THE LONG-STANDING AND LARGEST CONSORTIUM OF HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS) IN THE ATLANTA UNIVERSITY CENTER (AUC) WILL LEVERAGE ITS PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A SHARED RESOURCE SUPPORT MODEL DESIGNED TO REDUCE SYSTEMIC BARRIERS TO COMPETITIVENESS AND STRENGTHEN THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE WITHIN THE AUC AND ULTIMATELY, THE NATION. THE GOAL OF THE AUC-GRANTED PROJECT IS TO SYNERGISTICALLY EXPAND THE RESEARCH SUPPORT AND SERVICE CAPACITY WITHIN AND ACROSS FOUR AUC HBCUS (SPELMAN COLLEGE, MOREHOUSE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, AND CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY), CREATING A RESEARCH ENTERPRISE HUB THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SERVE AS A NATIONAL MODEL AND ROADMAP FOR EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER HBCUS AS THEY SEEK TO EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN THEIR RESEARCH ENTERPRISES BY LEVERAGING EXISTING CAPABILITIES, CULTIVATING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, AND IMPLEMENTING EFFECTIVE PRACTICES. TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN AND STRENGTHEN THE NATION'S RESEARCH ENTERPRISE, INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS MUST BE EMPLOYED TO ADVANCE THE GEOGRAPHY OF INNOVATION, INCREASE ACCESS FOR HBCUS, AND ENHANCE THE RESEARCH SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AT EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS. THE AUC-GRANTED PROJECT LEVERAGES THE STRENGTHS, ASSETS, AND EXPERTISE OF THE AUC RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM WHILE FOCUSING ON ITS HUMAN CAPITAL (I.E., PEOPLE), PROCESSES/POLICIES/PROCEDURES/ PRACTICES, AND PLATFORMS FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAPIDLY AND DELIBERATELY MOVING TOWARD MORE COMPETITIVE PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT, MORE EFFICIENT RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION, AND MORE EFFECTIVE POST-AWARD MANAGEMENT. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO: (1) AUGMENT THE KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND EXCHANGE OF RESEARCH LEADERSHIP IN THE AUC AND AT OTHER REGIONAL INSTITUTIONS; (2) ENHANCE RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CAPACITY TO SUPPORT IDEATION AND COMPETITIVE PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT; (3) STRENGTHEN THE RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION INFRASTRUCTURE AT AUC INSTITUTIONS; AND (4) CREATE AND IMPLEMENT AN AUC-WIDE OFFICE FOR RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION. THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE STRENGTHENING THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE WITHIN THE AUC; GENERATING A NATIONAL MODEL FOR COLLABORATION BETWEEN EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS TO ADVANCE THE NATION'S RESEARCH AGENDA; SHARING KNOWLEDGE, RESOURCES, AND EFFECTIVE PRACTICES; AND DIVERSIFYING THE NATION'S WORKFORCE OF STEM PROFESSIONALS AND LEADERS. EARLY EDUCATION AND LATER ACHIEVEMENT: THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN - PROJECT SUMMARY THE RESEARCH FOCUSES ON EXAMINING AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN ACROSS A BROAD RANGE OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUSES (SES), AVOIDING THE INHERENT CONFOUND IN EXAMINATION OF ONLY LOW-INCOME AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN. IN THE PROPOSED RESEARCH, COGNITIVE PROCESSES (FLUID REASONING, EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING, AND CRYSTALLIZED KNOWLEDGE) ARE EXAMINED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF CLASSROOM QUALITY (EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION, AND INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT), STUDENT-TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS (WARMTH AND CONFLICT), AND HOME ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION TO ELUCIDATE DETERMINANTS OF READING AND MATH ACHIEVEMENT AMONG AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE SAMPLE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN. A PRIMARY AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS ALSO TO EXAMINE THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN. THE RESEARCH IS A NATURAL EXPERIMENT INVOLVING LONGITUDINAL FOLLOW-UP OF AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE SAMPLE OF 198 AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN ORIGINALLY ASSESSED IN THEIR PRESCHOOL, KINDERGARTEN, AND EARLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS AND A NEW COHORT OF CHILDREN WHO EXPERIENCED A DISRUPTION IN THEIR PRESCHOOL YEAR DUE TO COVID-19. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES IN AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN BY ENHANCING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHILD X ENVIRONMENT PROCESSES THAT INFLUENCE READING AND MATH ACHIEVEMENT IN THIS UNDERSERVED POPULATION. RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH CAN BE USED IN DEVELOPING TREATMENTS, INTERVENTIONS, OR POLICIES CONCERNING EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION FOR THIS UNDERSTUDIED POPULATION, THEREBY CONTRIBUTING TO ENHANCING THE HEALTH AND OUTCOMES OF CHILDREN IN THIS NATION.

EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH - INVESTIGATION OF AMOEBOZOA GENOME COMPLEXITY AND THE EVOLUTION OF AMOEBOID BODY PLAN -THE AMOEBOZOA INCLUDES A DIVERSE GROUP OF SINGLE CELL MICROSCOPIC EUKARYOTES PRIMARILY CHARACTERIZED BY THEIR MOVEMENT AND FEEDING MECHANISM THROUGH FINGER-LIKE CYTOPLASMIC PROJECTIONS CALLED PSEUDOPODIA (FALSE-FEET). THIS GROUP ENCOMPASSES A WIDE ARRAY OF MICROORGANISMS EXHIBITING DIVERSE MORPHOLOGY AND GENOMIC COMPLEXITY, INHABITING VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS SUCH AS MARINE, FRESHWATER, AND SOIL. SEVERAL AMOEBOZOA ARE ALSO SIGNIFICANT HUMAN PARASITES, CONTRIBUTING TO HEALTH PROBLEMS. DESPITE THEIR IMPORTANCE, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THEIR GENOMIC AND CELLULAR DIVERSITY. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE GENOME COMPLEXITY AND THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR UNIQUE AMOEBOID (CELLULAR) BODY PLAN THAT UNDERPINS THEIR REMARKABLE DIVERSITY AND ECOLOGICAL SUCCESS. RESULTS FROM THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE EVOLUTION OF GENOME STRUCTURE AND CELLULAR FORM IN OTHER SIMILAR EUKARYOTES. THROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING INITIATIVES, PARTICULARLY TARGETING AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, THE PROJECT AIMS TO FOSTER INTEREST IN EVOLUTIONARY RESEARCH AND PROVIDE VALUABLE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES. COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS WILL FACILITATE STUDENT EXPOSURE TO HIGH-QUALITY RESEARCH, PAVING THE WAY FOR FUTURE CAREERS IN BIOINFORMATICS AND DATA SCIENCE. MOREOVER, EFFORTS TO ENHANCE DATA SCIENCE LITERACY THROUGH BOOT CAMPS AND CURRICULUM INTEGRATION WILL BENEFIT BOTH STUDENTS AND FACULTY, FOSTERING BROADER ENGAGEMENT WITH GENOMICS RESEARCH. OUTREACH EFFORTS INCLUDE ENHANCING SCIENCE EDUCATION AT K-12 LEVELS AND SPARKING CURIOSITY IN STEM THROUGH THE USE OF THE DATA AND SAMPLES COLLECTED DURING THE COURSE OF THIS PROJECT. THE SUPERGROUP AMOEBOZOA, CHARACTERIZED BY ITS DIVERSE MORPHOLOGY, BEHAVIOR, ECOLOGY, AND GENOMIC COMPLEXITY, HOLDS AN IMPORTANT EVOLUTIONARY POSITION AS THE CLOSEST RELATIVE OF ANIMALS AND FUNGI. THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO INVESTIGATE TWO MAJOR EVOLUTIONARY EVENTS WITHIN AMOEBOZOA USING COMPARATIVE GENOMICS AND CYTOLOGY: GENOME COMPLEXITY AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE AMOEBOID BODY PLAN. IT IS HYPOTHESIZED THAT GENETIC INNOVATIONS ? INCLUDING NOVEL GENES - HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXTREME MORPHOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL DIVERSITY OBSERVED WITHIN THIS GROUP. USING A PHYLOGENETIC FRAMEWORK AND GENOME SEQUENCES ? SOME OF WHICH WILL BE NEWLY SEQUENCED AS PART OF THIS RESEARCH - THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE HOW SEVERAL GENOMIC FEATURES, SUCH AS GENOME SIZE, NUCLEOTIDE COMPOSITION, GENE EXPRESSION, REPETITIVE ELEMENTS, AND THE EVOLUTION OF NEW GENES, HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO AMOEBOID STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION. ESTROGEN REGULATION OF AGE AND PTSD-ASSOCIATED CHANGES IN MACROPHAGE-INDUCED NEUROINFLAMMATION DURING HIV INFECTION. - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT 30-50% OF PERSONS LIVING WITH HIV STILL SUFFER FROM NEUROLOGICAL CO-MORBIDITIES, INCLUDING HIV-ASSOCIATED NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDERS (HAND) AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD), DESPITE THE SUCCESS OF COMBINED ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY (CART). PERSISTENT MACROPHAGE AND MICROGLIA DRIVEN NEUROINFLAMMATION IS SEEN AS A COMMON UNDERLYING FACTOR IN HAND AND PTSD DISEASE PROGRESSION. THE LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO UNDERSTAND THE UNDERLING MECHANISMS THAT INFLUENCE NEUROINFLAMMATORY PROCESSES IN NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS TO TARGET MORE SPECIFIC ENDOGENOUS SIGNALING MECHANISMS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES. IN THIS STUDY WE WILL EXPLORE ESTROGEN SIGNALING IN MACROPHAGES AND MICROGLIA AS A POSSIBLE THERAPEUTIC TARGET. 17SS- ESTRADIOL, THE MOST ACTIVE FORM OF ESTROGEN, IS REDUCED IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT 17SS- ESTRADIOL IS NEUROPROTECTIVE AND ITS REDUCED EXPRESSION MAY CORRELATE WITH WORSE HIV AND PTSD DISEASE PROGRESSION. HOWEVER, HOW CHANGES IN ESTROGEN CONCENTRATIONS AND ITS RECEPTORS MAY MODULATE HIV-INDUCED NEUROCOGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN THE POST-MENOPAUSAL WOMEN LIVING WITH PTSD IS UNKNOWN. THEREFORE, WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT MACROPHAGE AND MICROGLIA INDUCED NEUROINFLAMMATION WILL BE SUPPRESSED BY ESTROGEN, IN AN GPER DEPENDENT MANNER, IN THE AGING FEMALE COMPARED TO MALES AND PRE-MENOPAUSAL FEMALES LIVING WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AND HIV. TO ADDRESS THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL UTILIZE 2 IN VITRO HIV NEUROINFLAMMATORY MODELS: 1. A CO-CULTURE SYSTEM COMPOSED OF RAT CORTICAL NEURONS AND HUMAN MONOCYTES DERIVED MACROPHAGES ISOLATED FROM PTSD DONORS AND 2. A CO-CULTURE SYSTEM OF IMICROGLIA AND INEURONS DERIVED FROM HUMAN PLURIPOTENT STEM CELLS FROM HEALTHY DONORS. IMICROGLIA AND MACROPHAGES FROM PRE AND POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN AND AGED MATCHED MEN WILL BE PRETREATED WITH VARIOUS CONCENTRATIONS OF ESTROGEN PRIOR TO HIVADA EXPOSURE TO EXPLORE THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC AIMS: 1) EVALUATE ESTROGEN’S ABILITY TO SUPPRESS HIV- INDUCED NEUROINFLAMMATION IN PTSD-HMDM AND MICROGLIA. 2) EVALUATE THE ROLE OF ESTROGEN RECEPTORS IN HIV AND PTSD-INDUCED NEUROINFLAMMATION. IN THIS PROPOSED AWARD, WE EXPECT HMDMS FROM POST-MENOPAUSAL FEMALE PTSD DONORS AND IMICROGLIA WILL HAVE INCREASED HIV-INDUCED NEUROINFLAMMATION, WHICH CAN BE SUPPRESSED BY GPER ACTIVATION. THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR’S CAREER GOALS ARE TO LEAD AN INDEPENDENT TRANSLATION RESEARCH PROGRAM WHILE INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE SCIENCES AT A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY (HBCU). TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE PI HAS DEVELOPED A STRONG TRAINING PLAN THAT WILL EXPAND HER EXPERTISE IN THE NEUROAIDS AND PTSD FIELD, INCREASE HER SKILLSET IN THE GENERATION OF IPSC, FLOW CYTOMETRY, MASS CYTOMETRY, BIOSTATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND GENERATE DATA FOR FUTURE R AWARDS. IN QUEST OF SUCH A HOLY GRAIL OF DATA PROTECTION, THIS FRONTIER PROJECT ESTABLISHES MULTI-INSTITUTION AND MULTI-DISCIPLINARY CENTER FOR DISTRIBUTED CONFIDENTIAL COMPUTING (CDCC) TO CREATE A RESEARCH, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT THAT ENABLES SCALABLE, PRACTICAL, VERIFIABLE AND USABLE DATA-IN-USE PROTECTION BASED UPON TRUSTED EXECUTION ENVIRONMENTS (TEE) ON CLOUD AND EDGE SYSTEMS. CDCC FOCUSES ON FOUR BUILDING BLOCK THRUSTS FUNDAMENTAL TO DISTRIBUTED CONFIDENTIAL COMPUTING (DCC), REGARDLESS OF SPECIFIC TEE HARDWARE, INCLUDING ASSURANCE OF TEE CODE, ASSURANCE OF TEE NODES, ASSURANCE OF A TEE WORKFLOW AND ASSURANCE FOR THE STAKEHOLDER. THE FIRST THRUST LEADS TO AN OPEN ECOSYSTEM FOR TEE CODE CERTIFICATION, NOT RELYING ON ANY TRUSTED PARTY BUT ON A TRUSTWORTHY APPLICATION STORE WHOSE CERTIFICATION OPERATIONS ARE PUBLIC, ACCOUNTABLE AND VERIFIABLE. THE SECOND THRUST AIMS TO DEVELOP NOVEL DYNAMIC DATA-USE POLICY MODELS AND ENFORCEMENT MECHANISMS FOR SCALABLE TRUST MANAGEMENT AND DATA CONTROL ON THE TEE NODES RUNNING CERTIFIED CODE. THE THIRD THRUST FOCUSES ON ENSURING PROTECTION OF THE COMPUTATIONAL WORKFLOW BUILT ON TEE NODES AND THE LAST THRUST STUDIES THE STAKEHOLDER'S PREFERENCE AND EXPECTATIONS TO GUIDE THE DESIGN OF DCC TECHNOLOGIES AND ENSURE THEIR USABILITY. ON TOP OF THESE BUILDING BLOCKS, THE CENTER EXPLORES VARIOUS TRANSFORMATIVE APPLICATIONS (E.G., CONFIDENTIAL DISTRIBUTED AI SUPPORTS FOR HEALTHCARE) TO BE ENABLED. CDCC ALSO HAS A NUMBER OF EFFORTS FOR OUTREACH (DEVELOPMENT OF A MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE, INDUSTRY COLLABORATION, ETC.) AND FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION (SECURITY AND PRIVACY LAB FOR ATTRACTING MINORITY STUDENTS, JOINT SUMMER SCHOOLS AND OTHERS). THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

AN INTEGRATED CURRICULUM THAT SUPPORTS GENOMIC DATA EDUCATION - THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BUILD A GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN THE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT SPELMAN COLLEGE. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE MODULES IN SEVERAL COURSES. THESE INCLUDE A SOPHOMORE LEVEL INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY COURSE TAKEN BY ALL MAJORS, TWO INTERMEDIATE LEVEL COURSES AND AN UPPER-LEVEL RESEARCH-BASED COURSE. THESE CURRICULAR ENHANCEMENTS WILL EXPOSE STUDENTS TO CONCEPTS AND SKILLS IN GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE, WHILE LEVERAGING PUBLICLY AVAILABLE COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES AND DATABASES. THE ENHANCED CURRICULUM WILL EXPOSE STUDENTS TO THE USE OF GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE CONCEPTS, TOOLS AND RESOURCES IN THE CONTEXT OF SEVERAL BIOMEDICAL QUESTIONS RANGING FROM CANCER TO MICROBIOMES. IN ADDITION, THE RESEARCH-BASED COURSE WILL PROVIDE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES AND SERVE AS A SPACE FOR ENGAGING WITH THE HUB INSTITUTION AND THE WIDER GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE COMMUNITY. ULTIMATELY, THE GOAL OF THE CURRICULAR ENHANCEMENT IS TO CREATE A PATH FOR SPELMAN STUDENTS TO ENTER GRADUATE STUDIES AND CAREERS IN GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE. WHILE SPELMAN COLLEGE HAS A STRONG TRACK RECORD IN TRAINING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN STEM FIELDS, THE INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF GENOMIC DATA SCIENCE AND OUR NON-RESEARCH INTENSIVE SETTING PRESENT CHALLENGES THAT REQUIRE A DELIBERATE AND CONCERTED EFFORT. RUI: CMI: DEVELOPMENT OF THREE DIMENSIONAL ROVIBRATIONAL SPECTROSCOPY -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE CHEMICAL MEASUREMENT AND IMAGING PROGRAM IN THE DIVISION OF CHEMISTRY, PROFESSOR CHEN'S GROUP AT SPELMAN COLLEGE WILL BUILD AND TEST A NEW 3D INFRARED SPECTROMETER THAT CAN BE USED TO STUDY THE DETAILED STRUCTURE, BEHAVIOR, TEMPERATURE, AND ENERGY OF GASEOUS MOLECULES. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS NEEDED TO DEVELOP SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS SUCH AS CLIMATE CHANGE. FOR EXAMPLE, WORLDWIDE INDUSTRIAL GAS PHASE CHEMICAL REACTIONS CONSUME LARGE AMOUNTS OF ENERGY AND EMIT HIGH LEVELS OF CARBON DIOXIDE EACH YEAR. FOR STUDYING AND OPTIMIZING ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES, NEW MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES ARE NEEDED BECAUSE EXISTING GAS PHASE INFRARED TECHNIQUES ARE OVERWHELMED BY SPECTRAL CONGESTION AT MODERATE AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURES. THIS NEW 3D INFRARED SPECTROMETER SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THIS CONGESTION AND COMPLEXITY, LEADING TO STRATEGIES FOR CONSUMING LESS ENERGY AND REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. THIS WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT SPELMAN COLLEGE, AN HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE FOR WOMEN. IN THIS PROJECT, 3D ROVIBRATIONAL SPECTROSCOPY WILL BE DEVELOPED AND EXPLORED AS A NEW WAY TO OVERCOME CONGESTION OBSERVED IN 1D AND 2D INFRARED SPECTRA OF GAS PHASE MOLECULES. THE NEW 3D TECHNIQUE SHOULD PROVIDE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES, SUCH AS THE ABILITY TO RESOLVE AND AUTOMATICALLY ORGANIZE LARGE NUMBERS OF ROVIBRATIONAL PEAKS BY QUANTUM NUMBER, REGARDLESS OF TEMPERATURE. SUCH 3D ROVIBRATIONAL SPECTROSCOPY COULD BE ALSO USED TO INTERPRET COUNTLESS NEAR INFRARED SPECTRA THAT HAVE BEEN RECORDED BY ASTRONOMICAL TELESCOPES BUT THAT HAVE BEEN FRUSTRATINGLY DIFFICULT TO ANALYZE. IN ADDITION TO THE PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS MENTIONED ABOVE, THIS NEW TECHNIQUE SHOULD ALSO ADVANCE FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE BY PROVIDING NEW INFORMATION ON VIBRATIONAL MODE COUPLING AND LARGE AMPLITUDE MOTIONS. THE SPELMAN SKILLS & HABITS FOR ASPIRING PHYSICISTS & ENGINEERS (SHAPE) PROJECT CREATES A SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM PROVIDING EXPOSURE TO TOOLS, AND CONTENT THAT WILL HELP PHYSICS STUDENTS SUCCEED IN THEIR FIRST ACADEMIC YEAR. A COMBINATION OF ASYNCHRONOUS AND IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES IN THE SUMMER ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY ACADEMIC YEAR MEETINGS DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN THE SUMMER COHORT AND HIGHLIGHT CAREER CHOICES. WORKING WITH COLLEGE-LEVEL CAREER GUIDANCE AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT EFFORTS, THE PROJECT WILL GIVE STUDENTS CONFIDENCE TO INCLUDE BEING A PHYSICIST OR ENGINEER TO THEIR IDENTITY AND RESIST IMPOSTER SYNDROME. RESEARCHERS WILL INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THESE EFFORTS ON SHIFTS IN STUDENT IDENTITY, ATTITUDE, AND SELF-EFFICACY THROUGH SURVEY AND INTERVIEW DATA. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE SHAPE PROGRAM ARE TO: 1) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALES PURSUING AND OBTAINING A DEGREE IN PHYSICS AND/OR ENGINEERING AT SPELMAN COLLEGE BY ADDRESSING STEM/MATH READINESS AND INCLUSIVITY, 2) DEMONSTRATE CAREERS IN PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO PRACTICING PHYSICISTS, ENGINEERS, AND ALUMNA, AND 3) CULTIVATE COUNTERSPACES AND A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE (COP) TO CREATE POSITIVE CHANGES IN STUDENT ATTITUDES TOWARD SCIENCE AND IDENTITIES IN PHYSICS, AS EVIDENCED IN SURVEYS, LIKE THE COLORADO LEARNING ATTITUDES ABOUT SCIENCE SURVEY (C-LASS), AND SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE INVITED TO VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES DESIGNED BY PHYSICS FACULTY MEMBERS THAT WILL FOCUS ON SCIENTIFIC THINKING AND PHYSICS COURSE CONTENT. A MIXED-METHODS APPROACH WILL PROVIDE SURVEY, INTERVIEW, ASSIGNMENT, AND PARTICIPATION DATA TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT ASPECTS OF THE SHAPE PROJECT BENEFIT PARTICIPANT PARTICIPANTS ACADEMICALLY WHILE AFFIRMING THEIR ROLE AS A SCIENTIST. THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO LEAD TO WAYS THAT OTHER INSTITUTIONS CAN FOSTER COUNTERSPACES FOR HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED STUDENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE LAB ACTIVITIES ARE INTENDED TO CENTER EQUITY AND FOSTER A SENSE OF BELONGING, WHICH WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY ENGAGING STUDENTS IN CAREER EXPLORATION, INVOLVING ROLE MODELS FROM INDUSTRY, AND INTENTIONALLY PRIORITIZING RELEVANCE THROUGH CONNECTIONS TO STUDENTS? LIVES AND FUTURE GOALS. THE PROJECT TEAM PLANS TO MEASURE THE IMPACT OF THE MODULES ON STUDENTS? SENSE OF BELONGING IN CHEMISTRY AND AIMS TO WIDELY SHARE PROJECT MATERIALS AND STUDY RESULTS. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: 1) REVISE THE SECOND-SEMESTER ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LABORATORY CURRICULUM BY INTRODUCING FOUR RESEARCH-BASED EXPLORATORY MODULES COVERING TOPICS OF DRUG DISCOVERY, POLYMER-COSMETIC SCIENCE, POLYMER-MATERIAL SCIENCE, AND A KINETIC/MECHANISTIC OXIDATION STUDY THAT ARE EACH ACCOMPANIED BY COMPUTATIONAL AND SPECTROSCOPY COMPONENTS, 2) EVALUATE PROPOSED MODULES BY ASSESSING STUDENTS? ENGAGEMENT, SENSE OF BELONGING FOR WOMEN OF COLOR IN STEM, AND PERCEPTIONS OF LEARNING IN THE LABORATORY, AND 3) ASSESS SUCCESS OF COURSE REVISIONS BASED ON FACULTY OBSERVATIONS DURING MODULE IMPLEMENTATION. EACH MODULE WILL CONSIST OF AN INNOVATIVE CURRICULAR APPROACH TO ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LABS BY INCLUDING AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY FOLLOWED BY A COMPUTATIONAL ACTIVITY TO AID IN ANALYZING EXPERIMENTAL DATA AND INTEGRATING REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES. THE MODULES WILL ALSO BE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO ENGAGE IN CAREER EXPLORATION, CONNECT WITH ROLE MODELS FROM INDUSTRY, AND MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN CHEMISTRY AND THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. THE IMPACT OF THE CURRICULUM WILL BE ASSESSED IN MULTIPLE WAYS INCLUDING PUBLISHED TOOLS THAT HAVE EVIDENCE OF VALIDITY FOR MEASURING CONSTRUCTS SUCH AS BELONGING AND SELF-EFFICACY. THE RESULTS OF THE PROJECT WILL BE DISSEMINATED BROADLY VIA WORKSHOPS, PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS, AND CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AT THE REGIONAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS. BY PROVIDING AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB AT AN ALL WOMEN HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE, THIS PROJECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE A MODEL FOR HOW TO INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND FOSTER A SENSE OF BELONGING IN CHEMISTRY, AND MAY IN TURN, BE BENEFICIAL FOR OTHER STUDENT POPULATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN MARGINALIZED IN STEM. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE CREATION, EXPLORATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROMISING PRACTICES AND TOOLS. TARGETED INFUSION PROJECT: KEEPING THE STEM GATE OPEN (KSTEM-GO) - THE EFFECTS OF STANDARDS-BASED GRADING ON THE ACHIEVEMENT, RETENTION, AND AGENCY OF BLACK FEMALE STUDENTS -THE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM (HBCU-UP), THROUGH TARGETED INFUSION PROJECTS SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND STUDY OF EVIDENCE-BASED INNOVATIVE MODELS AND APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING THE PREPARATION AND SUCCESS OF HBCU UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS SO THAT THEY MAY PURSUE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING OR MATHEMATICS (STEM) GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND/OR CAREERS. SPELMAN COLLEGE SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW ASSESSMENT PRACTICES IN POST-SECONDARY MATHEMATICS COURSES CAN IMPACT BLACK FEMALE STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT ON ASSESSMENTS, RETENTION IN SUBSEQUENT COURSES, AND MATHEMATICAL IDENTITY AND AGENCY. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE STANDARD-BASED GRADING APPROACH TO ASSESSMENT, AND IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE DATA HELPFUL IN UNDERSTANDING BLACK FEMALE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, EXPERIENCE, AND RETENTION IN PRECALCULUS COURSES, AS WELL AS RETENTION IN STEM MAJORS, AND ULTIMATELY INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY AND AGENCY WITHIN MATHEMATICS. RESULTS FROM THIS PROJECT WILL ADD IMPORTANT INSIGHTS TO THE WIDER BODY OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT STANDARD BASED GRADING IN HIGHER EDUCATION. UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL MATHEMATICS COURSES TRADITIONALLY EMPLOY A POINTS-BASED GRADING (PBG) SYSTEM IN WHICH FINAL GRADES ARE A PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL POINTS EARNED. STANDARDS-BASED GRADING (SBG) IS AN APPROACH TO ASSESSMENT IN WHICH STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED CLEAR LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND GRADES ARE DIRECTLY BASED ON STUDENTS' ABILITY TO DEMONSTRATE FULL PROFICIENCY OF THESE OBJECTIVES. BY COMPARING DATA FROM TWO SECTIONS OF A SBG PRECALCULUS COURSE AND TWO SECTIONS OF A PBG PRECALCULUS COURSE, THE PROPOSED PROJECT SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND BLACK FEMALE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, EXPERIENCE, AND RETENTION IN THE SBG PRECALCULUS SEQUENCE COURSES, RETENTION IN STEM MAJORS, AND ULTIMATELY IDENTITY AND AGENCY WITHIN MATHEMATICS. THE SPECIFIC AIMS ARE TO: 1) REDESIGN SPELMAN COLLEGE?S CURRENT POINT-BASED GRADING PRECALCULUS I COURSE INTO A STANDARDS-BASED GRADING COURSE, 2) IMPLEMENT THE REDESIGNED STANDARDS-BASED GRADING PRECALCULUS COURSE, AND 3) DOCUMENT STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR EXPERIENCES IN THE STANDARDS-BASED GRADING PRECALCULUS COURSE, PERFORM STUDENT FOLLOW-UP FOCUS GROUPS AND INTERVIEWS, AND COLLECT RETENTION DATA FOR STEM MAJORS. THROUGH ENGAGEMENT WITH THE INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTATIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS (ICERM) SEMESTER ON NUMERICAL PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, THE PROJECT WILL FOSTER RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS IN NUMERICAL PDES, EXPOSE SPELMAN FACULTY TO ICERM PROGRAMS, AND WILL OFFER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN NUMERICAL PDES. THE PROJECT?S RESEARCH FOCUS IS TO DEVELOP BETTER COMPUTATIONAL TECHNIQUES TO SOLVE THE EQUATIONS THAT MODEL SPINODAL DECOMPOSITION, WHICH IS THE SEPARATION OF BINARY MIXTURES INTO TWO PHASES. THE GOAL IS TO CREATE HIGHER ORDER NUMERICAL APPROACHES USING MIXED-MODEL METHODS AND TO INVESTIGATE THE STABILITY PROPERTIES OF THESE METHODS. ADDITIONALLY, THE PI WILL EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL OF INCORPORATING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES TO EVOLVE THE MODEL IN TIME. OVERALL, THIS PROJECT COMBINES CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH WITH EDUCATIONAL AND DIVERSITY FOCUSED INITIATIVES THAT WILL IMPROVE RESEARCH CAPACITY IN APPLIED MATH AT SPELMAN COLLEGE AND WILL ENCOURAGE BLACK WOMEN TO PURSUE GRADUATE DEGREES IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT SEEKS TO DEVELOP A HIGHER ORDER NUMERICAL APPROACH FOR SOLVING THE CAHN-HILLIARD EQUATION, A MODEL FOR SPINODAL DECOMPOSITION IN BINARY MIXTURES. THE GOAL IS TO INVESTIGATE THE OPTIMAL SPLITTING BETWEEN THE IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT COMPONENTS IN AN IMPLICIT-EXPLICIT (IMEX) RUNGE-KUTTA METHOD THAT YIELDS AN ACCURATE AND STABLE SOLUTION. THE PI FIRSTS EXTENDS A SEMI-IMPLICIT APPROACH BY SHEN TO AN IMEX IMPLICIT MIDPOINT RULE. THEN THE PI WILL DETERMINE IF THE SAME SPLITTING IS BENEFICIAL IN A THIRD ORDER DIAGONALLY IMEX RUNGE-KUTTA SCHEME. THE RESEARCH ALSO EXPLORES USING A MIXED-MODEL APPROACH FOR THE VARIABLE MOBILITY CASE THAT INCORPORATES THE CONSTANT MOBILITY MODEL. THE GOAL IS TO CHOOSE THE OPTIMAL SPLITTINGS TO PRODUCE VARIABLE MOBILITY BEHAVIOR. FURTHERMORE, THE PROJECT IS INCORPORATING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES INTO THE MIXED MODEL TIME EVOLUTION. THE STABILITY AND ACCURACY OF ALL THE PROPOSED METHODS WILL BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED. UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF SPINODAL DECOMPOSITION IN BINARY MIXTURES HAS SIGNIFICANT APPLICATIONS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY, AND ENGINEERING. DEVELOPING HIGHER ORDER NUMERICAL METHODS AND INVESTIGATING THEIR STABILITY CONTRIBUTES TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF NUMERICAL TECHNIQUES FOR SIMULATING COMPLEX PHYSICAL PHENOMENA. MOREOVER, THE INTEGRATION OF MACHINE LEARNING INTO THE NUMERICAL FRAMEWORK OPENS AVENUES FOR ENHANCING THE ACCURACY AND EFFICIENCY OF THE SIMULATIONS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE AWARD HELPS TO FURTHER THE FACULTY MEMBER'S RESEARCH CAPABILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS, IMPROVE RESEARCH AND TEACHING AT THE HOME INSTITUTION, AND INVOLVES UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. BLACK WOMEN ARE A SIGNIFICANTLY UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUP IN STEM, AND ONE IMPORTANT WAY TO REMEDY THIS IS TO PROVIDE TRAINING AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO BLACK WOMEN EARLY IN THEIR ACADEMIC CAREERS. THE RESEARCH PROJECTS PROPOSED HERE ARE CARRIED OUT BY UNDERGRADUATES AT SPELMAN COLLEGE: BLACK WOMEN WHO ARE WORKING TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES IN STEM. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING THEM WITH VALUABLE SCIENTIFIC TRAINING IN THE FIELDS OF COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE, INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, AND POLYMER CHEMISTRY, THIS RESEARCH PROVIDES THEM WITH NETWORKING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL. THIS RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON USING COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY TO MODEL AND BETTER UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIOR OF CERTAIN METAL-CONTAINING POLYMERS. THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH ITSELF CAN ALSO HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY BENEFICIAL IMPACTS ON HUMAN SOCIETY BY LEADING TO THE DESIGN OF IMPROVED CATALYSTS AND NEW MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS. ONE OF THE OVERARCHING GOALS OF POLYMER SCIENCE IS TO DEVELOP MATERIALS THAT HAVE THE FUNCTIONS AND CAPABILITIES OF PROTEINS BUT ARE NOT LIMITED BY THEIR FRAGILITY OR COMPLEX SYNTHESIS. A CLASS OF MATERIALS THAT CAN POTENTIALLY FULFILL THESE CRITERIA ARE SINGLE-CHAIN NANOPARTICLE (SCNP) METALLOPOLYMERS. IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT METAL CONTAINING SCNPS CAN ACT AS EFFECTIVE CATALYSTS FOR NUMEROUS REACTIONS, SUGGESTING THAT THEY COULD BE POTENTIAL ?ARTIFICIAL ENZYMES?. USING MODERN COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY TECHNIQUES (CHIEFLY DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY AND QM/MM SIMULATIONS) THE MECHANISMS OF SEVERAL CATALYTICALLY ACTIVE SCNP METALLOPOLYMERS ARE BEING COMPUTED TO HELP ELUCIDATE THE ATOMISTIC DETAILS OF THEIR REACTION PATHWAYS AND HOW THESE ARE INFLUENCED BY THEIR POLYMERIC FEATURES. SPIN-STATE IS ALSO KNOWN TO BE AN IMPORTANT FEATURE IN METALLOENZYME REACTIVITY AND COULD ALSO AFFECT THE MECHANISTIC AND CATALYTIC BEHAVIOR OF SCNP ENZYME MIMICS AS WELL. THEREFORE, SYSTEMATIC MODELING OF SCNP MODEL SYSTEMS IS BEING PERFORMED TO DETERMINE THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES THAT GOVERN SPIN-STATE ENERGETICS IN SCNP METALLOPOLYMERS. THE GOAL OF THIS WORK IS TO DEVELOP MOLECULAR DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR RATIONALLY INCORPORATING SPIN-CROSSOVER (SCO) BEHAVIOR INTO SCNPS. BY ESTABLISHING A ROADMAP FOR COMBINING THE INHERENTLY QUANTUM MECHANICAL STATE-SWITCHING PROPERTIES OF SCO WITH THE DYNAMIC AND MODULAR BEHAVIOR OF SCNP SYSTEMS, NOVEL, SOFT, MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS WITH PROTEIN-LIKE CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE DEVELOPED IN THE FUTURE. SPECIFICALLY, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO SYSTEMATICALLY ANSWER HOW K-12 COMPUTING EXPERIENCES INFLUENCE STUDENTS AS THEY PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION AND WHETHER AND HOW THAT INFLUENCE DIFFERS FOR DISTINCT SUBPOPULATIONS OF STUDENTS. THE GOAL OF THIS MIXED-METHODS PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE EQUITY IN COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) EDUCATION BY INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS? THESE LEVELS HAVE REFERENCE NOT TO THE UNIT OF ANALYSIS (ALL THREE LEVELS UTILIZE STUDENT-LEVEL DATA) BUT RATHER TO THE WAY THE DATA ARE ORGANIZED. CLUSTER ANALYSIS OF STATEWIDE EDUCATION DATA WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE TAKING PATTERNS IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL. MULTILEVEL MODELING WILL THEN BE EMPLOYED TO INVESTIGATE HOW THESE COURSE TAKING PATTERNS ARE RELATED TO PARTICIPATION IN COMPUTING COURSES AND PROGRAMS IN COLLEGE. FOCUS WILL BE PLACED ON UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE RELATIONSHIPS DIFFER FOR DISTINCT GROUPS OF STUDENTS. FINDINGS FROM THESE ANALYSES WILL BE COUPLED WITH ANALYSES OF COLLEGE STUDENT SURVEYS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW STUDENTS? EXPERIENCES IN K-12 INFLUENCED THEIR OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND DECISIONS REGARDING COMPUTING EDUCATION IN COLLEGE. FINALLY, BLACK WOMEN WHO ARE MAJORING IN CS WILL BE ENGAGED IN DATA INTERPRETATION, FOCUS GROUPS, AND INTERVIEWS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR UNIQUE EXPERIENCES WITHIN THE CS ECOSYSTEM. THESE ANALYSES WILL HELP CONCEPTUALIZE BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN COMPUTING ALONG THE K-16 PATHWAY IN A WAY THAT SUPPORTS STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY BLACK WOMEN, IN APPLYING COMPUTING SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY NSF'S EHR CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM. THE ECR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES FUNDAMENTAL STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH THAT GENERATES FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD. INVESTMENTS ARE MADE IN CRITICAL AREAS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL, BROAD, AND ENDURING: STEM LEARNING AND STEM LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE ACCUMULATION OF ROBUST EVIDENCE TO INFORM EFFORTS TO UNDERSTAND, BUILD THEORY TO EXPLAIN, AND SUGGEST INTERVENTIONS AND INNOVATIONS TO ADDRESS PERSISTENCE. INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ON NEW IMMIGRATION AND CURRICULA DEVELOPMENT -SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSROOMS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN TEACHING STUDENTS ABOUT COUNTRIES OUTSIDE OF THEIR HOME COUNTRY, AND YET THERE IS VERY LITTLE COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ON WHAT AND HOW STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE HOME COUNTRIES OF NEW IMMIGRANTS. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW LESSONS ABOUT THE HOME COUNTRIES AND REGIONS OF NEW IMMIGRANTS ARE TAUGHT TO STUDENTS IN THE COUNTRY THAT RECEIVES THESE NEW IMMIGRANTS. THE PIS USE A CITY WITH A RICH HISTORY OF BOTH IMMIGRATION AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISM TO SITUATE THEIR CASE STUDY THAT EXAMINES THE SOCIOLOGICAL AND ANTHROPOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF INCORPORATING LESSONS ABOUT NEW IMMIGRANTS' HOME COUNTRIES INTO PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES OF THE CLASSROOM. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE IMPACT OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY METHODS WORKSHOP AT FOUR HISTORICAL BLACK COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS) THAT WILL BRING RESEARCHERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO COLLABORATE AND EXCHANGE METHODOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS. THIS RESEARCH USES INTERDISCIPLINARY METHODS TO ASSESS THE FOLLOWING: 1) HOW LESSONS ON THE HOME COUNTRIES AND REGIONS OF NEW IMMIGRANTS ARE DESIGNED AND ARTICULATED IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULA OF THE COUNTRY THAT RECEIVES THESE NEW IMMIGRANTS; 2) HOW TEACHERS ACTUALLY PRESENT THIS MATERIAL IN THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOMS; 3) HOW STUDENTS ARE RECEIVE LESSONS ON THESE COUNTRIES AND REGIONS; AND 4) THE IMPACT OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT THREE MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS. BOTH QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE METHODS, INCLUDING INTERVIEWS, SURVEYS, AND ETHNOGRAPHY, WILL BE USED TO ADDRESS THESE RESEARCH QUESTIONS. THIS PROJECT WILL ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELDS OF SOCIOLOGY, ANTHROPOLOGY, AND EDUCATION. IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE RESEARCH TRAINING AND SCIENTIFIC PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS AT AN ALL-WOMEN'S MSI AND FOSTER INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATIONS AMONG FACULTY AT THREE OTHER MSIS. THE RESEARCH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO BROADER NATIONAL CONVERSATIONS ON INCLUSION AND CURRICULA, AND WILL BE DISSEMINATED NATIONALLY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF CURRICULAR MATERIALS. CONFERENCE: IDENTIFYING STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING CAPACITY AMONG MSIS AND HBCUS FOR ADVANCING RESEARCH AND RESEARCH IMPACTS ON SOCIETY -TO PROMOTE THE PROGRESS OF SCIENCE, SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES MUST BE ADDRESSED. FOR EXAMPLE, THE DISPARATE RESEARCH-SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURES OF MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (MSIS) AND RESEARCH I (R1) INSTITUTIONS CREATE AN IMBALANCED PLAYING FIELD FOR WINNING GRANTS. THROUGH ADDITIONAL FUNDING AND INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDING, MSIS CAN BUILD RESEARCH CAPACITY, WHICH WILL INCREASE THE REPRESENTATION OF MSIS IN STEM FUNDING. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO BROADEN THE PARTICIPATION OF INVESTIGATORS FROM MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (MSIS) WHO ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN EXTRAMURAL FUNDING. TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS, A CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD AT SPELMAN COLLEGE TO PROMOTE SYNERGISTIC AND STRATEGIC COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN EXPERTS IN RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT (RD) AND BROADER IMPACTS (BI) WORK WITH LEADERSHIP AT HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSIS), HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS), AND TRIBAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (TCUS). CONFERENCE DISCUSSION AND ACTIVITIES WILL IDENTIFY NEEDS OF MSIS IN RD SUPPORT, BUILD COLLABORATIVE TEAMS, AND ESTABLISH PRIORITIES FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ON RD INFRASTRUCTURE AT MSIS. IN 2022, OUT OF 101 HBCUS, NO HBCU WAS RANKED WITH AN R1 CLASSIFICATION; FURTHER, ONLY 11 HBCUS WERE R2 CLASSIFIED. MSIS NEED STRONGER RESEARCH SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURE TO DEVELOP RESEARCH IDEAS AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH SPONSORS, WHICH CAN BE CRITICAL TO STAYING UP TO DATE ON FEDERAL FUNDING PRIORITIES. IMPROVING THIS INFRASTRUCTURE WOULD HELP ADVANCE STEM TALENT AT MSIS AND LEAD TO NUMEROUS IMPACTFUL SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES. THE CONFERENCE WILL (A) ORGANIZE AND FACILITATE A WORKSHOP TO EXAMINE CURRENT RD INFRASTRUCTURE AT MSIS AND DEVELOP TANGIBLE PLANS TO SYNERGIZE GROWTH, (B) ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS BOTH AMONG MSIS AND BETWEEN MSIS AND RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS (CENTER FOR ADVANCING RESEARCH IMPACT IN SOCIETY, NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS), AND LEADERS AT RESEARCH INTENSIVE UNIVERSITIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF STRENGTHENING RD INFRASTRUCTURE, AND (C) CREATE A NETWORK OF INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL ACTIVELY WORK TO ADDRESS THE GREATEST NEED(S) IDENTIFIED IN THE REPORT. SPELMAN COLLEGE, THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS AND THE CENTER FOR ADVANCING RESEARCH IMPACT IN SOCIETY WILL HOST THIS CONFERENCE. TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SPELMAN COLLEGE STUDENTS ENTERING DOCTORAL PROGRAMS, BY MAKING THEM MORE COMPETITIVE FOR ADMISSION INTO BIOMEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL PHD PROGRAMS. SUBSIDIARY AIM 1. TO INCREASE STUDENT AWARENESS OF BIOMEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH AND TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PURSUE A CAREER IN RESEARCH. SUBSIDIARY AIM 2. TO DEVELOP EMPIRICAL RESEARCH KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS OF STUDENTS SO THAT THEY WILL BE PREPARED FOR THE RIGOR OF THE ADVANCED RESEARCH TRAINING OF DOCTORAL PROGRAMS. STUDENTS WILL ATTEND MODULES TO DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL THINKING AND DATA SCIENCE SKILLS AND LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO WORK WELL IN A SCIENTIFIC LAB IN THEIR FIRST SEMESTER. THEY WILL ALSO WORK IN ACTIVE RESEARCH LABS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND PARTICIPATE IN EXTERNAL RESEARCH-INTENSIVE SUMMER PROGRAMS. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF U-RISE SCHOLARS WILL DEMONSTRATE IN-DEPTH COMPREHENSION OF THEIR RESEARCH DESIGN, PRESENT THEIR RESEARCH EVERY YEAR, AND ATTEND AT LEAST ONE PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCE. WE TAKE A HOLISTIC APPROACH BY DEVELOPING THE SOFT SKILLS THAT WILL PROMOTE SUCCESS IN CURRENT AND FUTURE LAB PLACEMENTS. STUDENTS WILL ALSO DEVELOP INDIVIDUALIZED DEVELOPMENT PLANS THAT WILL BE UPDATED ANNUALLY AND WE WILL WORK WITH STUDENTS TO SELECT AND APPLY TO DOCTORAL PROGRAMS. WE EXPECT THAT 100% OF STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THEIR BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN FOUR YEARS. WE EXPECT THAT AT LEAST 60% OF PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS WILL TRANSITION INTO A DOCTORAL PROGRAM WITHIN 2 YEARS OF GRADUATION, WITH 95% OF THOSE STUDENTS COMPLETING THE PHD.

DNA SEQUENCING ALLOWS US TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN DNA ? THE SO-CALLED ?MOLECULE OF LIFE?. DNA SEQUENCING HAS IMPACTED EVERY AREA OF BIOLOGY, ENABLING RESEARCHERS TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT HOW LIFE WORKS. THIS TECHNOLOGY IS USED FOR RESEARCH THAT BOOSTS AGRICULTURE, MONITORS BIODIVERSITY, CREATES ENERGY SOLUTIONS, AND IMPROVES HUMAN HEALTH. PREVIOUSLY, DNA SEQUENCING WAS EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING, BUT TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS HAVE LOWERED THE COST AND THE TIME INVOLVED. PREPARING THE NEXT GENERATION OF RESEARCHERS TO USE THIS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY IS ESSENTIAL, BUT FEW UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY EDUCATORS ARE EQUIPPED TO DO THIS. REASONS FOR THIS INCLUDE COMPLEX PROTOCOLS, LACK OF LESSON MATERIALS, INSUFFICIENT COMPUTER SKILLS, AND EDUCATOR PERCEPTIONS OF EARLIER, LESS ACCURATE VERSIONS OF THIS TECHNOLOGY. IN THIS PROJECT, THE COLD SPRING HARBOR LABORATORY DNA LEARNING CENTER WILL WORK WITH THREE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS TO REDUCE THESE BARRIERS TO USING ADVANCED DNA SEQUENCING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM. TOGETHER WITH NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, SPELMAN COLLEGE, AND UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO, R?O PIEDRAS, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL CO-DEVELOP PROTOCOLS AND TEACHING TOOLS THAT INTEGRATE ADVANCED DNA SEQUENCING INTO HANDS-ON TRAINING FOR BIOLOGY UNDERGRADUATES. FACULTY FROM THESE INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER PARTNERS INCLUDE 2- AND 4-YEAR, HISPANIC-SERVING, AND HISTORICALLY BLACK INSTITUTIONS, MAXIMIZING THE POTENTIAL THAT THE SOLUTIONS DEVELOPED CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED IN A VARIETY OF COLLEGE SETTINGS. INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT WILL LAY A FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE DISSEMINATION AT A NATIONAL LEVEL AND WILL SUPPORT EFFORTS TO CREATE A HIGHLY SKILLED AND DIVERSE US STEM WORKFORCE. THE FIRST PROJECT OBJECTIVE INTENDS TO DEVELOP A BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOINFORMATICS WORKFLOW TO DESIGN A KIT OF REAGENTS AND CLASSROOM-FRIENDLY PROTOCOLS THAT MINIMIZE COST, ARE EASY-TO-USE, AND ARE CUSTOMIZED TO SUPPORT COURSE-BASED STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS. EXISTING NSF-FUNDED COMPUTING SOLUTIONS (E.G., CYVERSE, JETSTREAM, XSEDE) WILL SUPPORT PROTOTYPE BIOINFORMATICS WORKFLOWS, AND SAMPLE DATASETS. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL DEVELOP DEMONSTRATION DNA SEQUENCING PROJECTS (E.G., GENOME ASSEMBLY, BIODIVERSITY STUDIES, AND METAGENOMICS) THAT EXPLORE COMPELLING RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND THAT CAN BE INTEGRATED INTO UNDERGRADUATE COURSEWORK. EACH PROJECT WILL ORGANIZE FACULTY FROM PARTNER INSTITUTIONS INTO MENTORING NETWORKS TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A ?COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE.? THIS APPROACH WILL SUPPORT THE APPLICATION OF EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULUM GUIDELINES AS FACULTY ITERATIVELY DEVELOP LESSONS, DEVISE SOLUTIONS TO IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES, AND PILOT MATERIALS WITH STUDENTS. EXPERT RESEARCHERS AND EDUCATORS WILL PROVIDE ADVICE ON ACHIEVING BOTH THE SCIENTIFIC AND PEDAGOGICAL GOALS OF THE PROJECT. PROJECT EVALUATION WILL ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE BARRIERS TO FACULTY ADOPTION OF DNA SEQUENCING TECHNOLOGY IN COURSE-BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES USING PUBLISHED ASSESSMENT TOOLS. THE DATA COLLECTED WILL BE APPLIED TO FILL GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BARRIERS TO STUDENT RESEARCH AT MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS. LESSONS LEARNED WILL BE SHARED AT THE INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL, THROUGH VIRTUAL NETWORKS FOR GENOMICS AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY EDUCATION, AND AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES. THE NSF IUSE: EHR PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE LEVEL 1 INSTITUTIONAL AND COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS EFFORTS TO TRANSFORM AND IMPROVE STEM EDUCATION ACROSS INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND DISCIPLINARY COMMUNITIES. THIS PROJECT IS ALSO SUPPORTED BY THE NSF IUSE:HSI PROGRAM, WHICH HAS THE GOALS OF ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION, AND INCREASING THE RECRUITMENT, RETENTION, AND GRADUATION RATES OF STUDENTS PURSUING ASSOCIATE?S OR BACCALAUREATE DEGREES IN STEM. RACIAL EQUITY: COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: UNDERSTANDING PERSISTENCE THROUGH THE LENS OF INTERRUPTION: A FRAMEWORK FOR TRANSFORMATION (UPLIFT) -THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WILL STUDY THE IMPACT OF INTERRUPTIONS ON BLACK WOMEN?S COLLEGIATE STEM EXPERIENCES AND THEIR PERSISTENCE AND MATRICULATION IN STEM MAJORS. INTERRUPTIONS ARE DEFINED AS OVERT AND SUBTLE EXTERNAL ACTS AND INTERNAL DIALOGUES AND DECISIONS THAT RESULT IN A LOSS OF FOCUS, MOMENTUM, AND CONFIDENCE AND REQUIRE TIME TO REBOUND. EACH INTERRUPTION REQUIRES RESOURCES TO REBOUND (E.G., TIME), BUT CONTINUAL INTERRUPTIONS IMPACT BLACK WOMEN?S ABILITY TO REBOUND AND PERSIST IN STEM OVER TIME. CONDUCTING RESEARCH THAT CENTERS THE VOICES OF BLACK WOMEN WHO EXPERIENCE THESE INTERRUPTIONS WILL GENERATE NEW INSIGHTS INTO REDESIGNING INSTITUTIONAL AND OTHER STRUCTURAL FACTORS THAT OFTEN SERVE AS BARRIERS TO PERSISTENCE AND SUCCESS IN STEM MAJORS. THE RESEARCH DESIGN ENTAILS A LONGITUDINAL, MIXED-METHODS DESIGN WHEREIN THEY FOLLOW 45 BLACK WOMEN WHO ARE STEM MAJORS ACROSS THREE COLLEGES IN GEORGIA. THROUGH INTERVIEWS, FOCUS GROUPS, AUDIO DIARIES, AND THE USE OF SURVEY METHODS TO COLLECT QUANTITATIVE DATA, THE RESEARCH TEAM INTENDS TO DEVELOP A FRAMEWORK OF INTERRUPTION FOR BLACK WOMEN IN STEM. THE GOALS OF THE FRAMEWORK INCLUDE: (A) TO DEFINE INTERRUPTION, (B) TO IDENTIFY CONSTRUCTS OF INTERRUPTION RELATED TO INTENT TO PERSIST, AND (C) TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DOMAINS OF POWER AND THE EXPERIENCES OF INTERRUPTION BY UNDERGRADUATE BLACK WOMEN IN STEM. THE CREATION OF A CLEAR DEFINITION OF INTERRUPTION AND A ROBUST CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL HELP ADDRESS SYSTEMIC RACISM ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND SETTINGS. THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IS FUNDED THROUGH THE RACIAL EQUITY IN STEM EDUCATION PROGRAM (EHR RACIAL EQUITY). THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND PRACTICE PROJECTS THAT INVESTIGATE HOW CONSIDERATIONS OF RACIAL EQUITY FACTOR INTO THE IMPROVEMENT OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE. AWARDED PROJECTS SEEK TO CENTER THE VOICES, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCES OF THE INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND INSTITUTIONS MOST IMPACTED BY SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES WITHIN THE STEM ENTERPRISE. THIS PROGRAM ALIGNS WITH NSF?S CORE VALUE OF SUPPORTING OUTSTANDING RESEARCHERS AND INNOVATIVE THINKERS FROM ACROSS THE NATION'S DIVERSITY OF DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPS, REGIONS, AND TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS. FUNDS FOR EHR RACIAL EQUITY ARE POOLED FROM PROGRAMS ACROSS EHR IN RECOGNITION OF THE ALIGNMENT OF ITS PROJECTS WITH THE COLLECTIVE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT THRUSTS OF THE FOUR DIVISIONS OF THE DIRECTORATE.
