COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: TRI-ALLIANCE FOR POST-AWARD INNOVATION -THE TRI-ALLIANCE CONSORTIUM AIMS TO TRANSFORM POST-AWARD ACTIVITIES AT EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS (ERIS) TO REDUCE ADMINISTRATIVE BURDEN, BETTER SUPPORT FACULTY IN THEIR RESEARCH, AND INCREASE GRANT ACTIVITY. WITHOUT ADEQUATE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE, FACULTY AND STAFF AT ERIS FACE DISTINCT CHALLENGES, INCLUDING LACK OF SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING THE POST-AWARD RESPONSIBILITIES, ACCESS TO ACCURATE INFORMATION, AND POST-AWARD COMPLIANCE. ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES CAN HELP INCREASE THE RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DIVERSE INSTITUTIONS, THEREBY SUPPORTING U.S. ECONOMIC GROWTH. THE TRI-ALLIANCE CONSORTIUM, WHICH INCLUDES LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY, AND UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO, IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCING RESEARCH EXCELLENCE THROUGH COLLABORATION AND RESOURCE SHARING. THESE CALIFORNIA-BASED INSTITUTIONS, PART OF THE ASSOCIATION OF JESUIT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITY (AJCU), AND RECOGNIZED AS ERIS, WILL FOCUS ON THREE CORE COMPONENTS: 1) BUILDING CAPACITY FOR POST-AWARD SERVICE STRUCTURES, FUNCTIONS, AND DATA COLLECTION; 2) DEVELOPING SHARED EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCE MATERIALS TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND REDUCE ADMINISTRATIVE BURDENS; AND 3) PILOTING INNOVATIVE CROSS-DIVISION SUPPORT ROLES THAT SPAN PRE- AND POST-AWARD ADMINISTRATION. BY SHARING RESOURCES, PILOTING INNOVATIVE POSITIONS, AND DOCUMENTING BEST PRACTICES, THE TRI-ALLIANCE WILL CREATE A TOOLKIT AVAILABLE TO ERIS, THUS FOSTERING A STRONGER, MORE EFFICIENT RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT. UPTAKE, SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COVID?19 VACCINES DURING PREGNANCY - PROJECT SUMMARY PREGNANT PERSONS ARE AT INCREASED RISK FOR SEVERE COVD-19 ILLNESS COMPARED TO NON-PREGNANT WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE, EXPERIENCING HIGHER RATES OF ADMISSION TO INTENSIVE CARE, MECHANICAL VENTILATION AND DEATH. IN ADDITION TO THE DIRECT IMPACTS ON THE HEALTH OF PREGNANT PERSONS, THERE IS GROWING EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST COVID-19 ADVERSELY IMPACTS FETAL AND NEONATAL HEALTH. AS OF MAY 2021, THREE VACCINES HAVE BEEN ISSUED EMERGENCY USE APPROVAL IN THE US. HOWEVER, BECAUSE PREGNANT PERSONS WERE EXCLUDED FROM INITIAL PHASE 3 CLINICAL TRIALS, DATA TO CONFIRM THE SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COVID-19 VACCINATION DURING PREGNANCY ARE LACKING. DRIVEN BY THIS LIMITED DATA, OBSTETRIC AND PUBLIC HEALTH GOVERNING BODIES DO NOT CURRENTLY DIRECTLY RECOMMEND VACCINATION FOR PREGNANT PERSONS. THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNECOLOGISTS AND THE US CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) ADVISE THAT COVID-19 VACCINES SHOULD NOT BE WITHHELD FROM PREGNANT PERSONS. AS A RESULT, THE DECISION TO VACCINATE IS MADE AT THE INDIVIDUAL LEVEL, AND PREGNANT PERSONS EXPRESS ANXIETY AROUND MAKING THIS DECISION. ADDITIONAL DATA TO INFORM THE SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COVID-19 VACCINES ADMINISTERED DURING PREGNANCY WOULD STRENGTHEN CURRENT CLINICAL GUIDELINES. DESPITE WEAK GUIDANCE, INDIVIDUALS ARE CHOOSING TO BE VACCINATED DURING PREGNANCY. AS OF 3 MAY 2021, 106,241 PREGNANT PERSONS WERE REPORTED AS HAVING RECEIVED A COVID-19 VACCINE THROUGH V-SAFE, THE CDC’S ACTIVE VACCINE SAFETY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM. WHEN SURVEYED, MORE THAN 50% OF PREGNANT PERSONS REPORT AN INTENTION TO RECEIVE A COVID-19 VACCINE. PHASE 2/3 CLINICAL TRIAL DATA ARE CURRENTLY BEING GATHERED TO EVALUATE SAFETY AND EFFICACY. WHILE THESE CLINICAL TRIAL DATA ARE BEING COLLECTED, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM LARGE OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF PREGNANT PERSONS WHO HAVE CHOSEN TO BE VACCINATED. LEVERAGING EXISTING NATIONAL MEDICAL CLAIMS AND ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS FOR MORE THAN 870,000 PREGNANCIES, WE PLAN TO CONDUCT LARGE-SCALE POST-IMPLEMENTATION COHORT STUDIES TO EVALUATE THE UPTAKE, SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COVID-19 VACCINES ADMINISTERED DURING PREGNANCY. COMPLETION OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE IMPORTANT EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE ON THE SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COVID-19 VACCINATION DURING PREGNANCY. THIS EVIDENCE WILL AID INFORMED DECISION AND POLICY-MAKING AROUND COVID-19 VACCINATION FOR PREGNANT PERSONS.

NURSE EDUCATION, PRACTICE, QUALITY AND RETENTION - WORKFORCE EXPANSION PROGRAM - THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS (SONHP) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO (USF) WILL PARTNER WITH ALAMEDA HEALTH SYSTEM (AHS) AND THE SAN FRANCISCO (SF) DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND SF HEALTH NETWORK (SFHN), (MEETING FUNDING PREFERENCES QUALIFICATION 2: SUBSTANTIALLY BENEFITS UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS OR QUALIFICATION 3: HELPS MEET PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING NEEDS IN STATE OR LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT) TO ADDRESS THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF NURSES, SPECIFICALLY IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS. OUR PROPOSAL, THE NURSE HEALTH EQUITY SCHOLARS INITIATIVE (NHESI) WILL (A) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF NURSING STUDENTS ENROLLED IN, RETAINED, AND GRADUATED FROM A BACCALAUREATE NURSING DEGREE PROGRAM; (B) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERGRADUATE (UG) NURSING STUDENTS RECEIVING ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED TRAINING IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS; (C) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UG NURSES EMPLOYED IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS POST-GRADUATION; AND (D) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PRECEPTORS AND CLINICAL FACULTY TO TRAIN NURSING STUDENTS IN BACCALAUREATE NURSING DEGREE PROGRAMS. CA IS IDENTIFIED BY HRSA AS ONE OF 10 STATES WITH THE GREATEST SHORTAGES IN THE NATION, WITH A PROJECTED SHORTAGE OF 26% IN 2036, MEETING FUNDING PRIORITY 1 OF THIS FUNDING CALL. A MAJORITY OF CALIFORNIANS WILL IDENTIFY AS PEOPLE OF COLOR BY 2030 BUT ARE SEVERELY UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE STATE’S NURSING WORKFORCE. CALIFORNIA’S POPULATION IS PROJECTED TO INCREASE BY 20% FROM 2010 TO 2060, WITH THE MOST GROWTH AMONG ADULTS AGE 65 AND OLDER, REPRESENTING NEARLY ONE IN FOUR CALIFORNIANS BY 2060. AS THE STATE’S POPULATION DIVERSIFIES AND AGES, WE WILL REQUIRE A NURSING WORKFORCE THAT MIRRORS THE RACIAL, ETHNIC AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STATE AND IS EDUCATED TO PROVIDE SPECIALIZED GERIATRIC CARE. AS A TOP RANKED NURSING PROGRAM WITH A RACIALLY, ETHNICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE STUDENT PROFILE, AN AVERAGE RN LICENSURE EXAM PASS RATE OF AT LEAST 90% AND A 5-YEAR AVERAGE RETENTION RATE OF 97.5%, SONHP IS WELL SITUATED TO MEET THE GOALS OF THIS GRANT. OVER 90% OF OUR PRELICENSURE GRADUATES BECOME LICENSED IN CA AND REMAIN IN THE STATE TO WORK. ALIGNED WITH THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY’S GOALS, REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS, NHESI WILL (A) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED (DS) AND UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY (URM) NURSING STUDENTS ENROLLED IN, RETAINED, AND GRADUATED FROM THE USF BSN DEGREE PROGRAM; (B) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DS AND URM UG NURSING STUDENTS RECEIVING ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED TRAINING IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS; (C) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DS AND URM NEW GRADUATE NURSES EMPLOYED IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS POST-GRADUATION; AND (D) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DIVERSE PRECEPTORS AND CLINICAL FACULTY TO TRAIN NURSING STUDENTS IN BSN DEGREE PROGRAMS. OUR EFFORTS ADDRESS THE WORKFORCE PIPELINE AND ACADEMIC PROGRESSION, DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL EDUCATION, AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND RETENTION. NESTED WITHIN SONHP’S EXISTING BSN PROGRAM AND LEVERAGING ITS INFRASTRUCTURE, NHESI EXPANDS AN EXISTING PILOT LONGITUDINAL CLINICAL PLACEMENT (LCP) MODEL THAT IMMERSES BSN STUDENTS IN A SINGLE COMPREHENSIVE PUBLIC SAFETY-NET HEALTH SYSTEM FOR ALL DIRECT-CARE CLINICAL EDUCATION. WE BELIEVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE STRUCTURED, CONSISTENT AND SUPPORTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN THESE ENVIRONMENTS WILL CHOOSE TO WORK IN THESE SYSTEMS AS PROFESSIONALS, POSITIVELY IMPACTING WORKFORCE SHORTAGES. THEY WILL OBTAIN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED TO ADDRESS COMPLEX NEEDS OF LOW-INCOME AND MARGINALIZED POPULATIONS AND OLDER ADULTS, RECEIVING CARE IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SECTOR, ADDRESSING SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, UNMET HEALTH NEEDS, AND SIGNIFICANT FACTORS THAT FOSTER NEGATIVE BIAS AND ADVERSELY IMPACT CARE. WE WILL RECRUIT AND RETAIN CLINICAL NURSING FACULTY FROM AHS AND SFHN TO SUPPORT NHESI AND OTHER PROGRAMS. NHESI WILL ENSURE A WELL-EDUCATED WORKFORCE PIPELINE COMMITTED TO PRACTICING IN ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE SETTINGS IN PUBLIC SAFETY-NET FACILITIES.

IN ADDITION TO IDENTIFYING AND IMPORTING CRUCIAL IONS, NUTRIENTS, AND TRANSITION METALS, CELLS MUST ALSO RIGOROUSLY SELECT AND EXPORT A WIDE RANGE OF SUBSTRATES, INCLUDING PEPTIDES, POLYSACCHARIDES, AND TOXINS. THE CELL EMPLOYS ATP-BINDING CASSETTE (ABC) TRANSPORTERS TO DRIVE THE UNIDIRECTIONAL TRANSPORT OF SUBSTRATES AGAINST THEIR CONCENTRATION GRADIENTS. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW PROKARYOTIC ABC IMPORTERS UPTAKE NUTRIENTS THAT ARE CRUCIAL FOR SURVIVAL, AND THESE FINDINGS COULD PROVIDE NEW TARGETS FOR TREATMENT AGAINST BACTERIAL PATHOGENS. TOWARDS THIS END, WE WILL EMPLOY BIOCHEMICAL AND BIOPHYSICAL METHODS TO DISSECT HOW THE E. COLI METNI TRANSPORTER, AN ESTABLISHED MODEL SYSTEM, TRANSPORTS METHIONINE FROM THE PERIPLASM TO THE CYTOPLASM. WHILE THE MOST WIDELY- ACCEPTED MODEL FOR IMPORT IS BASED ON STRUCTURAL STUDIES, EMERGING FUNCTIONAL STUDIES SUGGEST A SUBSTANTIALLY DIFFERENT MODEL FOR SUBSTRATE TRANSLOCATION. THESE DISPARATE MODELS APPEAR TO CONFLICT; HOWEVER, WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE METNI TRANSPORTER CAN ADOPT MULTIPLE MODES OF TRANSPORT IN RESPONSE TO SUBSTRATE FEATURES AND AVAILABILITY. WE WILL USE THE TOOLS OF MECHANISTIC ENZYMOLOGY TO RESOLVE THESE LONGSTANDING ISSUES AND TO PROPOSE NEW MODELS THAT MAY MERGE PREVIOUS FINDINGS OR UNCOVER ENTIRELY NEW MECHANISMS OF ACTION. IN AIM 1, WE WILL TEST OUR HYPOTHESIS BY MEASURING THE KINETIC AND THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS OF INDIVIDUAL STEPS IN THE TRANSPORT CYCLE. USING DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES (L-MET, D-MET, AND LARGER METHIONINE DERIVATIVES) AND BINDING-IMPAIRED MUTANTS, WE WILL DISSECT THREE STEPS: (A) BINDING OF THE METQ COGNATE PERIPLASMIC PROTEIN TO THE METNI TRANSPORTER, (B) ATP BINDING AND HYDROLYSIS, AND (C) TRANSPORT. OUR FINDINGS COULD REVEAL THAT THE METNI-Q MECHANISM IS INHERENTLY VERSATILE AND COULD PREFERENTIALLY SELECT DIFFERENT TRANSLOCATION PATHWAYS DEPENDING ON THE SUBSTRATE. FOR AIM 2, WE HAVE GENERATED HETERODIMERIC METNI “CHIMERAS” TO DECIPHER IF THE TWO IDENTICAL ATP SITES WORK TOGETHER TO ENABLE EFFICIENT AND SPECIFIC TRANSPORT. SPECIFICALLY, WE WILL DETERMINE IF ONE OR TWO ATP MOLECULES ARE HYDROLYZED PER TRANSPORT CYCLE, AND IF TRANSPORT EFFICIENCY IS AFFECTED BY IMPAIRMENT OF ONE ATP SITE. OVERALL, OUR FINDINGS WILL YIELD CRITICAL INSIGHTS INTO HOW ABC TRANSPORTERS SELECT FOR DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES, AND HOW ATP USAGE DRIVES SUBSTRATE TRANSLOCATION ACROSS MEMBRANES.

BY PROMOTING INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AND BUILDING SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, ASPIRE-AI GENERATES ACTIONABLE KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS TO ADVANCE APPLIED AI RESEARCH AND INNOVATION. THE COHORT COLLABORATION WILL CREATE A MODEL FOR NON-R1 INSTITUTIONS TO LEVERAGE EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS TO ENHANCE REGIONAL CAPACITY IN RESPONDING TO EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND THE IMPACT IT WILL HAVE ON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. ADDITIONALLY, ASPIRE-AI WILL DRIVE INSTITUTIONAL CULTURAL CHANGE THAT ENCOURAGES AND SUPPORTS EXTERNAL COLLABORATION IN USE-INSPIRED RESEARCH, INNOVATION, AND WORKFORCE INITIATIVES. EVALUATING TEEN-PARENT DYNAMICS IN ADOLESCENT COVID-19 VACCINE ACCEPTANCE AND UPTAKE - PROJECT SUMMARY ALTHOUGH EARLY IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE MAJORITY OF HOSPITALIZATIONS AND DEATHS OCCURRED AMONG ADULTS, SINCE THE RISE OF THE DELTA VARIANT IN THE US, HOSPITALIZATIONS AMONG ADOLESCENTS HAVE STEADILY INCREASED. BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST 2021, THE HOSPITALIZATION RATE FOR ADOLESCENTS WITH COVID-19 INCREASED FIVE-FOLD. IN ADDITION TO THE DIRECT HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF COVID-19, ADOLESCENTS ARE A KEY GROUP FOR MITIGATING THE TRANSMISSION OF THE SARS-COV-2 VIRUS. THE REOPENING OF MIDDLE AND HIGH-SCHOOLS CREATES ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUSTAINED TRANSMISSION OF COVID-19 IN THE COMMUNITY, MAKING PREVENTION OF ADOLESCENT INFECTION A PUBLIC HEALTH PRIORITY FOR COVID-19 CONTROL. COVID-19 VACCINATION IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL INDIVIDUALS 12 YEARS AND OLDER AND REDUCES THE RISK OF INFECTION AND ADOLESCENT HOSPITALIZATION WITH COVID-19. DESPITE THE PUBLIC HEALTH BENEFITS, IMMUNIZATION RATES ARE SUBOPTIMAL AMONG US ADOLESCENTS. AS OF JULY 31, 2021, 42% OF US ADOLESCENTS AGED 12-17 YEARS OLD HAVE RECEIVED =1 DOSE OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE AND 32% WERE FULLY VACCINATED. THESE RATES FALL WELL BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF 76% OF THE US POPULATION =12 YEARS OF AGE WITH =1 DOSE OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE AND THE 65% FULLY VACCINATED. HISTORICALLY, INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE ADOLESCENT VACCINE COVERAGE HAVE ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY TARGETED PARENTS. AS A RESULT, WE CURRENTLY HAVE A POOR UNDERSTANDING OF VACCINE HESITANCY AMONG ADOLESCENTS AND HOW THIS RELATES TO VACCINE DECISION-MAKING. GIVEN A) POOR COVID-19 IMMUNIZATION RATES OBSERVED AMONG ADOLESCENTS, B) THE FACT THAT MORE THAN 30% OF ADOLESCENTS REPORT BEING INVOLVED IN VACCINE DECISION-MAKING, AND C) THE RECENT EXPANSION OF STATE POLICIES TO ALLOW ADOLESCENT CONSENT TO VACCINATION, EXAMINATION OF JOINT AND INDEPENDENT ADOLESCENT AND PARENTAL VACCINE ATTITUDES AND HOW THESE ATTITUDES DRIVE VACCINE ACCEPTANCE IS CRITICALLY NEEDED TO MORE EFFECTIVELY CONTROL THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. THROUGH AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO DATA COLLECTION AND NOVEL APPLICATION OF AN EXISTING STATISTICAL FRAMEWORK, WE AIM TO I) VALIDATE A MEASUREMENT TOOL FOR MONITORING COVID-19 VACCINE HESITANCY IN ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR PARENTS, II) IDENTIFY HOW THIS HESITANCY CORRELATES BETWEEN ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR PARENTS AND III) EVALUATE HOW ADOLESCENT AND PARENTAL VACCINE HESITANCY INTERACTS IN THE DECISION TO VACCINATE AGAINST COVID-19. INTERVENTIONS THAT EXCLUSIVELY TARGET PARENTS ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE EFFECTIVE COMPARED TO MULTILEVEL INTERVENTIONS TARGETING BOTH ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR PARENTS. EVIDENCE GENERATED BY THIS APPLICATION WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP SUCH INTERVENTIONS. IN FUTURE, THIS FRAMEWORK COULD BE APPLIED TO IMPROVE UPTAKE OF OTHER RECOMMENDED ADOLESCENT VACCINES.

DETERMINING THE CAUSAL PATHWAYS OF SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTORS OF HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS - PROJECT SUMMARY THE PURPOSE OF THIS R15 APPLICATION IS TO CHARACTERIZE THE BROADER ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THE EXPERIENCE OF VICTIMIZATION LEADS TO HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING IN COLLEGE POPULATIONS. THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL ALLOW FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAUSAL PATHWAYS BETWEEN CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL EXPOSURES AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL USE AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS. HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IS A SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEM AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS THAT LEADS TO MANY PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL, AND COGNITIVE CONSEQUENCES, INCLUDING DEATH. RECENTLY, 38% OF COLLEGE STUDENTS REPORTED ENGAGING IN BINGE DRINKING IN THE LAST MONTH AND 11.4% REPORTING HEAVY ALCOHOL USE. ALCOHOL USE HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH VIOLENT VICTIMIZATION, BULLYING, AND DISCRIMINATION, ALL OF WHICH ARE CONTEXTUAL SOCIAL EXPOSURES. HOWEVER, MOST STUDIES HAVE USED STUDY DESIGNS AND METHODS THAT ARE MORE VULNERABLE TO BIAS AND FEW HAVE EXAMINED THE SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENT OR “ACTIVITY SPACE” IN WHICH ALCOHOL USE OCCURS. SINCE IT IS LIKELY THAT THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL EXPOSURES AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING VARIES WITHIN CERTAIN DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPS, WE WILL ASSESS WHETHER THESE RELATIONSHIPS DIFFER BY GENDER AND BY RACE/ETHNICITY. ANALYSES WILL BE PERFORMED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE CAUSAL PATHWAYS BETWEEN CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL PREDICTORS AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL USE AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS, MORE SPECIFICALLY MEDIATION BY PSYCHOSOCIAL FACTORS. TO ADDRESS PREVIOUS GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL USE A SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL APPROACH THAT USES INNOVATIVE METHODS TO COLLECT MORE ACCURATE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION COMBINED WITH EXISTING AND NOVEL CAUSAL INFERENCE TECHNIQUES. WE PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) CHARACTERIZE THE ACTIVITY SPACES OF COLLEGE STUDENTS AND EXAMINE HOW THEY ARE CORRELATED WITH CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL EXPOSURES, AND ALCOHOL USE BEHAVIORS; 2) EXAMINE THE DIRECT ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN (A) ENVIRONMENTAL (I.E., PLACE-BASED EXPOSURES INCLUDING PHYSICAL DISORDER, CRIME/VIOLENCE, ALCOHOL OUTLETS, SOCIAL DISORDER) AND (B) SOCIAL CONTEXTS (I.E., VIOLENT VICTIMIZATION, BULLYING, AND DISCRIMINATION) AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS; AND 3) ASSESS MODERATION BY GENDER AND RACE/ETHNICITY AND MEDIATION BY POTENTIAL PSYCHOSOCIAL VARIABLES IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONTEXTUAL (A) ENVIRONMENTAL AND (B) SOCIAL EXPOSURES AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING. THIS RESEARCH WILL ADD TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAUSAL PATHWAYS BETWEEN CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL PREDICTORS AND HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS AND WILL HELP ELUCIDATE DIFFERENCES BY GENDER AND RACE/ETHNICITY. THIS NEW KNOWLEDGE WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION NEEDED TO DEVELOP APPROPRIATE AND EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS AIMED AT REDUCING HIGH-RISK ALCOHOL DRINKING AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS.

THESE SOCIETAL TRANSFORMATIONS ORIGINATED WITH RAPID ADVANCEMENTS IN THE FIELDS OF COMPUTER VISION AND NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING, THAT IS, THE PROCESSING OF IMAGES AND TEXTS. YET, A WIDE RANGE OF DATA IS NOT BEST REPRESENTED BY A GRID OF PIXELS OR A SEQUENCE OF WORDS. FOR EXAMPLE, (BIOMOLECULAR) SHAPES OR (SOCIAL) NETWORKS ARE DATA TYPES EXHIBITING LOCAL AND GLOBAL GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES THAT MIGHT NOT BE EFFICIENTLY LEVERAGED BY EXISTING DEEP LEARNING ARCHITECTURES. HENCE, THERE IS A NEED TO RIGOROUSLY UNDERSTAND AND EXPAND THE DATA TYPES TO WHICH DEEP LEARNING METHODS CAN BE APPLIED. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT CONSIDERS THE MORE ABSTRACT CELL COMPLEX DATA TYPE. THE WORK INTRODUCES AND AIMS TO QUANTIFY THE POTENTIAL OF CELL COMPLEX NETWORKS IN DEEP LEARNING. APPLICATIONS RANGE FROM COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, SOCIAL SCIENCE, AND ART, TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF DEEP LEARNING ITSELF. THE PROJECT WILL DISSEMINATE THESE IDEAS THROUGH PUBLICATIONS AND THE RELEASE OF OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE, DEMONSTRATION MATERIAL, AND DATASETS. THE RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TO ENHANCE EXISTING TIES BETWEEN DEEP LEARNING AND OTHER FIELDS THAT RELY ON GEOMETRIC, TOPOLOGICAL, AND COMBINATORIAL OBJECTS. THE NEEDS OF DIVERSE MACHINE LEARNING COMMUNITIES WILL BE ADDRESSED BY CAREFULLY CHOOSING PUBLICATION VENUES. RESEARCH TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED TO UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS, WHERE THE RECRUITING PROCESS WILL ENCOURAGE APPLICATIONS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. PAIR-PROGRAMMING SESSIONS, TOGETHER WITH OCCASIONAL HACKATHONS, WILL HELP TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF PRACTITIONERS IN TOPOLOGICAL AND GEOMETRIC DEEP LEARNING, COMPLEMENTING THEIR THEORETICAL TRAINING WITH PIVOTAL SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PRACTICES. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO FACILITATE OUTREACH THROUGH PUBLIC LECTURES FEATURING SPEAKERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO DEVELOP A UNIFYING MATHEMATICAL FRAMEWORK WHERE DEEP LEARNING MODELS AND PROTOCOLS CAN BE UNIVERSALLY DEFINED AND EXECUTED OVER CELL COMPLEX DOMAINS. SUCH DOMAINS GENERALIZE DISCRETE DOMAINS OF PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE SUCH AS GRAPHS, POINT CLOUDS, MESHES, AND SIMPLICIAL COMPLEXES. THE PROJECT FIRST UNIFIES EXISTING DEEP LEARNING COMPUTATIONAL BLOCKS INTO THE FRAMEWORK OF CELL COMPLEX NEURAL NETWORKS (CXNS). THE INVESTIGATORS PLAN TO RIGOROUSLY CONSTRUCT THE NECESSARY TOOLS OF NEURAL NETWORK COMPUTATIONAL PRIMITIVES OVER DOMAINS THAT HAVE GEOMETRIC, TOPOLOGICAL, AND COMBINATORIAL CHARACTERISTICS. THEY WILL INVESTIGATE IMPORTANT THEORETICAL QUESTIONS ASSOCIATED TO THESE MODELS, SUCH AS GENERALIZABILITY AND EXPRESSIVENESS IN THE LIGHT OF METRICS SPECIFICALLY DEFINED FOR CXNS. SECOND, THE PROJECT WILL HARNESS THE POWER OF DEEP LEARNING IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS THAT ARISE WHEN STUDYING DATA WITH SUCH TOPOLOGICAL AND COMBINATORIAL STRUCTURES. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE BENCHMARKS FOR GRAPH, POINT CLOUD, AND MESH DATA TYPES, LEVERAGING BOTH SIMULATED AND REAL DATASETS. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL DEVELOP AN OPEN-SOURCE PYTHON PACKAGE THAT GATHERS THE TOPOLOGICAL AND COMBINATORIAL DEEP LEARNING PRIMITIVES WITH AN INTERFACE ALLOWING STUDY OF THEIR THEORETICAL PROPERTIES. THIRD, THE PROJECT WILL APPLY THESE TOOLS TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF DEEP LEARNING ITSELF. THE WORK WILL LEVERAGE CXNS TO EXTRACT GEOMETRIC AND TOPOLOGICAL SUMMARIES OF THE SEQUENCE OF WEIGHT ITERATES GENERATED DURING THE TRAINING OF A GIVEN NETWORK. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL CONNECT THESE SUMMARIES TO THE GENERALIZABILITY OF THE DEEP LEARNING ALGORITHM AND ARCHITECTURE AT HAND. PRE- AND POST-SURVEYS WILL BE COLLECTED TO EVALUATE QUALITATIVE THEMES AND QUANTIFY THE SHIFTS IN STUDENTS' STEREOTYPES OF SCIENTISTS AND SCIENTIST RELATABILITY BEFORE AND AFTER AUTHORING SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHTS VERSUS EXPERIENCING SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHTS. STUDENT GRADES AND PASS RATES WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED DURING THE SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHTS INTERVENTION TO MEASURE SHIFTS IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. RESULTS EMERGING FROM THESE DATA WILL ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SIGNIFICANCE IN ENGAGING STEM STUDENTS AS ACTIVE AGENTS TO REFORM THE MESSAGING IN UNDERGRADUATE CHEMISTRY CURRICULA AS WELL AS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ADAPTING AND IMPLEMENTING THE SCIENTIST SPOTLIGHTS INTERVENTION TO A NEW DISCIPLINE, INSTITUTION, AND DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE CREATION, EXPLORATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROMISING PRACTICES AND TOOLS. CONTRIBUTIONS OF CREATIVITY TO STEM SUCCESS DURING AND AFTER COLLEGE: UNDERSTANDING CORE COGNITIVE DIMENSIONS AND ADVANCING COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES -CREATIVITY IS A FUNDAMENTALLY INTERESTING AND IMPORTANT ASPECT OF COGNITION. IT IS ALREADY AMONG THE MOST VALUABLE ATTRIBUTES OF THE STEM WORKFORCE, ESPECIALLY IN ENGINEERING WHICH REQUIRES GENERATING AND EVALUATING NOVEL SOLUTIONS TO COMPLEX PROBLEMS. IT IS PROJECTED TO BECOME EVEN MORE VITAL IN THE INNOVATION ECONOMY OF THE NEAR FUTURE. NONETHELESS, CREATIVITY IS NOT GENERALLY INTEGRATED INTO ENGINEERING COURSEWORK NOR IS THE EXPLICIT ASSESSMENT OF IT A COMMON PART OF STUDENT EVALUATION. INDEED, IT HAS PROVEN TO BE DIFFICULT TO DEFINE AND MEASURE. MORE EFFECTIVELY INTEGRATING CREATIVITY INTO UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING EDUCATION REQUIRES KNOWING WHICH DIMENSIONS OF CREATIVITY CONTRIBUTE MOST TO STUDENTS? FUTURE STEM SUCCESS. IN THIS PROJECT, RESEARCHERS WILL PARSE CREATIVE COGNITION AMONG ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ALONG CORE DIMENSIONS, INCLUDING VISUAL VS. VERBAL CREATIVITY AND GENERATIVE VS. EVALUATIVE CREATIVITY, AND, IN A LONGITUDINAL STUDY, EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CREATIVITY AND ENGINEERING SUCCESS DURING AND AFTER COLLEGE. THE SUBSTANTIAL TIME, EFFORT, AND COST REQUIRED FOR HUMANS TO SCORE CREATIVITY LIMITS THE INTEGRATION OF SUCH MEASUREMENT INTO STEM CLASSROOMS AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS. THE RESEARCHERS WILL USE EMERGING COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES TO TRANSFORM THE MEASUREMENT OF CREATIVITY, SEEKING TO OPEN NEW AVENUES FOR RESEARCHERS TO CAPTURE CREATIVITY IN STEM ON A LARGE SCALE AND IN EFFICIENT AND VALID WAYS. IMPROVED MEANS OF ASSESSING CREATIVITY AT SUCH A SCALE MAY BE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN LIGHT OF THE RISE OF HYBRID CREATIVITY IN WHICH HUMANS EVALUATE AI-GENERATED IDEAS. FINALLY, TRADITIONAL STEM ASSESSMENT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO LEAD TO ATTRITION AMONG UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY AND FEMALE STUDENTS IN STEM. ENCOURAGINGLY, CREATIVITY IS GENERALLY ASSOCIATED WITH LESS DISPARITY BY RACE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS (SES) THAN ARE TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC ASSESSMENTS, AND GENERALLY DOES NOT SHOW GENDER DISPARITY. THIS WORK WILL LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR THE EVENTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF ASSESSMENTS THAT ALLOW STEM EDUCATORS TO IDENTIFY PROMISING AND CREATIVE STUDENTS WHO MIGHT OTHERWISE NOT PERSIST IN STEM, WITH DOWNSTREAM IMPLICATIONS FOR BROADENING STEM GRADUATE TRAINING AND STEM WORKFORCE INCLUSION. THE PROJECT HAS THREE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES. IN AIM 1 THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL INVESTIGATE HOW CORE DIMENSIONS OF CREATIVE COGNITION (VISUAL, VERBAL, GENERATIVE, EVALUATIVE) RELATE TO FUTURE STEM SUCCESS IN A 3-YEAR LONGITUDINAL STUDY. USING TWO COHORTS OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS, ONE TRACKED DURING COLLEGE AND ONE TRACKED POST-COLLEGE, THEY WILL TEST VERBAL AND VISUAL MEASURES OF GENERATIVE AND EVALUATIVE CREATIVITY IN BOTH OF THESE COHORTS, INCLUDING STUDENTS? EVALUATION OF AI-GENERATED IDEAS. GENERATIVE CREATIVITY WILL BE SCORED BY HUMAN RATERS. EVALUATIVE CREATIVITY WILL BE SCORED RELATIVE TO HUMAN EXPERT-RATED CRITERIA. THESE SCORES WILL BE USED TO PREDICT BOTH COLLEGE AND POST-COLLEGE STEM SUCCESS AT A 3-YEAR LONGITUDINAL TIMEPOINT. IN AIM 2, RESEARCHERS WILL TEST COMPUTATIONAL CREATIVITY SCORING MODELS AND DETERMINE WHICH BEST PREDICTS HUMAN CREATIVITY RATINGS AS WELL AS WHICH OF THOSE COMPUTATIONAL MODELS BEST PREDICTS FUTURE COLLEGE AND POST-COLLEGE STEM SUCCESS, PARSING THE RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF VERBAL AND VISUAL CREATIVITY. THE HUMAN AND COMPUTATIONAL CREATIVITY SCORING APPROACHES WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED TO SEE WHETHER THEY SHOW LESS DISPARITY FOR UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS THAN DO TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC ASSESSMENTS. IN AIM 3, THE RESEARCHERS WILL TEST COMPUTATIONAL CREATIVITY SCORING APPROACHES TO PREDICT COLLEGE STEM SUCCESS, USING A LARGE-SCALE DATA SET OF COLLEGE APPLICANTS (N > 500,000) AS A TESTBED. THE DATASET WAS COMPILED ACROSS 24 DIVERSE U.S. UNIVERSITIES (INCLUDING PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS). THE STUDY WILL IDENTIFY METRICS THAT BEST PREDICT HUMAN RATINGS OF APPLICANTS? CREATIVITY AND USE THESE METRICS TO PREDICT STEM SUCCESS (E.G., STEM GRADE POINT AVERAGE, STEM DEGREE ATTAINMENT). THEY WILL LOOK TO SEE WHETHER DISPARITY ON RACE AND SES IS REDUCED RELATIVE TO SAT SCORES. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY THE EDU CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM. ECR SUPPORTS FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH THAT GENERATES FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE THAT ADVANCES THE RESEARCH LITERATURES IN STEM LEARNING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

THE RECENT EXPLOSION OF AVAILABLE DATA HAS FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGED THE WAY RESEARCHERS ACROSS DISCIPLINES APPROACH PROBLEMS. INDUSTRY IS EXPERIENCING A SIMILAR DISRUPTION AS DATA DRIVEN DECISION-MAKING IS DRIVING INNOVATION TOWARD NEW SKILLS AND ROLES IN DATA SCIENCE. WHILE ACADEMIC RESEARCHERS HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN THE CENTER OF INNOVATION AND RESEARCH, INDUSTRY IS POURING SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES INTO DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS TO MANY OF THESE SAME PROBLEMS. THE DATA INSTITUTE CONFERENCE WILL DRAW LEADERS FROM INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA TO EXPLORE THE LATEST THEORETICAL ADVANCES AND TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS IN DATA SCIENCE. THE CONFERENCE AIMS TO PROMOTE THE NEXT GENERATION OF CROSS-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND OFFERS EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO EARLY-CAREER DATA SCIENTISTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE CONFERENCE IS DESIGNED TO LAUNCH NEW RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AMONG ACADEMICS AND TO BUILD BRIDGES BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND ADVANCED RESEARCH GROUPS FROM BAY AREA INDUSTRY AND BEYOND. THIS CONFERENCE WILL MAKE AN EQUALLY IMPORTANT IMPACT TO THE GREATER SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY WITH A FOCUS ON RECRUITING AND INCREASING DIVERSITY IN DATA SCIENCE, WITH ATTENDEES WHO ARE NOT TRADITIONALLY REPRESENTED IN STEM FIELDS. THIS CONFERENCE WILL BRING TOGETHER BOTH JUNIOR AND SENIOR RESEARCHERS FROM INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA TO EXCHANGE IDEAS FROM RECENT ADVANCES TO DATA SCIENCE. THERE WILL BE SEVERAL INVITED AND CONTRIBUTED TALK TRACKS, INCLUDING ONE IN NETWORK ANALYSIS AT WHICH SPEAKERS WILL ADDRESS MANY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ON THE ESTIMATION OF GRAPHICAL MODELS, INFERENCE RELATED TO GRAPHS, AND APPLICATIONS OF NETWORKS TO NEUROSCIENCE. OTHER TRACKS INCLUDE PRACTICAL ISSUES AND ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTATION AND A/B TESTING; APPLICATIONS OF MACHINE LEARNING TO SPORTS ANALYTICS; AND PRECISION HEALTHCARE. THERE WILL ALSO BE TRACKS DEVOTED TO THE DISCUSSION OF THE SOCIETAL IMPACT OF DATA SCIENCE, INCLUDING TRACKS ON DATA PRIVACY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, THE APPLICATION OF DATA SCIENCE TO PUBLIC POLICY, AND A PANEL DISCUSSION ON DATA AND ALGORITHMIC ETHICS.
