BY LEVERAGING THE SCALE OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU) SYSTEM AND THE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (ARI), THIS FIVE-YEAR PROGRAM PROVIDES INTENSIVE MENTORING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO 418 STUDENT FELLOWS, INCLUDING 200 MASTER'S CANDIDATES, 180 UNDERGRADUATES, AND 38 COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER STUDENTS.A KEY STRENGTH OF THIS PROGRAM IS ITS RESOURCE EFFICIENCY. BY ALIGNING WITH THE ARI, THE PROJECT MATCHES STUDENT FELLOWS WITH FACULTY WHO ARE OFTEN ALREADY LEADING ARI-FUNDED RESEARCH. A TOTAL OF SCHOLARS PURSUING ASSOCIATE DEGREES FROM ALLAN HANCOCK COLLEGE AND CUESTA COLLEGE, AND BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING WILL RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS AVERAGING $13,000 FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS AT EACH INSTITUTION. SCHOLARS WILL RECEIVE FACULTY CO-MENTORING ACROSS INSTITUTIONS AND THE PROJECT WILL BUILD STRONG SCHOLAR COHORTS THROUGH CONNECTION AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOLARS INCLUDE STRENGTHS COACHING, INTERNSHIPS, AND STUDENT RESEARCH. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS TRACK 3 PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF ACADEMICALLY TALENTED, LOW-INCOME UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NATIONAL NEED TO GROW THE STEM WORKFORCE AND NURTURE KEY TALENT THAT WILL ENSURE ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS AND PROVIDE DOMESTIC LEADERSHIP ACROSS CRITICAL SECTORS. MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE DURING FEEDING AND INFANT SELF-REGULATION AND GROWTH - PROJECT SUMMARY THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE SELF-REGULATION SKILLS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD. DURING INFANCY, KEY INTERCONNECTED DOMAINS OF SELF-REGULATION INCLUDE EMOTION (I.E., DISTRESS REGULATION) AND FEEDING (I.E., CALORIC INTAKE REGULATION). AN IMPORTANT FOUNDATION FOR INFANTS’ DEVELOPING CAPACITIES FOR SELF-REGULATION IS CAREGIVERS’ SENSITIVE RESPONSIVENESS TO INFANT BEHAVIORAL CUES, ESPECIALLY DURING FEEDING. HOWEVER, GIVEN THE UBIQUITY OF PORTABLE TECHNOLOGIES (E.G., SMARTPHONES), IT IS LIKELY THAT MANY CAREGIVERS ARE DISTRACTED BY TECHNOLOGY WHILE FEEDING THEIR INFANTS, WHICH MAY LOWER SENSITIVE RESPONSIVENESS TO INFANT CUES. SURPRISINGLY FEW STUDIES HAVE EXAMINED POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL DISTRACTORS ON THE QUALITY AND OUTCOME OF EARLY FEEDING INTERACTIONS. THE PRIMARY AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO EXAMINE IMPACTS OF MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE ON EARLY FEEDING INTERACTIONS AND CHANGE IN THESE IMPACTS ACROSS EARLY INFANCY. WE ALSO AIM TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT GREATER HABITUAL MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE WILL PREDICT POORER INFANT EMOTION AND INTAKE REGULATION WHEN INFANTS ARE 6 AND 12 MONTHS OF AGE, GREATER SOCIOEMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS AT 12 MONTHS, AND GREATER INFANT WEIGHT GAIN BETWEEN BIRTH AND 12 MONTHS. IN ADDITION, WE AIM TO DESCRIBE LEVELS OF AND CHANGES IN HABITUAL MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE FROM THE PRENATAL AND EARLY POSTPARTUM PERIODS AND EXAMINE PREDICTORS OF HABITUAL TECHNOLOGY USE PATTERNS. WE PROPOSE A 15-MONTH LONGITUDINAL STUDY WITH NESTED WITHIN-SUBJECT EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES AND BURSTS OF DAILY PASSIVE SENSING OF DEVICE USE AND TIME DIARIES. PREGNANT WOMEN WILL BE RECRUITED AND ASSESSED DURING THEIR 3RD TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY, THEN MOTHER-INFANT DYADS WILL BE ASSESSED WHEN INFANTS ARE 2WK, 4MO, 6MO, 9MO, AND 12MO OF AGE. AT 2WK AND 4MO, MOTHERS AND INFANTS WILL BE OBSERVED FEEDING UNDER 3 COUNTERBALANCED WITHIN-SUBJECT EXPERIMENTAL FEEDING CONDITIONS: 1) CONTROL, 2) TV USE, 3) MOBILE DEVICE USE. VIDEOS OF THESE FEEDING INTERACTIONS WILL BE CODED TO OBTAIN A COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE ON MATERNAL ATTENTION, SENSITIVITY TO INFANT CUES, AND ENGAGEMENT OF THE INFANT, AND ON INFANT CLARITY OF CUES, ATTENTIONAL RESPONSIVENESS TO THE MOTHER, AND INTAKE. INFANT EMOTION AND INTAKE REGULATION, AND RELATED SOCIOEMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS, WILL BE ASSESSED VIA A COMBINATION OF ESTABLISHED BEHAVIORAL PROTOCOLS AND VALIDATED QUESTIONNAIRES. TO DESCRIBE PATTERNS OF HABITUAL MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE, WE WILL INTEGRATE PASSIVE SENSING (VIA AN APP) OF MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE WITH TIME DIARIES; HYPOTHESIZED PREDICTORS INCLUDE MATERNAL DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS, STRESS, EMOTION REGULATION, FEEDING STYLES, AND REFLECTIVE FUNCTIONING, AND INFANT EATING BEHAVIORS AND TEMPERAMENT. IN SUM, THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS AN INNOVATIVE, MULTI-LEVEL EXAMINATION OF POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF MATERNAL TECHNOLOGY USE ON THE QUALITY AND OUTCOME OF DYADIC INTERACTIONS DURING FEEDING. FINDINGS FROM THIS STUDY WILL PROVIDE A FOUNDATION FOR FURTHER RESEARCH AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING HOW TO BALANCE POTENTIAL BENEFITS VS. DRAWBACKS OF TECHNOLOGY USE WITHIN FAMILY CONTEXTS.

IT INTENDS TO DO SO THROUGH A COLLABORATIVE, CROSS-SECTOR PARTNERSHIP MODEL THAT WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS AND FACULTY WITH YEAR-ROUND, EXTRA-CURRICULAR, STEM-RELATED EXPERIENCES. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THESE EXPERIENCES WILL HELP INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO ARE RETAINED IN AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE STEM DEGREES AT HSI INSTITUTIONS. ONE OF THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS PROGRAM IS THAT FACULTY WILL BE EMBEDDED WITH STUDENTS DURING THE EXTRACURRICULAR EXPERIENCES. AS A RESULT, FACULTY WILL CONNECT WITH PROFESSIONALS WORKING AT THE FOREFRONT OF THEIR DISCIPLINES AND BE ABLE TO USE THEIR EXPERIENCES TO IMPROVE THEIR TEACHING. THE PROGRAM IS ALSO EXPECTED TO HELP INCREASE THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATIONS. THE PROJECT TEAM HAS ALREADY CREATED PARTNERSHIPS WITH CORPORATE, NON-PROFIT, AND GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS. THE PRIMARY PARTNERS ARE PACKET, MILLERCOORS BREWING, CSU FULLERTON, GRAVITATIONAL WAVES PHYSICS & ASTRONOMY, CITY OF HOPE, THE EXPLAINABLES, THE RIGHT QUESTION INSTITUTE, AND THE BLUE MARBLE SPACE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE. THESE ORGANIZATIONS WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH EXPERIENCES THAT RANGE FROM WORKSHOPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS TO CODING BOOT CAMPS AND SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS. THE PROJECT INTENDS TO SERVE 300 STUDENTS, WHO WILL PARTICIPATE IN ONE OF THREE THEMED COHORTS: 1. GEOSCIENCES; 2. ENGINEERING, PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS & COMPUTER SCIENCES; AND 3. BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY. IT IS EXPECTED THAT PARTICIPATION IN THE COHORT WILL BROADEN STUDENTS? UNDERSTANDING OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, INTRODUCE THEM TO SUBFIELDS WITHIN THEIR DISCIPLINES, AND PROVIDE INTERNSHIPS OR RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES, WHILE BUILDING DURABLE NETWORKS WITH PEERS AND PROFESSIONALS. THE RESEARCH AND EVALUATION COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE LITERATURE REGARDING SCIENCE IDENTITY. IUSE/PFE:RED INNOVATION: BREAKING THE BINARY -THIS REVOLUTIONARY PROJECT WILL INVOLVE BOTH STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN A PROCESS OF TRANSFORMING THE COMPUTER ENGINEERING (CPE) DEPARTMENT AT CAL POLY, SAN LUIS OBISPO, AND POTENTIALLY ENGINEERING EDUCATION AS A WHOLE, THROUGH REJECTING BINARIES OR DUALISMS COMMONLY USED TO CREATE HIERARCHIES IN ENGINEERING THOUGHT AND PRACTICE. THE ACTIVITIES IN THIS PROJECT WILL ASK FACULTY AND STUDENTS TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN DISMANTLING THE BINARIES BY IDENTIFYING AND BREAKING DOWN OPPRESSIVE NORMS. INSTEAD, THEY WILL EMBRACE A COMPLEX COEXISTENCE; DEVELOP NEW SKILLS IN CO-CREATION OF HOLISTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND INCLUSIVE CULTURES; AND EVOLVE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL IDENTITIES THAT ARE CONSTANTLY CHALLENGED AND OFTEN IN FLUX. THE WORK IS BASED ON A ?CRITICAL COLLABORATIVE EDUCATIONAL CHANGE? MODEL WHICH MAPS INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP CHANGE TO CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS, VALUES AND BELIEFS, ACTIONS, AND COLLECTIVE WELL-BEING IN ORDER TO BREAK THE BINARIES IN OUR CULTURE, POLICIES, AND CURRICULUM. ACTIVITIES IN THE PROJECT INCLUDE WORKSHOPS AND CRITICAL DIALOGS WHICH WILL INFORM CURRICULUM AND COURSE REDESIGN, CRITICAL MENTORING WITH FACULTY AND STUDENTS, AND FINDING AND CHANGING DEPARTMENT POLICIES AND PRACTICES BY WORKING WITH A STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD. THE RESEARCH WILL INFORM THE ENGINEERING EDUCATION COMMUNITY ABOUT THE NEED AND PATH TO SIGNIFICANT TRANSFORMATION. THE THREE BROAD GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO 1) ENHANCE CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND EXPAND GROUP CAPACITY THROUGH WORKSHOPS AND CRITICAL GROUPS DIALOGS, 2) INTERRUPT STRUCTURES THAT INHIBIT ACTION BY DEEPENING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AND AMONG STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FACULTY, AND 3) DISMANTLE AND REIMAGINE THE DEPARTMENT BY IDENTIFYING AND UNDERSTANDING STRUCTURES OF OPPRESSION IMPACTING THE INDIVIDUALS IN THE DEPARTMENT. THE PROPOSED PLAN OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESEARCH HOW FACULTY AND STUDENTS ENGAGE IN THE DISMANTLING OF OPPRESSIVE ENGINEERING LEARNING STRUCTURES. THE WORK WILL DRAW ATTENTION TO THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DEPARTMENTAL CULTURE AND INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE WELL-BEING. HEALTHY HEARTS/ CORAZONES SALUDABLES: PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH IN HISPANIC AND NON-HISPANIC MOTHERS AND CHILDREN IN US HOME VISITING PROGRAMS - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE (CVD) IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN US WOMEN, ACCOUNTING FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE OF EVERY THREE FEMALE DEATHS. OBESITY IS ARGUABLY THE STRONGEST MODIFIABLE TARGET FOR INTERVENTIONS TO PREVENT CVD AND IS LINKED WITH NEARLY EVERY OTHER MAJOR CVD RISK FACTOR, INCLUDING HYPERTENSION, ELEVATED GLUCOSE, HIGH CHOLESTEROL, POOR DIET, AND PHYSICAL INACTIVITY. INFANTS OF MOTHERS WITH OBESITY ARE ALSO AT INCREASED RISK FOR FUTURE OBESITY AND CVD. OUR TEAM HAS DEVELOPED AN EMPIRICALLY VALIDATED LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION THAT IS REMOTELY DELIVERED AND HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING BODY WEIGHT AND IMPROVING CVH IN HISPANIC AND NON-HISPANIC WOMEN AND CHILDREN DURING PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM. IT IS NOW CRITICAL TO STUDY WAYS TO DISSEMINATE THIS EMPIRICALLY-VALIDATED PROGRAM. EVIDENCE BASED HOME VISITING PROGRAMS (EBHV), WHICH SUPPORT FAMILIES FROM THE PRENATAL PERIOD THROUGH INFANCY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD, ARE AN IDEAL SETTING TO PROMOTE CVH, HOWEVER THESE PROGRAMS WERE NOT DESIGNED WITH AN EXPLICIT FOCUS ON THE PREVENTION OF OBESITY AND OTHER CVD RISK FACTORS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PRE- AND POSTNATAL LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION AS AN ENHANCEMENT TO EBHV TO PROMOTE MATERNAL AND CHILD CVH. DURING AN INITIAL 2-YEAR UG3 PHASE, WE WILL: 1) MODIFY OUR PRE- AND POSTNATAL INTERVENTION TO FOCUS ON CVH WITHIN EBHV; 2) WORK WITH OUR EBHV PARTNERS TO INTEGRATE CVH MESSAGES AND DEVELOP THEIR RELATED SKILLS; 3) STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND EBHV TO INCREASE REFERRALS, RETENTION, AND IMPROVE CVH, AND 4) CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH-IMPACT STUDY DESIGN FOR THE SUBSEQUENT UH3 PHASE INVOLVING A MULTI-COHORT PROTOCOL, HARMONIZED INTERVENTIONS, MEASURES AND RESOURCES. FOR THE SUBSEQUENT UH3 PHASE, WE PROPOSE A HYBRID TYPE 1 EFFECTIVENESS-IMPLEMENTATION TRIAL IN WHICH WE RECRUIT 550 PERINATAL WOMEN WHO WILL BE RANDOMIZED TO RECEIVE EBHV ALONE OR EBHV ENHANCED WITH OUR LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION TO PROMOTE CVH. OUR PRIMARY HYPOTHESIS IS THAT, OVER AN AVERAGE OF 36 MONTHS, EBHV+CVH (VS. EBHV ALONE) WILL RESULT IN MORE FAVORABLE MATERNAL AND CHILD LEVELS OF THE LIFE’S SIMPLE 7 INDICATORS. WE WILL ALSO EXAMINE KEY INTERVENTION MODERATORS, FOCUSING ON SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, AND MEDIATORS, INCLUDING CHANGES IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL SUPPORT, CVH BEHAVIORS, AND PROGRAM ADHERENCE. USING THE RE-AIM FRAMEWORK, WE WILL DETERMINE REACH, EFFECTIVENESS, ADOPTION, IMPLEMENTATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF EBHV+CVH VS. EBHV ALONE. OTHER GOALS ARE TO EMPOWER AND REDUCE BURNOUT AMONG HOME VISITORS; DEVELOP SKILLS OF EARLY-STAGE INVESTIGATORS, AND PROPOSE INNOVATIVE ANCILLARY STUDIES TO ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS. THUS THERE IS NEED TO MONITOR NESTS AND HUMAN ACTIVITIES NEAR THE NESTS SO AS TO INFORM PROGRAMS THAT CAN MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE ANTHROPOGENIC DISTURBANCE AND PROTECT VULNERABLE SEABIRD COLONIES ALONG THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST.

INTEGRATION OF RESEARCH, MENTORING AND PROFESSIONAL SKILL BUILDING FOR MASTER'S STUDENTS TO BRIDGE TO A PHD PROGRAM IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE - CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONA (CPP), THE LEAD INSTITUTION FOR THIS GRANT, IS PARTNERING WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE (UCR), THE RO1 INSTITUTION, IN A BRIDGES MASTER’S OF SCIENCE (MS) TO THE DOCTORATE PROGRAM (2021-2025). THE OVERALL PROGRAM GOAL IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MS STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY (URM) RACIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS, LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS AND THOSE WITH DISABILITIES SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONING TO PHD PROGRAMS IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH. THERE WILL BE 4 COHORTS OF 6 MS STUDENTS PER YEAR (24 STUDENTS TOTAL). EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE A CPP FACULTY RESEARCH MENTOR (FRM), A UCR FRM, A CPP FACULTY ADVISOR (FA) AND A UCR FA. BRIDGES STUDENTS WILL HAVE 2 YEARS TO COMPLETE THEIR MS RESEARCH PROJECT AT CPP, PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH-RELATED SKILLS AT BOTH INSTITUTIONS, TAKE A UCR COURSE AND CONDUCT A 10-WEEK SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP AT UCR. THE GRANT OBJECTIVES WILL BE: A) STUDENTS COMPLETE MS PROGRAMS, ARE ACCEPTED AND MAKE A SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION TO A PHD PROGRAM; B) STUDENTS INCREASE RESEARCH KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED TO BECOME BIOMEDICAL INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS; C) STUDENTS INCREASE CONFIDENCE IN PREPAREDNESS FOR PHD PROGRAMS; D) STUDENTS DEEPEN AWARENESS OF BIOMEDICAL CAREERS; E) CPP-UCR PARTNERSHIP CREATES AN INTEGRATED SUPPORT SYSTEM, FACULTY DEVELOPMENT, AND NETWORKING FOR STUDENTS TO SUCCEED IN PHD PROGRAMS. SHORT TERM OUTCOMES WILL BE: 1) COMPLETION OF DOCTORAL PROGRAM WITHIN 5 YEARS; 2) PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION OF THEIR RESEARCH; 3) CPP EXPANDS STEM RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS WITH UCR, OTHER RO1 INSTITUTIONS AND STEM INDUSTRIES; 4) INCREASE CPP AND UCR SUPPORT OF URM STUDENTS THROUGH RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES, AND POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS. LONG TERM OUTCOMES WILL BE: 1) BRIDGES SUPPORT SYSTEM IS INTEGRATED AND SUSTAINED AT CPP AND UCR; 2) STEM CAREERS ARE SUPPORTED BY STUDENTS’ FAMILIES; 3) GAPS CLOSED IN PREPARATION AND PROFESSIONAL REPRESENTATION OF DIVERSE GROUPS IN STEM RESEARCH; 4) BARRIERS OF DIFFERENCE REMOVED TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE STEM COMMUNITY. EACH STUDENT WILL BE MATCHED AND INTEGRATED INTO CPP FRM AND UCR FRM LABS, PRESENT RESEARCH FINDINGS, ATTEND SEMINARS, JOURNAL CLUBS, WORKSHOPS AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES AT BOTH INSTITUTIONS. TO ENHANCE FACULTY MENTORING, THE CPP AND UCR FACULTY WILL PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS AND, SINCE MOST FACULTY HAVE LIMITED INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE WHILE A MAJORITY OF THE NEW PHDS ENTER INDUSTRIAL POSITIONS, FACULTY WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO DO A 4-6 WEEK RESIDENCY IN INDUSTRY. IN ADDITION TO STUDENT PANEL DISCUSSIONS, BRIDGES STUDENTS WILL BE PAIRED WITH CPP MS ALUMNI OR UCR PHD PREDOCTORAL CANDIDATES TO PROVIDE NEAR-PEER MENTORING. LEVERAGING THESE ACTIVITIES WILL BUILD STUDENT CONFIDENCE, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, SCIENTIFIC ETHICAL BEHAVIOR, STEM NETWORKING AND AWARENESS OF FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. SENSE OF COMMUNITY WILL EXPAND FURTHER BY INVITING STUDENTS’ FAMILIES TO PROGRAM SOCIALS AT THE BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND END OF THE PROGRAM TO ENGAGE FAMILY. BY NURTURING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONGST THE BRIDGES STUDENTS, THEIR MENTORS, AND THEIR FAMILIES, THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE A STRONG SUPPORT NETWORK TO HELP THEM COMPLETE A PHD AND HAVE A SUCCESSFUL STEM CAREER.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING THROUGH AN ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRY NETWORK -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONA (CAL POLY POMONA OR CPP). CAL POLY POMONA IS ONE OF THE 23 CAMPUSES WITHIN THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU) SYSTEM AND AN HSI DESIGNATED INSTITUTION WITH 50% OF THE STUDENT BODY IDENTIFYING AS HISPANIC, WHERE 54% MEET THE CATEGORY OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES (URM), 62% ARE FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS, AND 45% ARE PELL GRANT RECIPIENTS. OVER ITS 5-YEAR DURATION, THIS PROJECT WILL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS TO 45 UNIQUE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO ARE PURSUING A BACHELOR?S DEGREE IN CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT (CEM) AND TO 75 UNIQUE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO WILL PARTICIPATE IN A PRE-ARRANGED SUMMER INTERNSHIP. FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE UP TO FOUR YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT AND TRANSFER STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE UP TO TWO YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIPS. THE PROJECT AIMS TO INCREASE STUDENT PERSISTENCE IN THE CEM DISCIPLINE BY INCREASING RETENTION, STUDENT SUCCESS, AND GRADUATION RATES OF THE HISPANIC AND URM STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL IMPLEMENT EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE IMPACT OF ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE THROUGH A SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY DURING ACADEMIC SEMESTERS AS A RESEARCH ASSISTANT AND WILL OFFER SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK AS AN INTERN AT A CONSTRUCTION FIRM, WHICH IS INTENDED TO ENHANCE THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC ABILITY AND TALENT. BECAUSE CAL POLY POMONA HAS A HIGH POPULATION OF URM AND HISPANIC STUDENTS, THIS PROJECT HAS POTENTIAL TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN THE STEM FIELDS AND FOR FACULTY TO LEARN HOW MENTORING AND INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF A STUDENT POPULATION. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE COMPLETION OF STEM DEGREES, I.E., B.S. IN CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT, BY LOW-INCOME, HIGH-ACHIEVING UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THERE ARE THREE SPECIFIC AIMS THAT GUIDE THE PROJECT. FIRST IS A FOCUS ON RECRUITING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS INFORMATION SESSIONS, GUEST LECTURES, OR AMBASSADOR PROGRAMS TO BROADEN THE NUMBER OF CEM STUDENTS. SECOND IS TO ADDRESS THE EQUITY GAP ISSUE IN THE INDUSTRY AND PROVIDE FINANCIAL RESOURCES. THIRD IS TO IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE, EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT ENHANCE STUDENT SUCCESS, ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS, AND GRADUATION. ALTHOUGH THE DISPARITY IN URM REPRESENTATION HAS SHOWN SOME IMPROVEMENT OVER THE YEARS, IT REMAINS SIGNIFICANTLY AND CONTINUOUSLY LOW. THIS NECESSITATES AN EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTION EFFORT TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN MORE URMS, WORKING TOWARDS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN URM REPRESENTATION AND A MORE QUALIFIED WORKFORCE READY TO RESPOND TO THE INDUSTRY?S INCREASING DEMANDS. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE CHALLENGES OF THE CURRENT CEM STUDENTS AT CPP (URM, FEMALE, FIRST-GENERATION, AND LOW-INCOME COLLEGE STUDENTS), AND IMPLEMENT RECRUITING AND RETENTION ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT GRADUATES PURSUING SUCCESSFUL CAREERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. THE PROJECT WILL BE ASSESSED USING BOTH FORMATIVE (PROCESS) AND SUMMATIVE (OUTCOME) EVALUATION. RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE AT THE CALIFORNIA ENGINEERING LIAISON COUNCIL (CAELC) MEETINGS AND IN CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF?S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME, ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. IT ALSO AIMS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE STEM WORKERS AND TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, TRANSFER, GRADUATION, AND ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. HEALTHY HEARTS/?CORAZONES SALUDABLES: PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH IN HISPANIC AND NON-HISPANIC MOTHERS AND CHILDREN IN US HOME VISITING PROGRAMS - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE (CVD) IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN US WOMEN, ACCOUNTING FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE OF EVERY THREE FEMALE DEATHS. OBESITY IS ARGUABLY THE STRONGEST MODIFIABLE TARGET FOR INTERVENTIONS TO PREVENT CVD AND IS LINKED WITH NEARLY EVERY OTHER MAJOR CVD RISK FACTOR, INCLUDING HYPERTENSION, ELEVATED GLUCOSE, HIGH CHOLESTEROL, POOR DIET, AND PHYSICAL INACTIVITY. INFANTS OF MOTHERS WITH OBESITY ARE ALSO AT INCREASED RISK FOR FUTURE OBESITY AND CVD. OUR TEAM HAS DEVELOPED AN EMPIRICALLY VALIDATED LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION THAT IS REMOTELY DELIVERED AND HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING BODY WEIGHT AND IMPROVING CVH IN HISPANIC AND NON-HISPANIC WOMEN AND CHILDREN DURING PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM. IT IS NOW CRITICAL TO STUDY WAYS TO DISSEMINATE THIS EMPIRICALLY-VALIDATED PROGRAM. EVIDENCE BASED HOME VISITING PROGRAMS (EBHV), WHICH SUPPORT FAMILIES FROM THE PRENATAL PERIOD THROUGH INFANCY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD, ARE AN IDEAL SETTING TO PROMOTE CVH, HOWEVER THESE PROGRAMS WERE NOT DESIGNED WITH AN EXPLICIT FOCUS ON THE PREVENTION OF OBESITY AND OTHER CVD RISK FACTORS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PRE- AND POSTNATAL LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION AS AN ENHANCEMENT TO EBHV TO PROMOTE MATERNAL AND CHILD CVH. DURING AN INITIAL 2-YEAR UG3 PHASE, WE WILL: 1) MODIFY OUR PRE- AND POSTNATAL INTERVENTION TO FOCUS ON CVH WITHIN EBHV; 2) WORK WITH OUR EBHV PARTNERS TO INTEGRATE CVH MESSAGES AND DEVELOP THEIR RELATED SKILLS; 3) STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND EBHV TO INCREASE REFERRALS, RETENTION, AND IMPROVE CVH, AND 4) CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH-IMPACT STUDY DESIGN FOR THE SUBSEQUENT UH3 PHASE INVOLVING A MULTI-COHORT PROTOCOL, HARMONIZED INTERVENTIONS, MEASURES AND RESOURCES. FOR THE SUBSEQUENT UH3 PHASE, WE PROPOSE A HYBRID TYPE 1 EFFECTIVENESS-IMPLEMENTATION TRIAL IN WHICH WE RECRUIT 550 PERINATAL WOMEN WHO WILL BE RANDOMIZED TO RECEIVE EBHV ALONE OR EBHV ENHANCED WITH OUR LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION TO PROMOTE CVH. OUR PRIMARY HYPOTHESIS IS THAT, OVER AN AVERAGE OF 36 MONTHS, EBHV+CVH (VS. EBHV ALONE) WILL RESULT IN MORE FAVORABLE MATERNAL AND CHILD LEVELS OF THE LIFE’S SIMPLE 7 INDICATORS. WE WILL ALSO EXAMINE KEY INTERVENTION MODERATORS, FOCUSING ON SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, AND MEDIATORS, INCLUDING CHANGES IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL SUPPORT, CVH BEHAVIORS, AND PROGRAM ADHERENCE. USING THE RE-AIM FRAMEWORK, WE WILL DETERMINE REACH, EFFECTIVENESS, ADOPTION, IMPLEMENTATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF EBHV+CVH VS. EBHV ALONE. OTHER GOALS ARE TO EMPOWER AND REDUCE BURNOUT AMONG HOME VISITORS; DEVELOP SKILLS OF EARLY-STAGE INVESTIGATORS, AND PROPOSE INNOVATIVE ANCILLARY STUDIES TO ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS. INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED, STRUCTURED TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE CRITICAL FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS GIVEN EVIDENCE OF THEIR LOWER RETENTION AND SENSE OF BELONGING IN SCIENCE PROGRAMS, AND THE PERCEIVED DISCONNECT OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FROM THEIR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND VALUES. U-RISE AT CAL POLY WILL BUILD ON AN EXISTING, INCLUSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE TO ESTABLISH A NOVEL, EVIDENCE-BASED TRAINING PROGRAM WHERE STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS ENGAGE IN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES, DEVELOP THEIR IDENTITIES AS SCIENTISTS, AND LEAVE INSPIRED AND WELL PREPARED FOR SUCCESS IN GRADUATE SCHOOL IN THE BIOMEDICAL FIELD. U-RISE AT CAL POLY CONSISTS OF FOUR KEY COMPONENTS OVER A 2-YEAR TRAINING PROGRAM: 1) MENTORING TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING; 2) ROBUST MENTORED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE; 3) FORMAL COURSEWORK TO BUILD CAPACITY AND SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT AS A SCIENTIST AND 4) PROGRAMMATIC ENRICHMENT EVENTS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM (E.G., RESEARCH SEMINARS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, TEAM BUILDING). THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF U-RISE AT CAL POLY IS TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE, MENTORED, TWO-YEAR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM THAT WILL SERVE AS A PATHWAY FOR UR STUDENTS TO COMPLETE A BIOMEDICAL, RESEARCH-FOCUSED GRADUATE DEGREE. ADDITIONAL OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED INCLUDE (1) IMPROVEMENTS IN A) CONCEPTUAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS NEEDED TO CONDUCT AND DISSEMINATE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH IN AN ETHICALLY RESPONSIBLE AND RIGOROUS MANNER, B) KNOWLEDGE OF BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CAREERS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS TO PURSUE BIOMEDICAL GRADUATE EDUCATION, AND C) SCIENCE IDENTITY, SELF-EFFICACY, AND BELONGING IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH; AND (2) ENHANCE PROMOTION OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSIVITY IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AT CAL POLY IN TERMS OF BOTH FACULTY ENGAGEMENT AND STUDENTS PERCEPTIONS.

PROJECT GOALS, OBJECTIVES, MILESTONES, AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO 40 TRAINEES AND THEIR RESPECTIVE EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING SITES ALONG WITH DEVELOPMENT, DELIVERY, AND EVALUATION OF ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK, EXTERNAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, AND IN-SERVICE TRAINING RELATED TO TEAM-BASED CARE IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, YOUNG ADULTS, AND THEIR FAMILIES IN RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES OF FAR NORTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA. CONTINUATION OF THIS PROGRAM WILL ALLOW FOR STRENGTHENED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKFORCE OPPORTUNITIES IN UNDERSERVED MEDICAL COMMUNITIES AND HEALTH PROFESSION SHORTAGE AREAS WITH ONE OF THE LARGEST POPULATIONS OF NATIVE AMERICANS IN RURAL CALIFORNIA. ALL TRAINEES WILL BE EXPECTED TO SEEK EMPLOYMENT IN RURAL AND TRIBAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SETTINGS UPON GRADUATION. CAL POLY HUMBOLDT’S PROGRAM HAS DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO TRAIN PSYCHOLOGY, PSYCHIATRY, AND SOCIAL WORK PROFESSIONALS TO WORK IN INTEGRATED CARE SETTINGS AND HAS DOCUMENTED AN AVERAGE INCREASE IN THE CENTER FOR INTEGRATED HEALTH SOLUTIONS’ “SIX LEVELS OF COLLABORATION/INTEGRATION” OF 50%, FROM APPROXIMATELY 3.0 TO 4.5. IN ADDITION TO THIS REQUESTED FUNDING PRIORITY, THE PROGRAM MEETS FUNDING PREFERENCE QUALIFICATION 1 BY PLACING 100% OF PROGRAM GRADUATES IN MEDICALLY UNSERVED COMMUNITIES. THE PROGRAM FOR WHICH CONTINUATION IS REQUESTED HAS DEMONSTRATED A 275% INCREASE IN NEW AND EXPANDED COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING SITES IN HIGH-NEED AND HIGH-DEMAND AREAS FROM 2021-2024. CAL POLY HUMBOLDT’S MSW PROGRAM WAS BUILT GROUND-UP BY AND FOR THE RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. WE KNOW, AS NATIONAL RESEARCH DEMONSTRATES, THAT THE BEST WAY TO STRENGTHEN THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKFORCE IN RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IS TO “GROW YOUR OWN.” THESE ARE THE FOLKS MOST LIKELY TO STICK AROUND. OUR PROGRAM HAS HAD GREAT SUCCESS WITH THIS MODEL. CONTINUATION OF THE RURAL AND TRIBAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKFORCE EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM WILL PRODUCE MEASURABLE RESULTS AND ENDURING OUTCOMES.

CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS IN CORE UNDERGRADUATE CIVIL ENGINEERING COURSES -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT, AND EVALUATE A NEW APPROACH DESIGNED TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES IN EARLY ENGINEERING COURSES AT CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY AT POMONA (CPP) AND MT. SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE (MT. SAC). APPROXIMATELY ONE THIRD OF STUDENTS AT THE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS DO NOT PASS TWO OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FOUNDATIONAL ENGINEERING COURSES: ENGINEERING STATICS AND MECHANICS OF MATERIALS. FURTHERMORE, STUDENTS FROM GROUPS THAT HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN UNDERREPRESENTED IN ENGINEERING COMPLETE THESE COURSES AT A RATE APPROXIMATELY 10% LOWER THAN THEIR PEERS. POOR OUTCOMES IN THESE KEY COURSES CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASED DROPOUT RATES, DELAYED GRADUATION, AND LOWER SUCCESS RATES IN SUBSEQUENT COURSES. THIS PROJECT WILL IMPROVE STUDENTS? SUCCESS IN ENGINEERING STATICS, MECHANICS OF MATERIALS, AND SUBSEQUENT COURSES THROUGH FOUR EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIVITIES: 1) A SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM (SBP) TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE GATEKEEPER COURSES; 2) PEER TUTORING; 3) UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR 24 STUDENTS; AND 4) PARTICIPATION IN THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS' EXCELLENCE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (EXCEED) TEACHING WORKSHOP FOR 17 FACULTY. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE STUDENTS? ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN THE TWO FOCAL COURSES, REDUCE AVERAGE TIME-TO-DEGREE, AND PROMOTE CONSISTENT, HIGH-QUALITY INSTRUCTION ACROSS COURSE SECTIONS. THIS WILL DRIVE STUDENT SUCCESS AND CREATE A PATHWAY FOR A MORE DIVERSE AND CAPABLE STEM WORKFORCE. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE MEASURED THROUGH MIXED-METHODS RESEARCH GUIDED BY TWO THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS: THE HOW PEOPLE LEARN MODEL AND THE INTERSECTIONALITY FRAMEWORK. THE RESULTS WILL DRIVE POSITIVE STUDENT OUTCOMES BY PURSUING FOUR OBJECTIVES. FIRST IS TO INFORM THE ENGINEERING EDUCATION FIELD ABOUT BEST PRACTICES FOR IMPROVING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND REDUCING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS IN ENGINEERING STATICS AND MECHANICS OF MATERIALS. MAJOR DATA SOURCES INCLUDE PERFORMANCE ON ASSESSMENTS COVERING KEY TOPICS IN THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM AND FOCAL COURSES, VALIDATED SURVEY INSTRUMENTS MEASURING SPATIAL REASONING AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, AND DATA ON FACULTY PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES TAKEN BEFORE AND AFTER THE EXCEED TEACHING WORKSHOP. BRIDGING INSTITUTIONS TO DECREASE GAPS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION (TRACK 2) PROJECT WILL DECREASE THE GAPS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS AND INCREASE THEIR SUCCESS BY FOCUSING ON A ?TRANSFER-READY? CURRICULUM WITH SUPPORT FROM A FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITY. THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, WHICH HAS THE LARGEST FOUR-YEAR PUBLIC UNIVERSITY SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES, DOES NOT HAVE AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE FOR TRANSFER (ADT) IN ENGINEERING. THEREFORE, THE MAJORITY OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS WHO TRANSFER FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES DO NOT TAKE LOWER-DIVISION ENGINEERING COURSES. THIS PROLONGS THE TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE AN ENGINEERING DEGREE TO AN AVERAGE OF FIVE-TO-SIX YEARS. AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY AT POMONA (CPP), THE TWO-YEAR GRADUATION RATE FOR ENGINEERING TRANSFER STUDENTS IN THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER WAS 6.0%, WHICH IS MUCH LOWER THAN THE UNIVERSITY AVERAGE (33.1%). THE ADDITIONAL YEARS NEEDED TO GRADUATE ADD TO THE FINANCIAL BURDEN FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS, AS THEY MUST PAY ADDITIONAL TUITION AND EXPENSES. THE BRIDGING INSTITUTIONS TO DECREASE GAPS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION TEAM (OR BRIDGE EDUCATION TEAM) INCLUDES FACULTY AT CPP AND THREE PARTNERING INSTITUTIONS, MT. SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE (MT. SAC), CITRUS COLLEGE, AND VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE WHO WILL COLLABORATE ON TRANSFER STUDENT SUCCESS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT CPP. BECAUSE TRANSFER STUDENTS CONSTITUTE A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ENTERING ENGINEERING PROGRAMS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOSTER THEIR SUCCESS IN OBTAINING BACCALAUREATE DEGREES IN A TIMELY MANNER, WHICH WILL PROVE A SIGNIFICANT STEP IN MITIGATING EQUITY GAPS AMONG ENGINEERING STUDENTS. THREE SPECIFIC AIMS GUIDE THE EXECUTION OF THE PROJECT. FIRST IS TO IDENTIFY THE CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS (CSFS) THAT IMPACT TRANSFER STUDENTS? SUCCESS. SECOND IS TO CREATE A FRAMEWORK TO YIELD ?TRANSFER READY? STUDENTS BY IMPLEMENTING THE TRANSFER PATHWAY PROGRAM. THIRD AND FINALLY, IS TO OFFER MORE DIVERSE LOWER-DIVISION ENGINEERING COURSES THROUGH COURSE DEVELOPMENT AND A FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITY (FLC). THE BRIDGE PROJECT WILL MINIMIZE TRANSFER STUDENTS? STRUGGLES AND MAXIMIZE THEIR PERFORMANCE AFTER TRANSFERRING. FACULTY AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT THE CSU WILL FORM TEAMS THAT WILL: WORK CLOSELY WITH RUBIN OBSERVATORY STAFF TO ACHIEVE DATA ACCESS; DEVELOP NEW SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATIONS WITH NOIRLAB SCIENTISTS; ENGAGE IN TECHNICAL TRAINING AND UNIQUE RESEARCH-INSTITUTE FOCUSED EXPERIENCES; AND BECOME EXPERT USERS OF THE RUBIN SCIENCE PLATFORM (RSP). THE PARTNERS WILL DEVELOP EXPERTISE AND FLUENCY IN THE RSP BY INVESTIGATING ASTROPHYSICS TOPICS PARTICULARLY SYNERGISTIC WITH THE LSST EXPERIMENTAL SETUP AND THE EXPERTISE AT EACH CSU HUB. AT AN EARLY SUMMER ?DATA SUMMIT? RUBIN SPECIALISTS WILL DELIVER TAILORED SUPPORT AND THE CSU TEAMS WILL BUILD COMMUNITY. EACH TEAM WILL DEVELOP THEIR OWN PROJECT AND PRODUCE THEIR OWN SCIENTIFIC RESULTS, BUT WILL WORK AS A COMMUNITY TO DEVELOP AND SHARE DATA ANALYSIS PIPELINES, AS AN ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP, AND IN REVISING DATA ANALYSIS NOTEBOOKS. THE SCIENTIFIC AREAS ADDRESSED AT THE FOUR CSU HUBS ARE: GALAXY/FILAMENT ALIGNMENTS IN LARGE SCALE STRUCTURES, X-RAY BINARY MONITORING AND DISCOVERY, GAMMA RAY BURST AFTERGLOW CHARACTERIZATION AND DETECTION, AND DISCOVERY OF LONG-PERIOD VARIABLE STARS IN NEARBY DWARF GALAXIES. THE IMPACT ON THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE WILL BE TRACKED BY AN EXTERNAL PROGRAM EVALUATOR. ELUCIDATING THE MOLECULAR MECHANISM OF DAPLE- FLT3 AND DAPLE-PDGFRB GENE FUSION IN BLOOD CANCERS - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT: RECEPTOR TYROSINE KINASES (RTKS) ARE A MAJOR CLASS OF CELL SIGNALING RECEPTORS AND THEY PLAY MAJOR ROLES IN CANCER PROGRESSION. IN LEUKEMIA, AND MANY CANCERS, ABERRANT ACTIVATION OF THE RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION PATHWAY IS OFTEN OBSERVED. VARIOUS RTK MUTATIONS, SUCH AS THOSE FOUND ON PDGFRB AND FLT3, ARE FOUND IN LEUKEMIA PATIENTS AND OFTEN LEAD TO HYPERACTIVATION OF THE KINASE DOMAIN. THIS ACTIVATION CAUSES THE SUBSEQUENT INCREASE IN THE RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK SIGNALING PATHWAY. BECAUSE THE CANCER IS DRIVEN BY KINASE DOMAIN ACTIVATION, MANY PATIENTS ARE RESPONSIVE TO TYROSINE KINASE INHIBITOR (TKI) TREATMENT SUCH AS IMATINIB AND SORAFENIB. HOWEVER, IN A SUBSET OF PATIENTS, THEY BECOME UNRESPONSIVE TO TKIS OVER TIME DUE TO A RESISTANCE IN THE CANCER CELLS. ONE MECHANISM BY WHICH CANCER CELLS CAN ACQUIRE RESISTANCE IS THROUGH GAINING A SECONDARY MUTATION IN THE KINASE DOMAIN THAT MAKES THE KINASE INSENSITIVE TO THE TKI. IN RESPONSE, PATIENTS ARE OFTEN GIVEN HIGHER DRUG DOSAGE OR AN APPROACH TO TARGET MULTIPLE PATHWAYS SIMULTANEOUSLY USING COMBINATION THERAPY IS TAKEN. THESE APPROACHES ARE OFTEN IMPRACTICAL DUE TO CUMULATIVE SIDE EFFECTS THAT MAY BE LIFE-THREATENING. THUS, FURTHER INSIGHTS INTO THE INNER WORKINGS OF CANCER CELLS AND MUTATIONS THAT LEAD TO AGGRESSIVE CANCER PHENOTYPES ARE ESSENTIAL TO IDENTIFYING NEW THERAPEUTIC TARGETS, ESPECIALLY, THOSE ON WHICH MULTIPLE CANCER-FUELING SIGNALING PATHWAYS MAY CONVERGE. DAPLE/CCDC88C IS SCAFFOLD PROTEIN THAT SERVES AS A CONVERGENCE POINT FOR THREE MAJOR SIGNALING PATHWAYS IN A CELL: WNTS, G-PROTEINS, AND RTKS. BECAUSE PROTEIN SCAFFOLDS CAN SERVE AS CENTRAL HUBS INTEGRATING CELLULAR SIGNALING, THIS RAISES THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPLOITING THESE PROTEINS FOR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION. SEVERAL GENE FUSION BETWEEN DAPLE AND PDGFRB OR FLT3 HAVE BEEN FOUND IN CASES OF MYELOPROLIFERATIVE DISORDERS AND LEUKEMIAS. THE EXACT MECHANISM BY WHICH THESE GENE FUSIONS LEAD TO CONSTITUTIVE ACTIVATION OF THE KINASE DOMAIN REMAINS TO BE TESTED AND WHETHER REGIONS ON DAPLE THAT IS INVOLVED IN THE GENE FUSION CAN BE LEVERAGED FOR THERAPY REMAINS A MYSTERY. FINALLY, BECAUSE THESE MUTATIONS ARE RARE, GENERATING AN IN VIVO MODEL FOR THERAPEUTIC TESTING IN MICE IS OFTEN SEEN AS UNPRACTICAL. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO ADDRESS THESE QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS. SPECIFICALLY, IT SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE DAPLE GENE FUSION AFFECTS HEMATOPOIETIC CELL EXPANSION USING CELL-BASED MODELS AND ZEBRAFISH. ALSO PLANNED IN THIS PROPOSAL IS TO EXPOSE HOW THE COILED-COIL DOMAIN OF THE DAPLE-PDGFRB OR DAPLE-FLT3 GENE FUSION AFFECTS PROTEIN SUBCELLULAR LOCALIZATION AND TO DETERMINE IF IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DIMERIZATION AND ACTIVATION OF THE KINASE DOMAIN IN CELLS. THE STRATEGY THAT WILL BE EMPLOYED TO TARGET THE DIMERIZATION POINT MAY ALSO SERVE AS A THERAPEUTIC STRATEGY. OVERALL, THESE STUDIES WILL GIVE NOVEL INSIGHTS INTO HOW DAPLE ASSOCIATED MUTATIONS AFFECT LEUKEMIA CELL SIGNALING AND GROWTH AND IT WILL ALSO ESTABLISH WHETHER TARGETING THIS PROTEIN SCAFFOLD CAN BE LEVERAGED FOR CANCER THERAPY.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST B.A. PROGRAM IN THE UNITED STATES OFFERED AT A LEVEL-FOUR, MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON (PELICAN BAY IS THE ONLY SUPER MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON IN CALIFORNIA). THROUGH B.A. DEGREE COMPLETION AND WRAP-AROUND CAREER PREPARATION, THE PROGRAM HELPS INCARCERATED STUDENTS ACHIEVE DESIRED EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES AND ACCESS CAREER PATHWAYS UPON RELEASE. THE PROGRAMS EMPHASIS IS ON RACIAL EQUITY (GOAL 1), ACHIEVED THROUGH SERVING INCARCERATED STUDENTS IN ONE OF THE MOST RACIALLY SEGREGATED INSTITUTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES. INTBIO: COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: PHENOTYPES OF THE ANTHROPOCENE: INTEGRATING THE CONSEQUENCES OF SENSORY STRESSORS ACROSS BIOLOGICAL SCALES -ANIMAL RESPONSES TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS ULTIMATELY INFLUENCE SURVIVAL AND REPRODUCTION, AND SOME ANIMALS ARE BETTER PREPARED TO FACE CHALLENGES THAN OTHERS. THIS RESEARCH EXAMINES PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL RESPONSES TO SENSORY POLLUTION CAUSED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES TO PREDICT POPULATION VULNERABILITY ACROSS DIFFERENT SPECIES. THE PROJECT WILL EXPLICITLY LINK THE EFFECTS OF LIGHT AND NOISE POLLUTION ON AVIAN PHYSIOLOGY, BEHAVIOR, AND REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS IN A LANDSCAPE WHERE THESE STIMULI ARE ISOLATED FROM OTHER URBAN FEATURES. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH TEAM INCLUDES EXPERTS IN PHYSIOLOGY, BEHAVIOR, AND ECOLOGY WHO WILL QUANTITATIVELY EVALUATE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL AND POPULATION, ADVANCING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE EFFECTS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY ON NATURE ACROSS MULTIPLE FIELDS. AND 3) HOW DO COMBINED MULTI-SENSORY STRESSORS AFFECT ORGANISMS ACROSS BIOLOGICAL SCALES? ACROSS GRADIENTS AND COMBINATIONS OF LIGHT AND NOISE, AT THE PROXIMATE LEVEL THE TEAM WILL MEASURE (A) PHYSIOLOGY (E.G., GLUCOCORTICOIDS, MELATONIN, TESTOSTERONE, HORMONE RECEPTORS, CLOCK GENES), AND (B) BEHAVIORS OF NESTING BIRDS (E.G., AGGRESSION, BOLDNESS, SONG STRUCTURE, SETTLEMENT, MOVEMENT). WE ALSO STRIVE TO BUILD A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO (ANOTHER NON-LAND GRANT UNIVERSITY) AND THE UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING WHEREIN A STUDENT EXCHANGE AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WILL BE DEVELOPED. FURTHERMORE, OUTREACH EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF BULL MANAGEMENT WILL BE REPLICATED AT THE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS. THIS PROJECT FULFILLS THE INTEGRATED, LARGE-SCALE COMPREHENSIVE INITIATIVES BY COMBINING AND IMPROVING THE TEACHING, RESEARCH, AND OUTREACH MISSION OF THE CAL POLY BULL TEST. THESE INSTITUTIONS COMPLEMENT RESEARCH, TEACHING, AND OUTREACH EFFORTS BECAUSE OF DIFFERENCES IN BREEDING/CALVING SEASON AND BULL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES. THE NATURE OF RESEARCH OF BEEF BULLS TYPICALLY RESULTS IN LOW ANIMAL NUMBERS. HOWEVER, THIS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT WILL STRENGTHEN THE PROJECT AND DATA INTEGRITY.

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY ADDRESS THE GAP THAT EXISTS BETWEEN THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE FOOD INDUSTRY EMPLOYERS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS RELATED TO NEW GRADUATES' FOOD PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (FPD) SKILLS AND THE REAL PERFORMANCE OF THESE GRADUATES WHEN TASKED WITH MANAGING AND LEADING FPD PROJECTS.WHY FOCUS ON FPD COURSES? (1) FPD IS A CAPSTONE COURSE IN MOST FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS, YET IT IS NOT INCLUDED AS AN INDEPENDENT COURSE IN THE GUIDELINES FOR INSTITUTE OF FOOD TECHNOLOGISTS (IFT) APPROVAL OF UNDERGRADUATE FOOD SCIENCE AND FOOD TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS. (2) WHILE THERE ARE NO FPD-SPECIFIC IFT ESSENTIAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (ELOS) DEFINED1, 2, NUMEROUS IFT ELOS ARE RELEVANT AND ARE APPLIED TO ASSESS FPD COURSES NATIONWIDE. (3) FPD REQUIRES THE TEACHING AND APPLICATION OF CORE CONCEPTS LEARNED IN THE FUNDAMENTAL FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COURSES SUCH AS FOOD MICROBIOLOGY AND SAFETY, FOOD PROCESS AND ENGINEERING, FOOD CHEMISTRY, AND SENSORY EVALUATION OF FOODS COMBINED WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES RELATED TO THE BUSINESS ASPECT OF THE COURSE SUCH AS ECONOMICS AND MARKETING. (4) CURRENTLY, THERE IS NO BROADLY ACCEPTED TEXTBOOK OR RESOURCE MATERIALS WITH WHICH TO TEACH THE COURSE UNLIKE OTHER TEXTBOOKS COMMONLY USED IN FOOD SCIENCE CURRICULA NATIONWIDE.TEACHING FOOD PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (FPD) EFFECTIVELY FACES SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES. THESE CHALLENGES INCLUDE LACK OF TRAINING, THE ABSENCE OF A STANDARD TEXTBOOK, AND THE DISPARITY OF THE FPD CURRICULUM ACROSS INSTITUTIONS. TO OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES, THE PROPOSED PROJECT SEEKS TO DEVELOP CONTENT FOR INSTRUCTORS TEACHING FPD. OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE A STANDARDIZED FPD CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY TO BRIDGE THE GAPS BETWEEN THE INDUSTRY, EDUCATORS, AND STUDENTS TO CREATE ROBUST AND JOB-READY PRODUCT DEVELOPERS. WE ENVISION DEVELOPING 35-50 MODULES ACCESSIBLE TO UNIVERSITIES AND INDUSTRY TO SUPPORT HIGH-QUALITY FPD TEACHING FOR BOTH INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA AND ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, BRIDGING THEINDUSTRY WITH FACULTY AND STUDENTS, AND PREPARING QUALITY GRADUATES FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY.
