THE SHORTAGE OF LICENSED STEM TEACHERS, PARTICULARLY TEACHERS REPRESENTING THE DEMOGRAPHIC BACKGROUNDS OF MOST STUDENTS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS, IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA AS WELL AS THE NATION. SAINT MARY?S UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA WILL ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM BY RECRUITING MORE HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, INTO ITS STEM+EDUCATION DUAL DEGREE PROGRAM AND MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING PROGRAM. THESE 24 PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS WILL BE PREPARED TO TEACH IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS IN A STATE WITH A GROWING STEM TEACHER SHORTAGE AND SIGNIFICANT RACIAL DISPARITY BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT ISTEP SCHOLARS? PREPARATION AND MENTORSHIP IN STEM TEACHING WILL IMPROVE THEIR FUTURE SECONDARY STUDENTS? STEM ACHIEVEMENT AND READINESS FOR POST-SECONDARY LEARNING AND CAREERS IN STEM. THIS PROJECT AT SAINT MARY?S UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA IS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WINONA AREA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, A HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE ROCHESTER STEM ACADEMY, WHICH SERVES STUDENTS FROM HIGH-NEED COMMUNITIES. OVER THE FIVE YEAR PROJECT, PROJECT GOALS WILL INCLUDE: (1) INCREASING THE NUMBER OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS COMMITTED TO TEACHING IN HIGH-NEED LOCAL EDUCATION AGENCIES (LEAS) IN SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA; (2) STRENGTHENING THE PIPELINE OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS COMMITTED TO TEACHING IN HIGH-NEED LEAS IN SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA BY INSTITUTIONALIZING THE KEY ISTEP PROJECT COMPONENTS OF RECRUITING, PREPARING, AND SUPPORTING RETENTION OF DIVERSE, HIGH-QUALITY SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED LEA SCHOOLS; AND (3) CONTRIBUTING TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE RELATED TO RECRUITMENT, PREPARATION, AND RETENTION OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE PROJECT'S 24 HIGH-ACHIEVING PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS (13 UNDERGRADUATES AND 11 AT THE MASTER?S DEGREE LEVEL) WILL EITHER (1) OBTAIN DUAL DEGREES, WITH ONE DEGREE BEING A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, OR MATHEMATICS, AND THE OTHER IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (REFERRED TO AS STEM+EDUCATION); OR (2) WILL ALREADY POSSESS A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN A STEM DISCIPLINE AND WILL EARN A MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (MAT). ISTEP SCHOLAR RECRUITMENT WILL INCLUDE A DIVERSE SET OF STRATEGIES FOR BOTH UNDERGRADUATES AND STEM PROFESSIONALS. SCHOLAR MENTORING WILL BE IMPLEMENTED WITHIN A COGNITIVE COACHING FRAMEWORK. AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR WILL ASSIST THE ISTEP MANAGEMENT TEAM IN ADVANCING THE FRONTIERS OF KNOWLEDGE IN RECRUITMENT, PREPARATION, AND RETENTION OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SCIENCE EDUCATION AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL BY PREPARING TEACHERS OF DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS LICENSED IN STEM FIELDS WILL ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTE TO A DIVERSE, GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE STEM WORKFORCE. THIS TRACK 1: SCHOLARSHIPS AND STIPENDS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). STANDARDS THAT GSS FOLLOWS INCLUDE THOSE DESCRIBED IN CLASSIFICATION OF WETLANDS AND DEEPWATER HABITATS OF THE U.S. (COWARDIN ET AL., 1979, REVISED 2013) AND FEDERAL WETLANDS MAPPING STANDARD (2009). FOR THE FIRST PHASE, GSS WILL IDENTIFY AND MAP WETLANDS USING THE MOST CURRENT DIGITAL IMAGERY AND ANCILLARY DATASETS PROVIDED OR IDENTIFIED BY THE USFWS (E.G., MAXAR MOSAIC, NOAA LAND COVER, IFSAR OR LIDAR). THE MAPPING WILL BE COMPLETED AT A RESOLUTION OF A ONE-ACRE TARGET MAP UNIT IN THE COASTAL AREA OF THE TOGIAK PENINSULA AND THE PRIBILOFF ISLANDS (FIGURE 1). ALL MAPPING WILL UNDERGO 100 INTERNAL QUALITY CONTROL AND WILL BE VALIDATED USING CUSTOMIZED NWI VERIFICATION TOOLS DEVELOPED BY USFWS. FOUR DATA ITERATIONS OF USFWS QUALITY CONTROL WILL BE COMPLETED FOR EACH MAPPING AREA. THIS WILL INCLUDE INSTITUTIONALIZING A MENTAL HEALTH COALITION, ENHANCING COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS AND ACCESS TO SERVICES, DEVELOPING AND DISSEMINATING CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE OUTREACH MATERIALS, LAUNCHING A STUDENT-DRIVEN MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA REDUCTION CAMPAIGN, IMPLEMENTING A LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMMING AUDIT AND LETHAL MEANS AUDIT, EXPANDING MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD) SCREENING AND ASSESSMENTS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT/IMPLEMENTATION OF A MENTAL HEALTH BLUEPRINT. ALTHOUGH URBAN GROWTH IN KENAI AND SOLDOTNA IS ADVANTAGEOUS FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY, TRANSITION FROM VEGETATED LANDSCAPES TO IMPERVIOUS COVER CAN INCREASE STORMWATER RUNOFF. THIS IN TURN CAN INCREASE THE VOLUME OF WATER AND QUANTITY OF WATER QUALITY CONSTITUENTS (SEDIMENT, HEAVY METALS LIKE COPPER AND ZINC, NUTRIENTS, SALT) THAT ARE DELIVERED TO RECEIVING SURFACE WATER BODIES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN URBANIZING LOCATIONS NEAR THE KENAI RIVER, KNOWN NATIONALLY FOR ITS RECREATIONAL AND SUBSISTENCE SALMON FISHING. ADDRESSING THE STEM TEACHER SHORTAGE THROUGH AN INCLUSIVE STEM TEACHER EDUCATION PIPELINE -THE INCLUSIVE STEM TEACHER EDUCATION PIPELINE (ISTEP) PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL NEED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HIGHLY QUALIFIED MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STEM TEACHERS, INCLUDING THOSE FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS. THE SHORTAGE OF LICENSED STEM TEACHERS, PARTICULARLY TEACHERS REPRESENTING THE DEMOGRAPHIC BACKGROUNDS OF MOST STUDENTS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS, IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA AS WELL AS THE NATION. SAINT MARY?S UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA WILL ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM BY RECRUITING MORE HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, INTO ITS STEM+EDUCATION DUAL DEGREE PROGRAM AND MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING PROGRAM. THESE 24 PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS WILL BE PREPARED TO TEACH IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS IN A STATE WITH A GROWING STEM TEACHER SHORTAGE AND SIGNIFICANT RACIAL DISPARITY BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT ISTEP SCHOLARS? PREPARATION AND MENTORSHIP IN STEM TEACHING WILL IMPROVE THEIR FUTURE SECONDARY STUDENTS? STEM ACHIEVEMENT AND READINESS FOR POST-SECONDARY LEARNING AND CAREERS IN STEM. THIS PROJECT AT SAINT MARY?S UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA IS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WINONA AREA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, A HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE ROCHESTER STEM ACADEMY, WHICH SERVES STUDENTS FROM HIGH-NEED COMMUNITIES. OVER THE FIVE YEAR PROJECT, PROJECT GOALS WILL INCLUDE: (1) INCREASING THE NUMBER OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS COMMITTED TO TEACHING IN HIGH-NEED LOCAL EDUCATION AGENCIES (LEAS) IN SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA; (2) STRENGTHENING THE PIPELINE OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS COMMITTED TO TEACHING IN HIGH-NEED LEAS IN SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA BY INSTITUTIONALIZING THE KEY ISTEP PROJECT COMPONENTS OF RECRUITING, PREPARING, AND SUPPORTING RETENTION OF DIVERSE, HIGH-QUALITY SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED LEA SCHOOLS; AND (3) CONTRIBUTING TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE RELATED TO RECRUITMENT, PREPARATION, AND RETENTION OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE PROJECT'S 24 HIGH-ACHIEVING PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS (13 UNDERGRADUATES AND 11 AT THE MASTER?S DEGREE LEVEL) WILL EITHER (1) OBTAIN DUAL DEGREES, WITH ONE DEGREE BEING A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, OR MATHEMATICS, AND THE OTHER IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (REFERRED TO AS STEM+EDUCATION); OR (2) WILL ALREADY POSSESS A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN A STEM DISCIPLINE AND WILL EARN A MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (MAT). ISTEP SCHOLAR RECRUITMENT WILL INCLUDE A DIVERSE SET OF STRATEGIES FOR BOTH UNDERGRADUATES AND STEM PROFESSIONALS. SCHOLAR MENTORING WILL BE IMPLEMENTED WITHIN A COGNITIVE COACHING FRAMEWORK. AN EXTERNAL EVALUATOR WILL ASSIST THE ISTEP MANAGEMENT TEAM IN ADVANCING THE FRONTIERS OF KNOWLEDGE IN RECRUITMENT, PREPARATION, AND RETENTION OF SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SCIENCE EDUCATION AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL BY PREPARING TEACHERS OF DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS LICENSED IN STEM FIELDS WILL ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTE TO A DIVERSE, GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE STEM WORKFORCE. THIS TRACK 1: SCHOLARSHIPS AND STIPENDS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THIS PROJECT WILL ASSIST USFWS IN MEETING THEIR REQUIREMENT TO PRODUCE NATIONALLY STANDARD COMPLIANT NWI DATA FOR ALASKA. STANDARDS THAT GSS FOLLOWS INCLUDE THOSE DESCRIBED IN CLASSIFICATION OF WETLANDS AND DEEPWATER HABITATS OF THE U.S. (COWARDIN ET AL., 1979, REVISED 2013) AND FEDERAL WETLANDS MAPPING STANDARD (2009). FOR THE FIRST PHASE, GSS WILL IDENTIFY AND MAP WETLANDS USING THE MOST CURRENT DIGITAL IMAGERY AND ANCILLARY DATASETS PROVIDED OR IDENTIFIED BY THE USFWS (E.G., MAXAR MOSAIC, NOAA LAND COVER, IFSAR OR LIDAR). THE MAPPING WILL BE COMPLETED AT A RESOLUTION OF A ONE-ACRE TARGET MAP UNIT IN THE COASTAL AREA OF THE TOGIAK PENINSULA AND THE PRIBILOFF ISLANDS (FIGURE 1). ALL MAPPING WILL UNDERGO 100 INTERNAL QUALITY CONTROL AND WILL BE VALIDATED USING CUSTOMIZED NWI VERIFICATION TOOLS DEVELOPED BY USFWS. FOUR DATA ITERATIONS OF USFWS QUALITY CONTROL WILL BE COMPLETED FOR EACH MAPPING AREA. QC ITERATION SUBMISSIONS WILL OCCUR NO LESS THAN EIGHT WEEKS APART.DATA DEVELOPMENT WILL BE CONDUCTED OVER A 2- TO 5-YEAR TIMEFRAME. THIS FUNDING OPPORTUNITY WILL SUPPORT ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PRODUCE CUSTOMIZED, SPATIALLY-EXPLICIT DATASETS THAT IDENTIFY WETLAND FEATURES AND ESTABLISH THEIR CONNECTIVITY WITHIN A WATERSHED CONTEXT. THE GREATEST COLLECTIVE IMPACT THE COHORT WILL HAVE WILL COME FROM THE INCREASED CAPACITY TO SERVE THE REGIONS? A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE: ENHANCING MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION AT SAINT MARY'S - A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE: ENHANCING MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION AT SAINT MARY'S REQUESTS FUNDING TO CREATE A NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE, LED BY A GRANT-FUNDED MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATOR, THAT INTEGRATES SUICIDE AWARENESS, PREVENTION, AND MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION WITHIN ALL ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES. THIS WILL INCLUDE INSTITUTIONALIZING A MENTAL HEALTH COALITION, ENHANCING COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS AND ACCESS TO SERVICES, DEVELOPING AND DISSEMINATING CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE OUTREACH MATERIALS, LAUNCHING A STUDENT-DRIVEN MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA REDUCTION CAMPAIGN, IMPLEMENTING A LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMMING AUDIT AND LETHAL MEANS AUDIT, EXPANDING MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD) SCREENING AND ASSESSMENTS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT/IMPLEMENTATION OF A MENTAL HEALTH BLUEPRINT. THE PROJECT WILL SERVE 1,246 STUDENTS ANNUALLY (3,738 TOTAL), AND FOCUSES ON STUDENTS WHO ARE PELL ELIGIBLE, FIRST-GENERATION OR REPRESENT MINORITY ETHNIC/RACIAL GROUPS OR SEXUAL PREFERENCES. ALMOST ALL (98.5%) OF WINONA CAMPUS STUDENTS ARE 18-24, AND 23.2% ARE PELL ELIGIBLE, 10.5% ARE FIRST-GENERATION, 20.7% COMPRISE AN UNDERREPRESENTED ETHNIC MINORITY GROUP, AND 15% HAD A MINORITY SEXUAL PREFERENCE (ACHA, 2020). AT THE TWIN CITIES CAMPUS, 42% IDENTIFY AS AN UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATION AND 17.8% AS FIRST-GENERATION. EDUCATIONAL SIGNAGE, SCHOOL CURRICULUM AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TOOLS WILL BE DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO INFORM LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS AND PROMOTE TECHNIQUES THAT CAN BE EMPLOYED.THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY AND PROMOTE HEALTHY FISH POPULATIONS. ALTHOUGH URBAN GROWTH IN KENAI AND SOLDOTNA IS ADVANTAGEOUS FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY, TRANSITION FROM VEGETATED LANDSCAPES TO IMPERVIOUS COVER CAN INCREASE STORMWATER RUNOFF. THIS IN TURN CAN INCREASE THE VOLUME OF WATER AND QUANTITY OF WATER QUALITY CONSTITUENTS (SEDIMENT, HEAVY METALS LIKE COPPER AND ZINC, NUTRIENTS, SALT) THAT ARE DELIVERED TO RECEIVING SURFACE WATER BODIES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN URBANIZING LOCATIONS NEAR THE KENAI RIVER, KNOWN NATIONALLY FOR ITS RECREATIONAL AND SUBSISTENCE SALMON FISHING. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO REDUCE IMPACTS OF STORMWATER RUNOFF ON RECEIVING WATER BODIES. A GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS ALSO TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT STORMWATER RUNOFF MANAGEMENT.
