MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING FOR GREEN AND LAFAYETTE COUNTIES - THIS PROJECT INTENDS TO SERVE THE RURAL COMMUNITIES OF GREEN AND LAFAYETTE COUNTIES BY PROVIDING THREE LEVELS OF MENTAL HEALTH SKILL TRAININGS THROUGH LIVINGWORKS PROGRAMS, PROVIDING CARE PROVIDERS, FRONT-LINE PROFESSIONALS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND ASSIST PEOPLE WHO ARE AT RISK FOR SUICIDE. THIS COMMUNITY FOCUSED APPROACH ADDRESSES THE GEOGRAPHICAL BARRIERS THAT RURAL COMMUNITIES FACE BY TRAINING PEOPLE LOCALLY. THE LIVINGWORKS TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE AN EFFECTIVE APPROACH FOR DETECTING, REFERRING AND SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS OR EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE. THE APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM (ASIST) AND IS LISTED ON THE BEST PRACTICE REGISTRY OF THE SUICIDE PREVENTION RESOURCE CENTER. ASIST PROVIDES CARE PROFESSIONALS WITH SKILLS TO CONNECT, UNDERSTAND AND ASSIST PEOPLE AT RISK OF SUICIDE. OVER THE GRANT PERIOD, 120 PROFESSIONALS WILL BE TRAINED IN ASIST, WITH 24 PEOPLE TRAINED EACH YEAR. FROM THOSE TRAINED IN ASIST, 10 PEOPLE WILL BE RECRUITED FOR THE TRAIN-THE-TRAINER TRAINING, IN ORDER TO HAVE LOCAL CERTIFIED SAFETALK TRAINERS WHO CAN CONDUCT SAFETALK WORKSHOPS TO FRONTLINE PROFESSIONALS INCLUDING EDUCATORS, EMERGENCY MEDICAL STAFF, CLERGY. SKILLS TAUGHT IN ASIST, SAFETALK, AND THE ONLINE START PROGRAMS ALLOW FOR PEOPLE TO RECOGNIZE AND DETECT SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS EARLIER IN THE LIFE TRAJECTORIES OF TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS, GETTING THEM PROFESSIONAL SERVICES EARLIER. DE-ESCALATION SKILLS ARE BUILT INTO THE FRAMEWORK AND SKILLS TAUGHT IN THESE TRAININGS THROUGH SKILLS THAT REDUCE STIGMA, REDUCE INTENSITY, REDUCE ISOLATION, AND ENABLE ACTIONS THAT INCREASE SAFETY AND FACILITATES FOLLOW UP CARE. IT IS EXPECTED THAT 6 MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS WILL COLLABORATE OVER THE ENTIRE GRANT PERIOD FOR REFERRALS. A MENTAL HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL OVERSEE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TRAININGS, MONITOR PROGRESS, AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE WITH DEVELOPING EVALUATION SURVEYS AND REFERRAL PROTOCOLS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT OVER THE GRANT PERIOD THAT 2% OF THE POPULATION IN GREEN AND LAFAYETTE COUNTIES WILL BE TRAINED IN SAFETALK WORKSHOPS, WITH 3% OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC PARTICIPATING IN THE ONE-HOUR ONLINE TRAINING. MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS WILL HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR TRAINING AND HELP TO REDUCE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH SEEKING TREATMENT. THESE CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS WILL SERVE AS MOMENTUM FOR INCREASING THE GENERAL POPULATION'S MENTAL HEALTH KNOWLEDGE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING. AND IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT 6 MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS WILL COLLABORATE TO TAKE REFERRALS.

SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE TUTORING, SERVING AS A ROLE MODEL, CHARACTER BUILDING, READING/LITERACY, AND MATH LITERACY/OPERATIONS AND AGE APPROPRIATE STEM ACTIVITIES. THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS EDUCATION. AT THE END OF THE 3 YEAR GRANT AT LEAST 300 STUDENTS AND YOUTH WILL BE SERVED. CHILDREN SERVED WILL BE SPECIAL OR EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS, OR CHILDREN IN CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LIMIT THEIR ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, OR EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED OR HAVE BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES. THE ANNUAL CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $131,060 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $ 17430 NON-FEDERAL RESOURCES. THE FGP PROVIDES LOW INCOME OLDER ADULTS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR PURPOSEFUL ENGAGEMENT IN THEIR COMMUNITY SCHOOLS OR YOUTH PROGRAMS THROUGH INTER-GENERATIONAL VOLUNTEERING. HAVING SOUTHWESTERN WISCONSIN COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM, INC. (SOUTHWEST CAP) WHO HAS A MISSION OF PROVIDING PROGRAMS TO LOW INCOME PERSONS AND FAMILIES AS A SPONSOR CONNECTS THE LOW INCOME PARTICIPANTS TO OTHER SERVICES AND PROGRAMS.

THE HISPANIC/LATINO POPULATION HAS GROWN BY OVER 6% SINCE 2000, WITH 9% OF STUDENTS IN THE SIX SCHOOL DISTRICTS LISTED AS HISPANIC. ON THE 2019 YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY, LATINX YOUTH REPORTED MORE PRESCRIPTION PAIN MEDICINE MISUSE AND HEROIN AND METHAMPHETAMINE USE THAN THEIR WHITE PEERS. THE GOALS OF BETTER BRODHEAD?S CARA PROJECT IS TO (1) REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LATINX HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH IN GREEN COUNTY THAT MISUSE PRESCRIPTION PAIN MEDICATION AND (2) INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF GREEN COUNTY LATINX HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO FEEL THEIR PARENTS WOULD THINK IT IS WRONG OR VERY WRONG FOR THEM TO TAKE A PRESCRIPTION DRUG WITHOUT A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION. BY ADDRESSING THE LOCAL CONDITIONS THAT PUT LATINX YOUTH AT RISK FOR DRUG USE, BETTER BRODHEAD WILL UTILIZE THE SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR COMMUNITY CHANGE. AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS OFFERED IN BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH WILL INCREASE ACCESS TO PREVENTION INFORMATION. TRAINING ON CULTURAL COMPETENCY FOR PROFESSIONALS AND WORKING WITH THEM TO CREATE TRAUMA INFORMED ORGANIZATIONS WILL INCREASE ACCESS TO SERVICES AND AWARENESS OF TREATMENTS NEEDED FOR THIS POPULATION.

THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS EDUCATION / K-12 SUCCESS. AT THE END OF THE 3 YEAR GRANT IT IS ANTICIPATED ALMOST 100 STUDENTS WILL BE SERVED. THE ANNUAL CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $30,053 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $3,336 NON-FEDERAL RESOURCES AND $250 IN LOCAL RESOURCES.
