DRUG FREE VIGO COUNTY - PREVENTION EFFORTS REDUCE PRESCRIPTION DRUG USE AMONG VIGO COUNTY YOUTH. - DRUG FREE VIGO COUNTY IS A GRASSROOTS COALITION THAT PROVIDES PREVENTION EFFORTS TO REDUCE ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, DRUG, AND PRESCRIPTION DRUG USE AMONG VIGO COUNTY YOUTH IN INDIANA. THROUGH RESEARCH ON LOCAL DATA, THE COALITION HAS DETERMINED THAT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE AN ISSUE AMONG OUR YOUTH - IN PARTICULAR, 12TH GRADE STUDENTS. OVERALL, OUR YOUTH MISUSE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AT A RATE HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. ADDITIONAL CONCERNS ARE THE LACK OF CONCERN AMONG OUR YOUTH ON THE DANGERS OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS - WITH MORE THAN 70% OF MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS STATING THESE AREN'T "DANGEROUS". OUR COALITION INTENDS TO UTILIZE MULTIPLE STRATEGIES TO REDUCE USE AMONG YOUTH - BY CREATING UNIVERSAL PREVENTION PROGRAMS IN THE SCHOOLS, A MEDIA TOOL KIT TO BE CREATED BY OUR YOUTH AND USED IN THE SCHOOLS, AND FURTHER WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY TO BRING A SPOTLIGHT TO THE ISSUES FACING OUR YOUTH. A HIGHLIGHT OF OUR PROGRAM IS THE CREATION OF A YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMP - AND OUR GOAL TO HELP CREATE FUTURE SERVANT LEADERS...AND AGENTS OF CHANGE!
