ZOO ATLANTA WILL INVESTIGATE THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN GORILLAS, ORANGUTANS, CHIMPANZEES, AND BONOBOS USING THE INVESTIGATIVE TOOLS OF PATHOLOGY. THE WORK WILL ADVANCE THE RESEARCH COMPILED THROUGH THE IMLS-FUNDED GREAT APE HEART PROJECT BY UTILIZING THE PROJECT DATABASE AND NEW DIGITAL TOOLS TO COMPARE CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGIC DATA TO DETERMINE WHICH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS ARE MOST PREDICTIVE OF HEART DISEASE. THE RESEARCH TEAM, INCLUDING A PATHOLOGY-DEDICATED POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW AND VETERINARY STUDENTS, WILL ALSO ASSESS APES FOR HYPERTENSION AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS, AND INVESTIGATE POTENTIAL CAUSES FOR FATAL ANEURYSMS. THE PROJECT WILL ANSWER FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN APES, WHILE TRAINING A NEW GENERATION OF ZOO PROFESSIONALS. THE RESULTS WILL ENABLE THE NATION'S ZOOS TO BETTER PREVENT AND TREAT DISEASE AND ENHANCE STEWARDSHIP OF THESE ENDANGERED LIVING COLLECTIONS.

AS A RESULT OF THE PROJECT, THE NEW VEHICLE WILL IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE VETERINARY MEDICINE TEAM AND RESULT IN SAFER METHODS FOR THE ZOO TO TRANSPORT ANIMALS.

"ZOO ATLANTA WILL MAKE HVAC SYSTEM UPGRADES, BY PURCHASING ONE FURNACE AND SIX HVAC UNITS FOR THREE PRIORITY ANIMAL AREAS ON THE ZOO'S CAMPUS. THE PROJECT WILL MAKE NECESSARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS FOR 93 ANIMALS HOUSED IN THE OUTBACK STATION BARN, GORILLA HOLDING BUILDING, AND WIELAND WILDLIFE HOME. THE ZOO WILL UPGRADE TO MORE EFFICIENT, MULTIFUNCTIONAL HVAC SYSTEMS TO DELIVER EXEMPLARY STEWARDSHIP OF THE COLLECTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ENTRUSTED TO ITS CARE. IN ADDITION TO PURCHASING AND INSTALLING THE NEW SYSTEMS, ZOO STAFF WILL ALSO MONITOR THE TEMPERATURE AND HVAC EFFICIENCY IN THOSE AREAS TO PRESERVE ANIMAL HEALTH AND ENCOURAGE NATURAL BEHAVIORS OF THE ANIMALS. ZOO ATLANTA DEMONSTRATES PROGRESSIVE STEWARDSHIP BY SHOWCASING ITS ANIMALS AS AMBASSADORS OF CONSERVATION FOR THEIR COUNTERPARTS IN THE WILD. THE PROJECT WILL FURTHER THE ZOO'S MISSION AND SUPPORT ITS STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL TO MAINTAIN A LEADERSHIP POSITION IN ANIMAL CARE AND MANAGEMENT."
