A CULTURALLY RELEVANT APPROACH TO SPATIAL COMPUTATIONAL THINKING SKILLS AND CAREER AWARENESS THROUGH AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT -THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN AND RESEARCH A PROJECT FOR DEVELOPING UPPER-ELEMENTARY LATINX STUDENTS' SPATIAL COMPUTATIONAL THINKING SKILLS AND AWARENESS OF COMPUTATIONALLY-INTENSIVE CAREERS. THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN IMMERSIVE, CULTURALLY RELEVANT, AND ACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN MINECRAFT: EDUCATION EDITION (MEE). MINECRAFT, WHICH IS USED BY MILLIONS WORLDWIDE, ENABLES PARTICIPANTS TO EXPLORE A THREE-DIMENSIONAL WORLD, DISCOVER AND USE RAW MATERIALS, ENGINEER NEW ENVIRONMENTS, CREATE TOOLS AND STRUCTURES, AND SIMPLE MACHINES. THIS VIDEOGAME PLATFORM EMPHASIZES FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, NEAR-PEER MENTORSHIP, PEER COLLABORATION, AND EXPERT MODELING. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A UNIQUE SET OF EXTENDED AND AGE-APPROPRIATE SPATIAL PROGRAMMING FUNCTIONS AND ENGAGE PARTICIPANTS IN DEVELOPING SPATIAL COMPUTATIONAL THINKING SKILLS (SCT). THESE SKILLS WILL SUPPORT THE ABILITY TO LEARN TO ABSTRACT KEY SPATIAL FEATURES, TO DECOMPOSE SHAPES WITH GEOMETRIC REPRESENTATION AND RECOGNIZE PATTERNS, AND TO USE PROGRAMMING AND COMPUTING TOOLS FOR SPATIAL ALGORITHM DESIGN. THE PROJECT WILL INTRODUCE PARTICIPANTS TO COMPUTATIONALLY-INTENSIVE STEM CAREERS WHERE THESE SKILLS ARE INCREASINGLY DEMANDED IN AREAS SUCH AS ROBOTICS, VIRTUAL REALITY, AND SMART GEOSPATIAL SYSTEMS. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A UNIQUE SET OF BILINGUAL, EXTENDED AND AGE-APPROPRIATE VISUAL PROGRAMMING FUNCTIONS TO ENABLE THOUSANDS OF UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO ENGAGE IN HIGH-QUALITY SPATIAL PROGRAMMING LEARNING EXPERIENCES. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE GAME IN SCHOOL OR AT HOME. DUE TO LOW-COST MATERIALS AND THE SELF-PACED LEARNING DESIGN, THE LEARNING ACTIVITIES ARE FLEXIBLE AND AFFORDABLE FOR FAMILIES AND EDUCATORS WHO HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS. THROUGH DESIGN-BASED RESEARCH, THE PROJECT WILL ADDRESS TWO RESEARCH QUESTIONS: 1) HOW CAN AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT BE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT UPPER-ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LATINX STUDENTS' SPATIAL COMPUTATIONAL THINKING SKILL DEVELOPMENT, CAREER EXPLORATION, AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT? 2) WHAT ARE THE IMMEDIATE AND SUSTAINED IMPACTS OF THE PROGRAM ON PARTICIPATING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, PARENTS/GUARDIANS, AND COLLEGE STUDENTS? THE PROJECT WILL BEGIN WITH USABILITY AND FEASIBILITY STUDIES THAT WILL INFORM THE ITERATIVE DESIGN OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT, FOLLOWED UP BY EXPERIMENTAL, CONTROLLED STUDIES. THE PROJECT WILL COLLECT DATA USING MIXED-METHODS INCLUDING PARTICIPANT REFLECTIONS, THINK-ALOUDS, SURVEYS OF CAREER INTEREST DEVELOPMENT, OBSERVATIONS, INTERVIEWS, DATA ANALYTICS, AND ASSESSMENTS OF COMPUTATIONAL, SPATIAL SKILLS AND SELF-EFFICACY. THE RESEARCH FINDINGS REVEALED THROUGH THIS PROJECT CAN PROVIDE RICH INSIGHTS INTO PROGRAM DESIGNS THAT FOSTER LATINX STUDENTS? INTEREST AND AWARENESS IN COMPUTING AND EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, PEER COLLABORATION, AND NEAR-PEER MENTOR FACILITATION IN AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS, AND LESSON PLANS WILL BE SHARED IN THE MINECRAFT WORLD LIBRARY TO BE SCALED TO A NATIONAL LEVEL, INCORPORATED IN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND USED IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOMS AS PART OF COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION INTEGRATED STEAM CURRICULUM. PROJECT RESEARCH FINDINGS WILL BE SHARED WITH RESEARCHERS, DEVELOPERS, AND STEM EDUCATORS THROUGH CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS. FAMILY PARTICIPATION WILL BE SUPPORTED THROUGH BILINGUAL RESOURCES AND OTHER SUPPORTS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE PROJECT WEBSITE. THE PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS (ITEST) PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS PROJECTS THAT BUILD UNDERSTANDINGS OF PRACTICES, PROGRAM ELEMENTS, CONTEXTS, AND PROCESSES CONTRIBUTING TO INCREASING STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) AND INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) CAREERS. CAREER: EFFECTS OF PREGNANCY AND LACTATION ON MUSCLE-TENDON FORM AND FUNCTION IN THE RAT, RATTUS NORVEGICUS -THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF SKELETAL MUSCLE AND ASSOCIATED CONNECTIVE TISSUES DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION. PREGNANCY AND LACTATION ARE TWO OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL STATES IN MAMMALS. BECAUSE INDIVIDUALS CANNOT INCREASE ENERGY UTILIZATION INDEFINITELY TO KEEP UP WITH THESE METABOLIC DEMANDS, OTHER PROCESSES MUST BECOME LESS COSTLY. THE RESEARCH PROJECT TESTS THE HYPOTHESIS THAT LOCOMOTOR COSTS ARE REDUCED DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION TO OFFSET THE HIGHER ENERGETIC COSTS. AN INTEGRATED SUITE OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING COMPUTATIONAL MODELING, WILL BE USED TO QUANTIFY LOCOMOTOR ACTIVITY AND FORM AND FUNCTION OF MUSCLES AND TENDONS DURING MOVEMENT. THIS INFORMATION WILL LEAD TO A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THE METABOLIC COSTS OF MUSCLE-TENDON INTERACTIONS DURING LOCOMOTION AND HOW THEY CHANGE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION, AND THE RESULTS SHOULD ALLOW BETTER TAILORED ADVICE REGARDING EXERCISE FOR WOMEN IN THE PRE- AND POST-NATAL PHASES. THE PROJECT WILL CREATE 10 PAID SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATES AND 10 FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, 5 YEARS OF A PAID LAB TECHNICIAN POSITION FOR AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, AND THREE MENTORED POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION. TEACHING RESOURCES TO IDENTIFY NEW AREAS OF FEMALE-SPECIFIC ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY RESEARCH WILL BE DEVELOPED AND DISSEMINATED. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO TEST WHETHER TEACHING FEMALE-SPECIFIC ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY IN INTRODUCTORY CLASSES INCREASES THE SENSE OF BELONGING FOR FEMALE STUDENTS IN STEM, WHICH COULD LEAD TO CHANGES IN HOW THE SUBJECT IS TAUGHT AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL. THE OVERARCHING AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND THE FORM AND FUNCTION OF SKELETAL MUSCLE AND ITS CONNECTIVE TISSUES DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION. IT IS HYPOTHESIZED THAT HORMONAL EFFECTS ON ELASTIC TISSUES DURING PREGNANCY AND/OR LACTATION IMPROVE LOCOMOTOR PERFORMANCE BY INCREASING THE USAGE OF ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY. USING A MODEL OF MAMMALIAN MUSCLE-TENDON PHYSIOLOGY, THE RAT RATTUS NORVEGICUS, THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR WILL LEAD A TEAM OF UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS: [1] QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF PREGNANCY AND LACTATION ON GAIT MECHANICS, ENERGETICS AND IN VIVO MUSCLE-TENDON FUNCTION, USING HIGH-SPEED VIDEOGRAPHY, IMPLANTED ELECTROMYOGRAPHY, SONOMICROMETRY, AND INDIRECT CALORIMETRY. [2] CHARACTERIZE IN SITU, DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION, THE FORM AND FUNCTION OF AN ISOLATED HINDLIMB MUSCLE-TENDON UNIT, THE LATERAL GASTROCNEMIUS AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE ACHILLES TENDON. BY USING THE SAME SUBJECTS TO TRACK THE FUNCTION OF LEG MUSCLE-TENDONS IN VIVO AND WHEN THE MUSCLE-TENDON IS ISOLATED IN AN ANESTHETIZED ANIMAL, MUSCLE-TENDON FUNCTION WILL BE DIRECTLY LINKED TO WHOLE BODY MOVEMENT. [3] DEVELOP TEACHING RESOURCES TO IDENTIFY NEW AREAS OF FEMALE-SPECIFIC ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY RESEARCH AND ENHANCE FEMALE STEM STUDENTS? SENSE OF BELONGING. THE WORK WILL SET THE STAGE FOR A CAREER-LONG RESEARCH PROGRAM THAT INTEGRATES LABORATORY WORK ON A MODEL ORGANISM WITH COMPARATIVE FIELD STUDIES, AND ADVANCES AN UNDER-INVESTED FIELD OF RESEARCH WITH POTENTIAL IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH AND WELFARE. THE RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED AT A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, INTEGRATING THE PROJECT?S EDUCATIONAL GOALS WITH THE SCIENTIFIC WORK. THE SETUP INCLUDES ADVANCED IMAGING IN CONJUNCTION WITH A DIGITAL MICROMIRROR DEVICE TO CONDUCT NOVEL STUDIES IN QUANTUM-STATE ENGINEERING. THE MULTI-STEP RESEARCH PROGRAM ADDRESSES ELEMENTS FROM FUNDAMENTAL QUANTUM PHYSICS WITH A FOCUS ON THE REALIZATION OF NON-HERMITIAN PROCEDURES AND THE STUDY OF NON-HERMITIAN HAMILTONIAN DYNAMICS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO ENHANCED QUANTUM SENSING. WHILE ULTRACOLD ATOMS ARE A PARTICULARLY POWERFUL TESTBED FOR QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES, THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES OF QUANTUM INFORMATION SCIENCE ARE RELEVANT TO A LARGE AND DIVERSE RANGE OF QUANTUM PLATFORMS. THROUGH COOPERATION WITH QUANTUM DESIGN, A LEADING INDUSTRY PARTNER, AVENUES FOR LEVERAGING THIS UNIVERSALITY ARE EXPLORED. FROM AN EDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVE, THIS PROJECT INVITES UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN PHYSICS, BIOPHYSICS, MATHEMATICS, COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO TO GAIN VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN SYSTEMS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND IN QUANTUM SCIENCE. IN NATURE, BOTH DISEASE-CAUSING PATHOGENS AND THEIR ANIMAL HOSTS EXHIBIT TREMENDOUS VARIATION. FOR EXAMPLE, HOSTS VARY IN THEIR ABILITY TO RESIST DISEASE, THEIR HISTORY OF DISEASE EXPOSURE AND IMMUNITY, AND THEIR GENERAL PHYSICAL CONDITION, WHILE PATHOGENS VARY IN THEIR ABILITIES TO INFECT HOSTS, PERSIST IN THE ENVIRONMENT, AND SPREAD OVER LONG DISTANCES. THIS VARIATION HAS IMPORTANT CONSEQUENCES FOR HOW DISEASES SPREAD IN POPULATIONS, AND FOR THE EVOLUTION OF BOTH PATHOGEN AND HOST SPECIES. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE SOURCES AND CONSEQUENCES OF VARIATION IN A VIRUS THAT INFECTS THE GULF FRITILLARY BUTTERFLY (AGRAULIS VANILLAE). FIELD AND LAB EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO INVESTIGATE THREE MAIN SOURCES OF VARIATION: PATHOGEN GENETIC VARIATION, HOST VARIATION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL VARIATION DUE TO HUMAN IMPACTS SUCH AS URBANIZATION AND A WARMING CLIMATE. THIS CAREER PROJECT WILL BE STRENGTHENED BY EDUCATION EFFORTS TO BRING NEW VIEWPOINTS INTO ECOLOGY THROUGH SUPPORT OF INCLUSIVE QUANTITATIVE BIOLOGY RESEARCH AND TEACHING. DESPITE A WIDELY RECOGNIZED NATIONAL NEED FOR GRADUATES WITH THE QUANTITATIVE SKILLS SOUGHT BY INDUSTRY, MANY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS STRUGGLE WITH QUANTITATIVE CONTENT AND LEAVE SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMS IN UNACCEPTABLY HIGH NUMBERS. THE EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTS OF THIS WORK ARE FOUNDED IN BIOLOGY EDUCATION RESEARCH ON EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR RETAINING UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN SCIENCE, INCLUDING INDIVIDUALIZED MENTORING THROUGH RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, COURSE-BASED PROGRAMS, AND BUILDING A SENSE OF BELONGING IN SCIENCE. THIS PROJECT IS WELL-POISED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RECENT ADVANCES IN THEORY AND COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS FOR STUDYING HOST AND PATHOGEN VARIATION, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW GENETIC AND ECOLOGICAL SOURCES OF INTRASPECIFIC VARIATION AFFECT HOST-PATHOGEN POPULATION DYNAMICS. WORKING IN AN INSECT-BACULOVIRUS SYSTEM, THIS RESEARCH WILL PRODUCE THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES: 1. USE FIELD AND LAB EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE HOW INTRASPECIFIC VARIATION IN PATHOGEN LIFE HISTORY TRAITS AFFECTS OUTCOMES OF COMPETITION BETWEEN PATHOGEN STRAINS AND LONG-TERM POPULATION DYNAMICS OF HOSTS AND PATHOGENS; 2. QUANTIFY HOW HOST-PATHOGEN INTERACTIONS ARE AFFECTED BY CONTINUOUS VARIATION IN HOST SUSCEPTIBILITY TO INFECTION AND KEY ENVIRONMENTAL SOURCES OF VARIATION; 3.APPLY THE ABOVE FINDINGS TO LARGER SCALES AND LONG-TERM POPULATION CONSEQUENCES USING MATHEMATICAL MODELS THAT INCORPORATE THE ABOVE SOURCES OF VARIATION INTO DISTRIBUTIONS OF HOST AND PATHOGEN TRAITS. DEVELOP A PROGRAM FOR SUSTAINED UNDERGRADUATE-STUDENT-LED BILINGUAL OUTREACH IN OUR LOCAL SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY, WORKING WITH LOCAL PARTNERS AND SCHOOLS; 3. CREATE, PILOT, AND REFINE A COURSE-BASED PROGRAM TO RECRUIT AND SUPPORT UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN QUANTITATIVE UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO. LABORATORY SIMULATIONS OF CLOUD PROCESSING OF SMOKE -THIS PROJECT INCLUDES ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBER OBSERVATIONS OF MULTIPHASE SMOKE CHEMISTRY AND THE INTERACTIONS OF SMOKE WITH CLOUDS. THERE CURRENTLY EXISTS AN OBSERVATIONAL GAP BETWEEN LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS AND FIELD OBSERVATIONS WITH REGARD TO SMOKE PLUME CHEMISTRY. SUBSTANTIAL UNCERTAINTIES REMAIN WITH REGARDS TO HOW SMOKE PLUMES AGE AND EVOLVE AND HOW AEROSOLS EMITTED AND PRODUCED DURING THE EVOLUTION OF SMOKE PLUMES INTERACT WITH OUR CLIMATE. UNDERSTANDING HOW SMOKE INTERACTS WITH SUNLIGHT AND WITH CLOUDS IS A CRITICAL PART OF MAKING ACCURATE CLIMATE PROJECTIONS. THERE ARE FOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES TO THIS PROPOSED WORK: (1) QUANTIFY DRY AGING AND CLOUD PROCESSING EFFECTS ON SECONDARY ORGANIC AEROSOL FORMATION AND LIGHT ABSORPTION WITHIN SMOKE SAMPLES; (2) QUANTIFY THESE EFFECTS ON SMOKE AEROSOL WATER UPTAKE AND SEMI-SOLID OR LIQUID PHASE TRANSITION; (3) TRAIN AND MENTOR 12 DIVERSE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS; AND (4) MENTOR AND TRAIN A POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW TEACH AT A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION (PUI). MOST OF THE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN THE CHAMBRE DE SIMULATION ATMOSPH?RIQUE MULTIPHASIQUE (CESAM) AT THE UNIVERSIT? PARIS EST ? CR?TEIL (UPEC) IN FRANCE. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO FILL A GAP IN THE CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF SMOKE AGING AND CLOUD INTERACTIONS, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO BROWN CARBON AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHAMBER AND FIELD OBSERVATION DATA. THIS RESEARCH INVOLVES WHOLE-SMOKE AND FRACTIONAL SMOKE EXPERIMENTS THAT INCLUDE SECONDARY ORGANIC AEROSOL DRY AGING, CLOUD PROCESSING, AND PYROCUMULUS CLOUD PROCESSING. THIS EFFORT INCLUDES A LARGE NUMBER OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHERS AND PROVIDES THEM WITH SUBSTANTIAL LABORATORY AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. CO-CONSTRUCTING FACULTY CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION -THE OVERALL GOALS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TWOFOLD: TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SYSTEM OF PRIVILEGES AND ADVANTAGES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND TO CREATE A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO HELP ENGINEERING FACULTY DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO CRITICALLY QUESTION SOCIAL, CULTURAL, HISTORICAL, AND POLITICAL EFFECTS OF THIS PRIVILEGE IN ENGINEERING. ENGINEERING EDUCATION IS BUILT ON A SYSTEM THAT HISTORICALLY PRIVILEGES AND NORMALIZES THE VALUES, BELIEFS, EXPERIENCES, AND PERSPECTIVES OF PARTICULAR IDENTITIES THAT GUIDE THE WORK OF THE FIELD. WHILE THERE HAS BEEN SUBSTANTIAL RESEARCH INTO THE MASCULINITY OF ENGINEERING, THERE HAS BEEN LIMITED RESEARCH ABOUT THE ROLE OF PRIVILEGE IN ENGINEERING. THIS PROJECT WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE BY FOCUSING ON THREE RESEARCH QUESTIONS: (1) HOW AND IN WHAT WAYS DOES SYSTEMIC RACISM MANIFEST IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION? (2) WHAT STRATEGIES CAN BE USED TO EFFECTIVELY HELP ENGINEERING FACULTY DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS? AND (3) HOW AND IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE GROWTH OF CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS SUPPORT FACULTY TO IDENTIFY AND CHALLENGE THE SYSTEMIC BARRIERS PREVENTING RACIAL EQUITY IN ENGINEERING? THE RESEARCH WILL SUPPORT ENGINEERING FACULTY TO INTERROGATE THE ASSOCIATED SYSTEMIC BARRIERS PREVENTING RACIAL EQUITY. THIS FOUR-YEAR PROJECT WILL EXAMINE GUIDED, REFLECTIVE JOURNALING OF FACULTY EXPERIENCES IN ENGINEERING AND FIELD NOTES FROM OBSERVATIONS OF THE RESEARCHERS' OWN PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING SETTINGS (E.G. FACULTY MEETINGS, CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS). THESE ARTIFACTS WILL SERVE AS THE BASELINE FOR CREATING THE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DURING YEAR 2. DURING YEARS 3-4, THE PROGRAM WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AND REVISED WITH TWO COHORTS OF 16 ENGINEERING FACULTY EACH, IN A RECURSIVE CO-CONSTRUCTION OF CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND SCRIPTS OF RACE AND RACIAL IDENTITY. THIS PROJECT WILL RESULT IN THE CREATION OF IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES FOR ENGINEERING FACULTY THAT SERVE AS A VEHICLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS, WHICH IS THE FOUNDATION TO ENACT CHANGES THAT WILL ADDRESS RACIAL INEQUITY IN ENGINEERING AND PROVIDE A MODEL THAT SUPPORTS PRACTICES TO CHALLENGE PRIVILEGE IN ENGINEERING SPACES. THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE RACIAL EQUITY IN STEM EDUCATION PROGRAM (EHR RACIAL EQUITY). THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS PROJECTS THAT PROMOTE RACIAL EQUITY IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. AWARDED PROJECTS CENTER THE VOICES, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCES OF THE INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND INSTITUTIONS MOST IMPACTED BY THE INEQUITIES CAUSED BY SYSTEMIC RACISM IN STEM FIELDS. IRES: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DATA SCIENCE FOR THE UNDERSTANDING, PREDICTION AND PREVENTION OF DISEASE (AI-UPP) -OVER THE PAST FEW DECADES THE GENERATION OF ?BIG DATA? WITHIN BIOLOGY AND HEALTH HAS EXPLODED. THIS IS LARGELY DUE TO TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS WITHIN THE ?-OMICS? SPACE AS WELL AS IN MICROSCOPY AND MEDICAL IMAGING. WITH THE AVAILABILITY OF THESE LARGE DATASETS, NEW CHALLENGES ARE ARISING RELATED TO THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THESE DATA. AS SUCH, WE TURN TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND DATA SCIENCE TECHNIQUES TO EFFICIENTLY AND ACCURATELY MINE DATA TO MAXIMIZE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF VARIOUS BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. ALTHOUGH SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES HAVE BEEN MADE IN THIS AREA, NEW AI AND DATA SCIENCE METHODS ARE NEEDED AS EXISTING BIOTECHNOLOGIES IMPROVE AND NEW METHODS EMERGE WHICH WILL INCREASE THE VOLUME AND COMPLEXITY OF THESE DATASETS. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE NEW METHODS REQUIRES THE CREATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF AI AND DATA SCIENTISTS. GIVEN THIS NEED, THIS IRES PROJECT AIMS TO TRAIN 24 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (8 STUDENTS PER YEAR FOR 3 YEARS) FROM PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS IN THE U.S. TO CONDUCT 10 WEEKS OF SUPERVISED RESEARCH IN HOST LABS AT THE KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET AND THE SCIENCE FOR LIFE LABORATORY IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN. STUDENTS FROM THE U.S. FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN ENGINEERING/COMPUTER SCIENCE ARE PRIORITIZED IN THE RECRUITMENT EFFORTS FOR THIS PROGRAM. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RESEARCH MENTORS IN SAN DIEGO AND SWEDEN, STUDENTS WORK ON PROJECTS IN HOST LABS FOCUSED AROUND A CENTRALIZED THEME OF DEVELOPING ADVANCED AI AND/OR DATA SCIENCE TOOLS AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING, PREDICTING AND/OR PREVENTING DISEASE. GIVEN THIS RESEARCH THEME, THIS WORK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE TOOLS THAT WILL ULTIMATELY SERVE TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF PEOPLE IN SOCIETY. ADDITIONALLY, THROUGH SCIENTIFIC, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PUBLIC POLICY AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, THIS IRES SITE AIMS TO DEVELOP GLOBALLY-ENGAGED SCIENTISTS/ENGINEERS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THEIR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IS GROUNDED IN AND CONTRIBUTES TO SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. THE RESEARCH PROJECTS WHICH THE IRES STUDENTS WORK ON ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF BIOMEDICAL DATA SCIENCE. EACH PROJECT FOCUSES ON DEVELOPING OR IMPROVING UPON AI AND DATA SCIENCE TOOLS TO ADVANCE OUR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND, PREDICT AND/OR PREVENT DISEASE. THESE RESEARCH EFFORTS SERVE TO DEEPEN OUR KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTAL BIOLOGY BY CONTRIBUTING TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF DISEASE MECHANISMS AS WELL AS EXAMINING THE PREVENTIVE MEDICINE CAPABILITIES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. ADDITIONALLY, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS CONTRIBUTES TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF EARLY DISEASE DETECTION METHODS RELATED TO PATTERNS DISCOVERED USING AI-FACILITATED RADIOLOGY/PATHOLOGY TECHNIQUES. FURTHERMORE, THIS WORK ADVANCES ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE BY DEVELOPING NEW COMPUTATIONAL METHODS USEFUL TO THE FIELDS OF BIOLOGY, BIOINFORMATICS, BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. LASTLY, ADVANCES RESULTING FROM THIS RESEARCH ARE ALSO LIKELY TO CONTRIBUTE TO FIELDS OUTSIDE OF THOSE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THIS WORK, SUCH AS WITH IMAGE OBJECT DETECTION. THESE ENDEAVORS ARE SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL ADVANCES TO BORYLATION AND BORON-CONVERSION CHEMISTRY THAT ARE ANTICIPATED AND DUE TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE KINDS OF ORGANOPHOSPHORUS PRODUCTS BEING GENERATED, WHICH HAVE POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS AS PHARMACEUTICAL AGENTS, AGROCHEMICALS, AND OTHER ADVANCED MATERIALS OF BROAD UTILITY. PROFESSOR CLARK WORKS PRIMARILY WITH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT COWORKERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO AND, ACCORDINGLY, THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THE FUNDED PROJECT WILL EXTEND TO THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS) FIELDS. TWO DISTINCT AIMS ARE BEING PURSUED THAT EXPLORE THIS THEME IN THE CONTEXT OF EITHER ALKYL OR ARYL ORGANOPHOSPHORUS COMPOUNDS. IN AIM 1, IRIDIUM-CATALYZED C(SP3)?H BORYLATION OF ALKYL PHOSPHINES, PHOSPHONATES, AND RELATED ORGANOPHOSPHORUS SPECIES, IS BEING INVESTIGATED IN THE PRESENCE OF CHIRAL LIGANDS TO ACHIEVE AN ENANTIOSELECTIVE SYNTHESIS OF SECONDARY ALKYL BORONATES. SEQUENCING THIS CHEMISTRY WITH THE EXPANSIVE RANGE OF REACTIONS THAT ALLOW FOR THE STEREOSPECIFIC CONVERSION OF C?B BONDS INTO C?C OR C?X (X = O, N) BONDS ALLOWS FOR EXPEDIENT SYNTHESES OF USEFUL ENANTIOENRICHED CHIRAL PHOSPHINES. IN AIM 2, BIARYL FORMATION FROM ARYL BORONATES GENERATED BY PHOSPHORUS-DIRECTED ORTHO BORYLATION OF ARYL PHOSPHONATES, IS BEING EXPLORED VIA NOVEL OXIDATIVE COPPER-CATALYZED HOMO- AND HETERO-COUPLING PROCESSES. OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXECUTING THIS CHEMISTRY, WHICH OFFERS A CONCISE ROUTE TO SOME IMPORTANT CLASSES OF AXIALLY CHIRAL BISPHOSPHINE LIGANDS, IN AN ENANTIOSELECTIVE MODALITY ARE ALSO UNDER INVESTIGATION. MPS-ASCEND FACULTY CATALYST: A PLANET IS BORN: LEVERAGING CURRENT AND NEXT GENERATION FACILITIES TO CATCH PLANET FORMATION IN THE ACT -ASTRONOMERS CONTINUE TO PIECE TOGETHER AN UNDERSTANDING OF EXOPLANET FORMATION CONDITIONS, COMPOSITIONS, AND ENVIRONMENTS. ONE CHALLENGE IS THAT THEIR BRIGHT STELLAR HOSTS HINDER THE DETAILED CHARACTERIZATION OF THE PLANETS? ATMOSPHERES. THE DISCOVERY OF PLANETARY-MASS COMPANIONS (PMCS) ON WIDE ORBITS HAS ALLOWED FOR THE STUDY OF ATMOSPHERES OF JUPITER-LIKE EXOPLANETS, SERVING AS ANALOGS FOR THOSE ON CLOSER-IN ORBITS LIKE THOSE OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM GIANTS. A RESEARCHER AND HER TEAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO HAS BEEN AWARDED A MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES ASCENDING FACULTY CATALYST (AFC) AWARD TO OBSERVE ONGOING GAS GIANT PLANET FORMATION IN WIDE-ORBIT PLANETARY-MASS, AND TO DESIGN SPECIALIZED OBSERVING MODES IN ANTICIPATION OF FUTURE INSTRUMENTATION UPGRADES. THIS BOTH EXPANDS THE TYPES OF EXOPLANETS THAT CAN BE CHARACTERIZED WHILE ALSO LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR PREPARING DIRECT-IMAGING STUDIES WITH UPCOMING 30-M CLASS TELESCOPES. THIS AWARD WILL SUPPORT FOUR UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER STUDENT RESEARCHERS AS WELL AS TWO FULL-TIME POST-BACCALAUREATE STUDENT RESEARCHERS. THE RESEARCHER WILL EXPAND THE DEPARTMENT'S PHYSICS RETENTION EFFORTS WITH YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES SUCH AS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, RESEARCH SKILLS TRAINING AND CAREER INFORMATION WOVEN INTO COURSE OFFERINGS, AND A NEAR-PEER MENTORING PROGRAM WITHIN THE CAMPUS SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. OVER THE COURSE OF THE AFC AWARD, THE PROPOSER WILL WORK ON TWO PROJECTS. THE FIRST IS TO OBSERVE ONGOING GAS GIANT PLANET FORMATION AT MID-INFRARED WAVELENGTHS IN WIDE-ORBIT, PMCS WITH THE SLICER COMBINED WITH ARRAY OF LENSLETS FOR EXOPLANET SPECTROSCOPY (SCALES) DURING ITS SCIENCE DEMONSTRATION SURVEY POST-COMMISSIONING ON THE KECK TELESCOPE. THE SECOND PROJECT IS TO DESIGN SPECIALIZED HIGHER-RESOLUTION OBSERVING MODES IN ANTICIPATION OF UPGRADE OPPORTUNITIES WITH SCALES. THE GOAL IS TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF GAS GIANT EXOPLANETS AND WIDE-ORBIT PMCS. CURRENT THEORIES OF PLANETARY ACCRETION SUGGEST THE OFT-USED HYDROGEN LINE TO TOTAL ACCRETION LUMINOSITY RELATIONSHIPS FOR LOW-MASS STARS MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE AND THE PI AIMS TO PROVIDE THE FIRST CONSTRAINTS ON EMPIRICAL LINE ACCRETION RELATIONSHIPS DOWN TO PLANETARY MASSES. THIS WORK WILL DETERMINE WHETHER ACCRETION MODELS NEED TO BE ADJUSTED IN THE LOW-MASS REGIME, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INSIGHT INTO THEIR ACCRETION PROCESSES AND PLACE NEW CONSTRAINTS ON MID-INFRARED PROTOPLANETARY ACCRETION TRACERS. IN ADDITION, THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR WILL ADVISE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS AND FULL-TIME POST-BACCALAUREATE STUDENTS, INTRODUCE DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC PROGRAMMATIC STRUCTURE INTO CAMPUS SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAMS, AND DEVELOP A RESEARCH-SKILLS CURRICULUM FOR INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS COURSES. UNDERSTANDING THESE SOFT MATERIALS, WHICH OFTEN POSSESS BOTH FLUID-LIKE AND SOLID-LIKE PROPERTIES, AND HOW THEY FLOW OR DEFORM IS NECESSARY FOR ADVANCING MANY TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING 3D PRINTING WHERE THE PROPERTIES OF THE INK OR RESIN MUST BE FINELY TUNED. TO MAKE PROGRESS ON OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF SOFT MATERIALS, THIS IRES TRACK I PROJECT WILL STRENGTHEN COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN RESEARCHERS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND IN MEXICO. EACH YEAR OVER THE 3-YEAR DURATION OF THIS PROJECT, 6 STUDENTS WILL BE RECRUITED TO TAKE PART IN THIS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. U.S. STUDENTS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS AND FROM PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGES AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES WILL BE TARGETED IN THE RECRUITMENT EFFORT. THOSE STUDENTS WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH OVER THE SUMMER AT EITHER THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN ADVANCED MATERIALS (CENTRO DE INVESTIGACI?N EN MATERIALES AVANZADOS, CIMAV) IN MONTERREY, MEXICO OR THE UNIVERSITY OF GUANAJUATO IN LE?N, MEXICO. WORKING WITH RESEARCH MENTORS IN MEXICO AND THE MENTORS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, STUDENTS WILL TAKE VARIOUS APPROACHES TO STUDY THE PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY OF SOFT MATERIALS. SUCH APPROACHES INCLUDE USING COMPUTER SIMULATIONS TO STUDY FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF SOFT MATERIALS AND USING 3D PRINTERS TO APPLY OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF SOFT MATERIALS TO THE DESIGN AND USE OF NEW INKS AND RESINS. STUDENTS TAKING PART IN THIS RESEARCH AND RECEIVING MENTORSHIP FROM U.S. AND MEXICAN SCIENTISTS WILL BE PREPARED TO COOPERATE WITH DIVERSE TEAMS ACROSS BORDERS AND TO BECOME LEADERS OF A GLOBALLY ENGAGED SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE. THIS IRES PROJECT WILL STRENGTHEN COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN RESEARCHERS IN THE U.S. AND MEXICO BY SUPPORTING THE PARTICIPATION OF 6 UNDERGRADUATES PER YEAR IN MENTORED SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. THE PIS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY FULLERTON WILL RECRUIT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS AND FROM PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES. AFTER RECEIVING TRAINING ON BASIC RESEARCH SKILLS, SELECTED STUDENTS WILL SPEND APPROXIMATELY 8 WEEKS AT EITHER THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN ADVANCED MATERIALS (CENTRO DE INVESTIGACI?N EN MATERIALES AVANZADOS, CIMAV) IN MONTERREY, MEXICO OR THE UNIVERSITY OF GUANAJUATO IN LE?N, MEXICO. RESEARCH PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY STUDENTS WILL ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF SOFT MATTER, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREAS OF COLLOID SCIENCE AND RHEOLOGY. PROJECTS WILL INCLUDE INVESTIGATING THE RHEOLOGY OF NANOCELLULOSE AND CELLULOSE COMPOSITES FOR USE IN 3D PRINTING APPLICATIONS, QUANTIFYING THE TRANSLATIONAL AND ROTATIONAL DIFFUSION OF ANISOTROPIC COLLOIDS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND TRANSPORT AND MICRORHEOLOGY IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS, AND DEVELOPING COMPUTER SIMULATIONS OF COLLOIDAL PARTICLES IN EXTERNAL FIELDS. THESE PROJECTS WILL LEAD TO NEW ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES IN MICRORHEOLOGY AND OPTICAL MICROSCOPY AND WILL ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF INKS FOR 3D PRINTING. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO (1) TRAIN AND MENTOR 18 (6 STUDENTS PER YEAR FOR 3 YEARS) UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ON SOFT MATTER RESEARCH IN A COLLABORATIVE AND INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT, (2) DEVELOP AND FOSTER RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AMONG INSTITUTIONS IN THE U.S. AND MEXICO, (3) CHARACTERIZE AND HARNESS THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF COMPLEX FLUIDS AND GELS FOR ENHANCING OUR FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF SOFT MATTER AND FOR APPLYING SUCH MATERIALS TO 3D PRINTING APPLICATIONS, (4) DISSEMINATE RESEARCH OUTCOMES AT SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES AND IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS, AND (5) DEVELOP A COHORT OF SCIENTISTS FROM PREDOMINANTLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS WHO CAN NETWORK AND COLLABORATE EFFECTIVELY WITH OTHERS FROM VARIOUS BACKGROUNDS AND WHO CAN DRAW UPON A DIVERSE SET OF MENTORS. IRES PARTICIPANTS WILL ADVANCE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE IN PROJECTS THAT RANGE FROM APPLIED TO FUNDAMENTAL USING EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: INTEGRATING SOCIOTECHNICAL ISSUES INTO ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING STARTING WITH CIRCUITS -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ENHANCING THE PREPARATION OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS THROUGH HELPING THEM ADDRESS SOCIOTECHNICAL ISSUES IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (EE). TYPICALLY, THE UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING CURRICULUM EMPHASIZES PURELY TECHNICAL TOPICS, BUT REAL ENGINEERING PROBLEMS INVOLVE COMPLEX SOCIAL ISSUES AND REQUIRE BOTH TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL EXPERTISE. MOST ENGINEERING INSTRUCTORS HAVE BEEN EDUCATED WITH A DEEP TECHNICAL FOCUS, THEY HAVE LITTLE EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF ENGINEERING, AND THEY FEEL ILL-EQUIPPED TO INTEGRATE NON-TECHNICAL TOPICS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO HELP ENGINEERING INSTRUCTORS INTEGRATE SOCIOTECHNICAL ISSUES INTO THEIR COURSES BY DEVELOPING FOUR MODULES FOR AN INTRODUCTORY CIRCUITS COURSE. EACH MODULE IS LINKED TO TECHNICAL CIRCUITS TOPICS, AND EACH EMPHASIZES A DIFFERENT SOCIOTECHNICAL ISSUE SUCH AS THE CONFLICT MINERALS (MINERALS SOURCED FROM AN AREA WITH ARMED CONFLICT THAT IMPACTS THE TRADE OF THOSE MINERALS) NEEDED FOR ELECTRIC CIRCUITS COMPONENTS AND REPURPOSING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES. CIRCUITS IS TYPICALLY THE FIRST COURSE IN THE EE CURRICULUM, AND IT ENROLLS STUDENTS FROM MANY DISCIPLINES. THUS, INSPIRING ENGINEERING INSTRUCTORS TO IMPLEMENT THESE SOCIOTECHNICAL MODULES IN INTRODUCTORY CIRCUITS COURSES HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR FAR-REACHING INFLUENCE ON THE FIELD. THE MODULES ARE INTENDED TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE MIDDLE YEARS OF THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE, WHEN STUDENTS ARE FORMING THEIR ENGINEERING IDENTITIES, AND THEY SHOULD HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE KEY ACCREDITATION OUTCOMES RELATED TO SOCIAL AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES. THIS PROJECT HOPES TO IMPACT THE PROFESSIONAL FORMATION OF OVER 900 STUDENTS IN 14 COURSES ACROSS SIX INSTITUTIONS. INCLUDING SOCIOTECHNICAL ISSUES IN A FUNDAMENTAL COURSE SUCH AS CIRCUITS SENDS A POWERFUL MESSAGE TO STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT IS VALUED BY THE FIELD, AND THAT MESSAGE CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED IN EE INCLUDING WOMEN AND STUDENTS OF COLOR. A SOCIOTECHNICAL MODULE ON CONFLICT MINERALS HAS ALREADY BEEN DEVELOPED BY ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS (PIS) AND TESTED IN A CIRCUITS COURSE TAUGHT BY THAT PI. A COHORT OF EE GRADUATE STUDENTS WILL BE RECRUITED TO ASSIST IN DEVELOPING OTHER MODULES USING PRINCIPLES OF BACKWARDS COURSE DESIGN TO CREATE LEARNING OBJECTIVES, INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES, AND POST-CLASS ASSESSMENTS WITH HOMEWORK AND EXAM QUESTIONS FOR EACH MODULE. THESE GRADUATE STUDENTS WILL BE BETTER PREPARED TO TEACH EE COURSES THAT PROMOTE A SENSE OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. AFTER PRE-PILOTING EACH MODULE AT A SMALL PRIVATE INSTITUTION (UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO) AND PILOTING IT AT A LARGE PUBLIC RESEARCH INSTITUTION (UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN; UM), THE USE OF THESE MODULES WILL BE SCALED UP TO OTHER LARGE CIRCUITS COURSES AT UM AND AT FOUR OTHER INSTITUTIONS. STUDENT FEEDBACK WILL BE USED TO REFINE THE MODULES AND EXPLORE THE EXPERIENCES OF THE ENGINEERING INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS WHO ENGAGE WITH THEM. ASSESSMENT WILL FOCUS ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MODULES AT REINFORCING TECHNICAL CONTENT, PROMOTING STUDENTS? SENSE OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND DISRUPTING STUDENTS? ADHERENCE TO NORMATIVE CULTURAL BELIEFS. SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTING THESE SOCIOTECHNICAL MODULES IN A RANGE OF DIFFERENT CONTEXTS SHOULD ENHANCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF WIDESPREAD ADOPTION AND WILL PROVIDE A MODEL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIOTECHNICAL MODULES IN TRADITIONAL ENGINEERING CLASSES WHICH CAN BE ADAPTED BY OTHER INSTRUCTORS. TRILLIONS OF NEUTRINOS FROM THE SUN PASS THROUGH OUR BODIES EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. THEY DON?T AFFECT US, AND MOST OF THEM CHANGED THEIR IDENTITY -- THEIR ?FLAVOR? -- WHILE STREAMING FROM THE CORE OF THE SUN. THESE INTERESTING PROPERTIES OWE TO THEIR FUNDAMENTAL QUANTUM MECHANICAL NATURE; ALTHOUGH ALL PARTICLES IN THE UNIVERSE EVOLVE QUANTUM MECHANICALLY, THE QUANTUM EFFECTS ARE ESPECIALLY ACUTE IN THE EVOLUTION OF NEUTRINOS. FOR DECADES, TERRESTRIAL EXPERIMENTS UNVEILED THE PROPERTIES OF NEUTRINOS. HOWEVER, THEIR GHOST-LIKE NATURE PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT BARRIER TO FULLY ELUCIDATE THE NEUTRINO PROPERTIES. CONNECTING COSMOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS TO FUNDAMENTAL NEUTRINO PHYSICS REQUIRES A SELF-CONSISTENT EXAMINATION OF THE NONLINEAR QUANTUM KINETIC NEUTRINO EVOLUTION BECAUSE THIS EVOLUTION PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DYNAMICS OF THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE AS WELL AS THE INTERCONVERSION BETWEEN PROTONS AND NEUTRONS. RUI: COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: ASSESSING THE CAUSES OF THE PYROSOME INVASION AND PERSISTENCE IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT ECOSYSTEM -A KEY COMPONENT OF THE OCEAN FOOD WEB IS COMPRISED OF FLOATING ANIMALS, OR ZOOPLANKTON, THAT TRANSFER ENERGY FROM PHYTOPLANKTON TO FISH, WHALES, AND BIRDS. ZOOPLANKTON INCLUDE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ORGANISMS THAT CAN BE BROADLY CATEGORIZED AS CRUSTACEAN OR GELATINOUS, WITH MOST FISH AND WHALES PREFERRING CRUSTACEANS AS A FAT-RICH FOOD SOURCE OVER GELATINOUS ANIMALS, WHICH ARE HIGHER IN WATER CONTENT. HISTORICALLY, THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT ECOSYSTEM OFF THE U.S. WEST COAST HAS BEEN DOMINATED BY CRUSTACEAN ZOOPLANKTON, SUCH AS KRILL AND COPEPODS, BUT IN 2014 THERE WERE HUGE ABUNDANCES OF A TYPE OF COLONIAL, GELATINOUS ZOOPLANKTON KNOWN AS PYROSOMES, WHICH CAUSED WIDESPREAD DAMAGE TO FISHERIES BY FOULING FISHING GEAR AND DOMINATING CATCH. ALTHOUGH THE ARRIVAL OF PYROSOMES COINCIDED WITH AN EXTENSIVE MARINE HEATWAVE, LOWER ABUNDANCES HAVE SINCE PERSISTED DESPITE A RETURN TO COOLER OCEAN TEMPERATURES. ANALYSIS OF TIME SERIES DATA FROM THE CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE OCEANIC FISHERIES INVESTIGATIONS (CALCOFI) INDICATE THAT PYROSOMES WERE ALSO OBSERVED IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT MANY DECADES AGO WHEN THE OCEAN WAS NOT PARTICULARLY WARM. THIS STUDY COMBINES ANALYSIS OF PAST SAMPLES FROM CALCOFI, OCEAN CIRCULATION MODELS, AND BIOLOGICAL MODELS TO UNDERSTAND THE CAUSES OF THESE QUICKLY GROWING PYROSOME POPULATIONS IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT. IT SUPPORTS TRAINING FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT IS REACHING K-12 STUDENTS THROUGH A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION THAT IS DEVELOPING NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS (NGSS)-ALIGNED RESOURCES FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHERS IN CALIFORNIA. THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES ARE BEING DISSEMINATED THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA SCIENCE PROJECT AND CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY INITIATIVE. PUBLIC OUTREACH IN SAN DIEGO (CA) IS THROUGH THE ENHANCING YOUR HORIZONS SAN DIEGO CONFERENCE AND THE SAN DIEGO REGIONAL COMPETITION OF THE NATIONAL OCEAN SCIENCES BOWL, AND IN SANTA CRUZ (CA) THROUGH THE SEYMOUR MARINE DISCOVERY CENTER. PREDICTING HOW ECOSYSTEMS RESPOND TO ACCELERATING CLIMATE CHANGE IS A MAJOR CHALLENGE. THE RECENT APPEARANCE OF THE PYROSOME PYROSOMA ATLANTICUM IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT IS A MAJOR PERTURBATION TO THE ECOSYSTEM, AND THE CAUSE REMAINS UNKNOWN. BOTH OCEAN PHYSICS AND PLANKTON FOOD-WEB DYNAMICS ARE KEY DETERMINANTS OF VARIABILITY IN PELAGIC COMMUNITY COMPOSITION IN THIS ECOSYSTEM, YET UNRAVELING THE DEGREE TO WHICH VARIABILITY IN PHYSICS (THROUGH WARMING AND ADVECTION) COMBINES WITH SHIFTING BIOLOGICAL INTERACTIONS (THROUGH NUTRIENT CYCLING AND ALTERED FOOD-WEB DYNAMICS) TO DETERMINE COMPOSITION AND FUNCTION IS COMPLICATED. THIS PROJECT COMBINES THE ANALYSIS OF PAST HISTORICAL SAMPLES FROM SEVEN DECADES OF THE CALCOFI TIME SERIES, DATA-ASSIMILATIVE AND NON-DATA ASSIMILATIVE OCEAN CIRCULATION MODELS, AND BIOLOGICAL POPULATION MODELS TO DETERMINE THE ROLE OCEAN PHYSICS AND BIOLOGICAL INTERACTIONS HAVE PLAYED IN SHAPING PYROSOME ABUNDANCE, TROPHIC DYNAMICS, AND POPULATION GROWTH AND MORTALITY IN THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT. THIS NOVEL FRAMEWORK IS PROVIDING MECHANISTIC UNDERSTANDING THAT IS REQUIRED TO PREDICT HOW PLANKTON COMMUNITIES RESPOND TO CLIMATE CHANGE. UNDERSTANDING THESE SOFT MATERIALS, WHICH OFTEN POSSESS BOTH FLUID-LIKE AND SOLID-LIKE PROPERTIES, AND HOW THEY FLOW OR DEFORM IS NECESSARY FOR ADVANCING MANY TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING 3D PRINTING WHERE THE PROPERTIES OF THE INK OR RESIN MUST BE FINELY TUNED. TO MAKE PROGRESS ON OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF SOFT MATERIALS, THIS IRES TRACK I PROJECT WILL STRENGTHEN COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN RESEARCHERS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND IN MEXICO. PROJECTS WILL INCLUDE INVESTIGATING THE RHEOLOGY OF NANOCELLULOSE AND CELLULOSE COMPOSITES FOR USE IN 3D PRINTING APPLICATIONS, QUANTIFYING THE TRANSLATIONAL AND ROTATIONAL DIFFUSION OF ANISOTROPIC COLLOIDS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND TRANSPORT AND MICRORHEOLOGY IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS, AND DEVELOPING COMPUTER SIMULATIONS OF COLLOIDAL PARTICLES IN EXTERNAL FIELDS. THESE PROJECTS WILL LEAD TO NEW ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES IN MICRORHEOLOGY AND OPTICAL MICROSCOPY AND WILL ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF INKS FOR 3D PRINTING.
