EACH YEAR FACULTY IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES ARE INVITED TO APPLY TO MAA NREUP FOR A GRANT TO HOST A RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES PROGRAM AT THEIR OWN CAMPUS. NREUP IS STRUCTURED BOTH TO INCREASE UNDERGRADUATE COMPLETION RATES AND TO ENCOURAGE RISING SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, AND SENIOR UNDERGRADUATES TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDY THROUGH A RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AT THEIR HOME INSTITUTIONS. NREUP REACHES STUDENTS AT A CRITICAL POINT IN THEIR CAREER PATH - MIDWAY THROUGH THEIR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS. AS COURSE WORK BECOMES MORE ABSTRACT, MANY PROMISING STUDENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO ADJUST TO THE DEMANDS OF A MAJOR IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES, BUT WITH A STRONG CONNECTION TO A FACULTY MENTOR ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE NREUP, STUDENTS RECEIVE THE TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, CONFIDENCE AND EXPERIENCE THAT HELP THEM SUCCEED. IN MORE DETAIL, RISING JUNIORS AND SENIORS TYPICALLY HAVE A STRONG BACKGROUND IN CALCULUS, A MORE ADVANCED MATHEMATICS COURSE SUCH AS LINEAR ALGEBRA OR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, AND SOME EXPOSURE TO THEORETICAL MATHEMATICS AS REQUIRED FOR THEIR MAJOR. AT THIS TRANSITION POINT, BETWEEN LOWER DIVISION AND UPPER DIVISION STUDIES, FACULTY WILL PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING THAT SUPPORTS AND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDIES AND CAREERS IN MATHEMATICS. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PROGRESS AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY IS MONITORED THROUGH THE NREUP. | National Science Foundation | ENHANCING PROGRAM REVIEW TO IMPROVE UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY TAKING IMPORTANT FOUNDATIONAL STEPS TO TRANSFORM THE CULTURE AND IMPACT OF PROGRAM REVIEW IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES. ENHANCING PROGRAM REVIEW IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION (E-PRIME) WILL UTILIZE THE MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA?S NEWLY LAUNCHED PROGRAM REVIEW GUIDELINES (MAA PRG) TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT, EVALUATE, AND PROMOTE AN ENHANCED PROGRAM REVIEW (EPR) MODEL. THIS EPR MODEL WILL OFFER A MORE PRODUCTIVE, COLLABORATIVE, PURPOSEFUL ALTERNATIVE TO OFTEN PERFUNCTORY APPROACHES TO THE PROGRAM REVIEW REQUIREMENT FOR UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, SHIFTING THE FOCUS FROM COMPLIANCE TO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH. E-PRIME?S DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE EPR MODEL WILL IMPROVE ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM REVIEW PROCESS, ENSURE DEPARTMENTS HAVE ACCESS TO A DIVERSE POOL OF WELL-TRAINED EXTERNAL CONSULTANTS, INCREASE FACULTY OWNERSHIP OVER THE REVIEW PROCESS AND SUBSEQUENT OUTCOMES, INCREASE PRODUCTIVE COLLABORATION BETWEEN DEPARTMENTS AND ADMINISTRATORS, PROVIDE STRUCTURES AND SUPPORT FOR DEPARTMENTS TO ACT ON THEIR FINDINGS, DISSEMINATE OUTCOMES, AND ENSURE THAT EPR SERVES A DIVERSE RANGE OF INSTITUTIONS. IN LINE WITH IUSE:EDU GOALS, E-PRIME WILL SUPPORT THE CHANGES AND PROGRESS NEEDED TO HELP IMPROVE UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. E-PRIME WILL ENGAGE 12 DEPARTMENTS IN THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED EPR PROCESS, INCLUDING SUSTAINABLE TRAINING STRUCTURES, SUPPORT FOR AND MONITORING OF FOLLOW-UP ACTIONS, AND IDENTIFYING STRATEGIES AND BARRIERS TO ACTING ON RESULTING RECOMMENDATIONS. THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON IMPROVING ALL STAGES OF THE PROGRAM REVIEW PROCESS AND SUPPORTING CHANGES NEEDED TO IMPROVE UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION, WHICH CAN ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A STRONGER STEM WORKFORCE, BETTER PREPARED STEM GRADUATE STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS, AND MORE EFFECTIVE K-12 MATHEMATICS TEACHERS. FIVE GOALS WILL GUIDE THE PROJECT TEAM'S EFFORTS. FIRST, IS TO DESIGN AND EVALUATE A TRAINING PROGRAM, BASED ON THE NEW MAA PRG, THAT APPROPRIATELY SERVES A DIVERSE GROUP OF MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTS AND EXTERNAL CONSULTANTS. SECOND, IS TO RECRUIT AND TRAIN A DIVERSE GROUP OF EXTERNAL EPR CONSULTANTS TO SUPPORT MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTS IN CONDUCTING AN EPR USING THE NEW MAA PRG. THIRD, IS TO TRAIN AND SUPPORT MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTS IN CONDUCTING A SUCCESSFUL EPR WITH A FOCUS ON FIVE KEY AREAS THAT CULTIVATE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN AN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS PROGRAM: INCLUSIVE CULTURE, ENGAGED FACULTY, PURPOSEFUL CURRICULUM, EVIDENCE-BASED PEDAGOGY, AND FIRST-YEAR/TRANSFER STUDENT SUCCESS. FOURTH, IS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR DEPARTMENTS TO IMPLEMENT FOLLOW-UP ACTIONS BASED ON EPR DATA AND RECOMMENDATIONS. FIFTH, IS TO EVALUATE, DOCUMENT, AND DISSEMINATE THE IMPACT OF EPR ON PARTICIPATING PROGRAMS BY COLLECTING DATA, SUMMARIZING LESSONS LEARNED, AND PREPARING CASE STUDIES FOCUSED ON PROGRESS IN THE FIVE KEY AREAS. OVER THE PAST DECADE, SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT INNOVATIONS HAVE EMERGED TO ADDRESS PARTICULAR CHALLENGES IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS, WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO HELPING STUDENTS DEVELOP THE BASIC MATHEMATICS PROFICIENCY THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN STEM. CONCURRENTLY, THERE HAS BEEN A RISE OF TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY AT RESEARCH-INTENSIVE INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO INFLUENCE INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSEWORK. WITH A GOAL TO HELP THE NATION MEET ITS STEM WORKFORCE NEEDS, THIS CONVENING WILL EXPLORE HOW THESE TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY CAN LEVERAGE EFFECTIVE INNOVATIONS TO CREATE A NATIONALLY SCALABLE STRUCTURE FOR IMPROVING STUDENT EXPERIENCES AND SUCCESS IN INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSES. REFORMS IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION THAT ADDRESS COLLEGE COMPLETION AND EQUITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION ARE ESSENTIAL TO MEETING THE NATION?S STEM WORKFORCE AND NATIONAL SECURITY NEEDS. THERE ARE MANY INNOVATIVE EFFORTS ADDRESSING THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENTRY-LEVEL MATHEMATICS COURSES, AND NUMEROUS PROJECTS AND INSTITUTIONS HAVE CREATED, PILOTED, AND OCCASIONALLY REPLICATED EFFECTIVE REFORM EFFORTS THAT OVERCAME PARTICULAR CHALLENGES, LIKE THE NEED TO REFORM PEDAGOGY OR ATTEND TO GENDER EQUITY. THIS CONVENING AIMS TO ADDRESS STRUCTURAL BARRIERS TO SYSTEMIC REFORM THAT PREVENT IMPLEMENTATION OF MANY OF THESE RESEARCH-BACKED INNOVATIONS AT SCALE. THE PROJECT ASPIRES TO LEVERAGE CURRENT PRACTICES, THAT DISTRIBUTE MUCH OF THE ENTRY-LEVEL MATHEMATICS COURSE TEACHING AND COORDINATION TO TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY, AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW PATHWAYS TO REFORM. AS SUCH, THE CONVENING WILL BRING TOGETHER MORE THAN 40 STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY, TO PRODUCE A CONCEPT PAPER ARTICULATING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY TO DEVELOP NEW SOLUTIONS TO RECOGNIZED OBSTACLES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS IN INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSES AND TO UNDERSTAND WAYS IN WHICH TO SCALE RESEARCH-BASED EFFORTS AND INNOVATIONS THAT HAVE SHOWN PROMISE IN INCREASING STUDENT SUCCESS IN THESE COURSES. IN ADDITION, THE CONVENING WILL DRAFT STRUCTURES FOR CHANGE AND WILL LAY THE GROUNDWORK, CENTERED ON BUILDING NETWORKED COMMUNITIES OF TEACHING-FOCUSED MATHEMATICS FACULTY AT RESEARCH-INTENSIVE UNIVERSITIES, FOR FUTURE EFFORTS THAT COULD ACCELERATE THE UPTAKE OF RESEARCH-BASED SOLUTIONS TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSES. BUILDING FROM TWO PRIOR OFFERINGS IN 2020 AND 2021 THAT INVOLVED 350 AND 400 PARTICIPANTS, RESPECTIVELY, THE 2022 CONFERENCE WILL INCLUDE SIX MAIN ACTIVITIES FOR PARTICIPATING STUDENTS: (1) OUR STORIES TALKS, WHERE RECENT PHD RECIPIENTS WILL SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES; (2) CRASH COURSES THAT PROVIDE BRIEF OVERVIEWS OF FIELDS OF MATHEMATICS COMMON IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH; (3) A SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES PANEL; (4) A STUDENT EXPERIENCES PANEL; (5) TWO PLENARY PRESENTATIONS; AND (6) TWO VIRTUAL NETWORKING LUNCHES. TOO OFTEN, STUDENTS CAN BE EXCLUDED FROM EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ?IN THE KNOW?, BE THAT DUE TO INSUFFICIENT MENTORSHIP, UNDERDEVELOPED INSTITUTIONAL ADVISING SYSTEMS, OR OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. NREUP IS STRUCTURED BOTH TO INCREASE UNDERGRADUATE COMPLETION RATES AND TO ENCOURAGE RISING SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, AND SENIOR UNDERGRADUATES TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDY THROUGH A RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AT THEIR HOME INSTITUTIONS. NREUP REACHES STUDENTS AT A CRITICAL POINT IN THEIR CAREER PATH - MIDWAY THROUGH THEIR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS. AS COURSE WORK BECOMES MORE ABSTRACT, MANY PROMISING STUDENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO ADJUST TO THE DEMANDS OF A MAJOR IN THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES, BUT WITH A STRONG CONNECTION TO A FACULTY MENTOR ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE NREUP, STUDENTS RECEIVE THE TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, CONFIDENCE AND EXPERIENCE THAT HELP THEM SUCCEED. IN MORE DETAIL, RISING JUNIORS AND SENIORS TYPICALLY HAVE A STRONG BACKGROUND IN CALCULUS, A MORE ADVANCED MATHEMATICS COURSE SUCH AS LINEAR ALGEBRA OR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, AND SOME EXPOSURE TO THEORETICAL MATHEMATICS AS REQUIRED FOR THEIR MAJOR. AT THIS TRANSITION POINT, BETWEEN LOWER DIVISION AND UPPER DIVISION STUDIES, FACULTY WILL PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING THAT SUPPORTS AND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDIES AND CAREERS IN MATHEMATICS. ENHANCING PROGRAM REVIEW IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION (E-PRIME) WILL UTILIZE THE MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA?S NEWLY LAUNCHED PROGRAM REVIEW GUIDELINES (MAA PRG) TO DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT, EVALUATE, AND PROMOTE AN ENHANCED PROGRAM REVIEW (EPR) MODEL. THIS EPR MODEL WILL OFFER A MORE PRODUCTIVE, COLLABORATIVE, PURPOSEFUL ALTERNATIVE TO OFTEN PERFUNCTORY APPROACHES TO THE PROGRAM REVIEW REQUIREMENT FOR UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, SHIFTING THE FOCUS FROM COMPLIANCE TO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH. E-PRIME?S DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE EPR MODEL WILL IMPROVE ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM REVIEW PROCESS, ENSURE DEPARTMENTS HAVE ACCESS TO A DIVERSE POOL OF WELL-TRAINED EXTERNAL CONSULTANTS, INCREASE FACULTY OWNERSHIP OVER THE REVIEW PROCESS AND SUBSEQUENT OUTCOMES, INCREASE PRODUCTIVE COLLABORATION BETWEEN DEPARTMENTS AND ADMINISTRATORS, PROVIDE STRUCTURES AND SUPPORT FOR DEPARTMENTS TO ACT ON THEIR FINDINGS, DISSEMINATE OUTCOMES, AND ENSURE THAT EPR SERVES A DIVERSE RANGE OF INSTITUTIONS. OVER THE PAST DECADE, SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT INNOVATIONS HAVE EMERGED TO ADDRESS PARTICULAR CHALLENGES IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS, WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO HELPING STUDENTS DEVELOP THE BASIC MATHEMATICS PROFICIENCY THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN STEM. CONCURRENTLY, THERE HAS BEEN A RISE OF TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY AT RESEARCH-INTENSIVE INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO INFLUENCE INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSEWORK. WITH A GOAL TO HELP THE NATION MEET ITS STEM WORKFORCE NEEDS, THIS CONVENING WILL EXPLORE HOW THESE TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY CAN LEVERAGE EFFECTIVE INNOVATIONS TO CREATE A NATIONALLY SCALABLE STRUCTURE FOR IMPROVING STUDENT EXPERIENCES AND SUCCESS IN INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSES. REFORMS IN UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION THAT ADDRESS COLLEGE COMPLETION AND EQUITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION ARE ESSENTIAL TO MEETING THE NATION?S STEM WORKFORCE AND NATIONAL SECURITY NEEDS. THERE ARE MANY INNOVATIVE EFFORTS ADDRESSING THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENTRY-LEVEL MATHEMATICS COURSES, AND NUMEROUS PROJECTS AND INSTITUTIONS HAVE CREATED, PILOTED, AND OCCASIONALLY REPLICATED EFFECTIVE REFORM EFFORTS THAT OVERCAME PARTICULAR CHALLENGES, LIKE THE NEED TO REFORM PEDAGOGY OR ATTEND TO GENDER EQUITY. THIS CONVENING AIMS TO ADDRESS STRUCTURAL BARRIERS TO SYSTEMIC REFORM THAT PREVENT IMPLEMENTATION OF MANY OF THESE RESEARCH-BACKED INNOVATIONS AT SCALE. THE PROJECT ASPIRES TO LEVERAGE CURRENT PRACTICES, THAT DISTRIBUTE MUCH OF THE ENTRY-LEVEL MATHEMATICS COURSE TEACHING AND COORDINATION TO TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY, AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW PATHWAYS TO REFORM. AS SUCH, THE CONVENING WILL BRING TOGETHER MORE THAN 40 STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING TEACHING-FOCUSED FACULTY, TO PRODUCE A CONCEPT PAPER ARTICULATING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY TO DEVELOP NEW SOLUTIONS TO RECOGNIZED OBSTACLES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS IN INTRODUCTORY MATHEMATICS COURSES AND TO UNDERSTAND WAYS IN WHICH TO SCALE RESEARCH-BASED EFFORTS AND INNOVATIONS THAT HAVE SHOWN PROMISE IN INCREASING STUDENT SUCCESS IN THESE COURSES.
