NATIONAL AVERAGES (20% VS ABOUT 10%). THE RAMAH NAVAJO SDPI PROGRAM PROPOSES TO COMBAT THIS ISSUE BY IMPLEMENTING DIABETES PREVENTIVE ACTIVITIES AND EDUCATION AT THE LOCAL WELLNESS CENTER AND WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. THE PROGRAM WILL ALSO PARTNER WITH THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL DIABETES EDUCATION AND PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES TO GET A JUMPSTART ON CREATING HEALTHY HABITS AMONG THE COMMUNITY YOUTH. UTILIZING PREVENTATIVE EFFORTS AND INCREASING EDUCATION REGARDING DIABETES IN THE COMMUNITY, WE HOPE TO GREATLY REDUCE THE PREVALENCE OF DIABETES IN THE COMMUNITY.
