HOW AND WHY ENDS USE MAY POSE PD RISK IS UNCLEAR AS THERE IS A LACK OF COMPREHENSIVE DATA ON USAGE BEHAVIORS, EXPOSURES, AND DISEASE OUTCOMES. FURTHER, THERE IS A LACK OF EARLY INDICATORS OF PD ASSOCIATED WITH ENDS USAGE, WHICH IMPEDES INITIAL DIAGNOSIS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. WE HYPOTHESIZE EARLY INDICATORS OF ADVERSE ENDS-RELATED ORAL HEALTH OUTCOMES CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND EXPLAINED BY VARIATIONS IN ENDS PREFERENCE/USAGE AND BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES. TO ADDRESS THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL ESTABLISH A BEHAVIOR-EXPOSURE- TOXICITY-DISEASE PARADIGM UTILIZING AIMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO EVALUATE ENDS USAGE AND CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS OF ORAL DISEASE (AIM 1), COMMON ENDS PRODUCTS AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF DISEASE (AIM 2), AND TRANSLATABLE INDICATORS OF DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY (AIM 3). THIS INNOVATIVE APPROACH WILL FACILITATE OUR KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE MECHANISMS AND BIOMARKERS OF ENDS-MEDIATED ORAL HEALTH EFFECTS THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY APPLIED TO DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. IN AIM 1, WE WILL RECRUIT COHORTS OF NEVER-ESTABLISHED TOBACCO USERS AND CURRENT EXCLUSIVE ENDS USERS TO EVALUATE ENDS USAGE BEHAVIORS, ORAL HEALTH, AND RISK FACTORS. IN THIS AIM, WE WILL EMPLOY AN ESTABLISHED SOCIAL MEDIA RECRUITMENT STRATEGY TO RECRUIT PARTICIPANTS AND EVALUATE PARTICIPANT CHARACTERISTICS, ENDS USAGE, AND ORAL HEALTH HISTORY VIA FOCUSED QUESTIONNAIRES. ADDITIONALLY, ENDS USAGE WILL BE EXAMINED THROUGH REAL-TIME MONITORING OF ENDS PUFFING TOPOGRAPHY. CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS OF DISEASE WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN ORAL HEALTH EXAM AND EXAMINATION OF THE SUBGINGIVAL MICROBIOME. TO ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF PRODUCT-BASED ENDS EXPOSURES WE WILL UTILIZE AN IN VITRO AIR LIQUID INTERFACE MODEL SYSTEM TO EXPOSE PRIMARY GINGIVAL KERATINOCYTE/MACROPHAGE SPHEROIDS TO AEROSOLS IN AIM 2. THESE EXPOSURE SCENARIOS WILL UTILIZE ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS FOR COMPARATIVE TOXICITY ASSESSMENTS WHILE ALSO INCORPORATING EXPOSURES REPRESENTATIVE OF ENDS USAGE FROM OUR RECRUITED PARTICIPANTS. SPECIFICALLY, THESE IN VITRO EXPERIMENTS WILL ASSESS BRAND-SPECIFIC MODULATION OF INFLAMMATION, OXIDATIVE STRESS, DNA DAMAGE/REPAIR, EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL TRANSITIONS, AND BACTERIAL INVASION. IN AIM 3, WE WILL UTILIZE A MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY APPROACH TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF ENDS USAGE BY THE EXAMINATION OF PARTICIPANT SALIVA, GINGIVAL CELLS, AND SUBGINGIVAL PLAQUES. HOWEVER, HOW AND WHY ENDS USE MAY POSE GI RISK IS UNCLEAR AS THERE IS A LACK OF COMPREHENSIVE DATA ON SMOKING BEHAVIORS, EXPOSURE, AND DISEASE OUTCOMES IN AA ENDS USERS. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT AA ENDS USERS MAY BE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ENDS-MEDIATED ORAL HEALTH OUTCOMES DUE TO VARIATIONS IN ENDS PREFERENCE, USAGE, AND BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES. TO ADDRESS THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL ESTABLISH A BEHAVIOR-EXPOSURE-TOXICITY-DISEASE PARADIGM UTILIZING AIMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO EVALUATE BEHAVIORS (AIM 1), COMMON ENDS PRODUCTS (AIM 2), AND SUSCEPTIBILITY (AIM 3). THIS INNOVATIVE APPROACH WILL FACILITATE THE IDENTIFICATION OF RISK FACTORS AND BIOMARKERS THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. IN AIM 1, WE WILL RECRUIT COHORTS OF CURRENT AA AND CAUCASIAN ENDS USERS AND NEVER-TOBACCO USERS TO EVALUATE PATTERNS OF ENDS USAGE BEHAVIORS, ORAL HEALTH, AND RISK FACTORS. IN THIS AIM, WE WILL EMPLOY QUESTIONNAIRES AND MOBILE ECOLOGICAL MOMENTARY ASSESSMENTS COUPLED WITH REAL-TIME MONITORING TO EXAMINE ENDS PUFF TOPOGRAPHY WITHIN EACH GROUP. BY USING THIS MIXED METHODS APPROACH, WE WILL LIMIT RECALL BIAS AND ALSO CAPTURE MOMENT TO MOMENT PHENOMENA THAT MAY OCCUR DIFFERENTIALLY IN THESE TWO ENDS USER GROUPS. TO ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF SPECIFIC GROUP AND PRODUCT-BASED ENDS EXPOSURE SCENARIOS WE WILL UTILIZE AN IN VITRO AIR LIQUID INTERFACE CELLULAR MODEL SYSTEM IN AIM 2. USING SPECIFIC GROUP EXPOSURE SCENARIOS (IDENTIFIED BY PUFF TOPOGRAPHY CHARACTERIZATION IN AIM 1) AND ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS FOR COMPARATIVE TOXICITY ASSESSMENTS WE WILL IDENTIFY DIFFERENTIAL BIOMARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH ENDS AEROSOL EXPOSURES. SPECIFICALLY, THIS WILL INCLUDE COMPARISONS OF CELLULAR RESPONSES INDUCED BY DIFFERING ENDS GENERATION PRODUCTS AND BRANDS AS WELL AS USAGE PATTERNS. IN AIM 3, WE WILL UTILIZE A MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY APPROACH TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENTIAL EXPOSURES IN OUR AA AND CAUCASIAN ENDS COHORTS BY USING PARTICIPANT SALIVA AND GINGIVAL CELLS TO IDENTIFY BIOMARKERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS, DNA DAMAGE, AND OTHER INDICATORS COMMONLY FOUND IN GI. THIS PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING PROJECT BUILDS ON CONNECTIONS AND EXPERTISE AMONG THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH EXPERIENCES & EDUCATION AT UL RESEARCH INSTITUTES, ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER, AND VINEY JONES LIBRARY. TOGETHER, THE TEAM WILL LEAD A COMMUNITY-FOCUSED PLANNING PROCESS THAT IDENTIFIES RISK AND RESILIENCE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN RURAL AREAS OF ARIZONA. THIS APPROACH LOOKS BEYOND DISASTER PROTOCOLS TO FOCUS ON MUTUAL LEARNING AND COMMUNITY TRANSMISSION OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING THE ROLES OF INFORMAL STEM LEARNING (ISL) AND ISL ORGANIZATIONS IN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. SEVERAL WORKSHOPS WILL SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPANTS IN IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING PRIORITY TOPICS, COMMUNITY MAPPING, AND PLANNING FOR FUTURE COLLABORATIONS. LIBRARIES WILL SERVE AS SPACES FOR, AND AGENTS OF, CONNECTION AND RESOURCE SHARING. THE PROJECT TEAM IS PREPARED TO FOCUS ON ANY AREA OF STEM IDENTIFIED BY PROJECT PARTICIPANTS WITH RESPECT TO DISASTER-RELATED COMMUNITY RISKS AND RESILIENCE. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IS INTERDISCIPLINARY AND BUILT ON STEM THINKING AND SAFETY, INCLUDING KNOWLEDGE OF ECOSYSTEMS, PHYSICS, CIVIL ENGINEERING, AND LAND MANAGEMENT. THIS APPROACH IS ROOTED IN THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH EXPERIENCES & EDUCATION'S PRACTICE OF BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES TO CREATE PLACE-BASED, CONTEXTUALIZED LEARNING RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS FOR SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY. IT IS ALSO SHAPED BY ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER'S WORK ON THE RURAL ACTIVATION AND INNOVATION NETWORK (RAIN), WHICH FOCUSES ON THE ROLE LEARNING ECOSYSTEMS PLAY IN RURAL STEM IDENTITY AND SELF-EFFICACY. USING WESTOBY & LATHOURAS' (2024) MULTI-LEVEL APPROACH TO PRACTICE, THIS PROJECT WILL INCLUDE IMPLICATE-, MICRO-, MEZZO-, AND MACRO-LEVEL WORK TO DESCRIBE HOW A CONSTELLATION OF ACTORS, SETTINGS, AND RESOURCES INTERACT AROUND INFORMAL STEM LEARNING IN RURAL AREAS. THIS APPROACH WILL BOTH GENERATE KNOWLEDGE WITH RESPECT TO INFORMAL STEM LEARNING IN RURAL AREAS AND PREPARE THE REGION FOR FUTURE COLLABORATIVE WORK WITH RESPECT TO DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. AS SUCH, THE PROJECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CONTRIBUTE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF STEM LEARNING ECOLOGIES. IN TOTAL, THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO SURFACE AND VALUE THE RANGE OF INTERESTS AND EXPERTISE AMONG ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTICIPATORY APPROACHES, THIS PROJECT WILL CALL ATTENTION TO THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY-DETERMINED PRIORITIES AND DEFINITIONS RELATED DISASTER RESILIENCE AND RISKS, AS OPPOSED TO PRIORITIES SET BY EXTERNAL ENTITIES. EARLY PERIODONTAL HEALTH IMPACTS OF ELECTRONIC NICOTINE DELIVERY SYSTEM (ENDS) USAGE - PROJECT SUMMARY THE USE OF ELECTRONIC NICOTINE DELIVERY SYSTEMS (ENDS) INCREASES THE RISK OF A NUMBER OF DISEASES INCLUDING THOSE OF THE ORAL CAVITY. SPECIFICALLY, OF CONCERN IS THE INDUCTION OF GINGIVAL INFLAMMATION AND INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO BACTERIAL INVASION, ULTIMATELY LEADING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE (PD). HOW AND WHY ENDS USE MAY POSE PD RISK IS UNCLEAR AS THERE IS A LACK OF COMPREHENSIVE DATA ON USAGE BEHAVIORS, EXPOSURES, AND DISEASE OUTCOMES. FURTHER, THERE IS A LACK OF EARLY INDICATORS OF PD ASSOCIATED WITH ENDS USAGE, WHICH IMPEDES INITIAL DIAGNOSIS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. WE HYPOTHESIZE EARLY INDICATORS OF ADVERSE ENDS-RELATED ORAL HEALTH OUTCOMES CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND EXPLAINED BY VARIATIONS IN ENDS PREFERENCE/USAGE AND BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES. TO ADDRESS THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL ESTABLISH A BEHAVIOR-EXPOSURE- TOXICITY-DISEASE PARADIGM UTILIZING AIMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO EVALUATE ENDS USAGE AND CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS OF ORAL DISEASE (AIM 1), COMMON ENDS PRODUCTS AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF DISEASE (AIM 2), AND TRANSLATABLE INDICATORS OF DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY (AIM 3). THIS INNOVATIVE APPROACH WILL FACILITATE OUR KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE MECHANISMS AND BIOMARKERS OF ENDS-MEDIATED ORAL HEALTH EFFECTS THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY APPLIED TO DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. IN AIM 1, WE WILL RECRUIT COHORTS OF NEVER-ESTABLISHED TOBACCO USERS AND CURRENT EXCLUSIVE ENDS USERS TO EVALUATE ENDS USAGE BEHAVIORS, ORAL HEALTH, AND RISK FACTORS. IN THIS AIM, WE WILL EMPLOY AN ESTABLISHED SOCIAL MEDIA RECRUITMENT STRATEGY TO RECRUIT PARTICIPANTS AND EVALUATE PARTICIPANT CHARACTERISTICS, ENDS USAGE, AND ORAL HEALTH HISTORY VIA FOCUSED QUESTIONNAIRES. ADDITIONALLY, ENDS USAGE WILL BE EXAMINED THROUGH REAL-TIME MONITORING OF ENDS PUFFING TOPOGRAPHY. CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS OF DISEASE WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN ORAL HEALTH EXAM AND EXAMINATION OF THE SUBGINGIVAL MICROBIOME. TO ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF PRODUCT-BASED ENDS EXPOSURES WE WILL UTILIZE AN IN VITRO AIR LIQUID INTERFACE MODEL SYSTEM TO EXPOSE PRIMARY GINGIVAL KERATINOCYTE/MACROPHAGE SPHEROIDS TO AEROSOLS IN AIM 2. THESE EXPOSURE SCENARIOS WILL UTILIZE ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS FOR COMPARATIVE TOXICITY ASSESSMENTS WHILE ALSO INCORPORATING EXPOSURES REPRESENTATIVE OF ENDS USAGE FROM OUR RECRUITED PARTICIPANTS. SPECIFICALLY, THESE IN VITRO EXPERIMENTS WILL ASSESS BRAND-SPECIFIC MODULATION OF INFLAMMATION, OXIDATIVE STRESS, DNA DAMAGE/REPAIR, EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL TRANSITIONS, AND BACTERIAL INVASION. IN AIM 3, WE WILL UTILIZE A MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY APPROACH TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF ENDS USAGE BY THE EXAMINATION OF PARTICIPANT SALIVA, GINGIVAL CELLS, AND SUBGINGIVAL PLAQUES. THESE REPRESENT READILY AVAILABLE MATRICES TO EXAMINE EARLY INDICATORS OF ORAL DISEASE AND PD INITIATION INCLUDING BIOMARKERS OF INFLAMMATION, OXIDATIVE STRESS, DNA DAMAGE/REPAIR, EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL TRANSITIONS, AND MICROBIAL ALTERATIONS. SPECIFICALLY, WE AIM TO ESTABLISH A PATHWAY BETWEEN PARTICIPANT CHARACTERISTICS, ENDS USAGE, AND TOXICOLOGICAL MECHANISMS CONTRIBUTING TO PD DEVELOPMENT THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH.

HOWEVER, HOW AND WHY ENDS USE MAY POSE GI RISK IS UNCLEAR AS THERE IS A LACK OF COMPREHENSIVE DATA ON SMOKING BEHAVIORS, EXPOSURE, AND DISEASE OUTCOMES IN AA ENDS USERS. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT AA ENDS USERS MAY BE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ENDS-MEDIATED ORAL HEALTH OUTCOMES DUE TO VARIATIONS IN ENDS PREFERENCE, USAGE, AND BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES. TO ADDRESS THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL ESTABLISH A BEHAVIOR-EXPOSURE-TOXICITY-DISEASE PARADIGM UTILIZING AIMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO EVALUATE BEHAVIORS (AIM 1), COMMON ENDS PRODUCTS (AIM 2), AND SUSCEPTIBILITY (AIM 3). THIS INNOVATIVE APPROACH WILL FACILITATE THE IDENTIFICATION OF RISK FACTORS AND BIOMARKERS THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO DISEASE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. IN AIM 1, WE WILL RECRUIT COHORTS OF CURRENT AA AND CAUCASIAN ENDS USERS AND NEVER-TOBACCO USERS TO EVALUATE PATTERNS OF ENDS USAGE BEHAVIORS, ORAL HEALTH, AND RISK FACTORS. IN THIS AIM, WE WILL EMPLOY QUESTIONNAIRES AND MOBILE ECOLOGICAL MOMENTARY ASSESSMENTS COUPLED WITH REAL-TIME MONITORING TO EXAMINE ENDS PUFF TOPOGRAPHY WITHIN EACH GROUP. BY USING THIS MIXED METHODS APPROACH, WE WILL LIMIT RECALL BIAS AND ALSO CAPTURE MOMENT TO MOMENT PHENOMENA THAT MAY OCCUR DIFFERENTIALLY IN THESE TWO ENDS USER GROUPS. TO ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF SPECIFIC GROUP AND PRODUCT-BASED ENDS EXPOSURE SCENARIOS WE WILL UTILIZE AN IN VITRO AIR LIQUID INTERFACE CELLULAR MODEL SYSTEM IN AIM 2. USING SPECIFIC GROUP EXPOSURE SCENARIOS (IDENTIFIED BY PUFF TOPOGRAPHY CHARACTERIZATION IN AIM 1) AND ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS FOR COMPARATIVE TOXICITY ASSESSMENTS WE WILL IDENTIFY DIFFERENTIAL BIOMARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH ENDS AEROSOL EXPOSURES. SPECIFICALLY, THIS WILL INCLUDE COMPARISONS OF CELLULAR RESPONSES INDUCED BY DIFFERING ENDS GENERATION PRODUCTS AND BRANDS AS WELL AS USAGE PATTERNS. IN AIM 3, WE WILL UTILIZE A MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY APPROACH TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENTIAL EXPOSURES IN OUR AA AND CAUCASIAN ENDS COHORTS BY USING PARTICIPANT SALIVA AND GINGIVAL CELLS TO IDENTIFY BIOMARKERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS, DNA DAMAGE, AND OTHER INDICATORS COMMONLY FOUND IN GI. SPECIFICALLY, WE AIM TO ESTABLISH A PATHWAY BETWEEN ENDS PREFERENCE, PUFF TOPOGRAPHY, AND TOXICOLOGICAL PATHWAYS CONTRIBUTING GI DEVELOPMENT THAT MAY BE EXACERBATED IN THE AA POPULATION. OUR PROJECT OUTCOMES WILL BE A BIOMARKER PANEL THAT MAY PROVIDE CRITICAL INSIGHT INTO ENDS-MEDIATED GI SUSCEPTIBILITY IN AA.

RURAL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS THROUGH INFORMAL STEM LEARNING: COMMUNITY-IDENTIFIED RISK & RESILIENCE -DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION ARE SYSTEMIC WAYS TO MITIGATE AND MANAGE EVENTS, SUCH AS THE CATASTROPHIC NATURAL DISASTERS THAT HAVE OCCURRED ACROSS THE US IN RECENT YEARS. THIS PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING PROJECT BUILDS ON CONNECTIONS AND EXPERTISE AMONG THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH EXPERIENCES & EDUCATION AT UL RESEARCH INSTITUTES, ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER, AND VINEY JONES LIBRARY. TOGETHER, THE TEAM WILL LEAD A COMMUNITY-FOCUSED PLANNING PROCESS THAT IDENTIFIES RISK AND RESILIENCE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN RURAL AREAS OF ARIZONA. THIS APPROACH LOOKS BEYOND DISASTER PROTOCOLS TO FOCUS ON MUTUAL LEARNING AND COMMUNITY TRANSMISSION OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING THE ROLES OF INFORMAL STEM LEARNING (ISL) AND ISL ORGANIZATIONS IN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. SEVERAL WORKSHOPS WILL SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPANTS IN IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING PRIORITY TOPICS, COMMUNITY MAPPING, AND PLANNING FOR FUTURE COLLABORATIONS. LIBRARIES WILL SERVE AS SPACES FOR, AND AGENTS OF, CONNECTION AND RESOURCE SHARING. THE PROJECT TEAM IS PREPARED TO FOCUS ON ANY AREA OF STEM IDENTIFIED BY PROJECT PARTICIPANTS WITH RESPECT TO DISASTER-RELATED COMMUNITY RISKS AND RESILIENCE. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IS INTERDISCIPLINARY AND BUILT ON STEM THINKING AND SAFETY, INCLUDING KNOWLEDGE OF ECOSYSTEMS, PHYSICS, CIVIL ENGINEERING, AND LAND MANAGEMENT. THIS APPROACH IS ROOTED IN THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH EXPERIENCES & EDUCATION'S PRACTICE OF BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES TO CREATE PLACE-BASED, CONTEXTUALIZED LEARNING RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS FOR SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY. IT IS ALSO SHAPED BY ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER'S WORK ON THE RURAL ACTIVATION AND INNOVATION NETWORK (RAIN), WHICH FOCUSES ON THE ROLE LEARNING ECOSYSTEMS PLAY IN RURAL STEM IDENTITY AND SELF-EFFICACY. USING WESTOBY & LATHOURAS' (2024) MULTI-LEVEL APPROACH TO PRACTICE, THIS PROJECT WILL INCLUDE IMPLICATE-, MICRO-, MEZZO-, AND MACRO-LEVEL WORK TO DESCRIBE HOW A CONSTELLATION OF ACTORS, SETTINGS, AND RESOURCES INTERACT AROUND INFORMAL STEM LEARNING IN RURAL AREAS. THIS APPROACH WILL BOTH GENERATE KNOWLEDGE WITH RESPECT TO INFORMAL STEM LEARNING IN RURAL AREAS AND PREPARE THE REGION FOR FUTURE COLLABORATIVE WORK WITH RESPECT TO DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. AS SUCH, THE PROJECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CONTRIBUTE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF STEM LEARNING ECOLOGIES. IN TOTAL, THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO SURFACE AND VALUE THE RANGE OF INTERESTS AND EXPERTISE AMONG ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTICIPATORY APPROACHES, THIS PROJECT WILL CALL ATTENTION TO THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY-DETERMINED PRIORITIES AND DEFINITIONS RELATED DISASTER RESILIENCE AND RISKS, AS OPPOSED TO PRIORITIES SET BY EXTERNAL ENTITIES. THE PROJECT WILL INVITE ALL MEMBERS OF A GIVEN COMMUNITY AND GEOGRAPHIC AREA TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKSHOPS. THE NETWORK SAMPLING STRATEGY AND PARTICIPATORY COMMUNITY APPROACH WILL ALSO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AGENCIES, INDUSTRY, AND OTHER ACTORS AROUND DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. THIS PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE ADVANCING INFORMAL STEM LEARNING (AISL) PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO ADVANCE NEW APPROACHES TO, AND EVIDENCE-BASED UNDERSTANDING OF, THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF STEM LEARNING IN INFORMAL ENVIRONMENTS. THIS INCLUDES PROVIDING EVERYONE MULTIPLE PATHWAYS FOR ACCESSING AND ENGAGING IN STEM LEARNING EXPERIENCES.
