"THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF TACOMA WILL DEVELOP AND PILOT PROGRAMS AND FABRICATE EXHIBITS FOR A SATELLITE LOCATION ON JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD. THE MUSEUM AND THE MILITARY BASE WILL COLLABORATE CLOSELY, ENGAGE ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND WORK WITH THE INTENDED AUDIENCE TO CREATE EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS TAILORED TO MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF MILITARY FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHOSE CHILDREN HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS. PROJECT ACTIVITIES ALSO WILL INCLUDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD THE KNOWLEDGE AND STRATEGIES NEEDED TO WORK WITH THE TARGET AUDIENCES. AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR WILL DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION PLAN AND RELATED TOOLS TO ENSURE EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS ARE MEETING ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS AS WELL AS AUDIENCE NEEDS. THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF TACOMA WILL EXPAND ITS TACOMA OUT OF SCHOOL TIME INTERMEDIARY PROGRAM TO PROVIDE OVER 54,000 ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS PIERCE COUNTY WITH ACADEMIC SUPPORT THROUGH EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES (ELOS). THE MUSEUM WILL HIRE 14 NEW STAFF, PARTNER WITH 73 SCHOOLS, AND CONTRACT WITH OVER 60 COMMUNITY ELO PROVIDERS TO OFFER STUDENTS SAFE, STRUCTURED, AND ENGAGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL DAY THAT COMPLEMENT WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING IN SCHOOL. THEY WILL SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ART, MUSIC, STEM, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, NUTRITION, AND DRUG AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAMMING. AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR WILL DEVELOP A MEASUREMENT FRAMEWORK AND ASSOCIATED TOOLS AT THE OUTSET OF THE PROJECT. ZOO ATLANTA WILL INVESTIGATE THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN GORILLAS, ORANGUTANS, CHIMPANZEES, AND BONOBOS USING THE INVESTIGATIVE TOOLS OF PATHOLOGY. THE WORK WILL ADVANCE THE RESEARCH COMPILED THROUGH THE IMLS-FUNDED GREAT APE HEART PROJECT BY UTILIZING THE PROJECT DATABASE AND NEW DIGITAL TOOLS TO COMPARE CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGIC DATA TO DETERMINE WHICH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS ARE MOST PREDICTIVE OF HEART DISEASE. THE RESEARCH TEAM, INCLUDING A PATHOLOGY-DEDICATED POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW AND VETERINARY STUDENTS, WILL ALSO ASSESS APES FOR HYPERTENSION AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS, AND INVESTIGATE POTENTIAL CAUSES FOR FATAL ANEURYSMS. THE PROJECT WILL ANSWER FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN APES, WHILE TRAINING A NEW GENERATION OF ZOO PROFESSIONALS. THE RESULTS WILL ENABLE THE NATION'S ZOOS TO BETTER PREVENT AND TREAT DISEASE AND ENHANCE STEWARDSHIP OF THESE ENDANGERED LIVING COLLECTIONS.

P2L+ MITIGATES THE IMPACTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC INCLUDING A DECREASE IN PANDEMIC INDUCED SOCIAL ISOLATION FOR CHILDREN AND CAREGIVERS AND AN INCREASE IN PARTICIPANTS' ABILITIES TO EXPRESS COMPLEX EMOTIONS RELATED TO THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC.
