NARRATIVES EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OUR LEGAL NAME IS UNITED WAY OF EAST MISSISSIPPI. ESTABLISHED IN MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI IN 1960 BY LOCAL BUSINESS AND CHURCH LEADERS, OUR ORGANIZATION IS NOW A FUNDING SOURCE FOR 22 LOCAL NONPROFITS AS WELL AS SEVERAL IN-HOUSE COMMUNITY IMPACT PROGRAMS.THE MISSION OF THE UNITED WAY IS TO IMPROVE LIVES BY MOBILIZING THE CARING POWER OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH GIVING, ADVOCATING AND VOLUNTEERING. THE UNITED WAY OF EAST MISSISSIPPI HAS BEEN A PROUD SPONSOR OF THE HAS ENJOYED A FRUITFUL PARTNERSHIP FOR 44 YEARS. AN ESTIMATED 300 RSVP VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE OVER THE TERM OF THIS 3-YEAR GRANT. OF THIS NUMBER, AT LEAST 160 RSVP UNDUPLICATED VOLUNTEERS WILL BE PLACED IN OUTCOME ASSIGNMENTS. SOME IF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE: DELIVERING HOT MEALS TO HOME BOUND AND LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS, IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION OF INDIVIDUALS IN NEED, ASSISTING AT FOOD PANTRIES/MASS FEEDING AGENCIES, ASSISTING WITH DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RECOVERY, PROVIDING TUTORING SERVICES TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE GAIN A BETTER EDUCATION. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS HEALTHY FUTURES. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE HEALTHIER, RECEIVE MORE NUTRITIOUS FOOD THAN THEY WOULD OTHERWISE, BE PREPARED TO MINIMIZE OR AVOID DISASTERS, OR TO RE-GAIN A REASONABLE LIVING STANDARD AFTER SUFFERING A DISASTER, SAVE MONEY FROM NOT HAVING TO USE A FOR-PROFIT TAX PREPARATION SERVICE, AND ASSISTING MEDICARE- ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS BY NAVIGATING THE MANY MEDICARE OPTIONS AND LOWERING THEIR PRESCRIPTION COSTS BY PROVIDING THE INDIVIDUALS PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT CARDS. THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $63.490 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $36,572 FROM LOCAL SOURCES, AS DOCUMENTED ELSEWHERE.
