HSI INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION PROJECT: RETENTION AND ACHIEVEMENT FOR INTRODUCTORY STEM ENGLISH LEARNERS (RAISE) -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS TRACK 3 INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION PROJECT (ITP) AIMS TO IMPROVE RETENTION IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS (STEM) PROGRAMS WITH A LANGUAGE AND CULTURE-FOCUSED APPROACH IN INTRODUCTORY STEM COURSES, IN WHICH THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL BOTTLENECKS TO STUDENT RETENTION IN STEM DISCIPLINES NATION-WIDE. ALL STEM STUDENTS FACE CHALLENGES IN DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC ACADEMIC LANGUAGE, WHICH IS DEFINED AS UNIQUE LANGUAGE USED BY PRACTITIONERS TO COMMUNICATE IN AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE AND IS DIFFERENT FROM EVERYDAY USAGE OF LANGUAGE. ACADEMIC LANGUAGE IS ALSO AN ADDED CHALLENGE TO ENGLISH LEARNERS. LANGUAGE-CONSCIOUS TEACHING IS A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE WAY TO SUPPORT STUDENT SUCCESS AND IS COMMON IN K-12 EDUCATION BUT NOT IN HIGHER EDUCATION. THIS WORK WILL CONTRIBUTE TO UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE-CENTRIC PEDAGOGY IN STEM STUDENT SUCCESS AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL. THE NATION?S DEMOGRAPHICS INDICATE THAT THE NUMBER OF MULTILINGUAL AND ENGLISH LEARNER STUDENTS IS EVER-INCREASING, AND PRELIMINARY INQUIRY SUGGESTS THAT ENGLISH LEARNERS REPRESENT 15-30% OF INCOMING FRESHMEN. THUS, THE BROADER IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT IS THAT IT WILL HELP DEVELOP A STEM WORKFORCE THAT REFLECTS THIS DIVERSITY AND LEVERAGES ITS MULTILINGUAL ASSETS. THIS WILL BE ESSENTIAL FOR THE UNITED STATES TO STAY COMPETITIVE IN AN INCREASINGLY MULTICULTURAL WORLD. UPON SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT, THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES ARE: (1) STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION WILL IMPROVE IN INTRODUCTORY STEM COURSES; (2) CULTURAL AND PEDAGOGICAL SHIFTS WILL OCCUR AMONG FACULTY TO ACCOUNT FOR AND CELEBRATE THE UNIQUE LANGUAGE SKILLS OF OUR STUDENTS; (3) INSTITUTIONS WILL BE MORE COGNIZANT OF SUPPORTING AND PLANNING FOR THE SUCCESS OF ENGLISH LEARNERS AND MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO (1) ESTABLISH A FACULTY AND STAFF LEARNING COMMUNITY AROUND STEM ACADEMIC LANGUAGE CHALLENGES AND EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS. THE CULTURE AND CONTEXTS OF THE INCOMING CLASS WILL BE EXPLORED THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS THAT ARE MAJOR FEEDER CAMPUSES TO THE UNIVERSITY; (2) DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT BEST PRACTICES FOR COLLECTING INSTITUTIONAL DATA ON ENGLISH LEARNERS; (3) DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT INTERVENTIONS TARGETING STEM ACADEMIC LANGUAGE CHALLENGES. IT IS EXPECTED THAT SOME STEM-FOCUSED ENGLISH LEARNER INTERVENTIONS DESIGNED FOR K-12 PROGRAMS CAN BE EFFECTIVELY ADAPTED AND ADOPTED FOR UNIVERSITY-LEVEL INTRODUCTORY STEM COURSES TO BENEFIT ALL STUDENTS, INCLUDING ENGLISH LEARNERS. PROMISING INTERVENTIONS WILL UNDERGO MORE FORMAL EVALUATION AND INVESTIGATION FOR EFFICACY; (4) RESEARCH STUDENT AND FACULTY ENGAGEMENT IN STEM ACADEMIC LANGUAGE. HOW STUDENTS ENGAGE WITH STEM DISCIPLINARY LANGUAGE, WHAT STEM FACULTY ATTITUDES TOWARDS TEACHING AND ENGAGING IN ACADEMIC LANGUAGE ARE, AND HOW THOSE ATTITUDES AFFECT STUDENT LEARNING WILL BE EXAMINED. RESULTS WILL BE BROADLY DISSEMINATED THROUGH PUBLICATION, PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND NETWORKS THROUGH THE LARGE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. THE HSI PROGRAM AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION AND BUILD CAPACITY AT HSIS. PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE HSI PROGRAM WILL ALSO GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO ACHIEVE THESE AIMS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

CREATING PATHWAYS TO COMPUTING CAREERS THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL AND ENGAGED LEARNING -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. OVER ITS FIVE-YEAR DURATION, THIS PROJECT WILL AWARD A TOTAL OF 150 SCHOLARSHIPS TO SUPPORT COHORTS OF 30 ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS EACH YEAR, WITH A DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED, WHO ARE PURSUING DEGREES IN COMPUTING AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY - SAN BERNARDINO. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO INVIGORATE COMPUTING EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA'S INLAND EMPIRE REGION BY CREATING PATHWAYS TO COMPUTING CAREERS. THE PEDAGOGICAL CHANGES TO THE INTRODUCTORY COMPUTING COURSES, SUPPORTED BY THIS AWARD, WILL BENEFIT MORE THAN 1,250 STUDENTS. FOUR OBJECTIVES WILL GUIDE THE PROJECT TEAM. FIRST IS TO INCREASE THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF LOW-INCOME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS. SECOND IS TO TRANSFORM THE INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING COURSES TO INCLUDE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND ACTIVE LEARNING PEDAGOGICAL TECHNIQUES. THIRD IS TO DEVELOP A SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM, AND FOURTH IS TO EXPAND AND SUSTAIN A QUARTERLY FORUM THAT BRINGS TOGETHER TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES, POLICYMAKERS, AND THOUGHT LEADERS, ENABLING STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN LOCAL COMMUNITY-BASED EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. THE RESEARCH COMPONENT OF THE PROJECT WILL ASSESS THE IMPACT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ON LOW-INCOME COMPUTING STUDENTS' RETENTION, ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND DEGREE COMPLETION. FURTHERMORE, IT WILL EXPLORE HOW ENGAGED LEARNING AND MENTORING INFLUENCE STUDENTS' INTEREST IN PURSUING RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AND CAREERS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF?S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. IT ALSO AIMS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE STEM WORKERS, AND TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, TRANSFER, GRADUATION, AND ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CAL-BRIDGE: A STATEWIDE INTERSEGMENTAL PARTNERSHIP CREATING A PATHWAY FOR CALIFORNIA UNDERGRADUATES TO THE PROFESSORIATE -THE MISSION OF THE CAL-BRIDGE PROGRAM IS TO DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY (URM) AND WOMEN STUDENTS COMPLETING PHD DEGREES IN STEM DISCIPLINES AND GOING ON TO JOIN THE STEM PROFESSORIATE AND TECHNICAL WORKFORCE LEADERSHIP. STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM ARE DESIGNATED AS CAL-BRIDGE SCHOLARS, AND JOIN A VIBRANT COHORT-BASED MENTORING AND UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM SPANNING A DIVERSE STATEWIDE NETWORK OF 10 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA (UC), 23 CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU) CAMPUSES, AND 116 CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE (CCC) CAMPUSES. WITH THE OVERALL CSU LEAD HOUSED AT CSU SAN BERNARDINO, AND THE UC AND OVERALL PROGRAM LEADERSHIP HOUSED AT UC IRVINE, A NETWORK OF NEARLY 300 CSU AND UC FACULTY SERVE AS MENTORS TO CAL-BRIDGE SCHOLARS IN THE FOUR STEM FIELDS OF PHYSICS, ASTRONOMY, COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS. APPROXIMATELY 150 CAL-BRIDGE SCHOLARS WILL JOIN THE PROGRAM OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, WITH AS MANY AS 30-40 MATRICULATING TO PHD PROGRAMS EACH YEAR. THE CAL-BRIDGE PROGRAM HAS BEEN RUNNING EFFECTIVELY AS A STATE-WIDE PROGRAM FOR 10 YEARS; A NEW NSF AWARD ALLOWS FOR THE SOLIDIFICATION OF THE PROGRAM IN ITS NEW FIELDS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS, AND FOR THE ENRICHMENT OF ITS EXTRA-CURRICULAR OFFERINGS AND SUPPORT STRUCTURES. THE CAL-BRIDGE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM SUPPORTS COLLEGE JUNIORS AND SENIORS AS THEY WORK TOWARD ENROLLMENT IN A PHD PROGRAM BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AS WELL AS INTENSIVE, SUSTAINED, JOINT MENTORING OF STUDENTS BY CSU AND UC FACULTY. THESE RESOURCES FACILITATE THE PERSISTENCE OF CAL-BRIDGE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARS IN COMPLETING THEIR BS DEGREE AND IN SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONING TO A STEM PHD PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM IDENTIFIES STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC POTENTIAL, USING RESEARCH-BASED CRITERIA DEVELOPED BY OTHER SUCCESSFUL BRIDGE. ONCE SELECTED, CAL-BRIDGE SCHOLARS BENEFIT FROM FIVE KEY ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM: 1. FULL NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIP AT THEIR CSU CAMPUS DURING THEIR JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARS OF COLLEGE. 2. TWO FACULTY MENTORS: ONE FROM A UC CAMPUS AND ONE FROM THEIR CSU CAMPUS, WITH JOINT MENTORING ON A BIWEEKLY BASIS. 3. EXTENSIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PARTICIPATION IN A COHORT OF ACADEMICALLY- MINDED PEERS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED BACKGROUNDS, VIA REGULAR IN-PERSON AND ONLINE WORKSHOPS. 4. SUPERVISED RESEARCH WITH UC FACULTY OR AT OTHER REU PROGRAMS DURING THE SUMMERS, AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT THEIR RESULTS AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES. 5. A STRONG NETWORK OF PEER AND NEAR-PEER MENTORING THAT PROVIDES A CRITICAL ADDITIONAL LEVEL OF SUPPORT ADDITIONAL GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE THAT UC CAL-BRIDGE MENTORS IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS, AND THAT UC PHD ADMISSION PROGRAMS DEVELOP MORE HOLISTIC ADMISSIONS PROCESSES THAT LEAD TO GREATER ACCEPTANCE OF STUDENTS FROM NON-TRADITIONAL BACKGROUNDS. D-ISN: CONSTRAINING ILLICIT DECISION MAKING WITHIN AND ACROSS DYNAMIC SUPPLY NETWORKS -THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS DISRUPTING OPERATIONS OF ILLICIT SUPPLY NETWORKS (D-ISN) RESEARCH STUDY IS TO DEVELOP AND EVALUATE AN INTEGRATED THEORY OF ILLICIT DECISION MAKING. THIS RESEARCH EXAMINES HOW, WHEN, AND WHY INDIVIDUALS CHOOSE TO ENGAGE IN LEGITIMATE VERSUS ILLICIT ACTIVITIES TO MAXIMIZE PROFITS OR GAIN A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE WITHIN THEIR INDUSTRY. USING A NETWORK APPROACH, THE PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS TO COMPLY WITH OR DISREGARD LAWS AND REGULATIONS AFFECT THE DECISIONS OF OTHER ACTORS WITHIN A SUPPLY NETWORK. THE FINDINGS WILL IDENTIFY TARGETED INTERVENTIONS THAT CAN BE ENACTED THROUGH LAWS, POLICIES, REGULATIONS, AND BUSINESS PRACTICES TO CONSTRAIN THE BENEFITS GAINED BY ACTORS ENGAGING IN ILLICIT ACTIVITY. THIS PROJECT SERVES THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ADVANCING NEW WAYS TO CREATE POLICIES AND PRACTICES TO SUPPORT NATIONAL PROSPERITY BY CONSTRAINING ILLICIT DECISION MAKING AND WILL PROMOTE THE PROGRESS OF SCIENCE TO ENCOURAGE NEW DIALOGUES AMONG STAKEHOLDERS TO FIND WAYS TO DISRUPT ILLICIT ACTIVITIES WITHIN A SUPPLY NETWORK. THE PROJECT TAKES A MULTIDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE, WITH PIS FROM THE FIELDS OF CRIMINOLOGY, BUSINESS AND SUPPLY CHAINS, AND OPERATIONS RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT USES A NETWORKED AGENT-BASED MODEL (NABM) TO SIMULATE ILLICIT DECISION MAKING AT THE TRANSACTION LEVEL AMONG A NETWORKED COMMUNITY OF COMPETING LEGITIMATE, CRIMINAL, AND ILLICIT-SUSCEPTIBLE ACTORS. APPLYING THEORIES OF COMPETITION, THE PROJECT UTILIZES THE RATIONAL CHOICE PERSPECTIVE OF OFFENDER DECISION MAKING WITHIN A UTILITY MAXIMIZATION FRAMEWORK TO MODEL THE COMPETITIVE DYNAMICS UNDERPINNING ILLICIT SUPPLY NETWORKS. THIS RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP INITIAL MODELS BASED ON CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MASSAGE THERAPY INDUSTRY, AND THE FINDINGS WILL BE EXTENDED IN APPLIED TO OTHER INDUSTRIES THAT ALSO INVOLVE ILLICIT SUPPLY NETWORKS, SUCH AS AGRICULTURE, PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS, AND COUNTERFEIT ITEMS. THIS PROJECT WILL EXPOSE TWO FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES ESSENTIAL FOR UNDERSTANDING AND DISRUPTING ILLICIT SUPPLY NETWORKS: (1) THE COMPETITIVE DYNAMICS AFFECTING CONSUMERS AND SUPPLIERS THAT DRIVE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES; AND (2) THE ROLE THAT CIVIL, CRIMINAL, AND FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS REGULATIONS PLAY IN SHIFTING MARKET CONDITIONS. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL ENGAGE WITH COLLABORATORS FROM ACADEMIA, INDUSTRY, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TO DEVELOP A GENERALIZABLE, DOMAIN-AGNOSTIC FRAMEWORK TO DIRECT ISN DISRUPTION STRATEGIES TO CONSTRAIN THE COST-BENEFIT CALCULATION OF POTENTIAL OFFENDERS. THE PROJECT WILL EDUCATE GRADUATE STUDENTS WITHIN A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENT WHO WILL BE CAPABLE OF ADDRESSING COMPLEX SOCIETAL ISSUES. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

OLDER ADULT SOCIAL PARTICIPATION, GENDER, AND COGNITIVE DECLINE - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT IDENTIFYING WAYS TO DELAY OR PREVENT COGNITIVE DECLINE AND DEMENTIA REMAINS A PRIORITY OF THE NIA. AS PART OF THIS WORK, THERE IS GROWING RECOGNITION THAT SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF THESE DISEASES. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS RESEARCH HAS PROVIDED LITTLE SPECIFICITY INTO HOW VARIOUS SOCIAL ACTIVITIES MAY DIFFERENTIALLY PREDICT COGNITIVE DECLINE. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN LITTLE INQUIRY INTO HOW OLDER ADULT SOCIAL PARTICIPATION OR ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH COGNITION MIGHT DIFFER BY GENDER. UNLIKE MANY STANDARD SURVEY ITEMS (E.G., HEALTH, EDUCATION), THERE IS INSUFFICIENT CONSISTENCY WITH HOW SOCIAL PARTICIPATION IS MEASURED IN SOCIAL SURVEYS AND UTILIZED IN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH. IN PARTICULAR, THE USE OF SOCIAL PARTICIPATION “SUMMARY MEASURES” (A) MAY OBSCURE DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN COGNITION AND UNDERLYING SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, AND (B) OFTEN INCLUDE ITEMS THAT ARE, ARGUABLY, NOT “SOCIAL PARTICIPATION” (E.G., MEETING WITH FAMILY MEMBERS). THIS HAS RESULTED IN TWO LIMITATIONS: ONE, IT IS NOT KNOWN WHICH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES—AND TO WHAT EXTENT THESE ACTIVITIES—ARE DRIVING ANY ASSOCIATIONS. TWO, IT IS DIFFICULT TO COMPARE RESULTS AMONG SIMILAR STUDIES, RAISING CONCERNS ABOUT VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY. THIS PROJECT HAS THREE AIMS. ONE, WE WILL INVESTIGATE HOW ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND OLDER ADULT COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING DIFFER BY SOCIAL ACTIVITY. TWO, WE WILL IDENTIFY MECHANISMS THAT LINK PARTICULAR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TO COGNITIVE HEALTH. THREE, WE WILL INVESTIGATE TO WHAT EXTENT ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND OLDER ADULT COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING DIFFER BY GENDER. TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS, WE WILL UTILIZE FOUR LARGE NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE LONGITUDINAL STUDIES OF OLDER ADULTS. DR. ERIC VOGELSANG, PI, HAS AN ESTABLISHED PUBLICATION RECORD OF OLDER ADULT SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND HEALTH RESEARCH. THE COLLABORATORS ON THIS PROJECT HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING RESEARCH, MENTORING, AND NIH GRANTS. WORKING AT A “SUPER” HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION (CSU-SAN BERNARDINO), THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE TO STUDENTS WITH LIMITED OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL PRODUCE THREE BENEFITS. ONE, IT WILL INFORM PATIENTS, PRACTITIONERS, AND POLICY MAKERS LOOKING TO DELAY OR PREVENT THE ONSET OF COGNITIVE DECLINE. BUILDING ON ONGOING COLLABORATION BETWEEN CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE, THE INITIATIVE WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FLEXIBLE ENTRY POINTS INTO AI CAREERS THROUGH CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT, INDUSTRY-INFORMED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, AND FACULTY MENTORING. THE PROGRAM WILL BE OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND INSTITUTIONS. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: (1) BUILD NEW AI MINOR AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THEORETICAL AND APPLIED SKILLS THROUGH CAREER-RELEVANT CURRICULUM DESIGN AND PROJECT-BASED COURSEWORK; (2) ESTABLISH AN AI HELP DESK TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND SMALL BUSINESSES BY OFFERING AI CONSULTATIONS AND STUDENT-LED SOLUTIONS TO REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS; (3) ENGAGE STUDENTS FROM A RANGE OF DISCIPLINES, INCLUDING NON-COMPUTING MAJORS, THROUGH MENTORING, FACULTY-GUIDED RESEARCH, AND COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS; AND (4) SUSTAIN PATHWAYS INTO AI BY INTEGRATING FORMAL INSTRUCTION WITH INFORMAL LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE HOW APPLIED AI LEARNING EXPERIENCES INFLUENCE STUDENT OUTCOMES AND MOTIVATION. A MIXED-METHODS RESEARCH DESIGN WILL BE USED, COMBINING SURVEY DATA, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE METRICS, INTERVIEWS, AND FOCUS GROUPS TO ASSESS OUTCOMES. FACULTY TEAMS WILL ALSO EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF CURRICULUM DESIGN AND COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND LEARNING. EARLY LIFE EXERCISE EFFECTS ON TENDON MATURATION AND RESISTANCE TO LATE LIFE TENDINOPATHIES - PROJECT SUMMARY TENDONS SERVE MULTIPLE CRITICAL ROLES IN LOCOMOTION, AND FUNCTIONALITY CAN BE COMPROMISED BY THE EFFECTS OF AGING, DISUSE, AND TENDINOPATHY. FOR THE AGING POPULATION, THE COMBINATION OF THESE FACTORS GREATLY REDUCES MOBILITY AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE LIKELIHOOD OF FALLING. MANY STRUCTURAL CHANGES THAT OCCUR WITH AGE AND/OR TRAINING IN TENDON HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO IMPACT TENDON MECHANICS, INCLUDING CHANGES IN CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA (CSA), STRAIGHTENING OF COLLAGEN FIBRILS, AND INCREASE IN ADVANCED GLYCATION END-PRODUCTS (AGES). EXERCISE CAN MITIGATE SOME OF THESE AGE-RELATED DECLINES, BUT PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT THE ‘CORE’ OF TENDONS IS FULLY FORMED BY SKELETAL MATURITY AND THUS THE CAPACITY OF TENDON TO RESPOND TO LOAD IS LIMITED POST-MATURATION [16,17]. DESPITE THIS DOCUMENTED PHENOMENON, THE RESPONSE OF TENDON TO LOADING IN EARLY LIFE TENDON IS LARGELY UNKNOWN, NOR ITS CONSEQUENCES FOR LATER LIFE TENDON PERFORMANCE. THIS PROPOSED RESEARCH AIMS TO ADDRESS TWO KEY AND RELATED GAPS IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF ONTOGENETIC INTERACTIONS WITH TENDON LOADING—HOW TENDON LOADING IN EARLY LIFE IMPACTS LATER LIFE TENDON MECHANICS, AND HOW EARLY LIFE TENDON ADAPTATION TO LOAD DIFFERS (IF AT ALL) FROM MATURE TENDON. WE WILL TEST THE POTENTIAL FOR EARLY LIFE EXERCISE TO PROTECT AGAINST LATE-LIFE TENDINOPATHY AND IDENTIFY STRUCTURAL MECHANISMS CONTRIBUTING TO DIFFERING TENDON FUNCTIONAL MORPHOLOGY BETWEEN JUVENILE-LOADED TENDONS AND ADULT-LOADED TENDONS USING A 10-WEEK EXERCISE TREATMENT IN A MOUSE MODEL. TENDONS WILL BE HARVESTED AND UNDERGO MECHANICAL TESTING BOTH IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE TRAINING AS WELL AS 12 MONTHS LATER TO TEST THE ABILITY OF EARLY LIFE EXERCISE TO ENHANCE LATE LIFE TENDON QUALITY. THE FORMATION OF THE TENDON CORE AND ITS RESPONSE TO LOADING IN EARLY LIFE WILL BE ASSAYED USING HISTOLOGY AND STABLE ISOTOPES, THUS CAPTURING THE REGIONAL RESPONSE OF TENDON TO LOADING AT THESE LIFE STAGES.

UNRAVELING NEURAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF HUNGER AND SATIETY IN INDIVIDUALS WITH AND WITHOUT OBESITY IMMERSED IN VIRTUAL REALITY FOOD STIMULI - ABSTRACT OBESITY IS A GLOBAL HEALTH CRISIS LINKED TO NUMEROUS COMORBIDITIES AND A SUBSTANTIAL ECONOMIC BURDEN. TRADITIONAL METHODS FOR INVESTIGATING NEURAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO FOOD CUES, ESPECIALLY IN DIFFERING STATES OF HUNGER AND SATIETY, HAVE YIELDED INCONSISTENT FINDINGS, PARTICULARLY IN INDIVIDUALS WITH OBESITY. TO ADDRESS THESE GAPS, THIS STUDY EMPLOYS AN INNOVATIVE, MULTI-MODAL APPROACH THAT INTEGRATES FUNCTIONAL NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (FNIRS), PHYSIOLOGICAL AND HORMONAL MONITORING, AND SUBJECTIVE HUNGER/SATIETY RATINGS WITHIN AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) ENVIRONMENT. THIS DESIGN ENABLES ECOLOGICALLY VALID, STATE-DEPENDENT ASSESSMENT OF FOOD CUE REACTIVITY IN BOTH NORMAL-WEIGHT INDIVIDUALS AND THOSE WITH OBESITY. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO IMPROVE THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF OBESITY AND RELATED EATING DISORDERS BY IDENTIFYING RELIABLE NEURAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL, AND BIOMARKERS LINKED TO CENTRAL CONTROL OF ENERGY INTAKE. THE CENTRAL OBJECTIVE IS TO DETERMINE HOW THESE MULTIMODAL RESPONSES DIFFER BY METABOLIC STATE (HUNGER VS. SATIETY) AND WEIGHT STATUS (NORMAL-WEIGHT VS WITH OBESITY). OUR CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT EACH GROUP WILL SHOW DISTINCT PATTERNS OF BRAIN ACTIVATION, PARTICULARLY IN REGIONS INVOLVED IN REWARD PROCESSING AND COGNITIVE CONTROL, ALONGSIDE DIVERGENT AUTONOMIC AND HORMONAL RESPONSES, REFLECTING ALTERED MECHANISMS OF ENERGY INTAKE REGULATION. THIS HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED THROUGH TWO SPECIFIC AIMS: (1) TO ASSESS WITHIN-SUBJECT NEURAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL, AND HORMONAL RESPONSES TO FOOD STIMULI IN NORMAL-WEIGHT INDIVIDUALS UNDER HUNGER AND SATIETY; AND (2) TO APPLY THE SAME PROTOCOL TO INDIVIDUALS WITH OBESITY AND COMPARE THEIR PROFILES TO THE CONTROL GROUP. THIS STUDY IS SIGNIFICANT IN ITS POTENTIAL TO UNCOVER BIOMARKERS THAT DIFFERENTIATE HEALTHY AND DISORDERED EATING REGULATIONS, THEREBY GUIDING FUTURE INTERVENTION STRATEGIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE UNDERGRADUATES AT A MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION WITH MEANINGFUL, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN NEUROIMAGING, PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY, AND TRANSLATIONAL HEALTH RESEARCH, SUPPORTING THEIR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

IMPACT OF PREADOLESCENT PSYCHOSTIMULANTS ON NEUROPHYSIOLOGY AND SLEEP/WAKE DISTURBANCES - PROJECT SUMMARY CHILDREN WITH ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD), WHETHER TAKING STIMULANT MEDICATIONS OR NOT, EXPERIENCE MORE SLEEP PROBLEMS THAN THEIR PEERS. THESE NIGHTTIME SLEEP PROBLEMS OFTEN LEAD TO DAYTIME SLEEPINESS, WHICH IS LIKELY TO EXACERBATE SOME OF THE NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR EFFECTS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH ADHD. SINCE THE MOST COMMON TREATMENT FOR PEDIATRIC ADHD IS PSYCHOSTIMULANT MEDICATION, METHYLPHENIDATE (MPH), THERE HAS BEEN A LONG-STANDING INTEREST IN WHETHER THIS TYPE OF MEDICATION RESULTS IN EXACERBATED SLEEP DISTURBANCES AND THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF SLEEPING DISORDERS LATER IN ADULTHOOD. DESPITE ONGOING INTEREST IN THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN STIMULANT USE AND SLEEP IN CHILDREN, THERE IS A LACK OF EVIDENCE REGARDING THE CAUSAL EFFECTS OF MPH ON THE SLEEP FUNCTIONING OF CHILDREN WITH ADHD. THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED GRANT IS TO BREAK DOWN THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP THAT EARLY PSYCHOSTIMULANT EXPOSURE AND ADHD CAN HAVE ON SLEEP NEUROPHYSIOLOGY AND WHETHER THIS EFFECT IS UNIQUE TO DEVELOPMENTAL EXPOSURE AND PERSISTS INTO ADULTHOOD. THE FIRST AIM OF THIS GRANT WILL STUDY THE EFFECTS OF MPH ON SLEEP ARCHITECTURE AND NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY (SLEEP EEG AND WAKING ERPS) IN SPONTANEOUSLY HYPERTENSIVE RATS (SHR), A WELL-ESTABLISHED AND VALIDATED MODEL OF ADHD, COMPARED TO THE INBRED WISTAR-KYOTO RAT CONTROL STRAIN. EEG CAN BE USED IN RODENTS TO PROVIDE A TRANSLATIONAL MODEL OF NOT ONLY SLEEP ARCHITECTURE AND NEUROACTIVITY, BUT ERPS CAN BE USED AS A PREDICTING BIOMARKER FOR NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. STUDY 1A WILL INVESTIGATE EFFECTS OF MPH ON SLEEP PATTERNS AND EEG/ERP ACTIVITY IN PREADOLESCENT ADHD RAT MODEL OF BOTH SEXES. STUDY 1B WILL DETERMINE WHETHER THESE EFFECTS OF PREADOLESCENT METHYLPHENIDATE ON SLEEP PATTERNS AND EEG ACTIVITY WILL PERSIST INTO ADULTHOOD. THE SECOND AIM WILL DETERMINE IF PREADOLESCENT MPH ALTERS CIRCADIAN RHYTHM AND LIGHT/DARK ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN IN ADHD RAT MODELS OF BOTH SEXES. STUDY 2A INVESTIGATES HOW CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS AND LIGHT/DARK ACTIVITY PATTERNS CAN CHANGE ACROSS THE LIFESPAN IN THE SHR COMPARED TO THE WISTAR-KYOTO CONTROL STRAIN. THIS STUDY WILL ALSO DETERMINE WHETHER BEHAVIORAL MEASURES COMMON IN ADHD (E.G. INATTENTION, HYPERACTIVITY, DISINHIBITION) MAY CORRELATE WITH SLEEP QUALITY AND QUANTITY THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN. STUDY 2B WILL INVESTIGATE HOW PREADOLESCENT PSYCHOSTIMULANT MEDICATION IN SHR AND CONTROL STRAIN RATS CAN ALTER THESE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM, LIGHT/DARK ACTIVITY, AND BEHAVIORAL MEASURES THROUGHOUT DEVELOPMENT AND INTO ADULTHOOD.

BRC-BIO: USING ANALYSIS OF HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY SAMPLES TO ELUCIDATE MECHANISMS OF ALTITUDINAL RANGE EXPANSION BY PLANTS -SPECIES DISTRIBUTIONS CHANGES OVER TIME AND SPACE, OFTEN IN ASSOCIATION WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, ENVIRONMENTS ARE RAPIDLY AND DRAMATICALLY CHANGING. THESE CHANGES HAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR PLANTS. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE AND THE ABILITY OF PLANTS TO RESPOND TO SUCH CHANGES WILL DETERMINE THEIR LONG-TERM FATE. ONE WAY PLANTS MAY RESPOND TO CLIMATE CHANGE IS MOVING TO BETTER SUITED ENVIRONMENTS. THUS, RANGE-SHIFTS MAY BE AN IMPORTANT COPING MECHANISM FOR PLANT POPULATIONS WHEN ENVIRONMENTS CHANGE. THIS PROJECT USES NON-NATIVE POPULATIONS OF THE MODEL SPECIES ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA TO UNDERSTAND THE EVOLUTIONARY MECHANISMS BEHIND ALTITUDINAL RANGE EXPANSION. NON-NATIVE SPECIES ARE IDEAL, NON-PLANNED EXPERIMENTS USEFUL IN UNDERSTANDING RESPONSES TO NEW ENVIRONMENTS. THIS WORK WILL LEVERAGE HISTORICAL SAMPLES STORED IN HERBARIA, TO DIRECTLY EXPLORE CHANGES OVER TIME. HISTORICAL SAMPLES WILL ALSO BE COMBINED WITH SAMPLES FROM CONTEMPORARY POPULATIONS. TOGETHER, THESE SAMPLES WILL BE USED TO EXPLORE ADAPTATION PATTERNS ALONG ALTITUDINAL GRADIENTS. INTEGRATED WITH THE RESEARCH IS A LONG-TERM COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO (CSUSB) HERBARIUM. THIS PROGRAM TARGETS CAMPUS STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND K-12 STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM AIMS TO SHOWCASE THE RICHNESS AND ECOLOGICAL RELEVANCE OF THE LOCAL PLANT COMMUNITY. THE HERBARIUM ALSO STRIVES TO BRING AWARENESS OF THE CULTURAL RELEVANCE OF PLANTS. FINALLY, THE RESEARCH DATA WILL BE INCORPORATED IN A COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE) TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. TYPICALLY, INFERENCES ABOUT PAST ECO-EVOLUTIONARY EVENTS ARE BASED ON EXISTING POPULATIONS. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS OFFERS ONLY A SNAPSHOT OF LONG-TERM PROCESSES. HISTORICAL HERBARIA SAMPLES ALLOW DIRECT OBSERVATION OF CHANGES OVER TIME AND SPACE. THIS PROJECT USES HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY SAMPLES TO STUDY THE ECO-EVOLUTIONARY MECHANISMS OVER ~150 YEARS OF ALTITUDINAL MOVEMENT IN CALIFORNIA BY ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA. DATA FROM HERBARIA RECORDS SHOW THAT A. THALIANA STAYED AT LOW ALTITUDES FOR APPROXIMATELY 40 YEARS. SUBSEQUENTLY, IN THE NEXT 60 YEARS, A. THALIANA SPREAD TO ELEVATIONS ABOVE 2,000M. THESE MOVEMENT PATTERNS, ALONG WITH ITS STATUS AS MODEL ORGANISM, MAKES A. THALIANA GREAT TO INVESTIGATE VARIOUS QUESTIONS. INCLUDING, HOW MUCH OF THE UPWARD ELEVATIONAL SHIFT IS DUE TO ADAPTATION? AND, WHICH TRAITS WERE IMPORTANT? TWO COMPLEMENTARY APPROACHES WILL BE USED TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. FIRST, INVESTIGATION OF HISTORICAL A. THALIANA SAMPLES WILL IDENTIFY TEMPORAL CHANGES IN DISTRIBUTION. PARALLEL STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY POPULATIONS ACROSS ALTITUDINAL GRADIENTS WILL EXPLORE PATTERNS OF LOCAL ADAPTATION. WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING DATA OF BOTH HERBARIA AND CONTEMPORARY SAMPLES WILL EXPLORE WHAT GENETIC CHANGES OCCURRED ACROSS TIME AND SPACE. FURTHER, THE DATA WILL BE USED TO TEST FOR SIGNATURES OF ADAPTATION. GENOMIC DATA WILL ALSO INFORM GENOME ASSOCIATION STUDIES. DATA ON FITNESS-RELATED TRAITS WILL IDENTIFY MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES ACROSS TIME (HISTORICAL SAMPLES) AND SPACE (CONTEMPORARY SAMPLES) AND TEST IF THEY ARE INDICATIVE OF ALTITUDE ADAPTATION. QUANTITATIVE DATA WILL BE COMBINED WITH GENOMIC DATA. TOGETHER, THESE DATA WILL BE USED TO INVESTIGATE ADAPTATION AND DETERMINE HOW MUCH PHENOTYPIC PLASTICITY IS ENVIRONMENTALLY VS. GENETICALLY CONTROLLED. THESE NASA LINKS WILL BE USED TO STRENGTHEN SPECIFIC SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) PROGRAMS AT CSUSB AND COD BY A COHERENT APPROACH INCLUDING AUGMENTATION OF CURRENT CURRICULA DEVELOPMENT OF COMPLETELY NEW CURRICULA THAT REFLECT NEW IDEAS IN SCIENTIFIC THOUGHT CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH AND MODERN EDUCATIONAL METHODS. ADDITIONALLY A MORE SEAMLESS TRANSITION FROM COD TO CSUSB FOR STEM STUDENTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED.AN INNOVATIVE FOUR-WEEK INTENSIVE ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE WILL INSPIRE MOTIVATE EXCITE AND INCREASE THE CONFIDENCE OF AT LEAST 24 TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME MAKING THEM MORE COMPETITIVE FOR NATIONAL STUDENT CO-OP/INTERNSHIP/RESEARCH PROGRAMS SUCH AS NASA-MUST OR NASA-USRP. THE ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE WILL OCCUR OVER THE WINTER BREAK COINCIDING WITH APPLICATION AVAILABILITY FOR MOST OF THESE NATIONAL PROGRAMS AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE INTERSESSION PROGRAM WILL APPLY FOR AT LEAST THREE PROGRAMS. MATERIALS ARE CRITICAL TO MOST NASA PROGRAMS AND MISSIONS. THE STUDY OF MATERIALS IS A PROGRESSIVE SUBJECT AND PERVASIVE IN ITS APPLICATION; IT OFFERS MANY EXCITING AND COMPELLING EDUCATIONAL ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC OPPORTUNITIES WHILE REQUIRING A DIVERSE STEM BACKGROUND. THIS NEW APPROACH WILL REQUIRE CHANGES THAT WILL RIPPLE THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM. CONSEQUENTLY WE PROPOSE CURRICULUM CHANGES TO THE PRE ENGINEERING COURSES (SUCH AS INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONICS) ENGINEERING PHYSICS SEQUENCES SUCH AS THE ONES OFFERED AT BOTH CSUSB ANDCOD AND MODIFICATION OF THE MATERIALS COURSE AT CSUSB (PHYSICS 318) AND THE CORRESPONDING MATERIALS COURSE AT COD. MATERIALS IS A REQUIRED COURSE FOR CSUSB'S APPLIED PHYSICS AND THE NEW COMPUTER ENGINEERING MAJOR. MICROBIOME COMPOSITION AND FUNCTION CONTRIBUTES TO COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT AND NEUROINFLAMMATION IN PARKINSON?S DISEASE - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IS A COMMON NON-MOTOR SYMPTOM AMONG INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE (PD). TRADITIONALLY, COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IS THOUGHT TO REFLECT DISRUPTIONS IN DOPAMINERGIC FRONTAL-STRIATAL SYSTEMS. HOWEVER, THE CURRENT CONCEPTUALIZATION DOES NOT THOROUGHLY EXPLAIN THE HETEROGENEOUS PROFILES OR TRAJECTORIES OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN PD; SUGGESTING THAT ALTERNATIVE MECHANISMS MAY CONTRIBUTE TO COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS. IDENTIFICATION OF ALTERNATIVE MECHANISMS OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT MAY LEAD TO BETTER PROGNOSTIC PREDICTION AND YIELD NOVEL TREATMENT TARGETS. THE GUT IS IMPLICATED AS A SITE OF EARLY PATHOLOGY IN PD. EARLY SIGNS OF PD PATHOLOGY (ALPHA SYNUCLEIN AND LEWY BODY AGGREGATES) ARE DETECTED IN THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT YEARS BEFORE MOTOR SYMPTOMS MANIFEST. RECENT STUDIES PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH PD HAVE AN ALTERED GUT-BACTERIAL COMPOSITION (TERMED DYSBIOSIS) RELATIVE TO CONTROLS. TO DATE, DYSBIOSIS IS LINKED TO MORE SEVERE MOTOR SYMPTOMS AND CERTAIN NON-MOTOR SYMPTOMS (CONSTIPATION, REM BEHAVIORAL SLEEP DISORDER) IN PD, BUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYSBIOSIS AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT REMAINS UNKNOWN. ANIMAL STUDIES SUPPORT THE HYPOTHESIS THAT MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION PLAY A DIRECT ROLE IN COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. GERM FREE (GF) MICE DEMONSTRATE DEFICITS IN COGNITION. SPECIFICALLY, FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT A DISRUPTED GUT- MICROBIAL ENVIRONMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH ELEVATED STRESS HORMONES MAY CREATE AN IMBALANCE OF PRO- INFLAMMATORY VS. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES THAT INDUCES POTENTIALLY REVERSIBLE COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS. IN HUMAN STUDIES AMONG INDIVIDUALS WITH PD, NEUROINFLAMMATORY MARKERS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. HOWEVER, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYSBIOSIS, NEURAL INFLAMMATION AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING REMAINS UNKNOWN. THIS MODEL HAS INCREDIBLE CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS, AS MICROBIOTA DYSBIOSIS MAY REPRESENT A REVERSIBLE RISK FACTOR FOR COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL EXAMINE THE HYPOTHESIS THAT DYSBIOSIS CONTRIBUTES TO INCREASED NEUROINFLAMMATION AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION/FUNCTION, NEUROINFLAMMATORY MARKERS AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING WILL BE EXAMINED IN 100 PARTICIPANTS WITH PD. ANALYSES OF MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION/FUNCTION WILL EXAMINE ABUNDANCE OF AMPLICON SEQUENCE VARIANTS (ASVS; 16S), BACTERIAL SPECIES/STRAINS (METAGENOMICS), MICROBIAL GENES, AND FUNCTIONAL PATHWAYS. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION/FUNCTION WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH INFLAMMATORY MARKERS (E.G. INTERLEUKIN-6, TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR-ALPHA, C-REACTIVE PROTEIN) AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT.

A TRANSMEMBRANE RAB GTPASE ACCELERATING PROTEIN TARGETED TO PEROXISOMES - PROJECT SUMMARY UNDERSTANDING HOW CELLS ADAPT TO STRESS AND REPAIR DAMAGE IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST PRIORITIES IN CELL BIOLOGY AND HEALTH RESEARCH. THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER) IS A KEY SOURCE OF LIPID AND PROTEINS FOR BUILDING AND MAINTAINING SEVERAL ORGANELLES IN CELLS, AND IN RESPONSE TO STIMULI IT IS CAPABLE OF DIRECTING RESOURCES INTO AN ASSORTMENT OF TRANSPORT PATHWAYS. THE SIGNALING PROTEIN YPT1/RAB1 IS A RAB GTPASE (RAB) THAT PLAYS ESSENTIAL ROLES IN HOW THE ER DIRECTS RESOURCES AND EXECUTES QUALITY CONTROL OF DAMAGED ORGANELLES INCLUDING MITOCHONDRIA AND PEROXISOMES. OUR LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS FOR HOW LIPID AND PROTEIN CARGOS ARE ROUTED AND RE-ROUTED TO SPECIFIC ITINERARIES IN RESPONSE TO CELLULAR STIMULI AND STRESSES, WHICH WILL INFORM DEVELOPMENT OF TARGETED THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS TO ADDRESS DISEASES. WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE GTPASE ACCELERATING PROTEIN GYP8, AN EVOLUTIONARILY CONSERVED BUT POORLY UNDERSTOOD NEGATIVE REGULATOR OF YPT1/RAB1 SIGNALING, LOCALIZES TO THE ER, PEROXISOMES AND MITOCHONDRIA AND IMPINGES ON YPT1 SIGNALING. OUR CENTRAL HYPOTHESES ARE THAT GYP8 FUNCTIONS TO MODULATE YPT1/RAB1 SIGNALING IN THE EARLY SECRETORY PATHWAY (ER) AND AT NON-SECRETORY MEMBRANES (PEROXISOMES AND MITOCHONDRIA) THAT ARE SUBJECT TO FREQUENT DAMAGE AND QUALITY CONTROL VIA YPT1/RAB1-DEPENDENT SELECTIVE AUTOPHAGY. ALSO, SINCE GYP8 LOCALIZES TO ORGANELLES THAT COMMONLY TETHER/DOCK TO EXCHANGE MATERIALS IN ESSENTIAL METABOLIC PATHWAYS, WE PREDICT THAT GYP8 REGULATES RAB-DEPENDENT TETHERING INTERACTIONS, PARTICULARLY AMONG ORGANELLES SPECIALIZED FOR LIPID STORAGE AND METABOLISM. TO TEST OUR CENTRAL HYPOTHESES AND ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF SEVERAL MEMBRANE BIOGENESIS PATHWAYS THAT ORIGINATE AT THE ER, WE WILL PURSUE THESE SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) IDENTIFY INTRA- AND EXTRA-GENIC FACTORS THAT CONTROL THE SUBCELLULAR ITINERARY AND ACTIVITY OF GYP8; 2) DETERMINE TARGET RAB GTPASE(S) REGULATED BY GYP8 IN THE SECRETORY PATHWAY; AND 3) DEFINE THE ROLE OF GYP8 IN REGULATING PEROXISOMAL AND MITOCHONDRIAL DYNAMICS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS INNOVATIVE BOTH FOR AREA OF FOCUS AND TECHNICAL APPROACH. WHILE YPT1/RAB1 SIGNALING CONTROLS MULTIPLE TRANSPORT PATHWAYS ESSENTIAL TO CELLULAR HEALTH, UNDERSTANDING OF WHERE AND WHEN SIGNAL MUST BE TERMINATED TO ACCOMPLISH EACH OF ITS ROLES IS PARTICULARLY INCOMPLETE. THE EXPERIMENTAL PLAN COMBINES GOLD STANDARD BIOCHEMICAL AND IMAGING TECHNIQUES IN ORGANELLE AND VESICULAR TRANSPORT (ENZYME-COUPLED KINETIC TRANSPORT ASSAYS AND 3D ELECTRON TOMOGRAPHY) WITH SYSTEMS BIOLOGY APPROACHES (SYNTHETIC GENE ARRAY AND AFFINITY CAPTURE MASS SPECTROMETRY PROTEOMICS). THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE DEFINING HOW YPT1/RAB1 IS REGULATED TO SUPPORT AND EXERCISE QUALITY CONTROL OF ER, MITOCHONDRIA AND PEROXISOMES IS FOUNDATIONAL TO UNDERSTANDING ASPECTS OF CARDIOVASCULAR, NEURODEGENERATIVE AND METABOLIC DISORDERS.

VALIDITY OF THE ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING SATISFACTION ASSESSMENT (EISA) - THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN BERNARDINO (CSUSB), IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MEDICAL BRANCH (UTMB) AND KEY STAKEHOLDERS, IN THE COURSE OF THIS THREE-YEAR PROJECT, WILL DEVELOP AND VALIDATE A SELF-USE QUESTIONNAIRE AND USERS MANUAL TO HELP PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TO SELECT THE MOST USEFUL INTERNET-CONNECTED ASSISTIVE DEVICE FOR EVERYDAY FUNCTIONING. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY AND QUALITY OF FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATIONS AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ACROSS DISABILITY POPULATIONS BY FURTHER IMPROVING AND VALIDATING THE EISA 1.0, THE ONLY EXISTING CLINICAL QUESTIONNAIRE FOR INTERNET-CONNECTED ASSISTIVE DEVICES. THE OBJECTIVES ARE: 1) TO BOLSTER THE CONTENT VALIDITY OF EISA 1.0; 2) TO CONDUCT COGNITIVE INTERVIEWING FOR EISA 1.0 ITEM AND DIRECTION IMPROVEMENT; 3) TO DEVELOP THE EISA 2.0 PROTOTYPE AND USER MANUAL; AND 4) TO VALIDATE THE EISA 2.0 THEORETICAL CONSTRUCT WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH A VISUAL AND MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT. THE OVERARCHING MISSION OF THIS CAPACITY BUILDING FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS (CBSFS) PROJECT AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO (CSUSB) IS TO BUILD CAPACITY IN SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS AMONG DIVERSE PROFESSIONALS REFLECTIVE OF THE COMMUNITY IN CALIFORNIA'S RIVERSIDE AND SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES, THE INLAND EMPIRE. THE PROJECT HAS INTEGRATED FOUR EDUCATIONAL NEED AREA STRATEGIES TO IDENTIFY THREE COORDINATED CAPACITY BUILDING GOALS IN FNA EDUCATION. TO ACHIEVE A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH, THE PROJECT INCORPORATES FACULTY CAPACITY BUILDING IN SFSS, FOSTERS COMMUNITY WITH AND CAPACITY AMONG FNA PROFESSIONALS IN OUR GEOGRAPHIC AREA, AND TRAINS THE NEXT GENERATION OF FNA PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING CURRICULUM DESIGN FOR THE CREATION OF A NEW UNDERGRADUATE MINOR IN SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS AND 4 NEW COURSES. IMPROVING THE RELIABILITY OF EYE TRACKING TO DIAGNOSE CONCUSSION. - PROJECT SUMMARY / ABSTRACT ALTHOUGH CONCUSSION OR MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (MTBI) AFFECTS MORE THAN A MILLION OF AMERICANS EACH YEAR, AND REPRESENTS A GREAT SOCIETAL BURDEN, DIAGNOSIS IS STILL DIFFICULT, AND RELIABLE BIOMARKERS ARE STILL LACKING. THE LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO DEVELOP MEASURABLE PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS THAT DIFFER BETWEEN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS, AND THOSE WHO SUSTAINED AN MTBI. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE IN THIS APPLICATION IS TO INCREASE THE RELIABILITY OF USING EYE-MOVEMENTS TO DIAGNOSE CONCUSSION. CIRCUITS IN THE BRAIN, DEVOTED TO VISION, VESTIBULAR OR OCULOMOTOR FUNCTION ARE SO OMNIPRESENT IN THE BRAIN THAT ALMOST ANY BLOW TO THE HEAD AFFECTS SIGHT AND EYE MOVEMENTS. THEREFORE, MANY RESEARCHERS AGREE THAT EYE TRACKING TO MONITOR OCULOMOTOR BEHAVIOR SHOWS GREAT POTENTIAL OF REVEALING MTBI. RESULTS FROM STUDIES, USING EYE MOVEMENTS AS A BIOMARKER TO PREDICT CONCUSSION, ARE ENCOURAGING, ALBEIT NOT SUFFICIENTLY STRONG TO PROOF ITS CLINICAL UTILITY. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT THE INCLUSION OF MICROSACCADES, THE TINY EYE MOVEMENTS MADE WHEN THE GAZE IS FIXED ON A TARGET, IN THE CONTINUUM OF EYE MOVEMENTS, WILL PROVIDE AN IMPROVED TECHNIQUE TO DIAGNOSE CONCUSSION. THE CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED BY TWO SPECIFIC AIMS: THE FIRST ONE IS TO INCREASE THE RESOLUTION OF USING EYE MOVEMENTS TO DIAGNOSE CONCUSSION. TO EXECUTE THIS AIM, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE RECRUITED AMONG THE MORE THAN 300 STUDENTS OF MILLSAPS. THEY WILL CONDUCT A ~25-MINUTE OCULOMOTOR TASK WHILE THEIR EYE MOVEMENTS ARE RECORDED. ATHLETES WHO SUSTAIN A HEAD INJURY DURING THE FOLLOWING SPORTS SEASON WILL THEN BE INVITED TO RETAKE THE TEST. THE SECOND AIM IS TO SHOW THAT MONITORING EYE MOVEMENTS ARE ALSO USEFUL IN ASSESSING TO WHAT EXTENT AN INDIVIDUAL HAS RECOVERED FROM INJURY. TO EXECUTE THIS AIM, RECOVERING ATHLETES WILL BE INVITED TO TAKE THE OCULOMOTOR TASK WEEKLY. THE RESEARCH PROPOSED IN THIS APPLICATION IS INNOVATIVE, BECAUSE MICROSACCADES HAVE BEEN IGNORED IN EYE TRACKING STUDIES; MAINLY BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE HIGH FREQUENCY SAMPLING AND SPECIALIZED SOFTWARE. THE APPLICANT POSSESSES BOTH THE HARD- AND SOFTWARE NEEDED TO RECORD THOSE ELUSIVE EYE MOVEMENTS AND HIS PRELIMINARY RESULTS SUGGEST THAT INCLUDING MICROSACCADES WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE RESOLUTION OF ASSESSING OCULOMOTOR BEHAVIOR. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: REU SITE: DESIGNING SEDIMENTATION AND TECTONICS RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS (DE-STRESS) -THIS NEW COLLABORATIVE REU SITE HOSTED BY CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN BERNARDINO AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AIMS TO RECRUIT JUNIOR-LEVEL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND SOPHOMORE-LEVEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS INTO GEOSCIENCES EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER TRACKS THROUGH YEAR-LONG, COHORT-BASED, AUTHENTIC GEOLOGIC RESEARCH EXPERIENCES THAT ALSO INCLUDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING. THE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES CENTER ON RESOLVING THE MOVEMENT HISTORY OF THE SOUTHERN SAN ANDREAS FAULT (SAF) SYSTEM, PROVIDING A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO BOTH FURTHER SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF THIS SIGNIFICANT AND HAZARDOUS FAULT AND INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE SOCIETAL IMPORTANCE OF GEOSCIENCE RESEARCH AND CAREERS. ALTHOUGH MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT THE RECENT HISTORY (PAST 10,000 YEARS) AND THE ORIGIN OF THE SAF SYSTEM ~18-20 MILLION YEARS AGO, LESS IS KNOWN ABOUT ITS EVOLUTION DURING THE INTERVENING TIME. THE GOAL OF THIS REU IS TO HELP FILL THIS KNOWLEDGE GAP BY APPLYING A COMBINATION OF FIELD-BASED AND LAB-BASED TECHNIQUES IN TWO-WEEK FIELD AND LAB COMPONENTS. THIS UNCONVENTIONAL SCHEDULE WILL FACILITATE PARTICIPATION BY STUDENTS FOR WHOM A TRADITIONAL SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IS NOT FEASIBLE. THE PROJECT PLAN AS WELL AS STUDENT RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES WILL BROADEN AWARENESS OF GEOSCIENCE RESEARCH AND CAREERS AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FOR SOCIETY, WHILE STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN 2-YR AND 4-YR GEOSCIENCE PROGRAMS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND THE OHIO-KENTUCKY-INDIANA TRISTATE AREA. THE OVERARCHING THEME OF THE REU SITE IS INVESTIGATING THE MIDDLE MIOCENE TO LATEST PLEISTOCENE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF THE SOUTHERN SAN ANDREAS FAULT (SAF) SYSTEM IN THE GREATER SAN BERNARDINO REGION. THE SAF SYSTEM IN THIS REGION PROVIDES A NATURAL LABORATORY FOR EXPLORING THE EVOLUTION OF FAULT SYSTEMS AND THEIR INFLUENCES ON LANDSCAPES, EROSION, AND SEDIMENTATION. MENTORED TEAM PROJECTS WILL APPLY MODERN FIELD DATA COLLECTION AND LABORATORY ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES (INCLUDING LIDAR-BASED MAPPING AND MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS, FACIES ANALYSIS, DETRITAL ZIRCON PROVENANCE ANALYSIS, AND QUATERNARY DATING METHODS) TO DISPLACED SEDIMENTARY BASINS, DEPOSITS, AND GEOMORPHIC SURFACES, PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH A RANGE OF RESEARCH AND TRAINING EXPERIENCES THAT CULTIVATE ABUNDANT MENTOR-STUDENT AND STUDENT-STUDENT INTERACTIONS. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO TRANSFORM INTRODUCTORY STATISTICS INTO A SUBJECT THAT IS ENGAGING AND MEANINGFUL FOR ALL STUDENTS BUT ATTENDING TO THOSE ASPECTS SALIENT IN HIGHLY DIVERSE CLASSROOM SETTINGS. CENTERING EFFORTS ON THE NEEDS AND PREFERENCES OF STUDENTS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY DISENFRANCHISED IN STEM, THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON ENGAGING STUDENT LEARNING IN A LARGE CLASS SETTING BY USING EXERCISES WITH AUTOMATIC FEEDBACK TO ACCOMMODATE STUDENTS' BUSY WORKING-LEARNING SCHEDULES AND CULTIVATING A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT WITH GROUP STUDY AND PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTOR SUPPORT. AFTER DESIGNING AND ASSESSING THE THEME-BASED APPROACH AT THE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS, WHERE OVER 1700 STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT ANNUALLY, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL DISSEMINATE THEME-BASED LEARNING MATERIALS ACROSS VARIOUS PLATFORMS. AI HORIZON ADDRESSES THE CRITICAL GAP BETWEEN RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION AND EDUCATIONAL ADAPTATION THROUGH A NOVEL FORECASTING FRAMEWORK. THIS INITIATIVE WILL PREDICT WHICH CYBERSECURITY TASKS WILL BE AUGMENTED BY AI, REPLACED BY AI, OR REMAIN HUMAN-DRIVEN, ENABLING EDUCATORS TO ADAPT CURRICULUM WITH UNPRECEDENTED AGILITY. AI HORIZON ADVANCES KNOWLEDGE THROUGH A DATA-DRIVEN FORECASTING FRAMEWORK THAT SYSTEMATICALLY MAPS AI'S TRANSFORMATION OF CYBERSECURITY DOMAINS AND A NOVEL THREE-COMMITTEE IMPLEMENTATION MODEL THAT RAPIDLY TRANSLATES WORKFORCE INSIGHTS INTO EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES. THIS PROJECT USES RESOURCES PROVIDED THROUGH THE NATIONAL AI RESEARCH RESOURCE (NAIRR) PILOT AND IMPLEMENTS INNOVATIVE MECHANISMS FOR INTEGRATING NAIRR RESOURCES INTO CYBERSECURITY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. BY LEVERAGING NAIRR PILOT RESOURCES, AI HORIZON ADDRESSES A CRITICAL NATIONAL SECURITY IMPERATIVE BY CREATING A DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN EMERGING AI CAPABILITIES, CYBERSECURITY RESEARCH NEEDS, AND EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES. THE PROJECT WILL TRAIN ABOUT 1000 FACULTY MEMBERS AND 1000 STUDENTS ACROSS 470 INSTITUTIONS. MEASURING DYNAMIC CAPABILITY OF ADULT DAY HEALTH SERVICES IN THE US - THIS RESEARCH PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A THEORY-DRIVEN, STRUCTURED ASSESSMENT TOOL WITH CONTENT AND CONSTRUCT VALIDITY TO EVALUATE THE DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES (DC) OF ADULT DAY SERVICE (ADS) PROVIDERS. DC IS DEFINED AS AN ORGANIZATION’S ABILITY TO ADAPTIVELY BUILD, RECONFIGURE, AND INTEGRATE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMPETENCIES TO OPTIMIZE EFFECTIVENESS IN CHANGING ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROJECT ADDRESSES THREE SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES IN ADS RESEARCH: THE NEGLECT OF POPULATION PATTERNS AND ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS IN CURRENT MEASUREMENT PRACTICES, THE LACK OF RESPONSIVENESS RESEARCH DESPITE CHANGING NEEDS AND POLICIES, AND LIMITED RESEARCH ON HOW ADS PROVIDERS SERVE DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION. BUILDING UPON PREVIOUS PILOT WORK, THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP A STRUCTURED ASSESSMENT TOOL TO EVALUATE THE DC OF ADS PROVIDERS, WITH ATTENTION TO VARIATION ACROSS SERVICE CONTEXTS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOOL ENTAILS CONDUCTING IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH ADS ADMINISTRATORS, EXPERT CONSULTATION WITH THE NATIONAL ADULT DAY SERVICES ASSOCIATION (NADSA) PANEL AND PRETESTING WITH A SELECT GROUP OF ADS ADMINISTRATORS. THE FINALIZED ASSESSMENT TOOL WILL THEN BE DEPLOYED IN AN ONLINE SURVEY TARGETING OVER 4,000 REGISTERED MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS NATIONWIDE. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT AIMS TO ILLUMINATE THE ADAPTABILITY, MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, AND ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS SHAPING THE CAPABILITY OF ADS PROVIDERS TO SERVE A CHANGING OLDER POPULATION IN A DYNAMIC AND CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT. THE FINDINGS WILL OFFER EVIDENCE-BASED RECOMMENDATIONS TO ENHANCE THE CAPABILITIES OF ADS PROVIDERS, ENABLING THEM TO EFFECTIVELY RESPOND TO ANTICIPATED CHANGES IN DEMOGRAPHICS, TECHNOLOGY, AND POLICIES. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO BOLSTER THE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO (CSUSB), A PREDOMINANTLY TEACHING INSTITUTION, AND FOSTER THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR AND STUDENT RESEARCHERS. THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS DISCIPLINES WILL PROVIDE INVALUABLE SUPERVISED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND MENTORSHIP. IMPACT OF ADOLESCENT NICOTINE EXPOSURE ON METHAMPHETAMINE SELF-ADMINISTRATION IN FEMALE RATS - CIGARETTE SMOKING DURING ADOLESCENCE IS COMMON AND LEADS TO SEVERAL LONG-TERM ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES. PRECLINICAL STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT ADOLESCENT RATS ARE MORE SENSITIVE TO THE REWARDING EFFECTS OF NICOTINE AND THAT ADOLESCENT RATS EXPOSED TO NICOTINE ARE MORE SENSITIVE TO ILLICIT DRUG ADMINISTRATION INCLUDING METHAMPHETAMINE IN ADULTHOOD. THIS INCREASED SENSITIVITY TO METHAMPHETAMINE AFTER ADOLESCENT NICOTINE EXPOSURE MAY BE A RESULT OF ENHANCED NEUROINFLAMMATION. SPECIFICALLY, NICOTINE INCREASES MICROGLIA ACTIVATION DURING ADOLESCENCE AND MICROGLIA ACTIVATION IS NOW KNOWN TO BE AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTOR TO ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR. THE CURRENT PROJECT PROPOSES TO USE AN INTRAVENOUS METHAMPHETAMINE SELF-ADMINISTRATION PROCEDURE TO FURTHER EXPLORE THE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE EXPOSURE ON THE REINFORCING PROPERTIES OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN ADOLESCENT RATS. BOTH MALE AND FEMALE RATS WILL BE USED AS FEMALE RATS ARE TYPICALLY EXCLUDED FROM PRECLINICAL INVESTIGATIONS, HOWEVER OUR PRELIMINARY DATA USING ORAL SELF-ADMINISTRATION INDICATE THAT FEMALE RATS SHOW A GREATER NICOTINE ENHANCEMENT OF METHAMPHETAMINE INTAKE AFTER ADOLESCENT NICOTINE EXPOSURE. IN SPECIFIC AIM 1, WE WILL USE INTRAVENOUS SELF-ADMINISTRATION TO DETERMINE IF ADOLESCENT NICOTINE INCREASES METHAMPHETAMINE INTAKE, REINSTATEMENT, OR RELAPSE IN MALE AND FEMALE RATS IN A SEX DEPENDENT MANNER. IN SPECIFIC AIM 2 WE WILL DETERMINE IF INFLAMMATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALTERATIONS IN METHAMPHETAMINE SELF-ADMINISTRATION. TO THIS END WE WILL TREAT RATS WITH THE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUG, ROFLUMILAST BEFORE ASSESSING DRUG SEEKING AND METHAMPHETAMINE INTAKE. WE WILL ALSO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF INFLAMMATION BY MEASURING IF RATS TREATED WITH NICOTINE DURING ADOLESCENCE HAVE GREATER EXPRESSION OF INFLAMMATORY MARKERS INCLUDING IBA1, TNF-Α AND IL-6. UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ADOLESCENT NICOTINE EXPOSURE AND LATER METHAMPHETAMINE ABUSE WILL HELP IDENTIFY NEW AND HOPEFULLY BETTER THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS.

RUI: MODEL THEORY AND STRUCTURAL RAMSEY THEORY -IN A LARGE ENOUGH DATA SET, A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF UNIFORMITY IS GUARANTEED. VARIATIONS ON THIS THEME ARE CALLED RAMSEY THEOREMS AFTER THE GROUNDBREAKING WORK OF FRANK RAMSEY IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. RAMSEY THEOREMS HAVE BEEN USED MOST RECENTLY IN COMPUTER SCIENCE TO DESIGN EFFICIENT ALGORITHMS ON CERTAIN TYPES OF DATA SETS. THIS PROJECT CONCERNS STRUCTURAL RAMSEY THEORY, WHICH USES TOOLS FROM MODEL THEORY TO DESCRIBE THE OBJECTS UNDER STUDY. MODEL THEORY IS AN AREA OF FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS THAT STUDIES PROPERTIES HOLDING GENERALLY ON LARGE SETS OF MATHEMATICAL OBJECTS, ACROSS DIFFERENT AREAS OF MATHEMATICS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL EXTEND THE CONTRIBUTION OF MODEL THEORY TO STRUCTURAL RAMSEY THEORY. METHODS FROM SATURATED MODEL THEORY, PSEUDOFINITE MODEL THEORY, CATEGORY THEORY, AND TOPOLOGICAL DYNAMICS WILL BE APPLIED TO CREATE NEW KNOWLEDGE PATHWAYS ACROSS THESE DIFFERENT AREAS OF MATHEMATICS. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO PROVIDE INCREASED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT STUDIES HOW CERTAIN MAPS BETWEEN TWO INFINITE STRUCTURES IN POSSIBLY DIFFERENT FIRST-ORDER LANGUAGES CAN TRANSFER INFORMATION ABOUT THE AUTOMORPHISM GROUPS OF THESE STRUCTURES AND, ULTIMATELY, THE RAMSEY PROPERTIES OF THE FINITELY-GENERATED STRUCTURES EMBEDDABLE IN THESE INFINITE STRUCTURES. IN PARTICULAR, THIS PROJECT STUDIES A PAIR OF MAPS BETWEEN TWO INFINITE STRUCTURES CALLED A SEMI-RETRACTION THAT INDUCES A RETRACTION OF THE TYPE SPACE OF ONE STRUCTURE ONTO THE TYPE SPACE OF THE OTHER. THIS PROJECT ALSO STUDIES WHICH RAMSEY THEOREMS TRANSFER FROM A CLASS OF FINITE STRUCTURES TO ULTRAPRODUCTS OF THESE FINITE STRUCTURES. THIS PROJECT WILL IDENTIFY NOTIONS OF TAME PARTITIONS AND INVESTIGATE THE CLASSES OF STRUCTURES WHICH HAVE A RAMSEY THEOREM FOR THESE TAME PARTITIONS, BUT PERHAPS NOT IN GENERAL. MANY TEST CASES ARE AVAILABLE AS A RESULT OF A CONFLUENCE OF RECENT RESULTS IN THE CALCULATION OF FINITE BIG RAMSEY DEGREES. THIS WORK IS ANTICIPATED TO HAVE APPLICATIONS IN CLASSIFICATION THEORY IN MODEL THEORY, AS WELL AS IN TOPOLOGICAL DYNAMICS. INFERRING SUCH RELATIONS IS CRUCIAL FOR IMPORTANT AREAS OF CURRENT CONCERN, SUCH AS CONSERVATION EFFORTS, UNDERSTANDING INFECTIOUS DISEASE DYNAMICS, AND IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES. HYBRID SPECIATION, OR HYBRIDIZATION, OCCURS WHEN TWO DISTINCT SPECIES MERGE GENETICALLY TO CREATE A NEW ONE, AND IT IS KNOWN TO HAVE PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE EVOLUTION OF MANY SPECIES, INCLUDING BUTTERFLIES, SALAMANDERS, SUNFLOWERS, AND PRIMROSES, AMONG MANY OTHERS. IN THIS PROJECT, THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR WILL DEVELOP MUCH-NEEDED ALGORITHMS TO BE USED BY THE BIOLOGICAL COMMUNITY AS A TOOL TO DETECT HYBRIDIZATION BETWEEN SPECIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE PI WILL DESIGN AND CONDUCT MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE ASPIRING SCHOLARS, ESPECIALLY THOSE BELONGING TO MINORITY GROUPS, TO PURSUE A CAREER IN STEM. THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF THE ALGORITHMS THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED IN THIS PROPOSAL WILL BE THE NETWORK MULTISPECIES COALESCENT MODEL (NMSC), A STANDARD STOCHASTIC MODEL DESCRIBING THE DISTINCT EVOLUTIONARY RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SPECIES? GENES IN THE PRESENCE OF INCOMPLETE LINEAGE SORTING AND HYBRIDIZATION. CURRENT STATISTICALLY CONSISTENT METHODS TO INFER SPECIES NETWORKS UNDER THE NMSC ARE RESTRICTED TO A RATHER SIMPLE FAMILY OF NETWORKS KNOWN AS LEVEL-1. THE PI WILL DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT FAST AND CONSISTENT ALGORITHMS TO INFER MORE GENERAL SPECIES NETWORKS UNDER THE NMSC FROM GENOMIC DATA. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED WITH THREE AIMS: (1) EXPAND CURRENT IDENTIFIABILITY RESULTS TO A MORE GENERAL FAMILY OF NETWORKS; (2) DEVELOP ALGORITHMS TO INFER STATISTICALLY CONSISTENT ESTIMATORS OF SPECIES NETWORKS; AND (3) IMPLEMENT ALGORITHMS THAT ARE USEFUL, RELIABLE, AND EASY TO USE. SOFTWARE IMPLEMENTATIONS WILL HANDLE LARGE DATASETS UNDER ATTAINABLE RUNNING TIMES, BE MADE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE, AND INCLUDE EXTENSIVE NOVEL FUNCTIONALITIES THAT WILL BE WIDELY USEFUL TO THE BIOLOGICAL COMMUNITY. A RESEARCHER AND HER TEAM AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNADINO, HAS BEEN AWARDED A MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES ASCENDING FACULTY CATALYST (AFC) AWARD TO STUDY UFDS IN AN EFFORT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GALAXY FORMATION, GALAXY EVOLUTION, AND COSMOLOGY EARLY IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE. A RELATED PROJECT WILL INVOLVE STUDIES OF STARS IN OUR OWN GALAXY, THE MILKY WAY (MW). FOR OVER A CENTURY, ASTRONOMERS HAVE USED VARIOUS DISTANCE MEASUREMENT METHODS TO CONSTRUCT A COSMIC DISTANCE LADDER WITH RR LYRAE (RRL) STARS IN THE MW CONSTITUTING THE CLOSEST RUNG. RECENT TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES HAVE CREATED INCREDIBLY LARGE DATA SETS OF RRL OBSERVATIONS. RRL ARE NOT ONLY USED AS DISTANCE INDICATORS, BUT THROUGH THEIR RADIAL VELOCITIES, THEY CAN BE TOOLS TO MEASURE THE MW?S MASS. THIS AWARD WILL ALSO ENABLE THE CREATION OF A TWO-YEAR MENTORSHIP EDUCATION CURRICULUM FOR THE CAL-BRIDGE PROGRAM, A CALIFORNIA STATE-WIDE STEM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. NUMEROUS STEM-EDUCATION BASED REPORTS HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORSHIP IN BROADENING THE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS IN HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN STEM AND AN EQUAL IMPORTANCE ON MENTORS BEING EDUCATED IN MENTORSHIP. OVER THE COURSE OF THE AFC AWARD, PREVIOUSLY ACQUIRED SPECTROSCOPIC DATA FROM FIVE UFDS WILL BE ANALYZED TO MEASURE METALLICITIES AND CHEMICAL ABUNDANCES TOWARDS BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE SCATTER IN THE LOW STELLAR MASS END OF THE STELLAR MASS-TO-METALLICITY RELATION. BY COMBINING THE NEWEST LARGE OBSERVATIONAL DATASETS, THE RESEARCHERS ALSO PLAN TO CREATE THE LARGEST, MOST ACCURATE RRL 6-DIMENSIONAL PHASE SPACE COORDINATE DATA TABLE WITH PERIOD-LUMINOSITY CALIBRATED RADIAL VELOCITIES. THIS WILL BE EMPLOYED IN AN EFFORT TO MORE ACCURATELY MEASURE THE MASS OF THE MILKY WAY. IN ADDITION, THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR WILL CREATE AND RUN A TRIAL OF A TWO-YEAR LONG CAL-BRIDGE MENTORSHIP EDUCATION CURRICULUM CONSISTING OF TWO IN-PERSON WORKSHOPS, AND FOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS. HSI PILOT PROJECT: IMPROVING ONLINE STEM EDUCATION FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT HSIS -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS TRACK 1 PILOT PROJECT AIMS TO STUDY ONLINE EDUCATION ACROSS SEVERAL DISCIPLINES AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO. ONLINE EDUCATION PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY AND ACCESS FOR STUDENTS THAT MAY OTHERWISE STRUGGLE TO ENGAGE IN A TRADITIONAL IN-PERSON COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. AT THE SAME TIME, UNDERSTANDING AND STRENGTHENING ONLINE STEM EDUCATION CAN BE A CHALLENGE DUE TO THE VARIETY OF NEEDS AND PRACTICES ACROSS DISCIPLINES. THE NEED TO UNDERSTAND EFFECTIVE ONLINE EDUCATION WAS MAGNIFIED DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WHICH NECESSITATED RAPID, WHOLE-INSTITUTION MOVES TO ONLINE COURSES. THIS PROJECT WILL EXPLORE ONLINE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN FOUR DISCIPLINES: BIOLOGY, COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, PSYCHOLOGY, AND INFORMATION DECISION SCIENCES, AND WILL INVESTIGATE AND COMPARE PRACTICES THAT SPECIFICALLY SHOW POTENTIAL TO POSITIVELY IMPACT STUDENTS IN AN HSI SETTING. AN OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO FOCUS ON HOW BEST TO SERVE A BROAD AND DIVERSE POPULATION OF ONLINE LEARNERS. FOUR AREAS OF ONLINE TEACHING PRACTICE WILL BE INVESTIGATED: LECTURE ATTRIBUTES, STUDENT PRACTICE STRATEGIES, ONLINE LABS, AND TESTING PRACTICES. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT WILL LOOK AT KEY, OVERLAPPING ISSUES FOR STUDENTS FROM GROUPS TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM, LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS, FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS, AND OTHER GROUPS. A KEY AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND HOW ISSUES SUCH AS REDUCED ONLINE ACCESS, LIVING CONDITIONS, AND PREFERENCE FOR STRUCTURE AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY MIGHT IMPACT STUDENT OUTCOMES IN ONLINE COURSES. PROJECT RESEARCH WILL USE SURVEYS, FOCUS GROUPS, AND DATA FROM ONLINE CLASSROOMS TO ANALYZE PRACTICES IN EACH OF THE FOUR FOCAL DISCIPLINES. DISSEMINATION WILL FOCUS ON SHARING BOTH PROMISING AND POTENTIALLY HARMFUL EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES (AS CAUTIONS), AS WELL AS SPECIFIC APPROACHES THAT SHOW PROMISE TO IMPROVE LEARNING IN EACH OF THE TARGETED DISCIPLINES OR AREAS OF ONLINE TEACHING PRACTICE. THE HSI PROGRAM AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION, BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND BUILD CAPACITY AT HSIS. MECHANISMS, STRUCTURES AND ENGINEERING OF FLAVONOID-PRODUCING DIOXYGENASE ENZYMES - ABSTRACT THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO FILL IN THE GAPS THAT EXIST IN OUR STRUCTURAL AND MECHANISTIC UNDERSTANDINGS OF ALPHA KETOGLUTARATE-DEPENDENT DIOXYGENASES, A MEDICALLY IMPORTANT FAMILY OF ENZYMES THAT PERFORM A BROAD REPERTOIRE OF BIOCHEMICAL TRANSFORMATIONS. THE FLAVONOID BIOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY IS DEPENDENT UPON FLAVANONE SYNTHASE 1 (FLS1) AND FLAVANONE 3-HYDROXYLASE (F3H) TO MAKE MEDICALLY SIGNIFICANT PRODUCTS, QUERCETIN AND (2S,3R)-TRANS-TAXIFOLIN, RESPECTIVELY. THESE PRODUCTS HAVE DEMONSTRATED HEALTH BENEFITS AND ARE BROADLY STUDIED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR CELLULAR AND METABOLIC ROLES IN MAINTAINING HUMAN HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF THE GUT MICROBIOME. HOWEVER, THE MECHANISTIC AND STRUCTURAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENZYMES THAT MAKE THESE KEY FLAVONOIDS IS INCOMPLETE. A STRONGER BIOCHEMICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THESE ENZYMES IS NEEDED TO INFORM AND DIVERSIFY STRATEGIES TO BIOSYNTHESIZE FLAVONOIDS THAT ARE USEFUL FOR RESEARCH. THE FIRST AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO USE AN INNOVATIVE METHOD TO MEASURE THE MECHANISMS OF FLS1 AND F3H. THIS METHOD WILL HAVE BROAD APPLICABILITY FOR STUDYING THE MECHANISMS OF OTHER ENZYMES IN THE FAMILY OF ALPHA KETOGLUTARATE-DEPENDENT DIOXYGENASES. TECHNIQUES USED TO ACHIEVE THIS AIM INCLUDE HIGH RESOLUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY AND BIOSYNTHESIS OF ISOTOPE LABELED PRODUCTS. THE SECOND AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ELUCIDATE THE STRUCTURES OF FLS1 AND F3H BOUND TO PRODUCTS AND SUBSTRATES. FINDINGS FROM THE SECOND AIM WILL HELP TO SUPPORT THE MECHANISTIC FINDINGS OF THE RELATED FIRST AIM. IN ADDITION, THESE FINDINGS WILL PROVIDE ACCURATE MODELS FOR FUTURE STUDIES AND ENZYME ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS, WITH THE GOAL OF DIVERSIFYING FLAVONOID BIOSYNTHETIC STRATEGIES. THE METHOD USED TO ACHIEVE THE SECOND AIM IS PRIMARILY PROTEIN X-RAY CRYSTALLOGRAPHY. THE PRODUCTS OF THIS RESEARCH WILL INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENZYME MECHANISMS OF ALPHA KETOGLUTARATE-DEPENDENT DIOXYGENASES AS WELL AS PROVIDE NEW METHODS TO STUDY THEM. EAGER: USING MACHINE LEARNING TO DEVELOP A CALIBRATED, REMOTE SENSING-BASED AGE MODEL TO IMPROVE LATE QUATERNARY SLIP-RATE ESTIMATES IN ARID ENVIRONMENTS -THIS STUDY AIMS TO IMPROVE THE METHODS SURROUNDING SURFACE LANDFORM DATING, AND THUS METHODS FOR DETERMINING RATES OF FAULT SLIP. ACCURATE SLIP RATES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR TECTONICS AND EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS RESEARCH, AND OFTEN REQUIRE NUMEROUS SURFACE AGES. SUCH DATING EFFORTS CAN BE CHALLENGING DUE TO A LACK OF DATABLE MATERIALS, COST CONCERNS, OR ACCESSIBILITY OF FIELD SITES. RECENT INVESTIGATIONS HAVE DIRECTLY CORRELATED SPECIFIC REMOTE SENSING OBSERVATIONS TO THE ABSOLUTE AGE OF SURFACE LANDFORMS. USING A LARGE REPOSITORY OF REMOTE SENSING DATA AND RECENT ADVANCES IN DATA SCIENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING, THIS STUDY WILL INTEGRATE MULTIPLE, DISTINCT TYPES OF REMOTELY SENSED DATA WITH PUBLISHED AGE DATA, TO DEVELOP A CALIBRATED AGE MODEL THAT WILL BE APPLIED TO FAULTED LANDFORMS IN SOUTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA. THE METHODOLOGY WILL BE APPLIED TO THE EASTERN GARLOCK FAULT, A MAJOR STRIKE-SLIP FAULT IN THIS REGION, AND AID IN ANSWERING LONGSTANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE FAULT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TECTONICS. THIS STUDY WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO EARTHQUAKE HAZARD ANALYSIS OF MANY ACTIVE FAULTS IN SOUTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA, A REGION UNDER THREAT OF DAMAGING EARTHQUAKES AND WITH A POPULATION OF MORE THAN 3 MILLION PEOPLE. IMPROVED EARTHQUAKE HAZARD ASSESSMENTS ARE CRITICAL FOR FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL AGENCIES AND REGULATORY BODIES, A BROAD SPECTRUM OF INDUSTRY, AND THE PUBLIC. THE MODEL PRODUCED BY THIS STUDY CAN ALSO FORM A FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE SURFACE AGE STUDIES AROUND THE WORLD. ADDITIONALLY, THIS STUDY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE STEM WORKFORCE BY ADVANCING THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF A FEMALE GRADUATE STUDENT AND AT LEAST TWO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, AS WELL AS THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TWO EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS, INCLUDING A FEMALE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR. GEOLOGIC SLIP RATES ARE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF SEISMIC HAZARD ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL TO ADDRESSING MANY PRESSING QUESTIONS AT THE FOREFRONT OF TECTONICS AND SEISMOLOGICAL RESEARCH. HOWEVER, DISCREPANCIES OF LATE-CENOZOIC AND PRESENT-DAY SLIP RATES CONTINUE TO BE DEBATED, PARTICULARLY WHEN SLIP RATE ESTIMATES SPAN DIFFERENT TIMESCALES OF ACTIVITY. DISCRIMINATING TRUE SLIP RATE DISCREPANCIES FROM OBSERVATIONAL BIASES / LIMITATIONS REQUIRES AN ACCURATE (AND SELF-CONSISTENT) VIEW OF SLIP RATES AND THEIR TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL VARIABILITY. HOWEVER, OBTAINING ROBUST SLIP RATES REMAINS CHALLENGING, DUE TO LACK OF DATEABLE MATERIALS, COST CONCERNS, OR ACCESSIBILITY OF FIELD SITES. ADDRESSING THESE CHALLENGES, RECENT INVESTIGATIONS HAVE DIRECTLY CORRELATED SPECIFIC REMOTE SENSING INDICES TO THE ABSOLUTE AGE OF LANDFORMS. USING THE BROAD COMBINED REPOSITORY OF REMOTE SENSING DATA FROM THE PAST 20 YEARS AND RECENT ADVANCES IN DATA SCIENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING, THE INVESTIGATORS WILL EXPAND ON THESE EFFORTS AND INTEGRATE SEVERAL TYPES OF REMOTELY SENSED DATA WITH PUBLISHED GEOCHRONOLOGY DATA TO DEVELOP A CALIBRATED SURFACE PROPERTY-AGE MODEL THAT WILL BE APPLIED TO FAULTED LANDFORMS IN THE EASTERN CALIFORNIA SHEAR ZONE / SOUTHERN WALKER LANE OF SOUTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA. THE ENSEMBLE MODEL WILL INCORPORATE DIFFERENT MODELED RESPONSES BETWEEN SENSED VALUES AND SURFACE AGE. ENSEMBLE MODELING USES A VARIETY OF STATISTICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL MODELS TO FUSE AN ARRAY OF SINGLE VARIATE MODELS TO SOLVE CLASSIFICATION AND REGRESSION PROBLEMS. WITH THE VARIETY OF REMOTE SENSORS, BANDS, AND SPATIAL SCALES AVAILABLE, A WEALTH OF DATA CAN BE CONSOLIDATED INTO A COHESIVE, ROBUST MODEL. THE INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE SUCH RIGOROUS DATA TREATMENT MAY YIELD SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED UNCERTAINTIES ON RESULTING AGES COMPARED WITH INDIVIDUAL MODELS. THIS PROJECT WILL USE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS TO EXPLORE THE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF METHANE GAS AND CARBON DIOXIDE. THOSE LAB DATA WILL ENABLE FUTURE STUDIES OF CH4 AND CO2 IN SEAFLOOR VENTS. THE STUDY WILL INFORM STUDIES OF THE CYCLING OF CARBON BETWEEN THE EARTH?S INTERIOR AND OCEANS. IT IS ALSO RELEVANT TO LIFE IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS AND THE ORIGIN OF LIFE. PROJECT BROADER IMPACTS INCLUDE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND HIGH-SCHOOL SUMMER INTERNS. GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO (A MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION) WILL SPEND TIME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AND THE CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON. THERE THEY WILL GAIN EXPERIENCE WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY. DEEP-SEA HYDROTHERMAL VENT SYSTEMS AFFECT THE CYCLING OF CARBON BETWEEN THE EARTH?S INTERIOR AND OCEANS BY INTRODUCING ORGANIC COMPOUNDS OF THERMOGENIC, ABIOTIC AND MICROBIAL ORIGIN TO THE OVERLYING WATER COLUMN. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO EXPLORE THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF CH4 IN DEEP-SEA VENTS BY EMPLOYING THE USE OF DOUBLE-SUBSTITUTED AND DOUBLY-DEUTERATED ISOTOPOLOGUES (13CH3D, 12CH2D2). IN A SERIES OF HYDROTHERMAL EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING ORGANIC MATTER DECOMPOSITION. CO2 REDUCTION AND NON-EQUILIBRATED CH4 GASES IN THE PRESENCE OF MINERAL CATALYSTS, THE DISTRIBUTION OF RARE METHANE ISOTOPOLOGUE WILL BE ASSESSED BY THE USE OF A HIGH-MASS-RESOLUTION GAS-SOURCE MULTIPLE COLLECTOR MASS SPECTROMETER (PANORAMA, UMD). EXPERIMENTS WILL ASSESS THE EQUILIBRIUM RELATIONSHIPS IN THE 12CH2D2-13CH3D-12CH3D-12CH4-13CH4-HD-HDO-H2O SYSTEM AND DESCRIBE ISOTOPE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPACT OF MINERAL PHASES AND H2O H ISOTOPE COMPOSITION ON THE ABIOTIC AND THERMOGENIC FORMATION MECHANISMS. THIS STUDY AIMS TO BE A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF DELTA-12CH2D2 AND DELTA-13CH3D EVOLUTION APPLIED TO SUBSEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS AND WATER/ROCK INTERACTIONS DEEPER IN THE OCEANIC CRUST. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROJECT ASKS HOW TARGETING DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE CULTURE CYCLE CAN BEST SHIFT PEER REVIEW CULTURE TOWARD GREATER EQUITY. BY RE-IMAGINING IDEAS ABOUT WHAT PEER REVIEW IS, THE EVIDENCE-BASED TRAINING WILL ENGAGE INDIVIDUALS WITH NEW TOOLS AND SUPPORTS, WHETHER THEY ARE TRAINEES OR REVIEWERS. A NEW PAPER DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM (FORMATIVE AND INTERACTIVE REVIEW) WILL PROVIDE A NOVEL INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE FOR FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT INTERACTIONS BETWEEN REVIEWERS AND TRAINEES. OUTREACH AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXISTING INSTITUTIONS (JOURNALS, SOCIETIES) WILL LEAD TO THE DISSEMINATION OF NEW VIEWS OF THE GOALS AND PROCESSES OF PEER REVIEW. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: BROADENING INCLUSIVE PARTICIPATION IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION FOR SOCIAL GOOD USING A SITUATED LEARNING APPROACH -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY IMPROVING COLLEGE-LEVEL EDUCATION IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI). ADVANCES IN AI WILL LIKELY IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, AND OTHER SOCIETAL ISSUES. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT COLLEGE STUDENTS GAIN SKILLS IN AI TO PREPARE THEM TO BE FUTURE LEADERS AND INNOVATORS. HOWEVER, CURRENT AI EDUCATION LACKS BOTH BROAD MULTIDISCIPLINARY PARTICIPATION AND DIVERSITY. THE PROJECT PLANS TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING EDUCATION IN AI THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS, NOT JUST THOSE ENROLLED IN COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMS. TO DO SO, THE PROJECT TEAM HOPES TO DEVELOP MATERIALS THAT IDENTIFY SOCIAL PROBLEMS AND TEACH STUDENTS TO APPLY AI CONCEPTS AND METHODS TO ADDRESS THESE PROBLEMS. AS A RESULT, THIS PROJECT MAY BETTER PREPARE TODAY?S COLLEGE STUDENTS TO ENTER THE STEM WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE. THE PROJECT INTENDS TO DEVELOP AI LEARNING MODULES TO STIMULATE AI LEARNING IN STUDENTS? COMMUNITIES. THE STUDENTS WILL BE TRAINED HOW TO IDENTIFY SOCIAL PROBLEMS. THE INSTRUCTORS WILL TEACH STUDENTS AI CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS THROUGH HANDS-ON AI LABS. THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO PROPOSE AI-POWERED SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS SOCIAL ISSUES CONSIDERING BOTH BENEFITS AND RISKS.
