CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF TENNESSEE'S MISSION IS "FOLLOWING THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST, CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE DIOCESE OF NASHVILLE ADVOCATES FOR AND PROVIDES SERVICES WHICH ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE IN NEED", AND THE TENNESSEE OFFICE FOR REFUGEES' MISSION IS "TO FOSTER GROWTH, INTEGRATION AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL, TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT TO REFUGEES AND THE AGENCIES THAT SERVE THEM IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE". THE PROPOSED VISTA PROJECT ALIGNS WITH THE EDUCATION FOCUS AREA. THE GOAL OF THE VISTA PROJECT IS TO IMPROVE THE FUTURES OF REFUGEE YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS BY PAIRING THEM WITH A MENTOR WHO WILL ENCOURAGE THEM TO COMPLETE HIGH SCHOOL, AND SET (AND WORK TOWARDS) GOALS THAT WILL PROVIDE THEM WITH GREATER ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES. ADDITIONALLY, A FOCUS ON IN-HOME ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUTORING WILL ENSURE THAT PARTICIPANTS WHO ARE HELD BACK FROM GREATER OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE OF LIMITED ENGLISH WILL NOW BE ABLE TO REACH HIGHER GOALS. THE PROGRAM EXPECTS TO BENEFIT 225 REFUGEE YOUTH AGES 15-24 AS WELL AS ANOTHER 100 ADULT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. SEVEN VISTA MEMBERS (SIX MEMBERS AND ONE VISTA LEADER) WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT BY PERFORMING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS DEVELOPING A CURRICULUM FOR REFUGEE YOUTH AND THEIR MENTORS AS WELL AS CREATING ONE FOR ADULT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND THEIR IN-HOME TUTORS; RECRUITING, TRAINING, AND MATCHING MENTORS WITH REFUGEE YOUTH TO SUPPORT THEIR EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT GOALS; AND RECRUITING, TRAINING, AND MATCHING ADULT REFUGEE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS WITH VOLUNTEER TUTORS. THIS PROJECT IS ANTICIPATED FOR FOUR YEARS TO ALLOW FOR PROPER DEVELOPMENT, TESTING, ADJUSTMENTS, AND SUSTAINABILITY.
